assist with netting trout during a survey of the Gunpowder River fisheries biologists with the help of an electrofishing pontoon barge and a 12-person net crew waded central Maryland’s most popular self-sustaining brown trout fishery searching for what lies beneath the surface Between the Prettyboy Reservoir and the Loch Raven Reservoir is a 17-mile stretch of fertile trout habitat where wild brown trout have flourished since the late 1980s due to one of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ greatest success stories the gates of the Prettyboy Dam would open and close as seen fit by the City of Baltimore The reservoir’s drainage leads into the Gunpowder Falls which moves toward the Loch Raven Reservoir When the gates of the Prettyboy Dam were closed the upper span of the river effectively dried up Fisheries biologists measure and weigh the trout to estimate a population density DNR officials along with the Maryland chapter of Trout Unlimited worked with dam officials to negotiate a minimum flow keeping gates open at all times to provide constant cold water release The cold water comes from the depths of the Prettyboy Reservoir When the agreement was made for the dam to release water year-round department officials tested the area’s capability to sustain a brown trout fishery we had a thriving brown trout fishery that has really expanded and taken off beyond our wildest dreams,” said Mark Staley “The management has changed – in the past we used this as a put-and-take stream Once we applied catch-and-release management we found that brown trout were reproducing and had great numbers the area is renowned as one of the nation’s best trout streams and for its proximity to the populous Baltimore area Crews deploy anodes from the electrofishing pontoon barge which expel electrical current to briefly stun the fish Being a tailwater–meaning water located downstream of a hydraulic structure in this case a dam–this fishery shares features with other productive trout streams in Maryland particularly in the western region of the state and Casselman rivers are other go-to destinations for anglers to pursue brook trout wild brown trout and hatchery-raised rainbow trout “The Gunpowder has a very dense trout population,” Staley said “It compares very well to Western Maryland streams–maybe even more dense But we have seen some fish 24 to 30 inches and up in the very deepest pools.” The geographical features of Harford and northern Baltimore counties contribute to the success of the Gunpowder’s trout population Its proximity to metropolitan areas is key for public access and has several natural features working in its favor Grassy and shallow areas on the edges of the stream are important habitats for the younger where staying away from larger fish may be the difference between life and death Brown trout are an extremely predatory species which are known to eat small fish–including their own young–in addition to the standard diet of aquatic insects In the Gunpowder those insects typically range from mayflies to caddis to stoneflies Fisheries biologists place wild brown trout on a measuring board as part of the survey The river also has features such as riffles–shallow and oxygen-rich waters–where the trout position themselves downstream as they feed on the insects that lurk above guarded by the Gunpowder area’s scenic rock outcroppings and boulders and shallow and deep pools work together to create a well-balanced population of insects and trout in the stream Surveyed annually by DNR scientists since 1988 the Gunpowder has stayed remarkably consistent in its trout population numbers The study measures the young-of-year trout densities assesses the standing crop of adult brown trout and monitors the length and weight of the trout collected Scientists use the electrofisher to briefly “zap” the fish with a high-voltage and groups them in live-wells before the fish are analyzed This year’s survey collected 277 wild brown trout in addition to several other species who call the Gunpowder home and American eel were found in the quarter-mile stretch of the stream that was surveyed Prior year surveys have identified citation-sized brown trout and the ultra-rare brook/brown hybrid “tiger” trout While 2024 survey results will take some time to formulate early assessment indicates no reason for concern “We saw good numbers of fish,” Staley said different size classes and good reproduction there is every indication that the population is healthy and providing good fishing.” Follow it on Instagram at @gunpowder4410 for updates Pinhead Gunpowder is an East Bay The members are steeped in the fabric of the legendary ’80s and ’90s Berkeley punk scene: from Green Day to Crimpshrine you can peel away layers to find the through line is their friendship from adolescents to adulthood It’s that friendship that inspires Billie Joe Armstrong and Aaron “Cometbus” Elliott—after 30 plus years—to create together now “We began with Bill and Sarah (Kirsch) rehearsing at my house,” says guitarist and vocalist Jason White “Aaron was no longer doing Crimpshrine and he had decided to become an old recluse at the age of 20,” he laughs My bands had happened to end up having a practice room in the same warehouse where he was living and I think I was in three or four bands that all practiced at the same house “And then separately,” vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong adds “Aaron was on the Green Day / Cometbus tour We wrote a song together and Aaron was like ‘why don’t we all come together and see what makes the magic?’ And that’s how it all started.” Cutting apart Pinhead Gunpowder to reveal the members is like revealing the rings of a Redwood I think we started calling it a project and as soon as we put out our first seven inch “The snarky East Bay punk kids started calling us a super group And it’s even more absurd thinking about it now I think it sort of evolved into a real band just because it’s a real relationship and a real kind of work ethic that goes along with writing new material and getting together and jamming together out Oct 18 on Oakland record label and record store we’ve been doing it for 34 years now it makes us prouder that we’re able to pull it off and we don’t hate each other We’re still friends and we still like to get together and do this,” notes bassist Bill Schneider it holds a special place in my heart where it just feels like the right thing to do “It creates a different thing for me where I can get my head out of the other stuff that I’m doing and plug in here and go “It’s not like we don’t all have other things going on,” notes drummer Aaron Cometbus so it’s not like we’re bored and restless ‘let’s get the old group back together.’ It’s more like and we’re driven to do it.’ It’s hard to find the time but when you find the time Cometbus is also one of the most important writers/illustrators from the East Bay ’90s He’s also an archivist and backbone to the East Bay with his words His hands and his handwriting hold many stories in punk rock lore Listening to the backbeat on this record is appreciating how he holds it all together whether with a pen or a pair of drumsticks He states he has figured out how to drill down from long format prose to eloquence in 4/4 beats and in two minutes—give or take thirty seconds and I thought I had lost my opportunity,” he laughs but I didn’t know we’d do anything new I whittled down the lyrics from five pages to five paragraphs or five lines and I was really excited about the idea of trying a newer and I didn’t know if I’d get the chance.” He continues “Billie had a little bit of music and that kickstarted it We didn’t think we were going to make a full record ‘let’s get together.’ We do almost once a year but we get together just because we’re all friends.” “Any time I’m in New York and I would hook up with Aaron and he would kind of take me around to different places the more obscure unseen areas,” says Armstrong it was always sort of just these little mini adventures And then talking about life and old relationships and friends.” now that these guys all have kids,” Cometbus adds It isn’t just like the thing we do as a break from the rest of our life It’s also kind of integrated into it.” across time and distance the connection keeps them making new art we go and play music at one of our jam rooms and we thought we’d work on a couple new songs and it just kind of unfolded into “It’s great because it always kind of keeps things interesting,” says Armstrong and he talks about how much to write five pages of lyrics it made me realize how important lyrics are in songs and stuff like that And I think that’s one thing that I learned from Aaron in particular.” “I think also we grew up together and we still are growing up kind of,” Cometbus returns I think Jason’s voice is better than it ever has been it got a little more of a swagger over time It’s cool too to get to a place where everyone has their own ideas and they’re more confident about them.” then expanding the number of songs from EP to LP “I thought it would be somewhere around seven or eight songs,” Armstrong says “But then I think it ended up being 15 or 16 or something like that We were just in the flow and so we just kept going ‘I got another one if you guys want to try it.’ And they’re like “I don’t think we’ve ever had a plan though,” laughs Cometbus I think with (1997’s) Goodbye Ellston Avenue we are now going to make an album.’ But every other time ‘we’re going to record.’ We never got money from a record company to do it first ‘this is what we’re going to do.’ We’re just like let’s record.’ See what it looks like that sounds like about enough for a 10 inch.’” “We got into a room in Oakland and Chris Dugan was the engineer,” explains Armstrong “It’s pretty much how we’ve always done it Just blast a song out on a couple of takes and then start layering guitars and vocals and things like that on top of it.” “We were all present together for the whole thing,” Schneider details on the process of bouncing around ideas “There was a lot of back and forth of sending ideas and all that around Jason and Aaron had worked on a bunch of Aaron songs together by just sending things back and forth But then really it was when we all got in the room together is when all the songs came together…” “…And even when we were all in the room together “We were very pleasantly surprised when this all came together and we had all these songs and it really … to me felt like a record,” White says “I think our original plan was maybe doing an EP and then having some songs left over for other things and comps and things And then the closer we got to having it be finished “I know we have other albums that we cobbled together and one that we recorded all at once This is the first time where it’s like it’s a real LP.’ And there’s different themes and different things that balance out and different voices and different feelings.” Unt is in the present of what these lifelong friends Pinhead Gunpowder shows homage to the roots with lyrics about diners “Song for Myself,” the closing track on the record I end with a closing existential question: does this record connect more to your current being or who you were when you all met I think we’re all in different places and we’re all the same people with a lot of life experience behind it I think that it is reflected on the record.” We’re just excited for everyone to hear the record,” Armstrong concludes with a laugh Unt is out Friday, and you can preorder it from 1-2-3-4 Go! I think we just made our best record!’”Ahead of this Friday’s long-awaited new album Unt for a catch-up about how the record came to be why they’re feeling so strong as a band after three-plus decades and their “fantasy” of doing a proper tour… “If people like Green Day and they wanna know more about what I do and then Pinhead Gunpowder would show up in there…” a pretty good place to start for those ready to dive in (or if you’re just looking to get lovingly reacquainted) it shows that there’s still plenty of gas left in the tank after all these years this long-running and most beloved of side-projects all agree it’s their best record yet and we can do the East Bay punk records still,” Aaron nods and it’s cool just to be able to prove that four different people with different temperaments and from different backgrounds “I think it’s just that we get together and that’s what we do and what we sound like,” agrees Bill “I don’t think we tried to make it sound like anything – I think it sounds like Pinhead Gunpowder but it also sounds like nothing we’ve ever done before (laughs) I think Aaron’s playing and the way he accents on his hi-hat and the way Billie’s wrist sounds playing power chords on a guitar and the way me and Jason fill in the rest of it it all comes together in a very interesting way – and it just sounds like us!” Not that there had been any grand master plan for things to turn out like this Jason and Bill all wrapped up with Massive Green Day Business these past couple of years the guys would meet up sporadically for Pinhead rehearsals and jam sessions bringing ideas to the table as and when they were inspired to do so During the pandemic there was some remote work involved but crucially it was all about being together and making the most out of their unique musical connection “Once we decided we were going to try to put some songs together and then he and I would be on the phone trying to hash out songs,” Jason recalls So there was a little bit of prep involved but most of the creative stuff happened while we were all together.” “We were surprised that we had so many songs to record let’s just make a whole album,’” continues Billie “It’s the first thing that we’ve done since and we were definitely inspired to get together with songs and I don’t think we ever had the plans to make a full record,” Bill agrees let’s record a couple of songs and see what happens…’ and then over the course of a couple of days but I think we were happy and we got more excited the more we worked on it I think it became all of our favourite things we’ve done in a long time – or ever and kept us energised to make things better “One of my favourite records that we did was [1994 EP] Carry The Banner – that record was just us on fire for some reason,” adds Billie I think we just made our best record!’ And everyone’s like It’s fair to say Unt came together in an effortlessly enjoyable way but that doesn’t mean to say Pinhead Gunpowder take things easily and the desire to bring out the best in each other at all times “We don’t ever settle for anything that’s just “Everybody’s always pushing each other to get better The same goes for their views of the wider world While Bill ponders that there’s “a theme of hope and coming together on the record that we didn’t know was there” Aaron says the band’s collaborative duties on Unt also reflect the lessons learned over the past three decades “It’s not a record about being in your 20s – we’re middle-aged guys some of the problems that we had as kids are still with us and you have to fix them or face them,’” he says I think that’s exciting – you’re excited more about life itself.” they’re waiting – and hoping – to see if an opportunity arises to take it on the road “We haven’t really made any plans outside of making an album – except for some fantasies about maybe doing some touring,” says Billie “As soon as I’m done with my day job and I get a bit more free time sometimes we think about doing an east coast run or sometimes we think about doing a run in England and in the UK Maybe we’ll go to Venezuela and do a tour or something like that (laughs) “I think we can keep that dream alive about playing live but it’s just a matter of things falling into place.” Pinhead Gunpowder’s new album Unt is due out on October 18 via 1-2-3-4 Go Green Day will be getting their The same night, a Russian oil depot in Voronezh Oblast reportedly caught fire as a result of the drone attack Russian authorities said there were no casualties as a result of the attack in Tambov Oblast and that the roof of a house was damaged by drone debris It is not immediately clear whether the plant suffered any damage due to the attack The Kuzmino-Gat gunpowder factory is "one of the key facilities of the Russian military-industrial complex involved in the war against Ukraine," said Andrii Kovalenko the head of the counter-disinformation department at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council "The gunpowder produced here is used for various types of small arms and rocket launchers." She commiserates with her ladies in waiting, everyone’s hair is a ratty mess, and anyone who has a ruff lets it float I should give this production credit for having Mary in France, speaking French, which obviously plays to Clémence Poésy‘s strengths as this main character But the miniseries has such a heaping helping of all the other faults any credit I’d give them is wiped out Starting with this recycled prom dress that Mary will wear off and on throughout the show Is there anything about this show’s portrayal of Mary that bears resemblance to the actual MQoS Quick jump to Queen Elizabeth’s court where she’s all pissy that MQoS is returning she has wild poodle-permed blonde hair for some inexplicable reason And she demands that Mary’s half-brother do nefarious shit for her (the only close to historically accurate bit so far!) both are wearing a ruff and some gold jewelry who’s waiting in a barn with rag people until someone shows up to tell her where her kingdom is Guess she and all her ladies are doing the dumb hair Riccio shows off a rare hat in this half of the miniseries though it would be a little more appropriate for the second half of the miniseries He’s also wearing a far fancier cape than his queen or any of her ladies in waiting And he’s weirdly given a port-wine stain birthmark on his face because James and Bothwell lead Mary supposedly to Edinburgh (dinkiest version ever) there’s some weird Children of the Corn running-through-fields action where Mary’s haunted by her mother in yet another a floating ruff (I’ve lost count already) I think that must be where this promo shot comes from. Why must frock flicks hate on Mary of Guise so much About this point in my notes I wrote “this is such crap,” for those playing along at home since he’ll be Mary’s love interest (GAG WRETCH PUKE & ALSO SO WRONG HISTORICALLY) The douchey haircut doesn’t help things There’s some bitching between James and Riccio (who’s carrying the poodle; let’s show he’s gay without saying he’s gay eyeroll), and Bothwell eyes up Mary in her bedroom. Then Mary decides to hold a Catholic mass to piss everyone off some more. Her ladies wear napkins on their heads because this show is unclear on the topic of historical headgear The priest performing the mass has glam-metal hair Is this the 16th-century version of a hot priest The crowds of filthy Scots try to break into the mass complaining about the “monstrous regiment of women,” as he does and she gets all gooshy at him because he got hit in the head and is bleeding Time for a council meeting and another floating ruff, this with a pin-tucked dupioni dress (which Mary might have been wearing under the cloak she wore when she arrived in Scotland) Everyone argues about religion and how Mary’s weak blah blah blah Does that look anything like the few extant contemporary images of Mary Queen of Scots James heads off to report all this to Queen Elizabeth She’s thrown a not-too-bad red and gold damask coat over her one red gown James comes up with a scheme to get Mary to condemn the pro-Catholic Scottish Huntly family who were the only ones supporting the queen He busts into the Mary’s sitting room where she and her ladies are enjoying their floating ruffs while Riccio plays some tunes Huntly’s mom freaks the fuck out and begs Mary not to execute her son Mary goes to the execution and talks to Huntly and then STANDS THERE right on the platform next to him as the ax comes down Because I needed you to see that vinyl vest and neoprene mask on the executioner Even bloodthirsty royals like Henry VIII didn’t actually take part in the executions they ordered The insanity of this ever happening is matched by the stupidity of the dress she wears to do so: Furthermore, there’s cheap upholstery trim on dress, and it’s cross-laced (when it should be spiral-laced) in the back with grommets Bothwell tells her she must learn to enjoy executions and rule by fear where the Scottish lords are pumped that Mary executed a Catholic She’s back in the David’s Bridal dress but the cross-lacing and overall bad quality tells me they’re in there Nobody bothered to make hand-sewn eyelets for this production “I would take a husband!” boom Next scene no-good dresses and their accompanying ruffs that float Mary is apparently One Of Those People who takes their dog everywhere Darnley’s costume is fine for a low-budget production but the dudebro haircut lets everyone know he’s an asshole Mary and Darnley flirt and dance — the music is period They all sit around a dinner table as Darnley and Mary flirt more so Bothwell gets drunk and jealous and yells at Mary Some random ladies at this table have semi-decent French hoods, though that’s not how a partlet + a ruff go together It looks like she stuffed some napkins in her bodice Bothwell is woken up by the poodle with Riccio later because the queen wants to see him Bothwell gets sent to jail for being a stupid git but she interrupts and says she wants to marry him That’s about the only decisive thing she’s done Somehow it makes sense to Mary and Riccio to release Bothwell and use him for protection Mary gives her ladies and Riccio wedding gifts (shouldn’t it be the other way around?) and now Bothwell interrupts to try and propose that she marry him Her dress throughout these scenes is inoffensive Darnley also gets a new suit for the wedding it’s weird that this movie shows their marriage as just the signing of some fancy documents who recites her genealogy because she doesn’t want Mary to have a child that’ll inherit her throne James talks about framing Darnley for the murder of Riccio Elizabeth is wearing what has to be a rental 1890s costume with giant leg-o-mutton sleeves but the whole scene is shot in the dark with only a few tight closeups of Elizabeth so they are definitely trying to hide an inaccurate costume but her husband is out drunk and carousing Mary tells Bothwell he was right about Darnley being an asshole Mary has lost the few hairpins she ever owned Maybe Darnley’s trading them for booze The Scottish lords find Darnley in the tavern and easily convince him to join in the gang killing Riccio since it’s a mob of men grabbing him right in front of her Oh and Bothwell is busy fucking some chick at this time so he can’t help (what happened to his boner for Mary James gives Mary the document showing that everyone signed so he begs Mary to let him come with her as she tries to leave but nobody’s come out and said she’s pregnant which is weird from a historical angle (she was visibly pregnant at Riccio’s murder) She seems to get a hat at some point on the way as they hide out in the woods If I squint HARD — and maybe if I was drunk — that doublet might vaguely possibly bear some relation to this ensemble: Then he visits her tent at night to say goodbye and she finally admits she’s pregnant (which would have to be via Darnley given all the cute-fighting that’s only sublimated fucking between her and Bothwell) oh there’s Bothwell and there’s James Elizabeth asks who’s killed her soldiers and Bothwell conveniently sent her a note saying Mary’s child is the rising sun / son (get it?) She adds a partlet and cuffs to her outfit It was tightly curled and close to the head and Darnley reluctantly acknowledges it’s his baby Mary parades the baby in front of everyone The baby’s wrapped in a curtain and gets a little crown. Mary and her lady in waiting call him James VI of Scotland and I of England already Someone says Bothwell’s dying somewhere so they kiss and fuck energetically and loudly Elizabeth is wearing that red and gold coat again She should be wearing an English fitted gown a very popular style from the 1560s through the end of the 16th century and it was cut straight in the front from neck to hem The skirt might be opened some to show off an elaborate forepart but that’s different than actually being cut towards the back (which I bet this show did to save fabric because they had a low budget) Elizabeth was shown wearing a red fitted gown But that lady in waiting comes back and cracks a bottle over Darnley’s head as he’s trying to rape Mary Bothwell tries to tell Mary how to get out of her marriage Darnley recovers enough to take baby James and threatens him / Mary let’s kill Darnley at Kirk o’ Field Couldn’t get a full-length screencap of Mary’s robe because she’s running around in the rain the idea that Darnley’s murder is Mary’s idea is such bullshit This is some fiction right out of the Casket Letters (look it up) Mary confesses to a priest while Bothwell puts gunpowder around Darnley’s house but that doesn’t kill Darnley (which is accurate at least) and Bothwell chokes him to death (Darnley was found outside the house Kevin McKidd, who plays Bothwell, said in an interview: we’re not making a documentary or writing a history book here that’s wrong historically in my view therefore this drama is invalidated’.” Yeah, we’ve address that a billion times in our FAQs. We know this is entertainment, but we like the history Bothwell reports back to Mary that he was seen killing Darnley so she has to hang him or she’ll be blamed OR she has to marry him because they won’t kill the queen’s husband Darnley’s servant was a fuckbudy of one of Mary’s ladies in waiting Since that guy also got killed with Darnley this lady is now pissed at Mary and tells her off Why should we care about these randos and their floating ruffs James is getting ready for battle — he stirs up a crowd by calling Mary worse than a whore Mary’s council is down to a few holdouts and the camera lingers on a life-size portrait of Mary Queen of Scots that’s been hanging in the council room the whole time It’s a red version of the iconic Hilliard painting made at the very end of her life That image is taken from this miniature made during Mary’s captivity in England: Which was expanded to various full-length paintings during James’ reign circa the 1610s though it was never done in red that I know though he has to pick fights with guys on his own side Huntly’s mom comes up to Mary’s camp just to curse her before the next battle But Mary preempts more fighting by taking baby James and giving herself up to her half-brother James What happens is that James steals the baby and shoves Mary into a carriage and then drops her into a prison pit but I guess it’s a shorthand for the final battles Stay tuned for more stupidity in part two tomorrow I remember watching this ages ago and being angry that after part one… we never see Mary again Like her story just ends and then we’re stuck with James for another hour It’s just two terrible stories jammed together on the weakest pretext I can’t believe this was made by the Beeb Nothing remotely like that type of side-saddle existed before the 1830s anything more appropriate probably would have cost a lot of extra money to hire but they could at least have thrown saddle-cloths over the saddles (which sometimes was done at the time) to hide the inappropriateness which was quite normal in the 16th century if you had to go fast or over rough ground as the sidesaddles of the day were just not safe enough for that those are 100% modern snaffle-bitted bridles with the noseband taken off – presumably to make them look more ‘primitive’ Keep the snark flowing by supporting us with a small one-time donation on Ko-fi Where to find and destroy the gunpowder for the Nagahama Black Powder quest Stopping the gunpowder shipment in Assassin's Creed Shadows is part of the Nagahama Black Powder quest you need to complete to track down The Mourner Shinbakufu Before you can do this though, you must find the Teppo Factory clue first, then you can start tracking down the gunpowder. We found this Assassin's Creed Shadows task much easier by being stealthy you also cannot sabotage the gunpowder if the guards are on alert - so be careful here's how to stop the gunpowder shipment in Assassin's Creed Shadows The gunpowder shipment in Assassin's Creed Shadows is on a large ship south of Teppo Factory and south-west of Nagahama castle in Nagahama (in north-east Omi) We've marked the ship's location on the map below but it should be highlighted for you on your map: head to the south dock and steal a boat (you can also swim there if you want) head for the rear side of it and then start to climb up it until you get to the deck We assassinated them silently to continue our path forward When you're on the deck at the rear of the ship You need to make your way to the second floor We did this by climbing up the outside quickly and in through the upper window we've marked on the image below: so as soon as you reach this area you need to engage quickly and take them out or they'll alert the rest of the boat to your presence look at the table on the left side of the room and collect the item on here from here exit out of the window and make your way to the front of the boat using the rooftops stay in the middle of them to remain hidden from view When you're at the front of the ship you should see a lot of gunpowder barrels here The one you need to sabotage will be a smaller black one that's marked with your quest marker you must remain anonymous or you won't be able to sabotage it wait for the large enemy below to be the only one there (sometimes two more are in the area drop down from the roof when the large enemy's back is turned and find cover again when the large enemy's back is turned stay crouched and make your way to the barrel run to the edge of the ship and dive off into the water to start swimming away A cutscene will then follow that marks the end of the quest © 2025 Eurogamer.net a brand of IGN Entertainment No part of this website or its content may be reproduced without the copyright owner's permission Eurogamer is a registered trademark of Gamer Network Limited Gunpowder Siege is an explosive three-part series that dramatically reimagines the most infamous rebellion plot in British history Prepare to see the story you thought you knew blown wide open as myths are shattered to reveal the forgotten The premium drama plunges into the aftermath of the foiled plot, spotlighting its three leaders – Robert Catesby Instantly branded as the most wanted men in England, they race from London to the Midlands, seeking to ignite a Catholic rebellion. of us will be vaguely aware that the plot of the rhyme was carried out by the shadowy Guy Fawkes and he tried to blow up parliament and the King – James I of England and VI of Scotland The recent series Gunpowder (BBC – now on Netflix) went some way to telling the true story of the plot But the series should be watched with caution because it has the usual sprinkling of artistic licence Catholics in this country had survived a number of increasingly harsh penal laws under Elizabeth I from the Act of Uniformity in 1559 which mandated attendance at Church of England services to the ‘Jesuits Etc’ Act of 1584 which commanded Catholic priests to leave the country within 40 days or swear allegiance to the Queen Anyone protecting or hiding priests could be imprisoned (or worse) ‘Recusants’ – the word coming from the Latin to ‘reject’ or ‘oppose’ – is the term used for Catholics in this period who refused to comply with the law and were liable to pay increasingly heavy fines as well as being prevented from holding public office or attending university in England The new King was son of – the Catholic – Mary Queen of Scots and at his accession to the throne in March 1603 a nascent hope began to gain momentum in the English Catholic community that better and easier times were on the horizon and desperation and resentment began to simmer Robert Catesby took it upon himself to do something about this He gathered a group of co-conspirators around him and hatched a plan Catesby’s brothers in arms were Thomas Wintour Sir Everard Digby and Francis Tresham.  Percy rented a cellar beneath the House of Lords with a plan to fill it with gunpowder and blow the King and his parliament sky high before placing his nine-year-old daughter The plotters decided that the potential loss of life was justifiable if it meant the restoration of the Catholic faith Life in England at the beginning of the 17th century could be brutal and short Add to this the targeted persecution and oppression of Catholics and one might begin to understand the context for the Plot and why the plotters took the risks they did Guy Fawkes was an experienced soldier and understood how to use gunpowder and he ultimately converted.  Fawkes would have been at school in York when Saint Margaret Clitherow was arrested for harbouring Catholic priests and was tortured to death whilst pregnant with her fourth child but perhaps he had witnessed the execution and this had brutalised a young Guido Fawkes and led him to justify his later Fawkes was tasked with hiding the gunpowder in the hired cellar There was sufficient to destroy a large part of Parliament and kill the King and those gathered round him The conspirators met in various taverns to finalise the plot but concern amongst the group had began to grow that the safety of some of the Catholic peers might be at risk an anonymous letter was received by William Parker warning him to avoid the opening of parliament Monteagle delivered the letter to Robert Cecil the King’s trusted Spymaster (his portrait is rumoured to still hang in the headquarters of MI6) Guy Fawkes was discovered in the under croft near the barrels of gunpowder wearing traveling clothes and with matches and a pocket watch to time the fuse for the blast He was arrested and under questioning initially claimed he was ‘John Johnson’ but soon confessed to the plot under torture Authorities quickly apprehended other conspirators who had scattered upon learning of Fawkes’ capture attempted to rally support for an armed Catholic rebellion in the Midlands and they were eventually cornered by government forces In a final stand at Holbeche Hall in Staffordshire and several others were killed in a shootout while the rest were captured and taken to London for trial the main conspirators were put on trial for treason All were found guilty and sentenced to public executions and hanged The fate of Fawkes and his fellow conspirators was intended to serve as a cautionary tale reinforcing the government’s resolve to suppress Catholic resistance The 5th of November became an official day of national thanksgiving and fires burning effigies of Guy Fawkes to remember the infamous plotter the anti-Catholic feeling in England was stronger than it ever had been and the plot was used to justify the continued use of the anti-Catholic legislation and deepened religious division The plot was widely condemned by contemporary Catholics and also had a significant impact on ideas around politics and religious tolerance in this and later periods cementing the centralisation of government authority and the expansion of state monitoring of political and religious dissenters Catholic emancipation did not happen until 1829 and was not universally welcomed after the Catholic Relief Act of 1778 had left at least 400 people dead It is possible to condemn the actions and remember the history The Plot and Fawkes have left an indelible mark in the culture and memory of the country – whether this be through historical drama or events in Lewes and surrounding villages every 5 November where parades attract thousands of people with a parade of torches and the burning of an effigy of Pope Paul V (pope at the time of the plot) The plotters believed they were freedom fighters but were then as now widely condemned as terrorists Many groups through history have been oppressed whether the Catholics of 17th Century England or some of the many minorities oppressed in a range of different ways today there are many places today where allegiance to a particular faith may still lead to death Desperation motivates some people to desperate measures Emancipation took over 200 years from 1605 and the plot might well have delayed that moment As we move towards the bicentenary of Catholic emancipation in 2029 the fated plot acts a serious reminder of the importance of religious freedom today Not all of the places associated with the plot survive but here are some things to do and places to visit to learn more about this fascinating period of English history: The Tower of London: There is a range of graffiti left by prisoners in the Tower, including an inscription attributed to Thomas Bates in the Beauchamp Tower. https://www.hrp.org.uk/tower-of-london/whats-on/imprisonment-at-the-tower-exhibition/#gs.gvb0fx The lantern
