However, it has been steadily shrinking since 1995, with water levels dropping by over two metres. Scientists predict its surface area could decline by 30 per cent by the end of the century This alarming trend is fuelled by climate change – rising temperatures and increased evaporation – along with human activities such as the construction of numerous reservoirs along its primary tributary The shallow northern basin of the Caspian Sea is the most severely impacted and faces the prospect of vanishing entirely in the coming decades The repercussions are dire for biodiversity and for coastal communities which are losing their livelihoods and contending with increasingly difficult living conditions French journalist Clément Girardot and photographer Julien Pebrel went on a journey along the Caspian Sea’s receding coastline in the Atyrau region to see what live looks like for the Kazakh residents grappling with the uncertain future of their sea the largest Kazakh city near the Caspian Sea with a population of approximately 350,000 has long struggled with severe air pollution The city is encircled by numerous polluting infrastructures and several facilities for the storage and transportation of natural gas and oil Atyrau’s residents are equally troubled by another environmental crisis: the shrinking of the Caspian Sea The level of public communication is almost non-existent,” says Mustafa a local resident fishing in the Ural River “The decline started in the 2000s and has accelerated since 2015 the shoreline has retreated 30 kilometres to the south but even more concerning is the collapse of its biodiversity,” says Arman Khairullin an environmental activist and independent deputy of the Atyrau Regional Council the last village on the Ural River before it meets the Caspian Sea once thrived on fishing cooperatives during the Soviet era with declining fish populations and bans on fishing certain species Many men in the region now work shifts in oil fields The older generation still heads out to sea out of nostalgia but younger people rarely do so anymore because there just aren’t enough fish,” says 28-year-old local Damba’s population is increasing despite the decline of the fishing industry Single-story houses are springing up along straight quiet streets with well-maintained sidewalks enclosed by fences and designed with few windows to shield against the wind and heat are drawing new residents in search of affordable housing and cleaner air than in downtown Atyrau Reaching the mouth of the Ural River from Damba requires a boat The seabed there is only 20 to 30 centimetres below the surface dredging the channel to allow boats to reach the open sea and to enable fish to migrate upstream to their spawning grounds “The goal is to dig a channel 2.5 metres deep and 40 metres wide the mouth of the Ural River sometimes runs completely dry,” says Khairullin many fishing towns once built along the seashore now only have access to the sea through channels Berik Akhmetov operates a small pool where sturgeons are raised – a project he started four years ago these fish are too small; it takes 10 to 12 years of farming to grow an adult specimen They will eventually be sold for both their meat and their caviar,” he explains The entrepreneur also plans to release some juvenile sturgeons into the wild The five Caspian nations are required to take such measures in an effort to prevent the species’ extinction although the impact has been minimal so far Located 70 kilometrs west of the regional capital Zhanbay used to be a thriving fishing town we could see the water from the roof of this building the shoreline is 20 kilometres away,” says Didar Yesmoukhanov the mayor of Zhanbay in Western Kazakhstan The sea’s disappearance has drastically transformed the economy and way of life in this once-bustling fishing community Camel breeding has become an alternative source of income in this arid region As fishing activities decline and living conditions worsen some residents are being forced to leave the village a man in his thirties who grew up in Zhanbay but had to migrate to Atyrau to seek better opportunities He now lives in the regional capital but often visits his family in Zhanbay A more drastic drying up of the Caspian Sea would disrupt the lives of millions of shoreline residents and could trigger even larger migratory movements Another consequence of the sea’s retreat is the increasing desertification of coastal areas and more frequent sandstorms which negatively affect the health of both residents and animals the wind carries salty dust that is very harmful to animals,” laments Ibragim Bozakhaev a 68-year-old resident whose garden contains apricot trees His daughter-in-law is personally affected by the sandstorms they’re so strong that we can’t even see our garden I’ve developed an allergy to the dust; it’s a very difficult season for me,” says Asel Sheruyenova On the border between Kazakhstan and Russia This wetland has long been a sanctuary for birds and fish but it has also been deeply affected by the environmental crisis “The water level has been dropping for five years now and mud is accumulating in the canals,” says Satti Boldi an oil industry worker from the town of Kurmangazy The increasing aridity is also contributing to a rise in wildfires in both the Russian and Kazakh parts of the Delta the area affected by catastrophic fires in the Delta grew by 34 per cent between 2010 and 2020 Time may be running out to find a solution for the Caspian. In November 2022, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev described the situation as “acute” during a speech and called for the creation of a research institute focused on studying the Caspian Sea The government officially approved the project in January 2024 but the institute has yet to be established Equal Times is a trilingual news and opinion website focusing on labour politics and the economy fifth century B.C The discoveries suggest the western Atyrau region More than 1,000 artifacts have now been recovered from the region's burial mounds and around 100 were gold ornaments and jewelry of the "animalistic" Sarmatian style "Images of predators that inhabited the region at that time — leopards tigers — can be seen on the found items," Kassenov said The team also unearthed human remains, ceramics, two wooden bowls — a rare find because wood usually decays in burials — and two black "touchstones" with gold handles which were probably used to reveal the purity of metals Related: been recovered from Sarmatian burial mounds in the Atyrau region Many of the finds were made during excavations in 2023 and 2024 of the "Karabau-2" burial mound in the Atyrau region Such burial mounds are known as "kurgans" in Eastern Europe from a Turkish word for "mound" that was adopted in many Slavic languages The Karabau-2 kurgan stands about 10 feet (3 meters) high at its peak and forms a circular mound with a diameter of about 230 feet (70 m) The archaeologists determined that it had been used for at least nine individual burials of which only two had been plundered by looters —Large yielded iron and bronze weapons, as well as jewelry, household items, and silver "pictograms" representing a saiga antelope and a wolf. One grave also contained a gold bracelet weighing about 13 ounces (370 grams). The high value of the artifacts suggests the kurgans had been burial sites for wealthy or even "royal" Sarmatians, the statement said. The significant expansion of this facility was a result of comprehensive reconstruction, directed by President Tokayev’s under the supervision of Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister, Alikhan Smailov. The upgraded Astrakhan-Mangyshlak pipeline will provide an additional 60,000 cubic meters of water to the population, enterprises, and agriculture of Atyrau and Mangystau regions. The project includes the renewal of worn-out equipment and the replacement of two sections of the main pipeline, totaling about 177 km in length. As a result, the throughput capacity of the Astrakhan-Mangyshlak water pipeline increased from 110,000 to 170,000 cubic meters per day. “The reconstruction of the water pipeline was completed a year ahead of schedule due to accurate design solutions and rapid construction rates. This marks just one of many large-scale projects planned for the region,” Smailov said. Additionally, a desalination plant capable of producing 50,000 cubic meters of water per day is currently under construction in the village of Kenderli. From this plant, a 105 km long main water pipeline will be built to Zhanaozen.
