Yamasaki Ku Hong Associates Design Lab has been awarded first prize for the invited design competition for a new landmark shopping center in Buyeo
Additional images of the project and the architects process can be viewed after the jump
The Client Lotte’s design competition objective is to find a design that satisfies the three missions: New Landmark for Buyeo, the old capital of Korea; Fun Place, Lotte’s corporate direction for new shopping malls; Eco Design.
Courtesy Yamasaki.Ku.Hong AssociatesBecause the project site sits next to the old palace of Bakje, one of the three dynasties settled in Korean Peninsula 2000 years ago, we were trying to find a solution for ‘Old’ and ‘New’ to coexist; ‘Landscape’ as ‘Architecture’ was the theme for this project.
A linear band of shops are connected to form a ring-like structure that are deformed to fit into the eastern part of the site; thus created are three distinctive inner court-yards.
Courtesy Yamasaki.Ku.Hong AssociatesThe outer walls of the band are stone-clad so that it resembles the old castle walls and the roof of the shopping block is a ‘grand’ plaza park that provides visitors a new resting area.
The notion of ‘Landscape’ as a new form of ‘Architecture’ allows us to focus inner courts to be expressed as a ‘modern’ creature that has a life of its own; this duality satisfies a problem of mixing old and new – the roof garden and the exterior stone walls are to act as an old castle’s remnants.
SiteThree court yards have different characteristics not only in the size and proportion but also in functional usage – to reflect different shopping categories and events; this design is based on the notion that shopping is no longer a mere process of ‘buying’ and ‘selling’ but an ‘entertainment’ and ‘cultural experience’.

National Ancient Buddhist statue found in Buyeo
A gilt-bronze Buddhist statue believed to date back to the mid-6th century has been discovered in the ancient tourist city of Buyeo
Buyeo was the capital of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-660 A.D.)
which governed the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula for centuries until it was conquered by the neighboring Silla in 660
The Bodhisttva statue was found in the northern section of the remains of the Baekje-era fortress wall designed as the country's national historic site No
according to the Baekje Culture Foundation
with its head and a circular decoration in the back symbolizing the light coming out from the body of Buddha missing
The remaining statue is 6.3 centimeters high and 2.4 cm wide
It features Baekje's unique artistic style
with influence from China's southern dynasties in the mid-6th century
"This gilt-bronze Bodhisattva statue is a very rare one," a Buyeo County government official said
"We'll set up plans for a thorough excavation into the adjacent area after consultations with experts." (Yonhap)

The Baekje kingdom was one of the earliest states on the Korean Peninsula (18 BEC to 660 CE), and UNESCO’s Baekje Historic Areas offer a unique testimony of its history
the kingdom was at the crossroads of exchanges of art and Buddhist culture along the Silk Road with other kingdoms in Korea
tombs and many other archaeological sites dating to 475-660 CE testify to the Baekje kingdom’s creative adoption of Chinese principles of construction
Today, about 440,000 people now live in Iksan, Gongju and Buyeo, three cities that were once capitals of the Baekje Kingdom. As time passed, Iksan turned toward industry, while Gongju and Buyeo focused on tourism. Despite having been inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2015
both Gongju and Buyeo have suffered steady population loss and the number of tourist visits has been stagnant
with most of them not staying more than a day
the project aims to link online and offline services that encourage visitors to stay longer in Gongju and Buyeo and contribute thereby help revitalise their local economies
visitors can find information on heritage sites and tourism facilities such as public bike rentals
the governments of Gongju and Buyeo invited local residents to express their preferences based on their daily lives
communication with residents became a huge hurdle
a “Living Lab” consisting of 18 local volunteers was held four times during the summer and fall of 2021
Springboarding off their ideas and feedback
three smart phone applications were developed to provide stories about heritage sites
Living Lab participants continuously participated in testing these new services until spring 2022
Both residents and officials have found the experience a positive one:
“I wanted to see my city becoming more friendly and convenient where travelers can stay longer
I tested the riding service using new public electronic bicycles for myself
I felt rewarded when my opinion was reflected in the actual services.” (Jinhee Park
Gongju resident and Living Lab participant)
“It was a good opportunity to test new services and find problems in advance
as local people know the situation here better than anyone else
We plan to continuously listen to and accommodate opinions from them to make a Smart Town.” (Jaemin Jo
It will utilise augmented reality technology to enable visitors and local people to meet and exchange information and services
the local government have been listening to the residents’ ideas
as they will become one of main players in the virtual forum
Increasing participation of local residents in the decision-making process for World Heritage Sites is a growing trend. Korea’s Special Act on Preservation, Management and Use of World Heritage
requires cities to actively explore how to increase local residents’ involvement in the protection and promotion of their cultural heritage
the Cultural Heritage Administration introduced a comprehensive plan that is expected to be completed by the end of this year
and has mandated that local governments each establish plans consistent with its implementation
IT education specifically tailored to elders should be offered in parallel
so that they can have an opportunity to join the conversation on heritage tourism
Without the participation of all South Koreans
the promotion of World Heritage can be only a partial success

Sophisticated Baekje culture a candidate for recognition by UNESCO
The Korea Herald is publishing “Korea’s Cultural Pride,” a 10-part series on the country’s cultural and natural heritage
A total of nine tangible and 14 intangible examples of heritage have been designated UNESCO World Heritage for international preservation
This year 15 cultural properties are on the tentative list
This installment explores the Baekje historic sites in the central part of the Korean Peninsula
People from the kingdom traveled as far as India and China for economic and cultural exchanges
blending these influences into a unique culture of their own
The Baekje culture was perhaps the most sophisticated among the three kingdoms of the time ― Silla and Goguryeo being the other two
This is evidenced by the fact that Baekje workers built the nine-story wooden stupa of the Hwangryongsa Temple in Silla
while painter Ajwataeja drew a portrait of Prince Shotoku
who is considered the ancestor of the current Japanese royal family
Buddhism and other cultures also spread to the archipelago
The Japanese royal family in 2001 announced that their ancestry is rooted in Baekje
or the Korean cultural fever,” said Lee Dong-ju
managing director of Buyeo Cultural Heritage Center
are now on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List
which are considered elements for an ancient capital
the cities are qualified to be appreciated by the world
“Gongju and Buyeo are a vivid testimony to the active exchanges and trade during ancient times among China
There are a number of historic places and properties that share similar architectural characteristics with China and Japan,” UNESCO said
“The Iksan Historic Site proves how unique and refined the Baekje people from the seventh century and their culture were
Many of the sites are all mentioned or alluded to in historical or oral narratives
The entire site is designated as a National Historic Site and benefits from legal protection to maintain its original state,” it noted
“King Muryeong paved the way for Baekje to prosper
When Baekje had to relocate the country’s capital to the Gongju area from near the Han River
he reinforced the royal prerogative and weakened other people’s voices
He also sought diplomatic relations with China
his son King Seong and his offspring were able to see the country prosper,” said Lee Sang-mi
a style in vogue in China in the 6th century
suggesting Chinese builders contributed to the construction
Inside the tomb were more than 1,500 relics including the golden crown
ornaments and others showing the rich Baekje culture
“The coffin of the king was made with Japanese gold pine tree
which suggests that the creation of Muryeongwangneung
but holds the very essence of Baekje culture,” Lee Dong-ju said
The most significant part of the discovery was the fact that the tomb had a stone signboard describing the owner of the tomb
“The oldest remaining history books about Baekje is Samguksagi
centuries after the countries have disappeared
there had been doubts about the accuracy of the book
we have managed to understand that the book contained the exact dateline and other information about King Muryeong
which enhanced the credibility of the book and all historic information stemmed from it,” said Lee Sang-mi
Another remarkable heritage item is the Jeongrimsaji Seoktap (stone pagoda)
“Much of Baekje heritage was destroyed because many of them were made with wood
The stone pagoda is one of a handful of masonry heritage pieces left in the era,” the scholar said
The tip of the rooftop tiles is lifted upward ever so slightly
attesting to the articulation of the kingdom
Wanggung-ni is the home of a romantic story
daughter of King Jinpyeong (579-632) of Silla
He spread a rumor that the princess came out to see him every day
The enraged father sent his daughter into exile but Seodong captured her as she was on her way and wooed her
Seodong later became King Mu (600-641) of Baekje and the couple established the old palace site in Wanggung-ni
built Mireuksa Temple to honor her religious beliefs
The stone pagoda in the temple is believed to have been erected in 693 in a prayer for peace in Baekje
an urn said to contain a bone of Buddha was found in it

July 18 (Yonhap) -- A royal tomb in the southwestern provincial city of Iksan is highly likely to be that of King Mu
who ruled the ancient Baekje Kingdom in early 7th century
researchers said Wednesday after uncovering the tomb after a century
The tomb had long been known to be that of the 30th king of the Baekje Kingdom
one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea along with Koguryo and Silla
Baekje used to rule the midwestern region of Korea from 18 B.C
But a controversy erupted in 2016 over the owner of the tomb when Jeonju National Museum announced that its analysis of a tooth from the tomb found that the tooth belonged to a woman aged 20-40
Also among the remains from the tomb was Silla earthenware
This photo provided by the Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage shows a box of a human bones from a royal tomb in Iksan
The debate prompted the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) to dig into the tomb in August 2017 in cooperation with the Iksan city government and a local university research institute for the first time since an excavation by the colonial Japan in 1917 to determine whose tomb it is
teams from the organizations announced in April that they found a box of human bones inside a burial chamber
"We analyzed the human bone from the royal tomb in various methods and found that they belong to a man around the age bracket of 60 years," the Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage that conducted the analysis on behalf of the CHA
"He is believed to be 161-170.1 centimeters tall and the year of death is estimated at 620 to 659."
This photo provided by the Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage shows a box of human bones found in a royal tomb in Iksan
The institute said the Japanese colonial government appears to have removed not a single piece of the bone from the tomb after excavating it
"There were 102 pieces of human bone in the box and chances are high that they are from one body because none of them overlap."
There is no historical record showing when King Mu was born
But the institute said chances are high the tomb belongs to the king seen from the facts that he was in throne for 41 years from 600 and he is the only Baekje king who possibly died in the 620-659 period
The experts said they will conduct more research in the future to determine exactly who was buried in the tomb
leisure By Yun Suh-young BUYEO ― The government’s four-river restoration project is nearing its end and the results are slowly being unveiled
Reservoirs built on the four rivers ― the Han
and Nakdong ― have been completed and regions near them are being developed to serve the community and boost tourism and leisure activities
which is called the Baekma as it enters the Buyeo region
has three reservoirs one of which this reporter visited
is located in the middle of Baekma River which runs through Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province
has a purification system that facilitates the circulation of stagnant water and manages water levels with a movable weir
The reservoir was designed in the form of a horse saddle to symbolize Admiral Gyebaek’s return to the river to protect it
Gyebaek was a warrior of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-660 A.D.) who fought bravely against the rival Silla Kingdom and defeated it in four battles
The Baekje-bo has a bicycle road beneath the saddle structure which runs across the river
bicycle roads are built around the four major rivers to attract local residents and sports-goers to the region
Riding along the bicycle road and feeling the wind is a refreshing experience
The bicycle road extends about 25 kilometers to get to Gongju-bo
the second reservoir built on the Baekma ― Sejong-bo is the third
Baekma River also offers other sports activities such as kayaking and motor boat rides
Those wanting to kayak can paddle their boat along a 21-kilometer route to Ganggyeong town
Attractions near Baekma River When visiting the river
a wooden boat that has its sail painted with red clay
one of the most famous tourist sites in Buyeo
The name Nakhwa means “flowers fall” which came from the tale of court ladies throwing themselves into the river rather than be captured by Silla warriors when they defeated Baekje. On top of the rock is a small pavilion
where visitors can get a beautiful view over the river
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes on foot to get to the pavilion from the dock
A few minutes from the dock is Goransa or Goran Temple
which is situated next to a mineral spring that allegedly makes a person who drinks from it three years younger
An old tale has it that an old lady who wanted to conceive a baby eventually got to raise a baby
turned out to be her husband who drank the water so many times that he turned into a baby
but there are some who say they feel their skin is rejuvenated after drinking the water
Across the river On the other side of Baekma River
is a Baekje Culture Land which is a traditional village reenacting Baekje culture
you may find a reproduction of a royal palace
Next to it is a Life and Culture Village which reenacts the lifestyles of the Baekje Kingdom
Taking a walk along Dulegil or Dule walkway may be good for those who want to enjoy nature around the traditional village
Those wanting to enjoy their visit to Buyeo for more than a day can stay at Lotte Buyeo Resort located next to the culture land
built to harmonize modernity and tradition
Other than Buyeo If you have enough time
The region also has the Geum River flowing through it _ from the new administrative city of Sejong to Gongju City and into Buyeo County before reaching the ocean
The temple is known to be home to some of the most beautiful scenery in Korea
and is good for meditation.Recommended Contents For YouTaboola 후원링크
