President Yoon Suk Yeol's decision to declare martial law earlier this week was a sudden and astonishing development
it was a frightening reminder of past turmoil and lives lost on the path to democracy
Yoon's order on Tuesday was not the first time martial law has been declared in the country's nearly 80-year history
South Korea has seen numerous political clashes in which martial law was decreed — including a pivotal episode in 1980 that left scores dead and a nation in shock
The country has faced a turbulent political history that saw authoritarian rule starting from its founding after gaining independence from Japanese colonialism all the way to the 1980s
a professor of Korean studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison
"This is a period in which there was a lot of political suppression
political violence against dissidents," Kim said
In all, martial law has been declared in South Korea at least 16 times, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
It has been decreed during times of war — including the Korean War — but it has also been issued by South Korean leaders who were seeking to stay in power in the face of protests
Martial law was first decreed in South Korea in 1948 by then-President Syngman Rhee after government forces faced a communist-led military rebellion
martial law was last declared in South Korea by Chun Doo-hwan
a general who rose to power in a coup following the 1979 assassination of President Park Chung-hee — a former general who had also declared martial law while in power to crack down on dissent
The day after Chun declared martial law in May 1980
students in opposition to the order took to the streets
staging demonstrations against military dictatorship in the southwestern city of Gwangju
sending in the military to beat back the protest
but families of the survivors have said the true death toll from what became known as the Gwangju uprising is far higher
The uprising would mark an important turning point in South Korea's path away from authoritarian rule
While the country would not formally transition to democracy until 1987
the shock caused by the violence in Gwangju was seen as a pivotal catalyst for change that helped make Chun the nation's last dictator
South Korea's constitution still allows a president to declare martial law as a "response to war
or other national emergencies," according to CSIS
the constitution also gives the National Assembly the ability to overturn a martial law declaration with a majority vote
Kim from the University of Wisconsin-Madison said that Yoon made a "huge miscalculation" with his decision to declare martial law
noting that there is a difference from when it was decreed by previous leaders
they could count on the support of the parliament because they were much more aligned with the president," he said
The president could count on the National Assembly "to not try to reverse the martial law decree in the authoritarian age."
He added that the National Assembly's decision to annul the decree within hours of Yoon's declaration — along with the mass protests that broke out in response to it – sends a powerful message to Yoon and future leaders: "This is not gonna work
that this is a very different time and a painful reminder to the president that he doesn't have the mandate of the people."

when they were tipped for certain relegation
they exceeded all expectations with a third-place finish in K-League 1 -- significantly surpassing their previous high of 6th in 2020
They have regressed slightly on the domestic front this year
in 7th position at current and competing in the relegation round rather than the championship round for the final five games of the campaign -- with the league divided into top and bottom halves after 33 matches
it is on a bigger stage where their eyebrow-raising exploits have continued
In their first taste of continental football, Gwangju have set the AFC Champions League Elite alight -- from the moment they pulled off a stunning 7-3 win over perennial contenders Yokohama F. Marinos on debut
After following that up with a 1-0 victory away to another formidable J1 League opposition in Kawasaki Frontale
it means that they currently find themselves top of the East Zone and are the only team in their half of the competition to still boast a perfect record
So just how have Gwangju come from nowhere to be the early pacesetters in the East Zone of the ACL Elite
the competitive nature of the South Korean football means that they continue to have a formidable squad
even if performances and results in 2024 have not reached the same levels as last year in K-League 1
Jasir Asani was the star of the show in their win over Marinos with a superb hat-trick, but Gwangju also had enough depth to keep imports Gabriel Tigrão and Beka Mikeltadze in reserve before both came off the bench to score
Gwangju FC have been the surprise package of the 2024-25 AFC Champions League Elite so far -- and are the only side in the East Zone to boast a perfect record of two wins from two. Hiroki Watanabe/Getty ImagesIn fairness
Gwangju also rotated four players between the two games -- hinting at the depth they possess that will be crucial if they are to make an impact across multiple competitions
But perhaps the greatest strength Gwangju possess comes in the form of their Lee
a forward-thinking manager in an at-times overly-traditional South Korean football ecosystem
rather than enjoy a break after a fine achievement
the 49-year-old opted to spend his holidays analysing top-level football in England in a bid to further his knowledge
he simply told News 1: "I want to see Arsenal's defence in person -- watching with a wider angle of the field."
Attacking football is a non-negotiable for Lee
Mikel Arteta and Roberto De Zerbi are managers he looks up to although
it is José Mourinho who he has been likened to in local media for his occasional volatile remarks -- usually directed at the opposition
Lee is an advocate of learning from the latest trends in football and it shows in his team
Gwangju press the opposition tenaciously. The fullbacks play high. His usage of a defensive midfielder -- primarily Park Tae-jun -- is not necessarily for added protection but
to allow the centre-backs to carry possession out of defence and partake in the build-up
Lee and his principles are a key factor behind Gwangju being a breath of fresh air in the ACL Elite thus far
They will look for it to continue on Tuesday when they return to continental action against Malaysia Super League champions Johor Darul Ta'zim

National Virginia state flag hung in Gwangju as mayor labels President Yoon Suk Yeol a ‘tyrant’
The city of Gwangju on Friday hung the flag of the US state of Virginia outside City Hall, in apparent defiance to President Yoon Suk Yeol and in support for his arrest on insurrection and power abuse charges.
The flag, which was apparently sent by the governor of Virginia, bears the Latin phrase "Sic semper tyrannis," which means ""thus always to tyrants," which is the state's motto. The state was among the 13 original British colonies in North America, and is where Patrick Henry famously said, "Give me liberty or give me death," during the Second Virginia Convention in 1775, amid the buildup to the American Revolutionary War.
"It’s the morning of tyrant Yoon Suk Yeol's arrest. And it is timely that the state flag sent by the Virginian governor and a letter of appreciation has arrived. The phrase on the flag holds a special meaning, 'Sic Semper Tyrannus'," Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung wrote on his Facebook page.
"It is a fact across all regions and time that anyone who abuses one's power must arrive at one's own destruction."
Yoon is currently under criminal investigation for insurrection and power abuse concerning his orders following the Dec. 3 declaration of martial law. He is subject to an impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court for the same charges.
Officials of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials were engaged in a standoff with the Presidential Security Service at Yoon’s official residence in Seoul on Friday, as Yoon’s security team refused to comply with the court-issued warrant for his arrest. The CIO suspended the warrant execution at about 1:30 p.m., citing safety concerns and adding that the team would consider how to proceed after a review of the situation.
The court-issued arrest warrant is set to expire on Monday.

Scanning the row of Beaux Mendes’s small paintings in the Biennale’s main show
it is difficult to place them as landscape paintings
But though these canvases seem devoid of sunlight—containing mostly ghostly gray or obscure dark brown shapes—they stem from a process that begins en plein air
“Black Forest,” is named after an area in the south of Germany that inspired it
Mendes comes from a long line of German rabbis, and their grandmother was a Holocaust survivor. They traveled to Germany to work in isolation on these shadowy works in both the Bavarian Forest and the Elbe Valley (beloved by Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich)
shadowy works conjure an ambivalent image of the artist’s familial history of displacement from this land
They also subvert the history of Romantic landscape painting
which glamorized the natural world with depictions of sweeping vistas and was used to bolster the fascistic ethos of the Nazis
In one of the upper galleries in the main Biennale pavilion, Alex Cerveny’s paintings depict a kind of historically informed
encyclopedic panorama gesturing to themes of historical international migration
a hilly desert landscape is annotated with illustrations of bodies
and alphabetical lists of names and places
drawing links between seemingly disparate themes
like Biblical plagues of Egypt and pop songs (“Yes Sir I Can Boogie,” “One Moment in Time”)
Cerveny focuses on the migration of Vietnamese people following the Vietnam War

Thick sludge courses through Yuyan Wang’s new film Green Grey Black Brown (2024)
Muddy petroleum bubbles in its crude form in clips of found aerial footage of crater-like oil fields
gigantic fingers place power lines next to miniature models of oil pumps
A creepily slowed-down version of Yes’s classic 1980s power anthem “Owner of a Lonely Heart” loops throughout the film
Presented in the main pavilion of the Gwangju Biennale
in a room carpeted wall to wall with fake plastic grass
the work splices together scenes of ecocide with scenes of artificial flower production on factory assembly lines
The result is a hypnotic meditation on globalization and climate change
In a corner of one of the main Biennale hall’s upper floors stands a strange, boxed-off room that viewers enter through plastic food service–style curtains. Inside, under whirring air conditioners, buzzing strip lights, and antiseptic-feeling silver walls, are a series of sculptures. Made of parts of a priceless Dutch colonial wardrobe and plated in copper, this is the work of American artist Brianna Leatherbury
the artist based their sculptures on the prized possessions of stock market investors who lent them objects that “they would take to their grave,” according to the artist’s description
it’s part of Leatherbury’s series “Insiders’ Grave,” and of their wider research into the meaning of value and ownership over time
Their copper layers seem to be peeling and discolored despite their temperature-controlled and sanitized environment
evoking the futility of capitalist structures on a decaying and warming planet
installation view of works from “Steles - Port-au-Prince” (2024) in the 15th Gwangju Biennale
French artist Gaëlle Choisne’s assemblage works assert the potentially healing role of art in documenting the trauma of the past
Eat me softly (Black unicorn) (2024)—on view at the Gwangju Biennale’s main pavilion—features a photograph of a derelict building UV-printed onto concrete slabs and leaned against the gallery walls

The Gwangju Biennale has announced Singaporean artist and filmmaker Ho Tzu Nyen as the artistic director of its forthcoming 16th edition
the event breaks away from its tradition of being helmed by prominent curators such as Nicolas Bourriaud
and performances that explore themes of mythology
Ho represented Singapore at the 54th Venice Biennale and later participated in the Shanghai Biennale (2014)
and in 2019 he co-curated the Asian Art Biennial in Taiwan
the Gwangju Biennale selected Ho for his proposal which foregrounds “the transformative power of art,” as well as his curatorial approach that is “designed to ignite a much-needed driving force in a time of global uncertainty.”
describing it as “a dream come true to return to Gwangju
and to embark on such a unique journey in this remarkable city.” He added that this edition “will bring together the energies
this Biennale will seek to generate propositions for change that are shared and shaped by all of us.”

Chung Jin-wook of the Democratic Party of Korea (first-term
Gwangju Dongnam-gap) will push for a bill to include the Supreme Court ruling in the constitutional petition
It is interpreted as targeting the Supreme Court
the Democratic Party's presidential candidate
to be guilty of violating the Public Official Election Act
lawmaker Chung announced that he would propose an amendment to the Constitutional Court Act on the 7th
"We are trying to substantiate measures to remedy people's rights by allowing constitutional petitions for court trials."
Article 68 (1) of the Constitutional Act stipulates that "a constitutional appeal may be filed with the Constitutional Court except for a court trial." The main point of the amendment is to delete the phrase "except for court trials" so that a constitutional petition can be filed against the Supreme Court ruling
it intends to put the Supreme Court under the Constitutional Court
there is also a calculation to shake the structure of the three-trial system to the 'four-trial system'
It is interpreted that the Supreme Court launched an offensive when it overturned the original court that acquitted candidate Lee and sent the case back to the Seoul High Court for the purpose of guilt
Some politicians point out that the Democratic Party of Korea is pouring out "Lee Jae-myung's bulletproof legislation." Rep
Kim Yong-min of the Democratic Party of Korea proposed an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act that requires incumbent presidents to suspend trial proceedings until the end of their term in office
Min Hyung-bae of the same party proposed a revision to the Court Organization Act
requiring more than a third of the Supreme Court justices to be filled with personnel who were not former judges and prosecutors
and floor leadership do," he told reporters the day before
"I'm trying to focus on people's livelihoods and the field." In other words
candidate Lee is a two-track strategy to take care of people's livelihoods and the scene
and the National Election Commission is taking a hardline response
Ulsan won 3-0 against Gwangju FC in the 11th round of the K League 1 of the 2025 season at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium on May 2
Starting with Lee Chung-yong in the 17th minute of the first half
Rakaba (31 minutes in the second half) and Eric (additional time in the second half) scored consecutive goals for Ulsan
Ulsan led the game throughout the 90 minutes and won in a good mood
This is what Ulsan coach Kim Pan-gon talked about with reporters after the game
Our players struggled because they didn't have field goals for a long time
but I even scored a lot of points with my good performance
They are players who do a lot of things on and off the ground when the team is in trouble
Veteran players are holding the center of the team well
"I hope they will control the game and focus the team well." The players fulfilled their orders well
Thank you for leading the team well from the training ground
Rakaba scored his first goal in an Ulsan uniform
I heard it was a goal in 264 days of the official match
I was very happy to see Lacava happy after scoring a goal
I hope they will perform better starting from this game
Jung Woo-young fell out due to muscle spasms
it's been a long time since I've played full time
Excluding Chung-yong early was also a choice for the next game
'Fullback' Rubik'sson was very intimidating
It's a choice to maintain a slightly more aggressive style
Rubik'sson is a player with many advantages
I want to continue to take advantage of those advantages
Lee Chung-yong also showed good performance
National Historic site of Democratic Uprising divided over Yoon’s impeachment
A longtime symbol of South Korea’s pro-democracy movement
Geumnam-ro Street in Gwangju became the staging ground for intensifying political divisions on Saturday
with protesters supporting and opposing President Yoon Suk Yeol gathering at the same time
held separately along a 680-meter course from May 18 Democracy Square -- commemorating the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising -- to Geumnam-ro
saw the biggest crowd in Gwangju since Yoon's declaration of martial law on Dec
The conservative Christian organization Save Korea organized a rally opposing Yoon's impeachment along Geumnam-ro
specifically on sections 3 and 4 of the road from 1 p.m
a rally in favor of impeaching Yoon was held on the other side of Geumnam-ro
led by the civic group Gwangju Emergency Action for Immediate Resignation of the Yoon Administration and Social Reform
To maintain order and prevent physical clashes
police formed barriers between the opposing groups using riot buses
Local media reported that the police unofficially put the number of people who participated in the anti-Yoon impeachment protest at 30,000
while 10,000 to 20,000 participated in the pro-Yoon impeachment protest
Geumnam-ro was the rallying site during the May 18
Gwangju Democratic Uprising against the military dictatorship of President Chun Doo-hwan
an Army general who had seized power through a coup in December 1979
Past demonstrations include the 2008 candlelight protests against then-President Lee Myung-bak and the 2016-2017 rallies calling for the impeachment of then-President Park Geun-hye
both of whom were affiliated with the Grand National Party and its successor
the Saenuri Party -- predecessors of the current ruling People Power Party
The demonstration by Save Korea is believed to be the largest conservative rally of the two held in Gwangju since Yoon’s failed martial law declaration
The first rally earlier this month had just over 50 attendees
Although it was structured as a Christian prayer service
the rally denounced Yoon’s impeachment and criticized opposition parties
Protesters filled the five-lane road and sidewalks
chanting slogans such as “Release the president!” and “Verify the election fraud!” -- a key argument used by Yoon’s supporters to justify his martial law declaration
They claim that the majority held in the National Assembly by the Democratic Party of Korea -- 170 of 300 seats -- was achieved under fraudulent circumstances
a Korean history lecturer who has gained attention for his outspoken opposition to Yoon’s impeachment
“The impeachment of 29 government officials by the opposition is an antidemocratic act
and President Yoon is unjustly imprisoned.”
demonstrators waved banners and chanted slogans calling for Yoon’s immediate removal from office
denouncing his administration as a threat to democracy
Many carried placards reading “No to dictatorship!” and “Impeach Yoon for democracy,” accusing Yoon of attempting to consolidate power through unconstitutional means
The pro-impeachment camp included high-profile figures from the opposition bloc
a Korean history lecturer and YouTube commentator with over 1 million subscribers
comparing it to “Nazi supporters holding a gathering at a Holocaust site.”
“Gwangju is the symbolic city of democracy
a place where free speech must be protected
holding a rally here in support of a leader who declared martial law is an insult to history,” he said
His actions were purely for his own dictatorship.”
calling them "an outrage by far-right forces” that insult democracy
"Far-right forces are holding a massive rally in Gwangju
mocking democratic values and constitutional order," Rep
floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea
“Any act that insults the May 18 Democratization Movement is no different from denying South Korea’s democracy and admitting to being a dictator," he added
Park Ji-won of the Democratic Party echoed a similar sentiment
dismissing claims that Gwangju was divided in half by the protests
“The idea that the city was split into two is absurd
It was never Jesus’ intention to mobilize some Christian believers for such a protest,” he said
Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo of the ruling People Power Party
described the conservative gathering on Geumnam-ro as a shift in public sentiment regarding Yoon’s impeachment
this is the first time a conservative rally of this scale has taken place on Geumnam-ro," Hong wrote Sunday in a Facebook post
"Geumnam-ro is a symbolic street of Gwangju’s democratization movement
The fact that a large conservative rally opposing impeachment was held there suggests that Gwangju is changing," Hong added
the presidential office issued a statement on Sunday to "express strong regrets" regarding those at the rally who aired deepfake footage that falsely showed Yoon and his spouse Kim Keon Hee calling for Yoon's impeachment as well as those at the site who took no action in response
Yoon's office added it would take "every step," including "firm legal action," against the individuals who created and distributed the deepfake footage

or when objects blend into complex backgrounds
nature may already have the solution to this problem
Cats are known for their amazing vision in both bright light and darkness
Their eyes are uniquely adapted: during the day
vertical slit-shaped pupils help them focus and reduce glare
and a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum boosts their night vision
and represents a significant advancement in artificial vision systems
demonstrating enhanced object detection and recognition capabilities and positioning it at the forefront of technological breakthroughs in autonomous robotics
"Robotic cameras often struggle to spot objects in busy or camouflaged backgrounds
especially when lighting conditions change
Our design solves this by letting robots blur out unnecessary details and focus on important objects," explains Prof
This approach has the additional benefit of being energy-efficient
as it relies on the design of the lens rather than on heavy computer processing
This groundbreaking technology unlocks exciting possibilities for real-world applications
transforming the landscape of robotic vision
The advanced vision system promises to elevate the precision of drones
enabling them to adeptly navigate intricate environments and execute tasks with unparalleled accuracy
"From search-and-rescue operations to industrial monitoring
these cutting-edge robotic eyes stand ready to complement or even replace human efforts in a variety of critical scenarios," emphasizes Prof
