In collaboration with the Valencia Institute of Biomechanics
The club's partnership with Kelme has continued to grow following the change of ownership
with both entities collaborating through adversity to introduce new and improved training kit for the first team midway through the season
Both the Iron and Kelme have been working hard behind the scenes perfecting three new kits for the 2024-25 season in celebration of the 125th anniversary
which has also included the new badge being produced
with a lot of effort put in from our Technical Kit Partners
The club has also been working in collaboration with Aaron Cheeseman along with Pete Hewes and Mitchell Blades of Know Film to bring an exciting kit launch video
which will be published towards the end of June
our home shirt for the new campaign will go on a semi-blind pre-order
for supporters to be among the first to get their hands on the product once it arrives next month
ticketing and retail manager James Moody said: "We've been delighted with the partnership that we've formed with Kelme over the first season of the agreement
They've worked really well with the club as we've battled through the debt inherited
with the entire kit order from last season one of the outstanding bills the new owners took on
"We've been working on our 125th anniversary year behind the scenes for months
first putting the badge to a fan vote before working on designs
Taking into consideration the fantastic retail sales from last season
we've massively upped the order on junior sizes
as well as sizes we feel sold out too early
and also reintroduced the infant kits range
"We're hoping the new designs will be a real hit amongst supporters and signify a poignant year and milestone
and cannot wait to see supporters wearing them week-in
added: "Kelme are delighted to be working with SUFC again for the 2024-25 season
With all of the positive changes the club has put in place over the past nine months
we are looking forward to a successful season ahead with the Iron."
Co-owner and Chair Michelle Harness continued: "We've had fantastic support from Kelme since we took over the club
They've been very mindful of our situation
recommending and providing better training kit for the players mid-season to improve what was ordered last pre-season
have both been working really hard to bring us three kits to be proud of for the new season
and I think they link in with our 125th anniversary celebrations very well
"Hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer to see them
Pete and Mitchell are working immensely hard to put together an incredible kit launch
We want these kits to have the launch to match
The Iron's home shirt for the 2024-25 season will go on a "blind" pre-order imminently
We're that confident that you'll love it as much as we do
Top-flight English soccer club Watford have signed a four-year kit supply deal with Chinese-owned sportswear brand Kelme worth around UK£10 million (US$12.35 million)
The Premier League club’s current UK£750,000 (US$932,000) a year contract with German sportswear giant Adidas is expiring at the end of the season and its extension clause has not been activated
All Premier League games could be televised under Project Restart
the main reason behind the ambitious value projection for Watford is Kelme’s reach in the Asian market
The brand will reportedly champion the Watford kit across its network of stores in the region
Kelme has deals in Spain with top-flight outfits Alaves and Espanyol
Watford are reportedly keen to be the sole focus of the brand’s marketing efforts in the UK as they look to push past their current 30,000 annual kit sales
the Hornets had to compete with some of the world’s biggest clubs for marketing attention
The Adidas deal is due to end on 31st May but will likely get a short-term extension so the kit can be worn for the final nine games of the season

Kelme will be Watford’s new kit supplier from the start of next season
The deal brings to an end the club’s three-year association with Adidas — which began in 2017-18 — after an additional season extension wasn’t activated
The new multi-million-pound contract with Kelme
is set to be worth significantly more to the club
Watford could receive in the region of £10 million
a fivefold increase on their previous Adidas contract which is understood to have a value of £750,000 per season or £2.25 million
The main reason behind the ambitious projection is the new partner’s reach in the Asia market
global reach is still a key driver for football clubs
Kelme will open up opportunities for Watford to sell shirts and merchandise in significantly more stores to an ever-increasing market
Watford are the first English side acquired by the brand and it’s understood they will champion the new kit in their network of stores across the region
Being the sole focus for their marketing and communications efforts in the UK is also hoped to make a difference
The outgoing deal with Adidas — who took over when previous manufacturer Dryworld were ditched a year into a three-year contract — saw Watford fighting a losing battle for hanger space and exposure with global giants like Manchester United
Arsenal and other leading European clubs who were naturally prioritised
Watford sell approximately 30,000 kits a year but hope the new deal will see this number rise significantly — even if it still falls some way short of United’s estimated 2 million
The hope is the new kit — which is a closely guarded secret but will be yellow and black — will now be open to a larger customer base and improve brand awareness
“This will move the club to a different level due to that uplift
There’s going to be so much interest,” said one club source
is obviously key to starting the relationship on the right footing
The COVID-19 crisis has delayed an official announcement but it is expected plans will be put in place for a kit launch
when the club know the timetable for the remainder of this season and beyond
possibly revealing the new designs later this month
Traditionally this would be the time pre-orders or even the new kit itself would be part of the marketing drive
The Adidas deal — which was due to end on May 31st — is likely to be given a short-term extension meaning the existing kit will be worn for the final nine games of the season
Kelme — who supplied Real Madrid’s kit when they won the European Cup for the first time in 32 years in 1997-98 — also have partnerships with La Liga clubs Alaves and Espanyol
The latter link has proven a particular success due to China international Wu Lei’s success at the Barcelona-based club over the last two seasons
it’s thought Kelme will have more time to devote to Watford and therefore give them the opportunity to have a completely bespoke kit
The expectation is that rather than seeing another team playing in a kit that looks like your home or away shirt simply in another colour
the new design will not be replicated anywhere else
Eagle-eyed fans will have noticed that Polish side Vorskla Poltava have played in exactly the same green strip supplied to Watford in recent seasons
The Athletic has learnt that discussions over the design of the kit have been ongoing since last year — the lead time for manufacture is approximately eight to nine months — and according to one source even the smallest details have been discussed and pondered over
“Our kit guys were sitting down with their designers and choosing where zips went on the training wear
So it really has been a collaboration in terms of drawing all the stuff up,” they said.
Although some brand-conscious fans may have reservations about not having their team’s kit supplied by a more recognised brand like Adidas, Umbro or Nike, Watford have taken the decision to innovate to try and grow revenue streams outside of broadcast income. The club’s latest financial figures illustrated that commercial and match-day revenue is dwarfed by moneys raised from central Premier League payments
Watford have been impressed by Kelme’s set-up in China
having visited their factories which possess a huge workforce and the latest manufacturing technology
Kelme will also see this as an opportunity to grow their brand in the UK and potentially attract other teams in the Premier League into other more lucrative partnerships
Although it’s unclear the impact playing behind closed doors will have on shirt sales going forward
Not having the opportunity to have 20,000 fans passing through your retail outlets on match day every other week is going to make a mark
although the hope will be that extra global reach will help make up for it even in these uncertain times

Miguel Angel Lopez denies any involvement in Spanish doping investigation
the police investigation began in January 2021 when the Guardia Civil started to look into a suspected ring based in Caceres in western Spain
two people have been arrested and a further six are under investigation
Vicente Belda senior was a reputed former professional racer and a former sports director at the Spanish Kelme squad. His management career ended after he was linked to Spain’s most notorious anti-doping sting, Operación Puerto back in 2006
He was cleared of any charges eight years later
currently works as a soigneur for the Astana Qazaqstan team
There is no evidence or indication the team is involved
Colombia's Miguel Angel López was briefly suspended by his Astana Qazaqstan team after reports in Spain suggested he was under investigation for links to Marcos Maynar
Astana suspend Miguel Angel Lopez after Spanish reports links him to drug trafficking case
Speaking to the Spanish news agency Efe via his lawyers, López denied any wrongdoing and he was subsequently reinstated by Astana. On Thursday he quickly posted a message on social media.
"News has been published in different media where it is stated that I am being investigated in a supposed doping network," Lopez wrote.
"I currently don't have any active investigation or trials underway. My lawyers are ready to initiate any necessary legal action."

In a statement released on Thursday, which outlines the operation without naming any of those under investigation, the Guardia Civil said that the ring captured ‘clients’, one of whom is underage, through “various people closely connected to the world of professional sport, offering them the services of a well-known sports doctor.”
The Guardia Civil statement then describes how “These services included the preparation of training plans and nutrition programs as well as the consumption of medication and banned substances in sport.”
“During the investigation, it has been corroborated how these sportspeople, once they had been in contact with the doctor and his assistant, a Doctor of Physiology, were profiled medically through stress tests and other types of analysis."
"These tests were carried out in the Faculty of Sports Science in [the University of] Extremadura, where one of the key names under investigation was teaching, along with the fabrication, reception and storing of certain medicaments.”
The sportspeople were then given a specifically designed training plan, the Guardia Civil said, in which the consumption of substances banned both in Spain and by WADA were included. The annual price charged, depending on the athlete’s level and their likelihood of winning prize money, was up to 3,000 euros per season.
After a year’s investigation, three individuals who acted as distributors of the substances supplied by the ring and the final consumers were identified as operating in Portugal, Guipuzcoa in the Basque Country and Castellon in eastern Valencia, the police statement said. Coded message applications were used in some cases to increase the security of the ring's illegal operation.
Amongst the banned and/or unauthorized substances seized, the Guardia Civil said, were Actovegin - a form of concentrated calves’ blood used back in the day by Lance Armstrong and the US Postal team, Theophyline - a bronchodilator, and Menotropin.
As the investigation continues, two people have already been arrested on charges of trafficking substances and doping in sport, as well as belonging to a criminal organisation and money laundering, with a further six under investigation. Clients involved include cyclists, a trainer of a swimming club in Castellon and footballers from a team in Extremadura in the regional league.
The investigation is widely believed to be linked to the Guardia Civil’s lengthy enquiries into Doctor Marcos Maynar, described by El País newspaper on Thursday as “a sports doctor who is an old acquaintance of the anti-doping authorities.”
In 2009, Maynar was suspended from professional activities for ten years by the Portuguese cycling federation authorities on a number of charges, mostly relating with supplying banned substances when he was a team doctor at the Portuguese squad LA-MSS.
Another of the eight under investigation is the former cyclist Angel Vázquez Iglesias, banned for doping for four years from 2007 and 2010. Iglesias raced for the final year of his career at LA-MSS.

CHINA – After 12 days of intense competition
the men’s and women’s champions were crowned at the Kelme 2018 AUSF Football Cup
The men’s final between Thailand’s Bangkok Thonburi University (BTU) and Korea’s Myongji University (MJU) was a keenly contested one
eventually sending the title clash into a penalty shootout
It was the Thai team from BTU that emerged victorious
winning 6-5 in penalty kicks to be crowned the 2018 AUSF Football Cup champions
It was indeed a match befitting a final and was a treat for the 17,000-capacity crowd
The women’s final did not go down to the wire like the men’s
but it was a very closely fought match as well
College of Asian Scholars (CAS) from Thailand beat Donghua University (DHU) from China 1-0
as no.13 Orapin Waenngoen scored the lone goal of the match in the 23rd minute
Thailand returned home as the big winners from the tournament
claiming both the men’s and women’s trophies
winning 3rd place among the men and finishing runners-up in the women’s competition

It turned out to be a 4-0 win for the team from Beijing

Even though there was little doubt about the result by then
The match marked the start of the Asian University Sports Federation Football Cup that will continue until 10 November 2018
Sixteen men’s teams and seven women’s teams representing universities from various Asian countries and regions have gathered in Jinjiang for this event

and will continue to be stationed in this Chinese city through the editions in 2021
Clearly, Jinjiang is all set to become an epicenter of university football in the years to come

Watford’s new kit deal with Kelme – a first for the sportswear company in the Premier League – will land the club a larger fee
more freedom over design and a greater presence in China
Ke said his factory in Quanzhou used to make jerseys and hoodies for Kappa
the razor-thin profits of the original equipment manufacturer or OEM model pushed him to explore ways of building the company's own brand
It was searching for a "new engine" to tide over the difficulties of shrinking overseas orders and rising labor cost
"Companies can no longer make a name for themselves by bombarding consumers with advertisements
We thought buying big international brands might be a 'shortcut'
so we started as their brand franchisor in China," said Liu Zejun
Kelme sold its franchises in China to Ke's firm
The fast expansion of the Kelme brand in China led to a further deal between Yuanxiang and Kelme
the Chinese company acquired controlling shares in the Spanish sportswear company for 300 million yuan ($44.68 million)
buying foreign brands is only a step in Chinese companies' transition toward going global
The company considered design and scientific research as the key to improving the brand's value

the two new jerseys bring back a design classic
one of the most emblematic in the team’s history
the jersey on sale to the public will incorporate the embroidered logo of the EuroLeague
They may well be set to be playing their football in the Championship this coming season
but Watford have got a fresh new style to show off in English football’s second tier
thanks to wild design on the 20/21 home shirt from new technical partners Kelme
Kelme and Watford announced a new £10 million deal back in May
and now we have the first product of that new partnership
Carrying with it a healthy dose of Kaiser Chiefs vibes
the Watford 20/21 home shirt features a bold reinvention of the club’s traditional look
Watford fans have been less than receptive to change in the past – last season's move away from stripes to that 50/50 split being one such example – so it will be interesting to see how they deal with something as radical as this
The bespoke design is the first to be produced exclusively for the Hornets by the club’s new technical partner Kelme
The design sees the traditional colours of the club reinterpreted in a series of rays
radiating out from the club crest on the left of the chest
The sponsor logo has been tastefully incorporated into the design
appearing in black so as not to jar the overall aesthetics
The raglan sleeves feature a distressed design
with hints of yellow fading through the black
In a move away from what tends to be the case with some of the bigger brands
the shirt available for supporters is exactly the same as the shirt that will be worn by the players
The Watford 20/21 home shirt is available now from the club's web store
Spanish brand Kelme provide Watford with a rather striking third shirt for the 21/22 season
The bespoke dark green strip with golden trim features an eye-catching jacquard pattern woven into the main body

Watford’s current three-year deal with adidas expires at the end of the season
and while that is worth an estimated £750,000 per year
that figure is set to rise to as much as £2.5 million per year under the terms of the new deal with Kelme
Despite the season looking like it will run past the end of the club’s deal with the Three Stripes
it is likely that the Hornets will complete proceedings in their current kit before donning the new Kelme strip at the start of the 2020/21 campaign – whenever that may be

Watford are eyeing up the opportunity to expand their appeal in the Asian market
Kelme has developed to become a household name in the East
thanks mainly to the sponsorship of China’s League One and League Two (the second and third tier of competition in the country) as well as collaborations with teams from Hong Kong
could actually offer a greater level of importance to Watford than the actual finances put on the table
although it’s all part and parcel of what looks to be a promising deal for the Hornets
Expect an official announcement from the club in the coming weeks
with the first Kelme Watford kits to follow soon after

potentially making them the top-earning football team in the world in terms of kit sponsorship
After numerous issues with their Castore kits over the last couple of years
Aston Villa are reportedly set to sign a new deal with adidas
which will commence from the beginning of the 24/25 season
Portuguese side Boavista Futebol Clube celebrate their 120th anniversary
Kelme have produced a special commemorative jersey
which will be used throughout the 23/24 season as an alternative shirt
Jude Bellingham’s star keeps rising both on and off the pitch
and reports are now suggesting that the Real Madrid midfielder and Golden Boy is set to sign a multi-million pound endorsement deal with Louis Vuitton
The good news keeps coming for Liverpool as the club are reportedly in discussion with kit manufacturer New Balance about an improved deal that could potentially see them surpass Man United's £75m per year deal with adidas

an additional season extension to the ongoing partnership wasn’t activated

the coronavirus crisis is the reason that an official announcement of the Kelme deal has not yet been made

Workers are busy stitching and ironing the white and blue jerseys of the Spanish football club Espanyol in a Kelme factory in the Chinese city of Quanzhou to meet the soaring domestic demand boosted by Wu Lei

As innovation progresses it's inevitable that products will be resigned to the archives
football doesn't stand still and much like the players
Throughout the last twenty years of football gear history
there have been some fantastic boots that have been hung up
Considering the continued rumblings about the looming death of many a boot on the horizon
we decided it was time to look back on some of our favourite boots that were worn
cleaned and retired to that boot room upstairs
We've stuck our neck on the line and put them in order..
we really couldn’t narrow this down to one of their boots
Great kangaroo leather options and even a boot made out of “shark leather” have now gone by the wayside as Kelme
focuses on turf options and products for other sports
Mizuno Wave SuperSonic - While the world quietly covets any new Mizuno product that creeps onto the market
Mizuno was one of the first to find themselves catering to the crowds hunting for a “control” boot
With Mizuno’s everpresent leather upper coupled with memory foam touch pads near the forefoot
but struggled to cope with the Ignitus and Neo ranges.8. Pele Sports Trinity - There haven't been many brands that have exploded onto the scene like Pele Sports
Not to mention the simple truth that many in the industry marked the Trinity as a game changer for the future of football equipment
Despite some early durability issues with the release
the innovative stud pattern and extremely impressive synthetic upper made up a boot that quickly won the hearts of anyone that slipped on a pair
but one of the biggest cult followings for a boot can certainly be claimed by the TUNiT series that the F50 was known for long before the ounces were shaved off
The ability to change your studs on the fly made it feel like you had three different boots all in one
and coupling the boot with interchangeable upper options made it feel like the ultimate boot for customization
Umbro GeoMetra - The most recent casualty to make the list
the GeoMetra gave us everything we loved about the control boot craze and slapped it on a kangaroo leather upper
Not to mention the pass pad we would eventually see on the original LZ..
it felt like too many saw this boot as a CTR rip-off to truly give it a chance
If not for the odd circular stud pattern that Umbro insisted to stick on the soleplate (that looked EXACTLY like the pattern from the non-elite CTR)
it might have had a chance for survival.5. Nike T90 - For many
the T90 stayed true to the power boot silo as the Predator slowly seemed to drift away
when most of us realised the entry of the HyperVenom was inevitable
it still seemed unlikely that the T90 would make way for a boot being marketed towards agility
With a long history before the fins and pads existed
it is certainly tough for a boot to last so long without any of the major updates ever being anything other than well received
Still feels like Nike have never replaced the gap the T90 left.4
the sheer quality of the evoPOWER and evoSPEED have left little room for mourning
but the PWR-Cat and V-series from PUMA always seemed like the choice of boots you snagged if you wanted to stand out from all the Swooshes and Stripes in the changing rooms
both styles of PUMA boots created big fan-bases and always seemed to be the first to experiment with odd colorways (we remember the Tokyo uppers quite fondly)
One of the few sets of boots that garnered decent replacements.3
Nike CTR360 - The beginning of the “control” silo
and one of the biggest components of an arc that now has Nike standing firmly above their fellow competitors on the market
Each incarnation still has incredibly loyal fans that can be found scouring the internet in order to prevent the silo from ever actually dying
the CTR III will always be an easy entry into our boot hall of fame and the original will always be connected directly to the 2010 World Cup
adidas SuperNova - The much beloved SuperNova was almost a version of the Predator Mania that offered the kangaroo leather upper and Predator feel
but without any of the Predator elements on the upper
Despite the masses typically loving the Predator elements
it makes sense that some would prefer the Pred built with ultimate comfort
An adiPURE with a bit of extra bite. 1
Nike Ronaldinho Dois - For anyone new to the boot game
the Dois was one of the first big signature boots to exist on the marketplace
Plush leather with classic designs that appealed to anyone looking for a boot with an absolutely buttery touch and ridiculous levels of comfort
It didn’t hurt that the face of the boot was at the height of his powers
but this boot seems like it could have become successful in its own right
let's talk re-releases...Got a favourite discontinued football boot
but before we take a step into the new year we're taking a look back to pick out our top 30 football boots of the past decade
Anything launched between 2010 and 2019 is fair game and we've spent far too long re-arranging and overthinking so finally..
