Home » Three ROK Navy vessels visit JMSDF Yokosuka Naval Base
Japan’s Defense Minister Gen Nakatani attended a welcoming ceremony for the arrival of the three South Korean vessels and boarded the Marado
According to the Ministry of Defense in Tokyo
this is the first time that a Japanese defense minister has boarded a South Korean warship in history
which is considered a move that symbolizes the improvement in the bilateral relations
This was also the first time a South Korean warship has entered a Japanese port in two years since its supply ship ROKS Soyang (AOE-51) participated in the International Fleet Review held in November 2022 in Sagami Bay
it also became the first time a South Korean Navy vessel solely has entered a Japanese port in six years since 2018
The latest port call came just one day after the three South Korean vessels conducted a goodwill exercise with the JMSDF training ship JS Hatakaze (DDG-171/TV-3520) off the coast of the Kii Peninsula
Since an incident in December 2018 when a ROKN destroyer pointed its fire control radar at a JMSDF patrol aircraft
Japan-South Korea defense cooperation had gotten extremely worse until recently
But since South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol took office two years ago
the two countries’ defense chiefs agreed on measures to prevent a similar incident
nowadays work closely together to respond to any ballistic missile launches by North Korea
ROKS Marado is the second of the Dokdo-class landing ships
It has a standard displacement of 14,800 tons
The ship has a crew complement of 330 sailors and is capable of carrying 720 marines
and 7 to 12 helicopters such as the MUH-1s and MAH helicopters
It is armed with 4 KVLS cells that launch a total of 16 K-SAAM (surface-to-air missiles) Sea Bow
and 2 Phalanx Block 1Bs close-in weapon systems (CIWS)
It has a full-length flight deck that can take off and land multiple helicopters
and the well dock at the stern can accommodate two air cushion craft
ROKS Cheonjabong is the second of the Cheonanbong-class LST
with a standard displacement of 4,950 tons
It has a maximum speed of 23 knots and can carry about 120 crew members
It is armed with one twin 40mm machine gun and has a helicopter deck but no hangar
ROKS Daecheong is the second of the Cheonji-class fast combat support ship
with a standard displacement of 4,200 tons
It is armed with one twin 40mm machine gun and two 20mm machine guns

Japan — A series of power outages has plagued the home of the U.S
with some sailors and families going without electricity for more than 24 hours
according to a series of posts on Yokosuka’s official Facebook page
The outages are caused by defective electrical distribution lines that run parallel to steam lines on base
along with age and other environmental conditions
has led to “advanced degradation” of the electrical lines
Base authorities have been aware of the problem¸ which causes “unpredictable disruptions” in power
“Our Public Works Team has ensured that procedures are in place and materials are on hand to restore power as quickly as possible when disruptions occur,” that post said
it can put additional stress on surrounding and connected lines
“The recent cluster of connected outages occurred as the fluctuating power from the outage and repair efforts strained aging neighboring power lines.”
The base is planning to initiate another blackout on Thursday for about eight hours to assist with repairs
The most recent outage began around 1:40 p.m
Monday and continued until around 6:10 p.m
according to a Tuesday evening update to Yokosuka’s Facebook page
a Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command building and another base facility were without power Tuesday afternoon
With temperatures averaging around 42 degrees Fahrenheit over the past week
families struggled to stay warm or find alternative lodging
according to several base residents who spoke to Stars and Stripes
the spouse of an active-duty service member
said she’s struggled to adapt to the blackouts because her 10-month-old child recently weaned off breastfeeding
“We are solely relying on formula right now because we don’t have electricity to thaw and warm our baby’s bottles even with the breast milk in the freezer,” she said by email Tuesday
The base notified affected families that temporary lodging was available
but the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites and the Navy Lodge had no availability as of 3 p.m
but most hotels in the area don’t allow pets
finding temporary lodging is not an easy task off base
so we have had to stay in our house each time,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Kristie Pierre
a logistics specialist for the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge
Pierre said her family has been without power for more than 30 hours over a span of five days for “no less than nine hours each time,” she told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday via Messenger

Japan — Hundreds of sailors stood in dress blues as the aircraft carrier USS George Washington pulled into Tokyo Bay on Friday morning for the first time in nearly a decade
Scores of onlookers were joined by mascots and vendors while the U.S
high school cheerleaders and traditional Japanese musicians welcomed the ship’s return to the place it called home from 2008 to 2015
While many of the carrier’s approximately 3,000 sailors are new to Japan
served aboard the George Washington during its previous deployment to Japan
Many of the returning sailors specifically requested the assignment
“I think that serves as a testament to the people and the culture of Japan
as well as the strong relationship between our two nations,” he said
Among the new arrivals was 10-year-old William Prentiss
a supply officer aboard the George Washington
I haven’t seen him in six months,” he told Stars and Stripes ahead of the ship’s arrival
were waiting to welcome Chief Warrant Officer 2 Robert Murillo
“We’re grateful to have my husband home,” she said pierside
The George Washington left Yokosuka in 2015 for a midlife nuclear refueling and maintenance period at Newport News
The process was significantly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other setbacks
took its place as the centerpiece of the 7th Fleet’s carrier strike group until it left Yokosuka on May 16 for its own scheduled maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton
the two ships swapped nearly two-thirds of their respective 3,000 crew members
only about 350 sailors from the Ronald Reagan
moved to the George Washington before it departed for Japan
as well as a ship the length of Tokyo Tower — 1,092 feet — is “no small feat,” said U.S
Embassy to Japan deputy chief of mission Katherine Monahan
“[The ship’s] arrival here today clearly illustrates America’s steadfast commitment to the U.S.-Japan alliance and our collective security and deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region,” she said at the news conference
The George Washington arrived less than a week after its aviation component
returned to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southwestern Japan
which departed with the USS Ronald Reagan in May
returned with several changes to its roster
replaced Strike Fighter Squadron 115’s F/A-18E Super Hornets
While other F-35 models are prominent in Japan
Christopher Case told Stars and Stripes on Nov
The newer aircraft are an example of how the U.S
is ensuring peace and prosperity in the region
“China knows what this USS George Washington can do today
because these are superior aircraft than they were nine years ago,” he told reporters Friday
“America’s deterrence and credibility are seen
a logistics specialist aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Milius
was sentenced to two years and four months of prison with hard labor
suspended for four years by the Yokohama District Court Yokosuka Branch
Krieger hasn’t decided whether he will appeal the sentence
lead defense attorney Takashi Takano told Stars and Stripes after the sentencing
“I think the decision was wrong,” Takano told reporters after the hearing
with multiple sprained vertebrae and a woman
broken nasal bone and other facial injuries
but disappointed by the suspended sentence
“I hope he recognizes his crime after this decision
because he hasn’t apologized or shown any remorse,” she told reporters after the sentencing
the three-judge panel led by Judge Yasushi Katada said they noted the two most injured parties required two months of medical treatment or recovery
and the remaining two required between one and two weeks
Prosecutors ultimately indicted Krieger on four counts of causing bodily injury
testified April 25 that the sailor had consumed at least 11 alcoholic beverages over the course of several hours that day
The judges said Krieger’s health and intoxication played a part in the case
but they didn’t believe it excused his actions or absolved him of responsibility
during which Krieger kicked one of the injured parties
constituted “dangerous brutality,” according to the summary
They also described it as “indiscriminate violence committed in public against people who were not at fault.”
Katada in the summary said the judges felt Krieger was unable to control himself because he was drunk and his actions were a way to “relieve his stress” about the overall situation and his ongoing health issues
The judges found Krieger intentionally injured the 33-year-old man and a second man
and by negligence injured the other two people
Krieger testified that he consumed between 10 and 20 drinks that day and remembers very little of the incident
with the injured parties asking for about $153,000

Specifics behind the decision are rarely disclosed due in part to federal privacy laws
Dan Lannamann will temporarily assume command of the facility
will serve as executive officer until permanent replacements are found

TOKYO: A demonstration was held in Yokosuka on Friday against the American nuclear aircraft carrier “George Washington,” which was officially deployed to the 7th Fleet in August
The George Washington returned to the US Navy base in Yokosuka on Friday after participating in the large-scale Japan-US-ROK joint exercise “Freedom Edge” and other regional defense exercises
The demonstrators claimed: “The US-Japan rulers are trying to invade China again
Japan is the ‘key’ to this and Yokosuka is the ‘key of the key.’ The power to stop this invasion lies in the anti-war and anti-base struggle in Yokosuka
Let’s rise up to fight against war and nuclear war from the workplace!”
The demonstrators claim the purpose of the military exercises involving the 7th Fleet is to invade China
They say the US and its allies are preparing for the outbreak of war in 2027
They shouted slogans such as: “Make Yokosuka the key to stop the invasion of China”; “Let’s dispute the Japan-US security system”; and “Remove the base”
Japan was used as a military and logistics base for the US military during the Korean and Vietnam wars
Yokosuka has been the home port of the US 7th Fleet
The US 7th Fleet consists of over 50 ships
ambassador to Japan appeared at Yokosuka Primary School on Wednesday to mark the first day of the Department of Defense Education Activity’s new universal prekindergarten program
once known as a hard-charging chief of staff for President Barack Obama
bumped fists and even sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It” alongside kids from the base’s first pre-K class
available for children who turned 4 on or before Sept
is now available at 80 DODEA schools with additional programs planned for 10 more schools
“I’m just really proud of the armed services for committing the resources,” Emanuel told Stars and Stripes from one of the new classrooms
“I don’t want to get into all the research
but it’s pretty overwhelming about how important this is for a child’s success in life
Emanuel said his excitement over the program was both personal and professional
As a student at Sarah Lawrence College in New York
Emanuel initially studied to be an early childhood educator before pursuing politics
he championed the rollout of the city’s first universal prekindergarten and kindergarten programs
he also oversaw one of the largest public-school closures in U.S
according to the Chicago Tribune in May 2019
He said at the time that closing financially struggling schools would result in students attending better performing schools
something she said DODEA has been working towards for more than a decade
She recalled families requesting the program 12 years ago
when she served as superintendent for the Pacific East district
The program has a $75 million budget for fiscal year 2024
which includes about $8.8 million in construction
with a goal of an 18-to-1 student-teacher ratio
DODEA Europe spokeswoman Jessica Tackaberry told Stars and Stripes in April
space was created by moving fifth grade students from Sullivans Elementary School to Yokosuka Middle School
That made room for pre-K through first grade at Yokosuka Primary School
Rapp told Stars and Stripes in one of the new classrooms Wednesday
DODEA may eventually create a separate facility for Yokosuka Primary School
but for now it will remain a “school within a school,” according to principal Mary Fisk
“We’re just really excited to offer this to our families
and we’re looking forward to a great year,” Fisk told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday
“Yokosuka Primary School is where the magic begins.”

for 540 yen and gyoza dumplings for 270 yen
Chahan is one of my favorite Chinese dishes
as it is hearty and a good dish to have after a couple alcoholic beverages
This typical dish is rice fried with vegetables
If you’ve ever been to a Chinese restaurant
you’ve probably tried a variation on this standard dish
and Nangokutei’s is not one you’ll want to miss
The chefs behind the counter cook up the chahan fresh and quickly
I enjoyed my meal with a complimentary side of egg soup included
Nangokutei’s chahan is not too seasoned like others
sophisticated soy sauce-based flavor with a nice crispy aroma of fried onion and sesame oil
beaten egg and roast pork kept me eating until the last bite
The gyoza were the perfect mix of crisp on the outside but juicy on the inside and went perfectly with my chahan
Try it yourself and you will see what I mean
budget-friendly menu has many great options like fried chicken
The restaurant also offers “all-you-can-eat” courses starting from 1,999 yen
The restaurant is a five-minute walk from Yokosuka NB
but you’ll find other branches around Japan

Can you name another country in the world that is reliant on another one for its security
Trump returns into Yokosuka base after peace keeping mission
Americans will owe a lot to him once they realize he is helping to scrape the oligarchical barnicles from the backs of Americans
I honestly never realised that this board was populated by so many conservative Americans
The comments here have been extremely enlightening
If those that have posted the more questionable comments here are actually serious
i think it’s naive to think japan doesn’t have nuclear weapons parts lying in close formation
Japan and the Asian continent as a whole do not need the warmongering attitude which comes with the United States of America
What is happening in Eastern Europe and the Middle East cannot be repeated
political manipulation and warmongering is freedom????.
The concept of freedom for the US is so ridiculous and far away from reality.
Freedom doesn't come out a foreign rifled gun barrel
https://media1.tenor.com/m/EvNCyjP1IxQAAAAd/feliz-alegre.gif
It does when there are disgusting adversaries trying to wipe you off the map and the foreign guns are the only thing stopping them
Maybe don't goosestep around and emulate the people you fought back then
Not wanting to expend ammunition is not running away
Yes the people that indiscriminately fire on ships passing by
Checks out that that would be a russian ally
Do you have some proof that they are not doing well
Just because you are angry at Kosovo doesn't mean they are dying in the streets
Will help them in their war with other tribes people I guess
And arming the Mujaheddin brought down the Soviet Union
Maybe disgusting russia should stay out of it then and let it settle down
While Assad is busy figuring out how to murder his way to security
They don't need China bullying is what they don't need
For Japanese: They were literally atomic bombed and the perpetrator is still wandering on their soil like a champion and get away with anything
contemporary Japanese are in love with anything American
That is kind of definition of Stockholm syndrome
Japan can end the mutual defense treaty with the US at any time
And US forces in Japan are subject to Japanese law
They realized US imperialism was more barbaric then Taliban
Letting women go to college is more barbaric than the Taliban
That is an interesting opinion from the guy at 3:01
You see them at conservative rallies....carried by racist liberals
Things don’t get more ridiculous than the above off-topic comment
I guess the so-called “liberal elites” have scraggly beards (with not so much on top)
it’s a moot point as your comment and mine will be deleted within the hour

sailor accused of slamming into and injuring five people near a popular beach two years ago was suffering from delirium and not in control of his actions
Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniel Krieger was suffering from acute alcohol intoxication
higher brain dysfunction and delirium when he collided with the group July 9
director of Rokubancho Mental Clinic in Tokyo and a part-time lecturer on neuropsychiatry at Keio University
According to the World Health Organization
“acute alcohol intoxication” requires dysfunctional behavior and at least one of seven additional symptoms
The definition is “just a guideline” and does not encapsulate the “essence of the symptoms,” he testified
Krieger’s condition resulted from his excess consumption of alcohol and a prior brain injury
a defense witness at Krieger’s trial in the Yokosuka Branch of Yokohama District Court
Krieger testified May 13 that he drank 10-20 alcoholic drinks the day of the incident
Muramatsu concluded it was impossible for Krieger to control his behavior “because he was under a significantly altered state of consciousness,” he testified
Prosecutors pored over Muramatsu’s 44-page report
questioning whether Krieger could have lied during Muramatsu’s interviews
and whether Muramatsu would reach a different conclusion had he reviewed video footage of Krieger’s police interview
Muramatsu testified that he didn’t believe Krieger had lied to him
and that his conclusion was based on the facts of the case and clinical symptoms
Krieger is charged with four counts of bodily injury from the July 2022 incident
Prosecutors allege he slammed into the group on the streets of Zushi
a popular beach town near Yokosuka Naval Base
the most severely injured a 33-year-old man with multiple sprained vertebrae and a 58-year-old woman with a broken upper jaw
21 recommended charging Krieger with the bodily injury on all five people
decide formal charges under Japan’s criminal justice system
a logistics specialist assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Milius
and his attorneys do not deny the allegations but say a previous brain injury and his heavy intoxication that day should absolve him of criminal liability
Krieger suffered a brain hemorrhage after intervening in a fight at a train station in Yokosuka
he became increasingly irritable and forgetful
and a final hearing is tentatively scheduled Sept
Navy harbor security boats raced through waters near the home of the U.S
7th Fleet and fired hundreds of blank rounds Wednesday
part of a three-day exercise that drew protests earlier in the week
Short bursts of gunfire were heard throughout the day as the two boats chased each other through Truman Bay
a restricted waterway connected to Tokyo Bay that serves as the base’s main harbor
Similar shots could also be heard Tuesday near the same area
conducted by sailors with the base’s security division
according to the base’s official Facebook page
All gunfire used “blank simulation rounds,” and safety measures were in place to protect the community and any civilian vessels nearby
Base spokesman Justin Keller declined to provide any information on the exercise
including whether the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force or other Navy vessels participated or what scenario was being drilled
we do not discuss specific exercise scenarios,” he told Stars and Stripes by email Wednesday
About two dozen people protested Sunday outside Yokosuka’s main gate
by former Japanese House of Representatives member Kimie Hatano
Yokosuka City Council leader Yoko Omura and Nobuaki Hayashi
the Japanese Communist Party district chairman
“Yokosuka Port is a ‘sea for everyone’ where peaceful activities can take place,” Hatano
we should ensure safety by removing the base.”
