This post is co-written with Monica Cujerean and Ionut Hedesiu from Flutter UKI
In this post, we share how Flutter UKI transitioned from a monolithic Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)-based Airflow setup to a scalable and optimized Amazon Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow (Amazon MWAA) architecture using features like Kubernetes Pod Operator
continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) integration
As a division of Flutter Entertainment
Flutter UKI stands at the forefront of the sports betting and gaming industry
Flutter UKI offers a diverse portfolio of entertainment options
operating through an array of renowned online brands
While Flutter UKI has established a strong online foothold
it maintains a significant physical presence with a network of 576 Paddy Power betting shops strategically located across the United Kingdom and Ireland
The Data team at Flutter UKI is integral to the company’s mission of using data to drive business success and innovation
their teams are dedicated to ensuring the seamless integration
and accessibility of data across multiple facets of the organization
By developing robust data pipelines and maintaining high data quality standards
Flutter UKI empowers stakeholders with reliable insights
Its commitment to data excellence underpins its efforts to remain at the forefront of the online gaming and entertainment industry
delivering value and strategic advantage to the business
Flutter UKI was looking to transform their data orchestration service from a resource-intensive, self-managed system to a more efficient, managed service that would allow them to focus on their core business objectives rather than infrastructure management. Through extensive proof-of-concept (POC) testing and close collaboration with AWS Enterprise Support
Flutter UKI gained confidence in the ability of Amazon MWAA to handle their sophisticated workloads at scale
Their choice of MWAA over a self-managed solution on Amazon EKS reflected Flutter UKI’s strategic focus on using managed services to reduce operational complexity and accelerate innovation
The migration to Amazon MWAA followed a methodical approach
There was extensive testing of multiple POCs
the engineering team found MWAA to have a good ease of use
which helped them reduce the learning curve resulting in faster
they iterated on the final architecture by making data-driven decisions
Starting with a small subset of directed acyclic graphs (DAG)
the Flutter UKI team expanded their deployment over time
gradually moving hundreds and eventually thousands of workflows to the managed service
phased transition allowed them to validate the performance and reliability of MWAA while minimizing operational risk
To achieve operational excellence, Flutter UKI has implemented a comprehensive monitoring framework centered on Amazon CloudWatch metrics
Their monitoring solution includes strategically configured alarms that provide early warning signals for potential issues
This proactive monitoring approach enables their teams to quickly identify and investigate anomalies in production workload executions
ensuring high availability and performance of their data pipelines
The combination of careful version management and robust monitoring exemplifies Flutter UKI’s commitment to operational excellence in their cloud infrastructure
DAGs are scheduled to distribute execution times as evenly as possible. Task code and common modules are hosted on Amazon S3 and retrieved at runtime. For larger codebases, Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) volumes are mounted to task pods are used
Flutter UKI’s infrastructure comprises four Amazon MWAA clusters
each executing tasks on dedicated Amazon EKS node groups
They manage approximately 5,500 DAGs encompassing over 30,000 tasks
handling more than 60,000 DAG runs daily with a concurrency exceeding 450 tasks running simultaneously across clusters
They anticipate a 10% monthly increase in this workload in the short to medium term
During major events like Cheltenham and Grand National
their MWAA service has demonstrated stability and scalability
achieving a 100% success rate for critical processes in 2025
a significant improvement over previous years
Flutter UKI’s journey with AWS Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow (Amazon MWAA) has resulted in a stable
The careful re-architecting of Flutter UKI’s service
combined with strategic decisions around task execution and infrastructure management
but also enhanced performance and reliability
Security and compliance benefits were also noticed
because MWAA provides managed security updates
and integration with AWS security services
the shift to MWAA has allowed Flutter UKI’s engineering teams to redirect their efforts from infrastructure maintenance to business-critical tasks
focusing on DAG development and improving data pipeline efficiency
ultimately accelerating innovation in their core business operations

Luke Littler’s historic victory at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship captured the nation’s imagination and set a high bar for sporting moments for 2025 - just days into the New Year
Having come to prominence for his incredible run to the final last year
the sport’s new sensation won a final that was watched by millions of people and drew worldwide attention
Flutter’s three main sportsbooks – Paddy Power
Sky Betting & Gaming and Betfair – all delivered campaigns that had sporting action at their core
Whether it be the number of 180s in the darts
goals scored during the English Football League (EFL) Playoffs
or winners ridden during the jumps season in horse-racing
each brand had a funding mechanism linked to the pure excitement of sport
all three campaigns have achieved incredible reach
positively energized the teams and ambassadors involved
been fully embraced by charitable partners
the campaign aims to encourage 270,000 people to learn life-saving CPR – equivalent to three Wembley Stadiums
the historic venue was where the launch took place
“Lining up at Wembley alongside a squad of life savers and icons
even more so because it was just a few months before that when the idea to work with the British Heart Foundation had been born,” says Kevin
“The stadium is so vast that it really brought home the scale of what we’re trying to achieve and the amount of people we needed to reach.”
which teaches essential CPR skills in as short as 15 minutes
While Kevin is incredibly proud of the campaign's reach and “sense of collective achievement” across Sky Bet
he also believes it shows how Flutter UKI is standing by its commitment to making a wider impact through its links with sport
The charitable partnerships are also proving to be hugely rewarding experiences for the brand teams and the ambassadors who work on them
Betfair Brand Manager Lauren Hayhoe is someone who feels this way, having worked on its ‘Serial Winners’ campaign. Partnering with Rachel Blackmore, a Betfair Ambassador, the campaign raised £250,000 for the Injured Jockey’s Fund in the UK and Ireland
most of which was based on the number of winners the history-making jockey rode during the 2024 Jumps season
which included kick-starting the Cheltenham Festival with a famous win atop of Slade Steel
“It’s been an incredible experience getting to hear firsthand how these funds are supporting those that need it,” explains Lauren
who had the opportunity to engage directly with the injured recipients
“It is clear to see that a donation of this size is truly impactful
and that makes the work we’ve done behind the scenes even more meaningful,” she adds
Betfair’s campaign was rooted in personal experiences
Blackmore had a serious injury herself late last year and personally knows others impacted
which further showed how important the charity is for the sport of horseracing
Given the partnership was “one that meant a lot to Rachael,” Lauren believes this allowed the brand to produce “authentic content that enabled us to raise awareness of the charities beyond the traditional racing audience.”
which successfully raised over £1m for Prostate Cancer UK through a funding mechanic connected to the number of 180s thrown by the darts players during the World Championship – with a bonus for nine-dart finishes
The money will help fund Prostate Cancer UK’s Transform project to develop a national cancer screening program for men, of which Paddy Power is now a founding partner. But even more significant, encouraging tens of thousands of men to use the charity’s online risk-checker, the BIGGER 180 campaign is almost sure to have helped uncover previously undiagnosed cancers. This was case with Barry Hearn
President of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC)
who said the awareness campaign had given him the "nudge" to see a doctor that led to a successful operation
Equity & Improvement at Prostate Cancer UK
the campaign has had “an enormous impact in making men aware of their risk of prostate cancer
and what they can do about it” which is crucial given the disease often has no symptoms in its earlier
As Olympic cyclist and campaign ambassador Sir Chris Hoy pointed out
Such a strong and public endorsement of Paddy Power’s ability to drive positive societal change is something that Jack Wilson
“Seeing the campaign inspire thousands of people to check their risk was especially gratifying,” says Jack
pointing out that it would not have been possible without the work of “many hugely talented colleagues across the brand and their close collaboration with Prostate Cancer UK.”
which aims to unlock children's power and potential through play
Flutter’s campaigns in the UK and Ireland have galvanized local communities to take proactive actions
Reflecting on the power of raising awareness of a lesser-spoken-about health issue
Paddy Power’s Jack reiterates how important it’s been to have thousands of men access the online risk checker for prostate cancer
it’s been a lifesaver,” he says with pride
yet by intertwining sporting events with charitable initiatives
Flutter is setting a new standard for sporting partnerships that extends far beyond the playing field to communities that need support and causes that deserve greater attention

Flutter UKI’s Cash4Clubs invests nearly £6.5m into grassroots and community sports
World darts ace Chris Dobey surprised Sunderland Deaf Society's Darts team by revealing that they are one of 200 clubs to win a share of £400,000 worth of vital funding from Flutter UKI
Acting on its commitment to Do More for Communities
Flutter UKI has invested nearly £6.5 million into grassroots and community sport with the aim of driving participation
improving facilities or helping clubs and charities purchase new equipment since the launch of its flagship ‘Cash4Clubs’ programme
The £2,000 grant will fund training gear and cover the costs associated with competing in tournaments, including the Deaf Darts Organisation's Grand Slam in Leicester later this year (July)
It is one of many clubs running activities from American Football to Zumba that are being awarded a grant by Flutter UKI – home to Paddy Power
Chris Dobey commented: “It was really humbling to see the passion this team has for darts and to understand how important it is to them
It’s much more than a sport; it’s a social outlet and a place to build friendships.”
Deaf Darts team member player Darren Davison explained why financial support for his team is so important: "I played with hearing teams before
Being part of this team means we can communicate with one another
Other winners this year include the Swindon Storm American Football Club in the South-West
who discovered they had won a grant when a message from NFL legend Rob Gronkowski flashed up on a big screen during a Super Bowl party they attended last month
Conservative MP and chair of the cross-party Culture Media and Sport Select Committee put the importance of schemes like Cash4Clubs into perspective
She said: “We launched an enquiry into the health of sport in local communities last year because of the worrying lack of facilities across England and Wales and declining participation rates
Taking part in sport and physical activity is vital for fitness and well-being and I applaud Flutter UKI for their commitment to the cause with the Cash4Clubs scheme
It's great to see the wide range of clubs that will benefit from the funding this year."
Kevin Harrington, Chief Executive of Flutter UKI, said Cash4Clubs initiative was a key part of the group’s global commitment to improve the lives of 10 million people in the communities where it operates by 2030 as part of their Positive Impact Plan
"Community clubs are the bedrock of sport in the UK and Ireland
and we are committed to doing everything we can to help these smaller organisations continue to make a big difference to people’s lives
Last year we doubled our funding from £200,000 to £400,000 after receiving so many applications
The number of clubs needing financial assistance continues to grow
which indicates the real value these grants have for local grassroots organisations
many of which are existing on a shoestring.”
Sported’s head of marketing Mark Woods said: "More than 700 clubs from across the UK and Ireland
submitted applications for the scheme and our priority was to support recipients delivering real impacts into their communities
So many of these groups are addressing barriers to participation to ensure that no-one is excluded from sport and physical activity due to financial
But we know every penny is precious in what they do
The funds provided through Cash4Clubs underline the huge impact which even a modest grant can have on these organisations
and it will make a difference to the people they serve."

Acting on its commitment to Do More for Communities
Flutter UKI is providing 200 community sporting organisations across the UK and Ireland with the opportunity to apply for grants of £2,000 to improve their facilities
run coaching programmes and drive participation in sports
Last year's winners included Basa in Rochdale
which runs fitness classes for over 60's women
the Gosport Bowmen archery club in Hampshire and the London Wheelchair rugby club - who sent four players to the ParalympicsGB squad in Paris
over 85 per cent said they had been able to deliver more activities - and a total of 9,000 new people aged 18 or over had engaged in health and fitness programmes as a result
Conservative MP and chair of the cross-party DCMS Select Committee
said: "I hope that grassroots clubs will make the most of the opportunity to apply for a Cash4Clubs grant.”
"These clubs do great work in our communities
getting them active and developing new skills and passions
nearly £6 million has been invested into community sports by Flutter through its brands
said: "The stunning success of Team GB at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics once again highlighted the power of sport
We hope Cash4Clubs can play an important part in helping at the grassroots level by enabling small clubs to play an even bigger role in their community
There are priceless benefits in people trying out a sport for the first time
getting active or having the confidence to take their hobby to the next level
We believe this programme can make a real difference in the areas that need it most.”
Flutter UKI is working with leading UK charity Sported to deliver the Cash4Clubs programme
Clubs and charities will be invited to apply for grants from today
Two hundred bids will be selected for funding by the awards panel
with a particular emphasis this year on clubs in impoverished areas trying to boost participation
Sport England has a 10-year to improve the lives and communities in England through physical activity and sport
While sports activity has recovered from the pandemic
a parliamentary report last year warned there has been little progress in tackling barriers to participation in sport and physical activity across England
The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee said nearly two in five adults in England still do not meet guidelines for recommended activity
said: “We continue to see people who are increasingly at risk of being unable to access the benefits of sport because of the growing financial challenges faced by grassroots groups
It’s a privilege to partner with Flutter on Cash4Clubs and we will ensure.”
used the Cash4Clubs grant to help set up Acorn FC
a football team made up exclusively of refugees and asylum seekers
They went on to make history by playing the first competitive match in the UK between asylum seeker teams
commented: "We formed our football team Acorn FC and with the money from the grant we could be taken seriously as we could practise more
We teamed up with Active Through Football and made history by playing the first inter-city asylum seeker competitive football match
We could not have done this without your grant.”
Vice Chairman of the London Wheelchair Rugby Club
said: "We appreciate all donations of any amount and would like to say a huge thank you to Cash4Clubs
These donations help fund anything from tournaments to tape and are essential in the progression of the club and our members
We certainly do encourage other clubs to apply for the scheme
and any ease of financial burden helps our players from grass roots to Paralympic glory."

2025A character in KFC UKI's recent ad depicts a woman baptizing a man into a lake made of gravy before he emerges as a piece of fried chicken
| Screenshot/YouTube/KFC UKIAn ad from KFC that debuted in the United Kingdom and Ireland earlier this month has prompted hundreds of complaints for depicting what some have interpreted as a mockery of Christian baptism and glamorizing of cultish behavior
The two-minute ad titled "Believe Part 2 All Hail the Gravy," which can be viewed on YouTube
depicts a young man walking through the woods when he stumbles across a chicken
He then encounters a group of people carrying a giant golden egg toward a lake of gravy
A female character then carries the man into the lake
where she dunks him in what appears to be an initiation ceremony before he emerges reborn as a fried KFC Mini Fillet
the ad has reportedly prompted nearly 600 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority
the U.K.'s independent advertising regulator
According to DecisionMarketing
the reason for the complaints about the KFC ad varied
with some alleging it was disturbing for children to see a man apparently drowned
while others were offended that the ad appeared to make light of baptism
"We’re currently assessing these to establish whether there are grounds for further action
we’ve not launched an investigation at this stage," a spokesperson for ASA told the outlet
Users on the marketing news site Marketing/Beat expressed disgust at the ad
with some calling it "disgusting," a "disgrace" and "beyond the pale." One user accused the ad of featuring and implying "many suspect attitudes
An official press release promoting the ad from KFC UKI described it as "an odyssey through the mystical woodland." It noted the large golden egg symbolized a "guiding light and provides the captivating beat for the choreographed procession of Believers
capturing the anticipation as one of the Believers is immersed in a pool of liquid gold gravy and emerges as a perfectly crispy KFC Mini Fillet above the shimmering gravy lake
“The modern-day fable explores the strong connection KFC fans have with the Original Recipe Chicken and a true cult favorite: the freshly made gravy.”
Monica Silic, chief marketing officer of KFC U.K. and Ireland, said the ad campaign is an attempt to "bring an entertaining antidote to this dull, chaotic world," according to Adweek
which is to bring some lightness and levity to the chaotic world through the truth of our product," she said

Camila Franco knew she wanted to have something like Uki Bowlz
but she did not expect it to happen in her 20s
She worked at a smoothie bar in college while studying exercise science
But she didn’t want to be stuck doing something she didn’t truly want to do
she was still holding the dream of a smoothie shop in her heart but didn’t know where to begin
Rather than find another job that might leave her unfulfilled
she enrolled in a ten-week course on building a business plan instead
and identified the target market for what would become Uki Bowlz
and it pushed me to open my shop,” Franco said
She began browsing for shops with the intention of opening later but found the perfect shop in October 2023 at 3 E
Although this kicked her plan into high gear
She completed the course in November with her business already underway
A gap Franco recognized in smoothie and juice shops was the inability to order a latte or drip coffee
adding coffee was more than addressing a gap for Franco
It was a way to connect her business to her roots
one of the top-producing coffee nations in the world
We kind of grew up around coffee without really knowing it,” she said
She began surrounding herself with coffee — reaching out to local coffee shops and farmers and attending cupping events where attendees can sample different beans
Ultimately, she decided to feature mostly Colombian coffee from Unlocked Coffee Roasters in the shop to honor her background and açaí’s roots in Brazil
Açaí comes from the berry of the açaí palm
The union was innovative and a way for her to bring a little bit of South America to the Upstate
The bowls will have four bases for patrons to choose from: Brazilian açaí
Granola will be gluten-free and made in-house
A significant focus for Franco was ensuring complete transparency in the food she served
Although her supplier offers a premade base for açaí
raw option to negate additives and minimize sugar content
That’s really what I want to bring to the community,” she said
“We’re going to make everything in-house.”
The eatery will have a retail element, selling coffee, granola and merchandise. Loose-leaf teas from Methodical Coffee will also be available
The shop will have an outside area which is expected to open in the summer

Paragon buys brand as sister company exits
owner of Office Depot and the Spicers wholesale brand
has declared it will withdraw from the UK and Ireland market
Blaming a “sustained period of difficult trading conditions”
the company sold its Office Depot business
A contemporaneous deal saw OT Group sell its 5 Star brand of office supplies to VOW Wholesale
Carrying out a comprehensive review of its UK and Irish business
OT Group found that the post-Covid slump in demand for office products was not likely to end
with low office occupancy rates and new working practices to blame
“The company does not expect office occupancy rates to increase significantly in the foreseeable future
and it has also concluded that the current over-supply of warehousing and distribution facilities in the UK office supplies market is not sustainable,” a letter to OT Group’s suppliers read
OT Group’s sale of Office Depot has already seen all bar eight of OT Group’s UK and Ireland employees transfer to Paragon
its sister company under investment company Grenadier Holdings
which was itself called Paragon Group until it rebranded in July 2023
The number of employees involved was not disclosed
The group employed 553 as of its accounts to 30 June 2022 accounts; that year
the company posted sales of £120.8m and registered an underlying operating loss of £9.3m
compared with sales of £83.8m and an underlying operating loss of £10.7m the prior year
Some of the employees now with Paragon will accordingly be transferred to VOW Wholesale
which OT Group said will take care of product supply and distribution services for the Office Depot business under a long-term contract
Printweek understands that some roles are likely to be made redundant following an employee consultation process at Paragon and VOW Wholesale
“The services provided by Office Depot are highly complementary to Paragon's strategy and add a further business service to its growing portfolio,” read a statement from Paragon on the sale
there are clearly opportunities to consolidate and reinforce parallel customer relationships.
“Implementing product supply and distribution services via a third-party logistics model
under a long-term contract with VOW Wholesale
allows us to focus on those customer relationship under a more efficient and cost-effective operating model."
OT Group will withdraw entirely from the wholesale business under its Spicers brand
selling off the 5 Star brand to VOW Wholesale and winding down the rest of its business solvently through a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) to pay off creditors
A spokesperson for Grenadier Holdings and OT Group told Printweek: “Supplier relationships are very important to Grenadier Holdings and the companies within the Group
“It is the intention within the CVA that OT Group pay 100% of reconciled and agreed balances
That intention is facilitated by a substantial voluntary contribution of funds by Grenadier Holdings."
OT Group said it expected payments to be phased over a period of no more than nine months
Anthony Collier and Philip Reynolds of FRP Advisory set up a moratorium on 2 August to establish “breathing space”
the moratorium was subsequently extended to 9 September
OT Group’s 2023 accounts were overdue to Companies House

Paddy Power World Darts Championship semi-finalist Chris Dobey hit the bullseye in Sunderland – by surprising a local deaf darts team and revealing they are one of 200 clubs to win a share of £400,000 worth of vital funding from Flutter UKI
The world number eight and local legend stunned members of Sunderland Deaf Society's Darts team by travelling from his nearby home in Bedlington and joining them for a quick practice session at The Victory - the only deaf-run pub in the UK
He was there to reveal the team has secured a £2,000 ‘Cash4Clubs’ grant –which will fund training gear and cover the costs associated with competing in tournaments
including the Deaf Darts Organisation's Grand Slam in Leicester in July 2025
It is one of many clubs running activities from American Football to Zumba that are being awarded a grant by Flutter UKI –home to Paddy Power
After delighting the Sunderland Deaf Darts team
Dobey stayed around to give players some vital tips with the help of a sign language interpreter – and admitted the visit had a far bigger impact on him than expected
He said: “It was really humbling to see the passion this team has for darts and to understand how important it is to them
It’s much more than a sport; it’s a social outlet and a place to build friendships
“You speak to people like Millie Perkin and Darren Davison
and you realise that being part of this team has given them much more confidence
That is obviously what Cash4Clubs is all about - providing the funding to help these clubs stay in business
Dobey added: “Obviously when I’m on the oche
you feed off the noise of the crowd and the atmosphere
I’ve just never considered what it must be like not to be able to hear that or how isolating living in a silent world might be.”
