Nevada clawed its way back from an early four-run deficit, and Sean Yamaguchi put the cap on the comeback, slamming a two-out, walk-off home run to give the Wolf Pack the series with a 6-5 win over Fresno State.
The win brings Nevada (27-19, 14-9 MW) within a game of the Bulldogs (23-23, 15-8 MW) for first place in the Mountain West standings ahead of Sunday's series finale at 12:05 p.m.
Saturday, it was reliever Dominic Desch, who got his fifth win of the season, shutting down Fresno State over the final 3.1 innings to set up the comeback.
The teams were knotted at 5-5 from the bottom of the sixth until two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when Yamaguchi hit a no-doubter on a 1-1 offering from Bulldog reliever JT Guerrero to end it. The homer highlighted a 2-for-5, two-homer day for the Wolf Pack freshman.
Michael Ball also went deep and drove in two key runs for Nevada—his first-inning solo homer got the scoring started, then his deep fly ball to center brought in the tying run in the sixth.
Fresno State took its first lead of the series with four runs on a two-out rally in the second. Facing Wolf Pack starter Alessandro Castro and with a runner at third and two out, the Bulldogs tied it as Owen Faust fisted a bloop single to right.
Singles from Cam Schneider and Sky Collins loaded the bases, setting up Griffin Sotomayor to line one the opposite way and just inside the first-base line for a bases-clearing double and a 4-1 Fresno State lead.
Castro would settle in, though, giving up just one run from the third to into the sixth, giving way to Desch with two out in the frame.
Bulldog starter Aidan Cremarosa also worked into the sixth, going 5.1 innings and giving up five runs while taking a no-decision.
Nevada crept its way back in, first getting Taylor Holder's RBI single to plate Billy Ham in the second, then Yamaguchi's solo homer in the fifth.
In the sixth, Murf Gray got Fresno State's lead back to two with a solo homer, but the Wolf Pack answered in the bottom half. One-out walks to Taylor Holder and Jacob Doyle started the rally, and Mason Hirata was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jake Harvey drew a bases-loaded walk off reliever Caleb Anderson to make it a one-run game before Ball's sacrifice fly plated Doyle to tie it at 5-5.

The Yamaguchi-gumi has submitted to the police a letter pledging that the designated yakuza group will end turf battles
the document — filed Monday by Yamaguchi-gumi executives with the Hyogo Prefectural Police headquarters in Kobe — also says the crime syndicate will not cause any trouble from now on.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
Turf battles have intensified since more than a dozen gangs bolted from the Yamaguchi-gumi to form a new group — the Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi — in 2015
with 150 incidents linked to their conflict occurring across Japan until last year
Underscoring the importance of closely watching how Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi reacts to the Yamaguchi-gumi's move
a high-ranking Hyogo police officer expressed the need to increase vigilance
Both groups have shrunk year after year since their turf war began
The combined number of members and quasi-members of the Yamaguchi-gumi stood at some 6,900 at the end of 2024
down from around 14,100 at the end of 2015
while the Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi's members and quasi-members have decreased more steeply to 320 or so

Through 1990, Yamaguchi competed in both singles and pairs (with Rudy Galindo). That year she qualified for the world championships in both events, placing fourth and fifth respectively. Then she dropped out of pairs to concentrate on singles and was rewarded with her first world championship title in 1991.

It’s not even past,” William Faulkner famously said—it’s just been suppressed by the present
but a living artist can find subtle beauty and inspiration in Old Master museum art—the subtle beauty of Lucas Cranach The Elder’s Venus
the majestic nude that presides over the scene in Takako Yamaguchi’s paintings
she presides over its bizarre spread with visionary intensity
indicating that Yamaguchi is a kind of fantasist
She wants to “revive the ghost of a lost style in the form of something vain and pretty,” she says
but however vain and pretty Cranach’s Venus is—her body is manneristically elongated
eternally thin as though suffering from incurable anorexia
small breasted as though an immature adolescent (a sort of Twiggy)
altogether unlike the full-bodied Venus of antiquity—she remains a powerful goddess
Her autonomy is not compromised by the presence of Mars or Adonis—any male lover
original vision of Goethe’s “eternal feminine that draws us on,” all the more so because she is eternally young
but her technique is decidedly modern: she paints on hammered bronze imperfectly aligned
But whether reclining at the bottom of the painting
or standing upright at the side of the painting
which she is in effect introducing to the audience
she points to—with her feet when she is reclining—a classical row of columns
the remains of a façade of a classical temple
are phallic in import—not just a very oblique allusion to a man
the marriage of the goddess of love and the god of war indicative of peace on earth—but imply that Cranach’s thin
small-breasted Venus is a so-called phallic woman
The idea that she is implicitly a male certainly explains her boyish body
Her small breasts are pro forma additives to an adolescent boy’s body
was worshipped on Cyprus.” Yamaguchi’s Venus is a not so “innocent bystander,” as the subtitle of the exhibition says she is
Yamaguchi’s works are pastoral allegories of death in paradise
with an oblique affinity to Poussin’s Et in Arcadia Ego
except that Yamaguchi’s Arcadia has seen better days in myth
just as her Venus has seen better days in antiquity and
But what gives Yamaguchi’s paintings a feminist edge is that they imply that woman was more highly regarded and treated more respectfully in traditional art–she was a goddess--than in so-called avant-garde art
but they are misogynist and emotionally vicious

One of the reasons Nevada baseball coach Jake McKinley has high expectations for the 2025 season is because his starting lineup is chock-full of upperclassmen
the projected starter at third base who everybody on the Wolf Pack is forecasting big things from this year
"He's been awesome," McKinley said
"He's an incredibly talented player
he's one of the most talented freshmen I've ever had."
Added preseason All-Mountain West infielder Michael Ball: "I've never met a more polished player than Sean at the age that he's at
That kid has professional tools right now as an 18-year-old."
And preseason All-MW outfielder Taylor Holder: "He's definitely been eye opening
and I've played played college baseball for a while now
and I haven't seen many freshmen do what he's been doing."
Yamaguchi has been a star for quite a while
He led his Honolulu-based Little League team to the 2018 Little League World Series championship before starring at Saint Louis High under coach and former big-leaguer Benny Agbayani where he was Hawaii's Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior
Nevada was worried Yamaguchi might be picked in last year's MLB draft
Yamaguchi landed with the Wolf Pack for his freshman season
"We call him Fred Flintstone because he just swings at everything and he hits everything out," preseason All-MW pitcher Ethan O'Neal said
"He'll hit a ball out that's two feet over his head
so there's no doubt he's going to be a big part of this year."
"He just plays with tremendous confidence
and one of the things that's tricky for freshmen is to navigate the ups and the downs
and he bounces back so good from the downs
and he has a maturity that's pretty rare for a kid that age."
D1Baseball, the authority on covering the college game, tabbed Yamaguchi as the MW's preseason freshman of the year
who will play next to Yamaguchi as Nevada's shortstop
said he knew the freshman was more advanced that your typical rookie even before the bomb against Vanderbilt
"Watching his BP is pretty incredible," Ball said
"His approach at the plate is really mature
but at the same time you can look at him talking to himself in the box and he's competing
It's fun to watch his process and also his level of comfort out here and the confidence in his own abilities has just shown
He's just got a giant smile painted across his face 24/7
including 5-0 in the Little League World Series
Wolf Pack assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jordan Getzelman had been recruiting Yamaguchi for a number of years before landing his commitment over recruitment from Cal
Yamaguchi 's Nevada teammates have had fun looking back at old videos of him during those Little League World Series days
"We've made fun of him a few times," O'Neal said
we had a day where we just went on YouTube and looked up 'Sean Yamaguchi' on YouTube and saw all of his highlights and his interviews
The exposure being at such a big stage and just having that push and the following of
I really have to do this,' he's been doing this for his whole life
But he's been doing it at a different level than I think a lot of us have
He's had that exposure and the outside pressure of
'You're going to have to be really good.'"
both in terms of his ability to hit immediately at the college level — the Wolf Pack opens the season Friday at Cal — and from a personality standpoint as he's already emerged as a leader for the younger group of Wolf Pack players
"He is hilarious and he brings a lot of positivity to the clubhouse," O'Neal said
"When you're performing and you're positive
I've noticed everyone's work ethic has definitely gotten a lot better
and he's definitely the leader of that group."

it's going to be my first Champions League semi-final
but I'm taking it as if it were a match like any other
I'm not putting any particular pressure on (playing ) them
even though they're a club with big players and on paper they're very strong
they have individual qualities that are far superior to ours perhaps
Al Nassr is a club that's been in the news a lot since Ronaldo's arrival..
"I think it's a chance to make my name known to the general public
and not just in Japan but more internationally
so for me I'm taking it more as a chance
as an opportunity to put in a good performance."
Is it scary facing a team with so many big stars
"I think it's more the team in general; after all
I have to be more on the lookout for certain actions
shots that are completely different from those I might receive in Japan
"All these things will be different depending on the players on the pitch
so I just have to be attentive and I can't be the only one paying attention
I have to direct my defence so that they too are alert to these options."
"We haven't done any special training or anything
because we haven't had much time to prepare (they played their quarter-final on Sunday evening)
it's more a question of getting into 100% physical condition
even if it's not the same Ronaldo as 10 years ago and you can see a few changes in his style of play
but on the team in general and how they use their star players to win."
they're not playing at the peak of their powers
so there's bound to be a difference compared to what they've done in the past
The Saudi league isn't as good as the top European leagues
but it's true that it's close."
Conversely, what are Kawasaki 's strengths? You managed to knock out Qatari league leaders Al Sadd in the quarter-finals
"We have players with individual qualities
but I find that collective quality is superior to individual quality
whether it's defensively or offensively
So I think that's where we have a lot to play for
The Japanese style is to play together more
Thebault-Yamaguchi during the quarter-final against Al Sadd on 27 April.ČTK / imago sportfotodienst / Abdullah AhmedDo you feel the team is strong enough to go far
"I think we have the potential to do great things
We don't have to adapt and try to change our style of play because they are great players
I think we need to make things difficult for them
knowing that they haven't necessarily had much experience of playing against Japanese teams
"And I wouldn't say that Japanese teams are 'underrated'
They do a lot of things that are perhaps a little different from the norm
that's the most important thing and I think it's one of our strengths."
What was your objective in the Champions League
since the start of the season we've had four possible cups to win this year and we want all four."
Talking of yourself, how did you end up as Kawasaki Frontale's first-choice keeper
"I went out and got it, because it wasn't easy. I worked hard for it. I started out playing football in Japan, with FC Tokyo, and then I spent three years at the FC Lorient training centre
I made my professional debut in Spain and then came back to Japan
"When I came back to Japan it was complicated to find a first division club where I could have played from the start
I preferred to drop down a level to get some playing time
I managed to climb the ladder and today I find myself as a first-team regular at this big club in Japan."
but at the time it was complicated: you didn't necessarily play much
I didn't have any doubts because I knew that these were experiences I had to go through
that I had to go through them to achieve what I wanted
it's very important to go through these stages
"I think that all goalkeepers have gone through those stages
not getting much playing time and having to compete with a lot of other players
I think it's an experience I needed to have
I think that experience helped me to get this starting place today."
Thebault-Yamaguchi during a J-League match against Nagoya GrampusKenichiro Ogane / AFLO / ProfimediaDid you want to go back to Japan afterwards
I wanted to stay in Europe to reach the top European level
but I preferred to take a different route for that
which is what I'm doing at the moment
"So it's true that my decision wasn't easy
but the fact that my family is in Japan was an argument that weighed in the balance
And I have no regrets about coming back to Japan
So it's a plus for me that my family is close by."
maybe your performances will be noticed and you'll be able to go back to Europe
that's definitely something I'm keeping in mind."
If someone had told you when you left Lorient that you'd be playing in a Champions League semi-final against Ronaldo

Restauranteur Mark Liu has opened a new place
aiming to make it stand out as an Asian restaurant serving authentic flavors with a modern twist
who came to El Paso when he helped open Crazy Crab in 2021
first opened a smaller Sakura Ramen restaurant in the former Yamaguchi Ramen Bar
The restaurant has thrived as students and their families have become frequent customers
Yamaguchi moved to Zaragoza and now has two locations
but now we realized that the location is too small
and we wanted to do some improvements upon that
Liu has taken steps to ensure the new restaurant
He has hired two New York chefs to lead in the kitchen
Unlike many restaurants that have scaled down their menus
Sakura Ramen has quite an extensive menu offering dumplings and fried oyster appetizers
and traditional Chinese dishes including General Tso's Chicken
Liu said he and his business partner discussed menu items and decided El Paso families needed options
"The majority of our clients are Hispanic families
So they might not want the same thing — adults may want ramen
Dining with any family members can be fun if you like sharing tasty dishes
I took my young adult sons and partner and we decided to each get something different: General Tso's Chicken ($12.99)
and the house special fried rice with vegetables ($13.99)
Among the most flavorful and complex dishes was the Spicy Xin Seafood Ramen with shrimp
We enjoyed the freshness inherent in the dishes
from the steamy fried rice and vegetables to the crunchy tempura and spicy
Liu said a couple of years ago he would not have described El Paso as diverse in terms of ethnic restaurants
And there are still a lot of Mexican restaurants
But he has started to see more ramen and Asian-food restaurants pop up in El Paso and he thinks it's good for all restaurants
He said he is friendly with many other Asian restaurant owners in the city
"We do have some competition with places like Noodles & Dumplings
And so I just think it doesn't matter how good your food is
you have to have different options," he said
Liu said he enjoys the city of El Paso and is a foodie himself
so he likes that more people are willing to try different types of foods in El Paso and that the Chinese community in El Paso tends to support each other
Here are some other new Asian restaurants opened recently in El Paso
brought her mother to El Paso a few months ago to help her finalize her menu for her new restaurant Thai Sol
This is the first restaurant venture for Magallanez
an enthusiastic young woman who grew up in a family with a food cart to support themselves
The restaurant menu is easy to read and appealing with photos and only one laminated sheet
Most of the dishes are reasonably priced from $8.99 to $10.99
The back of the menu features some yummy appetizers such as Thai spring rolls (four for $7.99) with Mung bean noodles
stir-fried together and then wrapped in wheat flour and deep-fried
are a must-try vegan delight — corn and flour triangular-shaped patties seasoned with a Thai seasoning and served with a sweet and chili sauce
The restaurant is not easily visible from North Zaragoza Road
so when new customers find the eatery and step in
Magallanez is excited to welcome you and demonstrate her great cooking skills
We tried various dishes and found them to be generously served and delicious
The dish is $10.99 and is a spicy stir-fry with mushrooms
We added chicken protein for an additional $2.99
The menu has it as a 5-chile spice level dish
but you can let servers know if you want to reduce the heat and make it a 1-chile
East Side and Horizon City folks continue to enjoy seeing new restaurants open along Eastlake Drive and one of the latest is Yamaguchi Ramen Bar
The restaurant management already had a successful location at 1700 N
Zaragoza Road and opened the second location in January
The restaurant offers a variety of popular ramen bowls such as the lobster tail bowl and build-your-own ramen bowls where you can add as many ingredients as you'd like
Leave room for dessert as they offer mochi
a fish-shaped ice cream bar and fried ice cream balls
The place has a cool vibe with warm red colors and colorful anime characters

Wearing strapping on her left knee, Olympic bronze medallist Tunjung made a number of errors early on, with Yamaguchi not having to be at her best to take an 11-5 lead into the mid-game interval.
The Japanese moved further clear after the break, showing off her trademark speed and anticipation to go 18-8 ahead before converting her third game point after just 14 minutes.
Tunjung, bidding for her first title since her triumph in Kumamoto 12 months ago, went into a 3-0 lead in the second game. But the home favourite reeled off the next six points in succession to regain the initiative.
Despite flashes of brilliance from the fifth seed, Yamaguchi was able to take an 11-8 advantage into the second mid-game interval before winning seven of the last eight points to seal her 15th victory over Tunjung in 20 meetings.
With Tunjung all but guaranteed a place in the season-ending BWF Tour Finals in Hangzhou, Yamaguchi's title saw her move above compatriot Miyazaki Tomoka into sixth in the race to the tournament.
Yamaguchi Akane: Why I need to stop overthinkingJapan's Yamaguchi Akane has been through a lot in her career
The former world number one and Youth Olympic Games silver medallist doesn't get rattled easily
but an injury last summer got her focusing on the mental side of the game
"I need to stop overthinking and just get back to enjoying the game of badminton," she said to Olympic Channel
21-13 to claim his first title since the US Open in July 2023
Li had won the pair's previous three meetings in straight games and raced into an early 6-1 lead with Leong - already sporting hefty strapping on both legs - taking a medical timeout for a grazed finger
won the battle for superiority at the net and stayed clear to take the opening game
Leong staged something of a fightback at the start of the second
the tank was all but empty with Li's tactical prowess seeing him win 14 of the next 16 points on his way to a victory that boosts his hopes of making the BWF Tour Finals on home soil

Satoshi hopes to understand his condition better and eventually return to the stage
Satoshi shared his unique life experiences—both successes and setbacks—and how they have shaped his attitude and perspectives on life
“I would be very happy if I could share with you some insights that I have gained through my experiences and words that have supported me during difficult times
and if they could provide some hints for your future life.” As students and alumni of SPICE’s courses reflected upon his talk
multiple insights that he shared especially stood out and are important lessons for youth
These insights are shared below through eight excerpts from his talk
I formed a metal rock band with my music-loving friends in my hometown of Yokohama and played the drums
I was so busy with my band and part-time job that I didn’t study much
It is hard to believe that I am speaking in English in front of you today
Satoshi’s presentation in English to the biggest audience of students SPICE has ever convened was an inspiration for students who are studying English in Japan and China
and English language learners in the United States
while reflecting upon a band competition as a high school student
… our [metal rock] band’s goal was to participate in a national high school music festival held once a year at Yokohama Arena
How fascinating to have the chance to perform on a stage big enough to hold 10,000 people
and we were unsuccessful in our first and second years
After successfully completing our performance as the first band
saying “None of the other bands were that good.” However
Some of the lyrics of one of their songs made me think that someone else seemed to know my heart better than I
Satoshi ended this segment of his talk by noting that “Perhaps the day will come when your biggest rival today will become your best friend.” This statement really seemed to have resonated in students
as they all knew that Satoshi eventually joined RADWIMPS
Satoshi reflected upon a life-long lesson that he learned from one of his fellow RADWIMPS band members
Toward the end of my first year of college
my [metal rock] band broke up and RADWIMPS was looking for a new drummer
but at the time I could only hit a simple 8-note beat
you are not allowed to play an 8-note beat without a reason.” When I was confused
“We are going to make music that has never been made before
We are aiming for a future where a genre called RADWIMPS will be born
you can’t just play the beats that have been around before
You have to pursue your own new beat.” At another time
“Your children and grandchildren will one day listen to the beats you play
Are you sure that’s the best beat?” It is embarrassing to look back now
but at the time I did not have his kind of vision at all
Satoshi underscored the importance of creativity
“You have to pursue your own new beat,” has remained in the minds of many students
Another insight that he shared was that “Out of limitations come innovations
‘What can I do then?’” One beat that was created at that time became the basis for the theme song of Your Name
while Satoshi openly shared his experience with musicians’ dystonia
I witnessed the very serious looks on the faces of the students and alumni
my right foot suddenly stopped moving while playing the drums
This was a symptom called musicians’ dystonia
The dystonia made it impossible for me to express myself musically as I had imagined
and I no longer found pleasure in playing music. Then in 2015
I made the decision to give up being the drummer of my favorite band in the world and take an indefinite hiatus
It was one of the heaviest and most painful moments of my life
I am confident that Satoshi’s reflections prompted many students to think about the “heaviest and most painful moments” in their lives and ask themselves
and how can we use these lessons as we go through our lives?”
Satoshi reflected upon the continued success of RADWIMPS and noted
When I was exhausted both mentally and physically
I loved the state of mind I was in when I was looking at this mountain. I felt that this town was calling me
I decided to move to Hayama with my family
I encountered these rice terraces… as I deepened my relationships with local farmers
I learned that rice terraces were facing a number of difficulties and their survival was at risk
I began to wonder if I could do something about this place that had saved my life
Hayama’s rice terraces are visited by Silicon Valley Keio International Program (SKIP)
an international exchange program between Keio and Stanford students
Satoshi is giving back to his community by “respecting tradition while innovating it,” and Satoshi hopes that all students will consider this as well for communities that have made a difference in their lives
RADWIMPS has become one of Japan’s leading bands
and Satoshi commented that “my three sons sing our songs every day
I am now once again feeling the amazing power of having a vision.” Satoshi urged the audience to “imagine what the future looks like
and then truly believe that it can be realized,” which is such a powerful message for youth
the film Your Name was released in September 2016
Satoshi was impressed with the film but felt that
“You made the wrong choice.” And I couldn’t even listen to the past songs of RADWIMPS anymore
I was also disappointed in myself for not being able to honestly be happy about the success of a band without me
But it was also music that saved me from such feelings…
who could not share in the worldwide success of Your Name
There might be other ways to find happiness
Satoshi decided to seek his “own kind of honest enjoyment” and encourages students to seek theirs as well
Seventh, during a recent research visit to Stanford University, he was introduced to Stanford Taiko through a student whom he met through SKIP, and also met Roy and PJ Hirabayashi, founding directors of San Jose Taiko
used to be a performer with both Stanford Taiko and San Jose Taiko
Reflecting on a San Jose Taiko performance
but this was the first time I had ever seen an encore that not only involved all of the performers but the audience as well dancing in a circle
It made me rethink the essence of what music is
And as I played with people who truly love taiko and music
I gradually remembered the joy of playing instruments
I want to play drums again… [While observing taiko and talking with PJ
Satoshi realized that] It is ‘using the voice to make the real bass drum sound.’ It happened while I was learning a new beat for taiko
He commented to students that “singing and the voice are the most fundamental instruments that humans have,” and that “other instruments are an extension of them.” He is currently working on the research and development of a new instrument using the voice
He believes that he will find his own “new sound” and the day will come when he will once again stand on stage as the drummer of RADWIMPS
Satoshi concluded his talk with two reflections on his life
The first was “Difficulties can be a catalyst to create new value.” He stated
difficulties are inevitable… No one in this world can live alone
‘What can I do for you?’” The second was “What has been does not determine what will be
but what will be gives meaning to what has been.” He stated
you may feel that ‘This is not how it was supposed to be.’ I believe that the important thing is not what you choose
I was on the verge of great global success but was unable to witness it
I would be happy [if you] remember that there is someone living life like this.”

SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2025 PlayLoading... Both countries confirm that a joint crackdown on transnational crime is underwayJapanese law enforcement authorities on Wednesday (April 9) thanked the Royal Thai Police (RTP) for arresting a Japanese national identified as “Yamaguchi,” the leader of the Yamaguchi-gumi—a well-known Japanese organized crime group.
The operation is part of the RTP’s ongoing crackdown on call center scam syndicates operating in Thailand and neighboring countries since February this year.
The meeting followed a major operation by Thai police targeting call center scam networks. In February 2025, Thai authorities arrested Yamaguchi, a Japanese national and leader of the infamous Yamaguchi-gumi.
Yamaguchi had been running call center scam operations based in Cambodia and Myawaddy, Myanmar, and was hiding in a luxury apartment in Bangkok's Sathorn district, using a high-end art photography website as a front for his illegal activities, Thatchai said.
Following his arrest, Yamaguchi was extradited to Japan, where his capture received widespread media coverage and drew strong public interest. The National Police Agency of Japan subsequently issued a formal certificate of gratitude to the Thai police and expressed deep appreciation for their efforts.
Thatchai added that during the discussions, Japanese police highlighted the severity of the call center scam problem in Japan, noting that many citizens have been defrauded of vast sums of money. Many of the call centers had been illegally established in Myawaddy and Cambodia, under Yamaguchi’s leadership.
Thailand and Japan have agreed to work closely together to eliminate call center scams, which are affecting citizens in both countries. This collaboration will include intelligence sharing, joint operations, and aggressive enforcement measures under what has been dubbed the "Bridge-Busting Operation"—a coordinated crackdown aimed at dismantling the networks and infrastructure supporting these criminal organizations, Thatchai said.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Yamaguchi has made a huge impact with her philanthropic and literary efforts. In 1996, she founded Kristi Yamaguchi's Always Dream
which champions early literacy by fostering family engagement and building a love of reading. “I feel books unlock the imagination in children
and that’s where dreams are born,” she says
Yamaguchi is a New York Times bestselling author herself
We asked Yamaguchi to share some of her California favorites and this is what she told us
Where do you live? The San Francisco Bay Area.
Why there? I was born and raised here
I’ve lived all over the continent but I love all that the Bay Area has to offer: culture
proximity to the mountains and wine country
Who or what is your greatest California love
What is the biggest misperception about Californians
That we hang out at the beach a lot and are surfers
What is the stereotype that most holds true? There’s lots of opportunity and innovation
What is your favorite Golden State splurge? Disneyland
with a visit with my two daughters who are going to school there.
If you could decree an official state culinary experience
what would it be? We have the best of all the different Asian cuisines—anything Pacific Rim.
What is your favorite way to play in California? I think of many outdoor activities like hiking
Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? I would have to say the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto
It has all of the major department stores and boutiques you’ll ever need
All in a beautiful outdoor setting with restaurants as well
Best California song? “Lights” by Journey

She was one of the most popular singers in all of China and Japan. A friend of Charlie Chaplin, she was also a well-known actress, appearing in a number of Akira Kurosawa movies
she was also a trailblazing politician who advocated for Palestinian rights over 50 years ago and a self-taught polyglot
Any one of these would make for an impressive lifetime achievement
But when fate asked Yoshiko Yamaguchi which legacy she wanted to go with
she refused to choose and picked all of the above
As we approach September 7 and the 10th anniversary of her death
let’s remember one of the most fascinating women in modern history
Born in 1920 to Japanese settlers in Manchuria
Yamaguchi spoke Japanese as her first language while picking up Mandarin and later even a little Russian after befriending one Lyuba Monosova Gurinets at her school
Yoshiko’s increasingly international upbringing was later supplemented by singing lessons from an Italian soprano
the young girl unknowingly laid down the foundation for her future
After Japan’s invasion of the region in 1931, Yamaguchi’s singing got her scouted by Man’ei, the Manchukuo Film Association, who, interestingly, would later give the world Japan’s first female director. Because she was fluent in Mandarin by then
Man’ei wanted Yamaguchi to use a name given to her by her Chinese godfathers: Li Xianglan — also spelled Li Hsiang-lan or Ri Koran in Japanese — and pretend that she was Chinese in a series of romance movies
These films actually turned out to be propaganda pieces about Chinese women falling in love with Japanese soldiers or sailors and so on
her character got slapped in China Nights (1940) after which she apologized and exclaimed
Perhaps because of her young age and a naive belief she was helping the people of Manchuria, whom she considered friends and family, Yamaguchi didn’t fully realize the purpose of her work. “I thought my films were simple romances,” she later told The Boston Globe in 1991
she publicly apologized for her role in Man’ei’s propaganda films and decried the invasion of Manchuria
This was a very risky move for an entertainer
One of the least controversial (at least in Asia) of her movies was Eternity (1943)
a joint Japanese-Chinese production shot in Shanghai in which the two countries worked together
united by their shared hatred of the British
the film became a hit thanks to its catchy songs
Many are still considered Chinese pop classics and
made Xianglan one of the most popular singers in all of China
She was equally popular as Ri Koran in Japan, where her performances always attracted crowds of people. Yet as she wrote in Fragrant Orchid: The Story of My Early Life (published in 1987)
During a Beijing press conference held shortly after the premiere of Eternity
she was questioned by a journalist about her roles in Man’ei propaganda films and was finally asked: “Where is your pride as a Chinese?” She wrote that she almost broke down and disclosed her Japanese heritage but ultimately restrained herself
talking and dressing a little too Chinese for their liking
She saw herself as a person of two nations
with China being her “home country” (or “fatherland” in some translations) and Japan her “ancestral country” (or “motherland”)
one incident would eventually force her to declare herself for one country or risk death
Xianglan was arrested in Shanghai and sentenced to death by firing squad for “collaborating” with Japanese imperial forces as a Chinese citizen
Her parents thankfully managed to find her Japanese birth certificate but due to travel restrictions
it had to be smuggled into Shanghai inside the head of a geisha doll with help from Xianglan’s old friend Gurinets
it also ended her career in mainland China
with one judge calling the young woman “a Chinese impostor who used her outstanding beauty to make films that humiliated China and compromised Chinese dignity.” In 1946
Xianglan went on hiatus as Yoshiko Yamaguchi and relocated to Japan to continue her acting career
Yamaguchi quickly found work with Kurosawa
she starred in Scandal opposite screen legend Toshiro Mifune
Shirley Yamaguchi appeared in a few movies and one Broadway musical using the English skills she perfected in Shanghai
It was during this time that she befriended Chaplin while working on the soundtrack for Limelight (1952)
her association with Chaplin led to her being barred from the country as the famous actor was forced to leave the States following an FBI anti-Communist investigation
Yamaguchi briefly resurrected the name Xianglan and appeared in a few Chinese-language movies shot in British-controlled Hong Kong
and Li Xianglan and Yoshiko Yamaguchi were both put to rest
the new wife of the Japanese diplomat Hiroshi Otaka
whose work took the couple to Sri Lanka and Myanmar
Yoshiko Otaka entered the world of journalism
working her way up to the position of a news anchor for Fuji TV in 1969
where she reported on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
she was elected to the House of Councilors
She spent the rest of her life championing women’s rights around the world before passing away at age 94
A program focused on developing children's reading literacy has expanded to schools in Lahaina for the first time
The Kristi Yamaguchi's Always Dream reading program will be at 19 schools in Hawaiʻi this school year
including Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena and King Kamehameha III Elementary schools
Students and families at these Lahaina schools were affected by last year's wildfires that destroyed the historic town
Executive Director Aarika Riddle said the complex areas were selected by the Hawaiʻi Department of Education
She said reading at a young age is crucial to a child's development
the shared reading experience can often be something that helps to strengthen families
and can be a stepping stone to get families engaged in their child's education,” Riddle said
Riddle said she anticipates the program will be working with 120 students in pre-K and kindergarten
Students in the program will get to take home printed books and a tablet with a digital library
The families will be provided with an online coach who will lay out reading times between parents and children
“Our book coaches help families leverage all of those tools and resources that we give them and work with them to broaden access to books
coach them through increasing their at home reading time and engaging in their child's learning journey,” Riddle said
The Kristi Yamaguchi Always Dream organization was founded in 1996 by the Olympic figure skater
The program currently provides access to early literacy resources
It's also the program's 10th anniversary working with students in Hawaiʻi.
made her United States fan event debut by giving a Q&A and participating in a live drawing
she discussed her relationship with her art
Blue Period is a story about growing as an artist
I'm curious if any of your experiences growing up as an artist mirror any of the characters in the series
I wanted to draw manga ever since I was young
but didn't think about making it a career until I made it to college
that was definitely the main focus that I wanted to show in this story
Can you explain the significance of the color and its use in the manga
Yamaguchi: So maybe the use of the color blue wasn't personal per se
but rather it was going back to Japanese culture
There is a phrase in Japanese that describes adolescence called seishun
which means "blue spring." That's one of the reasons why I wanted to emphasize the color blue
he describes a scene where all these juvenile delinquents hang out all night
and that description really left an impression on me
So that's the basis for the main character's first painting in the story
I wish I had more opportunities to show the manga in color to emphasize the characters' explanations about their works
One character whose story resonated with me personally and many people I know was Yuka
who goes through an arc regarding their identity and finding out what they want out of life
Can you tell me a little about the inception of their character and the path you wanted them to go on
I did go through the struggle of figuring things out myself as well
I had a friend who was kind of in a similar situation
So that's kind of where I got the inspiration to go into this topic as well
But I think it's just something that everyone goes through
I'd argue there isn't a character like her in many anime or manga these days
so it was great to watch and read about them
Yamaguchi: I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the character so much
As someone who doesn't do much drawing or has a talent for it
I appreciate how much Blue Period broke down different styles and techniques
how much research did you do into these different artistic methods
Are there any other techniques that stand out to you as difficult or hard to grasp
Yamaguchi: I absolutely did a lot of research before I started to write the series
and students to get a sense of what modern challenges and struggles are
What kind of questions are being asked in art school
I tried to get diverse perspectives through books and people
the most challenging part was finding my own style
Do you have a favorite piece of art done by one of the characters in the series
Yamaguchi: If I had to choose a favorite…all of them are my favorite
But there was one scene that stuck out to me
the art club practiced drawing different objects as a subject
I also participated in this exercise in the past
drawing the same figure over and over again with other artists
But it's been a while since I've done figure drawing
so I really don't think I could do it as well as I used to
So the art sticks out to you because you know firsthand how intense that is
Is there any artwork in the real world that speaks to you the same way that some pieces speak to the characters in the story
Yamaguchi: I don't know if there is a favorite piece of mine that actually influences the manga itself
but I always liked the works of Francis Bacon
I was going to write about Andy Warhol in the story
so I actually did an intensive study about him
I think I appreciate his artwork a lot more
Art can leave a strong impression on people
What kind of impression do you hope your manga leaves on your readers
I wanted to make a character who was different from what I had seen before
Instead of having a character who's only good at one thing
I wanted to make a character who is somewhat good at everything but started from zero regarding art
I wanted the series to be easy to remember alongside Picasso
“This is what I want you to take away,” then the fans might feel forced to feel that way
But when I'm reading somebody else's manga
I really enjoy those moments where I feel like my perspective on everything has been impacted
So I am hoping that maybe my manga will someday have an impact like that to the readers

The first medal contest of the second day of competition in Tashkent pitted Momo Tatsukawa (JPN) against Laura Vazquez Fernandez (ESP)
The Spanish competitor had done her homework and did everything she could to control the sleeve of her opponent
in an effort to neutralise her best positions
However Tatsukawa is an ashi-waza expert and can throw with or without her favourite grip and within the first 90 seconds had two yuko scores on the board
The time ticked away and Vazquez Fernandez had no choice but to engage even more and as she did
The first medal of day2 was heading to Japan
stepped on to the mats looking for her 9th grand slam medal
with two previous grand slam medals to her name
The second bronze medal of the category was a big prize for either but it was the Brazilian who came out stronger
after a short break for some minor first aid treatment
Oberan came back with a renewed spirit and immediately set up a fast sumi-gaeshi which scored waza-ari
powerless to do anything against the Croatian
A second waza-ari came less than a minute later and the bronze medal was Iva Oberan’s
Kirari Yamaguchi (JPN) and Inbal Shemesh (ISR) came forward
each aware of the other’s skills and preferences
Shemesh put in a huge effort to pick up her opponent but Yamaguchi was ready for it and could avoid a bad situation
a sort of stalemate was reached and both were penalised
two sacrifice techniques from two exchanges
Yamaguchi anticipated the second and used the transition phase to find her advantage
She held Inbal Shemesh for ippon to win her first grand slam gold medal

Five people in Fukuoka Prefecture have filed a lawsuit seeking roughly ¥22.5 million ($157,400) in damages
including compensation for losses and emotional distress
The plaintiffs claim they were defrauded of a total of about ¥18 million by a member of the syndicate
who has already been convicted of fraud in a criminal trial
filed Tuesday in the Fukuoka District Court
names four defendants including the group’s boss
77-year-old Kiyoshi Takayama.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
The lawsuit was filed under a system introduced by the Fukuoka Prefectural Police in June 2023 that covers legal costs such as attorney investigations and court record copying fees
which caps support at ¥500,000 ($3,500) per case
is available when yakuza-related criminal cases result in a guilty verdict
the plaintiffs argue that Shinoda and other senior Yamaguchi-gumi figures bear organizational responsibility under the law against illegal activity by members of organized crime groups
Police in Fukuoka and Aichi prefectures also issued provisional orders to the four defendants on Tuesday
demanding that they not obstruct the legal proceedings
This marks only the second time the system has been used
when relatives of victims of attacks linked to the Kudokai gang

Octopus in vinegar sauce at Yamaguchi in Port Washington
There’s nothing fancy about Port Washington’s oldest sushi spot
opened by Akira and Yasuko Yamaguchi in 1988
it was one of very few sushi bars on Long Island; but now Yamaguchi is one of several within a three-block radius
not only does it stick to its traditional guns in the face of fusion and ever-more-elaborate maki rolls
black tables and chairs with Japanese Shoji screens partitioning the room
because the emphasis here is squarely on the fish: hopping fresh and simply prepared
Ask what the chefs recommend on any given day; fluke usuzukuri
and salmon roe with grated yam are perpetual standouts
Sashimi and sushi includes the usual suspects
awabi (abalone) and uni (sea urchin) that deliver a briny wallop
Rolls are standard affair — bearing none of the bells and whistles of rolls at nearby spots like Tiga and Hana — but they are excellent
Yamaguchi’s kitchen specializes in homestyle dishes such as chawanmushi
a delicate savory custard steamed in a special porcelain cup
as well as starters drawn from the izakaya (bar snack) tradition
ebi shinjo (fried shrimp patties) and nasu hasami age (fried eggplant stuffed here with crabmeat)
Warm your belly with over a dozen noodle dishes and soba and udon soups

Yamaguchi has the edge over the Paris 2024 Olympic gold medallist in Hangzhou
Yamaguchi, currently ranked fourth, seized a 1-hour, 11-minute lung-buster over An 21-15, 17-21, 22-20 in Group B, exacting revenge for her three-game quarter-final defeat at the Games in Paris this summer.
An jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first game as if to exercise her bragging rights but Yamaguchi began chipping away at her advantage, finally moving in front 15-14.
An had game point at 20-19, but Yamaguchi dug deep to restore parity before winning the last two points to go up a set.
That’s the way it went for the remaining two games, neither shuttler giving away an inch. The final set broke open at 9-9, when Yamaguchi won seven of the next nine points to move ahead 16-11 and scoring the last four points of the match unchallenged to seal the deal.
the two trading point for point midway through
Christie won 12 of the next 15 points to capture the set
The Indonesian was in the driver’s seat from early on in the second game
Naraoka got as close as 6-4 but not closer as Christie stayed ahead before winning the last five points of the match
coming back from a set down to edge the Olympic silver medallist from Thailand 14-21
going to three games to quiet the home crowd against women’s second-ranked Wang Zhiyi 21-17
