carried out by Teltonika's specialists has shown that it is not worthwhile to do so in Lithuania especially due to the extremely high pollution levels caused by the currently prevailing production processes on the market," the company told LRT.lt he valued the potential project at around 460 million euros "Then we would have the whole chain of chip production from the sand to the final product [inside the country]," he told BNS Teltonika currently has factories in Vilnius and Molėtai and plans to invest 3.7 billion euros in its technology centre in the Lithuanian capital over the next ten years The facility is expected to include a semiconductor chip manufacturing complex Teltonika was founded in 1998 and has 2,600 employees and 30 offices worldwide the solar plant will generate enough clean energy for 24,000 households European Energy, a Danish renewable energy company, is planning to build a 65MW solar project in the municipality of Anyksciai Considered to be one of the largest solar farms till date in the Baltics the new plant is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of this year the plant will span more than 120ha and generate about 90,000MWh annually This is expected to meet the power needs of nearly 24,000 homes The solar panels will be mounted on tracker systems which will adjust the panels according to the sunlight thereby helping generate optimal power generation throughout the day European Energy Lithuania country manager Tadeusas Konkovskis said: “It is a milestone for European Energy to have reached so far in pushing the renewable energy development in Lithuania the company has other solar projects in Jonava and Skuodas in the country which are scheduled to be connected to the grid by 2026 Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis European Energy CEO Knud Erik Andersen said: “Our goal in Lithuania is to support the transition into a green economy to contribute to the energy independence of all Baltics countries as well as the implementation of global goals related to climate change we are constantly investing to further strengthen the renewable energy sector of Lithuania.” the company has spent over €460m to develop clean energy projects in the country It aims to invest a total of over €1.6bn across wind and solar farms Earlier this month, the company (More information: http://www.kultura.vu.lt/en/news) the archaeologists have unearthed a 14th-century coin of Jogaila Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland which excavated the path to the Šventoji River also found artefacts from the end of the 14th century indicating that a new settlement was already being established along the Anykšta River at that time and was the origin of the present-day Anykščiai “written records of the former Anykščiai Manor date back to the mid-15th century and more mentions appear in the 16th century” The manor was first mentioned in 1442 during the visit of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and the King of Poland Kazimieras Jogailaitis Previous archaeological investigations could not establish an earlier existence of the manor The early coins of Jogaila are quite rare in Lithuania the new find suggests that the manor was built as an unfortified residence at the end of the 14th century “The finds allow us to advance the history of Anykščiai by about 50 years,” says archaeologist Gintautas Zabiela The archaeological findings also show that the first inhabitants settled in the Anykščiai area around 9000 BC A canopy walkway was on Friday officially opened for the public in Anykščiai meandering in the picturesque forest of Anykščiai Regional Park is the first and so far only such structure in Lithuania and Eastern Europe The Anykščiai canopy walkway meanders some 300 metres and leads to 35-metre tower overlooking the forest which is the subject of a canonical nineteenth-century poem and the loops of the River Šventoji The walkway is open to the public free of charge except when visitors want additional guide services There is also an option to purchase a five-day one-euro ticket in order to support the upkeep of Anykščiai Regional Park a resident of the town of Andrioniškis in north-eastern Anykščiai District has been picking and selling mushrooms for a decade prices are so low that he cannot survive on mushroom picking alone “They buy chanterelles for 1.5 euro a kilo [...] That’s only enough for oil to fry some mushrooms for oneself,” says Vladas According to the Mushroom Pickers’ Association a kilo of boletes – one of the most prized kinds of mushrooms – can fetch as little as 80 cents the purchase price is falling because processors are importing mushrooms from abroad particularly from neighbouring Russia and Belarus where they can get them for two or three times cheaper “Even Lithuanians have registered companies there They have been in business there for many years,” says Vytenis Daugudis founder of the Mushroom Pickers’ Association Belarusian and Russian mushrooms are not destined for the Lithuanian market but for the markets of other European countries They are processed in the country and transported further west with fridges and dryers here,” says Daugudis Some companies in Russia may be moving their operations to Belarus “The ones that were registered in Russia have re-registered in Belarus the restrictions are lower,” says Daugudis “The sanctions against Russia are stricter there are stricter requirements not to be an investor not to be involved in management [of companies,” says Mindaugas Petrauskas head of the financial crime prevention department at Amlyze more than 250 tonnes of chantarelles were imported from Belarus and almost 90 tonnes from Russia this June alone Lithuanian customs authorities note there are no sanctions on mushrooms “Foodstuffs and agricultural products [from Russia and Belarus] are not banned for export or import Except for a very small list of food products,” Customs spokesman Arūnas Adomėnas commented to LRT TV which drew up the list of sanctioned products says that mushroom processors from Varėna District have requested an exemption from the sanctions The Minister of Agriculture quotes their arguments as follows: “Our processing industry is highly developed we have the facilities and we can process more there will be a shortage of raw materials.” According to Agriculture Minister Kazys Starkevičius sanctions could be introduced on mushrooms from Russia and Belarus in the future mushroom processors dispute that there is a glut of Russian and Belarusian mushrooms They say the prices are low because of falling consumption They claim that the purchase price is currently between 2 and 3 euros per kilogramme Companies simply have nowhere to sell their mushrooms,” says Virginijus Varanavičius head of the Association of Mushroom and Berry Entrepreneurs And mushrooms are imported only when needed “Lithuanian companies import some mushrooms when there is a need To make up for shortfalls of mushrooms in Lithuania,” Varanavičius assues it would not be difficult to impose sanctions on mushrooms covered in 12 decorated with a shroud of golden lights Druskininkai unveiled a Christmas tree decorated with a golden crown Alytus has decided to go for a more modest Christmas tree to emphasise “community and not decorations” The Panevėžys Christmas tree features huge decorations The Christmas tree in Palanga is one of the most innovative this year The main Christmas tree is accompanied by a 25-metre-long Christmas train has set aside two plots of land for wooden developments – apartment buildings up to four storeys high The municipality has now invited developers to submit designs The lower floors could be used for shops and offices while the upper floors are intended for living “We will be asking to design modular structures which would allow to build bigger blocks,” says Daiva Gasiūnienė of Anykščiai Municipality “These modules could then also serve as an example for other towns.” Construction companies say that natural materials but has recently opened a production line for construction materials Among the planned products are wooden modular building structures “I don't think construction with natural materials will be cheaper but it will have other advantages,” says Ingrida Beržanskytė “These include the speed of construction and production technologies This means that more of the construction will be carried out in the factory and less on the building site.” The Architect Mantas Navalinskas is designing an office building for a logistics firm near Kaunas – with wood dominating the facade and interiors Timber is both an environmentally-friendly and beautiful material although the biggest challenge in designing wooden buildings is meeting fire safety requirements wood is a far more stable and predictable material than metal,” he says “You can design and calculate the effects of fire and plan compensatory mechanisms to make the building safe.” The Lithuanian government is now drafting regulations that would see all future public buildings be at least 50-percent built of natural materials The Environment Ministry has also drafted proposals to allow constructing higher wooden buildings “How much taller will depend on engineering solutions,” says Dainius Čergelis of the Environment Ministry where there are hardly any limits for how tall wooden buildings can be Lithuania plans to enact the new regulations by 2024 an astrophysicist at the Faculty of Physics of Vilnius University a scientist at the Faculty of Physics of Vilnius University talk about this in LRT RADIO’s programme 10–12 are the most visible part of storms to the human eye “The Northern Lights are the glowing layers of the Earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of 200–300 km by the flow of electric particles from the Sun and sometimes there are more intense bursts The most visual manifestation is the Northern Lights,” explains Dobrovolskas The colour spectrum of the aurora borealis depends on which air particles are glowing and how strongly they are excited Nitrogen gives off a blue hue,” says the astrophysicist the Northern Lights have become more frequent in recent months as the Sun has reached its maximum intensity ejections of electric particles into space which is why we are now seeing auroras much more often,” he says Peak solar activity lasts for a year or a year and a half It is to be expected that it will remain at a fairly high level for at least another year We can only start to expect a fall perhaps towards the end of next year And the trough will come in another seven years,” Dobrovolskas predicts power grids and telecommunications systems telecommunications satellites flying in space,” the scientist says the electromagnetic storms that are currently taking place are not strong enough to affect the population “The Earth hasn’t seen many very strong storms except perhaps the Carrington Storm more than 150 years ago If a storm like Carrington were to happen now we would really feel it – the effects would be quite profound,” says Ikamas The 1859 Carrington solar storm affected telegraph wires since today’s society is heavily dependent on communications and electricity we would feel it quite strongly,” explains Ikamas This would lead to a pause in the operation of electricity-based systems no longer be able to use our computers and telephones there could be disruptions to heating and plumbing systems The areas most affected by an electromagnetic storm are closer to the North and South Poles Lietuvos metrika Lithuanian Metrica is a huge archive of documents of the Chancellery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania There is a total of 700 known Lithuanian Metrica books Lithuania has published more than 60 volumes of this impressive source To make these important collections more accessible to the general public and researchers around the world Vilnius University researchers digitized some of them and uploaded them to a virtual platform 34 books published in Lithuania are available on the newly created electronic reading room It integrates interactive indexes of personal and place names a dictionary of Ruthenian-Lithuanian languages Rimvydas Petrauskas names the Lithuanian Metrica publishing and digitization projects as an excellent example of international science every publication about it is welcome primarily in our neighboring regions but also around the world it is only natural that any attempt to expand the availability of Lithuanian Metrica is very important and this work should continue there is a new generation that reads differently and needs the largest possible online accessibility of resources,” Prof Petrauskas said at the launch of the new platform that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its history is in itself an international object of research which is gaining more and more interest from foreign scientists “The Grand Duchy is being studied by scientists not only from Lithuania we hoped that the digital reading room for Lithuanian Metrica would help reveal the richness of Lithuanian historical sources to the wider audience and at the same time demonstrate the meticulous high-level work of Lithuanian historians,” said Karolis Čižauskas a doctoral student at the VU Faculty of History who worked on the digitization of Lithuanian Metrica the digitization of Lithuanian Metrica books published in the 1990s and early 2000s ‒ scanning with a high-resolution scanner ‒ was probably the easiest part of the project The development of an interactive index and other assistive tools took the longest “The development of the interactive indexes required the manual collection of probably over 100,000 rows of data the re-indexing of 34 book personal and place names (Ruthenian and Latin) and their division into relevant sections on which the programmers have already been working.” to this day stored in Moscow and difficult to access are gradually becoming accessible from any part of the world at any time of the day The origins of Lithuanian Metrica – Vytautas’s office Lithuanian Metrica is undoubtedly one of the most important monuments of the Lithuanian history It contains a wide range of documents from the 14th to the 18th centuries and Polish: privileges for cities and nobles “A block of written sources of this size could only be born with the spread of written culture in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania when the administrative needs of the ruler and the state had already begun to be immortalized in writing Already during the reign of Vytautas the Great (1390–1430) compiled multilingual documents of various contents the office of Vytautas did not leave a single “book” of Lithuanian Metrica,” said Povilas Andrius Stepavičius a doctoral student at the VU Faculty of History who worked on the digitization of the Metrica books under the rule of Casimir Jagiellon (1440–1492) and the permanent office of the Chancellor the documents issued by the ruler were registered and written in the “memory” of the ruler with the growing need for written documents and the volume of compilation began the development of what is now called Lithuanian Metrica continuously compiled up to the 18th century was eventually named the Metrica of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by contemporaries and gradually became the state archive What can you expect to find in Lithuanian Metrica the division of all volumes of Lithuanian Metrica into several categories came into force: diplomatic affairs This also indicates the thematic fields containing material both a professional researcher and a history enthusiast: various diplomatic correspondences with Poland and other states; numerous trials and convictions by the ruler and other judicial cases; a highly valuable 1528 census of the conscript army of the nobility; ruler privileges granted to cities grants to nobles; the orders of the Grand Duke to various officers and many more documents of various types and contents destroyed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth the new rulers also noticed Lithuanian Metrica both as a symbolic trophy and as a set of documents required for pragmatic purposes century Lithuanian Metrica moved from Vilnius to St the Lithuanian Statute and Lithuanian Metrica Research Center of the Faculty of History of Vilnius University and the Lithuanian Institute of History have been the most active in developing research and publishing Lithuanian Metrica It is the books of Lithuanian Metrica published by these two research centers that are available on the newly created platform Daugavpils City Council in cooperation with the Anykščiai district municipality
