Metrics details
Tectonics is broadly accepted as one of the main factors controlling long-term landscape evolution
The impact of tectonics on short timescales is most often observed through earthquake rupturings that produce localized
Although these deformations significantly affect the landscape
it remains challenging to precisely correlate major landscape changes with these localized earthquake deformations
linking instantaneous deformation to long-term morphological changes often involves a thought experiment with potentially limited temporal resolution
At a paleoseismological site along the slow-moving strike-slip Yangsan Fault in South Korea
we employed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and detrital zircon analysis on all exposed unconsolidated layers in trench walls
The results reveal a significant provenance shift in the sediments accumulating in the trench
indicating a major reorganization of the drainage network
we estimate that this change occurred around 70 ka
We propose that this drastic drainage reorganization was caused by a combination of very slow
earthquake activity and a temporary reduction in river erosion during the onset of the cold
dry spell characteristic of the MIS4 stage across the Korean Peninsula
Here, we have dated thirteen additional OSL samples to bring age constraints for the entire sedimentary stratigraphic section and further constrain the overall timing of fault activity. In addition, we processed 300 grains for U‒Pb age dating of detrital zircons that were collected from units 1, 3, and 4, to study the sediment provenance (Fig. 3)
Results and interpretation of these new data are presented in the following sections
considering all the available OSL ages and despite the chronological challenges in distinguishing the three units solely based on deposition times
we propose that the emplacement of sediments in the two Inbo trenches can be divided into three stages
This differentiation is possible due to their distinct sedimentological characteristics
allowing us to identify each stage more clearly as follows: Stage (1) deposition of unit 4 occurred before approximately 70 ka
Stage (2) deposition of the overlying units 3 and 2 took place at approximately 70 ka
and Stage (3) deposition of the uppermost unit 1 began around 70 ka and continued until after 30 ka
it suggests abrupt changes in the sedimentary condition and rapid sedimentation around 70 ka
Our detrital zircon U‒Pb dating results are dominated by two primary age groups: the Late Cretaceous (ca
80 to 70 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (ca
alongside with four other age groups in lower proportion: the Jurassic
these two major age groups exhibit distinct proportion in their respective distribution for the three different sedimentary units
the age distribution of the detrital zircons between unit 4 and unit 1 is nearly completely opposite
while unit 3 presents a more mix age distribution
the distinctive euhedral morphology and well-preserved edges of the zircon samples
which are characteristics indicative of a short transport distance
along with the varied age distributions within the different sedimentary units indicate that at the Inbo site we have distinct sedimentary units originating from different sources that have distinct ages
albeit all located relatively close to the trench outcrop
With the additional OSL dating conducted in the Inbo trench
we aim to provide a more precise understanding of the earthquake history at this site
we attempt to better constrain how earthquakes may have occurred over time along the SYF
The depositional ages of the Inbo trench layers are delineated into distinct periods
and unit 1 spanning from 68 ka to 29 ka
Our OSL dating suggests that the most recent earthquake activity occurred after 29 ka
while the penultimate event falls between 70 and 50 ka
A crucial observation from our study is the eastward shift in sediment provenance over time
primarily driven by fault activities that significantly restructured the local drainage systems
This shift was particularly predominated around 70 ka
when fault movements coupled with climatic changes spurred a major reorganization in drainage patterns
accelerating sediment deposition and altering sediment sources
The integration of OSL and detrital zircon U–Pb dating not only clarifies the depositional ages and sediment provenance but also chronicles the timing of these fault movements
This study emphasizes the complex interplay between tectonic activities and climatic conditions
shaping the landscape through ongoing deformation and varied sedimentation rates throughout the late Pleistocene
These insights highlight the dynamic and interconnected processes influencing regional geomorphology and stress the importance of an integrated approach to understanding geological and environmental changes

Asia’s key production site banks on rising demand for IQOS devices at home and abroad
South Gyeongsang Province -- Nestled in the countryside of Yangsan in southern Korea lies a sprawling factory tinged with the scent of tobacco
yet far less pungent than that of traditional cigarettes
Surprisingly high-tech and thus almost out of place in its rustic surroundings
the factory is redefining what it means to produce tobacco in the modern age
embodying a vision of a smoke-free future championed by its owner
the Korean arm of global tobacco giant Philip Morris International
At the center of its smoke-free initiative is IQOS
a tobacco-heating device that offers a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes
The tobacco sticks used in the device are produced for Asian consumers at the Korean plant
PMI’s only factory in East Asia among its 51 worldwide
has anchored the company’s regional operations since 2002
with two-thirds of last year’s output for domestic use and the rest exported to 12 Asia-Pacific countries
Tobacco sticks for IQOS now make up 60 percent of the factory’s output
a share expected to increase as demand rises at home and abroad
PMI said smoke-free products made up about 40 percent of its global net sales
Production especially has gained momentum following new device launches and the rollout of device-specific tobacco units this year
Philip Morris Korea launched the IQOS Iluma i series in Korea
its latest flagship device with features like puff optimization and a customizable pause mode for a better user experience
The new device lineup is compatible with two exclusive types of tobacco units: Terea and Sentia
focuses on offering a wide range of flavors
is designed to deliver a taste profile similar to that of traditional cigarettes
thereby helping smokers transition to smoke-free alternatives
Philip Morris Korea began nationwide sales of Sentia in April
“The facility isn’t just a manufacturing site
but the heart of innovation in the heated tobacco products market,” said Zia Ahmed Karim
manufacturing director at Philip Morris Korea
“The nationwide launch of Sentia marks another milestone in our journey and reflects our commitment to enhancing global competitiveness through quality and technology.”
The 70,000-square-meter plant maintains consistent product quality and has the capacity to produce 40 billion cigarette units annually
including both IQOS sticks and conventional cigarettes
“Virtually every step in the production of (IQOS) tobacco sticks is automated and managed by computerized systems capable of detecting even the slightest defects,” said a quality manager at the factory
The plant operates a dual-phase production process -- Primary and Secondary -- that mixes and processes tobacco sheets before assembling them into sticks with filters
Each step is subject to real-time quality checks
including aerosol analysis conducted in the plant’s in-house laboratory
the aerosol produced by IQOS devices contains
95 percent lower levels of harmful and potentially harmful constituents compared to cigarette smoke
coupled with cutting-edge technology and rigorous quality control systems
makes the Korean facility an irreplaceable presence in the Asian market,” a company official said during a briefing on Tuesday at the plant

Major wildfires in southeastern Korea have been raging for four days
but arid conditions and strong winds have prevented firefighters from extinguishing the blazes
High winds spread the fire that started near Anpyeong Township in Uiseong County
The city of Andong sent out an emergency alert text on Monday at 4:39 am saying that the Uiseong wildfire had spread to the mountains in the rural village of Hyeonan in Giran Township and advised residents to “evacuate immediately.”
Giran borders the township of Jeomgok in Uiseong County
making firefighting and rescue operations extremely difficult
even firefighting crews and situation room staffers had to evacuate
Local firefighting authorities rushed to put out a fire after it spread to a building at a highway rest station at one point
a testament to the difficulty firefighters face in containing and suppressing the conflagration
Daewoon region near the village of Onyang in Ulju County
the fire was a mere 700 meters away from the Yangsan border
Winds died down in the late afternoon on Monday
allowing firefighters to contain 95% of the flames
but the possibility of further spread remains
Daewoon region near the town of Onyang doesn’t have many private homes or other facilities
but Yangsan is home to numerous rehabilitation facilities
guest accommodation facilities and restaurants
The city of Ulsan announced that it had sent a request to Yangsan to set up a firebreak and to cooperate in the evacuation of civilians
the containment rate for fires near Sancheong
human casualties and property damage continued to mount
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters
five serious injuries and six minor injuries
The number of people with minor injuries rose by two compared to the previous day
The number of people driven from their homes by the fires increased by 1,908 in a single day
coming to a total of 4,650 as of 9 pm on Monday
The Korea Forest Service announced at 8 pm that forest fires had destroyed 10,584 hectares of forest
This amounts to around 14,800 soccer fields
the greatest scale of wildfire damage the country has seen since the fires that ran along the country’s northeastern coast in March 2022

National Opposition leader seeks to mend fences by meeting with ex-President Moon Jae-in
The leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea
expressed his commitment to guiding the party during a meeting with former President Moon Jae-in on Thursday
amid signs of internal division as pro-Moon figures slammed the opposition leader for his dominance in the party
Lee visited Moon’s residence in Pyeongsan Village
marking his first visit in four months since being re-elected party leader in September
Moon expressed his support for Lee’s role as party leader
urging him to lead the party with unity amid the significant headwinds the nation is expected to face in the new year
“(Moon) told Lee that both he and the Democratic Party appear to be taking steps toward unity and expressed his hope that they will continue on this path,” Jo told reporters after Moon and Lee’s meeting
Moon emphasized the need for an inclusive and conciliatory approach to navigate the party through the current extreme political climate.” Further details of their discussion were not disclosed as of press time
The opposition party leader's meeting with Moon came amid growing criticism from key figures within the main opposition party
over the party’s heavy reliance on its party leader
a former governor of South Gyeongsang Province who is considered a close ally of Moon
publicly urged the party to break away from its current structure
which he described as overly centered on Lee’s leadership
“The Democratic Party must abandon the painful labels of one-man system and privatized party,” Kim wrote in a Facebook post
“We must start changing the party’s political culture now
The only way forward is to build a broader
more inclusive Democratic Party,” he added
Kim also called on Lee to issue a sincere apology to those who distanced themselves from the party following the last presidential election
“Many people have turned away in disgrace after the 2022 presidential election
the local elections and the general election process,” he continued
“These are people who are willing to return and support us if only the minimal conditions for unity are met
We must sincerely apologize and make it possible for them to come back.”
During the candidate selection process after Lee became the party leader
some key figures close to Moon were sidelined or left the party
while allies of Lee secured key nominations
The result was a Democratic Party dominated by Lee’s supporters
less under the influence of Moon's supporters
lost his seat as governor of South Gyeongsang Province in 2021 after being convicted of involvement in an online opinion manipulation scandal
with the top court verdict barring him from holding public office until April 2028
His eligibility for the presidential election has been restored after a presidential pardon in August
Speculation has since grown that he could challenge Lee’s dominance within the party and emerge as a potential contender in the next presidential race
another pillar of criticism against Lee is tied to the recent decline in public support for the opposition party
According to a survey by Korea Research International
the Democratic Party’s approval rating stood at 44 percent
only slightly above that of the ruling People Power Party
This marks a 4 percentage point decline for the Democratic Party compared to early January
while the ruling party saw a 12 percentage point increase
Other pollsters have reported similar trends
reflecting the Democratic Party’s struggle to maintain public support
the former economy minister under Moon and now governor of Gyeonggi Province
saying the party’s crisis stems from a loss of credibility
“The Democratic Party must ask itself whether it is truly capable of overcoming this crisis and proving itself as a party capable of governance,” Kim said in a press briefing on Friday

the first combination of the central fuselage and the main wing took place at the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) site in Sacheon
It is the biggest crisis in the production of state-of-the-art domestic fighter jets
numerous aviation electronic equipment will be filled and completed in this framework
Maeil Economy covered the production process of KF-21 Boramae Yangsan Unit 1 at its KAI site for the first time in the Korean media
The KF-21 Boramae is the result of the Korean Fighter Experimental (KFX) project
the largest introduction of weapons since the end of the Korean military
It is a supersonic fighter that will replace the old Korean Air Force fighter (F-4 Phantom
and is 4.5th generation close to the 5th generation stealth fighter (F-35) manufactured by Lockheed Martin
The input budget alone exceeds 8 trillion won
When completed as scheduled in September 2026 and delivered to the Air Force
Advanced fighter jet manufacturing capabilities are the stepping stone for the K-bandon leap
The possibility of K Bangsan's export of advanced fighter jets to the global defense industry market
The KF-21 Boramae Yangsan Unit 1 came into its shape because of trial and error and test flights that crossed human limits
which have repeatedly made and discarded numerous test machines (test and evaluation aircraft) over the past decade
KAI was in the midst of a test flight with the personnel of the Air Force's 3rd Training Squadron adjacent to the Sacheon plant
the test flight of 1,000 Soti (number of flights) was completed without incident
head of the Korean Fighter Project at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration
"Since a test flight requires driving the aircraft to the limit
we cannot rule out an unexpected situation
The final result of the 2,000 test flight scheduled for next year is Yangsan Unit 1."
The KF-21 Yangsan Unit 1 fuselage was erected and mounted on the workbench
we have to lie down and work in an uncomfortable position
The drilling for rivets and bolts is automated
but the speed and strength of the drill must be set extremely sensitively for accurate work." The main blade bonded to the fuselage was made by pressing 80 layers of carbon fiber
Two test machines were located together in the production line
The aircraft was dangling with orange lines
It is a line that connects sensors that measure the pressure and vibration generated from the aircraft during a test flight
but the appearance is slightly different," adding
"It is Yangsan Unit 1 that is designed and manufactured through test flights to design the final shape." The reason why each prototype has a different appearance is that the data to be measured through the test flight are different
it will be reflected in the design of the mass production airframe
Yangsan City has completed a new barefoot trail at Design Park
the forest within Design Park is known for its high quality and health
The newly created barefoot trail takes advantage of this natural environment
offering a healing space for citizens with its shaded areas and abundant phytoncides
includes a variety of amenities such as a foot washing station
and a barefoot experience zone featuring red clay

We present a new example of the termination of strike-slip paleoearthquake ruptures in near-surface regions on the Yangsan Fault
based on multi-scale structural observations
Paleoearthquake ruptures occur mostly along the boundary between the inherited fault core and damage zone (N10–20°E/> 75°SE)
The ruptures propagated upward to the shallow subsurface along a < 3-cm-wide specific slip zone with dextral-slip sense
along which the deformation mechanism is characterized mainly by granular flow in near-surface region
The ruptures either reach the surface or are terminated in unconsolidated sediment below the surface
the rupture splays show westward bifurcation
and their geometry and kinematics show a change to NNW-strike with low-angle dip and dextral-reverse oblique-slip sense in the strata
We suggest that the upward termination of the contractional strike-slip ruptures is controlled by the inherited fault geometry that is unfavorable with respect to the stress field (ENE–WSW σHmax) at basement depths in terms of movement on the fault
and the lack of extension of the fault into shallow subsurface; a depth-dependent change in stress from σHmax > σv > σHmin to σHmax > σHmin > σv at depth of a ~ 200 m; and the physical properties of unconsolidated sediment
(a) Map of the present-day tectonic configuration in East Asia. PA: Pacific Plate, PS: Philippine Sea Plate, ER: Eurasia Plate. (b) Map of the Yangsan Fault and locations of Quaternary faulting observations along the fault. A digital elevation model was generated from digitizing topographic maps (1:25,000) from Korean National Spatial Data Infrastructure Portal (http://www.nsdi.go.kr/lxportal/) by using QGIS 3.28.5
We used low-viscosity oil (electronic discharge machining fluid) to prevent damage to water-sensitive clay-rich materials during preparation of samples (by cutting
and polishing) for observing the surfaces of rock-slabs and thin-sections
All of the surfaces for observation and analysis were prepared to be perpendicular to the fault surface and parallel to the slip direction
To analyze the chemical composition and microstructure of clast and matrix materials in slip zones
we used a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with back-scattered electron (BSE) mode
equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS)
The operating acceleration voltage and beam current were 15–20 kV and 1–5 nA

and (d) Miho along the main fault core and (e) Inbo2 and (f) Inbo1 sites on a subsidiary fault
Dashed white lines indicate the principal slip zones (PSZs)
The first small trench (d) was extended to the ~ 8 m deep
White circles indicate the rupture termination locations
Insets in (a) and (c) show that fault striations observed in the unconsolidated strata
These striations predominantly show dextral-slip with a component of reverse movement
Straight arrows and dashed line indicate the movement direction of the missing blocks and the strike of the fault surfaces
Highly weathered gravels offset by a surface rupture splay observed on the southern YF. There is no strength difference between the clasts and matrix.

Yellow dashed lines indicate asymmetric lenses derived from sediments and gouges
(c,d) SEM–BSE images showing thin undulated foliated layers in the mixed part of PSZ (c) and well-rounded clasts in the PSZ (d)
(e) SEM–BSE image showing asymmetric lenses in the mixed part in the PSZ
and SEM–BSE (h) images showing a rupture splay along the boundary between dark clay and yellowish sand
The combined results of our structural observations and previously reported paleoseismic data for the Yangsan Fault show that multiple ruptures propagated repeatedly along a narrow pre-existing weak zone at basement depths and terminated in zones of distributed deformation in unconsolidated strata in the shallow subsurface showing a change in geometry and kinematics
we examine the controls on the inhibition of the upward rupture propagation in the shallow subsurface along the fault
(a) Schematic diagram showing the rupture termination process in shallow subsurface along the Yangsan Fault. The stress tensor inversion calculated from fault-slip data (Table SI1) for the fault shows principal stress axes with their 95% confidence regions plotted on lower hemisphere stereonet
(b) In situ stress for South Korea measured by hydraulic fracturing and overcoring data
These features indicate that the rupture propagation process is influenced by the physical properties and thickness of unconsolidated sediment
which lack inherited structures to constrain distribution of the newly formed ruptures and have low inter-granular cohesion
we emphasize that if the sediment matrix and clasts have similar strength because of weathering and consolidation
cataclasis and localized deformation could occasionally occur in the unconsolidated strata during slip events
We conclude that the near-surface regions on the Yangsan Fault in SE Korea
where are characterized by unconsolidated strata with no pre-existing structures
favor the division of each rupture into several new splays having an orientation with the most favorable attitude with respect to the stress field; i.e.
in response to the imposed stress (ENE–WSW-trending σHmax
The Yangsan Fault is a typical low-deformation-rate fault in a weakly-active tectonic regime
the occurrence of contractional strike-slip paleoearthquake ruptures in near-surface regions indicates a process that inhibits the upward propagation of ruptures
This is apparent as a change from dextral slip on localized pre-existing rupture geometry at basement depths to oblique slip on westward bifurcation rupture geometry in shallow regions
The process is controlled by the following factors: (1) the unfavorable orientation of the inherited fault at basement depths with respect to the tectonic stress field and the lack of upward extension of the inherited fault to the shallow subsurface; (2) the ratio of overburden stress to minimum horizontal stress
which changes from deep to shallow levels (i.e.
at ~ 200 m depth); and (3) the physical properties of unconsolidated sediments
which have low inter-granular cohesion that favors granular flow and distributed deformation

announced on the 6th that it has supplied its kidney stone surgical robot "Jamenix" to Busan University Hospital in Yangsan
The introduction of Jamenics by Busan National University Hospital in Yangsan is the first in the Busan
Yangsan Busan National University Hospital
has accumulated experience in robotic surgery more than 4,000 times
This is second only to Seoul National University Hospital among national university hospitals nationwide
Through the introduction of Jamenix's Yangsan Busan National University Hospital
it is expected that active treatment of intractable kidney stones patients in Busan
the world's first fully robotic kidney stone surgery robot based on artificial intelligence (AI)
is an operation in which a 2.8mm flexible endoscope passes through the urethra and ureter without incision to repeatedly remove stones
When setting up a flexible endoscope robot for a patient during the Zamenix surgery is completed
one doctor will perform the robot surgery with only computing equipment
This greatly improves the efficiency of the medical field compared to surgery
Zamenix supports precise and stable surgery of robots with various AI functions
increasing stone crushing and removal rates compared to conventional surgery
a confirmed clinical trial of 46 patients with kidney stones measuring 0.5 to 3 cm in size requiring endoscopic stone treatment (RIRS) showed a stone removal rate of 93.5%
Zamenix's respiratory compensation function compensates the laser for the movement of stones due to patient breathing
preventing patient organ damage and reducing laser time with precise laser irradiation and accurate stone crushing
Zamenix is also equipped with an AI function that guides whether a stone is large enough to pass through the ureter
allowing the removal of stones without damage to the ureter due to large stones and delay in surgery
the path regeneration function automatically recognizes the path that the endoscope traveled to the location of the stone like an autonomous vehicle
innovatively improving the repetitive stone removal process
Another important feature of Zamenics is that it can reduce the operator's fatigue and the risk of radiation exposure through short-range remote control and surgical processes using robot arms
a professor of urology at Busan National University Hospital in Yangsan
"Based on our experience of robotic surgery accumulated more than 4,000 times for the treatment of urology patients so far
we decided to introduce this by positively judging the effectiveness and safety of zamenics," adding
and Gyeong will be able to treat them more effectively through zamenics."
"We are glad that Yangsan Busan National University Hospital
which has extensive experience in robotic surgery
introduced Zamenix for the first time in Busan
"We hope that the operation know-how of Yangsan Busan National University Hospital and Zamenix will combine to produce meaningful results for the treatment of incurable kidney stones."
Zamenix was selected as the 17th Innovative Medical Device by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in December 2021 and obtained a manufacturing license from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in October 2022
It was then selected as an innovative medical technology by the Korea Institute of Health and Medical Affairs (NECA) in August last year
and can be used as a non-payment or screening benefit for three years from this year
clinical trials will be conducted on 232 people from five institutions to register new medical technology
and after clinical research is completed early next year
it will be available in the hospital after switching to treatment purposes
Based on the clinical basis for the next three years
the salary is determined through the evaluation of new medical registration by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service
