has been selected as the ‘2025 Tree of the Year’ by the Korea Forest Service
long considered a symbol of peace and protection for local residents
The announcement highlights the pine tree’s role not only as a natural monument but also as a key cultural asset
The selection is part of a national campaign to promote public awareness of protected and heritage trees and to develop them as local tourism resources
The selection process included a document review
and an on-site evaluation by a panel of experts
The Jukseong-ri pine tree was chosen from among 46 candidate trees across 11 cities and provinces
recognized for its unique connection to local traditions and community life
Designated as a protected tree under the Forest Protection Act
this particular pine stands near a traditional village shrine known as a Dangjip
Locals still hold annual ceremonies beneath its branches
a traditional ritual offering prayers to the sea god for safe fishing and abundant harvests
The tree is also associated with the local intangible cultural heritage of bountiful harvest festivals
further reinforcing its role as a living symbol of regional identity
the pine tree scored highly in both qualitative and quantitative categories
These included assessments of ecological value
along with factors like the local management system and promotional activities tied to the tree
Online voting results were also considered in the final selection
The tree is one of 228 protected trees currently managed by the city of Busan
The oldest protected tree in the region is a 1,346-year-old zelkova in Jang-an-eup
while the youngest is a 104-year-old pine in Noksan-dong

National At least 6 dead, 25 injured after Busan construction site fire
At least six people died and 25 were injured after a fire broke out at a hotel construction site in Busan on Friday, according to the National Fire Agency.
The fire agency stated that the Busan Fire Headquarters first received a fire report at the Banyan Tree Hotel construction site in Gijang-gun at around 10:51 a.m.
Authorities arrived at the site nine minutes later and rescued those trapped on the building's 12th floor using helicopters. Six were found in a state of cardiac arrest and their deaths were confirmed at 1:44 p.m.
Twenty-five were declared to have suffered minor injuries due to smoke inhalation while 14 others were rescued from the roof. More than 100 of the construction workers inside the building evacuated.
With most of the fire extinguished by 1:34 p.m., firefighting officials began to search the building's interior. Fire officials added that the police and local government officials still had to “determine the exact number of workers who were inside (the construction site).”
The Busan Fire Headquarters also issued a level two emergency response alert out of its three-tier system, requiring most personnel from eight to 14 nearby fire stations to respond to the scene. According to the National Fire Agency, 124 fire trucks, 352 firefighters as well as three fire helicopters were deployed to the site to extinguish the fire and conduct search operations.
Though the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, authorities presume insulating material loaded near a swimming pool on the building’s first floor was a factor.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Interior and Safety dispatched an on-site situation manager to the scene at noon.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered the mobilization of all available personnel and equipment to assist in firefighting efforts. He called for “thorough search and rescue efforts to prevent any loss of life,” while also ensuring the safety of firefighting personnel.
At 2 p.m., the Interior Ministry led a situation assessment meeting with related governmental agencies.
During the meeting, General Director for Disaster and Safety Management Yi Han-kyung urged the National Fire Agency to focus on fire suppression and to conduct on-site search and rescue operations while also instructing the Korean National Police Agency to ensure strict safety control around the site of the accident.
Yi requested the Busan Metropolitan Government activate its disaster safety headquarters to provide immediate assistance to the firefighting officials’ search and rescue efforts, while also directing the Ministry of Employment and Labor to help oversee the process of determining the cause of the incident.

Rooting Down - The first floor serves not only as a space for the residents but also as a point of visual interaction for pedestrians passing by, allowing the building to establish a strong presence in the area. Although a piloti parking structure was necessary, we minimized the number of columns, separated the upper mass, and used different emphasizing geometric forms, we aimed to make the building appear as if a tree had sprouted from the ground, firmly rooting itself in the landscape.

Andong Boribap offers a gratifying Korean dining experience
Andong Boribap features a wide-open dining area and lots of space between tables and is widely-known for its boribap (barley rice)
Once a traditional humble dish that didn’t get much attention
barley rice restaurants have been making a comeback of sorts as a healthy dining option that offers loads of fresh vegetables for the health-conscious diner
It’s also a great restaurant for those looking for a vegetarian option
though they do serve meat if you can’t go without
There are six kinds of hanjeongsik — each comes with boribap
though if you prefer normal rice you should ask for that when ordering
We ordered the ttadak bulgogi jeongsik (in the main photo
which came a bit later since they grill it outside after your order
All the side dishes which came in a wide variety were fresh and delicious; not salty and well-seasoned
Their bulgogi is usually pan-fried and there is a bit of soup
their ttadak bulgogi is cooked all the way through leaving no juices
they give doenjang-jjigae or kimchi-jjigae
The rich taste of deeply fermented kimchi was so good that I felt like I could have finished my rice with only the stew
The bowl that the barley rice is in is quite big because it comes in a bibimbap bowl which you can make with all sorts of goodness
This hearty and healthy meal tastes great in the countryside and is rather refreshing on a hot day when you want something light
you may need to check before asking because some of them
and japchae will be charged from 3,000 won to 5,000 won though additional barley rice is free
comes with ttadak bulgogi and bossam (boiled pork slices served with vegetables)
The simplest and cheapest jeongsik they offer is boribap (12,000 won per person)
from 12,000 won to 18,000 won and Korean alcohol and soda are available for 2,000 won to 5,000 won
especially around 12:30 pm when they are most busy during the day
There is a huge parking lot free for customers

"Is it Starbucks?" Starbucks Korea is talking about a special store that is being introduced recently
Representative examples include Gijang Imrangwon Branch
which is decorated with beautiful gardens and large 3-meter dolls in Busan
which emphasizes harmony with Uiam Lake in Chuncheon
Starbucks is increasing its special stores because it is trying to differentiate itself from low-cost coffee centered on takeout by using a new store experience with specialized elements
According to the coffee industry on the 17th
Starbucks is preparing to open a new store (Sinchon-ro branch) containing different elements near Sinchon Station on Line 2 next month
It is the first time in three years that Starbucks has opened a store in Sinchon since 2021
The company refrained from opening additional business districts to prevent cutting between its stores
This is due to the judgment that new demand can be created through 'differentiated stores'
Opening a specialized store in Seoul is also worth noting
will feature colorful artworks in collaboration with illustrators popular with Generation Z
Considering that there are many "Kagong people" who are college students nearby
the company plans to arrange a single seat and a multi-person table where several people can sit and study
"The overall store design is composed of colors and materials that have a clear contrast compared to general stores."
Starbucks is rapidly increasing the number of differentiated stores that apply differentiated elements to general stores such as Sinchonro branch
which offers a view of the Gwanggyo Lake Park area from the 41st floor at the top of Gwanggyo SK View Lake
There are also "Yongin Gogi-dong Amusement Park" where you can enjoy coffee with a natural view of pine trees
and "Gangneung Jumunjin Branch," which remodeled the old squid factory building
Starbucks' goal through store differentiation is to provide customers with a new store experience to beat the pursuit of low-cost takeout coffee
low-cost coffee brands such as Mega MGC and Compose Coffee are aggressively increasing their stores
Mega MGC Coffee had only 1,188 stores in 2020 but increased to more than 3,000 as of September
Monthly credit card payments have increased by 89% over the past three years
In addition to increasing the number of differentiated stores
Starbucks is also speeding up the creation of a "special store." Starbucks' special store consists of a "THE store" and a "concept store." The store has become a symbol representing the region through its overwhelming view
Concept stores are meant to inspire new people or reflect on the value of regeneration through unique spaces such as 100-year old houses and traditional markets
It is known that the number of specialized stores
including 11 special stores and differentiated stores
"The company's goal is to become a final destination for customers
not a place where stores are lightly passed in everyday life."

Lotte Premium Outlet Dongbu San Branch was visited by 6.5 million shoppers last year alone
and more than half of its domestic customers were confirmed to be outside Busan
it said that it has established itself as a major tourist course in Busan
with the number of foreign tourists visiting from January to July this year up 60% from the same period last year
One of the latest trends when traveling to Busan is skipping the beaches at Haeundae and Gwangalli
Contemporary people who have made travel part of their routine feel compelled to find new places to go and things to do
That’s not where travel trendsetters go on their trips to Busan
I visited four of Busan’s hippest destinations on a three-day trip on July 20 on behalf of those who are planning a trip to Busan for the summer holiday
Moisture was in the air at Ahopsan Forest (located in Cheolma Township
Busan) when I arrived just after noon on July 21
The tree branches stretching into the sky rustled in the breeze
Ahopsan is named for the nine peaks in the area
But there’s no need to be intimidated by the word “peak” — these are mild and modest hills
and the tallest only has an elevation of 361 meters
The forest in the area covers 528,952 square meters
the first thing to greet me was a colony of pine trees
have been designated for special care by Gijang County
Given the prevalence of pine trees on the Korean Peninsula
I wasn’t particularly impressed by the scenery here
the forest unveiled its true charm near a sign that said “Maengjong Grove at the Shamanistic Ritual Site.” There was a modestly sized clearing here hemmed in by dense thickets of maengjong
the local villagers believed it was under the sway of guardian spirits from the nine mountains
they had the local shaman perform a ritual in the clearing
The bamboo trees around the clearing bore witness to people’s hopes and fears
The bamboo trees grow to a height of 10-20 meters and are quite thick
Maengjong is the thickest of the bamboo species native to Korea
I spotted two huge stone pillars that looked familiar for some reason
The pillars had been set up for a scene in “The King: Eternal Monarch,” a television drama that didn’t live up to the typical success of Kim Eun-sook
a Korean screenwriter known for her Midas touch
That drama wasn’t the only production to take advantage of the bamboo grove
It has also featured in films such as “Kundo: Age of the Rampant” (2014) and “The Tiger” (2015)
“The King: Eternal Monarch” may have failed to draw in viewers
but the stone pillars are a popular spot for tourist snapshots
was taking photographs with her younger brother Chan-woong
“The lush bamboo grove is gorgeous; you can feel nature in all her power,” Chan-woong said
Su-hyeon’s bleach-blonde hair stood out against the bamboo trees
This family said they’d come to “enjoy some peace of mind.” They had no reason to go to Haeundae or Gwanganri
The forest trail is 3.2 kilometers (1.9 miles) in total
meaning that it takes an hour and a half to walk the entire route
and oleander trees are of course beautiful
but the real highlight lies in the second forest
It covers an area of 10,000 square kilometers
Light and shadow dance with each other between the dense bamboo trees
Those taking a break on the benches close their eyes
The breeze flowing through the forest lingers around them
encouraging a quiet tranquility to settle over them
Who are the owners of the two biggest bamboo groves in the country
The groves are a product of more than 300 years of hard work by the Nampyeong Moon clan
who have protected and nurtured them through the Japanese occupation and the Korean War
he follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Moon Ui-soon (d
The forest was originally closed to the public for fear of damage
but it gained fame after it was used as a movie location
which led many to ask for it to be reopened
A warning written by the owner follows you as you walk: “We are cutting down all bamboo trees that have been carved into with graffiti
the fewer trees there will be in this forest.”
the kind you would imagine came straight out of Kim Cho-yup’s SF stories

P.Ark is a large cafe-type complex cultural space with a total area of 16,693 square meters in a six-floor building with a basement
The bakery café on the fourth floor has more than 1,000 seats and covers an area of 1,983 square meters
the area has become an attraction for 700,000 people a year
thanks to the scenery and more than 100 types of baked goods
the 41-year-old CEO of the ship repair company Jeil SR Group
Ryu is the son of the company’s founder Ryu In-seok
This explains why P.Ark looks a lot like a large cruise ship when seen from a distance
He even graduated from Korea Maritime and Ocean University
He explains that he built P.Ark because he “wanted to contribute to local development and to turn Yeongdo into a hub of Busan tourism.”
Yeongdo District was listed alongside Busan’s Dong (East) and Seo (West) District by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as one of 89 regions experiencing population decline
they have recently been filling again as the number of visitors grows year after year
A key factor in that has been the emergence of numerous cafés
“They’ve also gained two new branches of Starbucks
a company that is very picky about locations,” he noted
The cornerstone for Yeongdo’s coffee culture was laid early on by cafés like Momos Coffee and Cotton Diary
which took up residence at a pier for small ships in the city’s Bongnae neighborhood
has carried on P.Ark’s approach of scenery-based content
It was created in a converted dockside warehouse
with one of its walls given over to a large picture window that offers a view of the busy activities on the pier
the city of Busan announced in July 2022 that it planned to turn a 600-meter section of Bongnae Naru Road near the pier into a specialized “coffee street.” In November
Also enjoying popularity are coffee shops in the island’s Huinnyeoul Cultural Village
and Bongsan Village and on the slopes of Mount Bongnae
Yeongdo has become a real “treasure island.”
Another sight awaiting Busan visitors is the string of coffee shops that have opened along the beaches of Gijang County
Perhaps the most representative of these ocean view cafés is Waveon Coffee
which ushered in the Gijang “coffee village” culture with consistent success since its 2016 opening
It boasts unique scenery with its location by a cliff in the village of Wollae
Another premier location is the outdoor courtyard
which is decked out with dozens of blue cushions
This place doesn’t just sell coffee — it offers a leisure experience where visitors can enjoy a pause in the company of the sea
Waveon Coffee’s success touched off a boom that has seen dozens of new coffee shops appearing all the way south to Ilgwang Beach
D1 Bakery Café has attracted notice by setting up a photography spot with designs imitating the scenery of Greece’s Santorini Island
Even the same locations take on different looks for travelers during the day and nighttime
I visited at 7 pm on July 21 to board a Yo Company yacht anchored by the Suyeongman Bay Yachting Center
which I’d reserved the day before through the website of the travel agency Busan Special Travel Forces
The tour is available in “public” and “private” options
where the private one involves renting the yacht to yourself
I went with “public.” The cost was 25,000 won for a little over an hour
there are around 40 yacht tour companies operating in Busan
they typically fall in the range of 25,000 to 30,000 won and up for an adult ticket
“Places like Jeju and Yeosu also have yacht tours
but Busan is the only one where you can really enjoy the cityscape at night.”
and the yacht slowly began heading out to sea
it passed by the Nurimaru APEC House convention center
said this was his second yacht tour in Busan
I like being able to see the sea from up close
Gwangan Bridge hove into view just as the red fabric of twilight was beginning to cloak the city
The lights of the cars on the bridge seemed like stars
I could hear the lyrics of Cho Yong-pil’s song “Words of the Wind”: “Even when your kind heart is hurt / Life is warm.”
The last spectacle of the yacht tour was a firework display on the boat
It’s the sort of thing that might seem dangerous — but Yo Company CEO Hong Sang-gi explained
“It’s safe because they’re being exploded in the other direction where the wind is blowing.”
which has emerged as a hot spot in the city’s Suyeong District — so popular that a long line had already formed even before the complex opened at 10 am
The most eye-catching part was the terraced seating modeled on a Roman amphitheater
The scene visible through the picture window opposite it seemed like something out of a film noir
and the image looked like the sort of place where the characters “Sergeant Kwon” (Zo In-sung) and Jang Do-ri (Park Jeong-min) might have had a brawl in the movie “Smugglers.”
The combined shopping center/cultural space was built by Kitchen Borie
the same company that operates The Bay 101 and Old Tree Market elsewhere in the city
It was designed to resemble an old warehouse in New York
with a 4,447 m2 of floor area on a site measuring 7,722 m2
It includes a Starbucks and around 25 other businesses
Another distinctive shopping destination that has been drawing notice is Village de Ananti
a resort/cultural space that opened on July 18
a cultural space with a gross floor area of 19,834 square meters
I found a space designed to give the same feeling as traveling through the winding streets of a small European or American city
A combined coffee shop and clothing store has been opened here by the brand Saint James
a company with a 130-year history that is seen as synonymous with the “nautical look.” The bookshop Hazel has shelves lined with art books and other distinctive publications
The 86 select shop brands and 15 independent stores each offer a different color sense and a different take on interior designs
Also located here are food and beverage establishments like Le Blanc
the grocery store Moby Dick Market is of note to gourmands with its array of foods in unusual forms
Village de Ananti is a village-style resort with an area of 160,000 m2 — twice the size of Ananti Cove next door
and the accommodations at the hotel Ananti at Busan
it also boasts five swimming pools and 11 outdoor squares

by including the panoramic view of the seashore as a main feature in this project, hee soo kwak reveals how one can grasp the relationship between a natural scenery and architecture
the primary condition developed lies in maximizing the length of the building openings that face the sea and beach
a wide and long corridor bearing seating spaces with ocean view deliver internal voids at the center — embracing more diverse coastal sceneries
this is achieved by stacking long and sequential spaces with various heights and connected to each other via a bridge.
one can enjoy the sea over the tall pine trees
the outer space of waveon café includes pyeongsang — an outdoor furniture traditionally used for small group activities
instead of setting a wide terrace on the beach
a series of those elements placed under pine trees acts as semi-individual spaces to enjoy a meditative time with a cup of coffee around natural scenes
an obliquely punched concrete wall offers perforated viewpoints towards the sea shore beyond the pine trees
wide and spiral corridor bearing seating spaces embraces many diverse scenes from outdoors
one can notice the extended horizon where sea and sky become one
a privileged view that is most striking during sunrises and sunsets
in this unique café building where nature and artificial settings meet via meditative and playful ways
visitors can experience a new type of retreat just sipping coffee and sitting at a table.

A farm cultivating seaweed at sea in the Republic of Korea has become the first of its kind to be certified against the ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard
The farm is operated by Gijang Sustainable Seaweed Network
based in Gijang County in the Republic of Korea
The farm cultivates wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) at sea
processed and sold for human consumption around the world
Wakame has been farmed for over 1,000 years
and is used in a number of popular dishes such as miso soups
as well as being the main ingredients of seaweed salads
popular in sushi restaurants around the world
Its low calorie and high nutrient content mean it is considered by many to be a superfood
Gijang is the second producer to be certified against the ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard, after Euglena Co in Japan
and is the first farm cultivating at sea to achieve the certification
the farm has demonstrated a minimal impact on the environment
The seaweed is grown from spores produced by the farm
with no reliance on wild harvested seaweed
Wakame cultivated in Gijang is a well-known seaweed product in the Korean domestic market
“We are delighted to achieve ASC-MSC certification to demonstrate our responsible farming practices,” said Minsu Kim from Gijang Sustainable Seaweed Network
“Our seaweed is sold to customers around the world
and we want to give them the assurance that our products have been produced with minimal environmental and social impacts.”
“Congratulations to Gijang on achieving ASC-MSC certification,” said Patricia Bianchi
“The certification confirms the sustainable environmental practices of the operation
and their safeguarding of nearby marine ecosystems
and also ensures the good labour conditions of the hardworking employees
and positive impacts for local communities
“This certification is an exciting development because it means consumers in Europe and Asia will be able to enjoy the health benefits of seaweed that has been responsibly produced
As seaweed products increase in popularity it will become more important than ever to ensure they are farmed or harvested responsibly
and the ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard provides that assurance.”
The certification was marked with a ceremony at the Busan International Fisheries & Seafood Expo in South Korea on 6 November
The ceremony was attended by representatives from ASC
Gijang Haenyeochon is a must for diners looking for a wide variety of seafood caught fresh from the local seas
Haenyeo can be translated to ‘a woman diver’ in English and a Korean traditional Haenyeo traces back to Goryeo Dynasty
The typically elderly women go into the water off the local coasts and find marine products like seashells without a oxygen tank
Haenyeochon means ‘a village where Haenyeos live’
in which there usually is an area for the women to sell what they retrieved from the sea that day
I am not sure Gijang Haenyeochon is actually that kind of area
but surely all the seafood is always fresh and the atmosphere is nice
There are many pavilions by the coastline and they are pretty much the same in price and menu
so you can just pick one while walking around
My friend and I decided to go to “Grandma Jo’s” (조씨할매집) that day
This Haenyeochon is famous for their seafood sets which are served between 30,000 won to 50,000 won depending on the size
especially with an additional order of Jeonbokjuk (Korean style congee with abalone)
Knowing that we both eat quite well and there was no small size raw abalone
They were still alive and we could see them moving except one dish of cooked seashells
The healthy and fresh delicious taste kept us focused on the food — some were very chewy
The mussel soup was very nice to sip from every once in a while
Seaweed mixed with their gochujang-based sauce as a side dish can be a nice touch to enjoy the seafood and gives it a little kick
Switching between the two kinds of sauce — a gochujang and vinegar based and the other sesame oil based — mixed flavors which even for those who don’t enjoy seafood that much would appreciate
If you would like to enjoy specific kinds of seafood
you can order more individually and it will be between 10,000 won or 15,000 won per dish
We ordered Jeonbokjuk when we ordered our set so that it would be served when we almost finished with our main dinner
It is 10,000 won per portion and the minimum order is for two
It seemed nothing was really added and was kept simple with only rice
We were very happy with our choices and the atmosphere of the sea and the tent was a good reminder of simpler times these fishermen live in day to day
Many tables are empty yet during the day on weekdays but it can be a different story during the summer vacation season
Their pavilions do not have built-in electricity so they do not have refrigerators
Open: 09:00 – 19:00 (18:00 in winter) daily except the second and last Wednesday (need to check for national holidays)
Parking: Free at Gijang Haenyeochon Parking Lot (기장 해녀촌 주차장)

Andong Boribap features a wide-open dining area and lots of space between tables and is widely-known for its boribap (barley rice)
There are six kinds of hanjeongsik — each comes with boribap

We ordered the ttadak bulgogi jeongsik (in the main photo
Their bulgogi is usually pan-fried and there is a bit of soup
their ttadak bulgogi is cooked all the way through leaving no juices
they give doenjang-jjigae or kimchi-jjigae
The rich taste from deeply fermented kimchi was so good that I felt like I could have finished my rice with only the stew
The bowl that the barley rice is in is quite big because it comes in a bibimbap bowl which you can make with all sorts of goodness
and japchae will be charged from 3,000 won to 5,000 won though additional barley rice is free

Fans of concrete architecture should find a lot to like about this recently-completed project in Gijang
Designed by Heesoo Kwak and IDMM Architects
the Gijang Waveon cafe consists of stacked concrete blocks which are arranged in an attempt to maximize the available view
Commissioned by a client requiring a 500 sq m (5,381 sq ft) building atop a hill that would ensure as many customers as possible could gaze toward the sea
Heesoo Kwak and IDMM Architects designed three angular concrete forms
The interior of the cafe features ample glazing
which frames the view at multiple angles and the concrete structure is peppered in places with Swiss cheese-like holes
It's all very well executed and judging by the photos
doesn't appear overly cold or harsh despite the uniform color and use of materials
Heesoo Kwak and IDMM Architects used both standard tables and chairs and traditional Korean furniture made up of stepped wooden platforms for people to sit and drink
The building also culminates with a rooftop viewing point with more seating
We've covered a few notable projects that make fine use of concrete lately, including Lebanon's Casa Brutale and Peru's award-winning UTEC
South Korea boasts more than its fair share of outstanding concrete architecture too and IDMM Architects' website is worth checking out for some more concrete eye-candy
The Gijang Waveon was completed in December

tens of billions of won worth of fraud cases have occurred under the guise of the family of the head of a local government
According to the Gijang Police Station in Busan on the 6th
police are investigating allegations that A (in his 60s)
stole billions of won worth of cash while running the system against his acquaintances
A is accused of stealing 4 billion won in cash by running a system against his acquaintances since 2021
It is known that there have been about 20 confirmed victims so far
The police are currently confirming A's related suspicions based on the victims' complaints and statements
It is reported that the county chief said he had no knowledge of the allegations surrounding his sister and that he was irrelevant

the former mayor's daughter B (in her 40s) was arrested in Busan on charges of committing an investment fraud worth 15 billion won
B was arrested in January on charges of fraud under the Aggravated Punishment Act for Specific Economic Crimes
B is accused of stealing 15 billion won in investment from 20 people by selling the name of his father
who served as the mayor of Busan several times until November last year
saying that he would give profits if he invested in an empty bottle cleaning business
A police investigation revealed that B had never actually run an empty bottle cleaning business
B showed off his wealth by posting photos of vehicles worth more than 100 million won
but he reportedly turned the victims' money and eventually reached the point of selling luxury goods at a low price through a used trading platform
