National Same 2 Chinese nationals caught taking photographs near Pyeongtaek US military base again
Two Chinese nationals were caught taking photographs near a US military base in Pyeongtaek
just two days after being questioned and released for the same activity
the pair had been stopped for photographing military facilities and aircraft near Osan Air Base
police had said there was no evidence of “anti-state activity” and released them without charges
The same decision was made when the duo were caught taking photographs again Wednesday
as the photographs they took showed aircraft in flight
According to the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency
Wednesday that the two were photographing aircraft near Osan Air Base
Officers were dispatched and detained the two on suspicion of violating the Military Facility Protection Act
Authorities confirmed that the individuals were the same ones involved in Monday’s incident
After an eight-hour joint investigation with the National Intelligence Service and the Defense Counterintelligence Command
again citing a lack of evidence of anti-state activity
Officials declined to provide further details

Pyeongtaek Port in Gyeonggi Province is a forward base for Korean automobile exports
It handles one-third of the exported vehicles
the six-lane port road here was unusually quiet
It was difficult to find the vitality of the busy port
with one or two large vehicles full of vehicles passing intermittently
Vehicles are scattered in places and gaps between export vehicles have increased noticeably
dozens of trailers were parked on the shoulder of the road about 800m from Pyeongtaek International Motor Pier to Kia Motors Pier
"The site is in a very difficult situation due to US President Donald Trump's tariff issue
and political instability." An official who has been working as a dock operator for 15 years at Pyeongtaek Port said
"The first thing that appears when exports decrease is empty docks and empty yards," adding
"It seems that everything is out because there is no goods on the surface
Business districts around the port were also hit hard
A merchant who runs a restaurant near the Poseung Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek said
"As the number of people going to work decreased
the number of customers was cut off," adding
is South Korea's largest automobile export market
total automobile exports amounted to $70.8 billion
of which $34.7 billion was exported to the United States
Hyundai Motor and Kia account for 42% of U.S
which is lower than major competitors such as Ford (101%)
IBK Economic Research Institute and other specialized institutions predicted that the 25% tariff would reduce Korea's exports to the U.S
by $6.5 billion and reduce the operating profit of finished cars by about 10 trillion won
since 25% tariffs were imposed on the 3rd of last month
Other export items are also showing signs of slowing exports to the U.S
considered the main export item to the U.S.
with exports falling 22.6% and semiconductors falling 31.0% year-on-year
Due to the growing uncertainty in the global export market due to the U.S.-origin tariff bomb
eight of the 15 major export items last month saw their exports decline year-on-year
which have the third-largest export volume after automobiles and semiconductors
followed by petroleum products and petrochemicals
are serving as a support for overall exports
Exports of semiconductors reached $11.67 billion last month
While fixed prices of DRAM memory (DDR4) have rebounded for the first time in 12 months since April last year
it recorded the largest export performance in April as exports of high value-added memory such as high bandwidth memory (HBM) were strong
it is unclear whether semiconductor exports will continue this trend
This is because the Trump administration continues to express its willingness to impose tariffs on semiconductors by item
In accordance with Article 232 of the Trade Expansion Act
government has been investigating semiconductor supply chains since the 1st of last month
This is a preliminary step for the imposition of tariffs by items
which could result in new tariffs or trade restrictions
which will end within 270 days as of April 1
mainly by demanding companies ahead of the U.S
but uncertainties in exports in the mid- to long-term have increased."

National Two Chinese nationals caught filming near US military base in Pyeongtaek
Two Chinese nationals were caught filming near a US military facility in Pyeongtaek on Monday
a month after two other Chinese citizens were found photographing aircraft near an air base in Suwon
The security investigation division of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency said it booked the two without detention on suspicion of violating the Military Facility Protection Act
The suspects took unauthorized photographs near Osan Air Base
They reportedly photographed parts of the base and military aircraft using a camera
Details about the equipment used or the specific facilities captured were not disclosed
Police said they investigated the case in cooperation with the National Intelligence Service and the Defense Counterintelligence Command
that there was no indication of anti-state activities
without further elaborating for “security” grounds
two Chinese teenagers were caught taking photos of aircraft taking off and landing near the Suwon Air Base using DSLR cameras and smartphones
They were also found to have taken thousands of photographs at four military facilities
including the US base in Pyeongtaek and an air base in Cheongju
After police obtained testimony that one of the teenagers’ fathers is an official with China’s Public Security Bureau
Digital Daily revealed that Samsung recently notified key suppliers about the postponement of equipment and infrastructure orders for both facilities
While Samsung has not officially confirmed the construction timeline
insiders say both plants were originally slated to break ground in the second half of this year
Market speculation surrounding these projects has been rife
Digital Daily reported that some predict part of the P4 line
Others suggest the expansion could be delayed altogether due to the downturn in memory semiconductor demand
the Pyeongtaek P4 line—designed as the world’s largest semiconductor production facility—was expected to handle both memory and foundry production
delaying related equipment and infrastructure orders as well
The company had planned to invest $44 billion to build two semiconductor plants and an advanced packaging R&D center
Samsung was set to receive $6.4 billion in U.S
Although construction on the first plant is underway after multiple delays
with completion targeted for 2026 and advanced sub-5nm processes in development
Digital Daily reported that the start of construction for the second plant
a representative from Samsung Electronics stated that the company is unable to provide an official update on its production line operations
but it may adjust plant construction plans in response to fluctuations in demand

Samsung Electronics has reportedly initiated a large-scale personnel reshuffle
reallocating engineers to its next-generation semiconductor hub in Pyeongtaek
Korean media suggest the reshuffle was directed by Young-hyun Jun
EVP and head of Samsung's Device Solutions (DS) division
The reassignment aims to boost yield rates in advanced DRAM processes and address Samsung's lag in high-bandwidth memory (HBM)
a key initiative under Jun's leadership to revitalize the semiconductor division
South Korea's SBS reported that over 2,000 engineers from Samsung's Giheung and Hwaseong campuses have been relocated to Pyeongtaek
aims to position engineers closer to the production base
enhancing process management and product quality
The reassignment focuses on engineers specializing in optimizing yield rates during the transition from development to mass production
Samsung is reportedly accelerating equipment procurement for its Pyeongtaek P4 facility
expected to begin mass production of sixth-generation 10nm-class DRAM (1c DRAM)
Samsung struggles to meet Nvidia's HBM standards
Samsung's HBM3E reportedly fails to meet industry standards
likely excluding it from Nvidia's supply chain this year
Wccftech reported on December 11 that Samsung failed to meet Nvidia's HBM standards
issuing a rare apology while expressing optimism for a breakthrough
Korea Daily News reported that Samsung admitted it is "highly unlikely" to meet Nvidia's requirements for 8-layer and 12-layer HBM3E chips this year but remains optimistic for next year
Samsung has reportedly struggled to gain Nvidia's trust as SK Hynix raises the bar with advanced technologies like mass reflow molded underfill (MR-MUF)
Reuters reported on March 12 that Samsung's reliance on non-conductive film (NCF) technology has contributed to production issues and failure to meet Nvidia's HBM3 standards
Money DJ reported that Samsung recently ordered MUF-specific chip manufacturing equipment
Analysts noted that Samsung's HBM3 yield rates were 10-20% in March
Samsung's reassignment of 2,000 engineers to Pyeongtaek is likely aimed at addressing HBM3 yield issues and narrowing the gap with SK Hynix
SK Hynix's 3nm HBM4 strategy widens gap with Samsung
Korean media indicate Samsung's personnel reshuffle is designed to boost 1c DRAM yield rates
vital for its sixth-generation HBM4 core die
and to close the gap in the competitive HBM market
SK Hynix and Micron have opted for 1b DRAM (fifth-generation 10nm-class) in their HBM4 products
Experts suggest Samsung sees improving 1c DRAM yields as crucial to overcoming its HBM market challenges
KED Global's latest report suggests that SK Hynix will shift to a 3nm process for HBM4 production in late 2025
reported that SK Hynix's adoption of TSMC's 3nm technology is a strategic response to Samsung's plan to use a 4nm process for HBM4 production
HBM chips rely on a base die at the bottom
connecting to a GPU as its "brain." A 3nm base die could boost performance by 20-30% compared to a 5nm die in HBM4 chips
SK Hynix's move to a 3nm process aligns with its strategy to deepen ties with US Big Tech
while reducing reliance on China amid US export restrictions
The 3nm base die for HBM4 is expected to widen SK Hynix's lead over Samsung
which plans to use a 4nm process for its sixth-generation HBM4 chips
Samsung is reportedly exploring 3nm production for HBM4 dies
Samsung restructures leadership amid HBM4 challenges
Samsung's strategy now centers on early HBM4 mass production and sub-2nm foundry solutions
KED Global previously reported that Samsung may cut executive roles and restructure semiconductor operations as it lags behind SK Hynix and Micron in advanced memory during the AI boom
Yonhap News and TrendForce report that Samsung informed senior executives of dismissals
initiating its year-end reshuffle early on November 27
say Samsung's declining DRAM competitiveness necessitates restructuring
South Korea — A quiet evening at home took a chaotic turn for U.S
Army veteran Arthur Chavarria when his wife
but instead slipped on a pair of flip-flops and ran toward smoke rising from an old house in Seokgeun village near Camp Humphreys
“I heard a woman screaming — a really loud
desperate scream,” he told Stars and Stripes by phone Wednesday
What happened next earned the couple a commendation from the Pyeongtaek Fire Department and praise from Fire Chief Kang Bong-ju
“We would like to express our gratitude to Mr
Chavarria for quickly reporting the fire and rescuing a precious life,” Kang said at Wednesday’s commendation ceremony
‘There’s probably somebody in there if she’s going back inside,’ ” he said
Chavarria followed her in and quickly realized she was alone
attempting to fight the flames with a garden hose
wanting me to help her put out the fire,” he said
“She could’ve passed out or worse,” he added
“I understand — she was about to lose everything
he guided her to a side door that he forced open and the two escaped safely
who arrived quickly and contained the blaze by early morning
The woman wasn’t injured but inhaled smoke and declined a hospital visit
Officials suspect the blaze started in an overheated wood boiler in the traditional Korean-style house
where the tile roof and wood frame contributed to the quick spread of flames
Kim was stunned by the sight of her husband entering the burning home
“I was so shocked I couldn’t even think of doing anything,” she said
Seeing him emerge with the woman brought her relief and pride
“If my husband had come out a little later
he would have died with the grandmother in that house,” Kim said
“Life and death depend on what an individual does in a moment.”
who said he is an Army veteran but declined to discuss the details of his service
“This is a pretty normal thing to do,” he said
He said he hopes people will check in on elderly family members
“A lot of these houses are really old,” he said
“I hope people take this as a reminder to check on their parents and grandparents
and make sure their fire safety is up to date.”

South Korea has found rising attempts to disguise foreign products as Korean exports
President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs
The Korea Customs Service said it has found 29.5 billion won ($20.81 million) worth of country-of-origin violations from the first quarter
with U.S.-bound shipments accounting for 97% of the total
after a special probe last month.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
That compared to a total of 34.8 billion won worth of violations for all of 2024
among which U.S.-bound shipments accounted for 62%
Trump has introduced big tariffs on various products and countries that started to come into force in March
South Korean officials have said there could be a rise in attempts by foreign companies
as a bypass to avoid tariffs and regulations
Trump slapped 25% tariffs on South Korea this month
which were later suspended for three months
now imposes 145% tariffs on China after back-and-forth retaliatory actions
which economists say have severed trade between the world's two biggest economies
Monday's findings include 3.3 billion won worth of cathode materials used for batteries
imported from China and shipped to the U.S
with South Korea falsely marked as the country of origin
to avoid already-high tariffs in January even before Trump's tariffs took effect
19.3 billion won worth of surveillance cameras were imported from China in parts and reassembled in South Korea to bypass U.S
restrictions on Chinese communication devices
The Korea Customs Service has launched a special task force to prevent illegal export attempts and now plans to come up with more specific response measures to protect domestic companies

The decision to relocate the branch to Pyeongtaek is driven by the growing trend of semiconductor production adopting cluster-based models
A notable example is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co
Samsung Electronics’ branch was based in Dongtan
benefiting from its central location within Samsung’s semiconductor belt
which includes Giheung and Hwaseong facilities
Industry insiders expect Samsung to move other divisions to Pyeongtaek following the relocation of the global infrastructure branch
as the company seeks to make Pyeongtaek the core of its integrated semiconductor ecosystem
spans approximately 2.89 million square meters
making it the world’s largest semiconductor facility
The Pyeongtaek campus is divided into P1 and P2 for memory production
including 3-nanometer gate-all-around (GAA) technology
which is under construction to produce cutting-edge NAND and DRAM chips
Samsung’s production strategy will be a key focus at its global strategy meetings
Industry insiders expect the discussions to address strategies for countering anticipated memory price declines
increasing high-profit high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production
reinforcing Samsung’s proprietary foundry strategy
and evaluating local production options in light of U.S
The semiconductor industry expects DRAM and other memory prices to peak this year and sharply decline in 2025
senior vice president at market tracker TrendForce
projected that while the expanded HBM production by Samsung
had initially suggested an upward trend in DRAM prices
and prices are now expected to drop significantly in the first half of next year
Samsung is expected to focus on premium products and double its HBM production
Changes in its foundry strategy are also anticipated
with an increased focus on mid-range 5-nanometer and early 7-nanometer processes to improve profitability
alongside continued emphasis on next-generation 2-nanometer advanced processes

Facing increased market demand and the ongoing recovery of the memory industry, a report from Korean media outlet ETNews has reported that Samsung has confirmed its investment plan for the 6th-Generation DRAM production line at the Pyeongtaek P4 plant
with the goal of starting mass production in June 2025
known as ‘1c ,’ is a next-generation DRAM utilizing 10nm-class technology
Despite it is said to be a product that has not yet been commercialized in the global semiconductor industry
both Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are already preparing for mass production
Samsung’s Pyeongtaek P4 is a comprehensive semiconductor production center
Samsung Electronics reportedly planned to begin construction on the P4 facility in 2022 and commence operations this year
even after completing the P4 building and essential infrastructure like electricity and water
the company did not proceed with building a production line
Due the downturn in the semiconductor market
Samsung adopted a downsizing strategy by scaling back its existing facilities
As the semiconductor market started to recover in the second half of last year
Samsung Electronics shifted towards expansion and investment by mid-year
The company began installing NAND flash equipment in the previously unused P4 facility and has now confirmed its investment in 1c DRAM production
As per ETNews
Samsung plans to initiate 1c DRAM production by the end of this year
The company is said to be considering launching HBM4 using 1c DRAM in the second half of 2025
Given that HBM consumes significantly more DRAM than traditional memory
it is speculated by the report that Samsung’s construction of the 1c DRAM production line at the Pyeongtaek P4 plant may also be in preparation for HBM4
As per TrendForce’s latest report on the memory industry
it’s revealed that DRAM and NAND Flash revenues are expected to see significant increases of 75% and 77%
and the rise of high-value products like HBM
TrendForce also reports that Samsung’s P4L facility will be the key site for expanding memory capacity starting in 2025
Equipment installation for DRAM is expected to begin in mid-2025
with mass production of 1c nanometer DRAM slated to commence in 2026

Service members and their families at Camp Humphreys and Osan Air Base can enjoy an easy
refreshing winter hike at the nearby Maansan Trail in Pyeongtaek
The trail is about 1½ miles out and back with an elevation gain of 295 feet
there are bathrooms and a cafe called Bee & Honey
The hike starts on a staircase leading into the wooded trail
The rest is on a gradual slope with only a couple of areas that felt a little steeper
small signs start dotting the path with poems written on them in Korean and English
Artwork has also been placed throughout the trail
There are also benches scattered throughout the trail and also some exercise equipment
This is great if you decide you want to hang around the area longer instead of just doing the hike straight through
Most of the trail is surrounded by trees but there are clearings that open onto a view of the expansive Anseongcheon River
The trail is marked with signs that show the way and guide you back to the trailhead
This is hike suitable for children old enough to walk but is not recommended for strollers
the Maansan Trail is a great time and worth adding to your list of completed hikes
Directions: About a 30-minute drive from Camp Humphreys and Osan Air Base
Food: The Bee & Honey cafe near the trail’s entrance offers an assortment of hot and cold beverages
Information: A small lot near the entrance offers free parking
South Korea — A group of North Korean defectors were puzzled by rows of blue squares projected onto a screen during a recent English class in this city 40 miles south of Seoul
“What is this?” one of the eight defector-students asked of the “Jeopardy”-style game designed to quiz them on their vocabulary
took a few minutes to explain the rules to her befuddled students
who’d never heard of the classic American gameshow
“Just choose a square,” she told the North Koreans
some of whom were still confused about the rules
The free English classes for North Korean defectors
known as the Preparing Refugees in English Project
a senior at Humphreys High School and the daughter of a retired soldier living on base
Volunteers from Camp Humphreys teach the two- to three-hour classes once per week to up to 15 defectors at the YMCA in Pyeongtaek
Many of the students cite their lackluster proficiency in English as a barrier in school or finding work
“Some of the students want to learn how to have basic conversations,” she told Stars and Stripes at the center last month
Others want to learn about the United States because they were forcibly taught in North Korea to view Americans as “the enemy.”
Around 34,100 North Koreans have defected to the South since 1998
the South’s Ministry of Unification reported in June
More than 100 North Koreans have crossed the inter-Korean border so far this year
provides after-school programs and social services to roughly 1,200 defectors and their children living in and around the city that also hosts America’s largest overseas military base
branch supervisor Heoh Yong-rim said in a Sept
The Y is a “safe space for North Korean defectors,” and those attending the English classes also learn about American culture
Reynolds teamed with the Y to organize a trip for defectors to tour Humphreys and join Fourth of July festivities inside the base this year
Defectors interviewed for this report asked to be identified only by their surname due to safety concerns for themselves and family members still in North Korea
defected in 2020 and has been taking the English classes for two months in preparation for college
“It’s been somewhat difficult living in South Korea because people use a lot of English here,” Park
who plans to study business administration next year
“The conversations haven’t always been smooth.”
employment and monetary support by the South Korean government
said they were satisfied with living in the South
according to a survey of 2,500 defectors in 2023 by the Korea Hana Foundation
a nonprofit founded by the Ministry of Unification
But many defectors say they have difficulty adjusting to their new life
According to a yearlong survey released in December by the Seoul Institute
69.4% of defectors living in Seoul said they have struggled to provide for themselves
Nearly 60% reported they could only afford monthly expenses of less than $730
and 37% say they still receive some sort of government financial aid
a North Korean defector living in Seoul stole a bus and attempted to cross into North Korea at a bridge border crossing
Apprehended by border guards and questioned by police
he said he had difficulty making a living in the South
“I think it’s hard for them to get accustomed to South Korean culture,” Heoh said
“A lot of North Koreans do not want to portray themselves as North Koreans
but the accent and terminology sometimes comes out while speaking.”
a 57-year-old apartment management administrator who has been living in the South for a decade
said he attends the Y classes because “learning English is fun.”
He hopes to use his newfound knowledge to converse with foreigners in Pyeongtaek and visit the United States or Canada someday
but I’m even more comfortable listening and understanding words in English now.”
Little Greece stands amid the hustle and bustle surrounding Camp Humphreys
A 10-minute walk from Humphreys’ walk-in gate
this place with truly genuine flavors and a warm atmosphere is a must stop for soldiers and locals seeking a taste of Greece
presented just so with a lightly fried and honey-covered sesame-crusted feta
The contrasting textures of the crunchy sesame and creaminess of the salty feta were just pure harmony
The honey brought out the richness in the cheese such that each bite was better than the previous
a true classic and arguably the heart of Greek cuisine
golden fries and a refreshing dollop of tzatziki
The pork was flavorful and spiced just right
the perfect accompaniment to the rich pork and warm pita
The pickled onions and seasoned fries added layers of flavor and texture to each bite - incredibly impressive for such a small eatery
a traditional Greek dessert made with chocolate and recognized by its fudgy texture with crunchy bits
This rich chocolate log was sweet and decadent but somehow light
just right for closing out the meal with a sweet touch but not overindulging
It’s the textural contrast - smooth chocolate with crunchy biscuit bits - that whets my appetite further
Little Greece also features an excellent choice of wines
selected to perfectly complement each dish
It stocks Greek wines and popular international labels so that every diner can get a taste of something new or taste familiar flavors
Little Greece offers the warmth of a friendly atmosphere
and the blue and white decor echoes the Greek islands
the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion with friends and family
Prices: Main dishes cost between 18,000 won and 30,000 won
Directions: A 10-minute walk from Camp Humphreys’ walk-in gate
One of my favorite memories of growing up in South Carolina was of summer visits with my parents and brothers to my grandparents’ house in the country
The summer was full of nothing but fun and adventure
Not long ago I was walking along Anjeong Rodeo Street near Camp Humphreys craving Southern cuisine and a taste of home when I stumbled on Delmar Boiling Crab
I haven’t had Cajun seafood in almost two years
The restaurant was very easy to find; it’s a straight shot through the Millett Gate on Anjeong
“Welcome to Delmar’s!” The staff was helpful
and the inside of the restaurant was very spacious and classy
There was mood lighting and plenty of seating
Menus are available in Korean and English and are very easy to understand
The options start with butter for those who can’t handle the heat
progress to mild for those who want just a little and
I could smell all of the delicious seasoning in it
The seafood boil was amazing; each bit was an explosion of flavor
I can’t wait to go back to get that reminder of home

Samsung Electronics is reportedly finalizing investment plans for the first production line at its Pyeongtaek Plant 4 (P4) facility in South Korea
rebranding it to focus on mass-producing advanced NAND flash and DRAM
Surging rice prices in Japan have opened a rare window of opportunity for South Korean producers to export the staple food to the country
Japan imported South Korean rice for the first time since 1999 this month as soaring prices of domestic grain fueled demand for foreign products despite heavy tariffs
a South Korean industry official said Monday.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
The imports were made via the Japan office of South Korea’s National Agricultural Cooperative Federation
which said it brought in and sold 2 tons of Korean rice online and at local supermarkets this month
has been designated as an unsold management area again for the first time in four years and 10 months
the government came up with a plan to supplement the construction industry
which focuses on resolving unsold housing in local areas
but Pyeongtaek cannot receive government support
This is because unsold houses in the Seoul metropolitan area have been excluded from the government's support
According to data from the Housing and Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG) on the 7th
Pyeongtaek has recently been newly designated as an unsold management area
HUG designates unsold management areas among cities
and districts where the number of unsold households is more than 1,000 and "the number of unsold households compared to the number of multi-family housing inventories" is more than 2%
The target is areas where the growth rate of unsold housing is fast
areas where unsold housing does not continue to be resolved
and places where there is a risk of new unsold housing
If it is included in the unsold management area
HUG guarantee screening will be strengthened
making it difficult for implementers to raise funds
Pyeongtaek was excluded in June 2020 when the warmth of the real estate boom spread to the outskirts of Gyeonggi Province and the provinces after being unable to escape from the unsold management area for nearly two years since May 2018
it became a management area again in 10 months in April
The number of unsold houses in Pyeongtaek was only 361 in January last year
but it increased 18 times in a year to 6,438 in January this year
This is equivalent to 42.5% of all unsold apartments in Gyeonggi-do
and 4 out of 10 unsold apartments in Gyeonggi-do are in Pyeongtaek
the total number of unsold houses in Gyeonggi-do increased by 2,181 units
with 2,367 unsold houses increasing in Pyeongtaek
The semiconductor industry is cited as the main reason for the surge in unsold apartments in Pyeongtaek
Due to the delay in the construction of Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek Campus plant
the complexes that applied for subscription between November and December last year received disastrous report cards
Only 94 households applied for 864 households when the first and second priority subscriptions for apartments A near the general industrial complex in Brain City
Apartment B also recruited 1933 households during the first and second priority subscriptions
and Yangju (730 households) have many unsold houses after Pyeongtaek
Icheon has been designated as an unsold management area for eight consecutive months since August last year
There are a total of five newly designated unsold management areas: Pyeongtaek and Icheon in the metropolitan area
Unsold houses in the Seoul metropolitan area are not eligible for government support
a tax exemption that excludes them from the number of houses is applied
but this applies only to the non-metropolitan area
Houses in the Seoul metropolitan area are also excluded from the purchase of unsold houses by the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) or CR REITs (corporate restructuring real estate investment company)
you can get a 0.2% reduction in the interest rate on stepping-stone loans
but this also excludes the metropolitan area
The construction industry is calling for the expansion of areas subject to special taxation from "non-metropolitan areas" to "regions other than Seoul" in consideration of the increase in unsold apartments in the metropolitan area

a staple of any list of the world’s best-loved food
Just five minutes from Osan Air Base’s walk-in gate
this rustic-veneered restaurant features such a wide selection of appetizers and pastas with tomato or creamy sauces that deciding on your choice can be overwhelming
My party’s dinner started with an appetizer of fried mushrooms (15,000 won

The soft texture of the mushrooms combined with the fresh sauce made it a pleasant opener
The chicken alfredo linguine (15,000 won) arrived with garlic buttered bread on the side
light on the chicken but generous on the pasta
We also ordered bacon-and-mushroom spicy tomato spaghetti (14,000 won) and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake popular across western Japan
I got to sample this delicious dish when I visited Tokyo a while back
One of my favorite spots in Pyeongtaek recently closed
so armed with a craving for this delightful Japanese treat
The hole-in-the-wall eatery is hidden amongst the area’s tall buildings but has been open since 2014 and is quite popular for serving up Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki
with customers sometimes having to wait a while for a seat
and two customers were enjoying the okonomiyaki with a draft beer at the end of the bar counter
After being motioned by the staff to take a seat
I went for the tonpeiyaki for 15000 won (about $11.58)
tonpeiyaki is a classic Osaka appetizer consisting of a rolled-up egg pancake with pork topped with okonomiyaki sauce
so I opted for tonpeiyaki as a main instead
the skillful cook started to make tonpeiyaki on a hot pan right in front of me
The fun part of the eatery is that you get to see how your okonomiyaki is prepared
their uniforms and the vibe of the eatery made me almost feel like I’m back on vacation in Japan
What sets this Japanese pancake place from others is owner Kim Byeong-Seok’s unique experience
the birthplace of okonomiyaki and even took a course hosted by food company Otafuku
which is known for its production of the rich brown sauce that glazes the top of the savory pancakes
you’ll see the Otafuku certificate of completion Kim received
which is not something the company awards to foreigners usually
Kim had masterfully created my mouth-watering pancake covered with thick and juicy pork
The hot pan was placed in front of me and I could slowly begin to devour each piping-hot morsel
The great thing about okomiyaki here is the opportunity to customize the ingredients
Okozi’s menu lets you choose five ingredients for the Hiroshima okonomiyaki order including seafood
cheese and veggies at 1000 or 2000 extra won
The menu includes other items like salmon steak
I was relieved to have found a place to get my okonomiyaki fix in Pyeongtaek
I will definitely return again to try other dishes and beer

The variety of sweet and savory goods at Cake Nara
makes the drive from Camp Humphreys and Osan Air Base worth the effort
“Nara” is a Korean word for “country,” so the bakery sometimes is referred to as Cake Country
But whatever you choose to call this place
you might soon be calling it your favorite bakery in town
Inside you’ll find long tables stocked with baked goods
with baskets and tongs ready nearby for you to gather your selection
Cakes are available in refrigerated display cases and on the opposite side of the room is a counter with goods for sale like juice
you’ll notice the staff consistently walking through the bakery keeping everything neat and restocking the items
You’ll also hear the sound of bakers opening ovens and carts laden with pastries being rolled around in the kitchen
The names of the baked goods are in Korean
but I was able to use a translation app to identify the items
My first choice was a Korean-style vegetable croquette
a doughnut-shaped savory pastry with a vegetable filling
slightly sweet bread held a fresh filling with an oniony tang
but not recommended if you don’t like onion
The crust lacked a distinctive flavor but added a nice crunch to the custard filling
The bakery is close enough to the bases to make a morning run for breakfast pastry a tempting choice
Prices: The vegetable croquette was 2,700 won
