when two shots were fired from a white car travelling towards the establishment
The owner says she has now restored normality
but that she still has no idea why the terrifying incident targeted her café
The window is still shattered where one of the bullets struck - the most visible sign of the shooting - but the hole is hidden with a promotional poster
“They’ve already come to take the measurements to put in new glass
they say it’ll be ready in four days,” Zélia Dias Luís told our sister publication
where she works from early in the morning until late at night
she explained that the other bullet hit the window frame
said the attack was “the scariest situation” of her life
“We've never experienced such a thing in Differdange
It really makes you think,” she told Contacto
Neither the gun nor who fired it,” she said - adding that it is not clear who the bullets were intended for
Dias Luís said she is fairly confident the shots were not aimed at her
and she finds it hard to believe that any of her regular customers who have frequented the café for years
“I’ve already asked my regulars if it was aimed at any of them and they’ve told me no.”
Six police cars arrived at the scene with reinforcements on the night of the event
They began their investigation immediately and returned the next day
closing the establishment for several hours while they worked inside and in the surrounding area
The area is a known hotspot for drug trafficking and consumption and that is considered a likely link to the incident
The café owner said the situation on the Differdange street is similar to many parts of the capital city “especially in Gare
where it’s a thousand times worse than Differdange; the misery is much worse”
Dias Luís added: “Here it's more [...] young kids of 18
in little balls under the name of ‘chocolate’
The café owner explained that she has called police more than 50 times within a year to report the youngsters smoking outside her premises
There’s already talk of a drug-related score-settling,” Dias Luís said
wouldn't the person have got out of the car to shoot directly at the target
Shooting at the façade of a café isn't settling scores: it’s hitting whoever appears in front of you.”
one young man who was present at the time was also present when shots were fired in Niederkorn in November
He is allegedly being considered as a possible target by the investigating police

14-year-old Luca had a heart attack while playing football at the Differdange youth house in Oberkorn
Just 15 minutes after the youth house had opened that day
Daisy and Jesse were alerted by Luca's classmates of his sudden state
Daisy detailed in conversation with RTL how Luca began to vomit and was unresponsive to her questions
Daisy swiftly contacted 112 for emergency service
who told her to press her hand on his stomach and let them know when he breathed
Daisy then described how she realised that she was giving him a cardiac massage
until Luca finally started breathing again
Daisy then described how right after that crucial moment she noticed how the other kids were reacting
and that's when Daisy realised what had just happened and what she had gone through
She told herself to pull herself together and to not cry in front of the kids
her coworker Jesse was busy taking care of the other kids
proceeding to take them outside of the hall
Jesse recounted how he felt confident that Daisy was handling the situation well
so that he focused on ensuring other kids' wellbeing during that shocking encounter
He was "reanimated" – a word that Roberto Traversini

Luca expressed his wish to play football again
Although he's not allowed to do any kind of sport until 23 April
he feels well and is impatiently waiting for that day
some tests need to be run before the 14-year-old boy can follow his passion for sports again
That hasn't stopped Luca from going to the youth house almost every day during these school holidays
Daisy and the team are feeling much more at ease
it came in the form of the Differdange educational staff
what he needs most is a bit of patience – something that Luca candidly admits that he doesnt have – in order to go back to the life of a normal boy

The minister for labour, Georges Mischo, and the minister for finance, Gilles Roth, inaugurated the new Adem jobs agency branch and the new offices of Luxembourg Inland Revenue (ACD) in Differdange, both located in the same building at 4 place Marie-Paule Molitor Peffer.
On 19 November, the tax office moved into the Aurea tower in the centre of Differdange. At present, nine agents working under the local tax office manager, Alain Moos, are at the service of the municipality's taxpayers.
"The aim of the Luxembourg Inland Revenue is to offer taxpayers a high-quality service,” stated the finance minister (CSV). “To achieve this, we provide them with a reception area that is both pleasant and functional. We also ensure that our staff enjoy a working environment that is conducive to their wellbeing and efficiency. In this way, we will be even closer to the public, which is a win-win situation for everyone.”
In the press release, the ACD points out that, since November, it has launched a new contact centre dedicated to processing multilingual contact forms, enabling all taxpayers to benefit from faster handling and optimised follow-up of their requests. These forms and answers to the most frequently asked questions are available on the acd.lu website.

Burglars in Luxembourg are adopting increasingly creative tactics
as demonstrated by a recent incident in Differdange where a woman was used as bait in an armed robbery
had invited a woman he met on a dating platform to his home on Saturday evening
The intruders allegedly threatened the victim with a firearm and
physically assaulted him before stealing his phone and laptop
fled the scene along with the three assailants
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident
The result comes despite only one student at EIDE
The other 68 students passed to give the school a 99% success rate
the average grade of all students at the school placed it bottom of the league table
a result that was flagged by LSAP MP Francine Closener during a parliamentary session on European schools on Wednesday
2023 was the first time the European Schools’ system had welcomed the Accredited European School of Differdange (as well as that of Copenhagen) to the European Baccalaureate examinations, the Report on European Baccalaureate 2023 said.
According to the report, the average grade of EIDE pupils was 67.80. In the two other European Schools in the grand duchy, Luxembourg I in Kirchberg (with 229 pupils) and II in Mamer (with 200 pupils), the average grade in 2023 was 77.77 and 77.19 respectively.
The highest average grade was 82.10, at the European School of Frankfurt, and the average grade of all schools combined was 77.02. Grades achieved over the course of the school year account for 50% of the final result, with a further 35% from written exam grades, and 15% from oral exam grades.
Teachers' union SEW/OGBL has analysed the report in a publication titled International schools: miracle solution or chimera.
Education Minister Claude Meisch did not specifically address the EIDE students’ 2023 baccalaureate results in his statement to the Chamber of Deputies.

burglars targeted a shop in Differdange specialising in video games and trading cards.According to the owner's son
the thieves made off with approximately 100 rare Pokémon cards
as well as four to five boxes of booster packs
The stolen items are estimated to be worth around €30,000
The owner's son confirmed that the cards were insured
and the business expects to recover some of the financial loss
The break-in was discovered on Tuesday morning when a staff member arrived at the shop and noticed the door had been forced open
they found numerous cards scattered across the floor and immediately alerted the police
The police have confirmed that the break-in took place between Monday evening and Tuesday morning
A forensic police unit was on site and an incident report has been drawn up
a group of workers gather every evening around 21:00 to catch the 607 bus of the RGTR network at the Schaarfen Eck bus stop to go to Oberkorn in Differdange
they are unable to find a place to sit because the bus is full
But passengers say drivers do not allow them to stand for safety reasons because the bus goes at higher speeds on the motorway
"It's happened several times that we leave work
get to the bus stop and the driver says he won't take us because the bus is full
We work all day and in the evening we want to go home and we can't because we're not allowed on the bus,” a 44-year-old Portuguese cleaning worker told Contacto
Sometimes they ask the driver to take a diversion along the national road instead of the motorway which would mean they wouldn’t have to deboard
The workers also have to spend a long time waiting for the bus to arrive
"Sometimes you have to wait more than half an hour or even an hour for the next bus
“And the problem is that the next bus is full too
"The bus is always overcrowded and if it takes too many people
It's been a misery and a disgrace,” said Diamantino Azevedo
lies in increasing the number of buses and increasing their size
the 607 bus line has two vehicles – a 40-seater and a 60-seater
He says more 60-seat buses are required on the route
says that she has already sent an e-mail to the Ministry of Mobility to explain the situation and was told that they would discuss the matter at a future meeting
"the Public Transport Authority (ATP) has not yet received any complaints"
buses with a minimum capacity of 60 seats are required throughout this route" and that "sanctions are foreseen in the event of non-compliance with this requirement"
the ministry assures that ATP "is endeavouring to resolve the capacity problems as quickly as possible and will make representations to the company in question [which serves the RGTR network] so that the necessary vehicles are put into service
in accordance with the contractual commitments"

there has been little doubt about Differdange’s championship prospects from the beginning of the season
On the back of a dramatic exit from the UEFA Conference League at the hands of Kazakh champions Ordabasy
FCD managed to start the domestic campaign with a 14-game unbeaten streak
building up a significant advantage heading into the winter break
After the departure of top scorer Jorginho in February
helping to maintain a reliable threat up front
thriving on the services of Guillaume Trani and Artur Abreu playing behind him
and linking up well with his partners up front
But it was not the attacking section that earned plaudits across the continent for their efforts this year
FCD’s defence has been notoriously strong since the beginning of the season
conceding only five goals in 25 appearances
Brazilian journeyman goalkeeper Felipe has had an illustrious career
The experienced backline consisting of Juan Bedouret
Théo Brusco and Kévin d’Anzico can also count on each other to nullify any opposition threat during most games
Differdange have not conceded a goal in 2025 so far
extending their streak to 11 games in all competitions with another clean sheet on Saturday
An open-top bus parade was already on standby last week
as favourable results elsewhere could have confirmed FCD’s championship even sooner
but the celebrations could finally kick off this weekend
Manager Pedro Resende will undoubtedly want to keep his players’ eyes on the prize
A Luxembourgish Cup quarter-final awaits the team in Pétange
and a domestic double seems well within reach for this group of players
As is expected from a manager with his record
there is no shortage of professional offers from across the continent
The head coach has previously spoken about his ambition to make the step up when the opportunity presents itself
and his desired changes in the Differdange setup might exceed the club’s budget for 2025/26
The attraction of the Champions League might help to convince him and any prospective signings to choose this project over other alternatives
It will also increase the team’s financial stability
this squad looks well-equipped to build on a rampant campaign (23 wins
one draw and one loss so far) and deliver silverware in 2026
A long-awaited sign of life from struggling Fola Esch presented itself
as the oldest club in the country ended their 11-game unbeaten streak in dominant fashion
The Eschers defeated Union Titus Pétange 4-2 away from home – for context
four goals is more than they have scored in their previous nine fixtures over the calendar year combined
besides a solitary draw against current opponents Union in the autumn
The match also markes the first time Fola have scored a goal for over a month
Ronny Souto’s men are still nine points away from the relegation play-off zone
due to a severely inferior goal difference compared to 14th-placed Bettembourg
Fola’s final stretch involves a number of dead rubbers and sees them facing some unknown quantities
are involved in numerous battles off the pitch and their financial problems have affected their line-ups throughout the season
Bettembourg and Victoria Rosport are bottom-half opponents that must be defeated if Fola still retain any hope of pulling off a great escape
They will also have to play an Escher derby at home
against a Jeunesse side soon losing their manager and coping with several long-term injuries on their roster
Fola has been flirting with relegation for the best part of three years
but have always managed to rise from the dead in the spring to survive in the unlikeliest of ways
This season is the weakest they have looked in that period
and this solitary win might prove to be a mere flash in the pan
it could prove to be a vital call for action at just the right time to salvage their season
The Easter weekend saw four of the top six teams face each other in two derbies with the potential to single-handedly decide which teams will earn the lucrative European spots to join champions Differdange
UNA Strassen needed to defeat Swift Hesper to overtake them on the table
and potentially sneak all the way up to third in the rankings
Stefano Bensi’s team experienced a minor blip earlier this month
but climbed straight out of it with a 4-0 drubbing in Pétange last time out
Hesper proved to be a tougher nut to crack
and it took the guest's top scorer to tip the scales in Strassen’s favour: Brazilian marksman Matheus scored a crucial brace in the first half
with a Hesper equaliser sandwiched in between
took the necessary steps towards achieving their end-of-season goal by overcoming one of their main rivals for the podium (although Hesper is disqualified from continental football)
before picking up results in the last few weeks
it took a managerial change to turn the tide
but internal recruit Samuel Scholer has been a resounding success in the dugout
they were primed to take advantage of any minor slip-up from Swift
stretching their winning streak to six games
seeing off F91 Dudelange in a more one-sided encounter than the 2-1 scoreline would suggest
Omar Natami took the lead at Stade Jos Haupert before Enzo Lima managed to equalise following a set piece
Niederkorn were the more dangerous team throughout the second half
and scored the winner on the hour mark through Lars Gerson’s first goal since returning to the Grand Duchy after 16 years in the professional world
Progrès cemented their podium place and closed the gap to second to a single point
but an overall solid campaign is in danger of fizzling out if they lose their momentum for the final few clashes of 2024/25
who find themselves bottom of the table after a 0-4 thrashing by Racing Union Luxembourg

and remain in the running for a Conference League spot
relegation beckons as they find themselves 15 points off survival
Wiltz 71 are staying just outside of the relegation play-off zone following a 1-1 draw in Esch-sur-Alzette
Ben Biver’s second-half equaliser ensured the Northerners remain above the line for now
while mid-table Jeunesse announced the departure of manager Arnaud Bordi at the end of the season
Another relegation six-pointer brought a narrow Rodange win in Bettembourg
in a game where both sides scored from the penalty spot
Sylvain Atieda’s early strike proved to be decisive
giving his team a realistic chance of outright survival
while last season’s second-tier champions Bettembourg can continue to worry about their fate
US Hostert booked their ticket for next season’s BGL Ligue
by definitively sealing their survival in a 4-1 victory against US Mondorf
The Angry Goats seemingly squandered their last opportunity to break into the top six after this major upset
while Hostert continue to turn heads having settled into the top flight quickly following their promotion via the play-offs

A traffic accident occurred on Rue Emile Mark in Differdange on Saturday at around 1.45pm when a moving vehicle struck a parked car
the parked car was unoccupied at the time of the incident
The involved vehicle carried two occupants - the driver emerged unharmed
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances of the collision
officers found two individuals suffering from stab injuries
One of the victims was immediately transported to hospital and underwent emergency surgery
Three suspects were arrested in connection with the attack
Two of them appeared before a judge on Sunday morning
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation
police were called to an apartment building on Avenue de la Liberté in Differdange following reports of an intoxicated individual behaving aggressively
Several officers were dispatched to the scene
where they encountered the individual using the building's lift to move between floors
The situation escalated when the person attempted to attack an officer with a fire extinguisher
the officers successfully defended themselves and subdued the individual
the person was placed in a police cell to sober up
Authorities issued a fine for rebellion against police officers
Last season’s champions FC Differdange have been merciless all throughout 2024/25
with one of the most stubborn defences in Europe (conceding 5 goals in 24 games) coupled with a reliable attacking unit breaking down defences time and again from the very first round of games
and a single draw and loss each along the way
the first opportunity to renew their title came last weekend
when a favourable set of results could have seen Pedro Resende’s crew celebrate for the second year in a row
As far as their part of the equation was concerned
they managed to make it over the line on Saturday – just about
produced one of their most organised and disciplined displays in a long time
barring a single individual error from goalkeeper Leonardo Silvestre
whose misplaced parry led to Andreas Buch’s early opener
Differdange had a few more chances to double their lead shortly after
but the defenders also had to pay close attention as the guests proved threatening on the counter on numerous occasions
FCD’s veteran goalkeeper Felipe did well to keep the attackers at bay to see the game out in the absence of Kévin d’Anzico
three important cogs in their stellar season
All that the champions-elect could do was to root for an upset at the Stade Jos Nosbaum the following day
hosted an in-form Mondorf team slowly climbing up the table
any hopes of an open-top bus parade on the day were short-lived
as F91 took the lead less than 7 minutes after kick-off on Sunday
and added another one before the half-hour mark
Chris Stumpf proved to be the thorn in FCD’s side
as an inspired effort from the wing-back resulted in a goal and an assist in the 3-0 rout
The win increases Dudelange’s advantage over third-placed Niederkorn to four points
and successfully delays Differdange’s official title renewal by at least one week
Despite the unlucky outcome for the current champions
this resurgence from Dudelange is little more than a temporary inconvenience
Differdange still only require one win from their remaining five fixtures to put all doubts to bed
The next time they play in front of their home crowd
will surely provide a long-awaited release for fans and players alike
There have been few better teams than Union Titus Pétange in Luxembourg since the turn of the year
If it wasn’t for Differdange’s utterly dominating march through the season
UTP would likely receive a lot more praise than they do now: their defensive record and their recent form since the restart have only been overshadowed by the soon-to-be champions’ accomplishments
The arrival of manager Akil Momade contributed plenty to this defensive resilience
vulnerable team without a sense of identity turned into an exciting prospect practically overnight
Club captain André Barrela has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the division for a number of years now
but the defensive setup ahead of him has been tweaked significantly
bolstered by the signing of wing-back Ayoub Erraji
has borne fruit so far and resulted in Union starting the year with 17 points from their first eight games
their task was to overcome a struggling Strassen side
who started experiencing issues in the opponents’ half for the first time since manager Stefano Bensi’s appointment in the autumn
The two clubs have had contrasting fortunes recently
but the game played out differently from what anyone would have predicted
who seems to have found his scoring boots after two sub-par performances this month
Gauthier Bernardelli’s header was also instrumental to the hosts’ success
coming from a neat interplay between two substitutes
as Zachary Hadji assisted Charles Azong in putting the cherry on top of a more than convincing display
The race for the last podium spot is undoubtedly the most intriguing part of the league table at the moment
With no more than three points separating third from sixth
it all depends on the late-season form of the contenders to decide who gets to compete in the Europa Conference League alongside F91 Dudelange and the eventual cup winners
Strassen looked to be drifting away from the top three in recent weeks
but a comeback at just the right time keeps all their rivals on their toes for next week
Since Hesperange’s UEFA license was revoked last week
it is shaping up to be a three-way competition between Niederkorn
Strassen and Racing Union for the elusive prize
The lower end of the league table generated a lot less drama this season than usual – mainly thanks to two painfully unlucky (and struggling) teams in Fola Esch and Mondercange
Both teams have found it hard to compete from day one
and their undesired fate will be all but confirmed in a matter of time
some stories in the bottom half do deserve an honourable mention
have been a peculiar team to watch under coach Marc Thomé – an exciting
they have another important strength – they win games
Defences often find the jump from the second tier to the BGL Ligue quite astounding
and newly-promoted teams have a tendency to give up all attacking firepower in exchange for a somewhat solid defence
to save face amidst a sense of hopelessness
Hostert’s approach is wildly different: they know their backline is capable of conceding some big chances
and their high-pressing style leaves them fragile against teams playing a more direct brand of football
but they remain confident in their ability to simply outscore anyone
they have relied extensively on Kenan Avdusinović
The winger went from scoring only four goals in his first 82 top-tier appearances to a dazzling 17 goal contributions in 19 matches since the summer – coupled with his efforts in the cup
he averages a goal or an assist every 91.25 minutes
His numbers would be outstanding even in a top-of-the-table attack
let alone a team meandering in mid-table having only achieved promotion via the play-offs last season
when his team travelled to Rosport for a game that could be described as a dead rubber – both teams being safe from the relegation dogfight from a much earlier stage than they had planned
Hostert took the lead in the 30th minute through a Diogo Fernandes strike
Assister Mathieu Leroux turned scorer only six minutes afterwards
as he finished off an opportunity from an Avdusinović assist
Ben Vogel was able to score a consolation goal for Victoria after the break
sorely lacking the forward’s instinct upfront playing without a natural striker
Rosport’s problems mostly arise from their small squad size
losing their best players to wealthier clubs and spending big on a few replacements instead of increasing squad depth
have been promoting from within and look for creative solutions to manage their roster
It is safe to say they have uncovered a real gem when acquiring Avdusinović from the fringes of the Swift Hesper squad
Racing Union had to face an unexpectedly competitive Hesper side – there were reports of players planning a strike and sending out the U18 team
but some of the late payments have been settled in time to convince the starters
Thanks to a Yann Mabella brace and Néstor Monge’s goal
and came within two points of overtaking Swift
Fola Esch suffered a third consecutive 2-0 defeat
They looked resigned to their lower-league fate as they left empty-handed against Progrès Niederkorn
provided both goals as they leapfrogged Hesper for third place under interim manager Samuel Scholer
Wiltz 71 ended a run of five defeats on the spin by getting the job done against a Mondercange side severely lacking in attack
Nawfel Saïdi produced an assist before converting a penalty to give his team some breathing room
as challengers Bettembourg and Rodange both battle the Oesling club for survival
Rodange grabbed a crucial win at home against Jeunesse Esch to boost their chances of avoiding a one-legged relegation play-off
fairly one-sided 2-0 win comes as little surprise given Jeunesse have looked blunt all season
and have little to play for as they occupy 10th place
while Rodange are still fighting for their lives
Luxembourg police were called to Rue Michel Rodange in Differdange following a physical altercation
though two individuals were still engaged in the fight and had to be separated by authorities
Five people directly involved in the brawl were taken to the police station
police responded to multiple noise complaints late Friday night and into Saturday morning
The disturbances were reported in several areas
the individuals responsible complied by turning down the music upon the officers' arrival
It is impossible to determine exactly how big Swift Hesper’s annual budget is
it was always amongst the highest in the country
enabling them to lure seasoned professionals and up-and-coming foreign talents to the Holleschbierg training complex on a regular basis (like Rachid Alioui
Hesper has been successful at outbidding their direct domestic competitors for some of the biggest names and most reliable players in recent BGL Ligue history (such as Dominik Stolz
The player of the match against Wiltz 71 this Sunday was 19-year-old homegrown playmaker Yanis Bouazzati
supported by 22-year-old talent Lucas Correia upfront
Both of them have seen their playing time increase drastically from last season – but not by choice
The demonstrations against US Mondorf in December 2024
resulting in a forfeit and a hefty fine for Swift
laid bare the scale of the problems at the boardroom level
Players have not received any salary in 2025 so far
bonuses have been withheld for even longer
and some former employees have still not been paid their wages from before this season’s start
over a dozen players decided to jump ship in the winter window
terminating their contracts and taking a step back in their careers just to escape the toxic atmosphere presiding in the Hesperange premises as of late
Discontent among the playing squad is still just as fierce
thanks to the payments that either cannot arrive or are purposefully not being sent
has long held the reputation of a businessman who doesn’t like when things don’t go his way
Judging by the sheer scale of investment poured into the project in the last five years
Hesper could regularly be the runaway title winners – and when their season goes off the rails
Becca has frequently been described as 'rather forgetful' with the monthly payments
Repercussions for the club haven’t been in short supply either: UEFA has imposed a three-window transfer ban on Swift
preventing the team from signing any players until September 2026 as things stand
Their continental license was also revoked last season
depriving them of the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Conference League
despite a podium finish on that year’s BGL Ligue table
UEFA’s deadline for the yearly financial accounts for all competing clubs passed on 31 March
with Hesper once again failing to comply with therules
their current third-place spot in the league will only bring in modest domestic revenues instead of the grand exposure of stepping on the biggest stage
Hesper are continuously struck by these setbacks just as their project seems to take shape
Their squad is considerably less bloated than in recent years
and youngsters regularly have the chance to show themselves
Menai has been working at the club for years
and is proving to be the more sensible choice than another outside hire
Another assured display against Wiltz had the team 3-0 up by half-time
after a first-minute red card for opposition defender Moise Ngwisani largely left the guests vulnerable to counter-attacks
Correia and Bouazzati scored and assisted once each
while Dominik Stolz chipped in with a goal of his own
before a last-minute consolation goal set the final scoreline
their only aim is to finish as high as possible in the league
And the most important thing is to keep showing up for the matches: another strike and forfeit would bring an automatic disqualification and demotion to the second tier
It naturally took some adjustment for Progrès Niederkorn to find themselves after the lengthy winter break
The club’s business model lends itself to big-money sales abroad
often leaving the club exposed in certain positions if a good enough offer comes in for their star players
Losing Issa Bah (to Serbian first-tier Radnički 1923) and Kenny Mixtur (to French third-tier Villefranche) was a huge blow to their attack
and recently-signed Vincent Boesen needed time to settle into the new surroundings after arriving from Germany
foreshadowed the club’s ambitious plans for the future
A much more defensive approach was chosen by then-manager Jeff Strasser in February
relying on the best players at his disposal without balancing out the attacking shortcomings
with plenty of knowledge of the club’s workings
and changed little from what once worked in the Strasser era
The Wasps are on a five-game unbeaten streak
registering four wins in a row in all competitions
Their current form resembles the strongest iterations of modern-day Progrès in the mid-2010s
Their last two games in particular were essential: a 3-1 victory in the capital against Racing was crucial to ensure Progrès came out on top
and it further pushed direct competitor RFCUL downwards in their negative spiral
Progrès took it one step further by grabbing a win and a clean sheet against one of the most ruthless
well-oiled attacking lines in the division in Strassen
They inflicted a second successive defeat on UNA after their unbeaten 14-game run which leapfrogged them to fourth place – a spot that might hold increased significance in the league table after Hesper’s expulsion from the UEFA Conference League
ready to snatch the final continental place while looking as confident as ever
nine points separate the teams between second and seventh – the order of the chasing pack can (and does) change every week
they might just end up as the biggest beneficiaries of the end-of-season chaos unfolding
FC Differdange once again showed off their strength by cruising past a 10-man Jeunesse Esch team while at a game away from home
Luxembourg international Kévin d’Anzico took the lead in the first-half stoppage time
followed by a last-gasp effort from midfielder Leandro to double the lead and seal the game for the title holders
This was FCD’s 21st win in 2024/25 over 23 games
The only games they failed to score a single goal were a 0-0 draw against Hesperange
F91 Dudelange’s stumble on Sunday increased the gap between the top two to 17 points
The equation is simple: if Differdange beat Bettembourg this week
and F91 fail to win against Mondorf one day later
over a month and a half before the end of the season
Differdange retained the core of last season’s title-winning squad
and managed to replace all the departing players adequately
they lost their main source of goals in Jorginho
but went one step further by signing the creative Argentinian playmaker
But the key to their success has been the togetherness and discipline fostered by manager Pedro Resende
who keeps showing his worth in both domestic and continental environments
He has previously come close to knocking out both Olimpija Ljubljana and Maribor in recent years
while the team’s latest European adventure ended in a dramatic penalty shootout loss against Kazakh champions Ordabasy
Whether they go again or not seems to have been decided already
The squad is ready for another attempt at a league-phase qualification
and the summer should go by without many of the current stars leaving
Guillaume Trani’s situation is yet to be resolved
but his departure has long been expected; goalkeeper Felipe is 41 years old
but the chance to hear the Champions League anthem for the first time ever might spur him on; d’Anzico couldattract suitors from abroad
but he is not particularly keen on leaving yet; everyone else’s place in the team looks set
FCD will stand a good chance in the early stages of the qualifiers
and perhaps even break some records along the way
Victoria Rosport’s unbeaten run in the league reached seven games (two wins
Ernesto Carratala-Jiménez’s double keeps Victoria safely out of any relegation play-off discussions
while Bettembourg remain on the brink of dropping down a level
Hostert’s Kenan Avdusinović has been one of the revelations of the season
and his latest goal kept a point at Stade Jos Becker against a 10-man Dudelange team
The impressive result gets the Green-and-Whites even closer to achieving their best-ever season in the top-flight
while Dudelange’s title hopes are all but dead given their 17-point gap to first
Rodange stopped a resurgent Mondercange side with a 2-0 victory
keeping themselves firmly in contention for survival
Mondercange are now eight points away from relegation play-offs
and even with the recent uptick in performances
their comeback might be coming a little too late now
They don’t have a single point to show for in 2025
and their goal difference for the past eight games is a horrendous 3-25
They contained US Mondorf for most of the game on Sunday
before Billel Abdelkadous broke the deadlock around the hour mark
Another strike from Mirza Hasanbegović decidedly sealed the three points for the Angry Goats
Union Titus Pétange’s recent form is second only to Differdange
Pétange’s latest victims were a disenchanted Racing Union
who once again lost by the narrowest of margins and now find themselves in the lowly sixth place
With a growing number of administrative processes having been relocated to the digital sphere
it has become increasingly difficult for some elderly citizens to keep up with technology and manage life by themselves
To foster a productive exchange with digital natives
the 'SmartCafé' in Differdange is now bringing both generations together so that younger and more tech-savvy people can lend a helping hand to those in need – all while enjoying a piece of cake and a cup of coffee
which is supported by the Family Affairs Ministry
Differdange Alderman Jerry Hartung explained that people come to the SmartCafé for both very general and also more specific questions
Anne Frausing from GoldenMe – a non-profit focused on teaching elderly people digital skills who co-run the SmartCafé – noted that some even write down entire pages full of questions
which then generally lead to discussions of broader issues like phishing scams
Sabine Reuter-Schmitz is one of those eager to learn more about technology and has her eyes set on understanding how to navigate the web and set up an email account
she also voiced excitement over the possibilities that tablets offer
saying that she already tried painting on such a device
The SmartCafé is open every Monday from 2–4pm. Joining the meet-up is free, but people have to register beforehand, which they can do through the websites of GoldenMe and the Differdange municipality
providing passers-by with cool and clean air in a pilot project due to last for a year. The tree was installed earlier this month in the Place des Alliés in the town of Oberkorn
one of five which have been rented by the local council
A second tree has already been installed at the hospital in Niederkorn
The Citytree comprises eight pallets of moss
The hot and often polluted urban air is channelled through the moss
which cleans and cools the air and then expels it again
“The temperature around the tree is therefore up to four degrees celsius lower than in the surrounding area,” Differdange alderman Tom Ulveling (CSV) told the Luxemburger Wort
“The Citytree has the cooling effect that 81 trees have,” he added
Anyone who sits on the bench right next to the wooden box will feel a cool breeze even on warm days
The new tree was made by Greencity Solutions of Germany
The company says the tree can compensate for as much CO2 as 44 conventional trees and can reduce the fine dust in the air by up to 82%
There are also devices inside the box that measure the pollutants in the air and transmit the data directly to the responsible department of the municipality
The Citytrees take up comparatively little space and
which makes them the ideal solution for built-up areas where it is not possible to create new green spaces
desealing will continue to be preferred and real trees will be planted
such as at the school in Bock,” a spokesperson for Differdange council said
the plan is to test the artificial trees for 12 months and then decide on their future
But we have the option of buying them then,” Ulveling said
The municipality is spending 80,000 euros on the rental
which is intended to help the city become net climate neutral by 2030

Meeting a growing demand for innovative solar installations
Luxembourg’s first floating solar farm was inaugurated in October 2021
Installed on a former cooling pond belonging to ArcelorMittal Differdange
the solar farm consists of 25 000 square metres of solar panels with a surface area of 5.7 hectares
The electricity produced amounts to 3 GWh/year and is able to power nearly 800 local homes - the annual electricity usage of approximately 3200 people
The electricity is fed into the local grid and contributes to Luxembourg’s energy self-sufficiency
in addition to making Luxembourg a part of the increasing trend towards floating PV
as part of a call for projects launched by the Luxembourg government for the production of electricity from solar energy
ArcelorMittal and energy operator Enovos decided to join forces to carry out the first project of its kind in the Grand Duchy
A contract was signed between the two partners under the terms of which ArcelorMittal would make its Differdange industrial basin available to Enovos

It's been 55 years since the first group of Miami students set sail for Luxembourg
a country that could easily be the setting for a Disney fairy tale
and clean streets lined with art and culture could be the place Belle longed to be in “Beauty and the Beast.”
It is the only Grand Duchy in Europe and a center of international diplomacy
serving as the crossroads to several major European cultures
The country is an intersection for multiculturalism
where residents speak multiple languages such as Luxembourgish
we witness hundreds of Miami students embark on a remarkable journey to Luxembourg,” Miami University Provost Elizabeth Mullenix said
“The John Dolibois European Center (MUDEC) becomes their academic home away from home
The center is a testament to Miami’s deep commitment to educational excellence and a reflection of the transformative power of international experiences.”
more than 13,000 Miami students have studied in Luxembourg
more than 150 students are taking classes at MUDEC or completing an internship in Luxembourg City.
“The significance of MUDEC lies not just in the courses taken or the academic credits earned but in the transformation that occurs within each student," Mullenix said
these students immerse themselves in the cultures
They learn not just from their professors but from the vibrant communities they become a part of.”
which has had three previous locations in Luxembourg
recently marked its 25th anniversary in the Chateau de Differdange
which is located in the city of Differdange in the south-western region of Luxembourg
The Chateau has classrooms and study spaces for students
Miami’s educational objectives continue to flourish in Luxembourg and have a profound impact on students
said that the Luxembourg program was a really big part of her choosing Miami
“It was really important to my parents that I study abroad,” Showalter said
“They were really pushing for me to study abroad from the day that I began looking at colleges
Miami having a program in Luxembourg was very much a big draw for them because of how accessible the program was
They liked that it is a central location and I would be able to see the world as much as I could.”
Showalter has an internship at ARA City Radio station in Luxembourg City
a nonprofit community radio station that aims to inform and entertain Luxembourg’s growing international community.
Showalter said being in Luxembourg has encouraged her to be more outgoing and communicative
“I want to work in entertainment law,” she said
“So it’s really cool to be on the other side of that industry where I can be the entertainer rather than the attorney and just see legally how that radio station works.”
Luxembourg offers free public transportation
which allows students to easily travel to internships and around Luxembourg
Miami has also expanded its housing options for students by recently acquiring space in the Gravity Differdange
which are within walking distance of the Chateau
has always had a fascination with traveling
“It’s something that I always wanted to do as a kid,” Madison said
“…I used to collect maps just dreaming of traveling the world.”
Since beginning his study abroad in Luxembourg
He is especially excited to be traveling to Venice and visiting the Venice Biennale through his Luxembourg 101 course
which helps students get acclimated to Luxembourg and traveling abroad
has always interacted with diverse communities; however
he says this study abroad experience opened his eyes to another version of life
“Coming here made me realize that opportunities do not end at the borders,” Madison said
there’s an entire world and professions and lives that I can live in other places
And so it really feels like the doors have been opened
I’m able to see that with my own eyes.”
Nearly 150 alumni traveled to Luxembourg to commemorate the 55th anniversary
Chris ’97 and Jana Holland ’98 were especially excited to return to Luxembourg for the celebrations because of their son Joey Holland
a Business Economics major from Columbus who is currently studying at MUDEC
“So I was here back in fall of ‘95 and I haven’t been back since,” Jana Holland said
“It’s so just special to be back for the anniversary and also because our son Joey is studying here
The timing just came together and worked out so well for us.”
Chris Holland studied in Luxembourg during the 1994-95 academic year
This is also his first time coming back to Luxembourg
He said it was great just seeing the city and walking across the bridge
“We were here when the campus was just in the middle of the city," he said
“so to be able to see the Chateau for the first time was just amazing.”
Although Chris Holland and Jana Holland didn't study at MUDEC at the same time
“We both had a summer job and he had like three jobs before he was leaving for a year in Luxembourg
and the only reason I wanted to talk to him at the training of one of the jobs was because he was going to Luxembourg,” Jana Holland said
so that’s how we met and that's how we started talking
We just feel like Luxembourg is a huge part of our story.”
Aside from connecting him with his future wife
Chris Holland’s Luxembourg experience has had an impact on his career
He believes that his study abroad experience
and environments prepared him for his current role
we’ve done some mergers and acquisitions where I have traveled all over the world — into Brussels
into Tokyo — and I was the one that they wanted to send and just because I was able to interact with a lot of the other companies on a better level,” Chris Holland said
“I was like an ambassador of our company as we acquired new companies.”
Rollin Seward ‘80 was told that he was only the second Black male student to study at MUDEC when he came to Luxembourg during the 1978-79 academic year
emphasis was placed on getting study abroad experience
broadened my perspective,” Seward said
They had a brother who was like 19 and one that was 9 — my Luxembourg brothers
so I went to all the Communion stuff.”
“I was here for a year-round program
so we had a lot of faculty sponsored trips
I went to Russia right before the 1980 Olympics,” he said
and the lands that were formerly Yugoslavia
Although the diversity in Luxembourg wasn't what it is today
Seward said he had a really good experience
He returned to Luxembourg 30 years ago to visit his host family and said returning for the 55th anniversary has been wonderful
“I really like the diversity now and I do like the high- tech transportation system they have here
and still the core of the city is still the same,” Seward said
“I love the beautiful core … the valleys and the parks and the bridges
Kristine Nau Dowd was a student at Ohio State University when she studied at MUDEC during fall 1997
She was a part of the first cohort of students to take classes at the Chateau
Dowd said what impacted her most about studying at MUDEC was that it empowered her to venture out as a young 20-year-old who had never been abroad
“It allowed me the security to venture out into different cultures knowing that I have a safe
secure place to come back to,” Dowd said
the knowledge and education that was provided by my classmates and by the local community
my host family and the professors continued to build my self confidence and really gave me the spirit that eventually transcended into my life today as a mom and as a wife.”
Matt Osborne ’94 was the student activities coordinator who helped MUDEC transition into the Chateau de Differdange 25 years ago
He was instrumental in getting the Chateau changed from a 15th-century chateau to a 21st-century university
“I was overseeing a group of French electricians and Portuguese masons,” Osborne said
and every morning I’d open the doors and they would come in and they would do their things
It’s amazing now to see how incredible this place is.”
Osborne and his wife lived in one of the studios in the Chateau during his time as a coordinator
“I was joking that our first house as a married couple was a 15th-century chateau," he said
Osborne was a MUDEC student in 1992-93 when it was located on Avenue Monterey
It has been 16 years since he’s been back to the Chateau
and it was an experience of absolute nostalgia
“The chateau was amazing when I was here as a coordinator
“It is light years ahead of that now.”
assistant director for Miami in Luxembourg
uses her experience as a MUDEC student to guide current MUDEC students
and traveling abroad felt like a fairy tale
she realized she could do incredible things
as well as pushing myself outside my comfort zone,” Miller said
“MUDEC changed me in such a profound way
she knew she wanted to travel and have a job that had an international or global component
“My career path wound around and led me back to Miami where I get to celebrate my alma mater and work with the next generation of MUDEC students,” she said
Miller sees herself as a resource for students because she has been in their shoes and knows how they are feeling
“I’m always happy to be a resource to them for any questions or concerns they have since I have gone through the program and know that I can provide perspective that may make their experience even better,” Miller said
“I am excited to see them go on this journey with their own goals and experiences
and return back to Oxford excited to share their stories.”
and Health professor Mark Walsh is teaching two courses in Luxembourg this semester: Physics in Sport and Sports Nutrition
It’s important to him that students have an opportunity to study abroad and see the rest of the world while progressing towards their degree
Walsh studied abroad in Germany when he was in college
“I think there’s data out there that shows now if you’re culturally fluent
to interact with people from different cultures
and that you may be better off later on,” Walsh said
“I’m not sure how hard that data is
I think there’s always this conventional wisdom that is a good thing.”
Walsh is leading one of the week-long study tours
taking students to Germany to a sport university that is also an Olympic training center
Taking advantage of the free transportation
he also takes students exploring on the train and has even taken a trail that leads all the way to France
“We’ve walked or biked to France four times since we’ve been here,” he said
He believes the faculty benefits of teaching abroad are just as great as the student benefits
and so it’s kind of a “you get to know your students a little better here,” which is probably a good thing,” Walsh said
“I think it's good for all of us.”
Luxembourg police arrested an individual subject to a European arrest warrant
The incident occurred on Rue Michel Rodange
where officers encountered a group of people attempting to avoid their attention
the patrol decided to conduct a check after noticing the group's evasive behaviour
immobilising them before conducting a body search
The search led to the confiscation of cash and several drug pellets
authorities confirmed that one of the detained individuals was the subject of an active European arrest warrant
The suspect is scheduled to appear before an examining magistrate on Thursday afternoon
Brugnoni is best known as director of the 1535° Creative Hub in Differdange, a post she has held since 2013. She also has 17 years’ experience as an independent restorer and curator and worked as a cultural coordinator for the town of Differdange.

The steel plant has spent €1.7 million, about €500,000 of that covered by the Luxembourg state, to move a waste deposit collection area from near Differdange homes to a previously unused building close to the plant’s metal-melting furnace, ArcelorMittal said.
The factory’s pit collected black slag, the main by-product of making steel by melting scrap metal in electric arc furnaces. It is treated and stored until it can be sold to other industrial users, for example in road construction, the company said.
The transfer has cut the noise and amount of dust pushed into the air during the dumping work, the company said. Employees are also safer, since liquid slag can explode when it hits pockets of water left by rain or snow, the company said.

Just over a fortnight ahead of Cliftonville making their return to European action
our latest continental retrospective steps back eight years to a memorable victory on the UEFA stage
For it was on this day in 2016 that the Reds overcame Differdange in a Europa League first qualifying round clash that was notable for a Club goalscoring milestone
A week on from conceding a late leveller in the first leg at Stade Municipal de la Ville
Differdange boss Pascal Carzaniga tempted fate by suggesting he wouldn’t be concerned if his side shipped an early goal at Solitude so long as they were ahead come the close of play – and was duly left cursing his words when Davy McDaid put the Reds in front with just two minutes on the clock
The second-half dismissal of Luxembourgers’ defender Tom Siebenaler handed Cliftonville a numerical advantage they made the most of when Jay Donnelly converted a Chris Curran cut-back to make it 2-0 – the first time the Reds had ever scored more than once in a European game
In addition to the victory over Differdange
today also marks the anniversary of three prior European engagements
the Reds suffered a 2-0 loss to Belgium’s KAA Gent in the first leg of an Intertoto Cup second round showdown at the now-demolished Jules Ottenstadion where
despite going close through a long-range David McAlinden free-kick
Cliftonville were undone by two goals from former Ireland international Dominic Foley
The fixture ended in controversy when Declan O’Hara and Christophe Gregoire were both shown straight red cards following a confrontation on the touchline
only for the Club to successfully appeal against any suspension for the defender when video footage exonerated O’Hara of any wrongdoing
Cliftonville suffered a painful Europa League exit when The New Saints somehow held on to earn a 2-1 aggregate success at Solitude
the Welsh representatives stood firm against at times incessant home pressure and
Ruaidhri Donnelly and Joe Gormley all hitting the crossbar during a pulsating second-half
the Reds were left wondering what might have been as TNS progressed to tackle FC Midtjylland of Denmark in the second qualifying round
July 7 saw Cliftonville lock horns with DAC in a UEFA Conference League first qualifying round first leg at MOL Arena in Slovakia
Trailing to a Rego Szantho strike on 25 minutes
the visitors instantly hit back when Ronan Hale marked his debut with an unorthodox finish to level matters
Nikola Krstovic restored DAC’s advantage in the second period and
despite having Brahim Moumou dismissed with eight minutes left on the clock

Last season’s BGL Ligue champions FC Differdange kicked off their first-ever Champions League campaign with a loss in the Faroe Islands against Klaksvík in disappointing fashion last week
and the pattern continued: a combined 46 shots attempted over the two legs brought no success
while KÍ scored two from only nine attempts
A vastly improved attack spearheaded by Federico Andrada came close to threatening Klaksvík’s aggregate lead on Wednesday night
but the finishes were often wayward and the shooting positions naïve
FCD’s domination with the ball meant little
and the players often seemed desperate to score upon entering the final third of the pitch
Left wing-back Rychelmy was a shadow of Lucas Pruzzo’s calm presence with the ball at his feet
which makes replacing the departing Argentinian one of the most important tasks for Pedro Resende before the BGL Ligue start
Árni Frederiksberg’s brace separated the teams in the tie
and Klaksvík eventually gained qualification to the tournament’s second round
will have the arduous task of flying to Kazakhstan on the agenda
as local champions Ordabasy Shymkent await in the Europa Conference League qualifiers
The substantial amount of travelling coupled with a few nights’ stay in or near Shymkent makes the next step financially challenging for Differdange
if the squad can shake off the jetlag in their second leg on 1 August
Differdange will be joined by two other sides from the Grand Duchy in Progrès Niederkorn and F91 Dudelange
While Niederkorn qualifies automatically after their Luxembourgish Cup victory
Dudelange and Strassen also had the opportunity to progress to that stage on Thursday
F91 faced Andorran Atlétic Escaldes from a one-goal aggregate lead
while UNA Strassen travelled to Kuopio after a heroic 0-0 last week
Strassen’s fortunes unfolded early on as a quick brace from 18-year-old midfielder Otto Ruoppi
There was no coming back for an aggressive and daring UNA in the second half either
as three further goals punished their lack of adept defensive cover in the latter stages of the game
their first-leg performance was admirable and will live long in the players’ memory
the lack of accuracy and sharpness with the ball cost them dearly
The opposite can be said about F91 Dudelange at Stade Jos Nosbaum
Their 1-0 victory last week was achieved by a calamitous free kick that caught the goalkeeper off-guard and bounced into the bottom long corner
Most of the possession was with the Andorrans
who could easily have won by several goals if only their attacks were finished as surgically as they had been built up
Dudelange enjoyed a stellar defensive performance
which proved a fruitful and solid foundation to a more free-flowing
combinative attacking display than last time out
The fact Marco Martino and his coaching staff had a week to analyse and prepare for Atlétic’s vulnerabilities was also apparent from the start
A tweaked line-up suffocated Atlétic Escaldes
especially in the second half after their initial
more pragmatic approach looked to be just enough to secure a draw
once Atlétic were in a position to initiate attacks and fight for their lives
Martino’s F91 was primed to take all risks and grab every opportunity to end the contest and progress to the next round
That target was accomplished by a cool-headed Samir Hadji penalty in the 60th minute
and another close-range finish from the Moroccan after a perfectly organised pressing scheme shortly afterwards
Dudelange’s 3-0 win on aggregate emphasises the difference both in technical quality and mental resilience between the two sides
Atlétic crumbled in the two most important points of the tie: last week
and now again at 0-0 with all possibilities still looking open
F91 were able to found another gear in those situations
tipping the scales on their side just when it was needed the most
from 7pm CEST (Central European Summer Time)
Progrès and F91 will occupy the same time slot against two Swedish opponents: the Wasps will play Djurgården in Stockholm
while Stade Jos Nosbaum will host F91 Dudelange vs BK Häcken
UNA Strassen have been eliminated from European competitions altogether
ArcelorMittal said a noise and air pollution reduction project
will contribute to greater safety for employees and improved logistical efficiency at its steelworks in Differdange
Following the announcement in January of the installation of a "super vacuum" at the Differdange site
ArcelorMittal is continuing its efforts to improve air quality by relocating its liquid slag pits
This redevelopment should also reduce noise pollution and improve employee safety
ArcelorMittal has announced a new project to improve air quality in Differdange
After announcing at the beginning of the year that it was installing --an investment worth €17.6 million--the steelmaker said on Wednesday 28 August that it had moved its liquid slag pits
Liquid slag is the molten residue produced during the metallurgical process
in particular when ores are smelted to extract steel
The material is treated and temporarily stored before being recovered and recycled by specialised companies
This investment "illustrates the group's desire to answer the expectations of its neighbors and employees."
the pits are now installed in a hall that was previously unused
Other improvements included the creation of a new road
and the installation of cladding to insulate the building
"All without stopping production"
the steel giant boasted in its press release
This redevelopment should help to reduce noise pollution for local residents living close to the site
This is largely caused by the pouring of slag
“Noise pollution has also been reduced by 7 decibels
with the structure of the hall being an acoustic barrier
preventing the propagation of noise related to slag processing,” the company said
""The rehabilitation of the hall took place in parallel with another major environmental project already known: the new dust removal system,” Pierre Jacobs
CEO of ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg
“These two joint initiatives confirm ArcelorMittal's commitment to the environment and to a better quality of life for the neighbours of our facilities
These targeted investments offering innovative tailor-made solutions demonstrate our desire to take into account the expectations of our stakeholders
in the conduct of our industrial activities.”
While the project does have an environmental objective
particularly in view of the risk of explosion when liquid slag comes into contact with pockets of water
“and the immediate proximity of the hall to the steelworks exit has made it possible to optimize the route of slag transport vehicles
They now circulate in a limited and protected area
with the least co-activity and without crossing other vehicles,” the press release stated
“This new configuration not only improves safety but also the logistical efficiency of operations

In the initial phase of the police locale project, launched in July, 20 additional police officers were deployed on the streets in Luxembourg City and four in Esch, under the ultimate responsibility of the respective mayors.
“Thanks to the local police unit, 1,650 additional checks were carried out, which would not have been carried out otherwise,” Gloden said at a press conference on Wednesday, at which the minister, mayors and head of the country’s police reviewed the scheme.
Gloden said that he wanted the project to apply the principle of the “four Ps” - more staff, more presence, more proximity, and more prevention - in order to instil a “better sense of security among the population”.The aim is for the local police units to be enshrined in law, Gloden said, amid additional recruitment efforts, adding that his ministry is currently working on a bill which would table amendments to current legislation governing the police.
Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer, who said that “the establishment of a local police force has been a long-standing demand of the City of Luxembourg in the face of a resurgence in crime”, said she was “in favour of expanding the project” in order to make the city safer. Esch-sur-Alzette Mayor Christian Weis, for his part, said he was “delighted to see this project made sustainable”.
has become the latest municipality to apply to join the scheme
“It meets the criteria to be integrated,” said the minister
said that municipalities had to meet certain criteria to be eligible for the pilot project
including that local police officers be deployed in places with high traffic or in places with recurring problems of public order and antisocial behaviour
Peters encouraged other municipalities to put themselves forward
“so that we can assess their needs together.”

After a disappointing double-header against Klaksvík
Differdange were drawn against one of the trickiest opponents in the Conference League in Ordabasy Shymkent
a team located roughly 3,000 miles from western Luxembourg
Logistics were always going to be an issue for the team financially
but the most the players could contribute to their team’s success was securing an impressive result in the first leg at home
to gain extra revenue from UEFA and retain the chance of progressing ro Round 3 of the qualifiers
A cagey affair brought no real highlights until the 37th minute
when Diogo Silva’s shot rattled against the crossbar
Last season’s BGL Ligue top scorer Jorginho was the quickest to reach the rebound
The teams were well-matched for the rest of the half
and the Kazakhs threatened the Luxembourgish goal several times
with neither team imposing their dominance on the other
The second half was about defending the lead and picking the moments to extend it from Differdange’s point of view
cautious approach suited Pedro Resende’s crew more favourably than the braver
faster attacking football shown against Klaksvík
and FCD never really lost their grasp on the game
Resende even tried bringing on some attackers from his bench in new signings Andreas Buch and Gustavo
and although the pair didn’t turn many heads with their displays
these coaching decisions were the sign of confidence and composure in the lead
Their reward was a 1-0 win in the first leg
which will be fundamental to keep their chances of surviving a tacky encounter in Central Asia as they embark on their journey towards the Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan border in the coming days
Thursday provided two more challenging match-ups for the other Luxmebourgish teams still in the competition
Stade Jos Nosbaum hosted BK Häcken from Sweden
while their countrymen in Djurgården faced Progrès Niederkorn over in Stockholm
The crowd in Dudelange were left with mixed feelings after a highly entertaining clash culminated in a 6-2 thrashing which all but ended F91’s hopes of going through
Samir Hadji’s first-hald brace from two penalties reduced the deficit to one goal shortly before the end of the first-half
but the Swedes’ devastating counter-attacks were left unanswered by Marco Martino and his staff
as the goals kept coming and the hole was deeper and deeper
Dudelange tried to climb back and get themselves in a slightly less fatal position ahead of the game in Sweden
Their efforts brought no success despite an unrelenting approach in attack and admirable bravery with the ball
Häcken’s agile attackers punished F91’s naivety time and again
scoring from six of their seven shots on target
Progrès fared somewhat better against Djurgården at the other game
protecting the 0-0 scoreline for 21 minutes
The lead was doubled merely six minutes later by a goal from Turkish striker Deniz Hümmet
who proceeded to score the third and final goal of the night on the hour mark
Despite a result that might seem like a battering
Niederkorn had more than twice as many shots as their opponents (7 vs 16) and also produced more shots on target (3 vs 4)
The lack of any end product was also down to the departure of elite striker Walid Jarmouni to Albania
was deemed unfit to play the whole 90 minutes
and second-choice option Antoine Mazure failed to make his mark on the game at this showpiece occasion
after a defeat in similar circumstances against Midtjylland
Progrès were able to bounce back in Luxembourg and took the game to the Danish giants
making a push for a shock win before they lost in extra time
their situation looks considerably bleaker given the three-goal gap and the fact Djurgården are in peak match sharpness
as the Swedish league is well underway in contrast to the Luxembourgish one (or the Danish league last year
having a team in the Conference League’s third qualifying round is a step in the right direction from Luxembourg
While it may take a miracle to see either of F91 or Niederkorn progress
attacking mindsets and the fact a little bit of luck in front of goal could have turned both ties on their heads
Dudelange will play the second leg of their tie on Wednesday from 19:00
while the other two teams can make their claims for a place in Round 3 on Thursday afternoon (Ordabasy vs Differdange: 17:00
ShareAn investigating judge has decided not to charge former déi Gréng Environment Minister Carole Dieschbourg over the authorisation she granted to party colleague and then-Differdange mayor Roberto Traversini to upgrade a garden shed.
The public prosecutor's office in a press release on Friday morning said it would drop the charges against both former politicians over the granting of the garden shed permit.
However, Traversini is still under investigation on other charges linked to the works that were carried out on the property in Niederkorn.
“The judiciary has finally been convinced of Carole Dieschbourg’s innocence
which she has maintained throughout the proceedings,” law firm Turk&Prum
said in a statement following Friday’s ruling
Dieschbourg had resigned from government in April 2022 after the public prosecutor’s office asked parliament to lift her immunity so it could conduct the investigation
Traversini stepped down as mayor of Differdange in September 2019 after admitting that he had failed to submit a planning permit for converting a garden shed at a Niederkorn house that he had inherited
The shed was located in a so-called Natura 2000 zone
though Traversini claimed he was unware that it was in a protected zone
He had also used the commune’s construction department to draw up a floor plan for the garden shed
Work carried out on the property was done by a local employment initiative
He faces a list of potential charges including the misappropriation of public funds
and the violation and subsequent concealment of the law governing municipal institutions

the Lycée Privé Emile Metz (LPEM) has expanded its presence in Luxembourg with a second location in Differdange
complementing its existing campus in Dommeldange
with a newly constructed complex added to the existing building
Although the facility is already partially operational
its official inauguration is scheduled for 26 February
around 100 students are enrolled at the Differdange campus
all of whom are pursuing vocational training
Introduction Video:Meet Luxembourg's English Schools: Lycée Privé Emile Metz
the school will broaden its offerings to include first-year classes in general secondary education (7ème Générale)
This expansion is expected to double the student population
with the Differdange campus having a total capacity of up to 400 students
In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Télé
LPEM Headmaster Pascal Thill emphasised the significance of this development
Luxembourg's third-largest city with over 30,000 residents
currently lacks a secondary school offering general secondary education
Thill explained that LPEM aims to fill this gap by providing an option for students from Differdange and surrounding areas who wish to pursue this educational path
He also highlighted the school's commitment to smaller class sizes and a personalised approach to learning
the school will host an open day at both its Differdange and Dommeldange campuses
The question of the week was arguably who could gain the upper hand at a heated
and much-awaited derby between last season’s champions
built around last season’s top scorer Jorginho and sought-after French creator Guillaume Trani was successfully contained by the visitors
FCD were kept at bay for the majority of the game
although Niederkorn themselves had a quiet day in front of their opponents’ goal as a result
The breakthrough came after a corner (one of the rare instances when marking Trani – the taker – was not a straightforward solution)
which found Brazilian holding midfielder Leandro around the six-yard box
His first goal in a Differdange shirt could not have come at a much better time
as his shot proved the difference between two incredibly organised and well-prepared sides
The result means FCD have been able to keep five clean sheets in a row
and have still not conceded a single goal in the current edition of the competition
having also enjoyed a perfect start until the recent derby
can head into the break in joint-second place
alongside Swift Hesperange and F91 Dudelange who have also only suffered one loss each this campaign
A morale-boosting 5-1 victory against Rodange 91 meant the world for the Angry Goats
who started the year unremarkably and seemed destined to repeat their bottom-half finish of last season after the first four rounds
all of their newest assets showed how shrewd their signings were by the club’s staff
while Yann Godart also started his account for the club after finding the net in the second half
Khairane’s purchase from the Swedish lower leagues is especially eye-catching
but so is the fact they could lure Marseille academy graduate
the most memorable performance of all undeniably belongs to fellow new recruit Stefan Lopes
The former Käerjéng and Strassen winger was brought onto the pitch 89 minutes in
his side seemingly coasting towards a 3-1 win without ever breaking a sweat
and a goal in the first minute of stoppage time
before an assist to Loris Tinelli’s goal three minutes later
and the most influential player of the day might as well have been the last substitute this time
Mondorf’s only win before the Rodange game was a meagre 2-1 against lowly Bettembourg
before they fell to consecutive defeats against Rosport and Differdange in the last two weeks
That short slump has all but ended for USM
but whether they can sustain their strong showings after the international break is still an open question
As the whole squad can train together while some other clubs lose players to national team commitments
there is every reason to believe Mondorf will continue precisely where they had left off once they return to the pitch on 15 September against Wiltz 71 at the Stade John Grün
New manager Emmanuel da Costa had a lot on his in-tray when he arrived at the helm in Holleschbierg in the middle of pre-season
Some players came and went against his will
others turned out to be beyond the financial muscle of the club and thus had to be released mere weeks after they arrived
while others never really got a chance to show themselves in the flesh due to the bloated squad da Costa inherited – before trimming it to a still outrageous 35 players
Regardless of the disappointing results at friendly games and a less-than-ideal adaptation period for the French head coach in the summer
Hesper started the season almost as steadily as they did in their triumphant 2022/23 campaign
Leader and captain Dominik Stolz seems to have rediscovered his mojo after a tumultuous last year
and netted five times in the opening four fixtures (only bettered by Hostert winger Kenan Avdusinović)
their first slip came in unbelievable fashion
The work of the previous two months practically blew up in Swift’s faces after a disappointing
and rather embarrassing 3-0 loss to newly-promoted Bettembourg
who collected their first points in the league with their glorious home result
Their early-season form indicated the need for a sharp turn in SCB’s fortunes
and manager Olivier Baudry took to public with his intention to motivate the team for future games
after a perceived overconfidence and complacency plaguing their first season after their Éierepromotioun league title in May
The players answered their boss’ rallying cries
and did so emphatically: with 17 minutes on the clock
Their win was never in doubt for the remainder of the game either
attacking approach finally paid off against a definitively stronger opponent
Bettembourg returned to the National Division after 51 years of absence
and many feared that their current streak will also be short-lived
but as long as they can keep their heads down and realistically set their ambitions and goals for the year
there might still be a way they can stay away from relegation trouble
their loss deprived them of a joint-first position for now
which is absolutely no travesty at such an early stage
some individual performances will surely give da Costa some selection headaches when BGL Ligue football resumes for the team against Victoria Rosport
The international break also means that the Luxembourgish senior national team
will both test themselves competitively in the upcoming period
Luc Holtz’s Red Lions will face Northern Ireland in Belfast on Thursday 5 September
