Three cities in the eastern part of Jeollanam-do
united to overcome the industrial crisis in the Gwangyang Bay area
The three cities adopted a joint declaration through an administrative council meeting held at the Citizens Hall of Gwangyang City Hall on the 30th and formalized solidarity and cooperation to revive the stagnant flagship industry
The declaration comes amid a structural crisis that has recently shaken the economic foundation of the Gwangyang Bay area
has played a pivotal role in the country's key industries
but the local economy is seriously hit by external factors such as global oversupply
it is a common recognition of problems in the three cities that not only the contraction of the industrial base
but also the lack of youth jobs and concerns about population outflows are becoming a reality
The mayors who attended the meeting emphasized that there is a limit to individual cities' handling of the crisis
and that regional cooperation is the only solution for the survival of the Gwangyang Bay area
rather than simply staying in symbolic solidarity
we decided to work together to link practical policies to respond to industrial crises and increase future responsiveness
the crisis in the petrochemical industry in Yeosu will be promoted together so that it can be designated as a preemptive response area at the national level
and the entire Gwangyang Bay area will be designated as a special industrial crisis response area
the government will focus its administrative capabilities on expanding the job base and improving settlement conditions so that young people can stay in the region
It also plans to ease regulations that hinder corporate attraction and increase urban competitiveness by expanding wide-area transportation networks and linking medical and tourism infrastructure
they agreed on the urgent need for a response strategy to strengthen the industrial base and living base at the same time due to concerns that the improvement of the wide-area transportation system
such as the expansion of the railway network
could accelerate and the outflow of population to the metropolitan area
Suncheon Mayor Roh Kwan-kyu proposed a new cooperative model beyond the level of joint response
"This joint declaration goes beyond simple administrative cooperation and is the starting point for Yeosu
Suncheon and Gwangyang to unite as one economic alliance," he said
it should develop into a special government that can deal with industrial policy
"We will cooperate with local chambers of commerce
and the central government so that this initiative can lead to concrete institutionalization," he stressed

Jogyesan Provincial Park is known as one of top 100 famous mountains of South Korea
The park is home to two significant temples that have been preserved for over 1,000 years

The trail leading to these ancient temples is peaceful and easy to navigate
you can take a moment to dip your feet into the refreshing waters of the cool stream for some relaxation
The harmonious scene of the majestic forests

Songgwangsa Temple was built in the late Silla period during the 10th century and is one of the three principal Buddhist temples in Korea
This temple stands as the center of Korean Buddhist history as it has produced 16 National Masters

Transport to Joseon Dynasty at Nakan Eupseong Folk Village
Nakan Eupseong Folk Village is my favorite place among all the wonderful destinations in Suncheon City
Exploring this village makes me feel like I’ve traveled in a time machine to the Joseon Dynasty 600 years ago
The walled town was built during the late Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasty to defend the village against frequent invasions by Japanese pirates
This is neither a theme park nor movie set
but an authentic folk village that has existed and preserved its original form to present day
Unlike Hanok villages where aristocrats lived in tile-roofed houses
Nakan Eupseong Folk Village retains a cluster of the thatched-roof houses where commoners lived
This is truly a peaceful place preserving the indigenous values of old Korea as if time stopped here hundreds of years ago
Suncheon locals live in the thatched-roof houses in Nakan Eupseong Folk Village
While wandering through this picturesque village
enjoy your time as a time traveler to old Korea
Ticket: Children 1,500 won / Teens 2,500 won / Adults 4,000 won
Visitors can experience the lifestyle and culture of common people in the Joseon era through various experience programs
Most of the activities are run by locals and free of charge
It’s highly recommended to visit during the weekends if you’re interested in enjoying experience programs
folk festivals and watching traditional performances
local staff may cancel programs earlier if there aren’t enough visitors
If you want to create a memorable experience in Suncheon
I strongly recommend staying overnight at this folk village
Many locals in the village run homestays where they rent out their own houses to tourists
you can enjoy a garden BBQ party and take a nighttime stroll to stargaze and experience the folk village on your own
This place provides spacious and clean beds while most others run by locals offer only flat blankets instead of beds
it’s unmanned with a self-check-in and check-out system for more privacy
It’s a bit pricier compared to other accommodations around the village
but definitely worth it for its cleanliness
Price: 100,000 won to 170,000 won for two to five people
Capture the best view at the top of the town wall
To get a panoramic view of the entire village
climb up to the southwestern part of the fortress wall
Walking through the fortress usually takes only 10-20 minutes
Whether you visit in the morning or at sunset
you can find one of the most distinctive sceneries in Korea here
so make sure to capture the moment with a photo
has started to discover the next generation of webtoon talents targeting the global market
Suncheon City began its "webtoon start-up" process in earnest from the 15th and started its first talent training project as a cultural city in Korea
The "Webtoon Startup" course is a representative creative incubation program organized by Suncheon City
which was selected as the country's first cultural city in the field of cultural contents last year
Fourteen trainees selected from various regions
will participate and receive 12 training sessions for a total of four weeks from 15th to May 9th
centered on Suncheon Global Webtoon Center
The contents of the training consist of a practical curriculum
and current expert mentors plan to further enhance the creative ability of trainees by providing 1:1 feedback and customized advice
excellent trainees who have completed this course will be given the opportunity to participate in the "Webtoon Boot Camp Pro Writer's Team," which is scheduled to open in the second half of the year
to support actual production of works and entry into global platforms
it will take the lead in fostering professional manpower and supporting youth employment by conducting in-depth courses for each specialized field such as conti
At the orientation held on the first day of the training
we had time to greet the instructors and trainees and enhance their understanding of the entire curriculum and the webtoon industry
"I think I can take a step closer to my dream of becoming a webtoon artist with a field-oriented curriculum and guidance from professional instructors."
An official from an anchor company that runs this program said
"As it is the first meaningful project since moving to Suncheon
I hope the participants will achieve practical results."
"The most important thing to leap into a cultural industrial city is talent," adding
"We will actively support local and prospective creators to grow together through cultural city projects and to provide practical benefits to both companies and creators."

As Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea officially pledged to establish a national medical school in Jeollanam-do
there are growing calls for the integration of Mokpo University and Suncheon University
there are also concerns that the "two-campus system" being promoted after the integration could become an obstacle to the establishment of the national medical school
Candidate Lee Jae-myung announced his pledge in the Honam area on the 24th and promised to "establish national medical schools in Jeollanam-do
the only metropolitan local government without medical schools
where medical schools have disappeared due to the closure of Seonam University."
"The issue of Jeonnam National Medical School should have been decided on a university last year," he said
"We need to quickly decide on one and submit it to the government." This is interpreted as a statement reflecting the political demand for the establishment of a new medical school centered on a unified integrated university
and Suncheon National University immediately welcomed the plan and reaffirmed their strategy to attract national medical schools based on integrated universities in accordance with the basic agreement signed in November last year
Recognizing the reality that it is difficult to meet the government's criteria for screening the establishment of medical schools alone
the two universities agreed to launch a national university of scale and competitiveness through integration
But the problem is the operation plan of the university
Jeollanam-do Province and both universities are currently planning a "two-campus system" in which campuses and university hospitals are placed on both Mokpo University (west region) and Suncheon University (east region)
Although the plan considers balanced regional development
the Ministry of Education and politicians are known to prefer a single campus system due to efficiency
It is pointed out that as national medical schools require huge budgets and professional manpower
the operation of multiple campuses is likely to act as a burden in the process of promotion
as it is necessary to quickly and strongly foster "one national medical school" in order to revive the purpose of candidate Lee Jae-myung's pledge
most of the government-level university establishments or large-scale investments are based on a single headquarters system as a basic principle
There are also voices of concern in the community
"Integration is necessary to attract medical schools
but considering the quality of education and policy direction
a single campus-centered operation will be more realistic," a university official said
"Mokpo University and Suncheon University should be integrated
but medical schools should focus on one side."
"The policy of establishing a national medical school through an integrated university remains unchanged," but added
"We will carefully decide on specific campus deployment and operation plans
taking into account both the government's policy direction and regional reality."
Suncheon City will run a special search program to commemorate "2025 Suncheon Bay Black Crane Day" in Suncheon Bay Wetland from the 28th to March 3rd
and the city designates February 28th as "Sunman Bay Black Crane Day" every year to protect them and holds various commemorative events
Suncheon Bay is a world-class migratory bird habitat
and as a result of promoting ecological restoration
it has become a key area where about 7,600 surviving black cranes worldwide currently winter
The search distance was narrowed to 20m due to the formation of trust with black cranes
and Ramsar-gil has become a world-class search attraction
This year's Black Crane Day celebration program will be organized by the Suncheon Bay Ecotourism Council to promote the "New+Water-Dried Survey" program to spread the bird culture
Participants can observe endangered rare migratory birds in mudflats and agricultural lands with search experts and experience the Duke of Black Crane
All participants will also be provided with healthy food refreshments at the Suncheon Bay Rest Area
and reservations are available in advance through Google Form
The participation fee is 30,000 won for adults and 15,000 won for teenagers and children
Sound Exploration and Walking Exploration programs utilizing Suncheon Bay's primitive environment will also be operated
Sound Exploration' is an experience that combines barefoot walking while listening to the sounds of nature in a reed field
and is held three times a day for an hour course
The "Walking Exploration" will be held four times a day
you can experience the spectacular sight of the black cranes flying overhead with sunrise
This program is open to participants over the age of 7 and can be booked through the Suncheon Bay Wetland website on a first-come
first-served basis with 15 people per episode
Suncheon Bay is the best place to meet winter migratory birds such as black cranes closely with beautiful nature
"I hope you will wish the black cranes a healthy northward with your family in Suncheon and enjoy a warm spring search trip in the plum blossoms of Namdo."
which is designated as a World Natural Heritage site
arrested) who killed a high school girl for no reason in Suncheon
was evaluated by a criminal psychological analysis expert as "a person who shares anti-social fantasy."
a professor of criminal psychology at Kyunggi University
said on CBS radio's "Kim Hyun-jung's News Show" on the 2nd
"There are so many behaviors that don't go well with the front and back."
Regarding Park Dae-sung's claim that "I can't remember the crime because I drank about four bottles of soju," Professor Lee said
"It's hard to say that the witness is in the opposite direction
"In the case of indiscriminate crimes that say 'I should harm someone'
there are many cases where the victim is surprised and runs away," he said
"But this case had a process of attacking several times."
This means that it is difficult to see it as the act of a person who does not remember and becomes insincere
He paid particular attention to Park Dae-sung's tattoos
tattoos are not done on the neck and in the front
but Park Dae-sung intends to cause fear for viewers
"The reason why there are so many women among the victims is that people with poor defense are chosen," adding
the elderly or children can fall victim to indiscriminate murder without asking enough."
Regarding the scene of Park Dae-sung laughing immediately after the crime
"It can be interpreted as a smile that feels satisfied that 'the goal has been achieved.'
Park Dae-sung was arrested by police on charges of stabbing A (18) with a weapon several times on the street in Jeongwon-dong
The Jeonnam Police Agency held a personal information disclosure committee and decided to disclose Park Dae-sung's name
age and photo on the Jeonnam Police Agency's website for 30 days
Suncheon City will promote the "Restoration of Wetlands at the mouth of Dongcheon" project to expand Suncheon Bay's ecological and economic value to the city center
Located between Suncheon Bay Wetland and the city center
the Dongcheon Estuary is a place with well-preserved biodiversity and originality as a coastal wetland
It is an area registered as a Ramsar wetland in recognition of its ecological importance internationally
concerns over damage to the ecosystem in wetland protected areas have been continuously raised due to farming activities in some agricultural lands
Suncheon-si secured 12 billion won in state funds last year to purchase 18 hectares of Dongcheon estuary agricultural land
it has invested an additional 6 billion won to purchase the remaining agricultural land and is carrying out full-scale restoration work
in order to restore the purchased agricultural land in the river area to wetlands
the government will push for a reverse replacement project to remove the embankment and distribute seawater
it plans to restore the natural wetland environment and allow various species to inhabit
administrative procedures are underway to restore wetland protected areas to waterside parks and reservoirs without artificial facilities
It is expected to be used as a space for citizens and tourists to experience nature while preserving the ecological value of wetlands
Suncheon City's ecological restoration project has a positive effect on the local economy
During the 2023 Suncheon Bay International Garden Fair
or about 50% of the 16,000 to 18,000 black cranes
which are globally endangered species in winter
attracting attention as a tourist attraction for exploration
the average total cost per person for domestic travel as of February last year was 224,000 won
it is estimated that tourists who visited Suncheon last year spent about 314.5 billion won in the region
"We will expand the value of Suncheon Bay's primitive beauty and ecological environment to the city center through the Dongcheon Estuary Wetland Restoration Project
which connects Suncheon Bay and the city center as an ecological axis," a Suncheon city official said
"We will also contribute to revitalizing the local economy by establishing a foundation for sustainable high-quality ecotourism where nature and humans coexist."
Suncheon City has continued its efforts to preserve and restore the ecological environment by investing a total of 27 billion won in state funds to purchase 35ha of land in the Suncheon Bay Wetland and Dongcheon Estuary since the Dongcheon Estuary was designated as a wetland protection area in 2015
Some members of Suncheon City Council in Jeollanam-do recently requested the police to investigate after being exposed to illegal compounds that exploited deepfake technology
According to the Suncheon City Council on the 9th
City Council member Chung Kwang-hyun received a series of threatening e-mails on the afternoon of the 7th and 8th with nude photos of his face synthesized
It was confirmed that Chung's face was manipulated and inserted into an image that seemed to capture the naked video footage of a man and a woman
The e-mail sender introduced himself as a "detective" in an awkward sentence that seemed to have turned a translator and demanded 100,000 specific virtual currencies (worth about 150 million won)
This is a clear act of intimidation to cause financial damage as well as psychological shock to the victim
Suncheon City Council has confirmed that three male lawmakers have received similar e-mails so far
and is investigating whether there are additional cases of damage
The city council immediately asked the police to investigate and cooperated with related agencies to come up with measures to prevent a recurrence
"It was almost similar to the deepfake crimes that occurred against Busan-gu councilors in the past," adding
"The elderly who are less aware of deepfake technology may really misunderstand the composite photo
it was revealed that members of the five autonomous district councils in Gwangju received similar deepfake threatening e-mails
indicating that such crimes are spreading across the country
Three members of the Northern District Council received photos of composite nudity lying with a woman
along with threatening phrases such as "I have your legal evidence now" and "It will have an impact." Fortunately
but the sender was presumed to be an unidentified foreigner
Three male lawmakers from the Gwangsan-gu District Council received similar emails
one of which submitted a petition to the Gwangju Police Agency and asked to track down the sender
"The profile picture registered on the district council's website appears to have been used for deepfake synthesis," he said
some members of the Seo-gu and Nam-gu councils were also reported to have received e-mails containing photos of pornography and threatening phrases
no cases of damage have been reported in the Dong-gu Council so far
the Gwangju Autonomous District Council announced discussions at the level of the chairman's council to prepare countermeasures
and most of the affected lawmakers were men in their 30s and 50s
Such deepfake crimes are also occurring in local councils across the country
and each local council is closely discussing whether to prevent further damage and request a police investigation
It is pointed out that the personal information of local councilors is easily accessible on the Internet as one of the reasons such incidents are repeated
All of the affected lawmakers used profile photos published on the council's website in deepfake videos
and threatening emails were also sent to the email address on the council's website
The e-mail content has many typos and an awkward sentence structure
and the sender's name is often a foreigner's name
so the police believe that the e-mail was sent from abroad
as the IP address of the threatening e-mail has been identified as a foreign country
Amid the increasing number of crimes in which deepfake technology is abused
the fact that information from public officials is easily exposed is a point where institutional supplementation is needed
Experts point out that it is necessary not only to strengthen cybersecurity
but also to review the method of disclosing personal information on the website of public institutions
"There are circumstances that appear to have been systematically sent from overseas
and we are tracking related IP addresses and e-mail server routes," and added
"We will respond strictly to the threat case in which the Deepfake video was abused
but a personal defamation and cybercrime."

The statement that Park Dae-sung, who killed a woman in her 20s who had no idea and whose identity was disclosed in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, drank four bottles of soju at the time of the crime was confirmed to be false.
According to the Suncheon Police Station on the 6th, the police raided Park Dae-sung's store in Jeongwon-dong, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do on the 28th of last month.
At the time of the search and seizure, there were four bottles of snacks and soju, of which only two were empty.
One of the remaining two bottles was covered with a stopper, but the alcohol remained the same and the other one was not even opened.
Park Dae-sung stated on the 26th of last month that he was drunk after drinking four bottles of soju alone at the store that was closed at the time of the crime.
A police official said, "I went to the store to confirm this by stating that I drank 4 bottles of soju," and added, "As stated, I wonder if I was intoxicated at the time of the crime."
This is the point that raises doubts about Park's claim that it is a mental and physical weakness caused by intoxication.
Earlier, Park Dae-sung reportedly drank from around 9 p.m. on the 25th of last month, about 4 hours and 40 minutes before the crime.
"I can't remember because I drank four bottles of soju," he said in a warrant review (interrogation of the suspect before arrest), adding, "I don't know the victim." It is also known that he admitted the charges, but insisted that he did not remember the specific time of the crime, and told the police that he had symptoms of mental illness.
Park Dae-sung was arrested by police on charges of stabbing and killing A, who was walking on the street in Jeongwon-dong, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, at around 12:44 a.m. on the 26th of last month. Ms. A is known to have been defecated while going out to buy her father's medicine instead.
Park Dae-sung was also found to have had an interview with the police about 30 minutes before the crime. According to the police, Park Dae-sung's family reported that Park Dae-sung's extreme choice was suspected at around 12:15 a.m. on the 26th of last month. In response, the police dispatched to a restaurant run by Park Dae-sung and interviewed him, but withdrew from the scene because there was nothing unusual.
Afterwards, Park Dae-sung came out with a weapon from a store that ran a delivery restaurant, and chased Ms. A about 800 meters and committed the crime. Park Dae-sung, who fled immediately after the crime, wandered around bars and karaoke rooms for about two hours with a weapon. While kicking a parking vehicle and arguing with the owner, he was arrested by the police who chased him.
Park Dae-sung's personal information was disclosed in accordance with the "Act on Disclosure of Personal Information such as Suspects of Specific Serious Crimes."

It has been confirmed that Park Dae-sung (30), who murdered a teenage woman who had no idea about her in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, stopped by various places, including bars and karaoke rooms, with a weapon even after the crime.
Police are investigating whether Park Dae-sung has sought another target for the crime.
According to the Suncheon Police Station on the 3rd, Park Dae-sung stabbed A (18) to death on the street in Jojeong-dong at 0:44 a.m. on the 26th of last month and returned to his nearby store to change his shoes.
At the time of the crime, he was barefoot with his slippers peeled off.
He was drinking alone at the store before the crime and came out with a weapon while wearing slippers, and he chased Ms. A, who was passing by the store, and committed the crime.
Park Dae-sung, who returned to the store after the murder and changed his shoes, was found to have walked on the street with a weapon covered with clothes while drunk and entered a nearby bar.
There, he drank another bottle of soju alone, left the bar, went to a nearby karaoke room, and came back out after a while without any special circumstances.
Even after the crime, it was confirmed that Park Dae-sung visited bars and karaoke rooms with a weapon for about two hours.
Park Dae-sung, who left the karaoke room, dumped a weapon in a nearby parking lot, kicked a parking vehicle for no reason, and was arrested by police who were reported and dispatched after a dispute with the owner of the vehicle who witnessed it.
Park Dae-sung is said to state that he is drunk and cannot remember his whereabouts after the crime.

Park Dae-sung, who was controversial for killing a female teenager walking on the street with a weapon and laughing for no reason, is again posting his lips in front of the photo line, causing anger among Internet users.
At 9:30 a.m. on the 4th, Park Dae-sung, who was held in the hands of detectives at Suncheon Police Station in Jeollanam-do, stood on the photo line of the police station before getting on a convoy to be sent to the prosecution.
Covering his face with his bangs instead of a mask or hat, he repeatedly said, "I'm sorry" twice when asked by reporters, such as "Do you have anything you want to say to the victim?" and "Do you have anything to say when you're causing anger from the whole nation?"
He did not answer any questions about the allegations, such as "Do you remember the crime?" and "Did you purposely target only women?"
Park Dae-sung, who had been bowing for three minutes in the photo line, never raised his face and boarded a police convoy.
Park Dae-sung repeatedly said "I'm sorry" at the photo line, but looked as if the corners of his mouth were raised.
Netizens who watched it on the news responded through comments and social network service (SNS) posts, saying, "You're smiling again," "You don't look sorry," and "You seem to have seen a devil."
Immediately after the crime, Park Dae-sung caused public anger with his smiling face captured on CCTV and his bright expression of mugshot photos released by police along with personal information.
Meanwhile, Park Dae-sung is accused of stabbing A (18) who was walking on the street with a weapon several times at 00:44 on the 26th of last month in Jeongwon-dong, Suncheon, Jeollanam-do.
While drinking alone at a store that runs a delivery restaurant, he came out with a weapon, and he chased Ms. A, who had no idea, about 800 meters away and committed the crime.
Police investigating released photos of Park Dae-sung's personal and mugshot face on the website of the Jeonnam Police Agency on the 30th of last month in consideration of Sudan's cruelty, the people's right to know, and serious damage.
While the identity of Park Dae-sung (30), who approached an ignorant teenage girl and killed her with a weapon, was revealed, Park's acquaintance explained, "I have shown a violent tendency when I drink alcohol."
According to JTBC on the 30th, an acquaintance of Park, who murdered a high school girl in Suncheon, said about him, "When I drink, my eyes and everything change," and "I become a little aggressive."
"When I drink alcohol, I always get into disputes with people," he added.
In particular, it was found that Park recently broke up with her girlfriend and the number of times she drank increased as the store she ran was not doing well.
Park committed the crime on the 26th of last month after chasing a female student who was passing by the store he ran after drinking alone.
In addition, CCTV footage showing Park running barefoot 13 minutes after killing a high school girl was released, causing further public anger when it was revealed that Park was smiling broadly with the corners of her mouth raised.
The deceased high school girl reportedly went to buy medicine instead of her sick father and was devastated.
Park is said to have committed the crime by bringing a weapon from the store he runs in advance.
Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Police Agency held a review committee on personal information disclosure on the afternoon of the 30th and decided to disclose Park's personal information.
Park's personal information will be released on the Jeonnam National Police Agency's website for 30 days until Oct. 29.
Text description provided by the architects. Suncheon Art Platform: The Hidden Cloister - The Suncheon Art Platform, built as part of the vision to rejuvenate the old city, strives to restore a sense of harmony and a moment of pause in its dense urban context. It accomplishes this by carving out an open-to-the-sky square that evokes the experience of a psychological 'void' and echoes the courtyard typology of medieval Korean architecture.
The intervention creates a seamless connection between the historic city and the river, making it a public threshold to approach the old city. It also acknowledges the necessity for green spaces in urban contexts by providing space for dense plantations on site, emphasizing the importance of fostering natural ecosystems in large metropolitan environments.

2013 3:53 PM EDTTwo years before the Korean peninsula erupted in a civil war that saw the North and the South (and the U.S.
the Soviet Union and China) engage in a conflict that shaped the post-World War II world
brutal rebellion in the young Korean republic paved the way for the cataclysmic Korean War to come
when communist rebels — many of whom had been in the American-trained Korean Army — revolted against the (authoritarian) government of President Syngman Rhee
As tensions on the peninsula again reach a boiling point and as the rhetoric from both sides — especially from the North’s young
Kim Jong Un — grows more belligerent and more bizarre
the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion might seem like little more than a historical anomaly: a minor
But in cultures that measure their histories in terms of millennia
a revolt and its repression is not merely remembered seven decades later; instead
every gesture emanating from South Korea and North Korea today
in an effort to perhaps add some needed context to the current situation on either side of the 38th parallel
LIFE.com presents a series of photos by the great Carl Mydans
who was on the ground when the rebellion began
and bore witness to the carnage that followed
Most of these pictures never ran in LIFE magazine
(We should also note that the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion came on the heels of the South Korean army’s notoriously violent suppression of an uprising on the island of Jeju
[See all of TIME.com’s Korea coverage.]
“A New Communist Uprising Turns Men Into Butchers,” LIFE painted an unsettling picture of the rebellion
complete with the observation that the United States “gave South Korea a government” after the Second World War — suggesting
that the Korean peninsula was once again little more than a convenient crossroads upon which more powerful nations have always fought their proxy wars
Sooner or later the cold war in Korea was sure to turn hot
and so it did in late October on a signal from the Soviets
The reasons were well known: Korea had been split between U.S
and the Soviets obstructed all later efforts to unite it
preferring to establish a Communist “people’s republic” in North Korea and equip it for civil war which would make all Korea Red
The urgency increased in August when the U.S
gave South Korea a government under President Syngman Rhee
it splattered blood across the new southern nation
19 while the Moscow radio trumpeted the news that Soviet troops were leaving Korea
Simultaneously a Red cell of 40 soldiers in a regiment of the American-trained Korean national army at the southern port of Yosu [today spelled “Yeosu”] killed the regimental officers
murdered the local police and quickly captured both Yosu and the city of Sunchon 25 miles to the north
and followers raised the flag of the North Korean People’s Republic
and for a few bloody days ruled a small chunk of Rhee’s south
at least temporarily repulsed by loyal troops
LIFE’s Carl Mydans was on the scene with a camera to record the brutal consequences
At Sunchon [today spelled “Suncheon”]
which means “Peaceful Heaven,” the rebellion’s Red leaders opened the city jail and let political prisoners lead them through the city from house to house pointing out enemies for revenge
With this help the rebels had slaughtered about 500 civilians and 100 police before the Korean national army retook Sunchon (pop
and LIFE’ Carl Mydans watched with horror as the process of retribution began
aided by a few police who had fled to the hills and come back
We watched from the sidelines of a huge playground with the women and children of Sunchon while all of their men and boys were screened for loyalty
Four young men stripped to their shorts were on their knees begging
One had his hands up in a symbol of prayer
Suddenly these suppliant hands were crushed into his mouth and nose as a rifle but smashed his teeth
who beat the kneeling group until the beaters
“We drove through the city — empty except for bodies — and here we saw the reason for the brutal retaliation
Bodies lay just as they had been slain by the rebels — in heaps with hands tied behind their backs
Some were burned in charred masses on the streets
or lay alone where they had fallen beside looted shops and homes
women streamed away from the big playground to poke among the heaps of bloated dead — a scene not easy to watch
Then tears came and they were hysterical.”
1912Carl Mydans—Time & Life Pictures/Getty ImagesIn type-written notes sent to LIFE’s editors on October 24
Mydans was even more plainspoken about the terrors he and three other correspondents (see the photo above) witnessed during the rebellion and its suppression
“Covering this war is difficult and frightening,” he wrote
“Both factions in the fight wear the same uniform
ride in the same American vehicles and are armed with the same weapons
Tonight as I write this in the hillside home of [Presbyterian missionary] Dr
Crane the reports of rifles and automatic weapons still sound nearby and to we four correspondents it carries the full feeling of war.”
“We entered Sunchon 1 PM on the 24th,” he continued
“The city stank of death and was ill with the marks of horror.”
Almost plaintively — but with never a hint of self-pity or complaint — Mydans also noted that “it is now midnight and we haven’t been to bed for two days
We [he and the three other newsmen] are all the outside observers there are of this point in Korean history.”

Park's lawyer admitted murder at the trial following the first trial

"It is difficult to determine whether there was a purpose of committing paragraph 2 (preliminary murder) because I can't remember it while drinking," and argued that carrying a weapon alone does not mean there is a purpose of murder
When the court asked Park if he was in the same position

The new cultural center is situated at the periphery of the Old City, among the traces of the old Suncheon Wall. Drawing upon the concept of the wall, the building rises up in one continuous sweeping motion, enclosing a garden and event space at its center. The circular volume rises at certain points to allow permeability between the center and its surroundings, presenting four "gates" for users to pass through.
Courtesy of Matteo CainerDialogue between the building and the natural environment is encouraged through floor to ceiling glazing on both the external and internal facades. The green space enclosed within becomes an oasis, linking the space to the mountains and wetlands. The landscape is raised to provide a buffer to the urban condition which borders it, with the infill creating an internally facing amphitheater.
The design took sustainability into high consideration and delivers a passive internal environment. The partially exposed concrete envelope provides thermal mass, while the overall energy consumption is lowered by natural/displacement ventilation and efficient lighting systems. The building's heat gain is regulated by digitally controlled external sunshades. The roof design is inspired by the traditional Korean Hanok, which facilitates rainwater collection and the reuse of grey water.

The temple’s most beautiful spot is said to be Samcheonggyo Bridge
with many people coming here solely to take a picture of the bridge
Songgwangsa Temple also opens its doors to over-night guests through their templestay program
Participants can experience activities such as temple dining and prayer while relaxing in nature
Guests can stay for up to 10 days at a time
While the program isn’t catered to foreigners
the language barrier isn’t big enough to prevent you from enjoying a full day at the temple
Operating hours: Summer 06:00-19:00 / Winter 07:00-18:00
Admission: Free / Templestay program: Adults 80,000 won per night
Waonhaebyeon Beach has recently become popular among the younger generations in Korea as a great photo spot
You can easily get great photos thanks to the observation deck in place
and the fact that this is a lesser-known location
Enjoy the surrounding area by going for a drive or a walk beside the vast mudflat
There are lots of cute photo zones set up around the area to make lasting memories
As the largest tourist city in Jeollanam-do
Suncheon offers a range of city tour bus courses
All five courses start and end at Suncheon Station
Taking one of the city tour buses is a great way to see the many attractions in Suncheon
which are spread out and are difficult to access by taking the regular city bus
The city tour course is operated in a circular shuttle bus style
with passengers able to freely get off and back on the bus at the many stops along the way
and night tours are operated like a tour package
with a guide on-board to provide information about the stops along the way
Reservations can be made in advance online or over the phone
although they aren’t required to board; you can usually get on the bus by simply waiting at Suncheon Station before the departure time
priority is given to those with reservations
so it’s possible you won’t be able to board the bus if there are many people

Life&Culture Into wetlands of Suncheon Bay
South Jeolla Province -- Stepping off the KTX
I was welcomed by light drizzle and clouded skies in Suncheon
a city on the southwestern coast of the peninsula
It was perhaps a befiting first impression of a city that holds the record
for the most rainfall in one hour -- a whopping 145 millimeters
the wet was what created the beautiful natural environment that makes the South Jeolla Province city such a worthwhile place to visit: from the botanical life and the marshes
to the mountains hosting scenic views and Buddhist temples
One of the few regional steretypes that has proven to be true is that the people of Jeolla Province know how to cook
Just make sure you know what hongeo is before ordering it
the fermented skate is a dish that will burn through your nose and mouth with its pungent odor
Daewon Sikdang is another of famous restaurant in the region
this one specializing in Korean traditional food that really strained the table supports with its massive variety of dishes
The first stop on the schedule was the Suncheonman Bay National Garden
established in 2013 as the first national garden for the Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo 2013
It reopened the following year as a permanent establishment
and is now the biggest tourist spot in the city
pulling in 6.1 million of its 9 million tourists in 2017
Spanning across more than 1.1 square kilometers
the garden has over 5 million plants and 880,000 trees
the place sheds its skin by redecorating itself with new array of flowers
azaleas and roses are two heroines of the garden in May
The garden is divided into different sections each of which has its own theme
One was themed after the world’s different garden styles
I stepped across the arch columns that took me inside the Italian Garden
The Dutch Garden is filled with tulips and other flowers that surround a model windmill
Located in the Wetland center is the Dream Bridge
It is suspended across the river and holding drawings of 140,000 children from across the world
The place also has a zoo that is home to flamingos
a family of which recently celebrated the birth of two cubs
Mudflats and fields of reeds stretch as far as the eye could see on the wetlands of the bay
It is spread across 22.6 square kilometers and is home to indigenous wildlife on land
The thousands of hooded cranes that usually occupy the area had already moved out
A small boat that carries 30 passengers is operated at the bay
which takes 35 minutes to sail across the wetlands and requires a photo ID to board
A better view of the marshlands is available from the Yongsan Observatory
which also offers a fascinating view of the dusk
because it makes a huge difference to how the wetlands look
Those looking to taste the traditional culture can walks the slopes of Jogyesan on a quest for Songgwangsa
a temple built with hopes of spreading Buddhism throughout the world
which should take you about 15 minutes to the temple
Designated as a national treasure of Korea in 1962
the temple was completely destroyed in a fire in 1842
It has since undergone several reconstructions
the founder of the Jogye order and one of the most famous zen masters in Korea
One of the unusual things about the temple is that it has no pagoda like other large Buddhist temples in the country
“The foundation of the temple is in the form of a lotus floating on water,” the city’s culture guide Park Da-in explained
This is according to Pungsu Jiri (Feng Shui)
and the builders deliberately avoided building pagodas to avoid the “lotus from sinking,” also a geomancy belief
a sign post led me to a hike toward Bulilam hermitage
on the aptly-named “road of no possession.” What was waiting at the end of the surprisingly taxing 40-minute hike was a place of tranquility
and the final resting place of respected Buddhist monk Bojsong

Home » South Korea donates 2nd Pohang-class corvette to Peruvian Navy
This is the ROK Navy’s second delivery of a Pohang-class corvette
The corvette Suncheon has been renamed B.A.P Guise
after the Peruvian Navy’s founder and first Chief of Naval Operations (CNO)
the B.A.P Guise left Jinhae naval base on November 26th of last year
Following a series of overhauls and maintenance
B.A.P Guise is scheduled to be used as the main asset that would participate in the U.S.-led international naval exercise RIMPAC (Rim of Pacific) and be in charge of the Peruvian Navy’s operations at open seas
Juan Carasco expressed sincere gratitude to the Korean government and the ROK Navy by asking that the two countries do their best to enhance the bilateral friendship
Young-Joon Cho mentioned that Peru and Colombia are the only countries in South America that South Korea donated two naval ships
putting an emphasis on the fact that this donation symbolizes the bilateral friendship
“Peru is a friendly state in South America where has market potential for exports from our defense industry
as the country is considering a military modernization project in its Army
1000-ton Pohang-class patrol corvette ship (PCC) Suncheon
performed patrolling duties near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea as a part of the ROK Navy’s 2nd Fleet as of 1989 and was distinguished during the Battle of Daecheong in 2009
after serving for 7 years in the 3rd Fleet since 2012
The Pohang is a class of Patrol Combat Corvette (PCC) of the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN)
A total of 24 ships were built by several South Korean shipyards: Korea Shipbuilding Corporation
The primary mission of the corvette is coastal line patrolling
Pohang class is deployed as the main force to monitor defense on the South Korean coast
These ships were equipped to perform anti-submarine
and anti-aircraft warfare operations in the littoral environment
was sunk on 26 March 2010 by a torpedo launched by a North Korean Yeono-class submarine

A soldier searches civilains in South Jeolla in a bit to uncover people who took part in the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion in 1948
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission said yesterday that it has confirmed at least 439 civilians were killed in a massacre known in Korea as the Yeo-Sun incident
which took place about six decades ago in Yeosu and Suncheon
The Yeo-Sun incident erupted in October 1948 when approximately 2,000 left-wing soldiers rebelled against the government in protest against its heavy-handed clampdown on an uprising on the southern island of Jeju months earlier
frequently referred to as “partisans,” staged guerrilla-style fights against the military and took cover on Mount Baekun and Mount Jiri
When the government intervened to quash the uprising
a large number of civilians lost their lives
“Suncheon is the area with the highest number of civilian casualties
According to testimony by eye witnesses and the families of the victims
the number of people killed has been confirmed at 439,” the commission said
“If you include those people whose whereabouts have not been confirmed
The commission said that most civilians were killed by the military
which believed that they must have provided food
shelter and other assistance to the rebel troops
or they may have lost their lives because they happened to be living in areas of combat
The commission also confirmed in the process of its investigation that the military recklessly arrested civilians and used violence or torture on them
“There were no legal grounds for such an action
The field commander must have illegally arrested and killed civilians based on his own interpretation of the law
This is an illegal act going beyond the purview of martial law.”
The commission said that then President Syngman Rhee and the Defense Ministry are ultimately responsible for the civilian casualties
even though the direct order must have come from the field commander
It called on the government to offer an official apology for the massacre and provide financial support for activities to commemorate those who lost their lives in the massacre
The commission also demanded that the government include the massacre in official materials and strengthen education about the historical facts of the massacre for students and members of the military
a history researcher at the National Institute of Korean History
“The Yeo-Sun incident provided the Rhee administration with an excuse for enacting the National Security Law and establishing a strongly anti-communist nation in his early days as president.”

POSCO has partnered with Suncheon Eco Trans to create the nation’s first unmanned train
SkyCube was officially opened on April 19 and is Korea’s first Personal Rapid Transit (PRT)
SkyCube will provide an accessible means of transportation to experience the great natural surroundings found in Suncheon
Suncheon Eco Trans’ SkyCube was made possible through investments between POSCO and Suncheon City’s Private Enterprise Investment Agreement
SkyCube runs for 4.64 km from Suncheon’s Dream Bridge to Suncheon’s Literature Center
The path that it runs is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Suncheon
Pictured here: PRT car passing through the track
SkyCube has a total of 40 cubicles and is a unique system in that it allows the surrounding environment to be preserved
The implications of these benefits may prove to be beneficial for transportation systems built in the future
Pictured here: PRT routes in Suncheon that preserve the natural environment
Suncheon is a unique wetland ecosystem that needs to be preserved as much as possible
SkyCube passengers can enjoy superb views of Suncheon
The area in which SkyCube runs is a vast natural wetlands area with 120 native marsh plants and over 240 species of migratory birds
It is currently registered within the Ramsar Convention which is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands
the Korean Tourism Organization selected Suncheon as one of the top 5 wetlands in the world
Pictured here: Suncheon Bay Garden (Photo from http://bit.ly/PJSJTB)
became a landmark after successfully completing the very first Korean garden festival
Suncheon Bay Garden consists of Cypress Forest and Autumn Tint Path and more
divided into sections in accordance to the tree species and features various themed attractions such as Meditation Path and Meditation Place
While there are many places to visit throughout the Korean peninsula
many people recommend the ‘ecological tourist travel course’ in Suncheon
Pictured here: Suncheon Eco Trans opening ceremony
POSCO and Suncheon signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the basis of jointly developing technology for the nation’s unique state-of-the-art transportation system
A test track was set up in Sweden and the system performance was verified to meet the safety requirements of northern Europe
The culmination of these efforts was precisely “SkyCube”
Pictured here: Beautiful natural scenery as scene from the PRT
The technology behind SkyCube is more economical compared to former technologies as the train can be controlled 24 hours without human involvement
PRT are more cost-efficient in terms of construction as well as operating costs
SkyCube advantage is it is an eco-friendly solution since the PRT system runs on electric energy 100% and therefore does not generate exhaust emissions
polyurethane coated wheels were used in lieu of steel wheels in order to reduce noise and preserve the natural environment
this state-of-the-art transportation technology seamlessly fits in with the natural ecosystem
Pictured here: Internal arrangement of the PRT which is being seen as the future for eco-friendly transportation
Pictured here: PRT cars waiting at a station
PRT is an ecofriendly alternative to the regular public transport system
The system covers all necessary elements for the best green transportation solution including punctuality
Installation and operation is possible even in urban areas and short interval stops
Unlike existing public transportation that runs on predetermined timetables
At times when there are not many passengers
empty cars will wait before passing through stops and during rush hours
nearby cars will be called to meet service needs
Passengers do not need to wait over one minute for the PRT
passengers can get on the PRT and travel to their final destination without making stops in between
Passengers can have their privacy and travel within efficient timeframes
System installation costs about 1/10th of the cost it takes to build subway systems
They are also 1/3rd the cost of light rail train systems and capacity is about the same
cost efficiency is high and costs can be further reduced if cars are not operated when there are no passengers
PRT is an advantageous solution for development of new cities or new routes or advancements to existing routes
Capable of being constructed with 90cm of concrete
the PRT tracks have the flexibility to be installed on main roads as well as sharp curves
Pictured here: SkyCube passing through a station
a small track rail system for 20 people was developed at Morgantown West Virginia University
PRT (Personal Rapid Transition) and GRT (Group Rapid Transition) were used as routes to connect the college campus with the city
This was followed by further developments in Japan
The Cabintaxi developed in 1970 was in commercialization stage in 1980 however due to German government budget issues
the full development was postponed indefinitely
the PRT was a step closer to becoming fully commercial
Systems under current operation were ULTra in England and 2getthere in Netherlands
SkyCube is a superior operating system that supplies electricity to the track by using a third rail
it has already received safety system certification and is recognized in the world market for excellence and responsiveness
