ShareProduction at the Liberty Steel plant in Dudelange could soon resume again, with prospective buyers, among them Turkey’s largest steel company, reportedly expressing an interest in the site.Trade union representatives confirmed toVirgule and Luxemburger Wort - sister publications of the Luxembourg Times - on Thursday that a buyer has been found for the plant.
However, unions stressed that a final deal is yet to be agreed, and that more details are expected next week. Interested parties had until 14 February to submit their offer to purchase the plant.
The official announcement is now in the hands of the insolvency administrator. However, the deputy general secretary of the LCGB union, Robert Fornieri, told Virgule: “According to my information, a declaration of registration has been submitted by the Turkish group Tosyali Holding.”
According to the LCGB representative, numerous buyers expressed interest in taking over the plant. In the end, two candidates remained, including the Turkish group.
Tosyali has been active for 70 years. The company says it has almost 40 plants and around 15,000 employees on three continents. Tosyali produces almost ten million tonnes of steel and iron every year, making it the largest steel producer in Turkey.
What happens nextThe Ministry of the Economy must give its green light for the deal to go ahead
“It will also be possible for us to meet and discuss with them from this point onwards and negotiate accompanying social measures and the transition to a plan to maintain employment,” said Fornieri
The sale process and transfer will still take some time from an administrative point of view
Fornieri says - estimating a possible likely timeframe of mid-April
the LCGB favours a “plan to maintain employment in order to create a transition to the resumption of activity”
“We also need to know the business plan of this new player
We don’t currently know the details of their project or investment plan,” added Fornieri
Around 140 people are still employed at the site

Enerdeal will install a 2 MWP solar carport for Husky Technologies in Dudelange, allowing the manufacturer to produce green electricity on site and reduce its carbon footprint.
The industrial group Husky Technologies has just signed a 20-year contract with Enerdeal for the construction of a 2 MWP solar carport in Dudelange. A supplier of renewable energy solutions operating notably in Belgium and Luxembourg, Enerdeal has been integrated into the EDP Group--an expert in decentralised solar production--since 2023.
A solar carport is a structure that involves installing solar panels on the roof covering a car park, enabling the production of clean energy. In Husky’s case, more than 4,000 panels will be installed, allowing the company to directly consume the electricity produced, thus supporting its sustainable development objectives.
Financed and operated by Enerdeal under a “solar-as-a-service” model, the project allows Husky to benefit from green electricity without mobilising capital. The supplier takes care of everything: initial investment, installation, operation and maintenance throughout the duration of the contract. The profits generated will then be shared between the two parties.
“The solar-as-a-service financing model allows our customers to quickly deploy renewable energy solutions, thus meeting profitability and sustainability objectives,” emphasises Enerdeal country manager François Neu.
The carport is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. It will avoid the annual emission of approximately 926 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 500 households. The project also complies with increasingly stringent regulatory requirements for sustainable energy in the industrial sector.
“Integrating renewable energy solutions is a key step in reducing our carbon footprint,” says Husky CEO Brad Selleck. “This solar carport project is part of our long-term vision of environmental responsibility and energy efficiency.”
With this project, Enerdeal has installed nearly 300 MWP of industrial solar energy in Luxembourg and Belgium.

The Bettembourg-Dudelange intermodal terminal is continuing its investment plan in favour of sustainable energy
This change began with the installation of the 3rd portal crane at the intermodal terminal
The next stage involves replacing thermal tractors with MOL electric tractors (model: YME 225)
This initiative makes a significant contribution to the electrification of our activities and the reduction of the carbon footprint at the Bettembourg-Dudelange terminal
CINEA and CFL terminals in partnership with CFL multimodal signed a co-financing agreement for the PULSE investment project (capacity
A grant has been awarded by the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme for the modernisation of the Bettembourg- Dudelange intermodal terminal
the intermodal terminal has been operating four MOL electric tractors
the intermodal terminal expects to reduce diesel consumption from 144,770 litres in 2022 to around 30,000 litres in 2025
from 449 tonnes in 2022 to around 90 tonnes in 2025
In addition to their environmental benefits
these new electric tractors offer other advantages
including a significant reduction in noise and vibrations
which means less noise pollution in the vicinity of the terminal
a smooth transition from one gear to another without jerking
improved driving conditions for the operational team
and technological advances that allow the machines to be remotely diagnosed and reprogrammed
thereby considerably reducing the need for technicians to visit and work on site
The new tractors are also equipped with smart tablets connected to the 5G network
representing a major technological advance
These tablets are particularly useful for the operational team
who can now not only better anticipate orders thanks to these devices
All these benefits contribute not only to improved working conditions for operators
but also to a reduced environmental impact and a better working environment
“With the introduction of our new electric tractors
we are taking a decisive step towards a sustainable energy transition
while reducing our carbon footprint and modernising our operations
We still have one last step to take to fully decarbonise our operations

Gledis Kryeziu has been running the café-restaurant De Good Fellow opposite the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville in Dudelange since summer 2023. Kryeziu, who arrived with his parents and sister from Albania in 2003, tells the story of his career and talks about his attachment to and commitment to his city.

In the summer of 2023, Kryeziu opened De Good Fellow, a bar-restaurant located at 1 Rue de la Libération, opposite the Hôtel de Ville, after several months of renovation work “that we did ourselves, practically. We should be finishing the kitchen in the next few weeks and opening the restaurant at the end of January/beginning of February,” explains the man who is also president of the Fédération des commerçants et artisans de Dudelange.
A graduate in sociology and politics from Mannheim, the Dudelange native launched his first family business: the Babas Fudtrak foodtruck--Baba being the nickname of his father, Vildan--a few months before the pandemic. “The second stage was a physical business. We still have the van, but we stopped the business.” For the record, Kryeziu “hired” his father as an employee. His mum and brothers also help out regularly.

Ernster currently has bookshops in Bertrange, Bascharage, Ettelbruck, Luxembourg City and Mersch. Archive photo: Romain Gamba
The Ernster bookstore will open its 11th shop in Luxembourg in Dudelange this summer.
“We are excited to announce the opening of our Librairie Ernster in the heart of Dudelange!” CFO Paul Ernster wrote on Linkedin on 28 March. Already present with 10 stores in Bertrange, Bascharage, Ettelbruck, Luxembourg City and Mersch, Ernster will soon be setting up in Dudelange. Its 11th shop is due to open at 48-52 Avenue G.-D. Charlotte in July 2025, where the Formula Sports store was formerly located.
“Welcoming this bookstore, with its history, enthusiasm and family culture, represents a real turning point for the city of Dudelange, both for the vibrancy of its local businesses and for the cultural life of its city,” mayor (LSAP) and the college of aldermen said in a press release. “The presence of such a bookstore in Dudelange further anchors the importance it has always attached to culture and its diversity.”
According to the Luxembourg business register, Ernster employed 99 people at the end of 2023.
Between the demographic and economic renewal of the city and the renewal of the party, Dudelange mayor Dan Biancalana (LSAP) is working on two levels. With a determination to be constructive, he says. Photo: Nader Ghavami
Dan Biancalana has a lot on his plate. As Dudelange’s mayor, he’s working to diversify the city’s economy by making full use of its role as a regional hub; as LSAP vice-chairman, he’s working to rejuvenate the party and its vision in preparation for a return to office.
(To our readers: Paperjam’s editorial team spent Thursday and Friday in Dudelange, meeting the political, social and economic players in this municipality of 22,000 inhabitants. This article is part of that “concentrated” approach. We hope you enjoy reading these articles.)
As mayor of Dudelange, (LSAP) is working full time with his departments on the economic diversification of the city and intends to take full advantage of the regional vocation of his municipality to try to attract both new state services and new economic activities. The and the --two events he deplores--should not overshadow the town’s dynamism, he insists.
The regional branch of Adem? “We defended it tooth and nail within the local council,” explains the mayor. “Dudelange’s vocation is to be a centre for regional development. We have, for example, a regional cultural centre, a regional library, a regional music school and a branch of the national health fund. To take Adem away from us is to deprive ourselves of one of the pillars of this vocation. It would mean sacrificing all the collaborations and synergies we had put in place.”
Biancalana also intends to take advantage of existing infrastructures such as the National Health Laboratory and the research activities that go with it, or the CFL multimodal hub. “Our challenge is to connect the city with government services and also with businesses. We need to bring all these players together so that they can take advantage of the municipal services that we offer as a city--trade, gastronomy, public and municipal services, leisure activities.”
Against this backdrop, the closure of Liberty Steel has left a bitter taste in his mouth. “We can only regret that all the promises that were made in terms of development and investment have not been kept. The site’s potential has not been exploited. The country has lost all its specific knowhow and production.”
But this “human tragedy” should not obscure the fact that Dudelange is an industrial town. As a regional hub, the municipality--in partnership with the state--is seeing its business parks develop. “Industry remains an important pillar for the town. We have ongoing discussions with the players--Ampacet, Eurofoil and others--to find out about their concerns and seek solutions.”
This desire for economic diversification is also reflected in the town’s commercial policy. In Dudelange, the percentage of empty commercial premises is 6%, compared with 11% nationally. The town has set up a city manager and, faced with empty commercial units, is taking the initiative of renting them out itself so that they can be sublet, mainly to innovative activities or to fill gaps in the commercial offer. “A long-term initiative that is beginning to bear fruit.”
The fact that the population of Dudelange has strong purchasing power helps.
The population of Dudelange is made up of 60% Luxembourgers and 40% foreigners. These are mainly Portuguese, French, Italian and Belgian nationals. And the town is attracting more and more English speakers. “What sets Dudelange apart is its balanced mix of socio-professional categories. There are few major disparities, which strengthens the social cohesion of the population.”
The question of political representativeness in Luxembourg is a subject close to the heart of Biancalana, a politician of national stature. For the past two and a half years he has been vice-president of the LSAP with .

Gabriel Mjahed has chosen Dudelange to open his first permanent shop

(To our readers: the Paperjam editorial team was in Dudelange on Thursday and Friday to meet the political

This article is part of that ‘concentrated’ approach
It’s been just over a year since Gabriel Mjahed
the young chocolatier is gradually developing his brand thanks to his authenticity and passionate approach to his craft
he was not destined to follow the beaten track
“I’m not someone who’s going to study or read
he discovered chocolate-making and became fascinated by the subject
which he found “very pleasant to work with.” His curiosity and desire to go beyond traditional techniques led him to travel all over France and as far afield as Mexico
where he worked for six months on cocoa plantations
from the farmer who harvests the fruit to the processing of the finished product.” It was there that he realised that to fully master his art
you have to understand cocoa from bean to bar
it was Luxembourg that finally became Mjahed’s home port in 2020
following a job offer from the chocolate maker Genaveh
But his entrepreneurial spirit and need for freedom soon became apparent
as he had no money to rent permanent premises
The young craftsman eventually found a location in the “Forge du Sud,” where he has had his shop since January 2024
RG Chocolaterie stands out for the quality of its products
The master chocolatier favours simple ingredients
At the source of his art are meticulously selected cocoa beans
“We’ve built up a relationship [with the producers]
It’s an approach that goes beyond the simple quest for taste

particularly when it comes to the delicate issue of child labour
the entrepreneur also seeks to tell a story through his creations
he has developed made-to-measure moulds for his creations
giving his chocolate factory a unique visual identity
These initiatives and this authenticity are particularly appreciated by his customers
who also value his personalised approach and the opportunity to taste his new products when they visit the shop
Mjahed has his feet firmly on the ground in the face of the challenges that lie ahead
Rising cocoa prices and competition from large companies remain major obstacles
he has set his sights on expanding his range
including customisable ballotins and a range dedicated to Luxembourg
pralines and orangettes are already a huge success
Mjahed is an ambassador for his profession
He strives to educate his customers about the challenges facing the cocoa industry and to make them aware of the need for more responsible production
“People have very little information,” he says
which range from learning about cocoa to passing on his knowhow
He also offers customised team-building activities for companies
And when asked why he chose RG Chocolaterie as his name
Mjahed replies: “The G stands for Gabriel
because those close to me have always considered me to be a great dreamer.” His ultimate dream is to conquer the Japanese market
“a country that is very fond of chocolate.” But first things first
Mjahed is investing in the future: new equipment for his laboratory
a redesigned shop front to appeal to passers-by..
It’s a chocolate adventure that’s only just begun

The future of the Liberty Steel site in Dudelange and its employees will apparently be assured
with a prospective acquirer reportedly found
A court-appointed bankruptcy trustee has made his choice: a buyer for Liberty Steel in Dudelange has obtained a go-ahead for the transfer of activities and the retention of employees
"There are candidates to take over part of the site
others to take over the site without any activity
but there are also potential buyers with a view to continuing the activity with the employees"
the administrator in the case of Liberty Steel in Dudelange
Fifteen days later and the 14 February deadline for submitting applications from potential buyers has passed
the bankruptcy trustee was unavailable to answer questions by telephone and had not yet responded to emailed requests for comment at the time of publication
several sources have told Paperjam that the case for a buyer with a transfer of activities and the retention of 147 employees has been finalised
deputy general secretary of the LCGB trade union
commented on Tuesday 18 February that "for the moment there is no official confirmation
It seems that a buyer with an industrial plan has been selected
but it's up to the trustee to announce this
We've been working on this for five years
so we're remaining cautious and attentive.” It would be "the best solution"
with a bankruptcy and a possible resumption of activities
and the procedures are still long before any employees return to the site.”
So not everything is done for the takeover of Liberty Steel
Discussions are now scheduled between the trustee
the potential buyer and the bankruptcy judge
with the trustee's primary objective being to settle the company's debts

to improve the skills of job applicants at the CDMH and to raise awareness of the importance of migration in Luxembourg and Europe
Research areas include the dynamics of migration as a system
as well as interactions between native and non-native populations
the Greater Region and Dudelange in particular will also be studied
The chair aims to compare past and present migration in Luxembourg
seminars and international collaboration on the history and challenges of migration
The chair is funded by the city of Dudelange and the University of Luxembourg
The city will make a financial contribution of €200,000 per year
giving a total of €1m over the initial period of the agreement (2025-2029)
It hopes that the chair will promote its migratory past and make Dudelange a key location for understanding migration in Luxembourg
Minister of Labour Georges Mischo expressed optimism Tuesday about resolving the prolonged uncertainty facing 150 Liberty Steel employees in Dudelange
acknowledging the "very tiring" six-month wait for a buyer while assuring workers "they will not be forgotten."
reached a critical point when Liberty Steel filed for bankruptcy in November 2024
employees at the Wolser industrial zone have maintained the site while facing contradictory demands - either seeking alternative employment or registering as unemployed
Trade unions OGBL and LCGB have condemned what they describe as an "absurd and endless situation"
During Tuesday's Economic Committee meeting in Luxembourg City
Minister Mischo revealed: "We have proposals on the table that we cannot yet disclose
but we are confident we can find a solution." He later reiterated this message directly to protesting workers outside the Ministry of Economy building
though noted the proposals' feasibility requires further discussion
The minister acknowledged the severe impact on workers: "This is a very
very critical and exhausting situation that has now been going on for six years." His public assurance - "We will support you...And we will not forget you!" - came as employees marked six months without pay
While initial aid was distributed post-bankruptcy
unions maintain these measures are insufficient
OGBL steel and mining union secretary Stefano Araujo emphasised: "We must preserve the workforce - the site has operational potential
but cannot function without its employees."
Trade unions are pressing for accelerated action following the identification of Turkish steel producer Tosyali Holding as the prospective buyer for Liberty Steel
"We now need concrete steps to finalise the transition to this buyer or another"
echoing workers' frustrations over the prolonged sale process.Minister Mischo confirmed the state has "done everything it can"
and anticipates the buyer's commitment by mid-May
The protracted bankruptcy-to-takeover process has revealed flaws in Luxembourg's crisis management framework
Unions argue current tools are inadequate for such complex industrial cases
creating a "legal vacuum that demands urgent attention."
Fornieri issued a stark warning: "If lawmakers fail to act after this dramatic
He particularly highlighted disparities in cross-border worker protections: "Social measures lack consistency across France
We must rethink the Greater Region's framework to ensure fair treatment for all workers."
the Mama Boys group opened a new address in Dudelange: Kantin
It’s an atypical place that brings together a restaurant and a microbrewery
The location is truly incredible: a locomotive hall on the future site of Neischmelz
just behind the National Audiovisual Centre
The old industrial building was renovated by CBA Architects but the shell remains
The city of Dudelange had issued a call for tenders for the operation of this atypical venue
I knew straight away that we had the ideal location,” recalls
who embarked on the business with his partners Tom and Ray Hickey for the restaurant and Joël Back
Alison Adams and Andy Schleck for the microbrewery
we were already producing our Twisted Cat beer
but were dependent on other production sites
When we saw that the town of Dudelange wanted to develop a microbrewery and a restaurant
I was immediately convinced by its potential.”
The site has retained its industrial character
The old hall was renovated by CBA Architects
who suggested using containers to house the kitchens and toilets
A vast bar serves a wide variety of craft beers
A microbrewery open to othersAt the back of the hall
an area is now reserved for the microbrewery
We help them to create and develop their own recipes and provide them with the tools they need to brew and even can their own products.” It was here
that the beer for the BAC bar was recently created and produced
“We also have a Brew School where you can create your own beer
as well as a 500-litre production of beer kept in custom-designed cans
The names of the partners are inscribed on the work tools
The microbrewing facilities are on the cutting edge
A restaurant where you live an experienceAt the front of the microbrewery is the “brew pub-style” restaurant
with a few dishes that underline the fact that it belongs to the world of brewing: tarts flambéed with the brewery’s yeast
a ‘Braumeister’ cordon bleu with malt breadcrumbs..
There are also Luxembourg dishes and dishes with mixed flavours
with a few Asian touches or the unmissable burgers
which are served directly from the production site to the bar--with no intermediaries--as well as a selection of beers produced by other local and international microbreweries
The bar impresses with its selection of beers served on draft
which regularly produces the seven beers marketed under the Twisted Cat brand
and two collaborations with an international microbrewery per year
We’re also planning to develop our export market
we’ve developed our network and we’re ready to tackle markets in neighbouring countries.”
situated between the old town of Dudelange and the future Neischmelz district
It’s a place that plays a full part in the transitional urban planning and life that is gradually taking hold while the site develops
so just imagine what it will be like when the neighbourhood is denser!” says Boisante
who also confirms that they have achieved the targets they set themselves for this first year of operation
“We also have some areas that are not yet fully developed
we’ve concentrated on the microbrewery and the restaurant
but it’s still very much dinner party-style
We can do a lot more to develop the festive aspect
That’s what we intend to do over the next few months.”
The construction works can go ahead without affecting us
And it’s a win-win situation for the city of Dudelange too
as it also has a stake in the establishment’s turnover
It’s a way of contributing to the collective effort,” concludes the passionate entrepreneur
The bankruptcy of Liberty Liège-Dudelange and its Luxembourg site was declared on Friday 29 November
after the management admitted that it was in suspension of payments
The bankruptcy of Liberty Steel’s Dudelange site was declared this morning by the Luxembourg Commercial Court
Neither the local management nor the company’s lawyers were present at the Luxembourg Commercial Court at 9am on Friday 29 November
Liberty Liège-Dudelange and its Luxembourg site were declared bankrupt after the management admitted that it was in suspension of payments
Olivier Wagner was appointed receiver in front of a few journalists and the LCGB union’s deputy general secretary
who are entitled to their back pay for October and November,” commented Wagner as he left the court
“They will be entitled to their severance pay under the Labour Code
which corresponds to the month of the bankruptcy
and half the notice period to which they would have been entitled in the event of conventional dismissal.”
“Everything will be checked by me under the supervision of the supervisory judge
the files will then be sent to the employment administration
We must wait for the date of verification of the claims
which is set in the judgment for January 17
for it to be ratified and sent to Adem,” continued the new receiver
But since employees cannot wait several weeks without pay
the unions will try to find an accelerated procedure to release certain amounts
Olivier Wagner was appointed as trustee following the admission of bankruptcy of Liberty Steel in Dudelange
“Contacts have already been made with the ministries
the most important thing is the situation of the 147 employees and their salaries
there is still a long time to go before a single euro arrives in the employees’ bank accounts
as it promised us this week [labour minister (CSV)
as well as representatives of the economy ministry
met with the OGBL and the LCGB on Monday 25 November
“We will have to react very quickly and quickly get in touch with the receiver
We could perhaps be heading towards an unfinished bankruptcy if buyers act in the meantime to transfer the employment contracts to new ones
Because if we really enter a state of bankruptcy
This would make any possible recovery difficult,” added the deputy general secretary of the LCGB
A crucial stage of the watchmaking process: machining the case requires expertise and precision
Dudelange is famous for its industrial and steelmaking past
But the city is also on a prestigious map: that of luxury watch collectors
It is here that Duke Horlogerie has established its headquarters and production workshop
a manufacture that is even the envy of the Swiss
but one that is well known to major watch and art collectors
The idea for Duke Horlogerie was born in 2018 in the mind of Alessio Muller
the Duke First Edition and the Duke by Vianney Halter
These two models featured the hallmarks of the manufacturer: an octagonal case and a tourbillon that floats thanks to an ingenious invisible sapphire bridge system
These two limited-edition models were quickly snapped up and contributed by word of mouth to the brand’s reputation in the small world of watch collectors and art lovers
As soon as these models were launched on the market
Alessio Muller was already thinking about his next move: a third generation of timepieces with a smaller diameter (41 mm compared to 44 mm) and a thinner profile (10 mm compared to 14.5 mm)
two models will be officially presented at Dubai Watch Week from 19 to 23 November 2025
a key event in the industry to which the manufacturer has been invited
“a reinterpretation of the Duke First Edition,” is a self-winding two-hand model with a tourbillon and the distinctive feature of being made entirely of titanium
Only the technical parts that do not lend themselves to the use of titanium will be in steel: the barrel spring and the balance-spring
A second three-hand automatic model without tourbillon will also be offered
which will enable us to broaden our customer base.”
Launching two models together is an operational challenge for the manufacturer
only Alessio Muller has been in charge of production
exclusive production approach will be maintained
But we will no longer be making limited series
the only limit will be production capacity.”
That means eight tourbillon models and 18 non-tourbillon models per year
limits which still represent a near tripling of production for the brand
Alessio Muller admits that tripling production has been a major challenge: “You have to learn to work as part of a team.” This team now includes two milling programmers
a materials engineer and a watchmaker in charge of research and development
which allows me to concentrate on designing the movement and assembling it.”
How do you recruit such specialised people here in Luxembourg
you have to find people who are passionate about watchmaking without necessarily having worked in it before
Our two programmer-machinists come from the medical sector
Our watchmaker comes from a very large luxury group
There were four watchmakers for the whole group
He felt like just another number in the group
The challenge is to include them all in the adventure.”
there is one person in charge of administration
All are based in Dudelange and the team is set to grow even further
two watchmakers and two polishers will have joined the team
What can we expect in terms of developing the range
“Our philosophy is to release one new calibre a year over the next five to six years
this year being the exception with two models
we’ll be adding complications as we go along
such as a perpetual calendar and astronomical complications.” 2026 will also see the launch of a ladies’ watch
Reducing the size of the case is a market demand
“Our first two models were pre-series made to test the market and see what customers wanted from us
refining it is something our customers want.”
Duke Horlogerie’s customers are mainly located in the Middle East
“Europe is a slightly more conservative market
A lot of people are already interested in us here
but they will probably wait for the third or fourth model to acquire one of our products,” explains Denis Muller
“Our clientele also includes art collectors who find our watches very interesting in terms of design.”
This is an international clientele that frequently comes to Dudelange to visit the manufactory
or even to request customisation elements for their timepieces
And they also take the opportunity to visit the grand duchy
Alessio Muller was awarded the Prix Innovation Artisanat in the design category
organised by the Chambre des métiers and the Société Nationale de Crédit et d'Investissement (SNCI)
The initiative called "Dress Like a Student Day" was launched by the BTS Digital Content class as part of an awareness campaign on student fashion and its impact
As explained on the Lycée Nic Biever (LNB) website
student clothing styles have evolved significantly in recent years
While past generations dressed more classically and uniformly
today's students opt for more individual styles
often favouring casual sportswear like jogging suits
But does this style still fit within a school setting
the BTS students highlighted the hygiene aspect–pointing out that many students wear the same jogging suits at school
titled "Your Outfit Speaks for You," aimed to spark discussion on how clothing choices influence perception
students produced videos on the topic that were shared on school and BTS social media channels
The campaign got people talking–exactly as intended
LNB director Yves Schmartz saw it as a meaningful exercise
and get students to reflect on whether their outfits are always appropriate for the setting
Some found it strange or even uncomfortable to see their teachers dressed like them while others appreciated the effort
Deputy director Romain Fogen noted: "Many students really liked the idea and enjoyed seeing their teachers in a totally different way for once."
agreeing that jogging suits may not always be suitable for school
The debate over dress codes in Luxembourgish schools is nothing new
Should schools introduce stricter clothing rules
And what about teachers–should they also follow a set dress code

HB Dudelange narrowly edged past HB Käerjeng at the very last moment
Käerjeng player Tina Welter announced after the final that she would likely end her career after this season
This was the fourth time in five years (after 2021
and 2023) that these two teams faced each other in a cup final
with only Differdange breaking the pattern in 2024
The match was also a tactical duel between two former youth teammates – Mikel Molitor coaching Dudelange and Dan Mauruschatt leading Käerjeng
Both teams struggled to find their rhythm early in the game
with numerous technical errors on both sides
Käerjeng initially appeared stronger but then hit a scoring drought
going ten minutes (from the 7th to the 17th minute) without finding the net
Barbara Fangueiro showcased her skills in goal
helping Dudelange to regain composure after a shaky start
A change in the Dudelange backcourt briefly brought more structure to their attack
and their attack became rushed and disorganised
Käerjeng goalkeeper Zorana Jurcevic made several key saves
Jurcevic’s heroics kept Käerjeng in the match
and Lena Kirtz finally broke their ten-minute scoring drought
forcing Dudelange coach Mikel Molitor to call a timeout
endured 12 minutes without a goal (from the 13th to the 25th minute)
Dudelange continued to struggle against Käerjeng’s strong defensive wall
They made an unusual number of technical errors
and even usually reliable players like Kim and Joy Wirtz missed key shots
allowing Dudelange to equalise at 12:12 in the 45th minute
with both sets of fans urging their teams on to the very end
When Lara Steffen scored to put Dudelange two goals ahead in the 57th minute and Tea Gajic missed a crucial shot shortly after
this is their 16th Luxembourg Cup win and their third consecutive title
they had already achieved the remarkable feat of winning the cup four times in a row
the evening ended happily for HB Dudelange
who had reached both the men’s and women’s finals this year
the men’s team fell short against Bierchem on Saturday

deputy general secretary of the LCGB labour union
restarting the plant will require the skills of the current employees
Following the declaration of bankruptcy on 29 November
Liberty Steel employees are still waiting to know their future
“The employees will be entitled to the severance payments provided for in the labour code
which correspond to the month of the bankruptcy
December--and half the notice period to which they would have been entitled in the event of conventional dismissal,” explained Olivier Wagner as he
when Liberty Liège-Dudelange and its Luxembourg site were declared bankrupt
“The legal amount owed by the Fonds pour l’emploi in the event of bankruptcy has been paid
as two months' wages were due before the Christmas holidays,” confirms Robert Fornieri
If we had had normal departure or redundancy conditions
particularly with the severance pay that we will never receive in the absence of a buyer,” adds Sylviane Gambini
employee and union delegate at Liberty Steel in Dudelange
who has held various administrative positions--accounting
purchasing and handling--was about to start her 39th year at the Dudelange site
“I’m a year away from retirement,” she points out
“Some employees have already found another job just to be on the safe side
because some can’t wait to pay their bills
We’re explaining to them that they can break their probationary period and come back to Dudelange if business picks up again
But I understand everyone's distress.”
The site had 147 active employees at the time of the declaration of bankruptcy
If there is a transfer of activity within three months
employment contracts will be reactivated and seniority retained
“The deadline for finding a buyer is therefore the end of February,” Fornieri sums up
either in a takeover without staff or activity
in favour of a takeover with the workforce
to ensure a long-term future for the site and its employees
Restarting the plant will require the skills of the current employees.”
The next two weeks are crucial: employees need to know whether they will return to work or whether they will have to look for another job
It won’t all be decided at the last minute
we should know whether we’re heading for a takeover
“This dossier has been a calamity for three years
“This is a huge challenge: I’ve never seen an issue so far-fetched
It would be a total failure for everyone--ministries
unions and employees--not to restart the plant.”
Another problem concerns cross-border workers
Belgium and Germany is not yet effective,” explains Gambini
the amount paid by the Fonds pour l’emploi is considered to be a salary
This creates inconsistencies in the Greater Region.”
delays in the processing of unemployment files are exacerbating the situation
whether single parents or dependent on a single income
The 150 employees at Dudelange have not been paid their salaries for the month of October
With November coming to an end this Saturday
there is every reason to fear that they will not be paid for this period either
While employees at the Liberty Steel plant in Dudelange have not received a salary since October
the unions and the relevant ministries are already working to save jobs in the event of bankruptcy
and I don’t have the words to describe the atrocity of the situation facing the employees of Liberty Steel in Dudelange
The plant is on the brink of collapse and this is the realisation of the fear we have had since the takeover in 2019.” These are the words of Robert Fornieri
labour minister (CSV) and representatives of the ministry of the economy (DP) was on an economic mission in China) met with the OGBL and LCGB unions and the staff delegation to discuss the current situation
the future of Liberty Steel in Dudelange and the non-payment of wages
“The minister of labour… assured the unions and the staff delegation that his ministry would seek solutions to avoid any further deterioration,” says the ministry’s press release
But two scenarios seem to be looming on the horizon: suspension of payments and bankruptcy
or transfer of the business to potential buyers
“But what company would want to take over sites in debt?” asks Stefano Araujo
“If the company were to declare bankruptcy
a receiver would be appointed and a legal framework would allow employees to be paid while one or more buyers were found.”
Potential buyers for the Liberty Steel sites (Dudelange and Liège in particular) have already come forward
“But in the end the group never followed through on these offers
and now they are blackmailing us,” continues Araujo
Fornieri adds: “Liberty Steel’s management have been insanely stubborn in their refusal to sell
and their attitude is incomprehensible and inexplicable
They did everything they could to prevent the requests of the buyers from succeeding
and yet they had no industrial project for the Dudelange site.”
the Luxembourg site “has knowhow and products that are in great demand
But nobody trusts Liberty Steel to sign contracts
they’re basically traders.” “And the plant’s local managers are in the same boat as the employees--they’ve been abandoned by the group too,” says Robert Fornieri
Liberty Steel made a commitment to the unions and employees to put the site up for sale so that it could be taken over and operations relaunched
presented as a glimmer of hope for the workers
the OGBL and LCGB unions are calling on the European Commission and the member states
Faced with a group that is sinking one European entity after another
it is imperative to protect the employees of Dudelange and to ensure the future of the site
The commission and the member states must act to put Liberty out of business and allow other players to take over,” commented the unions in a joint press release this week
at an extraordinary works council meeting in Belgium
the unions learned that an American and an Italian company were interested in taking over Liberty Steel’s Liège sites
Time will tell whether the Dudelange site will also be involved
some of the buildings have dimensions that make you dizzy
A number of brownfield redevelopment projects are underway across the country
and is being carried out by the Housing Fund (Fonds du logement)
It's a large-scale project that requires both patience and expertise
To our readers: the Paperjam editorial team spent Thursday and Friday in Dudelange
This article is part of that special series
The Neischmelz project in Dudelange is a large-scale mixed-use development
the Housing Fund (Fonds du logement) will develop a new mixed neighbourhood that will include 1,575 homes
between the two historic districts of Schmelz and Italie
This former steelworks site has been undergoing redevelopment for many years: following the closure of the Laminoir in 2005
followed by an initial master plan in 2010
Public enquiries and consultations were held in 2013
and in 2016 the Fonds du Logement became the owner of the land
specific amendments were made to municipality’s general development plan (PAG)
leading to the development of four special development plans (PAPs)--North
South)--which were approved by the Dudelange local council in 2020
preparatory studies and authorisations have been drawn up and approved
Remediation work began in 2023 and continued in 2024
Delivery of the first housing units is now scheduled for 2028
"We're working on a former Arbed industrial site
we have to deal with polluted land that needs to be properly treated and managed before we can develop a new urban quarter," explains Jacques Vandivinit
to whom the development has been entrusted
"We are currently carrying out the pre-development work
in other words everything to do with the servicing of the land
the underground infrastructure needed to introduce the networks and various fluids." Given the vastness of the site
it is the Central and Southern PAPs that are concerned
The North PAP will be dealt with at a later date
and the Italy PAP is the responsibility of the City of Dudelange
"The latter PAPs are also less affected by industrial activity
Site preparation work has been underway in Neischmelz since 2023
Numerous teams are at work processing the rubble
The size of the site means that it can be stored on site
Some of the soil treated on site can be reused directly in the project
explains: "The decontamination work is subject to an order issued by the Ministry of the Environment
we don't have to carry out a total evacuation and we can rework much of the soil on site
The large size of the site also means that a large volume can be stored on site
avoiding the need to load lorries for removal
we encourage the re-use of this soil on site
or to fill in old galleries and existing tunnels
This small quantity of soil to be evacuated reduces both the environmental impact and the financial impact."
Vandivinit states: "We work as much as possible with a view to a circular economy
We are very ambitious when it comes to the carbon footprint of this project
both during the operating phase and the construction phase
This approach to soil treatment is part of that ambition."
The energy requirements of such a new district are obviously considerable
From a sustainable development perspective
Medium-depth geothermal energy has been considered
But technical and administrative obstacles are currently holding back the full deployment of this approach
"Although this option is still being considered
we are also exploring alternative energy solutions that could be used for the first districts," says Vandivinit
which were initially planned as back-up solutions
They include a heating network supported by centralised heat pumps
"A number of industrial buildings are to remain on the site," explains Vit
"and we are going to take advantage of their presence to install as much technical equipment as possible for energy production
This type of impressive metal framework can only be seen on industrial sites
The activities of the past are still clearly visible in certain parts of the site
the roofs will be used to install photovoltaic panels that will supply electricity to the heat pumps and part of the rest of the district
"We have a surface area of 40,000m2 here
we can optimise it for the installation of panels
while ensuring that there is enough transparency to keep the business going underneath," says Vit
The broad outlines of the site's programme have been drawn up
but there is still work to be done on the detail
the creation of affordable housing is the top priority
representing around 3,500 additional inhabitants
55% of these homes will be for affordable rent
and 45% will be for affordable or low-cost sale
A whole series of buildings will be maintained to preserve the site’s heritage
there will be up to 10,000m2 of commercial space and around 6,000m2 of retail space
a halfway house and cultural facilities including the future National Centre for Public Collections
This new cultural facility is expected to include an exhibition space
but we don't yet have details of its scale," says Vandivinit
a number of industrial buildings need to be preserved
"Many of them have already been demolished
but there are still a number of buildings on the site that are now protected and that we need to restore," explains Vandivinit
work was carried out on the former cloakroom and wagonnage hall to make it more accessible to the public and to give the site a new lease of life before it is developed
This transitional urban planning approach has enabled Vewa to see the light of day and remain active to this day
The former red house will be maintained and repurposed
Some of the remains offer fascinating volumes
The former locomotive hall at the entrance to the site has also been restored and is
which is now used by the National Audiovisual Centre (CNA) as an exhibition space
This building had a more social vocation and will certainly retain this orientation
A dance school will also be housed in one of the buildings
it is housed onsite in a temporary building
it should be noted that this project has been the subject of
This budget covers the costs of cleaning up
"We are monitoring expenditure very closely and so far
costs are under control," states Vandivinit
The evenings (and Saturday afternoon) mainly included bands with Luxembourg connections
though interspersed with some strong European bands
The trio led by the French bassist Claude Tchamitchian was a fitting start for the two days
A really well-matched trio with Christophe Monniot on alto and Eric Echampard on drums
they seemed totally at ease with each other
Clearly the bassist is the leader in giving a drive and energy
And there seemed to be a subtle feel of Armenian folk
probably reflecting Tchamitchian’s heritage
there was the warm and sophisticated guitar of Dominic Miller
most known as the long-standing guitarist with Sting as well as his own albums on ECM
The driving drumming of Ziv Ravitz and the jazz-rock energy of ex-Level 42 keyboardist Mike Lindup acted as solid foundations for Miller’s melodism
He had ‘upped the ante’ on his regular band
Still there were regulars Nelson Veras on guitar and Ben van Gelder
temporarily replacing Kit Downes and drummer Antoine Pierre
he was fortunate to have Jeff Ballard and Aaron Parks
It’s understandable that he needed two players of such touch and skill if one thinks of the usual members
giving the group a different focus which one doesn’t hear on the album
for example on the tune “Kit’s Stones” (named after the pianist of course): Parks with the most caring interventions
and Ballard more of a sonic wizard than just a drummer
Airelle Besson is one of several female trumpeters lighting up the scene across Europe. The main focus of the two days was on bands from Luxembourg
On the first night we heard two examples from the young scene – perhaps a sign that the baton is being passed
they had the good fortune of Ziv Ravitz joining on drums
This created a more energetic performance than when I had heard her play in the duo before
The other band on the first night was a hard post-bop band led by Luxembourg trumpeter Daniel Migliosi
He included two UK musicians – Sean Payne on alto and Kai Craig
Both showed the blistering imaginative skills that we’ve known for a while
The second day moved between the main stage and the nearby Kantin
Airelle Besson interwove her trumpet sound with vocalist Lynn Cassiers
such that we couldn’t often separate out their separate sounds
Meanwhile Benjamin Moussay and Fabrice Moreau provided a great foundation from which they could build
We saw on the main stage one of the more established stars in Luxembourg
Pascal Schumacher has wowed us for many years on vibraphone
Marc Demuth (bass) and Jeff Herr (drums) was more lyrical and generally ‘softer’ than I had perhaps expected
As we had experienced with both Claire Parsons and Daniel Migliosi the night before
diverse energy in the new generation in Luxembourg
The bands in the more club-like venue seemed at ease
More grooving and including additional ‘contemporary’ elements
This was noticeable in the band of drummer Michel Meis
which included Pol Berardi on bass and Jérome Klein on keyboards
both consummate band leaders in their own right
But also with Linq and Jambal who had performed earlier in the day
Indeed Jambal openly acknowledges the debt it has to the current UK scene
It will be intriguing to see if these bands are able to really develop an identity beyond the local

Minister of labor Georges Mischo (CSV) said the closing of the Adem agency in Dudelange was “a difficult decision to make.” Photo: Adem
Labour minister Georges Mischo (CSV) announced on Friday that the 1,500 job seekers registered with Adem in Dudelange will be transferred to two other sites
Mayor Dan Biancalana denounces this decision
Confirming information revealed Thursday evening by Paperjam
labour minister (CSV) on Friday 20 September made the closure of the Adem agency located in Dudelange official
the 1,548 job seekers will be transferred in part to Luxembourg-Hamm (257 people)
and the rest to Esch-Belval (around 1,291)
“Each job seeker will receive a letter in the coming days,” said the minister
who called the closure “a difficult decision to make.” According to Mischo
is explained by premises deemed unsuitable in terms of quality of reception and accessibility and by unsuccessful searches for a backup solution
Adem says it has been thinking about it for three years
“in close consultation with the city of Dudelange.”
The municipality had notably proposed new premises as part of the future NeiSchmelz district
but the prospect is distant and probably wouldn’t be possible before 2030
Adem does not rule out the idea of returning to Dudelange one day
We have no plans to repatriate customers and agents in the short term,” indicated its director
“We also have no plans to close any more branches,” she said
adding: “The biggest focus in the future will be on the big branches
because that’s where we offer the widest range of services
Customers’ needs are less about where they live and more about their journey.”
These three agencies are Luxembourg (111 agents
8,656 job seekers registered) and Diekirch (47 agents
nor for the nearly 1,600 job seekers in Dudelange
Roeser and Frisange,” reacted the mayor of Dudelange
“A state service is closing its doors in the fourth largest city in the country while
efforts have been made towards decentralisation
other ministries are jostling to get services in Dudelange
“The ministry of labour and Adem had asked us to find other premises
We played our role as intermediary by providing addresses
we did not receive any feedback on the reasons why the premises could not be taken into consideration,” said the mayor
Biancalana was surprised by the method used by the labour ministry
“I only received a call from the minister on Thursday evening
we had sent an initial letter in mid-April and the municipal council had voted on a motion by a majority--only the CSV had not voted for it
have received neither a response nor even an acknowledgement of receipt
Communicating the day before is neither correct nor respectful.”

Marlène Kreins is in charge of the Dominique Lang and Nei Liicht art centres
she tells us more about her work and her involvement in culture in Dudelange
(To our readers: the Paperjam editorial team spent Thursday and Friday in Dudelange
Could you explain the artistic direction you are developing for the two local galleries
I’m sticking to this line of monographic exhibitions
Nei Liicht is an intimate space because it’s an old family house
with modest-sized rooms that communicate with each other
Galerie Dominique Lang has a completely different feel
as we are in the former waiting room of a railway station
The downstairs room has high ceilings and a fairly generous volume
but the upstairs has much lower ceilings and lots of nooks and crannies
so it’s harder to get to grips with the exhibition
but it’s a space that also offers scope for experimentation.”
these two buildings offer complementary spaces
It could be an emerging artist or a more established one
we try to ensure that the exhibition at Dudelange acts as a springboard for the artist
enabling them to show their work in a context that could later take them to a larger art centre or museum
as has been the case in recent years with exhibitions of work by Jean-Pierre Adam
Dominique Lang and currently Marc Henri Reckinger
And I’m currently working on organising an exhibition of the work of Armand Strainchamps.”
These spaces are also unique in that they are halfway between an art centre and a commercial gallery
we are an art centre in the sense that we programme exhibitions
write presentation texts for the public and sometimes publish a catalogue
but the artists also have the opportunity to sell the works exhibited
it should be noted that we do not operate like a traditional art gallery
since the city of Dudelange does not take a percentage of the sales made
the city of Dudelange offers an honorarium to the artist who exhibits and systematically buys a work for its collection
the works of which are exhibited in the offices of the municipality.”

What is your approach to these disciplines
I try to give pride of place to women’s and feminist theatre
We also have a few productions for young audiences

Dudelange’s identity is linked to the steel industry
the town chose to redevelop around culture and sport
with around 10% of the annual municipal budget devoted to culture
This substantial commitment means that the people of Dudelange can access shows at very modest prices
with even free access to the Opderschmelz cultural centre for Kulturpass beneficiaries
with the Fête de la musique always a highlight
and the Like a Jazz machine and Zeltik festivals at the cultural centre.”
You are also president of the Centre National de la Culture Industrielle (CNCI)
Could you tell us about this organisation and its work
“It’s a project that has been around since 2004
written by a team around Antoinette Lorang
with the aim of creating a museum of industrial culture
we revised the project--because a new museum doesn’t make sense--and reoriented it to position it more on the constitution of a network of actors working on the preservation and enhancement of this industrial culture
This network brings together 17 players of varying sizes
to the Fonds Belval and small voluntary associations such as the Amicale des hauts fourneaux
We work hand in hand to organise events and activities
This network brings together players in the south of the country
but also in the rest of the country and beyond
mainly in France and Belgium at the moment.”
“We are also bringing this issue to the attention of public authorities such as the ministry of culture and local authorities
We are also working on the built heritage of brownfield sites that deserve to be preserved
We draw up proposals for redevelopment and identify buildings that deserve to be preserved
This work is generally carried out in collaboration with INAP
We are currently working on the Blowers’ Hall at Belval
the wasteland at Dommeldange and the Metzeschmelz.”
“Another aspect of our work is the preservation of archives
We have to deal with a very diverse range of material
So we need to find an archiving method that will ensure the longevity of this material
which is often still kept within families and therefore subject to disappearance depending on the interests and sensitivities of the various people who own them
The last aspect that the CNCI is developing is teaching and raising awareness of this industrial culture
we receive subsidies from the culture ministry
as this approach is part of the Kulturentwécklungsplang 2018-2028 and was included in the coalition agreement of the previous government
Michael Friedman is head coach of the Dudelange Steelers
getting involved was his ticket to building a new network in Luxembourg
It can often be difficult for expats to find a sense of belonging or community upon arriving in Luxembourg
Things like language barriers or lack of cultural connection are arduous issues to overcome
and a lot of people arriving here come to view those factors as insurmountable
clubs are a very good way to jump these hurdles
who currently works as a client onboarding associate at HQLAX
joined the American football club when he came to Luxembourg in the summer of 2021
Paperjam sat down with Friedman to discuss his experience with associations in Luxembourg and how he would advise expats in similar situations
“When you move anywhere new and you don’t have family or friends
it’s like starting from scratch,” Friedman said at the start of the interview
Friedman has always been a fan of American football and hoped to continue pursuing his passion after moving to Luxembourg
He started going to the gym near his house in hopes of finding an athletic community there
Friedman then began looking for a place to watch professional American football games on Facebook and happened upon the Dudelange Steelers
The Dudelange Steelers has long been the only American football club in Luxembourg
filled with Luxembourgers and tons of other nationalities.”
Friedman was immediately hooked by the atmosphere of the club and found it awesome to be surrounded by “people with a shared interest from all corners of the world.” After about a year of attending practices
he eventually became the head coach of the men’s section of the club
joining the Steelers provided Friedman with a social network that helped him ease into his life in Luxembourg
Members of the team assisted Friedman in setting up his home internet
something that would have been very complicated for him without their help
“I [even] know a police officer now,” Friedman joked
but not everyone may be as lucky to find the hand-in-glove fit that Friedman found
Even he found it difficult with the Steelers at first
“There is an element of getting out of your comfort zone
It’s tough to show up those first couple of times.” But to him
and keep going to things like it,” he said when asked what he would say to expats looking for a club
and the right people will follow.” For Friedman
it was American football but for others it could be anything
is seen during a practice session at John F
Friedman’s advice is valid as he has been with the Steelers since 2021 and has guided the club to great success
the senior division of the club was able to climb up a league and they now compete against higher level teams in the German area bordering Luxembourg
The Dudelange Steelers are actively looking for new members
Their flag section practices Mondays and Fridays from 7pm to 9pm
and their senior contact section practices Wednesdays and Fridays at the same times

Edy Schütz took over Schütz Bicycles in 1972
but it is now his son who is in charge of most of the activities
then taken over in 1972 by former champion cyclist and Tour de France stage winner Edy Schütz
Schütz Bicycles has successfully adapted to changes in the industry over the decades
the shop has distinguished itself by its close and attentive relationship with its customers
Here’s a look back at the history of an institution driven by a champion’s passion for cycling
Just a stone’s throw from the town hall in Dudelange
a small shop attracts the discerning eye: Schütz Bicycles
Behind this discreet façade lies a veritable institution in Luxembourg cycling
the shop bears the heritage of former professional rider Edy Schütz
when Edy Schütz’s father-in-law opened his workshop
“My father-in-law ran this shop with my wife
the young Luxembourg cyclist was shining on the roads
he made his mark by winning the 18th stage of the 1966 Tour de France
after a memorable breakaway from Raymond Poulidor
While under contract with the Mercier team
Edy suddenly lost his father-in-law in 1972
“I still had a few good years left in cycling
Taking over the shop seemed the best option
Being my own boss appealed to me more than working in an office or for the local council,” he explains
he hung up his bike to take over the family shop
“I still come in every day to lend a hand in the workshop or do the paperwork with my wife
But it’s mainly my son who has taken up the torch,” he says
The heart of Schütz Bicycles remains intact: a close relationship with its customers
we know our customers and we take the time to advise them
It’s this human contact that makes the difference,” insists the former boss
gravels (hybrids between road and track bikes) and electric models
“You don’t sell a road bike to someone who wants to ride a mountain bike

Edy Schütz has witnessed the evolution of cycling
While racing bikes dominated sales for a long time
electric models have won over a new audience
many people aged between 45 and 50 are back in the saddle

"The history of migration is an essential area of research for Luxembourg society and its challenges," says Denis Scuto
a professor at the University of Luxembourg
Photo: Matic Zorman/Maison Moderne (archives)
Dudelange offers researchers a unique opportunity to understand immigration in Luxembourg
Historian Denis Scuto analyses this laboratory role and the reasons why xenophobic discourse is incompatible with the Luxembourg model
To our readers: Paperjam's editorial team spent Thursday and Friday in Dudelange
To shed light on the reality of migration in Luxembourg
That's how we might sum up Denis Scuto's mission
The son of a Sicilian immigrant and a Luxembourg mother
the associate professor of contemporary Luxembourg history at the University of Luxembourg points out that "one out of every two Luxembourgers is the product of migration
meaning that he or she has at least one parent who was born abroad"
which has been operational at the University since 1 January 2025
Guillaume Meyer: What makes Dudelange an ideal location for research into migration
Dudelange is home to a real place of memory of immigration: the Italian quarter
is reminiscent of the architecture of the towns of origin of the Italians who migrated here
the industrialisation of Dudelange has always been closely linked to migratory flows
And these migrations didn't just come from Italy
eight out of every ten inhabitants of Dudelange were born elsewhere
Migration included Luxembourgers from other regions
German specialists and Italian and Polish workers
The Italian quarter therefore symbolises a much more diverse migration than might at first appear
Dudelange also stands out for its political history
It saw the election of the first mayor of Italian origin
It also saw the election of the first cabinet minister of Italian origin
Dudelange is also home to the Centre de documentation sur les migrations humaines (CDMH)
of national importance and for the Greater Region
has a library of 25,000 works and a vast collection of archives
a database was set up at the CDMH based on censuses and arrival declaration forms
It lists thousands of inhabitants of Dudelange
We think it's time to give this work a more institutional dimension
What will the general public see of your work
The first is to revisit the work done 30 years ago in the collective work 'Itinéraires croisés: Luxembourgeois à l'étranger
there have been many new migrations and research has been carried out
the CDMH and I also want to put together a travelling exhibition on the history of migration in Luxembourg
This will reach a wide audience across the country and beyond
we are creating a participatory database on the history of migration in Luxembourg and the Greater Region
This project is part of a series of initiatives to create innovative digital tools in the human sciences
One of our priorities will be to analyse how migration has transformed Luxembourg society over the last 30 years
Our starting point will be the change in government discourse from the 1980s onwards
immigration began to be perceived in a positive light
Luxembourg made the strategic choice to rely more and more on highly qualified immigration
These policies have had a considerable impact: in 30 years
the migratory balance has recorded a surplus of more than 200,000 people
around 130,000 people have acquired Luxembourg nationality since 2009
These figures bear witness to the profound transformation of our society
What lessons can be drawn from a comparison of past and current migration to Luxembourg
This comparison highlights both continuities and ruptures
There are continuities: whatever the period - 19th
20th or 21st century - Luxembourg has always attracted people for their skills
agriculture and the fledgling steel industry
the emphasis shifted away from agriculture and commerce and towards construction and heavy industry
construction and industry remain important
Another area of continuity concerns labour immigration
What has changed radically is the perception of this migration
they were often seen and defined as temporary
They were called Gastarbeiter [guest workers]
in Luxembourg as in other prosperous regions
migration is recognised as a structural phenomenon
The major change has also been the evolution of attraction strategies
we have been recruiting highly qualified people
The city of Luxembourg and its neighbouring municipalities form a metropolis
It is now populated by highly qualified professionals
The changing profile of immigrants to Luxembourg is therefore marked by a rise in qualifications..
a certain duality already existed at the beginning of the 20th century
most Italians came to do the hard work in factories or on building sites
while German specialists arrived as engineers or managers
Luxembourg's middle class falls between two extremes
a highly qualified elite made up of executives from banks and other high-paying sectors
The data from the 2021 census confirms this
the majority of Luxembourg graduates now have a bachelor's or master's degree
who used to be mainly Italian or Portuguese
but now come from a wider range of backgrounds
The growing importance of English in Luxembourg society reflects this evolution
the migration debate remains relatively contained in Luxembourg
Will the country end up adopting a similar discourse to its neighbours
the 1980s marked a major change in discourse
While many European countries refused to admit that they were immigration states
Luxembourg was one of the first to affirm this
migration policy had been very restrictive
Employers then wanted to use Tunisian labour via a bilateral agreement
But this proposal was rejected by the government
but they wanted to attract those from the south of the country
they tried to limit the immigration of Cape Verdeans
Luxembourg society was officially recognised as an immigration society
why migration debates are less confrontational here than elsewhere
Populist rhetoric sometimes emerges under the guise of protecting the Luxembourg language or opposing demographic growth
I don't see any real xenophobic rhetoric
The reason is simple: everyone knows that immigration is essential to the country's prosperity
play a central role in financing pensions and social security
relies heavily on an international workforce
if we adopt a radical anti-immigration stance
Luxembourg's entire economic model will collapse."

John sat down with Sam to share exciting details about the upcoming schedule at Op der Schmelz
including must-see concerts and performances
He also dived into the much-anticipated Zeltik Festival
which brings together incredible artists from across the world for a celebration of traditional and contemporary Celtic sounds
With its vibrant atmosphere and impressive lineup
Zeltik continues to be a major highlight on the country’s festival calendar
John gave listeners a sneak peek into Fête de la Musique Dudelange 2025
an event that promises to transform the city into a music lover’s paradise
a dynamic and diverse festival that showcases an eclectic mix of genres and talent
If we want a diverse cultural landscape and we want people thinking differently and acting on their own
then we have to feed them also on the cultural part John also spoke passionately about the importance of small festivals in discovering new talent and preserving cultural diversity
but we also have it at Fête de la Musique a lot
We've always built our reputation on discovering artists before they get known
imagine no one had discovered U2 or Coldplay or Radiohead at some point
and they wouldn't have had a chance to play at decent places."
He also addressed the lack of industry support for emerging acts: "I'm not talking about you
They hardly go and discover new acts anymore
it's a firm telling the computer what to eat
there's no personal involvement like it used to be
in newspapers and radios because the record companies are not interested in music
John also raised concerns about the disappearance of small venues: "And if now these places are disappearing as well
all the small clubs as well are disappearing
which is logical if you wanna survive as a private promoter
Donald Trump or Live Nation are telling you to like
So if we want a diverse cultural landscape and we want people thinking differently and acting on their own
then we have to feed them also on the cultural part."
His words served as a strong reminder of why these grassroots events need continued support from both audiences and governments alike: "It's really
and why it's important to go out and listen to something else than just those mainstream acts that all sound the same."
