practical training for veterinary specialists on antimicrobial resistance and biosecurity measures when working on potentially contaminated farms will be held in Kyzylzhar
Akkaiyn and Taiynsha districts of North Kazakhstan region
The training is being conducted by national consultants of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in Kazakhstan
The training aims to draw attention to the global problem of antimicrobial resistance in veterinary practices
The issue is exacerbated by the uncontrolled use of antibiotics in animal treatment
Such practices favour the development of antimicrobial resistance and pose a threat to both animal and human health
‘This workshop is part of a series of events FAO experts are organising across the country to raise awareness of the problem of antimicrobial resistance
About 60 per cent of infectious diseases in humans are of zoonotic origin
and improper use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine accelerates the spread of resistance
This threatens not only animal health but also food security
We are organising these workshops to give veterinary professionals the tools and knowledge they need to use antimicrobials rationally and to promote alternative methods of animal health maintenance,’ says Leyla Ansabaeva
FAO experts will also train participants on on-farm biosecurity measures
which are critical to preventing the spread of diseases among animals and ensuring their health and productivity
farmers can reduce the economic losses associated with the treatment and mortality of animals and protect people from zoonotic infections
Experts will talk about the use of personal protective equipment
disinfection of tools and laboratory materials
the importance of vaccination and regular monitoring of animal health
participants will learn about the possibilities of introducing digital technologies
The training will also cover the use of digital technologies
The training sessions are organised within the framework of the project ‘Enhancing the One Health approach in Kazakhstan and its capacity to tackle AMR and zoonotic diseases’
which is implemented jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan
The project aims to support the strengthening of veterinary services
improving prevention and response to threats to animal and public health
Training is also provided under the initiative ‘Pandemic Preparedness and Response through One Health Approaches in Central Asia” including Kazakhstan
environmental and health systems to improve pandemic preparedness and effective response to pandemics
FAO is actively collaborating with Central Asian countries to improve animal health
increase the sustainability of livestock production and strengthen veterinary services
Zoonoses continue to pose a threat to the region
highly pathogenic avian influenza and rabies is an important part of the projects
The use of antimicrobials in agriculture and public health requires an integrated approach based on international best practices to prevent threats and pandemics
