Daejeon Hana Citizen continued its lead by winning three consecutive league games
Daejeon beat FC Anyang 2-1 in the 11th round of the K League 1 of the 2025 season at Daejeon World Cup Stadium on May 3
Daejeon led with the first goal of 17-year-old Kim Hyun-oh
who made his "surprise debut" in the 36th minute of the first half
Daejeon sealed the match with Bob Shin's additional goal in the 34th minute of the second half
Daejeon gave Anyang Chae Hyun-woo a chase goal in the extra time of the second half
but he did not lose his concentration and succeeded in adding three points
This is the story of Daejeon manager Hwang Sun-hong with reporters after the match against Anyang
Two home wins in a row and three league wins in a row
I'm so happy to win back-to-back games at home
It is thanks to many fans who love Daejeon
It is the third consecutive league victory
I heard that our longest winning streak is 3 consecutive wins
I will prepare well to win four consecutive games
17-year-old Kim Hyun-oh scored his debut goal
We must continue to move on calmly without getting excited
I didn't show everything I had in today's game
We need to grow more technically and mentally
Two consecutive winning goals were scored from corner kicks
The coaching staff seems to have paid a lot of attention to corner kicks
It is changing depending on the opponent's defense and the goalkeeper's situation
I think I prepared from the Korea Cup that I played in Gangneung
more goals will come out." The goal came from a corner kick for the second consecutive game
Coaches in charge of set pieces are making great efforts
I played with all the teams in K League 1 once
there was something lacking in the tactical area
I will work hard to make use of the players' strengths more
It's really not easy to compete and fight in front of you
There is also a striker called Gutec on our team
Resident-gyu and Gutech must coexist well with each other
Do you feel that public opinion has changed
All the K-League 1 and 226 coaches will be similar
It's this world that you can't be welcomed just because you win
It's a part that I have to overcome until the day I finish my coaching career
I will try harder to repay the fans' support
He has to go on an expedition to Jeonbuk Hyundai on May 6
The rotation width has already been calculated
I will check the physical condition of the injured players
I will communicate well with the physical part and play a good game

Even though Hanwha Eagles tied for first place
"Daejeon Jesus" Ryan Weiss was not satisfied
defeated manager Park Jin-man's Samsung Lions 3-1 in the home game of the 2025 professional baseball KBO League at Hanwha Life Ball Park in Daejeon on the 5th
recorded 22-13 and tied for first place with the LG Twins (22-13)
who lost 2-5 to the Doosan Bears on the same day
It is the first time in 18 years that Hanwha has ranked first in more than 30 games since the match against Daejeon Samsung on June 2
Starting pitcher Weiss's good pitching was a brilliant game
He pitched powerfully all the time and tied Samsung's batters tightly
After one out in the top of the sixth inning
Lee Sung-kyu was hit by a 115-meter-distance solo shot to the left
but there was no major crisis other than that
Weiss threw a total of 107 balls in the game
and the maximum speed of fastballs was measured up to 157 kilometers
After coming down the mound with his team leading 2-1
he also enjoyed the joy of harvesting five wins (one loss) of the season as Hanwha won without allowing a tie
head coach Kim Kyung-moon gave a thumbs-up
"Wice played his role perfectly as a starting pitcher for seven innings."
"There have been many tight games recently
so I tried to keep focusing and give as little points as possible
but I'm happy that the results came out well," adding
"I remember not being good against Samsung last year
so I tried to take the ball count to my advantage
I'm trying to concentrate more," he said with a bright smile
It rained steadily at the ballpark on this day
But Weiss did not falter and led Hanwha to victory
whether it's a sunny day or a rainy day," he said
I don't want to lose this atmosphere," he nodded
Although it was a little sluggish after the opening
it won eight consecutive games in mid-April
we're playing more winning baseball this year than we did last year
and I'm playing baseball in a really good environment
I think I've improved a lot compared to last year
I have confidence that all players can continue to win," he said with a twinkle in his eyes
"There have been two consecutive losses since the eight-game winning streak
but they have won consecutive games without getting longer
we have confidence that we can definitely win the next game," he added
I'm not satisfied with the joint first place either
"I didn't know we were tied for first place
Fielders have their own roles as fielders and pitchers as pitchers
I think I can continue to show good performances
He won the first Children's Day game at the new stadium and won seven consecutive games
which has been mired in a three-game losing streak
Hanwha set up the starting list with Choi In-ho (designated hitter)
Samsung built the lineup with Lee Jae-hyun (striker)
It was Hanwha's job to gain the upper hand
After two outs in the bottom of the first inning
Moon Hyun-bin drew a 105-meter-long solo arch to the left
Moon is able to dispel the regret of an absurd checker who suffered in the top of the fourth inning against the Gwangju KIA Tigers on Sunday
he got on base with a hit ball after one out
but was checked by KIA catcher Kim Tae-gun and missed the game due to the replacement of the reprimand
widened the score gap in the bottom of the third inning
Floral hit a left-center hit and stole second base
Moon Hyun-bin then stepped down with a straight hit to the second baseman
but Noh Si-hwan hit a timely hit during an RBI
Samsung continued to aim for a counterattack
but the lineup was tied up by the opponent's starter Weiss and did not show any significant appearance
scored its first goal in the top of the sixth inning
Lee Sung-kyu fired a 115-meter solo shot (season No
Chae Eun-sung hit a timely RBI left-handed hit with one out and runners on the first and second bases
which led to Moon Hyun-bin's left-center hit and Noh Si-hwan's heavy hit
did its best to score a comeback point in the top of the ninth inning
That's how Hanwha won seven consecutive games
Hanwha starter Weiss threw 107 pitches and allowed three hits
and one run in seven innings to earn five wins (one loss) of the season
one scoreless inning) and Kim Seo-hyun (three
while Moon Hyun-bin (two hits in four at-bats
one home run and one RBI) shone in the lineup
Noh Si-hwan (2 hits and 1 RBI in 4 at-bats) and Chae Eun-seong (1 hit and 1 RBI in 4 at-bats) also supported him solidly
but he lost for the second time of the season (3 wins) because he did not receive scoring support
Moon Hyun-bin (Hanwha Eagles) fired a home run shot of atonement
Moon Hyun-bin was listed in the starting lineup of Hanwha as the third batter and left fielder in the home game against the Samsung Lions in the 2025 professional baseball KBO League at Hanwha Life Ball Park in Daejeon on the 5th
With two outs and no runners on base in the bottom of the first inning
Samsung starter Choi Won-tae's six-pitch 140-km cutter hit a solo arch to the left with a driving distance of 105 meters
It was the moment when Moon Hyun-bin's fifth shot of the season came out
it was a meaningful home run in that it shook off the disappointment of the game the previous day (4th)
Moon Hyun-bin got on base with a hit ball after one out in the top of the fourth inning against the Gwangju KIA Tigers on the 4th
but was checked by KIA catcher Kim Tae-gun for his complacent base play
who met ahead of the match against Samsung on the 5th
there were some disappointing performances at the beginning of the game
The third scene (with Moon Hyun-bin out) was a moment the director couldn't stand
"I was excluded because I was a player who needed to learn baseball more seriously," he said
"Baseball is a sport in which balls move on the field
but all of our players studied well," he said
he was proudly included in the starting lineup
we have to put Moon Hyun-bin in the starting lineup
There is no need to talk about it separately
The important thing is that we won even though it happened
And as if to live up to manager Kim Kyung-moon's belief
Moon Hyun-bin fired a cheerful home run from his first at-bat
is leading 1-0 at the end of the second inning
"Foreign players (such as Cordy Ponce and Esteban Floral) played a good role and won valuable one
I hope we can present victory to our children's fans."
who looked back on his victory the previous day

Hanwha also posted a 3-1 victory against the Gwangju KIA Tigers on the 4th
Starting pitcher Ponce pitched hard with two hits and two outs in seven innings
five strikeouts and one run (0 earned run)
who was a pinch hitter in the second half of the game
also showed his presence with one hit and one run from two times at bat
" (starter) Ponce gave the score with a fielder's error play
and he was able to follow and turn the tables
"[Florreal] played a lot of good roles yesterday
I came out and showed good hits and baserunning
If Ponce played a good role on the mound side
Foreign players played a good role and won one precious victory," he said with a bright smile

set up the starting list with Choi In-ho (designated hitter)
"Moon Kim Dae-jeon (a showdown between Moon Dong-ju and Kim Do-young)" was canceled
but the best foreign starters will be able to face off

the 2025 professional baseball KBO League game between Hanwha led by head coach Kim Kyung-moon and KIA led by head coach Lee Bum-ho will be held
they were scheduled to face off on the 3rd
Hanwha starter Moon Dong-joo and KIA's representative batter Kim Do-young could have played a match against Moon Kim
As Hanwha changed its starting pitcher from Moon Dong-ju to Cody Ponce
a head-to-head match between foreign starters was set up
Ponce is one of the best foreign pitchers of the year in name and reality
After being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers as the 55th overall pick in the second round in the 2015 draft
Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2020 to 2021

he played seven games (46 innings) with five wins and no losses with a 1.96 ERA
he met once in Daejeon and won the season's matriarch with seven hits
I also talked to commentator Park Yong-taek
but I think it's the most "TOP" among pitchers who have come so far
it also drops from the strike zone to the floor
I definitely thought that I practiced a lot of those balls in Japan
Nail is also one of the best foreign pitchers in the league
he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with a total of 608 in the 20th round
and played in 17 major league games (24.1 innings) in the St

I'm sorry to the fans who gave me strength in the away game in Daejeon
He failed to take advantage of the opportunity and even allowed a run
I'll show you a better performance in the next game
The match against Seoul is a very important game
As we talked about after our first showdown with Seoul this season
All members of Anyang are determined to achieve their goals
I think he would have been disappointed with his lack of goal-scoring ability
Movement from the front is also really important

Gangwon FC lost 0-1 away to Hana Citizen in Daejeon on April 27

Gangwon scored the winning goal in the 28th minute of the second half

The problem was the scene that led to a corner kick
Lee Ki-hyuk's ball from the left hit Kim Moon-hwan and went out of the goal line
That's where the winning goal of Daejeon came out
This is because he missed an opportunity to add points despite the unfavorable factors of numerical inferiority in the away game in the leading match

An 8-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by a teacher at an elementary school in Daejeon on Monday
The child's parents became alarmed at around 4:50 p.m
Monday when their child did not arrive at a private academy as scheduled
was enrolled in the school’s after-school program for students of working parents
They reported the absence to both the school and the police
Authorities traced the child's phone to a multimedia room inside the school
where they discovered the victim next to a woman
The injured woman found at the scene confessed to stabbing the girl
is currently hospitalized for suspected self-inflicted wounds but is not in critical condition
It remains unclear how the child was connected to the teacher
Multiple local reports indicate that the teacher had returned to work in December after taking time off for depression
A report also stated that four days before the incident
the teacher exhibited erratic behavior and acted violently toward a colleague
The motive for the attack is still unclear
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to the attack

National Working parents fearful following Daejeon school tragedy
Tracking app sparks debate over dilemma between kids' safety
The recent murder of a first grade student by her teacher inside a Daejeon elementary school has left South Korea reeling
especially for working parents of young children
a working mother of a 4-year-old is one of them
I can't hand over my daughter personally from kindergarten to private academies
which gives me no choice but to ask academy teachers
Just a few years before my kid enters elementary school
"Whenever my daughter tells me about the strangers she comes across on the way to academies
adding that the ardent belief that school is a safe place to entrust children to has completely shattered
The tragedy has amplified concerns about school dismissal safety
Unlike the common perception that the biggest risk for young students occurs on their commute home due to traffic accidents
the recent case has demonstrated that unexpected dangers exist even within school grounds
I couldn't get hold of my daughter for 30 minutes after school as her phone was off and she was confused about where the shuttle bus was parked
It made me realize that just knowing the route home isn't enough
Though school dismissal protocols could vary by school
elementary school students must be escorted by an adult guardian
some parents opt to allow their children to leave school on their own by signing a waiver
In areas where private academies are not as prevalent
some parents resort to hiring "school pickup helpers" through local community platforms
with fees ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 won per trip
because younger students finish school early in the afternoon
finding a reliable helper can be challenging
Despite the government operating a subsidized childcare escort service for children aged 3 to 12
eligibility is limited to families earning between 150 percent and 200 percent of the median income
the average wait time for the service last year was nearly a month
The shortage of workers is partly due to the low wages -- at just above minimum wage -- making recruitment difficult
the government can not significantly raise wages as it could create disparities with other social service jobs such as senior caregivers and welfare workers
an education government official explained
With limited resources for keeping track of children's whereabouts
some parents are turning to a tracking application
igniting a fierce debate among parents and teachers
The victim’s father revealed that he used a monitoring app installed on his daughter's phone to help locate her after she went missing from the school's after-school program
allows parents to track their child's real-time location and listen to surrounding sounds remotely
While the app played a crucial role in uncovering key details about the child's final moments
its use has sparked concerns about privacy and surveillance in schools
many parents are now considering installing similar tracking apps to ensure their children's safety
“This tragedy made me realize how important it is to have some way to check on my children,” said Kim
“It’s not about invading privacy but ensuring they are safe
Another parent who wished to be anonymous echoed similar sentiments
“I understand teachers may feel uncomfortable with the idea of being monitored
teachers have strongly opposed the use of such apps in schools
arguing that it crosses ethical boundaries and turns classrooms into spaces of constant surveillance
“Parents could be listening to everything happening in the classroom without us even knowing,” one teacher wrote in a private online forum for educators
“I might have to start making students turn off their phones when they enter school

Daejeon is five points ahead of second-place Jeonbuk Hyundai
Daejeon is a team that made all-out efforts to stay in the K League 1 last season
"The top priority is to make Daejeon a team that can compete stably in K League 1," after being deployed as a firefighter during the season and leading the team to stay
At the center of it is striker Joo Min-gyu

Kim Hyun-wook then explained two things that Joo Min-kyu is different from other strikers

The K League 1 Wrap-Up: Who Will Challenge Daejeon Hana Citizen
Despite only five games being played this weekend, there was still a lot to talk about, with the top of the table looking extremely competitive, and potential new title contenders emerging. With that in mind, Nathan Sartain returns to recap all of the action from round 10 of the 2025 K League 1 season
new teams seem to enter the potential title race that’s brewing
and now Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors either have
or likely will be mounting a challenge to current league leaders Daejeon Hana Citizen
with plenty of the aforementioned sides enjoying favourable starts to their 2025 campaigns
their current six-game unbeaten run has moved them into second
In a 2-1 away win over Suwon FC this weekend
the Green Warriors weren’t exactly on top form
and realistically couldn’t have argued should the game have finished level following Lee Taek-geun’s late equaliser for the home side
But contenders always find ways of churning out results
and thanks to Jeon Jin-woo’s sixth-goal of the season
Gus Poyet’s men found their winner in the 96th-minute
That’s now the fifth league victory of the season for Jeonbuk
who took 24 rounds to reach the same total last year
Gimcheon Sangmu reasserted their own ambitions
beating Ulsan HD 2-0 to leapfrog the Horangi and move into third
The military side may still be six points away from Daejeon (albeit with a game-in-hand)
but getting back to winning ways following back-to-back defeats is a big step in the right direction
and keeps them firmly in touch with the other top teams
Yu Kang-hyun will be relieved to get on the scoresheet this week too
helping set the groundwork for what was ultimately a comfortable Gimcheon win
they dominated in a 1-0 win over Gangwon FC
who themselves went down to 10-men after a reckless Kim Kyung-min challenge on goalkeeper Lee Chang-geun early in the second-half
The Purples will be pleased with their buildup play here
as it showed a lot of promise despite the fact the eventual breakthrough came via a corner
Daejeon are now currently five-points clear at the top
Over the past few weeks, FC Anyang have shown their mettle as a competitive K League 1 club
and one capable of going toe-to-toe with any other team in the division
Not only have the Violets managed to win three of their last four home matches
earning positive results by way of genuine quality
Ryu Byeong-hoon’s men have moved into the top-half
potentially on their way to a comfortable season
avoiding the promotion/relegation playoffs would constitute a successful debut in the top-tier
and provide a steady platform to build upon
but have the Violets also shown they can aim just that bit higher
there’s certainly plenty of room for a number of teams to secure a Final A finish
and there’s no reason why Anyang can’t jostle their way in
especially if they keep their form up on their own patch
Plus, in recent history newly-promoted sides do actually fare quite well when making the step-up to the top-flight. In fact, the last two seasons have seen the reigning K League 2 champions finish in third-place, while Daejeon Hana Citizen (who had won a promotion/relegation playoff to earn their spot in the 2023 K League 1 lineup) comfortably finished eighth when they came up
you certainly can’t rule out Anyang having similar fortunes
Upcoming in round 11, the bottom four teams in K League 1 will have a chance to take points from each other
a Saturday afternoon match sees 11th-placed Daegu FC face Jeju SK
with the Sky Blues hoping to reverse a run of seven consecutive defeats
but have been in relatively decent form overall
winning two and drawing one of their last five matches
A victory for Jeju here could put them as high as eighth
although they have picked up just two points on the road so far in 2025
some Saturday night action sees Gangwon FC host bottom-place Suwon FC
they were defeated 1-0 away at Daejeon on Sunday
ending their two-game winning streak in the process
This makes it two wins and four losses across the provincial club's last six outings
so they’ll aim for better consistency in the coming weeks
and believe round 11 represents an opportunity to work towards that goal
and will be unhappy with losing consecutive matches after finally earning their first win of the year back in round eight
The highest Kim Eun-jung’s men could climb is 11th should they triumph - or even draw - next weekend
but it would at least afford a chance at some breathing space away from rock-bottom
Pohang Steelers held onto a 1-0 lead against FC Seoul
with Oberdan’s seventh-minute winner the difference
the Steelers now sit just outside the top-half
whereas Seoul have extended their winless run to four matches

is accused of fatally stabbing seven-year-old Kim Ha-neul at an elementary school in Daejeon [DAEJEON METROPOLITAN POLICE]
Suspect says victim was random; tragedy sparks concerns over school safety
Police investigating a tragic case of a teacher fatally stabbing an 8-year-old girl at an elementary school in Daejeon said Tuesday the teacher's attack had been planned but was not targeted
releasing her confession that she randomly chose the last student leaving the school
the attack occurred Monday inside a storage room connected to the audiovisual room on the second floor of the school
was found with multiple stab wounds to her face and shoulders
was also found with self-inflicted injuries to her neck and hands
Emergency responders transported both to a nearby hospital
but the child succumbed to excessive blood loss
while the teacher survived and is receiving treatment
Daejeon police relayed the suspect as saying that she has been receiving treatment for depression since 2018 and that she had been "annoyed" after returning to school following a leave
because the vice principal had refused to allow her to teach
The teacher had filed for a six-month leave of absence on Dec
2024 and returned to work after 22 days on Dec
the suspect said she had purchased a knife at a nearby market
(I chose) the last student to leave the after-school program
I told (the student) that I had a book to give her and lured the student into the audiovisual room
The suspect is reported to have unlocked the audiovisual room
and waited for the last student to leave the classroom next door
The child's parents became alarmed around 4:50 p.m
Monday when their daughter did not show up to meet a bus driver from her private academy as scheduled
The first grader had been enrolled in the school’s after-school program
The after-school teacher initially told the driver that the student had already left the classroom
When the student failed to appear after 10 minutes
prompting authorities to realize that the child was missing
The tragic incident spread shock waves across South Korea
raising urgent questions about school safety
teacher mental health monitoring and the education system’s ability to prevent such acts of violence
The tragedy also sparked criticism over the security and supervision of the government’s after-school program
after-school teachers are required to personally take students to their parents or designated guardians
as the attack occurred while the child was still on school grounds
questions are being raised about whether school staff failed to follow procedures
A Daejeon education office official stated that after-school dismissal procedures vary by school
Authorities revealed that the teacher had a history of mental health struggles and had previously taken medical leave for depression
She initially filed for a six-month leave of absence on Dec
but returned to work after just 22 days on Dec
Concerns are mounting over whether her early reinstatement was adequately assessed before allowing her back at the school
the suspect reportedly twisted a colleague’s arm in an aggressive outburst
she also complained about slow internet service and damaged a computer
The school administration reported the incident to the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education
Two education office officials visited the school Monday morning to address her behavior
The case has intensified criticism of the education office’s failure to prevent the stabbing having better addressed the teacher's mental health issues beforehand
While South Korea has policies allowing education offices to recommend leave for teachers unable to perform their duties due to mental or physical illness
the review committee responsible for such decisions has not convened since 2021
Many argue that better oversight and prior intervention could have prevented the tragedy
The incident has also reignited discussions on the urgent need for enhanced mental health support for educators
Teachers often face extreme stress and burnout
exacerbating existing vulnerable psychological conditions
Experts have called for stricter policies to check on teachers returning from medical leave
including mandatory psychiatric evaluations before reinstatement
Acting President Choi Sang-mok expressed condolences to the victim’s family and directed the Ministry of Education to conduct a thorough investigation
"Schools must be the safest place for children
This heartbreaking tragedy must never happen again," Choi said
police have launched an in-depth investigation into the motive behind the attack
An arrest warrant is expected to be issued once the teacher is discharged from the hospital
The victim’s grieving parents have demanded accountability
questioning why a teacher with a history of mental illness and who showed violent behavior had been allowed back into a school environment
"How can someone with a history of mental illness be put in charge of children
The school and education office must take full responsibility for this tragedy," the victim’s father said in a statement
Parents across Korea have expressed fear and outrage
saying their trust in school safety has been shattered
It’s terrifying to think that school — a place that should be a sanctuary— was where this happened
is the one responsible is just unthinkable," said the mother of an 11-year-old student in an interview with The Korea Herald

Oh Jae-seok does not play as many games as he did in his 20s
Oh Jae-seok takes the center stage so that the team does not falter when variables such as injuries occur in Daejeon
Oh Jae-seok adds stability to the team with his constant performance no matter when he is put into the game
he plays the role of the eldest brother so that the players can move toward one goal from the training ground
"I want to play a lot for any player," Oh Jae-seok said after smiling
no player is greater than the team." "I'm a veteran
A veteran must find what the team needs and do it
If you have your last dream before taking off your soccer boots
I really want to lift the trophy in Daejeon," he said
This is what "MK Sports" talked about with Oh Jae-seok
We need to deliver better performance and results to fans who visited our home stadium
He has been leading since the beginning of this season
Aren't you keeping the team at the center of the game both on and off the ground
What do you say to your juniors the most these days
"Let's focus on continuing this flow." Players don't need unnecessary pressure
We want to put down the burden and focus on what we have to do
but playing the season brings a crisis for any team
It's really important how you spend that hard time
We'll work it out together when there's a problem
Daejeon made all-out efforts to stay in the K League 1 last season
It was a completely different trend from this season
All members of Daejeon have not forgotten their memories of difficult times
We know how hard it is to fight in the relegation zone
There are no eternal strong or weak players in the K-League
Now we can get down if we slip a game or two
Players are alarmed that 'they should never fall down to the relegation zone again'
We are pouring everything out every moment based on our experience last year
There is a lot of competition in the rankings
It would be interesting to see someone who enjoys K League 1
but the players seem to be under a lot of pressure
The difference in points between the top and bottom is not large
Depending on the results of one or two games
We will play eight games including the Korea Cup in May alone
I don't think we'll have a rough outline of the rankings until May
You have to pour everything out thinking that it's the last game of each game
You don't get many chances to play in Daejeon
I know that he is keeping the team at the center without expressing his feelings
There's no player in the world who doesn't want to play
it is our match that is more important than me
but there are players who can't play depending on the situation
All members are accepting director Hwang Sun-hong's choice
It is important to quickly find the role to play and do it
His career is just around the corner (laughs)
The K League 1 championship cup has never been lifted while living professionally
If I can achieve one before taking off my soccer shoes
I want to reach the top of the K League 1 in Daejeon
is taking the center stage of the match from the front
Isn't Joo Min-gyu also a player who takes the center stage both inside and outside the ground
Joo Min-gyu is not only good at soccer but also has excellent character
The biggest difference between last year and this year is probably Joo Min-gyu
I think he's showing his skills through records
All members of Daejeon believe in the resident regulation
Joo Min-gyu is living up to that belief every game
As Daejeon has performed well since the beginning of the season
we will definitely play until the last round
If we do our best every moment while focusing on what we have to do
he won the Korea Cup in 2001 when coach Lee Tae-ho was in charge
He has no experience of winning in K League 1
There is a dream that Daejeon fans want to be remembered as a winning member

National Teacher who killed student was 'annoyed' she was excluded from class: police
DAEJEON -- A teacher accused of stabbing an 8-year-old student to death at an elementary school in the central city of Daejeon has said she was "annoyed" at being excluded from a class
The female teacher in her 40s gave the statement to police after admitting she stabbed the girl on the second floor of the school on Monday
The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital due to excessive bleeding
"I got annoyed just three days after returning to work," she was quoted as telling the police
after accusing another person who was not identified of stopping her from teaching a class
Police said the suspect was found to have received treatment for depression since 2018 and thought of killing herself while on a six-month sick leave that began in early December
purchased a weapon before returning to the school in search of a target
The teacher told police she waited for children to file out of an after-school class with the intent of dying together with a child
"I told the last child leaving that I would give her a book and took her with me to the audiovisual room where I strangled and stabbed her," she was quoted as telling police
The suspect also stabbed herself and is currently recovering at a hospital
She was found to have shown signs of aggression earlier as well
when she reportedly twisted the arm of another teacher for asking if anything was wrong
The two were separated by other faculty members
but no reports were filed with the police at the time
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency said it has secured court warrants to detain the teacher for questioning
and search her home and vehicle to confiscate cellphone
They also plan to conduct an autopsy on the child's body to help determine the exact cause of death
changed their mind and agreed to allow the procedure

The city of Daejeon in South Korea is moving forward with its new light rail project after the signing of a Won293.4bn ($219.4m) contract for its first hydrogen trams and the reveal of further information on its construction
The Won1.5tn Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 project will see the construction of a 38.8km light rail line in the city that will be served by South Korea’s first domestically built hydrogen trams from Hyundai Rotem
Daejeon’s local authority also announced that it would give the first construction orders for the project this month for five of the project’s 14 sections
The remaining nine sections will cover the installation of light rail tracks on existing roadways and will begin construction sequentially from January 2025
with the project expected to begin services in 2028
Mayor Lee Jang-woo said the city decided to break the project up into different sections to increase the participation of local contractors in line with its 49% while allowing larger companies to still take on the difficult sections
He said: “When establishing the tram construction order plan
we subdivided the construction sites and significantly lowered the bidding participation requirements to expand the opportunities for local companies to participate.”
