LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A regular afternoon commute Thursday nearly turned deadly for Henderson resident David Bakanas
"I saw this black dot coming at me," Bakanas said
"I was like 'I need to get out of the way because this is a vehicle traveling at me at a high rate of speed.'"
Bakanas was able to move over a lane as he continued on his trek westbound on the 215 Beltway near Centennial Hills
driven by a man going the wrong way on the 215
According to the Nevada Department of Public Safety
four fatal wrong-way crashes took place in the state in 2023
but so far this year — not even halfway through the year — that number has been eclipsed
"It's happened several times just in the last couple of months," said Trooper Shawn Haggstrom of the Nevada State Police
Our dedicated troopers are out here trying to make all the stops."
The moment the black SUV passes Bakanas is captured on his dash cam
The video has made the rounds on social media
"I was just driving defensively," Bakanas said
I was kind of trying to make it so that none of the other drivers around me were affected."
That's because it happened during daylight hours — most wrong-way crashes happen at night — on a busy stretch of highway
just as rush hour was beginning in the valley
according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety
five deadly wrong-way crashes occurred in the state
"I wish I could have done something to prevent what happened," Bakanas said
You're always worried about people going the right direction when you're out driving
now you have to worry about people going the wrong direction."

Devin and Maranda Barrett are always looking for fun family adventures
14 when they found an event not only for the girls but their 14-month hound
Leon was one of the stars of the first Children’s Dog Show hosted by the Hendersonville Kennel Club in a grassy lot near the Salvation Army in downtown Hendersonville
a fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree fund
who competed in classes from obedience and best trick to the best costume and longest ears
including the top award in the “longest ears” category
Ten-month-old Norah Barrett won the Pee Wee class by showing her stuffed horse
We couldn’t be happier,” Maranda Barrett said as the family packed their winnings — including a large gift basket Lilly scored in a raffle — into a stroller
including first place in the “best trick” class
Some of their other wins came in the obedience
“waggiest tail” and “longest-tail” classes
and the pair came in second in “best costume,” with Hattie in a jockey’s outfit and Bear in a saddle posing as the first female jockey
Twelve-year-old Cailyn Case competed with Max
who stayed warm in his fox costume and came in second in the “smallest dog” class
Cailyn said the two came out Saturday “just for fun.”
took first place in the costume class with Kali
a 5-year-old poodle dressed in a colorful hula skirt outfit
Hanka Miller and her 2-year-old wirehaired dachshund Perec also won several ribbons
including first in the smallest dog category and third in the costume contest
was joined at the show by her siblings Virtus
All three dogs follow commands in Hungarian
The event was a chance to encourage children to work with their dogs and gain experience showing
as well as raise funds for the Salvation Army
which allows the club to use its facilities
Club member Corliss Bakanas said she hopes the dog show
inspired by club President Terri Everwine’s experiences showing as a child in Chicago
“I think it went fairly well,” said club member and event emcee Elaine Randall
adding that the goals were to have fun and get children interested in dogs
“Hopefully it will take off and we’ll do it again.”
The event included several demos by club members
Randall said the demos show adults and families the different work they can do at home with their pups
scent work and rally classes to the public

Sentencing was delayed Thursday for a man convicted of killing one woman and severely injuring another in a January 2021 shooting in downtown Bloomington
The hearing to reschedule a sentencing date was Michael Bakana’s first court appearance since he was captured by authorities in May after he fled to Kentucky instead of attending his trial. Bakana was convicted of the murder in the shooting death of Mariah Petracca and wounding of Bibi Cornejo
The sentencing is now scheduled for July 24
when Judge Casey Costigan will also rule on a defense motion for a new trial
Bakana surveyed the courtroom gallery Thursday when he entered and later acknowledged a family member who arrived later at the hearing
The jury found Bakana guilty of the felony charges on May 12 after a weeklong trial conducted in his absence
The 44-year-old defendant cut off an ankle monitor the morning of the trial and left Illinois for Kentucky
Bakana was freed on bail after posting the required $200,000 of his $2 million bond
Costigan revoked the bond when the defendant failed to come to court for the trial
defense lawyer Clyde Guillamo asked that the bond be released for legal fees and potential restitution
Guillamo argued that a new state law currently under Illinois Supreme Court review would remove the bond forfeiture provisions as part of a law to end cash bail
Guillamo was previously paid $50,000 from Bakana’s bond
Bakana’s family and brother “put the money together to secure his release,” and should not suffer financially because of the forfeiture
The defense also argued that Bakana’s return to McLean County was within the 30 days outlined in state law for the reversal of a bond forfeiture
Prosecutor Jeff Horve challenged the defense claim on Bakana’s return
noting that the defendant was escorted back to Illinois by federal marshals
The judge has discretion to make a portion of the bond available for restitution and legal fees
The judge took the bond issue under advisement
