Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Kazakhstan within the framework of the "Strengthening Pandemic Prevention and Response through the One Health Approach" project (GCP/SEC/027/PAF) implemented with financial support from the Pandemic Fund organized training workshops for veterinarians of local executive bodies in Zhetysu region The event focused on antimicrobial resistance and biosecurity in farms and peasant households highlighting the global challenge of microbial resistance to antimicrobials The workshops took place on March 17-18 in Karabulak village of Eskeldy district and Balpyk-Bi village of Koksu district with the support of the Veterinary Control and Supervision Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan The primary objective was to raise awareness among specialists about the rational use of antimicrobials modern approaches to monitoring and controlling antibiotic use in veterinary practice and essential biosecurity measures when visiting potentially contaminated farms The challenge of antimicrobial resistance is particularly critical in veterinary medicine as the uncontrolled use of antibiotics for animal treatment and feed additives contributes to the development of microbial resistance FAO reports that approximately 60% of infectious diseases in humans originate from animals (zoonotic diseases) and the misuse of antimicrobials in agriculture accelerates the spread of resistant strains posing threats to both animal and human health while also endangering food security FAO experts provided hands-on training in biosecurity practices that are essential for preventing the spread of diseases in animals and reducing economic losses for farmers due to treatment costs and animal mortality Participants learned about the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) disinfection of tools and laboratory materials and regular health monitoring of livestock the training introduced modern digital technologies in veterinary medicine mobile applications for animal health monitoring These tools enable more effective biosecurity management by enhancing control and response capabilities These workshops are part of FAO's nationwide initiative to increase awareness among veterinary professionals and farmers about the global threat of antimicrobial resistance and to promote alternative sustainable animal health management practices live_help the KFF management held a series of meetings with the UEFA leadership in 2022 to obtain funding for the implementation
