Speaker of Parliament László Kövér met Puan Maharani
According to information from the parliament’s press office
Kövér informed his counterpart about the Hungarian government’s commitment to deepening relations with partners in Southeast Asia with the aim of finding joint answers to global challenges
the third largest parliamentary democracy in the world…with its tolerant values is a key Asian partner for Hungary,’
Apart from strengthening inter-governmental ties
Kövér said it was important to boost relations between the two countries’ parliaments
adding that exchange in the latter area was regular
Puan is also scheduled to meet members of the Hungarian–Indonesian Friendship Group of the parliament

House Speaker Puan Maharani defended the revision of the Indonesian Military (TNI) Law
asserting that the amendments have followed proper legislative mechanisms and do not reintroduce the controversial dual-function role of the military
Speaking at the parliamentary complex in Senayan on Monday
34/2004 on the TNI had undergone extensive discussions with various stakeholders
“A press conference has already clarified that three articles have been amended with input from multiple parties
There are no violations or actions that undermine democracy,” she said
Puan outlined three main changes in the revised law
which defines the military’s position under the president’s command in military deployment and operations
while its defense policy and administrative support fall under the Defense Ministry
which extends the retirement age for TNI personnel from 55 to 62 years
The third is an expansion of opportunities for active military personnel to hold positions in government ministries and agencies
“These amendments do not discuss or reinstate the dual-function role of the military,” Puan reiterated
Her remarks came in response to initial opposition from her mother
the chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)
According to Puan, Megawati’s concerns were raised before deliberations began
“That was before we discussed it together and reached a conclusion,” she said
now leading the working committee for the law’s revision
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad also dismissed concerns about civilian supremacy being undermined
“The draft circulating on social media differs from what is being officially discussed between the DPR and the government,” he stated in a press conference
Dasco confirmed that the revisions allow more active military officers to serve in civilian roles
including in the Attorney General’s Office
where military officers can now be appointed as Military Criminal Prosecutors under the Attorney General’s authority
only 10 ministries and agencies could appoint active TNI personnel
there are additional institutions based on necessity,” he added
Controversy Over Closed-Door Deliberations
Public concerns have intensified after reports emerged that discussions on the amendments were held behind closed doors at the Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta
Critics argue that such secrecy contradicts the government’s calls for austerity and transparency
especially as President Prabowo Subianto has urged cost-cutting measures across government institutions
The proposal to increase the number of civilian posts available to active military personnel—from 10 to 15
including in the Coordinating Ministry for Political
and the Supreme Court—has sparked opposition from civil society groups
The Civil Society Coalition for Security Sector Reform warned that this change could blur the lines between military and civilian governance
“This risks undermining civilian supremacy and increasing military dominance in bureaucracy,” the coalition said in a statement
three activists stormed into the hotel meeting room in an attempt to disrupt discussions
highlighting growing discontent over the proposed revisions
lawmakers aim to finalize the amendments before the legislative recess on March 21

because (I was) a housewife looking after children and all of a sudden
she was determined her children would live a regular life
the couple and their three children chose to live in Sri Melati – a cottage on Istana grounds
She also set about transforming the former government house into a symbol of a new nation
she would have to host the wives of visiting leaders
This spurred her to take English lessons so she could speak at events
with people remembering her delectable dishes even decades later
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he still had fond memories of her cooking
especially on one occasion when she prepared nasi ulam – a traditional dish with Malay
“She spent days collecting more than a dozen different herbs to make sure that she got the taste to perfection
but I remember it till today,” Mr Lee added at the 2017 launch of a book on Puan Noor Aishah’s life
said in CNA’s 2015 documentary: “Personally
and to actually supervise even the cooking of the dessert.”
I have not eaten gula melaka the way she prepared.”

Puan Noor Aishah was presented with the Laurel Leaf Award – its highest honour
the Puan Noor Aishah Awards was established to recognise achievements of outstanding Girl Guides
Puan Noor Aishah proved to be an adept manager who could juggle several tasks at once, and also made her own clothes for events
She actually manages the time very well,” said Mr Choo
“She cooks but she knows that things must end at a certain time
She must give herself time to change dress up and to be on time for the next appointment,” he added
Puan Noor Aishah supported her husband in his official functions both in Singapore and abroad
When Mr Yusof’s health deteriorated during his third term of office
she took his place to present medals for the 1968 National Day awards
He eventually died of heart failure in 1970
Puan Noor Aishah became the first Malay woman to receive an honorary doctorate – a Doctor of Letters degree from the National University of Singapore
Mr Lee said at the book launch that it was a “daunting task” for her to manage her large household while carrying out official and ceremonial duties
“She even hired a teacher to teach her English so that she could communicate effectively with Singaporeans and foreign dignitaries,” he noted
“But Puan Noor Aishah made all these appear effortless with her grace and poise

"She set high standards for the food served to Istana guests," said Mr Wong
Mr Yusof served three terms before dying of heart failure in 1970
his poor health in the last few years of his presidency led to his wife taking on more of his social responsibilities

House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani announced that the parliament will assess and discuss the US government's plan to relocate and evacuate 2 million Palestinian civilians from Gaza to Indonesia
“We may discuss this in Commission I and hear the government’s stance on the issue,” Puan said at the DPR building in Senayan
She said that Indonesia’s official position firmly supports Palestinian independence
“Indonesia’s stance remains steadfast in supporting the Palestinian government,” she added
Indonesia has strongly opposed any attempt to displace Gaza residents
calling the idea "unacceptable" following US President Donald Trump’s plan to relocate some Gazans to Indonesia
recently proposed the temporary relocation of 2 million Gazans during the post-war reconstruction process
with Indonesia identified as one of the potential host countries
The Foreign Affairs Ministry denied any knowledge of such plans on Monday and reiterated its position the following day
“Indonesia’s stance remains unequivocal: any attempts to displace or remove Gaza’s residents are entirely unacceptable,” the ministry said on Tuesday
“Such efforts to depopulate Gaza would only serve to perpetuate the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and align with broader strategies aimed at expelling Palestinians from Gaza.”
Indonesia clarified that it had not received any official communication regarding the proposed relocation and would refrain from speculating on matters without concrete information

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) will retain Puan Maharani as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the next five years
PDI-P is the only incumbent party which has not declared support for the upcoming government under Prabowo Subianto
facing the prospect of opposing a large pro-government coalition
This could potentially put Puan's speakership at risk if the party assumes an opposition role
PDI-P lawmaker Said Abdullah maintained that Puan will be renominated for the position of House Speaker in accordance with the current law
The 2019 law on the legislature stipulates that the party with the most votes in the last legislative election is entitled to the House speakership
While the law can be amended by a majority vote
which secured just over 16 percent of the popular vote
maintaining its status as the largest party in the lower chamber -- though its share of votes has declined from the previous 21 percent
"PDI-P will put forward Madame Puan Maharani as the sole candidate for the House speaker," Said Abdullah said
He added that the nominations for other leadership positions in both the House and the People’s Consultative Assembly would be announced at a later date
from the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra)
confirmed that his party has no plans to amend the current legislative law
a position that is also supported by its coalition partners

he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has been wavering for months between joining the coalition government of President Prabowo Subianto or playing the role of opposition
it is not clear whether it will have made up its mind
Matron Megawati Soekarnoputri remains unchallenged and confident that the congress will reelect her by acclamation as party chair
But the real power struggle is taking place between her daughter Puan Maharani and son Prananda Prabowo
but more about the direction the party should take
leads the faction in the party that wants to collaborate with President Prabowo’s administration
active in the party advising their mother on ideological matters
leads the camp that wants to keep its distance
if not take a harder line against the government
Which path the party will take will become clearer during the congress
when Megawati will make her choice for the new secretary-general
the second most powerful job in the party after the chair
Incumbent Hasto Kristiyanto is currently on trial for corruption and all evidence suggests he will not win the case
and he will have to quit the job if he goes to jail
Some names have surfaced as candidates for the job
including three PDI-P legislators Utut Adianto
Said Abdullah and Ahmad Basarah and Andi Wijayanto
Megawati as chair will have the sole power to pick the secretary-general
but both Puan and Prananda will likely lobby for their individual preferences
The PDI-P won the most votes and hence the most seats in the legislative elections in February 2024, but its candidate Ganjar Pranowo lost the presidential bid
The PDI-P is the only party in the House that is not part of the coalition government
and the 110 of 580 House seats it controls are hardly sufficient to combat Prabowo’s legislative agenda
did not put up a fight during the current deliberation of legislation that would allow military officers to take up civilian jobs

House Speaker Puan Maharani has called on law enforcement and relevant ministries to thoroughly investigate the recent shooting of five Indonesian nationals by Malaysia's maritime authorities
“Law enforcement and related ministries must immediately follow up on this case
and take necessary measures,” Puan said at the House of Representatives building in Senayan
The shooting left one individual dead and four others injured while they were aboard a boat
“The government must protect our citizens who have become victims and take measures to prevent such incidents from happening again,” she added
She said that the House’s relevant commissions would summon the Migrant Workers Protection Ministry to discuss and follow up on the matter
Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has urged the Malaysian government to take the incident seriously
“We are urging the Malaysian government to handle this matter with the utmost seriousness,” said Mirza Nurhidayat
the Director for ASEAN Affairs at the Ministry
Mirza said Indonesia and Malaysia have existing agreements regarding the handling of nationals who cross borders illegally
These include joint guidelines that outline the proper treatment of traditional fishermen who inadvertently cross into each other’s maritime territories
there are shared guidelines between Indonesia and Malaysia that regulate how traditional fishermen should be handled when crossing borders
There should be no arrests or acts of violence against them,” Mirza concluded

In case you didn't know, inboxes of those working at a fashion magzine reek of chaotic clutter—a gazillion emails and plummeting storage
all thanks to every single soul on this planet vying for a feature
you hurriedly press save and bookmark what beckons a larger feature
This is how I stumbled upon designer Hannah Khiangte's visually-pleasing genius
Shot in collaboration with stylist James Lalthanzuala
the synergies of both their friendship and creative flair melded seamlessly to give us ‘Rahbi Thar,’ a contemporary collection spotlighting Zo craftsmanship and conversation around culture
Here's our conversation with the talented designer
Hannah Khiangte (HK): My collection represents ‘Rahbi Thar’ is my attempt at trying to forge a new path and trying to share the joy of Zo textiles with the world
We really wanted to place the product in the right context because the puan is such a versatile piece of clothing
I want to show how relevant and expressive it can be
I try not to force the balance between tradition and modernity
How I interpret and present them is where modernity comes in
you just get each other’s messages without needing to say much
It was like watching my thoughts come to life
This was the first time I worked at this scale
every person brought something valuable to the table
It was a true team effort and our hope is that we’ve done justice to Zo textiles
people weren’t very familiar with the term ‘fashion designer'
But our culture has always embraced fashion
I was one of the first to start a fashion brand in Mizoram with very limited resources
I worked with what I had and soon I realised it was more than enough
the universe sort of conspires to meet you halfway
have in some form existed in other cultures too
people wear sarongs or similar silhouettes
But what we bring to the table is distinct
but they follow a thread that people around the world can connect with
It’s about finding that sweet spot between resonance and originality
That’s where this collection’s palette comes from
I love taking something that’s rough or unpolished and transforming it into something graceful
brings out a duality I find really powerful
I come from a very conservative and institutional background
That contrast between rebellion and discipline is something I carry in me
HK: I grew up in an era where being a backbencher was cool
It creates a kind of friction that feels alive
HK: I hope this collection brings new hope for myself and for my culture
Now is the time to connect with the rest of the country and the world
We are part of the voice of diversity that India is so proud of
and it’s time we’re seen and celebrated for that

Senior Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Puan Maharani downplayed tensions between her party and former President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo
insisting the relationship remains intact despite a year of political upheaval
always,” Puan said Friday while attending a fast-breaking event hosted by the National Democratic Party (Nasdem) at its headquarters in Jakarta on Friday
Her remarks come amid lingering speculation about a deepening divide between PDI-P and Jokowi
particularly after the party formally expelled him in December 2024 along with his son
The split followed a drawn-out power struggle that escalated when Jokowi’s tacit support for Prabowo Subianto in the 2024 presidential election cost PDI-P’s candidate
dismissed suggestions that her attendance at the Nasdem event was an attempt to mend ties
She said she was unaware that Jokowi would also be present
“I only found out [about Jokowi’s attendance] when I got here,” she told reporters
“I came because of Pak Surya Paloh’s invitation.”
Jokowi arrived at Nasdem Tower at 5:08 p.m.
with Puan entering the venue ten minutes later
Jokowi believed that his relationship with Megawati would remain intact
I think everything will be fine," former President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said after attending a fast-breaking event hosted by the Nasdem Party at Nasdem Tower in Gondangdia
When asked about the possibility of meeting Megawati soon
relations between Jokowi and PDI-P have been rocky since 2023
when party chair Megawati Soekarnoputri remarked that Jokowi would be politically vulnerable without PDI-P’s backing
The former president’s subsequent maneuvering—including his refusal to endorse Ganjar and his apparent support for Prabowo—only widened the rift
who strongly opposed extending presidential term limits
reportedly saw Jokowi’s pivot as an act of disloyalty
The divide culminated in Jokowi’s ouster from PDI-P last year
yet the former president struck a conciliatory tone in January
congratulating the party on its 52nd anniversary
Whether his message was an olive branch or a mere formality remains unclear
she urged all sides to drop divisive narratives
Let’s stop the unnecessary division and suspicion,” she said at the House of Representatives on Monday
emphasizing that rebuilding Indonesia requires collective effort
should be a time for reflection rather than political infighting
“It’s a moment to think positively and build the nation together,” she said
But whether PDI-P and Jokowi can truly reconcile remains an open question

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Puan Maharani, Chair of the PDIP’s Central Executive Board for Politics and Security Affairs, has addressed a recent issue regarding her potential replacement of the elected Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka
Puan acknowledged having heard of the rumors
of course,” she remarked at the Nusantara Lobby of the parliamentary complex in Senayan
The issue of Puan's possible replacement of Gibran as a vice president was initially raised by a political watcher
He suggested that Gibran's association with the Kaskus account Fufufafa, which has been linked to hateful and homophobic comments targeting President-elect Prabowo Subianto and his family
could jeopardize his status as the Vice President-elect
Jhon further asserted that Puan Maharani was among those names being considered as a potential replacement for Gibran
“Many believe that Ibu Puan Maharani will be proposed as a vice president alongside a less popular candidate
Puan will be chosen by the MPR and inaugurated as a vice president,” he speculated

“I’m so happy,” producer Park Tae-joon said at the Jeonju Cinema Project awards
one of the ceremonies indicating the festival was drawing to a close
“Every day I drank […] festival drinking.” Park’s admission was funny and honest
the kind of thing no one on-stage at an American festival would say even/especially if it were true (bad optics)
Jeonju was one of the most temperate festivals I’ve ever attended
with official parties ending by 10:30 or 11 and many choosing to go back and sleep after that
unofficially dubbed “the Hong bar” (a letter from Hong Sang-soo to the owner hangs on the wall) and locally beloved enough to be the subject of a documentary
which no complaints: I’ve aged out of that category
and the reasonableness of the proceedings was conducive to morning screenings and
walks by the river cutting through Jeonju’s absurdly verdant mountains
Tsai Ming-liang was attending with a retrospective of his ten “Walker” films to date
in which a red-monk’s-robe-garbed Lee Kang-sheng walks as slowly as possible through various locales (see above)
Tsai announced that the 11th installment will be shot in Jeonju during next year’s festival
While it would have been more surprising if he’d announced anything other than another Walker (minus Days
the series has constituted nearly his entire output since 2013)
he’s going to have a spectacular location for it
who acts as her therapist (everyone’s a multi-hyphenate to supplement their salaries—just like indie film!)
about falling for what’s essentially an apartment rental scam
while the latter is facing the eviction of her theater troupe from their soon-to-be-demolished building
Both stories connect to the 2006 destruction of an elementary school in Daechu-ri to make way for the expansion of Camp Humphreys
The Dauchu-ri protests are visualized as still photographs
with demonstrators’ faces unnerving smears like walking fingerprints; I shouldn’t have been surprised to learn these images were generated by DALL·E
it dawned on me that there were no men in the film
either speaking or background—this is a movie about women’s negative experiences
adding another layer of unease to multiple narratives of displacement
That move might be reminiscent of Céline Sciama’s repudiation of the male gaze in Portrait of a Lady on Fire
but her hyper-pointed intentions were all too clear; Yi-so’s thematic contours are discernible
but the mode of their presentation commendably mysterious
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a film so determinedly withholding
My favorite film of the festival was Puan, which was appropriate as I first became aware of the Jeonju Cinema Project when seeing Benjamín Naishtat’s second feature
That product of the initiative was a fervid
shot in shaky-cam black-and-white and following a blatantly allegorical cult through desert hysterics
represented an unexpected and successful move towards populism
with high production values and a strong narrative
a good time despite the seemingly depressive
audience-repellant topic of Argentina’s “Dirty Wars.” Now co-writing and -directing with María Alché (perhaps best known as the star of The Holy Girl)
Naishtat leans even further into making a film that’s as inversely audience-friendly as its logline (a comedy about philosophy) seems alienatingly arcane
observing professor Eduardo Caselli jogging through a park in a 270-degree circular pan to the jaunty strains of Charly García’s “Dos Uno Zero”; there is confusion about whether the song is diagetic or a tone-setter
but it’s revealed to be what the jogger is listening when he stops
The shot’s confident choreography and tonal diffusion is immediately arresting
(It also helps that the film—an Argentine-Italian-French-German-Brazilian [phew!] co-production—is visibly expensive-looking
From that deliberately attention-getting opening shot
Puan continues with verve while following Caselli’s protege
a philosopher introduced lecturing on Rousseau
Pena registers as default schmucky outside the classroom (unable to use his phone properly
constantly forgetting appointments) but comes charismatically alive within it
His fiefdom is threatened by academic rock star Rafael Sujarchuk (Leonardo Sbaraglia)
a charismatic silver fox fluent in German who
after teaching abroad for an extended period
drawing attention to himself and disrupting the only form of validation Pena has
Pena’s worldview is grounded in studies that seem archaic to some of his younger colleagues; Sujarchuk challenges his emphasis on Hobbes and “the old archaic pact of fear” with the relative optimism of Spinoza (!)
Puan is surprisingly moving in its portrait of a man who’s endlessly told that his frame of reference within a field of study that’s occupied his entire life is a static
that lifetime of study has actually meaningfully prepared him to take righteous action

27/09/2023 - Argentina’s María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat present a tragicomedy with political overtones about the meaning and loss of one’s ideals
The film revolves around the story of this lead duo
the clumsy and idealistic professor and the cynical go-getter
belonging to that generation that wanted to change the world – but instead
we see a reflection of the world of modern-day public universities
along with all their stereotypes (and for good reason)
“Puan” (the name of the famous university that lends the film its title
a key component of Argentina’s student and revolutionary movements) is also a perfect representation of what life is
its struggles and the sheer disarray of it all
the movie talks about idealism and the loss thereof
about the neoliberal meanderings of society
the reason why we decide to devote our time to a job or a task (besides money)
what separates and unites us with one another
the distance and the coherence between thought and action
and the surprises that life sometimes has in store for us
The directors’ form of narrating this is funny and inventive
One of their trump cards lies in their sense of humour
and observations of local customs and manners
and in the entertaining and sometimes pathetic or disconcerting situations that they depict
through which they get the portrayal of their characters spot on – especially the predicaments involving Sujarchuck (such as when he seizes the opportunity to show off his intellectual German during the ceremony to pay tribute to the late professor
This tragicomic vibe courses through the film
it also reveals its political overtones and its intimate side more explicitly
with no artificiality or flashy affectation
The relationship between the lead duo is also depicted as a very human one
from their clashes to their ability to empathise with others
and Sbaraglia and Subiotto are magnificent in their performative sparring: they make their characters believable
and their behaviour and blunders are very relatable
an entertaining and politically committed film that works as a comedy
It may be the chronicle of a defeat and the dignity that one can find within it
but it also entails a bittersweet reflection on the meaning and the crisis of ideals
Puan is a co-production between Argentina, Italy, Germany, France and Brazil, staged by Pasto Cine, Pucara Cine, Kino Produzioni, Pandora Filmproduktion, Atelier de Production and Bubbles Project, alongside US outfit Infinity Hill. Its international sales are overseen by Luxbox

“When the state is slow or unresponsive
citizens resort to social media to seek justice; no viral
