as a University of Virginia student Victor Rodriguez – who didn’t know a single person before arriving on Grounds – was lonely Rico native’s day was walking from class to class or to the dining hall by himself Rodriguez would make a good friend in fellow first-year student Pedro Escobar “Why did finding each other have to be so hard?” ‘It really stinks walking around school during the day,’” Rodriguez said ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could find friends to walk with?’” That’s when the idea of WaBu – an abbreviation for “Walking Buddies” – was born Through a free smartphone app that can be downloaded on an iPhone from the iOS store and connects with Facebook accounts UVA students can reach out to other students who also don’t like walking alone you must have a UVA-registered email account Users can screen potential walking buddies by examining Facebook profiles and the execution took some time – nearly three years Rodriguez spent almost all of his free time working on the app he presented the idea at UVA’s Entrepreneurship Cup Despite what Rodriguez called “the worst pitch a human being has ever witnessed,” WaBu won the concept stage “That’s when we thought we might have something,” he said “but once you put so much effort into something “If I can find just 10 students at UVA who use it every day – that’s what I’m aiming for.” With roughly 150 downloads of the app so far Rodriguez appears on his way to surpassing that Victor Rodriguez believes WaBu is scalable for other universities around the country Second-year student Peyton Pellington said she’s a huge WaBu fan so the walks can be lengthy and this app allows students to connect and make the walk feel shorter with company,” Pellington said “I also feel safe using the app and have trusted the people I have met up with through the process.” who helped test WaBu for several months prior to the launch we greeted each other whenever we crossed paths and that expanded into a closer friendship with time,” she said “It was nice meeting someone that’s not through Instagram or Facebook The homepage of the app is a map that displays various location points around Grounds and the app sends out a walk request to other users The app also has a chat component similar to “WhatsApp” so users can iron out any kinks prior to their meeting “The app is extremely easy to use,” Pellington said “It has specific places around Grounds pinned Rodriguez has had a mentor in Darden School of Business adjunct lecturer Damon DeVito who helped judge the Entrepreneurship Cup competition DeVito said he sees tremendous value in the WaBu app from a security perspective “No police force can be big enough to look out for everyone,” DeVito said high-character students at UVA who don't want anything bad to happen to their peers The good guys far outnumber the bad guys.” “I feel that everyone deserves a great college experience DeVito said he has been blown away by Rodriguez’s resilience “Victor has refused to be beaten by changes in team and the norm of people telling him why he can’t succeed,” he said “At every moment he has smiled and seen the positive “I have a feeling that Victor is the right person to tackle this problem he’ll have thousands of people on Grounds proud that a fun Rodriguez said he realizes he has a long way to go “but just to have it out there and know that somebody might be using it is a great thought Rodriguez said a version of the app for Android users will be released soon Rodriguez believes WaBu is scalable to other universities around the country he plans on working on the app full-time after he graduates Rodriguez wishes something like WaBu had existed when he arrived from Puerto Rico more than three years ago “There are so many people from so many diverse backgrounds at UVA and I think that you have to be very lucky to actually find a good group of friends that you all share similar interests with,” he said “It’s really hard to feel comfortable at a big university “I think if you’re sharing moments every day and catching up with friends you’re walking home safe – you might get to know them better And I feel that it can really contribute to your overall college experience I feel that everyone deserves a great college experience Whitelaw Reid University of Virginia Licensing & Ventures Group Wabu Block in Intan Jaya regency until there is agreement from the Papua indigenous people in the area “We have asked that the planned mine be halted until the state obtains agreement from the Papuan indigenous people,” said Hamid in a press release received by Suara Papua Amnesty said that one of the largest gold reserves identified in Indonesia was located in an area considered to be a hot spot for a series of violent acts by Indonesian security forces against local civilians Hamid explained that Papuan indigenous people reported that violence was often committed by security forces along with restrictions on personal and public life such as restrictions of movement and even the use of electronic devices “Amnesty International Indonesia is quite relived by the attitude of the Papua governor who has officially asked the central government in particular the ESDM [Energy and Mineral Resources] Ministry to temporarily hold the planned mining bearing in mind the security situation in Intan Jaya which is not favourable,” he said which is inhabited by the Moni (Migani) tribe the Wabu Block contains 8.1 million tonnes of gold making it the fifth largest gold reserve known to exist in Indonesia “We also feel relieved after meeting with the Menkopolhukam who explained that the plan was still being discussed between ministries and would not be implemented for some time” Amnesty is concerned over the potential impact of mining in the Wabu Block on human rights added to by the risk of conflict in the Intan Jaya regency “So this special concern is obstacles to holding adequate and meaningful consultation with the Papuan indigenous people who will be impacted upon in order to obtain agreement on initial basic information without coercion in relation to mining in the Wabu Block” “We very much hope that the central government and the Papua provincial government will work together to ensure that the planned mine really does provide sufficient information consultation and agreement obtained from the Papuan indigenous communities” the Indonesian government has increased the number of security forces in Intan Jaya significantly Currently there are around 17 security posts in Sugapa district (the Intan Jaya regional capital) when in October 2019 there were only two posts This increase has also been accompanied by extrajudicial killings which have created a general climate of violence Hamid hopes that the government will pay attention to reports released by human rights organisations in Papua “The government must pay attention to human rights reports which are conducted by human rights organisations such as ELSHAM [the Institute for Human Rights Studies and Advocacy] Papua,” he said bearing in mind the recent situation in which there had been an escalation in conflict the central government was urged to halt the prolonged conflict in Intan Jaya by the Intan Jaya Papua Traditional Community Rights Advocacy Team (Tivamaipa) in Jakarta During an audience with the House of Representatives (DPR) Tivamaipa revealed that the armed conflict in Intan Jaya over the last three years began with the deployment of TNI (Indonesian military) troops which were allegedly tasked with providing security for planned investments in the Wabu Block by Mining and Industry Indonesia (Mind Id) through the company PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) 2020 Intan Jaya traditional Intan Jaya has led the area to become a hotspot for abuses by government security forces and other forms of abuses have continued with impunity At least 12 Indigenous Papuans in the region have been victims of unlawful killings leaving many residents with no option but to flee their houses and villages in search of safety in other cities and the forest Despite having the obligations to respect and protect Indigenous people’s rights Indonesian authorities maintain a blind eye toward its duties among which is to ensure that Papuans are effectively and meaningfully consulted in the policymaking that will affect them A number of Indigenous Papuans have told Amnesty they oppose the mining plans for Wabu Block due to its potential to harm both the environment and local communities They described using the proposed mining area for cultivating crops The Indonesian authorities are obliged to consult with the affected Indigenous people in order to obtain their free to a project that may affect them or their territories Amnesty is concerned that if the mining plans go ahead amid the current tensions in the region it will lead to more human rights violations Call on the Indonesian authorities to prioritise and respect the rights of Indigenous Papuans President of the Republic of IndonesiaGedung Bina GrahaJl I am very concerned about the gold mining plans in Wabu Block Mining in Wabu Block area has the potential to exacerbate the human rights violations of Indigenous Papuans if their rights are not respected not to mention the risk of environmental damage and the loss of their livelihoods that they may experience intimidation and murder that is occurring in the regency highlights the need for the state to act expediently in accordance with the mandate of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia which stipulates that the State has an obligation to guarantee and protect the human rights of its citizens including the rights of Indigenous current President of the boxing regulatory body for the West African sub region The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ambition Boxing Promotion is expected to bring his rich experience in the sport’s administration to bear as WABU reaches out to countries within the sub-region to revive the sport of boxing Ghana has had the opportunity to stage two WABU championships the last of which was held at the Lebanon House on Saturday in Accra where Illiasu Sulley stopped Mawuli Folivi to win the WABU middleweight strap who doubles as Vice Chairman of the Promotions Committee of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) is to rally support from countries in the sub-region and find ways bring back the interest in the sport “WABU will be stronger and could gain bigger recognition if we are able to bring all the countries together They have the talents but have relaxed a little may be because of challenges with the sport’s administration.” He said apart from Ghana and Nigeria that happens to be doing well the other countries have lagged behind in terms of development and that is what WABU will come to change He said WABU has designed new titles to give their promotions a new appeal and indicated that their champions are captured in the ratings of the World Boxing Council (WBC) He said Ghana will host a WABU delegates conference July ending in Accra Delali Miledzi has been crowned the new West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) super middleweight champion after he stopped experienced Burkinabe boxer Nigerian President of the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) has identified the lack of cooperation and support from local television stations as a major challenge hindering the growth of boxing in the West Africa sub-region boxing can be bigger than it is currently if local televisions have partnered promoters to raise revenue to stage bigger promotions In a chat with the Times Sports over the weekend United Kingdom and other countries advanced in the sport and indicated that they are where they are because of very good structures for the sport to thrive boxing has been given a new face in Nigeria They support our promotions by taking care of almost all the expenses “I feel it is much bigger in Ghana where DSTV also support some events especially those from the stable of Box Office Sports Such partnerships bring hope to the sport and its players,” he said Remi believes that considering the high numbers as far as television stations were concerned the sport can grow at a much higher pace if the local stations were involved the involvement of television stations makes the sport attractive to potential sponsors; making them key stakeholders as far as the promotion and development of the sport was concerned He said the stations have often pulled away because they anticipate to reap a lot of cash which is eventually not the case “The beginning of such ventures can be difficult but when they stay was doing its best by encouraging promoters to come up with very good proposals to make it easier for the corporate sector to come on board “It is this same sport that offers the boys on the street the opportunity to make a living for themselves Quite a number of these boxers could have become social miscreants but boxing has transformed their lives.” Remi hailed the current Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board for lifting a two-year ban of former world champion planned Wabu Block gold mine Pramuditya said he conveyed these findings directly to Papua Governor Lukas Enembe at the Papua Provincial Government Liaison Office in South Jakarta “In the case of several of these people they were even forced to take on a certain appearance because according to police these are characteristics of certain armed criminal groups,” Pramuditya told a media conference last Friday Amnesty’s findings also showed that the daily lives and activities of Intan Jaya communities such as shopping gardening and visiting other villages was being restricted by police “[Because] they are suspected of being members of armed groups,” said Pramuditya Pramuditya also reported that there was an internal refugee crisis in Intan Jaya as a result of the escalation on the findings of human rights violations in Intan Jaya, Amnesty is recommending that the government stop the licensing process for mining in the Wabu Block until the situation returns to normal “One of the recommendations we are strongly emphasising is to postpone issuing [mining] licences in Wabu Block at least until the security situation returns to normal,” said Pramuditya CNN Indonesia has
