A new development off Interstate 95's Yamato Road exit and east of Congress Avenue in Boca Raton will include apartments
an amateur athletic facility and a restaurant on Park of Commerce Boulevard
The proposal was approved by the Boca Raton City Council in mid-April
The development will convert an already existing 130,500-square-foot office building into a property with multiple facilities
including a fast-casual restaurant and bar
while still maintaining more than 46,600 square feet of office space
The new development is located between Clint Moore and Yamato Roads
just west of Interstate 95 and east of Congress Avenue
226 will be in an eight-story apartment building and the other 17 will be distributed throughout three townhome-style buildings
Twenty-five of these units will be considered affordable housing and 13 will be designated as workforce housing units
Workforce housing is a type of affordable housing program that is for residents who aren't necessarily low-income
but have a hard time making enough money to live in a region with a costly real estate market like Palm Beach County
Affordable housing is for residents considered to be low-income or unemployed
While the development is largely residential
the restaurant and bar will be open to the public
visitors will need to walk through the facility to get to the food court
who owns a commercial building on Congress Avenue
agrees with providing more affordable housing in Boca Raton
But Ounjian said he doesn’t believe the current plan makes good use of the 10 acres of land on Park of Commerce Boulevard
“Where this whole development is happening is literally on a sliver of what looks to be a quarter of these 10 acres
We are putting 243 units on two acres or so,” he said
which is 62 more than the city requires for the size of this facility
“We have very high hopes that our amateur athletic facility will be very successful
and we’re hoping that on the weekends when all the residents are home and their cars are parked
that there is ample parking for people to come to the amateur facility as well,” said Ele Zachariades
the urban planner and zoning lawyer who secured the development deal

Historic kimono purveyor Yamato has enlisted its Yamato Lab team and the manufacturers at Tailor Toyo to reinterpret its vintage souvenir jacket design in the form of traditional garb
As multi-generational companies specializing in cultural garments
the kimono purveyor and the sukajan manufacturer’s hybrid garment represents the resilient creative spirit of Japan and its strong roots in ancient heritage
Yamato began producing traditional kimonos in Koishikawa
and consistently grew throughout the 20th century
the garment’s roots go back much further
the design evolved in construction and ornament
becoming a canvas for vibrant designs and symbolic motifs
Some of these artistic themes inspire embroideries found on modern souvenir or “sukajan” jackets
which were introduced by Tailor Toyo’s predecessor
The idea was to take a silhouette familiar to Americans
and imbue it with Japanese flair through cultural motifs
The style was popular among American soldiers stationed in the Pacific and eventually made its way to vintage shops around the world
In February 2025, the Yamato Museum (Kure Maritime History and Science Museum) in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture
The museum conveys both the hidden stories behind the construction of the famed battleship Yamato — once called the largest battleship in history — and the value of peace
As one of Japan's leading facilities for learning about the former Imperial Navy's history and technological capabilities
2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II
Although the local community understands the need for renovation
Alternative facilities are being used to fill the gap
Whether they can truly make up for the loss remains to be seen
the opening day of the Yamato Museum Satellite
Niihara urged people to explore the charm of this historic naval port through related attractions while the main museum is closed
The Yamato Museum opened in 2005 to commemorate 60 years since the end of the war
It presents Kure as a city of shipbuilding and introduces the technologies used to construct the battleship Yamato.
With a 1:10 scale model of the Yamato as its centerpiece
the museum welcomed an astounding 1.6 million visitors in its first year — far surpassing its goal of 400,000
it had hosted around 16 million visitors from Japan and abroad
These are remarkable figures for a regional city
there were issues with the visitor experience
the air-conditioning system was due for replacement
the city decided to embark on a major renovation
aiming to reduce congestion and switch to LED lighting
the goal was to reopen in time for the museum's 20th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of the Yamato's sinking
"delays in procuring materials and the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans."
Once the museum reopens at the end of fiscal year 2025
it will feature enhanced displays using digital technology
the Yamato Museum is the city's star attraction
There are legitimate concerns that a drop in visitors during the closure could negatively affect the local economy
the city is placing its hopes on the new satellite facility
The main attraction is a full-scale model of the Zero Observation Plane
the aircraft was developed for artillery spotting and was installed aboard the Yamato
A 1:100 scale model of the battleship has also been moved here for display
Digital panels introduce other vessels constructed at the Kure Naval Arsenal
"The Zero Observation Plane was a vital component of the Yamato's gunnery system," says Kazushige Todaka
The Yamato had a firing range of over 40,000 meters
But range alone wasn't enough — accuracy was everything
And that depended on the information gathered by the observation planes
a line of visitors had already formed before it opened its doors
"It's rare to see one displayed as if floating on water." Pre-opening publicity may have helped the strong turnout
The Houhaikan, a tourist facility that opened in 2018, is housed in a brick warehouse built by the Navy during the late Meiji era
It stands across from a city park where visitors can view submarines up close
the Houhaikan is serving as a temporary exhibition space
It features a 1:50 scale model of the Yamato's 46-cm main gun turret and a 1:10 model of a machine gun
Other must-see sites include the Irifuneyama Memorial Museum
built around the former Kure Naval District Commander's Residence (designated an Important Cultural Property in 1998)
The latter features Japan's first submarine to be displayed on land
With vivid exhibits and displays on mine-clearing missions
it remains popular — on par with the Yamato Museum
"I was able to explore the inside of the submarine Akishio in detail," said one visitor during the closure
but we want to turn Kure tourism's pinch into an opportunity."
Kure is a core city in Hiroshima Prefecture
It lies near the center of the Seto Inland Sea and boasts a naturally deep and well-protected harbor
it became home to the Kure Naval District of the former Imperial Navy
Kure is one of the "Four Former Naval Port Cities." In 2016
these cities were recognized as a Japan Heritage site for offering "a living experience of Japan's modernization."

continues its journey towards the galaxy's center
back on Earth the Dezarium consolidate their stranglehold on human society
Not even an organized rebellion shifts political opinion towards their opponents
What are their true intentions towards humanity
and are they really our descendants from the thirty-second century
Be Forever Yamato: Star Blazers REBEL 3199 streams on Crunchyroll
Sometimes being a fan of the Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers remake series is suffering
it's a stunningly successful update of the 1970s/80s original
one of the most glossy modern sci-fi anime in existence; on the other
the lengthy wait between releases is nothing short of painful
Because of its unusual theatrical-first release strategy
every 26-episode season is released into Japanese movie theatres in small chunks of two to four episodes every six months
While we received REBEL 3199's third chapter on April 11th
chapter four won't grace our screens until October 10th
I suppose the show proves its worth when the worst criticism I have is that I can't devour the whole thing quickly enough
REBEL 3199 Chapter 3: Ultramarine Asteroid
only continues to cement this season's claim to be the best Yamato since 2199
Perhaps even more so than any previous remake Yamato
REBEL 3199's story is complex and multifaceted
with its huge cast split across the cosmos
We follow not only Kodai and crew on the Yamato on their latest desperate journey
but several groups of characters back on Earth who react to the rapid sociological changes there with varying degrees of militance
Claiming to be humanity's digitally augmented post-human descendants from a millennium in the future
the creepy Dezarium attempt to integrate themselves into 2207 human culture
the viewer isn't entirely sure whether to take the Dezarium at their word regarding their origins
It certainly seems like individual Dezarium believe the story they spout
it's almost impossible for them to prove their claims
A group of insurgents successfully attacks the Grand Reverse
and threatens to destroy Van Gogh's famous Starry Night painting to force a time paradox
(The Dezarium provides possibly shaky evidence that the painting still exists in their future.)
While I can't possibly condone the flagrant destruction of such historically significant art
it's obvious what drives the characters to such lengths
The very existence of the Dezarium is some dark Black Mirror-esque stuff
with their ability to remotely switch bodies
and their universal adoption of mind-synchronization devices that ensure they all adhere to their ruling AI hivemind's wishes
Is every human being destined to have their mind wiped
to become nothing but spare terminals for Dezarium mind-downloads
Even when faced with public exposure of this plot
the slippery Dezarium leader Skaldart manages to twist it to his advantage
to shift the public's ire towards the blue-skinned Gamilans in their midst
The Dezarium is hardly a monolith of insidious evil
As part of their plans for social integration
eight hundred children are sent to register at elementary schools in the city surrounding the Grand Reverse
if slightly blank-expressioned girl who befriends Tsubasa Kato
son of former Yamato nurse Makoto Kato and deceased officer Saburo Kato
Frulu stands at the school gates handing out those small
red “comm medals,” informing the human children that if they wear them
they will be able to hear the voice of “Mother,” and they'll never be lonely again
That starts to humanize her robotic behaviour
The subsequent softening of her schoolmates' attitude to her then leads to scores of them accepting the “gift” of the sinister control devices…
I welcome REBEL 3199's subtle and complex thought experiment when it comes to Tsubasa and Frulu
apart from her terrifyingly efficient digital memorization of entire books and photocopier-like artistic abilities
Her father seems like he genuinely cares for his daughter
and they spend time appreciating the natural joys of planet Earth
She even learns to draw from her heart like a human (let's hope she doesn't turn out to be merely a humanoid form of soulless image-generation AI)
I can't help but think that Mother's intention for the Dezarium children is cynically manipulative
while the children themselves are but innocent pawns
the Yamato speeds towards the nearest subspace gate to take a shortcut across the galaxy
Their intended destination is the “Spacetime Connection Point” at the galaxy's center
the place where the Dezarium claim they gained access to 2207's space and time
the direct route would take them through the extensive territory of the Bolar Federation
a race currently at war with the United Galman-Gamilas civilization
they're doggedly pursued by Dezarium Captain Ranbel and his invisible Battleship Grodez
who remotely controls a secondary body on board
As is par for the course with the Yamato remake
the extended space battles between Yamato and its enemies are extremely tense and exciting
especially when paired with ultra-colorful space scenery like twin white dwarf stars surrounded by a spiral of material from collapsed gas giants
or a massive star surrounded by a sea of ultra-dense liquid-like plasma
With tactics constantly changing and new environmental complications frequently arising
no two Yamato battles are ever quite the same
Yamato's enemies are usually intelligent and sneaky
though they sometimes let pride or vain superiority get the better of them
The Yamato is the eternally plucky underdog
with commanders able to turn the tide of even the most hopeless battles
with massive planet-destroying neon space lasers and missiles firing in all directions
nominal main protagonist Susumu Kodai barely appears in these four episodes
save for a few scenes of him glowering darkly
and one failed attempt to rescue his Iscandar-born niece
his love interest Yuki Mori takes a back seat
her only role is to consider assassinating Alphon while his mind is elsewhere… ultimately deciding not to murder a man who can't defend himself
That leaves us with the rest of the dizzyingly massive cast to carry the story
There's a major focus on short-tempered Domon and his tortured love-hate relationship with college friend Ageha
Am I the only one who finds Domon's “cute little flesh fang” distracting
We leave off with the promise of further political upheaval
as the Yamato heads towards Galman-Gamilas at the behest of everyone's favorite bad boy leader
and the Bolar Federation reaching a boiling point
it seems unlikely that the Yamato's journey to the galaxy's center is about to get any easier
What on Earth is going on with that older version of Sasha

Part of the reason I was asked to contribute to the Answerman column is because I am a salty
older anime industry exec type with lots of experiences and stories to share with you
“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate
like tears in the rain…” and if I don't hurry up and finish this column
and I also watched all of Star Blazers as a child on ABC's Afternoon Show with James Valentine
It was unlike anything else I'd seen before
Transformers was probably the most sophisticated animated series I'd seen up to that point with its simplistic
How many kid's series in the mid-80s started like this one
helped to steer me on my lifelong journey with the medium
It should come as no surprise that none other than Hideki Anno and his studio, Khara, have recently announced that he will be hopping aboard the good ship Yamato for a very special 50th-anniversary project
which I am guessing is either a brand new anime series or animated feature film
Hideaki Anno, a man famous for some of the most important anime creations of the past thirty years, has more or less been living his best life over the past decade, “re-imagining” some of his all-time favorite childhood programs as one-off theatrical projects starting with Shin Godzilla (2016), Shin Ultraman (2022), and finally Shin Kamen Rider (2023)
The entire Japanese pop-cultural sandbox has been gifted to Anno
a creator considered experienced and gifted enough to steward these precious brands
It is fitting that he is now putting his considerable talents to work on Yamato
Another interesting fact about Space Battleship Yamato is that the titular battleship is the very same Imperial Japanese Navy mega-cruiser
Navy sank towards the end of WW2 on April 7
The name Yamato has much more ancient origins than the vessel from which it took its name
is made up of characters that mean “great” and “harmony” and was historically the province in present-day Nara Prefecture
which many cite as the birthplace of the nation
The Yamato was the pride of the Imperial Navy and one of the largest
most heavily armed military vessels in the world at the time
It was the pinnacle of Japan's maritime strength and a symbol of Imperial might
The sinking of the Yamato became a metaphor for the end of the Japanese Empire and its diminishment in the immediate post-war reconstruction period
It is a mythical story about a heroic quest that unites disparate survivors in the post-apocalyptic ashes of a once-great society
It is a story of survival and re-emergence
The unearthing and rehabilitation of the sunken warship
raised from the dystopian desert sands of the barren Pacific Ocean bed
set off on one final redemptive mission for all people
SBY is an important moment in Japanese pop culture
It came at a time of renewed prosperity after 25 years of grueling toil and sacrifice by the Japanese people in the immediate Reconstruction period
It is an opportunity to reframe Japanese Imperial hubris as a moment of national and global unity
It is a culturally significant work that still resonates today
and that still feels incredibly fresh and exciting
Even Japan's newish and embattled Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, a self-proclaimed otaku who fondly builds military model kits in his spare time, has also disclosed his passion for one anime in particular: the 1978 sequel film Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato
which he admits to watching over a hundred times
One of Japan's forefathers of the space opera genre of anime, Space Battleship Yamato, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. Created by the late Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshinobu Nishizaki in 1974
the series follows the crew of the titular ship on its one-year voyage to the planet Iskandar to save Earth from the invading forces of the Gamilons
the series has spawned several animated film sequels
and the current remake series and captured the imaginations of thousands
Anno spoke a bit longer than Kosaka and Asagami
“It was an innovative animation that had a tremendous impact on people of my generation who watched it in real-time.” Anno further stated
“I think this work deserves to be passed down for another half century or more
I hope young people will continue to talk about it
but for the 100th anniversary and beyond.”
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, anime critic Ryusuke Hikawa asked Anno questions submitted by the press regarding the exhibition
When asked how Space Battleship Yamato influenced him
anime was called 'TV manga.' And [Yamato] changed the term to animation
It was also different from the children's TV manga at the time with its hard-hitting human drama and other aspects that I had never seen before.”
The two men then went on a fun little tangent about the connection between Space Battleship Yamato and Mobile Suit Gundam. Hikawa noted that gunpla, or Gundam plastic models
[if you feel that way] I think you should watch that rather than the original.”
The Space Battleship Yamato: The Complete Record Exhibition is largely split into two sections
The main exhibition is on the seventh floor of the Seibu Shibuya department store
and reproductions of the sketches and storyboards from the 1974 Space Battleship Yamato anime series
While the highlights are the original pieces
the section also features a large-scale model that shows the inner workings of the Yamato
The exhibition's second section is on the second floor of the department store
This section hosts many Space Battleship Yamato toys produced throughout its 50-year history
guests are treated to a timeline of when the Yamato TV series and films were released and a comprehensive display of the produced Space Battleship Yamato albums
The end of the section is dedicated to a lengthy synopsis of the remake series beginning with Space Battleship Yamato 2199
While we didn't have the chance to preview it
the Seibu Shibuya department store is hosting a Space Battleship Yamato collaboration café during the Exhibition period at the 365cafe on the fourth floor
Each order comes with a random Space Battleship Yamato: The Complete Record Exhibition coaster
Although not part of the Space Battleship Yamato: The Complete Record Exhibition proper
the Seibu Shibuya Department store also has a few separate Space Battleship Yamato displays throughout the store
The most noticeable are the displays at the store's entrance
if you check the stairs between the sixth and seventh floor
you will find a quaint painting of Space Battleship Yamato characters Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori on a Yamato observation platform looking out into space
The department store's fifth-floor skybridge also features a display of Space Battleship Yamato models for shoppers to enjoy as they walk between the main department store and the second Seibu Shibuya building
As noted above, the Space Battleship Yamato: The Complete Record Exhibition is taking place at the Seibu Shibuya department store between March 15-31. The Exhibit is open between 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the last entry at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through LAWSON Tickets and cost 2,500 yen for adults and 1,300 yen for children (about US$17.00 and 9.00 respectively) for advance tickets
Same-day tickets cost 2,700 and 1,500 yen (about US$18.00 and 10.00)
Fans can also purchase the 5,000 yen (about US$34.00) premium ticket
which comes with a Space Battleship Yamato acrylic stand

violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Orli Shaham on April 3
Roomful of Teeth on April 9 and the Branford Marsalis Quartet on May 1
whose hulls were laid down in November 1937 and April 1938
The Yamato was commissioned on December 16, 1941, just nine days after Pearl Harbor
These were Japan’s most prestigious ships, and they didn’t want to risk losing them. Considering the expense to build such massive battleships
such a strategy made little sense and might have cost Imperial Japan dearly

All eyes will be on Cal fifth year Isabelle Stadden
who comes in as the top seed in the women’s 200 back tonight

both set new team records at the Minnesota Invite yesterday

Isabelle Stadden and Olympian Keaton Jones
The 2024 Minnesota Invite continues this evening with finals of the 100 fly
December 06th, 2024 ACC, College
Cal freshman Mary-Ambre Moluh swam to become the 4th fastest freshman all-time in the women’s 100 backstroke as she clocked a 49.68 at the Minnesota Invite
That swim also makes her the 7th fastest performer all-time
Moluh arrived from France this fall at Cal and has already adjusted to the short course yards (SCY) format well
her time tonight already makes her the fastest international woman in the 100 backstroke
Also highlighting the night was Cal freshman Yamato Okadome who swam to a 50.87 in the men’s 100 breast
That makes him the #3 freshman performer all-time
Okadome’s time from tonight would have been 3rd at NCAAs, only behind Bell and Brian Benzing of Towson who swam a 50.59
Bell has since graduated as he just finished his 5th year meaning Okadome helps fill a big void at both the individual and relay level

Moluh breaking the Cal 100 back record prompted me to go look at their top 10 all time list and I was reminded of how unreal Natalie Coughlin was
School records (and some national records) in 7 individual events that almost all stood for over a decade
and it took legendary swimmers in their own right to break them – Missy Franklin (100 free)
Coach Durden knows what he has in such an amazing person and coach
I bet his 200 will be even better than his 100
Shocker: internationals coming in to save Cal because they can’t develop anyone other than 1.00 power index top 5 recruits
Gabe Jett just went 44.5 in the 100 back what was that about not being able to develop domestic recruits
Probably will bomb out at NCAAs like he did in 2024 lol
He finaled in all 3 of his events at NCAAs
He has added time at NCAAs each of the last 2 years
which is where I think is what he’s referring to
His 500 free SB from last year was at a dual meet
Claire Curzan was 49.46 as a freshman at the PAC-12 championships in 2023

An Instagram post from two months ago written by Cal freshman Yamato Okadome has become interesting in the wake of his headlining first performance as a collegiate athlete last weekend
In the team’s dual meet against UCSD
Okadome swam 1:52.85 in the 200 breaststroke
which ranks him 2nd in the NCAA this season
On August 9th, as he was preparing to start his academic and athletic career at Cal, Okadome wrote a lengthy post on his Instagram account in a photo posing with Cal associate head coach David Marsh
While most athletes explain their college choices with canned notions of ‘family’ and a pursuit of academic and athletic excellence
explaining his choice as a Japanese swimmer – a country that has robust domestic opportunities for elite swimmers to study and train and therefore has not historically sent many athletes to the NCAA
he says that he made the choice in part because Japanese competitive swimming “has been in a slump.” He pointed to results at last year’s World Championships
He also says he wants to progress the commercial opportunities for Japanese swimmers. In 2022, Yui Ohashi officially became Japan’s first-ever professional swimmer
Professional swimmers in Japan have relaxed restrictions on commercial opportunities
but in exchange become responsible for their own expenses related to training camps and team trips
Okadome has represented Japan internationally at the junior level on several occasions
including at the 2023 World Junior Swimming Championships
I would like to write a serious “style” of why I decided to go to UC Berkeley for various people through social media
but I would appreciate it if you would take this as just one person’s opinion and way of thinking
and I’m not sure if I’ve written it to meet your expectations
but I hope you will read it with that in mind
The reason I am going to the United States to go to UC Berkeley is to fundamentally strengthen the Japanese competitive swimming world and achieve my ultimate goal in my swimming career
which is to become the world’s best in the 400m medley relay
I believe that it is not enough to pursue my own results and become faster
but rather that the overall strengthening of the Japanese competitive swimming world is necessary more broadly
the Japanese competitive swimming world has been in a slump
as symbolized by the results of only one silver medal at last year’s World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka and the Paris Olympics
I believe that the cause is not superficial
such as the timing of the selection meeting or the organizational strength of the team for the match
I believe that one of the reasons for the current slump in competitive swimming is the inadequacy of university swimming programs in Japan
When the Japanese team participated in the Junior Pan Pacific two years ago
they were unable to beat the United States
but they showed enough strength to compete with Australia in terms of the number of medals won
when looking at the World Aquatics Championships and the Olympics
there is a big gap between overseas university students and athletes in their 20s
This is evidence that juniors are being strengthened
which means that improvements to programs at the university level are required
So I wanted to create an opportunity to fundamentally change this situation by studying abroad at an American university
there are no Japanese competitive swimmers studying abroad at American universities
and the reasons for this include a lack of English language skills
but I think the biggest reason is that there is no precedent
So I decided to go to UC Berkeley to lower the hurdle of going to a university abroad and create an environment where athletes of a younger generation than me have a wider range of new options than they have now
I want to change the current situation in Japan
where the commercialization of swimming is not progressing and there are few athletes who work professionally after graduating from university
I want to learn about the entertainment and business models of swimming that have been successful in the United States
and acquire the creativity and ability to apply something like ISL to Japan
where I can receive a high-level education in both swimming and business
There is a limit to what one person can do
but regardless of whether my ideas are correct or not
I hope that this will be shared with many people
and that it will be an opportunity to look at competitive swimming from a broader perspective and think about how to get out of this current situation and make it stronger
I don’t know if the training methods and environment at American universities suit Japanese people
or if they are really necessary to make Japanese people stronger
it will benefit many Japanese competitive swimmers
and although I don’t know if I will be able to participate as a member of the Japanese team at the World Aquatics Championships in a year or the Olympics in four years
I aim to compete against the world with a stronger team than I am now
and to make the competition more enjoyable for those who support me
I sincerely hope that competitive swimming will become a sport that involves more people
and that the swimming world in Japan and other countries will continue to develop
There are many excellent coaches and athletes in Japan
If we can create an environment where they can fully demonstrate their abilities
the world of competitive swimming will take a further leap forward
so I would like to use my experience at UC Berkeley to contribute to that goal
Thank you for reading this unnecessarily long article to the end
please send me a DM with any questions and I will answer them as best I can 😎 I am grateful for all the opportunities and will enjoy my university life 🤞🤞🤞
There have been historically very-few Japanese swimmers in the NCAA. Where there have been, they’ve usually been athletes with multiple citizenships, like the Ortiz brothers of the University of Michigan or the Litherland triplets at Georgia, though none chose to represent Japan internationally (Bruno Ortiz swam for Spain)
Among the more prominent examples are 2008 Japanese Olympian Saori Haruguchi
She wound up finishing 27th at the Olympics in the 400 IM

I think Chuck Katis had some big drops there as well

When Jo Sakai saw Boca Raton on Christmas Day 1903
he found his paradise and also founded a colony of Japanese farmers at a place called Yamato
Ending a period of isolation in the late 19th century
Japan began sending young men to study abroad to enhance its political
Sakai went to New York University and in 1903
became a member of the first graduating class of the School of Commerce
Sakai met with the governor of Florida and the head of Henry Flagler’s Model Land Company, promising new agricultural techniques and crops, according to the Morikami Museum's website

The first settlers were bachelors but soon came wives and children
the site hosted white settlers and Black sharecroppers from the Bahamas
The colony never had more than roughly 50 residents at a time though
It was situated where present-day Yamato Road meets Dixie Highway at a site originally known as Wyman

Sakai wanted to raise silkworms and brought Formosan tea and mulberry bushes
The rest of the newcomers planted “Japanese vegetables,” but they didn't sell
So the farmers switched to more local staples of pineapples
The colony had its own train station on the Florida East Coast tracks and its own post office
Youngsters attended a white school except for 1917-1922
But the enterprise fell victim to a fruit blight and competition from Cuba
Many residents took their money from land they bought during the boom times of the 1920s and left
Only two bachelors and two families remained as World War II approached
Morikami's fortune during the 1920s totaled almost $250,000
He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery along with other pioneers in West Palm Beach's historic resting place
Also in his grave is his 1-year-old son Hiroshi
The story of Morikami is still being told today
Morikami donated his land in the 1970s to Palm Beach County for a park to preserve the memory of the Yamato Colony

Image of Iowa-class battleships firing her 16-inch guns
The sheer size of these guns was imposing
and the range and explosive power of the round were capable of exacting a severe toll upon enemy targets
While it is accurate to think of these weapons in terms of anti-aircraft and land attack
the shells also integrated armor-piercing technology for use against enemy surface ships
The size and volume of the large warships brought distinct “area-fire” advantages
something of particular value before the arrival of precision-guided shells
A ship the size of the Yamato was known to offer a larger and more “findable” target for enemy submarines
The reason seems clear: in any maritime warfare scenario where a large battleship was supported by superior air-power and faced a smaller or manageable surface or submarine threat
the benefits of the ship arguably prove unmatched and outweigh its vulnerabilities
