After moving their eponymous imprint from HarperCollins Children's Books to Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group last spring
publishers Alessandra Balzer and Donna Bray of Balzer + Bray have announced their inaugural list
With books such as Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give (edited by Bray)
and The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes (edited by Balzer) in their portfolio
the publishers have established a reputation for books at the intersection of literary and commercial fiction
with 10 titles within a mix of categories: three picture books
The Balzer + Bray imprint launched at Harper in 2009
Both publishers had held leadership roles at Hyperion Books for Children
with Bray serving as editorial director and Balzer as executive editor
the co-publishers released an array of bestsellers and award winners
Bray said the move to Macmillan was “the right opportunity at the right time.” Their time at Harper was “really wonderful and we built a great list there,” she said
“but we were just ready for a change
It was a new challenge—to do what we love to do in a new environment with new people.” VP and co-publisher Alessandra Balzer called the change “energizing.”
and philosophy remain the same,” Balzer added
“We’re going to continue to publish bold innovative books that appeal directly to kids
We’re never led by trends or by necessarily what’s hot in the market
Things are constantly evolving and changing.”
“We’re always looking for authors who have something to say to kids at this time—high quality
but that also feel current.” The inaugural list features authors who “write like nobody else does,” she continued
“They really respect kids and write so beautifully in their different ways.”
Among those featured on the initial list are Sara Pennypacker (the Clementine series)
and Jasmine Warga (Other Words for Home) and Ibi Zoboi (Nigeria Jones)
who have published with both editors across their careers
“It feels like kismet that we have such a nice mix of former authors that we love and new people,” Balzer said
While all the authors on the inaugural list have been previously published
“some are new to us and some are doing work that’s different from what they’ve done in the past,” she added
The imprint’s picture book list includes Call Me Moby
the first author-illustrated title by New Yorker cartoonist and television writer Lars Kenseth
“It’s a story that has a lot of heart,” Bray said
Adults familiar with Moby-Dick will understand the references
it’s “a story of a whale who just wants to make friends and doesn’t understand why the sailors don’t want to be friends with him.”
Coretta Scott King winner and Caldecott Honoree Christian Robinson’s picture book Dad is destined to “make people cry,” Bray said
The story focuses on different kinds of fathers
and different sorts of father-child relationships
“All the very best books can be read on so many levels
A parent reading it to a child will understand the layers of the text
but [Dad] also can just be taken at face value,” Bray added
the first novel for this age group by Freddie Kölsch
Spindlewood is described by Bray as having “Wednesday Addams vibes,” centering on a girl who “winds up at a boarding school for seers even though she cannot see ghosts and is very skeptical.”
Also on the middle grade list is The Serpent
Being “very cognizant of how Haiti is represented in the news,” Balzer said
Zoboi “takes that and creates this incredible middle-grade fantasy about kids who are the descendants of Voudou gods
It’s her way of speaking to that moment and sort of taking back that narrative
She can do it like no one else can.” Balzer added that the story is “incredibly escapist” with “all the things that kids love about fantasy
Bray said she’s always looking for stories that are “funny
so we have a real emotional connection to the story.” She found it all in Augusta Pine Does Not Exist by Emily Lloyd Jones (The Bone Houses)
the book features a young hacker who uses her criminal skills and knowledge to solve crimes with a secret government agency
Peter Bognanni (This Book Is Not Yet Rated) has written for both adults and teens
is about a boy grappling with grief and anxiety who enrolls in an adventure therapy program
Balzer said that the novel’s themes resonate especially strongly for teens these days and that
while there are elements of escapism in the story
which makes it especially gripping from the beginning
Starting with a small list has allowed the editors to be involved in each part of the process
“We very much love being in the weeds with the author and the artist and the team
It’s such a collaborative process for us
We care so passionately about it and of course we take very seriously that we’re shepherding these authors’ book babies into the world,” Balzer said
Currently the plan is to slowly build to around 24 books a year
While they don’t have any debut authors on the initial list
introducing new voices is something that’s important to the publishers and they anticipate doing so as time goes on
“We’re known for having a really strong vision for a book from acquisition,” Bray said
adding that the team “really needs to feel that we can be the best publisher for any given book that we bring on.”
While the exact dates aren’t finalized yet
the first Balzer + Bray titles under Macmillan will publish in January 2026

is enjoying an epochal increase in followers on Instagram
The best thing about it: the club from the 2nd interregional league didn't have to do anything at all to achieve this
FC Balzers from the Principality of Liechtenstein plays in the 2nd interregional league
the club from the tranquil village of 4,500 souls is in 6th place
They are 11 points behind league leaders FC Widnau
followed by midfielder Marino Cavegn with four goals
Six other players have scored at least once
In other words, a club like there are thousands of them on this planet. But a few days ago, everything changed at FC Balzers. The club has become an "internet sensation", headlined the newspaper "Liechtensteiner Vaterland" on December 31. And indeed, a quick search is enough to prove it.
On December 24, FC Balzers posted a simple picture on Instagram wishing viewers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. By January 1, the post had already been liked over 96,000 times.

Absolute madness. For comparison: league leaders FC Widnau posted a similar post on December 23. At the same time, it was given 67 hearts.
How is this possible? An Argentinian influencer named Valen Scarsini has called on his huge TikTok and Instagram following to make the "football club with the smallest fan base" big. A video of this went viral on TikTok and was viewed around 4 million times within a day.
And there are now a whole series of videos on Instagram in which Scarsini beats the advertising drum for FC Balzers. And his calls are bearing fruit: the number of FC Balzers followers grew from around 1000 to 275,000 virtually overnight (as of January 1, 5.30 pm).
And even if the curve of new followers is flattening out, there are still more every hour. The new "fans" also spread countless posts under the hashtag #Todossomosdelbalzers ("We are all from Balzers").
In the case of FC Balzers, it all seems pretty funny. But it also shows the power a single post can have on social media. If used incorrectly, it is anything but funny and, in the worst case, can even be extremely dangerous.

FC Balzers seem to be enjoying their unexpected new-found fame - and that's absolutely fine
they already have more followers than BSC YB (182,000)
who are currently playing in the Champions League
FC Balzers has also already passed FC Basel (260,000 followers)
Now all it would take is for a sheikh to free up a few hundred million for FC Balzers to rise to number 1 in sporting terms in a few years' time
The most 'crazy' audience in the Balkans: Dinamo beat Hajduk again, pressure proves too much for Split
Dragan Skočić and Croatian trio deliver historic title for Tractor
The power of social media in the football world continues to grow
as shown by Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini
With 275,000 followers on Instagram and significant popularity on TikTok
Scarsini built his audience through energetic commentary on high-profile football topics
often discussing stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Cole Palmer
Scarsini launched a unique initiative: he decided to find “the club with the fewest fans in the world” and boost its recognition
His search led him to Liechtenstein’s oldest club
founded in 1932 and based in a town of fewer than 5,000 residents
like its more prominent compatriot FC Vaduz
competes in Switzerland’s regional fifth division
Scarsini urged his followers to support FC Balzers using the hashtag #TodosSomosDeBalzers (We’re all from Balzers)
Balzers’ Instagram following skyrocketed from 1,000 to an astonishing 422,000
while its unofficial TikTok account gained 315,000 followers
The unexpected popularity triggered a frenzy
“Things exploded,” said club president Fredy Scherrer
“We’ve been inundated with requests for jerseys
and promotional items.” German sportswear brand Jako
Team captain and marketing director Sandro Wolfinger added
“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing
We’re receiving offers for friendly matches via email and Instagram
and players from around the world are expressing interest in joining Balzers.”
Balzers’ social media following now surpasses Swiss giants FC Basel (263,000) and BSC Young Boys (182,000)
Balzers has overtaken seven Bundesliga clubs
the club invited Scarsini to Liechtenstein at its expense
Scarsini documented his journey through Brazil and London before arriving in Balzers
Although the Swiss league was on winter break
he joined the players to watch a Swiss hockey match in Davos
Whether this phenomenon brings lasting benefits to FC Balzers remains to be seen
Professor Lorenzo Cantoni of the Università della Svizzera italiana
“The Instagram success is an unexpected gift for Balzers
The club now has opportunities to monetize
such as attracting better players or securing sponsorships tied to their newfound fame.”
Professor Cantoni believes Scarsini will benefit more in the long run: “Ironically
Scarsini now has fewer followers than the club he promoted
he can showcase this success to potential clients as proof of his ability to drive popularity.”
He concluded with a caution: “The biggest danger lies in the illusion that such random popularity will lead to sustained success
It’s crucial to recognize that social media fame can never be taken for granted.”

$160 million all-cash acquisition set to create ‘world-leading’ provider of thin-film optical coatings
Balzers headquartersMaterion is set to expand and diversify its optical coatings business dramatically, with a $160 million agreement to acquire historic thin-films pioneer Optics Balzers
which is subject to regulatory approvals but expected to be completed by September
is seen by Materion as highly complementary - from the point of view of geography
“Optics Balzers is a pioneer in thin-film optical coatings with a strong brand name and reputation for quality,” announced Materion
“The team has demonstrated an unmatched ability to develop proprietary technology and create value for global customers in attractive high-growth markets.”
Balzers CEO Detlev Häusler added: “Our combined global reach
and in-house talent should create tremendous value for our customers and expand opportunities for our employees
"We are assuming that all employees in all sites will be taken over
because the focus of the company’s acquisition is on growth rather than on cost reduction
"The new owners are aware of the strong Optics Balzers brand value," the Balzers CEO added
Optics Balzers will be able to implement the global expansion strategy more quickly
Liechtenstein-based Balzers has long been recognized for its coatings expertise
with particular strengths in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions
Applications in life sciences applications accounted for one third of the firm’s $67 million sales in the latest full year of trading
Materion has also provided beryllium for the primary mirror surface of the James Webb Space Telescope
while its products feature in night-vision and camera optics for cars
and infrared sensors in fighter jets and unmanned aerial vehicles
“This is an excellent fit from a technology standpoint,” stated Vijayvargiya
adding that the deal would enable the US firm to penetrate the life sciences sector in a way that it had not been able to manage previously
The CEO highlighted some key growth applications enabled by Balzers' technologies
wafer-level optics for facial recognition technologies
and emerging requirements for anti-reflective coatings in automotive lidar systems for self-driving vehicles
The complementary nature of the deal is evident in the geographical sales of the two firms
Only 7 per cent of Optics Balzers’ sales in the year to March were to US customers
with a fairly even split between Europe and Asia otherwise
Sales from Materion’s own coatings division are dominated by North America
with the region accounting for more than three-quarters of revenues in fiscal year 2019
Assuming that planned the deal gets the green light from regulators
Materion will benefit from Balzers’ state-of-the-art research and manufacturing facilities in Liechtenstein and Germany in Europe
as well as its new production site in Penang
The US firm said that the entire Balzers management team
and facilities will be merged within its “precision coatings” business segment
That precision coatings unit posted sales of $18.7 million in Materion’s most recent financial quarter
a sharp year-on-year decline after the company decided to exit the large-area coatings sector

FC Balzers from the 2nd interregional league has had more Instagram followers than FC Basel and FC Zurich combined for a few days now - thanks to Argentinian influencer El Scarso. The Liechtenstein club and El Scarso explain the social media hype at a media conference.
A small club from the Principality of Liechtenstein has become an internet sensation. Within just a few days, the number of FC Balzers' Instagram followers has risen from around 1,000 to more than 420,000. By comparison, FC Basel, the Swiss club with the largest following, has 263,000 followers on Instagram.
How is this possible? On 28 December, Argentinian influencer Valentin Scarsini, better known as "El Scarso", called on his huge TikTok and Instagram following to make the "football club with the smallest fan base" big.
A video of this went viral on TikTok and was viewed around 4 million times within a day. The clip has since been played 8.4 million times. "El Scarso" has now traveled to Liechtenstein to visit FC Balzers. On Friday evening, a press conference was even held in the tranquil village of 4500 souls.
"After two or three days, we realized that it was more than just a New Year's Eve stunt. A week after the video, we took the initiative and Valentin Scarsini arrived last Monday. He is staying until Saturday evening. We have put together a varied program for him over the last few days," explains Sandro Wolfinger, Head of Marketing and player at FC Balzers. "It was Valentin's first flight and his first trip of his life. That alone made it an exciting trip for him."
But how did Scarsini come across the tranquil club in Liechtenstein? "When I set myself the task of growing a small club, I wanted to find the club with the smallest fan base that had great potential for growth. I then looked into FC Balzers, their football pitch and many other things about the club. The rest is history."
Scarsini is overwhelmed by the numerous reactions: "I had no idea it would get so out of hand. I thought we could get support. But I never expected it to explode like this."

he met his best friend and the love of his life
Steve was the youngest of eight children with all the rights

His wit and humor allowed him to connect with an audience
letting him creatively and effectively present his material while keeping them engaged (and laughing!)
Steve’s love for the outdoors began early in his life
spending countless hours on the family farm
explore the woods and swim the creek in all weather and in every season
While he loved his job of forecasting and analyzing market trends and opportunities
he saved his best forecasting and analytical skills for determining where the fish were biting and the deer were treading
And unless it’s with Kerry and the children
it’s almost impossible to find a picture of Steve that doesn’t include camouflage
and could have fun in the simplest of moments together
And whether it was coming home after work to help with dinner
or spending a family day at Wisconsin Dells
Steve delighted in the life he shared with those he loved the most
Steve also enjoyed time spent with his extended families on vacations in Mexico
boating on Lake Decatur and Lake Shelbyville
fishing at Lake Carroll or hunting and fishing on the family farm
No one can forget the fruits of those fishing excursions
which usually supplied an annual family fish fry
Steve and his brothers enjoyed sharing the haul with any and all
It was a bit like the miracle of the loaves and fishes -- there always seemed to be enough for everyone to have their fill with a little left over for later
Steve and his brothers engaged in fierce cooking competitions utilizing the grill or their barbeque smokers to see who the best chef was and who had the most creative rubs and recipes
Family members were often summoned to the judge the winner
Steve was a member of Holy Apostles Catholic Church
He was born and raised Catholic and embraced the faith of his childhood in his adult life
He spent many hours praying with his children

Allison’s past OPB lives included stints as announcer

passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 86 on July 07
surrounded by her devoted husband and children
Joyce had her first child when she was 33 and quickly she and Bob had a full quiver with their 8 blessings in 11 years
They were further blessed with 55 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren… So far
It's guaranteed that Joyce’s face would light up anytime a baby was placed in her arms
and it was absolutely her greatest joy in life
She was "a natural" when it came to caring for babies
Joyce obtained a Bachelors in Education and Masters in Guidance Counseling at Marquette University and a second Masters in Social Work from the University of Illinois
Joyce went on to practice social work and guidance counseling for countless students in the Rockford Public Schools
Joyce truly had a passion for helping students in need until she finally retired at the age of 72
It was of utmost importance that her children received a quality education
Bob and Joyce made the necessary sacrifices to give their eight children a Catholic education at Holy Family Catholic Grade School and Boylan Catholic High School
All of their children went on to higher education
Joyce’s Catholic faith was central to her life and she demonstrated exemplary modeling with her witness
the family gathered in the comfort of their living room
such as hearty pot roasts on Sunday afternoons
and popular musicals played on the record player
Fun with the family was a priority for Joyce
Her children fondly reminisce memories of family activities centered around swimming
in which Joyce typically played as the pitcher
Bob and Joyce were known for orchestrating summer
family camping trips in their “retro” green
and down south to Florida were some of their favorite destinations
Joyce enjoyed visiting loved ones such as her siblings' families
After experiencing the tragedy of a tornado as a child
demolishing her family home and losing everything
Joyce saw to it that her own children's needs were well provided for
She saw to it that they were dressed in new clothes
and sometimes she even sewed matching outfits for her girls when they were younger
It was apparent that Joyce wanted quality for her family
Joyce relied entirely on her loving and devoted husband
His saintly love and devotion to her was an incredible witness to the family and all the grandchildren
Joyce was predeceased by her parents Everett and Mary Rita Bickett
sisters Sister Mary Joseph and Barbara Cauwels
son Steven Balzer and granddaughter Sarah Kate Armato
55 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; siblings John Bickett and Rita Becker
The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory

World Athletics is deeply saddened to hear that Germany’s 1964 Olympic 80m hurdles champion Karin Balzer died on Tuesday (17) at the age of 81 after a short illness
Balzer made her Olympic debut in 1960 at the age of 22 and missed out on making the Olympic final by one place
with whom she had briefly fled East Germany two years prior
only to return after being threatened by the Stasi
Balzer won her first major medal when taking silver at the 1962 European Championships in Belgrade
Balzer’s first world record in the sprint hurdles came when she was contesting a pentathlon
She clocked 10.5 in the 80m hurdles to equal the mark that was already shared between Gisela Birkemeyer and Betty Moore
That performance made her one of the favourites to win the Olympic title in Tokyo that year
It what ended as one of the closest finishes in Olympic history
Balzer won by 0.01 from Poland’s Teresa Cieply with Australia’s Pam Kilborn a further 0.01 behind in third
Balzer had equalled the Olympic record of 10.6 in the semi-finals
Her time of 10.5 in the final would have equalled her own world record
but the wind was marginally over the limit at 2.3m/s
She gave birth to her son Andreas in 1965 and returned to the track one year later
Balzer was East Germany’s flag bearer at the 1968 Olympics but she was unable to retain her title in Mexico City
It was the last time the women’s 80m hurdles was contested at a major event as the discipline was extended to 100m from 1969 onwards
Balzer set the first official world record for the 100m hurdles
She improved the mark on two further occasions that year and became the first woman to better 13 seconds
She also won her second and third European titles in 1969 and 1971
By the end of 1971 she had reduced the world record to 12.6
the seventh official world record of her career
and was named East German Sportswoman of the Year
Balzer’s son Andreas was involved in an accident and put in a coma
He died the day before the 100m hurdles final
but her husband didn’t tell Balzer until after the race
Balzer retired in 1973 and gave birth to her second son
who went on to win European silver in 1998 and world indoor bronze in 1999
Balzer and her husband coached Anja Rucker
Balzer worked as a school teacher after her retirement from athletics and later worked as a lecturer in Cologne
