Sooner than fans know it, though, its summertime exclusives will take over, beginning with another small-scale seasonal rollout at select Starbucks Reserve locations
the company is really putting the ube into the uber-exclusive menu only offered at select roasteries
Joining the floral-inspired menu it launched in March comes two new drinks
Select Starbucks Reserve locations will now offer an Ube Espresso Martini, a Masala Chai Latte, a Crispy Hashbrown Egg Cup
in addition to the new Rwanda Sholi Sundwa and Honey Process Ecuador Loja whole bean coffee blends and the fan-favorite Indonesia West Java Blend

UbeFest started as a small pop-up event in Long Beach in 2021
with the help of Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and several other sponsors
The free event will take place on April 26 at Don Knabe Park in Cerritos from 10 a.m

There’s no recipe here—all you need is a package of vegan-friendly frozen puff pastry dough (Pepperidge Farm will suit) and ube spread
Preheat the oven according to the puff pastry package instructions and allow the dough to thaw
Cut the dough into triangles and liberally spread a layer of ube jam on one side of the triangle
leaving about a quarter of an inch on all sides
Roll up the triangle of dough into a croissant shape and bake until puffy and golden
Devour as soon as they’re cool enough to not burn off your tastebuds

has started building a dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) plant in Louisiana
The plant will produce 100,000 tons of DMC per year and 40,000 tons of EMC derived from DMC per year
The plant is scheduled for completion in July 2026
and to begin operation in November of the same year
DMC and EMC are key components of the electrolyte solvent for lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles
DMC is also used in the semiconductor manufacturing process
The new plant will produce DMC using UBE’s gas-phase nitrite process
higher quality and fewer by-products and impurities compared to ethylene-based processes
“The investment in this plant is the largest in the manufacturing facility in UBE’s corporate history,” said Masato Izumihara

“As the sole DMC and EMC manufacturer in the United States

Either ube is getting really popular in the United States or it has an incredibly effective PR team
Ube—pronounced OO-beh—has been having a moment for quite a few moments now:
If you’re not from certain parts of Asia and you’ve never heard of ube
It just takes a while for these trends to bubble up into the mainstream (if they ever do)
After all—as we know well at the Special Ingredient labs—the exotic ingredients competing for our attention these days are more numerous than ever
because we like how Latin names sound like magic words)
People from the more tropical parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands have grown and eaten it since ancient times
but it’s most widespread in the Philippines
where it’s popular as a flavoring and dessert ingredient
and ube halaya—a pudding-like treat made from mashed ube and condensed milk or coconut milk
Ube is not a sweet potato—those come from the Americas (you can brew with those, too, obviously
and we should probably stop calling them “yams.”) Ubes are
sweet; other frequent descriptors include nutty and earthy
It’s easy to see how they end up in desserts
is arguably the best thing about ube: It’s purple—like
and it’s a pretty cool color—just ask Prince
while other Asian food cultures get plenty of attention
our friends in the Philippines were due to get some love
Harland Brewing in San Diego was still in its first year when its then–director of brewing operations
visited a local bakery and enjoyed a memorable (and presumably purple) ube donut
“And Nick instantly knew he could make it into a beer,” says Jacob Hillier
developed the recipe that would become Harland’s Ube Milkshake IPA
Its annual release has become a big enough deal locally that the brewery hosts an annual Ube Day party to celebrate
with many people of Asian and Pacific Island backgrounds
“These communities lined up at our doors and spread the word about ube being in a beer,” Hillier says
we have been [welcomed] into the surrounding community with love and support because of this beer.”
He describes the flavor that ube brings as “vanilla bean
and cake batter,” for a “decadent pastry-like characteristic with slight earthy undertones.” The Harland team also uses ube in other beer styles—even a hard seltzer
“to keep it true to the many ube pastries that are made,” Hillier says
“and to keep that tropical tradition alive.”
and they’re increasingly available now that American bakeries and ice cream shops are catching on to the flavor and its popularity
you could try processing your own ube—what is “craft,” anyway?—by peeling
and potentially even turning it into ube halaya before adding to secondary
Hillier says they’ve had the most success with ube flavor concentrate
“It can easily be used to control exactly how much ube flavor you want,” he says
“and even control the purple hue that it creates in beer.”
The beer’s vivid purple hue comes from that concentrate—only about two liters for a 30-barrel batch—and nothing else
“We’ve noticed that getting the perfect purple color is very dependent on beer style,” Hillier says
we are able to control getting a very vibrant but opaque color of purple.”
But it can be tricky—a little goes a long way
“We do tend to see when adding the ube [concentrate] that it will go from a weird gray color—from not having enough—to even having too much added and getting almost black,” Hillier says
carefully adding the ube is a huge part in successfully getting the purple color we are looking for.”
Another San Diego brewer who dabbles in ube is Derek Gallanosa
founder of GOAL in North Park and the former head brewer at Moksa in Rocklin
The vividly purple Ube Haze IPA has become his most popular beer
Gallanosa says he uses a processed form for flavor and color—in this case
“I think what builds the flavor is also using complementary hops,” he says
“I’ve just been using Citra lately—at five pounds per barrel—but plan on introducing other varieties in future batches.”
Hillier’s advice for anyone who wants to try brewing with ube
“The more you understand how this purple yam has been used
the easier it is to understand the big picture of what it should taste like,” he says
and it can’t be used on its own—don’t just start dosing dry-hopped hazy IPAs with ube

In case you missed the Food Crush series
or just so damn good that they live in my brain and pop up with regularity
I can’t quite get the dish off my mind
I don’t like ice cream that is too sweet or vanilla-y
which means higher than average milk-fat content
Mint Tapas and Sushi’s Ube Ice Cream had every wow factor when I was in for dinner a couple of months ago
And I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since
I visited the newest location in Sugar House
and I can’t wait to return when the garage doors open onto the patio for people-watching season.
The Ube Ice Cream at Mint’s is exceptionally creamy
to the point of being more of a gelato in mouthfeel than a hard-pack ice cream
It may also result from the natural starchiness of the ube
It also has a hint of earthiness (after all
yams are a tuber) that balances out the sweetness
The ice cream was served in a martini-style glass with fresh berries and beautiful
The pear is the perfect crisp floral foil to the rich ice cream.
We started with dessert here, but I would be remiss if I didn’t give you a few other favorites to precede the Ube Ice Cream—unless you want to go straight for dessert, which you know I won’t judge. Mint takes the shareable experience of sushi and layers on tapas-style dishes that are a mix of traditional and experiential, with Chef Soy’s unique voice showing through
So grab a group and do a lot of tasting.
My favorite starter is the jalapeno hamachi
The jalapenos are in a light vinaigrette in the bottom of the bowl
so you can control the level of heat in each bite
with the generous hamachi arranged as a rose
Another favorite is the spicy tuna tartare
which is the perfect nutty foil for the soft
Some other small plates you should devour are the pork belly
I’m a big fan of how unique the menu is
You will find rolls here that are not copy-and-paste from your standard sushi menu
One that stood out was the Galaxy lollipop
Ask your server to guide you when it comes to selecting your sushi
And I recommend that you hoard it for yourself.

who has been eating this vegetable all my life
watching this trend blow up has been bittersweet
Because unlike many eaters who are rather new to the flavor
I’ve noticed that much of the ube America is obsessing over is not the real thing
Ube is supposed to be nutty with a very slight hint of vanilla. And to properly use ube, it should be made from, you know, actual ube. It’s unsurprising that some restaurants and stores use ube extract sold by companies like McCormick
Although the extract is easily accessible (and tastes okay)
Every time I bite into a food that uses fake ube
It doesn’t taste like my beloved halo-halos (a cold dessert meaning “mix-mix”) that I used to eat every summer
It’s nothing like the ube stuffed inside the ensaymadas (spiral-shaped sweet yeast dough pastries
topped with sugar and grated cheese) I always ate for breakfast
And it’s worlds away from the ube biko (sticky rice cakes) that were my family’s dessert centerpiece during Christmas

The main offender is Trader Joe’s ube line, which features everything from ube spread and tea cookies to ube mochi pancake and waffle mix and ube joe-joe cookies
this was exciting — growing up in Central Jersey
I rarely saw Filipino food at an American grocery store
But after trying Trader Joe’s ube food items
that little thrill quickly turned to disappointment
They claim to use ube powder and puree but their products offer only a slight hint of ube taste — the rest is just sugar
ostensibly for the intense and novel color
I’ve also tried ube at various coffeeshops
bakeries and restaurants around New Jersey
and while I value their efforts in incorporating my culture into their menus

I’m not saying you can’t use extract at all
but at least use real ube along in tandem with the extract to make it more authentic
there are several exceptional local businesses in New Jersey that offer a variety of outstanding — and authentic — ube products

Unilateral biportal endoscopy is widely used in the surgical treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis
To investigate the feasibility of bilateral synchronous UBE to unilateral laminotomy and bilateral decompression(BS-UBE-ULBD) for treating two-level lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS)
Sixty-four patients with two-level lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) treated with BS-UBE-ULBD from October 2022 to January 2024 were retrospectively analyzed
All patients were treated with BS-UBE-ULBD
All 64 patients successfully underwent surgery
and the duration of surgery was 95–180 min
The average number of fluoroscopy was 3.02 ± 0.92
The average blood loss during the surgery was 73
Postoperative lumbar CT showed that the spinal canal and bilateral nerve roots were fully decompressed
Complete follow-up data were obtained for all 64 cases
The VAS score of low back and leg pain and the ODI of lumbar function significantly (P < 0.05) improved at each follow-up time point
MacNab evaluation at 6 months after the surgery showed that the results were excellent in 48 cases
From October 2022 to June 2024, our hospital pioneered the use of Bilateral Synchronous UBE-unilateral Laminotomy and Bilateral Decompression (BS-UBE-ULBD) for two-level degenerative LSS. Sixty-four patients with two-segment LSS were treated with BS-UBE-ULBD, and the results were satisfactory.

and other drugs were used after the operation
the patients began to get out of bed under the protection of hard waistline fixation
The drainage was removed within 24 h after the surgery
the patients mainly rested in bed and properly exercised the back muscles
Patients are encouraged to get up and move around early but are not encouraged to participate in physical exercise
the patients were forbidden to do heavy physical activity involving the waist
Postoperative guidance was provided to strengthen the training of back muscle strength

A paired t-test was used to compare the VAS and ODI scores of low back pain and leg pain before surgery and 1 week and 6 months after surgery
The mean values were expressed as standard deviations
and the Student-t test was used to analyze the differences between the two groups
A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant
Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate the intrarepeatability of different observers (interobserver reliability)
One independent researcher blinded to the group allocation completed the evaluations
Results 1: There were 34 males and 31 females
64 patients were followed until 1 week and 6 months after the surgery
There were 1 case of L2/3 and L3/4 involvement
and 45 cases of L4/5 and L5/S1 involvement
All patients had neurogenic intermittent claudication with or without radicular pain in the waist and lower extremities
Twenty-two patients were complicated with hypertension
One patient had pain and discomfort in the contralateral lower limb after lamina fenestration and was treated with neurotrophic
and analgesic conservative treatment after the surgery
The patient’s symptoms were significantly improved 2 months after the surgery
One patient had a dural tear of nearly 2 mm during the operation
and the patient was kept in bed for one week after the surgery
No antibiotics were prescribed postoperatively

F postoperative CT reconstruction showed that the right L3/4 and the left L4/5 laminae were missing
and we will explore and discuss the following shortcomings in future studies: ① the follow-up time of this study was short
and only two follow-up time points were set
thus long-term efficacy still necessitates further studies; ② there no control group in this study
BS-UBE-ULBD can effectively treat all clinical symptoms of patients with two-level degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis on the premise of ensuring clinical safety
The BS-UBE-ULBD technology has a good development prospect in the treatment of two-segment or even more segmental degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis

Huda Kattan of Huda Beauty has gone viral for her loose setting powder
she released Ube — a new lilac-toned color —which was said to help dark under-eye circles
We put it to the test on six different skin tones
The bright pink looked too red on my very fair skin
but I think it would be much more flattering if I had a tan
This shade was a lot more wearable than I thought it would be
based on how it looks online and in the package
I also love the fact that it visibly brightened up my under-eye area
(I’m wearing my usual Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder on the left side and Huda Beauty on the right.) It has a smooth finish and doesn’t look cakey or settle into fine lines
While I liked how it brightened up my under-eye area (I’m wearing just my Nars concealer and Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter on the left versus the Huda Beauty on the right side)
I didn’t like the overall finish and the feeling of powder on my skin
even if it doesn’t appear as purple on the skin as it looks in the packaging
I paired it with the Huda blush filter in Ube Cream
I found the violet tones way too overpowering for my complexion
But I fell in love after a second try paired with a Patrick Ta cream blush
If you don’t already have a cult-favorite setting powder
which has my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer on
but my under-eye hollows are a source of insecurity for me (shout out to my dad for these genetics!) and this powder
with whatever delicious witchcraft Huda and her team pumped into it
smoothed them out and somehow made them look more plump
I also loved how this made my blush and under eyes meld seamlessly
The instructions for baking tell you to let the product sit for a few minutes
then buff off the powder with a fluffy brush
and I just threw all that out the window (sorry
I don’t like a well-set/baked under eye on me!)
and blotted a bunch of it off on the back of my hand before applying this product under my eyes
If you prefer a more natural-looking/skin-like finish
I was initially afraid of the color but once you apply, even if you dab on a lot of product with a powder puff
or bright pink like it looks in the packaging
It’s very matte but comes in handy if you get oily and crease throughout the day
I like that it brightens my under eye but also blurs my pores that some products tend to emphasize
I also like that it gives me that airbrushed look
it’s more suitable for a full face of matte makeup
I prefer a more dewy look and tend to skip powder or use a very light hand and setting spray to keep my face from looking too matte
I’ll definitely be reaching for this to set my under eye
I use the Hude Beauty Kunafa shade daily because it’s complementing to my skin tone
I like the Ube shade but wish I would’ve applied my blush on with it for this look
it would’ve warmed the brightness up a bit
but this one is a bit more lilac on my skin tone than other pink powders
I later applied my favorite Haus Labs blush over the powder and I liked it a lot more
It’s something I’d wear more in the spring or summer
