Ulsan HD are the K-League's sole representative at the Club World Cup - can they make an impact
Ulsan HD have dubbed themselves the Pride of Asia ahead of their third trip to the Club World Cup
The club is a two-time winner of the Asian Champions League and has won the K-League 1 five times
For a team that was founded more than 40 years ago
While South Korea's top flight doesn't get much visibility outside of Asia
it consistently develops top-notch talent who go on to play for some of Europe's top leagues
And with the South Korea men's national team being No
the country's domestic league plays a big role in that
There aren't many household names on Ulsan
but that could very much change in this year's revamped Club World Cup
Ulsan HD promise to be formidable and could surprise soccer fans
They could hold their own in a group that features Dortmund
and expectations for the Korea Republic side at the tournament
A South Korean visit by US Navy Secretary John Phelan
which included visits to the shipyards of HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean
appears poised to set the gears in motion for cooperation in shipbuilding between South Korea and the US
The two countries’ talks toward an agreement on the joint maintenance
and operations (MRO) of warships are expected to gather momentum
along with discussions on cooperation on the building of new vessels
Phelan also reportedly requested South Korean investment in US shipyards that are currently outdated and in disrepair
and Hanwha Ocean all announced on Thursday that Phelan had visited the HD Hyundai shipyard in Ulsan and the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Geoje on April 30
Phelan was joined in Ulsan by HD Hyundai Executive Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun and in Geoje by Hanwha Group Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan
Phelan confirmed the potential for MRO cooperation
Despite investing around 10 trillion won (US$7 billion) in MRO for its military vessels
the US Navy has struggled to repair and maintain its warships as US shipbuilding capacity has waned over the years
The US has made use of legal exemptions to allow warships docked overseas to be maintained and repaired by certain overseas shipyards
Hanwha Ocean received two MRO contracts from the US Seventh Fleet last year for an auxiliary ship and a replenishment vessel
work was completed on the replenishment vessel
which was delivered to the US Navy in March of this year
The Seventh Fleet also extended an MRO contract to HD Hyundai for a replenishment vessel in February of this year
The Seventh Fleet is headquartered not in the US but at Yokosuka in Japan
Phelan also explored the prospect of contracting South Korean firms to build new vessels
Current US law restricts military shipbuilding to domestic shipyards
but exceptions can be granted through presidential approval
Phelan inspected HD Hyundai's special vessel yard in Ulsan
where vessels such as advanced Aegis-class destroyers are built
Hanwha Ocean already has a domestic yard in the US
having acquired the Philly Shipyard last year
Hanwha reportedly stressed to Phelan the significance of its US facilities
which enable it to build and repair ships on American soil
Phelan also requested investment in US shipyards during his visit
as mentioned by the US Navy in a press release on Wednesday
“Secretary Phelan further discussed shipbuilding as a top priority with a recognition of Korean shipyards
and encouraged additional investment in US domestic shipyard[s],” the press release stated
Korean shipbuilding firms are currently exercising caution in weighing the costs and risks of investing in and acquiring US shipyards

Business Novelis opens $65m green aluminum plant in Ulsan
the world’s largest aluminum recycler and a leading producer of rolled aluminum
announced Tuesday that it has begun operations at its new recycling center in Ulsan
advancing its circular aluminum production approach in Korea
the Ulsan facility can produce up to 100,000 tons of low-carbon aluminum sheet ingot annually by processing a broad spectrum of aluminum scrap
ranging from beverage cans to automobile components and industrial materials
The project began in 2022 after the US-based company invested 65 million dollars in Ulsan Aluminum
a rolled aluminum producer jointly operated with Japanese steelmaker Kobe Steel
In addition to operating Asia’s largest aluminum can recycling plant in Yeongju
the new site will raise Novelis’ total annual recycling capacity in Korea to 470,000 tons
The company said that the Ulsan facility is expected to cut carbon emissions by 420,000 tons a year — the equivalent of what 19 million trees absorb annually
Recycling aluminum reduces emissions by up to 95 percent compared to production from raw materials
Novelis anticipates that the new center will further strengthen its collaboration with Korean industries in response to the growing demand for eco-friendly materials
“The Ulsan Aluminum Recycling Center is a strategic investment aimed at meeting growing customer demand for sustainable
low-carbon aluminum across beverage packaging
automotive and specialty product sectors,” said Novelis Asia President Sachin Satpute
“We will continue to expand the use of recycled aluminum inputs to reduce our carbon footprint as well as those of our customers and our industry
accelerating the transition to a circular economy."

Agreement intends to develop undersea complex able to host 100,000 GPUs
Plans to deploy an underwater data center in South Korea have taken a step forward
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) recently announced it had signed a business agreement for cooperation on 'Eco-friendly underwater data center complex construction technology research' with Ulsan Metropolitan City
The agreement aims to develop technology for building an underwater data center complex with 100,000 servers on the seabed
KIOST president Lee Hee-seung said: “KIOST is expected to take the lead in developing related technologies to build an eco-friendly underwater data center
thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the data industry for carbon neutrality and energy conservation
and contributing to revitalizing the local economy.”
The companies aim to secure a budget for a national research project on the development of underwater data centers; develop core technologies for underwater data center design and construction as well as operation and maintenance; and install and verify underwater data center test beds
Plans for an underwater data center were first mooted by KIOST and Ulsan back in April 2022 as part of a wider underwater city project funded by the South Korean government
including SK Telecom and Lotte Engineering
The joint research team plans to complete the detailed design of the main module with research spaces
and residence module by the end of this year
The first underwater module is set to be deployed 30m down in the sea off Sinri Port
Three people are set to reside in the underwater complex
POSCO is a South Korean steel manufacturer
GS E&C is a civil engineering contractor
While it continues to be a niche part of the industry
there are a number of underwater data center projects occurring globally
in that it is looking to also submerge people in the wider platform
rather than deploy a lights-out type module
Chinese company HiCloud says it has underwater data center modules operating commercially
having installed its servers 35m deep on the seabed off the coast of Lingshui Li County
Data center startup Subsea Cloud already claims to operate 13,500 servers in underwater locations in Asia
which will be rented to AI companies and those in the gaming industry
and says its servers do not impact the ocean’s temperature
Californian startup NetworkOcean is planning to sink a 500kW data center contained in a capsule designed by the company into San Francisco Bay
Microsoft is the highest-profile player in the space
but has seemingly dropped its interest in the concept
The cloud giant's Project Natick saw a subsea data center deployed off the coast of Scotland in 2018

Boyanich is at the core of Ulsan's midfield
which has exceptional ball handling ability
Boyanich has a lot of passing skills that catch the opponent's defense off guard in addition to the ability to easily beat one or two defenders
Boyanich's shooting ability to score anywhere near the penalty box is also considered an advantage
Boyanich made his K League 1 debut in the 2023 season in Ulsan
Bojanic has risen to the top midfielder in K League 1 by improving his activity and defense
In three league games before this season's injury
he showed off his good physical condition with one goal and two assists
Ulsan fans nicknamed Bojanic "Moon Soo Zidane." Boyanich knew this
"Isn't Zidane a very great player?" Boyanich said after laughing
"I think it's hard to say I'm the right player because I was a different player in a different class."
I don't hate the nickname 'Moon-soo Zidane'
I will try to hear that more often from fans," he said
Ulsan's lead chase is expected to speed up
two draws and five losses (20 points) in 13 K League 1 games this season

Boyanich had been out of the team's power due to injury after the Jeju SK match on March 9
"Boyanich has regained his senses through his own game," adding
"He has also regained his confidence." "We need to increase the physical strength of the game
Boyanich's return was a little later than expected
I expect to find the performance quickly," he said
two draws and five losses (17 points) in 12 K League 1 games this season
It ranks fourth among the 12 K-League teams
The trend of winning one game and losing the next game is repeating
"It's right that we're having a hard time," adding
"I'm trying to see it as positive as possible."
"There are several new players who have joined ahead of this season
Veteran players are making great efforts both on and off the ground
He is especially taking good care of young players
I believe this hardship will make us stronger," he said
Rumors about Ulsan emerged at the end of the pre-interview
It was a rumor that "Ulsan players do not listen to coach Kim."
"Our team is a team with strong solidarity," adding
"Our players not only have skills but also great character
There seems to be a lot of stories because the results are not coming out
I never believe it unless I've seen and heard it myself
Kim's side defeated nearest challengers Gangwon FC 2-1 on Friday to secure the club's fifth league title, and the first since the former Malaysia head coach replaced Hong Myung-Bo at the helm in late July
"I was so honoured to have a chance to work with such great players
and I knew I absolutely had to win a title here," said Kim
who spent five seasons with Ulsan as a player before starting his coaching career in Hong Kong in 2002
"There was a lot of pressure to extend the championship-winning streak
Kim took over when Hong, who guided Ulsan to back-to-back championship wins in 2022 and 2023, quit the club to become the long-term replacement for Jürgen Klinsmann as South Korea boss
Ulsan have lost only once in K League 1 since Kim's arrival, and the victory over Gangwon, which came through goals from Gustav Ludwigson and Joo Min-Kyu
was the club's eighth in 11 league matches since Hong's departure
That run of results came despite Kim privately questioning whether he had made the right decision to move back to South Korea to become a K League head coach for the first time in his career
I kept wondering if I hadn't made the wrong choice to take this job at all," he said
"But I had to overcome those challenges on my own
Crying in self-pity wasn't going to solve anything
having my players trust in me and follow my lead was the biggest reason that we won."
which were likely to be caught in the morning of the 25th
have revived with strong winds in the afternoon
Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom said at a briefing on the wildfire site
Daeunsan Mountain with Jubul is very rough and there is even a transmission tower
so it is difficult to extinguish it," he said
a strong wind warning was in effect for all regions from 1:40 p.m
The forest fire had a 98% extinguishing rate as of 5 a.m
Ulsan City and forest authorities planned to concentrate helicopters and extinguishing personnel to catch the main fire in the morning
but the fire spread as the wind intensified again
the wildfire extinguishing rate decreased to 92%
and the affected area expanded from 438 ha to 465 ha
The remaining fire lines to be extinguished also increased from 0.4km to 1km
21 kilometers away from the forest fire site
Evacuation orders were issued to apartment complexes and Ulsan nurseries near the Eonyang wildfire site
Ulsan City started to put out forest fires before sunset with the aim of completely suppressing them
but it is unclear whether they will be completely suppressed as wildfires are being revived in places due to strong winds
"It is difficult to enter near the ignition point due to strong winds and smoke," adding
"We are very worried about defending the 1,000-year-old due to the fire spreading near the Naenam Rock in Daeunsan Mountain."
It always seemed his likeliest destination once rumours started swirling in South Korea, even though there were murmurings that a return to Hong Kong was potentially on the cards
With no disrespect to the Hong Kong national team vacancy
Malaysia are on par with, if not superior to, Hong Kong, even though both had made excellent strides in recent times having ended long waits to return to the AFC Asian Cup earlier this year
The FIFA world rankings suggest as much with Malaysia sitting 134th and Hong Kong 25 places lower
But Ulsan, who have been looking for a new man in charge since Hong Myung-Bo was jettisoned to the South Korea national team
They have been the dominant force in South Korean football in the past couple of years although their overall haul of four K League 1 titles still pales in comparison to more traditional powerhouses like Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, FC Seoul and Pohang Steelers
They are also one of the biggest clubs in all of Asia, having won the AFC Champions League twice
the biggest motivating factor for Kim -- which also is the strongest testimony to what he has achieved to earn this job -- is the fact that his marks the first opportunity he has to take on a top job in his native country
Having had a decent playing career that saw him feature for Ulsan and also have a brief spell with Jeonbuk
the 55-year-old has had quite the unconventional coaching journey which started where he decided to hang up his boots -- in Hong Kong
He had a stint as assistant coach with Busan IPark which saw him take over the reins in a caretaker capacity for a period of time but, prior to the Malaysia job, Kim's managerial experience largely came in Hong Kong -- first with club teams Hong Kong Rangers (then Buler Rangers) and South China
before taking charge of the national team on two separate occasions
Kim Pan-Gon was previously best known in South Korea for his technical role with the Korea Football Association, where he played a major role in the appointment of Paulo Bento -- under whom they reached the round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. JUNG YEON-JE/AFP via Getty ImagesKim did subsequently have another assisting role in the K League with Gyeongnam FC and
then had a technical role at the Korea Football Association
All were testament to his undeniable coaching acumen and yet a top job at one of South Korea's bigger teams still seemed a fantasy
Those were usually reserved for former national team heroes with stellar credentials and reputations. The likes of Hong Myung-Bo, Hwang Sun-Hong and Kim Do-Hoon, who had all played at the FIFA World Cup
Having never featured for South Korea at any level
Malaysia came calling at the start of 2022
Harimau Malaya were 154th in the world at the time
they would qualify for the Asian Cup on merit for the first time since 1980 -- having last featured in 2007 by virtue of being the tournament's co-hosts
While they would ultimately fail to make it out of the group stage back in January
Malaysia caused a real stir when they held giants South Korea to a thrilling 3-3 draw -- a game in which they came from behind to lead and then snatched a point with a dramatic equaliser in the 15th minute of injury-time
They then won their opening two games in the second round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and looked on course for another major achievement
before falling away and missing out on the third round
Still, even if he has left them at an untimely moment with the much-coveted ASEAN Championship at the end of the year
Malaysia are now in a significantly better place than where they were when Kim Pan-Gon first took charge
what might have seemed a less-illustrious job is ultimately the one that has earned him recognition -- and vindication for his out-of-the-ordinary path back home
Kim Pan-Gon has finally found his way to a top job in South Korea -- and with the K League's biggest club at that
and he still may not be the likeliest of candidates
for all that he achieved -- first in Hong Kong and then with Malaysia -- he thoroughly deserves the opportunity
By his lofty standards, a dry spell stretching back to July -- excluding a strike while on international duty with South Korea -- would have represented a significant goal drought
On Sunday, he could not have chosen a better time to rediscover his scoring touch -- netting the second in a 2-0 away win over Pohang Steelers to move Ulsan one step closer to a third consecutive title
The result maintained the K League 1 leaders' five-point gap over Gangwon FC at the top of the table
with both sides meeting in a pivotal clash on Friday evening
Victory over Gangwon and Ulsan will once again be crowned champions even with two games still to go, which would represent a satisfactory ending to what has at times been a rocky campaign -- especially following the midseason departure of previous coach Hong Myung-Bo once the national team came calling
Joo's effort against Pohang was his first for the club since Hong was replaced by Kim Pan-Gon
"This is my first goal since coach Kim Pan-Gon arrived
"I believe that if I had converted more chances
who have been defending and making sacrifices for the team
"If I can score the goal that secures the title
it would erase all the struggles of this year
I am determined to score plenty more in the remaining games to bring joy to the coach
The end of Joo's goal drought would have been huge relief to all within the Ulsan camp
given his influence on the team's prospects
While his commitment and endeavour had never wavered
it was evident that it was simply confidence that he was lacking in -- especially four days before the win over Pohang
After coming on as a substitute and with Ulsan trailing Vissel Kobe 2-0 in an AFC Champions League Elite tie
Joo was sent through on goal -- the type of chance he would usually have converted with ease barring this recent three-month dip in form
Instead, he could only fire straight at opposition goalkeeper Daiya Maekawa
who were last champions of Asia as recently as 2020
remain bottom of the East Zone after three straight losses to start the continental campaign
Now that a weight has been lifted off Joo's shoulders, it bodes well for Ulsan as they prepare for a busy end to 2024 -- which will see them attempt to get their ACL Elite campaign back on track -- starting with next week's visit to Johor Darul Ta'zim -- as well as a Korea Cup final to come against Pohang on Nov
Not that Kim is putting any added pressure on his charges
"Rather than viewing the Gangwon game as the last, we should approach each match with a determination to win," said the former Malaysia and Hong Kong coach
we must win -- but there's no need to feel the pressure
National Ulsan mayor slammed for saying it was hard to dispatch female staff to wildfire
Ulsan Metropolitan City Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom came under fire for making controversial remarks saying that it is difficult to deploy personnel for wildfire suppression because “there are many female employees.”
The comment was made during a briefing at the Forest Disaster Response Headquarters
as a wildfire in Onyang-eup in Ulsan entered its fourth day on Tuesday
“There are limitations on the number of public officials we can mobilize when a wildfire breaks out in the region,” Kim said
so it’s not easy to send them into rugged mountain areas,” adding that the dispatch of some 500 soldiers from nearby army and marines helped to manage the mop-up operations at the scene
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the officers who mobilized the military personnel.”
Kim’s comments quickly drew criticism online
One of the online comments left on the Ulsan city government’s website said
“if it’s hard to put out the fire because there are too many female employees
then why doesn’t the mayor — being a man — go do it himself?”
But the criticism focused not just on gender roles
but also about the government’s preparedness and approach to disaster response in general
who are not specialists in fire containment
Some online comments pointed out that even physically strong men
would find it dangerous to hike into steep mountainous terrain to fight a fire
“What’s the point of bringing up female employees at all?” another online commenter asked

South Korea -- As he entered the room for his post-match news conference
step after measured step with a stoic look on his face
it was apparent that Kim Pan-Gon had not liked what he had just witnessed in the preceding 90 minutes or so
Then again, that much would have been obvious even if the Ulsan HD coach had not been in the flesh
What started off as a promising Wednesday evening eventually unravelled as Ulsan fell to a 2-0 defeat to Vissel Kobe -- their third consecutive loss to start the 2024-25 AFC Champions League Elite campaign
In a match between the reigning South Korean and Japanese champions
Ulsan actually made the brighter start but their insistence on methodically playing the ball out of defence -- which had already resulted in a couple of scary situations in the opening 45 -- backfired just three minutes into the second half
With Vissel pressing high, they eventually won possession in a dangerous area for Taisei Miyashiro to score the opener -- and it was with a similar short counterattack that led to the same player sealing the result 17 minutes from time
they now have a mountain to climb if they are to reach the round of 16
who immediately started his news conference with an apology to the fans
there is just one basic aspect that was lacking from his side
Ulsan have already won the ACL twice (and) the K-League four times -- Ulsan represents Korea
"Even if we don't qualify for the round of 16
the opposition team and even our own teammates
"We have to improve our performance and even I also have to improve."
Kim apparently even went as far as to suggest that perhaps he did not deserve to stay in a role he only took on just three months ago -- although an Ulsan official clarified with ESPN that the meaning was lost in interpretation
Ulsan are still on course for a third consecutive K-League 1 title and are also into the final of the Korea Cup
There is still plenty for them to play for as 2024 comes to a close even if things have not been going smoothly on the continental front
Kim hopes yet another defeat in the ACL Elite on Wednesday serves as a reminder to his charges to avoid complacency
"(Winning) the K-League is very important," he added
"We have to recover to compete for the championship and get the title
It is a very challenging schedule but such circumstances give us the opportunity to find positive solutions
We need four victories to get us over the line for this year
there is more to fix as there were many mistakes today
We have to do our best to fix this in the future."

Taisei Miyashiro grabbed a second-half brace as Japan's Vissel Kobe earned a 2-0 win at South Korea's Ulsan HD in the Asian Champions League Elite on Wednesday
Kobe moved to seven points from three matches
while two-time Asian champions Ulsan fell to an 0-3 start to the ACLE group stage without scoring a single goal
Miyashiro opened the scoring with a solo effort in the 48th minute and doubled the lead 25 minutes later at Ulsan Complex Stadium
The 24-year-old striker got the ball from defender Yun Il Lok and dribbled into the box before firing a shot past goalkeeper Jo Hyeon Woo for a 1-0 lead

have entered into a Transmission Service Agreement (TSA) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)
The floating offshore wind projects that signed the TSA are Gray Whale (BadaEnergy)
Haewoori (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners)
This week, the 1,125 MW MunmuBaram and the 1,125 MW Korea Floating Wind (KF Wind) projects also secured an agreement with KEPCO
The agreement between the five developers and KEPCO ensures the connection of a total of 6 GW of clean power to the national grid
The BadaEnergy portfolio, developed jointly by TotalEnergies, Corio Generation, and SK Ecoplant, comprises both floating and bottom-fixed projects off the coast of Ulsan and South Jeolla province, including the Grey Whale projects
With an installed capacity of approximately 1.5 GW and developed across three phases
Gray Whale is planned to be constructed around 60 to 70 kilometres from Ulsan Port
The wind farm completed its environmental impact assessment (EIA) consultation with South Korea’s Ministry of Environment
The 1.5 GW Haewoori floating wind project is owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and developed by Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP)
The wind farm is planned to be built at a site approximately 80 kilometres off the coast of the city of Ulsan
According to information on the project’s website
Haewoori is expected to reach a financial close next year and be operational by 2028
Equinor signed a memorandum of understanding with Ulsan City in May 2019 for the development of the up to 800 MW Firefly/Bandibuli floating wind farm offshore Ulsan
planned to be built 70 kilometres off the Ulsan coast across two sites
The company obtained EIA approval for the project in July
enabling the wind farm to take part in the fixed-price contract auction for wind power projects
Five project developers launched the Ulsan Floating Offshore Wind Association in April last year to facilitate smoother cooperation and joined the Ulsan Chamber of Commerce as special members.
