the initiative is part of KT&G’s Green Globe program and focuses on three key components:
The project builds on an earlier agreement signed in June 2024 between Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology and the Korea Forest Service. That memorandum covered broader cooperation areas, including forest legislation reform, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem restoration.
As part of this growing partnership, Kazakh forest specialists have undergone training in South Korea, learning advanced techniques in reforestation and fire prevention.
Officials expect the new project to boost Kazakhstan’s efforts in sustainable forest restoration, enhance environmental resilience, and reduce climate-related and human-induced ecological threats.

Denisse is an intern at MCM. She is a senior at University of Maryland, looking forward to learning more about Montgomery County.
Her Dutch? She can read Dutch and understands a bit. Speaking is more difficult. ‘Some of my Dutch colleagues switch to Dutch more often now so that I can learn it. I welcome that. I would like to understand the language well. Not necessarily to use it to communicate - that works fine in English. But to understand the subtleties. The details. These inform you about the culture.
What drew you to Silicon Valley?‘I was attracted by the entrepreneurship. Apparently that is deeply embedded in the fiber of someone from Kayseri. Silicon Valley was booming. I really wanted to witness that. I guess it says something about the kind of person I am. I find it interesting to cross hurdles and challenge myself. But in the end, I always managed to survive, even if at times it was uncertain and challenging.'
To what extent does that reflect in the strategy?‘It is the very reason why I called our retail strategy I recently presented Be First. It is a reference to this distinct entrepreneurial culture. Each day anew, we should want to be the first. I believe in that. Consider history: the people who end up second are hardly remembered. The champions are. I see it as an obligation to the history and culture of ING to propagate these values.'
Are your parents proud of you?(Laughs). ‘I think so. My father unfortunately passed away. And my mother - you will have to ask her that yourself... She still does not quite understand what I do, and she thinks mostly that I travel too much and work too much, but I am sure she is very proud of me. And, like any Turkish mother, she always wants to know if I am eating well.’

Betelhem Abay: Student from Ethiopia aspires to fight medical plights with improved imaging
Betelhem Abay aspires to fight cancer and kidney failure by improving early detection technology
Fueled by passions for research and helping others
a University of Maine graduate from Addis Ababa
says she studies biomedical engineering so she can develop better computational models for biological-image analysis
These would serve as tools to be used in patient diagnosis
such as pinpointing signs of breast cancer and kidney failure at an early stage of development
Improving medical providers’ ability to spot major medical problems sooner
as well as decreasing the likelihood of misdiagnosis
“It’s very critical in developing and developed countries,” says Abay
who was also enrolled in the Honors College
Ethiopia struggles to combat kidney failure due to a lack of doctors
The situation in her home country inspired her interest in working toward developing improved medical imaging technology for early detection of kidney failures
Abay knew she wanted to study abroad for college
for universities with biomedical engineering and related programs
She was attracted by the reputation of the College of Engineering
but it was UMaine’s distinction as a research institution with professors who recruit students to assist with studies and experiments that sealed the deal
associate professor of biomedical engineering and director of the CompuMAINE Lab

The Honors College awarded her the Carolyn E
Reed Pre-Medical Honors Thesis Fellowship as a result
“Having the opportunity to work with very experienced and knowledgeable professors like him who are always ready to share their knowledge with undergraduate students has also been one of the greatest opportunities I got from UMaine,” she says
she learned one typical spring day last year that she was to be inducted into the All Maine Women honor society
She served the group as its social media chair and public relations representative
“To be a part of this organization is a recognition for my academics and leadership experience
and is a great opportunity to give back to the community that has helped me grow personally and professionally,” she says
Abay also was a member of Team Maine and participated in the Society of Women Engineers as the social chair
the Center for Student Involvement Emerging Leaders Program
and the Student Alumni Ambassadors program
She served as president of the African Student Association and as vice-president of the Honors Student Advisory Board
She will pursue a master’s degree in biomedical engineering

Fidel Castro Ruz - Fidel Soldado de Ideas
We can’t talk about Cuba without talking about Fidel
since the last 65 years of Cuban history were marked by his trajectory,” states Cuban historian Sissi Abay Díaz to Brasil de Fato
it's hard not to see the importance of Fidel Castro in Cuba's recent history
in a small town in the province of Holguín
Fidel Castro Ruz has shown extraordinary relevance to Cuba's social and political scene since his youth
Fidel was 33 years old when the Cuban Revolution triumphed in 1959
a historical process that would quickly become one of the most important events in Latin America and the Caribbean
The entire history of the second half of the 20th century on the continent was marked by the social and political influence ignited by this revolution in this small country that made “socialism speak Spanish for the first time.”
Cuban researcher and essayist Sissi Abay Díaz has studied the life and work of Fidel Castro
She wrote dozens of articles about different aspects of the life and legacy of the Cuban revolutionary
Abay Díaz is the vice director of the Fidel Castro Ruz Center
an institution dedicated to studying and popularizing his work
the researcher revisits some essential aspects of Castro’s revolutionary thoughts and trajectory in the recent celebration of his birth
Read below the main excerpts from the interview
Fidel understood that the only way to change the country was through an armed fight – and he did it
He waged a war that lasted a little more than two years and led him to power
the kind of power I wouldn’t like to have
Fidel was the president of the “Pro-Democracy Dominican Committee” of the National Undergraduate Federation
aimed at promoting different actions in solidarity with the Dominican people and against the dictatorship led by Rafael Trujillo
It was the initial international militancy that made him be elected as a delegate in an international student congress in 1948 under the patronage of the then Argentinian President Juan Domingo Perón
establishing contact with young people linked to the nationalist and anti-imperialist processes that were taking place in different parts of the continent
Fidel visited Bogotá to meet with popular leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán
who was then running for president of Colombia
the meeting never took place: on the same afternoon as the meeting
it was revealed that the CIA was involved in the assassination
The rapid contact Fidel made with social and anti-imperialist fights on the continent would mark his life forever
But it would be a few years later that Fidel's name would become famous in every corner of Cuba
Fidel ran for the House of Representatives of the Cuban Congress
the country was going through a serious economic and political crisis
General Fulgencio Batista carried out a coup d'état
His government's legitimacy was immediately recognized by Washington
Batista installed a repressive regime that sought to stifle any struggle that aimed to change the country.
Fidel was one of the main organizers of the attempted assault on the Moncada Barracks
131 young people – with an average age of 26 – tried to storm two military barracks to start a popular rebellion to overthrow Batista's dictatorship
The attack failed and dozens of these participants were killed by the dictatorship
Fidel Castro was arrested and subjected to a trial in which he chose to assume his own defense
The allegation of this trial is known as “History Will Absolve Me”
considered the first political document of the revolution in Cuba that would end up triumphing in 1959.
Fidel Castro (center) / Fidel Soldado de Ideas
Batista was finally forced to resign on December 31
marked the triumph of the Cuban Revolution
in front of thousands of people gathered in the central square of Santiago de Cuba
the Revolution really will come to power,” he said amid applause and shouts of joy
He then went on to list all the times the Cuban revolutionary and independence processes have been interrupted or betrayed
“The men who fell in our three wars of independence unite their efforts today with those who fell during the recent war; and to all our dead in the struggle for freedom
we can say that the time has finally come to realize their dreams.”
The fall of the dictatorship was only the beginning of a long and inexhaustible process of struggle to build popular power
in which the dreams of liberty are not closed within the institutions of power
“Fidel knew the costs of power in revolutionary processes
which transforms or disfigures the founding purposes,” says Professor Sissi Abay Díaz
recalling that the leader did not occupy the presidency despite the enormous relevance he already had
“The first institutional responsibility he took on in the government was because many people in important government posts didn't understand why a revolution was being made
Fidel spotted the danger of it being just another political process in which only the owners would change and some people would get richer
Manuel Urrutia Lleó was Cuban president after the fall of Batista
He soon left office to join the counter-revolutionary efforts organized in the United States
Fidel chose to dedicate his life to the poor and oppressed
He could have been a good lawyer defending just causes
he chose to interwind his fate with that of the people
“Only four months had passed since the adoption of the most important measure of the first stage of the Cuban Revolution: agrarian reform
the distribution of land to those who worked for it," explains Abay Díaz
this meant the importance of “the role given to the people
in the structure of the revolutionary power.”
Fidel Castro declared: “Without agrarian reform
there can be no revolutionary government." Just five months later
surrounded by members of the Council of Ministers
he signed the Agrarian Reform decree on top of a hill in Sierra Maestra
Fidel's own family's property was among the first to be distributed among poor farmers
donating everything he received to the Cuban people
“Fidel comes from a Jesuit background,” explains Abay Díaz
for whom “the severe spirit of the Jesuits and their discipline” had a profound impact on the revolutionary leader.
interviewed Fidel and asked him what would happen to Cuba when he was no longer there.” At that moment
Fidel gave him an extraordinary answer: he told him that he had always doubted the relativity of glory and
All the glory in the world fits in a grain of corn'.”
“Fidel dedicated himself to suffering the fate of others
To show solidarity with the causes that he felt most affected the essence of human beings
That is the greatest ethical lesson he could give.”
One of the things that most impresses foreign visitors in Cuba is the fact that there isn't a single statue of Fidel Castro or a single street named after him anywhere on the island
Fidel forbade any kind of homage to him after his death
aware that the only tribute worth paying is the affection of his people and that the only true triumph is the permanence of ideas
“Fidel was concerned about the cult of personality
And the man who believed he was in power would always be at a disadvantage compared to history,” says Ebay Díaz
“His main legacy was the Cuban people
things that we have to propose to do better in the difficult situation in which we had to build a process that was different from those before
And he always led us to what was worth saving in the revolutionary project
In his last speech to Cubans at the party congress
he said that 'the ideas of the Cuban communists will remain'
he declared that his main heir was his thought.”

I think it was time for me to get out of my comfort zone
I’m ready to take on a new big challenge and excited to join this large new family in Market Leaders
dividing my time between Amsterdam and Brussels
My son and daughter will go to school in Amsterdam
we want to learn about both cultures so we’ll spend a lot of time in Belgium as well
my husband and the kids are super excited and we plan to make the Benelux our new home
You feel the social equality and welfare across society
as I walk on the street I hear many languages
I lived in San Francisco and New York in addition to İstanbul
Amsterdam and Brussels are quite smooth compared to what I’m used to
My style is both challenging and caring at the same time
People will notice I expect them to grow and stretch their boundaries
I’m a big believer of personal growth at any stage in life
Maybe that is because I deeply care about people
I care about how they feel and how they grow
I also want to add that to me integrity is above all
When we work hard on realising our targets
there’s one goal that trumps all other: integrity
I think these two businesses are very different in scale but there are similarities too
They are both going through a transformation
Growth is not the metric to define success
I’ve never measured success only on financial metrics
Success is about creating a culture in which talent is nurtured
where people feel at home and can be themselves
Success is to have a culture in which people feel free to challenge each other to do better
Success is about doing good for our society
and leaving positive marks in everything we touch
financial results will always follow in a sustainable way

Why can’t we have a knife and fork like at any other place?” He has just unrolled a section of slightly rubbery injera
This is the fermented bread that’s at the heart of all Ethiopian and Eritrean and Somali dishes
you might be surprised how close they are to this
Because I’ve already taken a couple of jumps into food from this part of the globe — the top-right side of Africa — and wanted to come back
I’m trying to get my buddy to discover the rest of the world through his gut
And part of the Ethiopian deal is that they use a lot of familiar vegetables like cabbage and spinach and yellow split peas
The stews themselves are interesting and usually intense
I discovered this in the backs of places that often looked modest in front
but turned out to have rooms in the rear where they served incredible-tasting dishes
You might call this part of town Little Ethiopia
They have maybe half a dozen Ethiopian eateries scattered around here
He sat us down near some stairs leading up to more space
“That is going to be our main dining room,” he said
which are “baked or fried bread tossed in spiced butter
with vegetable or meat fillings.” We get one of each
but carrying a persistent spiciness (because
Choices start off with eggy breakfast dishes like firfir
which is small pieces of injera “diced in spicy Ethiopian stew.” Costs $10.99
He’s pointing to “Abay Special T’ibs (Chikina)
It’s “tenderloin tips sautéed in onion and hot green pepper and cooked with Ethiopian spiced butter.” Hmm
Even though it’s one of the more expensive dishes
I’m tempted by the meat combination dish of ye-beg siga wot (lamb stew)
turns out: he gets a circus of split lentil
“I want it to look like meat and potatoes,” he says
Tim’s veggies have been marinated with spiced butter and berbere sauce — a neat little red pyramid of it stands between the piles of veggies on the injera
but just eat it cautiously and taste how those flavors marinate in your mouth
Both have the injera on the tray plus ripped rolls of it around the edge to eat with the feast of sautéed tenderloin tips
specially with the gently sweet Ethiopian stout to drink
“‘Abay’ is our name for what you call the River Nile,” he says
I also have to know: “Is Ethiopian honey wine tej?”
it is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks ever made
Someone was drinking this stuff 9000 years ago
I also learn that Ethiopia is probably the oldest Christian country in the world
“Still got to get used to this injera stuff,” he says as he heads for his car
2025 (ENA)---The 19th Abay Day will be held coming Saturday in Addis Ababa
featuring a series of events on the theme "Strengthening Abay Cooperation for Climate Resilience and Shared Prosperity."
Ethiopia's Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Ittefa emphasized the importance of collaboration to manage the Abbay River
indicating that cooperation is the best way forward
Habtamu stated that Ethiopia has been actively engaging in a multitude of initiatives aimed at safeguarding the Abay River
including the implementation of various environmental protection measures to combat soil erosion
the minister emphasized the importance of protecting water resources
The Nile Basin Initiative has made significant progress
executing important projects and generating clean energy for neighboring countries
reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability
The provision of clean energy to neighboring countries and the consequent decrease in carbon emissions serve as a notable accomplishment in promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation
Ethiopia has planted over 40 billion seedlings as part of their reforestation efforts
with a significant portion of these seedlings being planted along the tributaries of the Abay River
The Minister stressed that in order to preserve the water
it is essential for all riparian countries to jointly prioritize the sustainable management and conservation of the river
Callist Tindimugaya on his part emphasized that the Nile riparian countries have been actively engaged in efforts to establish conducive conditions for the equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the Abay River
rather than focusing solely on the distribution of the water itself
The Abay River serves as a vital lifeline for over 500 million population residing in the basin countries
He elaborated the ongoing efforts to mitigate the potential risks that climate change poses to the river including sustainable development practices
restoring ecosystems and raising awareness among communities about the importance of preserving the river's health

I’ve just read that Molly Ticehurst is the 30th woman to be killed in Australia this year
a woman is murdered by a current or former partner in our country
Less than 10 days before Molly’s death
five women and one man were brutally murdered in Sydney’s Bondi Junction
It was an ordinary Saturday afternoon and the victims could have been anyone
that’s not entirely true – his behaviour indicated he was targeting women
These were mothers, wives, daughters, friends, partners, sisters, carers. If this all makes you feel uncomfortable, it should. It makes me so angry yet I also feel totally exhausted. How much louder can we scream? The gender-based violence needs to stop
“Australia must do better,” and at marie claire we won’t stop fighting until we see change
Finally, I also want to encourage you to sign Are Media’s petition for carers, because they are not valued enough. A primary carer will lose on average $175,000 in superannuation and $392,500 in lifetime earnings by the age of 67
which means women are primarily the ones who increase their financial vulnerability to look after someone they love
we’ll be asking the government to pay superannuation to recognised unpaid carers in Australia

September 30/2024 (ENA) Egypt needs to reassess the colonial era foreign policy it is pursuing against Ethiopia's development rights on the Abay (Nile River)
the veteran diplomat Ambassador Tiruneh Zena underscored
Ethiopia’s has been reiterating its unwavering aspiration for an equitable and reasonable use of water resources for its development endeavors without causing harm on downstream countries
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reassured to Egypt on several occasions that Ethiopia has no intention to cause harm on the downstream countries other than to meet its electric power demands
Ambassador Tiruneh said Ethiopia has already embarked on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) to meet its excessive energy demands and integrate the East African region through power by developing the Abay River
The country is now completing the construction of the dam
a colossal hydropower dam in the African continent and it is now partially generating electric power.
The diplomat recalled that Ethiopia has witnessed unprecedented and unwarranted accusations from Egypt over the last thirteen years
Tiruneh believed that Egypt pursued a policy of antagonism for centuries to keep Ethiopia weak
“The problem with Egypt is that they want to keep Ethiopia weak forever
I can say that they have been doing this for 100 years
But Ethiopia always resists this wrong approach,” he elaborated.
Ethiopia for the first time has come to the point where the country can utilize the Abay River for its development endeavors.
Ethiopia has a natural rights to utilize the water
Noting that Ethiopia realizes the importance of cooperation on this largest river flows
Tiruneh indicated that it has been now starting to utilize its water resource based on the international law without causing significant harm on others
Egypt has been still pursuing distorted foreign policy toward Ethiopia to undermine its rights on the Nile River.
Egypt and Ethiopia are evidently the biggest and historic nations in the region
peace and security of the region rather than disagree
Such a hostile narrative would destabilize the region.”
Ethiopia is doing a great job in that regard
adding it waited for many decades to meet the aspiration of utilizing its natural resources for development.
Ethiopia has witnessed numerous allegations following the laying of the cornerstone for the construction of GERD on the Abbay River from day one just to address its electric power shortages
the water goes to Egypt without any hindrance
But its problem is the policy that it maintains for 100 years
and cooperate together as well as help each other,” the diplomat underlined
Realizing that such vain exercise will never bear fruit
the veteran diplomat strongly urged Egypt to stop negative approaches against Ethiopia and its futile attempt to weaken the country
Tiruneh stated that: “It will be in vain that they are trying this and that to weaken Ethiopia
Ethiopia is becoming stronger and stronger.”
ROCHESTER — Rochester welcomed its first Ethiopian store earlier this summer
Adey Abeba General Import and Ethiopian Store is an Ethiopian store that carries a variety of cultural items and Ethiopian food options
is Ethiopian and knows the struggle of finding ingredients for traditional foods
but has friends in the Ethiopian community in Rochester
Abay spent time in Rochester and announced his plans to the St
He was met with positive feedback and excitement
“We studied the community over here,” said Abay
“We sat and discussed and when I told our friends here
when we told them (they were) very happy.”
He knew there wasn’t anywhere to get certain Ethiopian ingredients in the area and people were coming to the cities two to four times a month for these items
They buy two or three (bags of injera) for a week or for 15 days,” he said
Injera is sour in taste due to the fermentation process the bread goes through
It is made with flax and barley flour and is typically finger food with dips and sauces
The ingredients to make injera can all be purchased at Adey Abebe
The actual skillet used to cook the injera is also available at the store
It’s one of the many merchandise in the store that isn’t food
a traditional Ethiopian basket used to store and serve injera
It’s a colorful woven basket that families will gather around to eat
There is also a large variety of tea and coffee dishes
They have traditional coffee pots to go with the Ethiopian coffee beans they sell in store
Ethiopia is widely considered the birthplace of coffee and is one of the leading coffee producers
It’s known to have a unique flavor profile and Abay is setting up a coffee room in the store
Beyond the food items available at the store
there are also a variety of cosmetic items for sale
They have a large variety of traditional clothing from dresses to bags and shoes
belts and shoes are made from leather and Abay is happy with the diversity of styles and patterns they have
Abay is happy with the items they currently have and is excited to continue to meet the Rochester community
but are planning to do something in the near future

I made it and while there was one incident which involved my baby falling out of the pram
While those blurry days of newborn life might be a distant memory and I now mostly sleep through the night
I still remember those first few months after I became a mother for the very first time
there is nothing that can prepare you for new motherhood
It’s the hardest competition of your life
where no one wins and everyone feels they have the right to mark you on your performance.
You can’t go to university to become a good mother
It doesn’t matter what grades you got at school
left feeling rather perplexed by our firstborn
I should add that there’s also no good or bad way to mother
The only thing that helps is laughing at yourself
I was the kind of person who had yearned for a baby her entire life
I’d imagined I’d be quite good at it
simply because I’d wanted it so much
I was the kind of woman who loved holding other people’s babies
Who screamed with excitement when someone told me they were pregnant
When my firstborn Arabella arrived and my eyes were opened to the shocking reality of sore nipples
I was left with the realisation that all of it was so much more complicated than I’d imagined
Well-meaning women on the street would stop and tell me to enjoy every moment
Nothing was going fast. I just wanted to sleep

we spend so much time organising the first
that we forget about the fourth trimester – the one between birth and 12 weeks – which is perhaps the most important of all
It’s the one where you meet the person you’ve been carrying around for nine months (seven in my case – both my girls were premature)
‘The “baby bubble” is not just a term; it is a physical and biological necessity.’ It’s the trimester where we’re introduced to our new life and co-worker (the baby)
I’d often be so close to drifting off
only to hear a little stirring in the bassinet
because my baby had shocking reflux and didn’t sleep
until there was no choice but to get up and settle her
it had only been 20 minutes since we’d last repeated this routine
To stay awake until 6am. It was only then we’d both crash and finally sleep for a couple of hours

the post-partum period was like one big blurry hangover
only there was no party and I’d been sober for months
I don’t think I ever thrived during the first year of motherhood
I felt constantly jetlagged and like I was losing my mind
The old me wanted to dress up in nice clothes without fear of avocado being catapulted across the room at me – how had the kitchen turned into a war zone where I was the unarmed target and the assassin was a pint-sized baby
We don’t like to talk about how hard it is becoming a mother for the first time
This lack of awareness around not only the fourth trimester
was one of the reasons the old me and the new me struggled to get along
The old me couldn’t believe the underwear the new me was wearing
The new me was grappling with an identity crisis
The enormous skin-coloured underwear didn’t help.
as I hopped aboard the mothership armed with a fail-proof plan of my new life
was just how raw and open motherhood leaves you
motherhood irreversibly changes you – and it changed me more than I can ever possibly describe
but ‘clichés are clichés for a reason
I didn’t realise how much motherhood would change not just my life
It colours absolutely everything – from logistics to love.’
like permanent markers that never come out in the wash
we cannot plan what becoming a mother for the first time looks like
while others appear annoyingly effortless (the babies who sleep through the night from week one
When you feel you’re at breaking point
I know to imply it is all this simple is naive
and privilege makes motherhood a very different narrative
but just knowing that being a parent has a plan of its own that we can’t control and that nothing lasts forever
I did make it through my first year of motherhood
I’m still climbing up and down Everest most days
All I know is that motherhood has been the making of me
It has gifted me the greatest two loves of my life
