The Harvard Graduate School of Education embarked on a semester-long initiative to build community and support dialogue across differences by bringing the Can We Talk? discourse series to Askwith Hall on Friday
created by actor Penn Badgley and Nura Mowzoon
is designed to foster meaningful conversations and explore how interpersonal dialogue can create change
Inviting audience participation and openness
the series asks those in attendance to consider how deeper dialogue could change their communities for the better
actually started as a conversation between the two hosts
an instructor at Arizona State University whose work focuses on relationships
initially invited Badgley to speak in one of her classes following the success of his Netflix show
The two formed a partnership and designed the discourse series’ format
though holding events at college campuses was briefly put on pause during the COVID-19 pandemic
“In our conversations we realized the same principles that make romantic relationships work are the same principles which are necessary for any kind of interpersonal relationship to work
being willing to be uncomfortable.” said Mowzoon
“We wanted to kind of stretch it out into a conversation about meaningful dialogue during such charged times.”
The event began with a brief introduction from Senior Lecturer Gretchen Brion-Meisels
who worked with Badgley and Mowzoon to bring the program to campus
“They believe that meaningful conversations are foundational to social change,” says Brion-Meisels
noting she shares this belief in her own work at the Ed School
“Whether we’re working to support transformation in individual young folks
or within organizations or larger socio-political systems
we understand that dialogue is critical to fostering individual and collective growth.”
Badgley and Mowzoon then provided a framework for students to engage with one another in an effort to find points of unity
The free-flowing discussion centered on two large questions posted by Badgley and Mowzoon: can people change
and what do you risk losing if you humanize the enemy
“We really want to have a dialogue today,” said Badgley
framing the conversation at the event’s onset
The event was the first of HGSE’s Sonder Project
a series of events and workshops which will take place throughout the spring semester
is designed to help the HGSE community develop a common language
and frameworks for practicing pluralism and engaging in constructive conflict
we have a unique opportunity as educators to develop and equip individuals with the skills to listen to each other's stories and recognize our shared human experience by fostering interpersonal dialogue and communication across differences,” said Jarrod Chin
“By drawing on the expertise of faculty and student leaders
our office will offer carefully designed micro-learnings for self-reflection
Badgley and Mowzoon encouraged those in attendance to take part in other Sonder Project activities – such as somatic practices
and narrative storytelling sessions – and reflect on their own journeys when the two return for an event in May

The additional cash brings the startup’s total Series A haul to over $140 million and will support a medicine it’s readying for mid-stage testing
Like many biotech startups invested in neurology research
Nura is working on ways to prevent the death of neurons that occurs in a number of brain diseases
it’s working on medicines that slow the deterioration of axons
the tails of nerve cells that transmit electrical impulses
that’s involved in the degeneration of axons
preserve the structure and function of axons
which should “halt the degenerative process,” according to Sambashivan
Preclinical research published in the journal Neuron in 2022 showed the potential of SARM1 inhibition to protect against neuronal injury
Nura has since pushed NB-4726 through an initial trial in healthy volunteers
and found it was safe enough to move into further testing
The company believes it has “broad therapeutic potential,” Sambashivan said
arguing that it could conceivably have a role in treating diseases of the central
Nura is currently narrowing down which indication to pursue first
The company intends to reveal more about the rest of its pipeline in the upcoming months
The capital raise announced Tuesday builds on an initial $73 million in Series A funding the company secured four years ago
Nura opted to add to the existing round rather than start a new one so it could get through a few critical “derisking milestones” first
among them accumulating data in actual patients
Another fundraising could follow shortly thereafter
you’re perpetually in fundraising mode,” Sambashivan said
Sambashivan has been with the company since its inception in 2018
when it was spun out of research from Marc Freeman at the Vollum Institute at Oregon Health & Science University and Steven McKnight at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
She was previously Nura’s chief scientific officer
but took on the lead role as the company moved into clinical testing
The company was formerly led by Alpna Seth
a former executive at Biogen and Vir Biotechnology
Nura Bio has successfully transitioned to a clinical-stage organization

Actor Penn Badgley and relationship therapist Dr. Nura Mowzoon led a discussion with the Emerson community about the impact of media and psychology on everyday relationships as part of the College’s EmersonTogether initiative
took place at the Cutler Majestic Theatre on October 16
The series promotes thoughtful dialogue to reduce societal polarization
encouraging participants to examine how media influences human interactions
“Our belief is that social change happens when we can have meaningful conversations with people,” said Badgley
best known for his role as Dan Humphrey on Gossip Girl
“Which is why we try to make this [event] as much of a dialogue as possible.”
Mowzoon said that as a professor at Arizona State University
she realized how much students’ views on relationships were shaped by what they’ve seen in the media
“And who better to talk about that with than Joe Goldberg,” she joked
referring to Badgley’s character on the show You
Badgley talked about how villains impact societal perceptions of relationships
creating an “other” that reflects how narratives shape our views of those who differ from us
“Hollywood has been exploiting storytelling to the world for the last 100 years in the most compelling fashion
It has had this incredible influence on the way we imagine relationships to function
and has led us to constantly imagine an ‘other,’” said Badgley
“We are perceiving an antagonist that is more in our own minds than is what’s out in the world
Why are we creating this concept of the ‘other’ in our mind
Mowzoon offered a psychological perspective on division and society’s tendency toward it.
“The most universal fundamental ability you have is to connect
universal need that arises from our nature as humans and serves as our strongest drive,” Mowzoon said
you can’t identify a ‘them’ without simultaneously recognizing an ‘us,’ and this sense of belonging amplifies our motivations for division
as it helps us feel more aligned with those we identify with at that moment.”
She added that by labeling the “other” as a villain
we create a framework in which heroes and villains coexist
“You can’t have the villain without having the hero
and this is one of the most basic principles of media,” said Mowzoon
Badgley and Mowzoon emphasized the importance of fostering meaningful conversations
despite the increasingly volatile public discourse
“We really want to explore what becomes possible when we can speak without fear
and listen without defensiveness,” said Badgley
Mowzoon said it’s a lot easier to cut toxic people out of your life
you need to reflect on why they make you uncomfortable.
“Adapt to being uncomfortable because the world is full of people who aren’t going to make you feel warm and fuzzy all the time,” she said

Nura Bio aims to treat neurodegeneration with a small molecule designed to block SARM1
a novel target involved in axon degeneration
Following positive Phase 1 results in healthy volunteers
the startup is now preparing for mid-stage clinical testing
Neurodegenerative disorders progress in a variety of ways
but one characteristic many of them share is the breakdown of axons
a cable-like fiber that extends from a neuron and transmits electrical signals
While scientists have long known about axon degeneration
Nura Bio’s lead drug candidate blocks a novel target associated with this damage to axons and the startup now has $68 million to proceed to a Phase 2 test
The new financing announced Tuesday was led by founding investor The Column Group
South San Francisco-based Nura Bio announced the appointment of Shilpa Sambashivan as CEO and a member of the company’s board of directors
The initial target of Nura Bio’s research is SARM1
an enzyme that is involved in axonal degeneration
SARM1 is not activated in healthy people and if it has a role in states of health
That activation can be sparked by a chemical injury
“We all know that axon degeneration is important,” said Sambashivan
who was part of Nura Bio’s founding team and previously served as the startup’s chief scientific officer
“We thought of it as a passive process
There is actually a mechanism in axons that is sensitive to changes in the environment.”
Nura Bio aims to stop axon degeneration with a brain-penetrating drug that inhibits SARM1
recently completed Phase 1 testing in healthy volunteers
Sambashivan said results showed the twice-daily pill was well tolerated with no adverse effects
Scientists confirmed that the drug penetrated into the brain by measuring for it in cerebrospinal fluid
Sambashivan said the Phase 1 test was unable to show whether NB-4746 engaged SARM1 in the healthy volunteers because the enzyme is activated only in states of disease
Showing the drug’s effect on the target enzyme will come with the next stage of clinical testing
Sambashivan acknowledged ALS is one potential indication for Nura Bio’s NB-4746. Others include multiple sclerosis and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. In 2022, the company published research in the journal Neuron showing SARM1 inhibitors were neuroprotective in preclinical models of nerve injury and neuropathy
Reduction of NfL levels was a key measure of this research
While Nura Bio believes its lead program has potential applications in a wide range of neurological disorders
Sambashivan said the company is still determining which indication to choose first to demonstrate proof of biology
Nura Bio’s approach is based on the SARM1 research of scientific founders Marc Freeman of Oregon Health & Science University and Steven McKnight of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
The startup’s drugs (additional pipeline details and drug targets remain undisclosed) were all discovered within the company
Asked what differentiates Nura Bio’s approach from Disarm’s
Sambashivan said all Nura Bio knows about the Disarm research is what is in the public domain
She added that her company does not have additional insight to offer at this time
Nura Bio’s new financing adds to a $73 million Series A financing announced in 2020
extending the round’s total to $141 million
Sanofi Ventures joined the latest round as a new investor
Other participants include earlier investors Samsara Bio Capital and Euclidean Capital
Sambashivan said the new capital is enough to get Nura Bio’s lead program to the end of the proof-of-biology clinical trial
Even though Nura Bio just closed the additional financing
the startup is already preparing for the next round
“Once you get to the clinical stage and you’re moving more molecules into the clinic
you’re always raising,” Sambashivan said

The latest funding brings the total funds raised by the company to more than $140m with $73m in an initial Series A round in 2020
with continued support from Samsara Bio Capital and Euclidean Capital
Nura Bio’s recent funding milestone coincides with the successful completion of Phase I studies for its lead clinical candidate
NB-4746 has demonstrated potential in preventing axon degeneration and offering neuroprotection in preclinical models of nerve injury and disease

A group of youths had earlier raised the alarm
insisting that nothing must happen to Comrade Nura Usman Kowa Naka.
In a distressing turn of events that has raised fresh concerns about freedom of expression and human rights in Nigeria
has petitioned the National Security Adviser
and continued political detention of Kaduna-based social media commentator
They lamented that the Kaduna State government must rescind its alleged plan to arrest a youth activist and advocate for good governance who had exposed a purported conspiracy between government officials and student union leaders regarding the ongoing ASUU strike at Kaduna State University
"No amount of threats or intimidation will deter patriots from holding leaders accountable and demanding good governance

Democratic leadership is not designed to resist opposition but trained to withstand it.
"Dissenting views are the catalyst that strengthens democracy

#StandWithNuraUsman #FreeSpeech #GoodGovernance #Kaduna #ASUU #KASU," the youths declared
Usman was abducted on the night of April 30 by heavily armed operatives of Operation Fushin Kada
a joint security task force comprising personnel from the Nigerian Army
The legal team claims that the arrest was ordered by powerful officials within the Kaduna State Government
allegedly in retaliation for Facebook posts made by Mr
Usman on April 28 and 29 that criticized certain government policies
the firm detailed a harrowing account of how the couple was intercepted near Bayero University
Usman is currently undergoing a postgraduate program.

He reportedly confirmed the involvement of certain operatives identified as Mr
who claimed to belong to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB)
Nura Usman remains in detention at an Operation Fushin Kada facility on Constitution Road
with no access to legal counsel or family members.
The firm is urging the National Security Adviser to launch an independent investigation into what it calls a “systemic abuse of state power for political repression.”
The petition emphasises that the actions of the task force violate several constitutional provisions
and protection from inhuman and degrading treatment — as enshrined in Sections 34
and 39 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
and supported by both African and Universal human rights charters
The law firm is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Mr
Usman and a halt to all further harassment
warning that failure to act would deepen public mistrust in state institutions and embolden rogue elements within the security apparatus."
The petition partly reads; "We are solicitors to Mrs
Kaduna — a potential politician with a bright future
"Our client has informed us as follows: That on the 30th of April
she and her husband were peacefully walking out of Bayero University
Usman is enrolled in a master’s/postgraduate program — when heavily armed men identified as members of Operation Fushin Kada surrounded them and whisked Mr
"He was bundled into the trunk of a vehicle
"When our client attempted to speak up for her husband
They pointed guns at her head and threatened to shoot her if she asked any further questions
"She only learnt the details behind her husband’s arrest and whereabouts after Mr
Adnan Mukhtar Tudun Wada — a close friend of Mr
that he had also been detained by Operation Fushin Kada
He had been lured by a fake phone call claiming to be from a DHL delivery agent
Tudun Wada encountered the same operatives — Mr
Sunday — who allegedly claimed affiliation with the SIB and confirmed that Mr
Usman was arrested on orders from powerful officials within the Kaduna State Government over his Facebook posts of April 28 and 29
Screenshots of these posts have been attached as Annexures A and B
"All efforts by our client to contact her husband have been unsuccessful
The operatives of Operation Fushin Kada have reportedly vowed to ‘silence’ and ‘vanish’ him from the political space
"We respectfully urge your office to immediately launch a detailed investigation into the activities of Operation Fushin Kada
with the aim of bringing all those responsible to justice
we demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mr
Nura Usman and the cessation of all threats and intimidation against him and other citizens in similar situations,” the petition added.

dozens of paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters surrounded Wad al-Nura
The village in the west of Sudan's Gezira state had remained relatively peaceful over 14 months of war
and at times had acted as a refuge for people from neighbouring areas escaping RSF attacks
the paramilitary fighters had Wad al-Nura in their sights
local farmers dug trenches at the village’s entrances and filled them with water
hoping makeshift moats would help protect them
former soldiers and police officers armed themselves and erected a small checkpoint
According to pro-democracy activists in Wad Madani
the fighters ringing the village opened fire
beginning a frenzy of shooting in all directions
The sources in the Madani Resistance Committee said the slaughter appeared systematic
Hundreds were sent scattering seeking safety
the world has been warning of an impending massacre in al-Fasher
But while all eyes were trained on the North Darfur state capital
paramilitary fighters were rampaging through Gezira state
Several sources told MEE that 150 people were killed in Wad al-Nura alone
Around 100 were buried in a mass grave in a public square
And though that massacre has brought condemnation from foreign governments
a wave of violence has gripped Sudan with sources saying hundreds were killed in various parts of the country over the past two days alone
Witnesses have described thousands of Sudanese fleeing for their lives as RSF fighters face little to no resistance from Sudan’s army
These attacks have been seen in White Nile
North Kordofan and South Kordofan states in recent days
Khartoum’s sister city on the western side of the Nile
where 40 people were killed on Tuesday according to activists
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have responded with air strikes
which sources on the ground said had led to more death and destruction for the civilian population
Yet the Gezira state resistance committees
part of a country-wide network of pro-democracy activists
published footage of the massacre showing RSF troops using heavy guns and artillery against the villagers
“The village of Wad al-Nura has witnessed a genocide,” it said
“SAF hasn’t provided any kind of protection to the civilians.”
It said Islamist militias had armed the village’s residents
who it claimed were preparing to attack the RSF
The paramilitary force has been battling the Sudanese army since conflict between the former allies broke out in April last year. Since then, an estimated 150,000 people have been killed
nine million displaced and parts of Sudan brought to the brink of famine
Sudan’s military has struggled against the RSF’s more nimble and battle-hardened fighters
But in recent months it has made some gains by importing Iranian drones and swelling its ranks with former rebels
civilian volunteers and other armed groups
The RSF claimed that the army and allied “jihadist” militias had gathered in three camps to the west of Wad al-Nura and neighbouring al-Mangali
It said it captured heavy weapons and lost eight fighters in its Wednesday raids
Sudanese who have recently fled Gezira told Middle East Eye that communities across the state are mobilizing in self-defence
who is currently in Gadaref and spoke anonymously for security reasons
said resistance against the RSF has taken many forms
including attempts to negotiate and ensure civilians’ safety
'The people of Gezira have the right to defend themselves as long as the RSF want to kill them'
“The people of Gezira have the right to defend themselves as long as the RSF want to kill them and the army is derelict in its duty to defend civilians and the entire country,” the source said
which witnessed wide violations and attempts to defend themselves
We tried to collect money from our sons living abroad to buy weapons and establish small groups to defend ourselves
But the gap between us and the RSF is huge
Sources in and from Gezira said the villages of al-Husa
have been subjected to vicious attacks in recent weeks
a resident of al-Duem in White Nile state west of Gezira
told MEE that the RSF attacked villages there too
Hundreds of youths in these areas have formed defence groups
which nominally operate under the command of the SAF
The RSF tends to characterize these groups as being backed by elements of ousted president Omar al-Bashir’s former government
see their mobilization as evidence of popular rejection of the paramilitary force
some political parties have voiced concerns that the arming of civilians will further complicate and prolong Sudan’s conflict
Civilian mobilization is ongoing around al-Fasher
where the military and former rebel groups are arming residents in anticipation of an RSF offensive
a resident who has taken up weapons told MEE
“I see that the popular armed resistance is spread everywhere and it’s gradually uniting the Sudanese to defend their country,” he said
The prospect of an offensive on al-Fasher has caused concern for weeks. The RSF has closed off almost all routes out of the city, risking al-Fasher becoming a “kill box” if attacked
RSF fighters have raided camps surrounding the city where Sudanese displaced in the 2003-2005 Darfur conflict are residing
The backbone of the RSF is made up of fighters that belonged to the infamous Janjaweed militias that terrorized those same Black African populations two decades ago
said the RSF attacked Abu Shook camp last week
burning it to the ground and forcing its residents away
especially in the city of al-Fasher in North Darfur state
Everyone is doomed to die from starvation or due to deliberate indiscriminate bombing by the parties to the conflict,” Rojal told MEE
Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in need
exhausted by hunger and living in unspeakably horrific conditions.”
spokesman of the Sudan Liberation Movement
a former rebel group headed by Darfur governor Minni Minawi
mobilized civilians and the military had repulsed RSF efforts to completely choke the city of supplies
“The RSF even shut down the main water dam in Golo area
which is the only source of the water to al-Fasher city
but our forces repulsed them and restored the water facility,” he told MEE
skirmishes and attacks on communities surrounding al-Fasher and the city itself continue
According to the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DMT)
there have recently been clashes in al-Fasher’s western neighbourhoods
“There were also reports of deaths and injuries among civilians
The situation remains tense and unpredictable” the DMT said in a new report

Further expanding health screening services to contribute to the early detection of cancer and lifestyle diseases
2025 – FUJIFILM Corporation announces the launch of the “NURA Express” mobile health screening center using bus in Kozhikode
This marks an expansion of Fujifilm’s health screening service business in emerging countries
Health screening can not only be expected to detect these diseases at an early stage and take measures such as treatment and health guidance to reduce mortality and the risk of serious illness
but it can also lead to illness prevention by providing a better understanding of the state of the body
there are few facilities that provide health screening services
and the culture of undergoing health screening has not yet taken root
Fujifilm will continue to expand the number of health screening centers which uses Fujifilm’s medical devices and medical IT system based on AI technology that are designed to support doctors
and provide high-quality services to an increasing number of people
as well as those incorporating the expertise of “NURA,” have expanded beyond India to Mongolia
Fujifilm's health screening center is equipped with its medical devices including CT scan and mammography system
which utilize Fujifilm’s medical devices and AI technology to support physicians' diagnoses
Fujifilm has launched the new mobile health screening center “NURA Express,” expanding its business
Fujifilm will continue to create an environment where more people can access health screening services
Regulatory Toxicology has reached a tipping point – animal tests are increasingly outmoded by New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) that offer the potential to improve human health and environmental protection. So why is the transition out of animal testing and into a NAMs-based approach to Chemical Safety Assessment predicted to take so long by so many commentators
And what can we collectively do to accelerate this transition
This seminar series explores these questions by inviting experts to share candid perspectives on how they’ve overcome barriers to applying NAMs in their fields
Moderators then facilitate discussion about how we can learn from these examples to increase NAM use together
Each presentation is approximately 30 minutes followed by an audience-led Q&A

It’s ok if your jaw drops a little the first time you walk into Nura
striking home of Scott Hawley and Michelle Lobo-Hawley’s newish restaurant
located in a former auto body shop on the corner of Norman and Guernsey in Greenpoint
is easily one of the most immediately impressive spaces I’ve been to in recent memory
There’s a row of curvy wooden booths running up one wall to the big open kitchen in the back
The three-sided island bar is surrounded by comfy cushioned stools
with a gnarly-looking succulent and a bellowing elephant rising above the bottles of booze
Another elephant resides in the spacious waiting-for-a-table lounge
as do so many plants that it made me grateful I wasn’t in charge of keeping them all alive
Another large dining area with banquettes and scattered tables brings the seating capacity up to about 80 people total
And if you’re concerned that the high-ceilinged
stone-floored room would quickly get obnoxiously shouty
know that they’ve installed sound-deadening material in the beams above
so the noise level is totally comfortable for normal
adult conversation even when every seat is filled
While Nura has nailed that instant vibe of “wow we made the right choice by coming here tonight”—the couple’s other restaurant
also feels effortlessly cool—what really makes this place special is the food
who spent six years at Roberta’s before signing on and creating the menu here last summer
and Carnesi tells Brooklyn Magazine that “the first thing they told me about this space was that they have a tandoori oven
so I knew I was going to have to incorporate that into what we were doing.”
Nura’s cuisine is fusion: “Indian
“Those are three of the really big cuisines that we focus on
but Scott was kind of like ‘I want you to do something without rules
Using what she calls a “global pantry of ingredients,” Carnesi has done exactly that
that slathers the mashed tuber in a nutty tahini
the whole thing brightened and sweetened with Meyer lemon honey
a topping of fried garlic giving it some bite
I’ve never eaten anything quite like it
which keep company with meltingly-soft chunks of tart apple on a cloud of whipped paneer
sauces and sprinklings of yuzu and vadouvan bringing both color and depth to the party
The radicchio salad with blood orange and cashews is a bit more straightforward
but the cabbage with harissa and crispy olives
the prawns with pomegranate and Turkish urfa biber
and za’atar baby back ribs with cherry chipotle BBQ sauce
it’s a bit surprising that what’s emerged as Carnesi’s signature dish here is described rather blandly as a “half-chicken” on the menu
this beauty is juicy and tender throughout
and sitting in a puddle of a “butter chicken hollandaise” that will buckle your knees
The other must-get dish at Nura comes courtesy of pastry chef Sam Short
who’s also from Roberta’s and makes some of the best bread you’ll ever eat
Her contribution to the “breads and dips” platter
wonderfully greasy wheels of garlic coriander naan and a pair of maple cornbread mini-loaves
including the excellent coffee pepita pavlova
starring her Meyer lemon curd ice cream and crackling shell
Next time I’m getting the chocolate ice cream sundae with black cardamom
and Short’s version of Italian torrone
coffee pepita pavlova; $12 each (Scott Lynch)
Nura is located at 46 Norman Avenue
and is currently open for dinner on Wednesday through Saturday from 5:30 p.m
and for brunch on the weekends from 11:00 to 3:00
a few tables and all of the bar are kept open for walk-ins (347-672-1222)
and preschool receptionist in New York City
a collaboration between Fujifilm Healthcare and Dr
recently celebrated the 4th anniversary of its Bengaluru facility. NURA aims to increase its capacity by 50%
enabling it to serve even more people every day
To further encourage the adoption of health screenings
NURA continues to run educational campaigns
spreading awareness about the critical role of early diagnosis in saving lives
the centre has screened over 20,000 individuals
identifying critical health risks and saving more than 1,500 lives through the early detection of cancer and other lifestyle-driven diseases
NURA’s Bengaluru centre utilises REILI AI technology and Pixel Shine imaging with ultra-low-dose radiation to screen multiple organs
ensuring a comprehensive health assessment
the centre has now expanded its screening capabilities to include 10 cancer parameters
with plans for further advancements in the near future

“What I really want is something beautifully shellacked,” says the chef Jackie Carnesi. We are standing in the still-under-construction kitchen at Nura
a new Greenpoint restaurant where Carnesi will
Carnesi is four days deep into menu development
a parade of hits: a plate of fuchsia- and turmeric-tinted deviled eggs sprinkled with guaje seeds
Radicchio salad with prickly-pear vinaigrette and cashew cream
A glaze could give her what she wants; she’s thinking guava and ssamjang
“I feel like that’s something a true artist makes,” she laughs
the veritable rain forest of potted plants that have just arrived from Queens
which carry with them the added burden of having to be both delicious and somehow distinct
Whatever makes the cut for the opening won’t only define Nura as a restaurant; the dishes will
who almost certainly don’t realize how much of her food they’ve already had
asked if she was worried about critics’ reviews
Carnesi distinctly understands the pressure that comes from having your name attached to a menu in New York because she’s been responsible for executing so many others
After growing up in Texas and graduating from culinary school in Napa
run by the chef Alex Stupak; within a year
because this person said you’re a chef?’” Carnesi recalls
Yes!’” Then she moved to other restaurants — Little Prince
Back Forty West — and at some point realized that after a year of Adderall-fueled
A change came after she landed at Roberta’s in 2014 when it was the paragon of haute Brooklyn pizza
No way are they ever hiring me,” Carnesi remembers
“I think that actually ended up being a good thing
having a little humility about my ability,” she explains
She stayed at Roberta’s — where she became acting chef de cuisine and would eventually help it expand with the stand-alone burger joint Burgie’s — for the next six years
Carnesi knew it was time for another change
“They were really kind to me about being like
“I just felt like it was time.” She’d been offered an executive-chef job at a new restaurant in the West Village
she found the opening at Nura the old-fashioned way: through a help-wanted ad on Craigslist
Carnesi is trying to perfect her chicken’s crisp exterior
Breads are baked in the restaurant’s tandoor oven
Carnesi’s striking take on a radicchio salad
Nura is the second project from Scott Hawley and Michelle Lobo-Hawley, the husband-and-wife team behind Otis
which is known both for its food (vaguely Mediterranean) and its vibe (very cool)
Nura does not disappoint in terms of atmosphere: breezily industrial and skylit
and de rigueur collection of potted plants
Carnesi is still thinking about the chickens
“We’re gonna work on that today.” When I’d seen her last
she’d been playing with a version of yogurt rice
“I knew it wasn’t right.” But on the bright side
“it was a reminder that not everything I make is good — that’s what R&D is for.” (The deviled eggs
and the radicchio all remain definitively on the menu.) After this
she’ll head off in search of chicken hearts at Food Bazaar
Carnesi is thinking about the kind of kitchen she’ll run
is not actually contingent upon misery and uppers
“The thing that I’m trying to do here is create this kitchen that I really
It should be really fun,” Carnesi continues
“It’s really important to me that everybody is having such a good time that they have enough energy and mental capacity to do their jobs really well.” It is not just humane
but also practical: Only when people are not stressed out and resentful can they make — and she is aware that this sounds hopelessly saccharine — “food that’s legitimately made with love.”
Carnesi must also consider her kitchen in a much more literal sense: During construction
a pair of workers ask her where they should drill the holes in Nura’s cement walls to mount some latex-glove dispensers
Carnesi has to think about it for a moment
“They’re asking me where these things should go,” she marvels
That’s so definite.” It requires unexpected decisions
You can change your chicken prep after the fact
but the holes in the wall are pretty final
My favorite thing, maybe, out of my many favorite things about Pan Pan Vino Vino, the new bakery-by-day, wine-bar-by-night operation from the Nura team
are the 1950s black-and-white party photos behind the bar of pastry chef Samantha Short’s family
“My grandparents came here after the war,” Short tells Brooklyn Magazine
“And in the Polish community in New Jersey everyone would get dressed up and get together at these great parties
the dining room tables filled with meats and pickles and breads
everyone smoking cigarettes and drinking a lot of liquor.”
Sam Short’s family and friends partying in 1950s New Jersey (Photo by Scott Lynch)
It’s that sort of community vibe Short says she wants to bring to this new spot after dark: “Hang out
this was very much the scene during the Vino Vino part of the proceedings
as a rowdy crowd of Greenpoint locals (of which Short is one) and Nura fans from all over turned the place into a free-flowing party
The wine list here is curated by Nura’s ace sommelier Mackenzie Gassett
and it’s more fun to read than most novels
Here’s Gasset on a $60 bottle of Markus Altenburger
a chardonnay from Austria: “Before your eyes skip right over the CH word
although I could find one for you if you like
The cool limestone soils of Burgenland lend a zippy freshness
tangerine and Meyer lemon are countered with a salty freshness
There are dozens of different bottles available, and glasses run from $14 to $19. Don’t come to Vino Vino without expecting to eat though. In the kitchen at night during the opening weeks here is the incomparable Jackie Carnesi, the former Nura chef who’s also working to re-open Kellogg’s Diner this summer
I made a thoroughly satisfying dinner out of four cicchetti (basically: stuff on top of slabs of chef Short’s lovely baguettes) and a small skillet of stellar oyster mushrooms in cashew cream and chimichurri
Oyster mushroom with cashew cream and chimichurri
All four of the cicchetti I had were worthy of a swoon or two
but especially wonderful were the ‘nduja and pickled celery
including ‘nduja with pickled celery
and the Pan Pan part of the operation is just as exceptional
Short puts out loaves of caraway rye in the morning
and a selection of croissants both savory and sweet
“I like pulling flavors from different cultures
and making things that are different,” she says
“I don’t want us to be pigeonholed as Spanish
We just want to make things that we want to eat.”
On opening weekend that included a brioche feuilletée (a layered
laminated brioche) slathered in house-made cream cheese and studded with chunks of candied guava
Definitely one of the most luscious and decadent things I’ve ever eaten at 9 a.m

Also amazing was Short’s sesame chocolate chip cookie
which she blasts at different temperatures from above and below in her oven
Demand for pastries was so unexpectedly high the first two days
that the Pan Pan team decided to close down the bakery part of the operation for at least a week in order to retool
This sesame chocolate chip cookie is phenomenal
Other things I love about this place: the cozy patio outside
the lovely team of counter workers and wine pourers and food runners
and the fact that there are way more volcano paintings in here than you would ever expect to find in a Greenpoint bakery
and though he tries to play it off like volcanoes symbolize baking fires and ashy soil for growing grapes
and just thinks they are super cool (which they are)
Pan Pan Vino Vino translates as Bread Bread Wine Wine
meaning something like “it is what it is.” Say it with a shrug for maximum effect
Pan Pan Vino Vino is located at 120 Norman Avenue
Vino Vino is currently open on Wednesday through Sunday from 4 to 10 p.m.
with Pan Pan making its reappearance sometime soon

For this place ‘Waterloo Station’ to have a resonance with the local and wider community
the Gadigal people and local Aboriginal people of this place need a voice within the work
