Charyn Canyon
Sergei Terekti presents [ru] a photo essay about his recent trip to Charyn Canyon, Kazakhstan's own smaller version of the Grand Canyon in the United States:
The main canyon is about 150 kilometers long; the Charyn River crosses it. Multiple gorges
and smaller canyons surround the Charyn Canyon
One of the main [attractions] here is the Valley of Castles where rock formations have been crafted by water
and soil erosion over millions of years. When you get to the Valley of Castles
you feel like you are at an architecture [exhibition] featuring masterpieces of biotech and neo-organic architecture of the past and present. Styles vary from Muslim shrines and minarets to Christian Orthodox cathedrals…

A practical training for veterinary specialists on recognition of livestock diseases and antimicrobial resistance took place on 26 August in Terekti district
national consultants of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the Republic of Kazakhstan held a series of educational events for public and private veterinary specialists in Terektin district of West Kazakhstan region
The events took place within the framework of the project ‘OSRO/KAZ/008/USA - Enhancing the One Health approach in Kazakhstan and its capacity to tackle AMR and zoonotic diseases’and focused on three key topics:
Antibiotic use in livestock production and its impact on the animal body and the environment;
Specific biosecurity precautions when visiting potentially contaminated farms
The main objective of the training on antibiotic use in livestock production is to draw attention to the global problem of antimicrobial resistance of microorganisms
especially in the field of veterinary medicine
It is worth noting that the use of antibiotics in veterinary significantly exceeds their use in medicine
Uncontrolled use of antibiotics as growth stimulants in animals
Widespread use of antibiotics in feed additives
This practice not only promotes the development of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms
but also poses a serious threat to the health of both animals and humans
it is crucial informing veterinary professionals about rational use of antibiotics and alternative methods of maintaining animal health
FAO Liaison and Partnership Office in the Republic of Kazakhstan notes: ‘Particularly dangerous infections (PHI) among animals pose a serious threat not only animals
diseases at early stage is important for veterinarians
We train specialists to be alert to any unusual symptoms
These may include unexplained cases of livestock deaths
reduced productivity or diarrhoea with blood
Diagnosis of diseases in animals depends on the symptoms observed
The same symptoms may have different causes depending on the time of year (summer or winter infections)
age group (calves or adult cattle) or sex of the animal
It is also important to consider site-specific characteristics
including the prevalence of certain diseases in the region’
‘The experts shared interesting information about rational use of antibiotics in livestock farming and their impact on the animal body and the environment
also the experts explained how to disinfect most effectively
All this will be useful for us in practice
and we will continue to hold local trainings in the regions so that specialists can be weel-informed about rational use of antibiotics in livestock farming’
Training sessions were organised by FAO Liaison and Partnership Office in Kazakhstan within the framework of the project ‘OSRO/KAZ/008/USA - Enhancing the One Health approach in Kazakhstan and its capacity to tackle AMR and zoonotic diseases’
which is implemented jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan
The project was initiated to support Kazakhstan in strengthening its veterinary services
early detection and response to threats to animal and public health
