Ettelbruck straddles the juncture of the north and south of the Grand Duchy
with beautiful squares and flowered terraces
a host of local trails and longer hiking paths
make this a town worthy of an afternoon excursion
The name Ettelbruck comes from the original Indo-German name Atilbriga
The town itself was destroyed three times by fire in 1532
and was thus granted the right to hold 11 markets or fairs a year to raise money to rebuild what was destroyed by fire
The entire circuit is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs
and across 15 educational panels you can learn about the town from 901 to the present day
Place de la Resistance which was formerly the butter market and is home to Bottefra (a statue by Wil Lofy depicting a farmer’s wife selling her diary products
whilst trying to shoo away a dog with a ladle)
The first agricultural exhibition in Ettelbruck was held in 1883 and inaugurated in the presence of King Wilhelm III
The biggest of Luxembourg’s agricultural fairs
it usually takes place on the first weekend in July at the Deich meadows next to the town
horticulturalists and scientific researchers come together to present their produce and farm animals
Ettelbruck has three statues created by Marie Josée Kerschen
representing the three strengths of the city – agriculture
The farmer’s hand points to the desirable height the wheat should grow
the shopkeeper puts his finger into the hollow of his hand to emphasise that financial transactions should be correct
and the teacher points his fingers at the other figures to stress that money and riches are not the ultimate aim in life
A fresh produce and artisan market takes place weekly on a Friday from 7.30 to 13.00, with around 15 stands, offering fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese and other local produce, in the pedestrianised area of the town. Haff Ditgesbaach has a shop open from Monday to Friday 8.00 to 17.00
offering organic and Fairtrade products grown or made on site
sauerkraut and Bissen Tricentenary chocolates
Like Esch, Ettelbruck has offered its town to street artists since 2017, with the first project, a fresco by French artist Mantra, which was produced as part of the Kufa Urban Art project
musicians and young people to create together
In 2019 illustrator Alain Welter redesigned the façade of the General Patton Memorial Museum

It’s built on the site of the old parish church which dated back to 1702
the old parish church served as a grain store
coins and pottery were discovered that proved the original settlement at Ettelbruck was very old
The assembly room of the city hall has a panel of three stained-glass windows
Stone sculptures adorn the façade of the post office building
The old synagogue and Jewish cemetery are looked after by Al Synagog Ettelbréck asbl
Both are a testimony to Jewish heritage and life in Luxembourg
The synagogue was built in 1870 on rue de Warken
Plans are in place to restore the building
There is a Jewish cemetery created in 1881 about 1.2km from the site
after which the synagogue became a carpet store
the synagogue became a national monument managed by the non-profit association
It isn’t open to the public except on heritage days when visitors can attend a tour
Saint Sebastien church was built in Romanesque style in 1841
completed in 1851 and consecrated some 13 years later
including an oil painting entitled "The Ardent Bush" by Joseph Probst
and several windows representing a panorama of Ettelbruck
is named after the doctor Nicolas Huberty who became the personal physician to the Grand Ducal family at their palace in Colmar-Berg
he provided medical assistance to the injured crew of a military aircraft shot down by the Germans
and he went on to assist more than 300 Luxembourgish conscientious objectors who had gone into hiding
Patton Square pays tribute to General George Patton Jr
commander of the 3rd US army which liberated Ettelbruck on Christmas Day 1944
the square has a giant statue of the general
erected in 1970 in front of the Sûre bridge
and a Sherman M4-A1 tank from the brigade he commanded
The base of the statue has a martial sword to symbolise peace
The statue was created by Earle Freaser although the original is at the Westpoint Military Academy in America
Patton Square is the starting point for the Escapardenne Lee Trail (more about that later)
Ettelbruck also has an anti-aircraft bunker. Although it is not accessible to the public, you can take a virtual tour here
The Patton Memorial Museum
reopened this year on 17 January after refurbishment
It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00

A police patrol was immediately dispatched to the location of the altercation which involved a woman and a man supposedly related
allegedly beat the woman during their dispute
Following a display of aggressive behaviour
the presumed suspect was taken to the police station
During official procedures and the medical check-up at the hospital
the man continued to produce several death threats directed at the police officers
The public prosecutor's office ordered the detention of the suspect for death threats and physical injuries
he was questioned by the examining magistrate
After four years and four months of Nazi occupation
the first American tanks rolled into the town of Ettelbruck from Schieren at dawn on 11 September 1944
German forces had blown up the bridge over the Alzette
but Vicar Flies guided the Allied troops over the railway bridge on Rue Stackels
Ettelbruck was liberated twice by the Allied forces
with the second liberation taking place on December 25
These historic events were commemorated this weekend in Ettelbruck
known colloquially as "Patton-City" in honour of General George S
attended the ceremony and shared memories of his first visit to Luxembourg:
but I did learn to respect my grandfather's legacy
and we read all the biographies and watched the movie [Patton]
and I think we really came to honour the American troops who had fallen
and the people who took care of the cemetery and who take care of his memory."
Benjamin brought his son along to take part in the ceremony
Portions of the ceremony intentionally highlighted young voices by inviting students from Miami University's Luxembourg campus to deliver a speech
while Patton's great-grandson laid flowers at the Patton Monument
to evoke the importance of remembering history even today
Another reason why I'm glad to be here is that I can teach my son about it so that he can learn
and honour his history as well," Benjamin Patton explained
He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to members of the Patton Museum
and the citizens of Luxembourg for preserving and honouring his grandfather's memory and legacy
Fascinated history enthusiasts like Dan Arendt
who recreated the Willys Jeep used by General Patton during the Ardennes offensive
believe that the legendary general deserves to be honoured appropriately for his efforts
"I believe a man who has done so much for our country should be honoured too
I made my dream come true almost 25 years ago," Arendt shared
General Patton's grandson acknowledged that "[General Patton] was not perfect," but recalled some of his famous sayings
He was always moving forward and attacking
another piece of wisdom was 'always take care of your troops'"
The enduring legacy of General Patton is once again commemorated in Ettelbruck
Allied troops liberated the town for a second time after the cold and harsh months of the Battle of the Bulge through a newly established "Patton Square" in Ettelbruck

Etzella Ettelbruck have been crowned Luxembourgish champions for the 16th time following an 87:80 victory against T71 Dudelange
The home side secured the title with a convincing 3:0 sweep of the series
Etzella Ettelbruck were already the favourites for the championship
having won every match leading up to the final with an average margin of 22 points
with poor scoring success in the first quarter
managed to build momentum and establish a 9-point lead (34:25)
Although Ettelbruck temporarily lost their rhythm
they managed to turn the game around by half-time
After the sides switched ends for the second half
as both Dino Ceman and Joe Kalmes fouled out early
Etzella took full advantage in the closing stages
Etzella had the sharper finish and were able to celebrate victory after a thrilling match
Quatarrius Wilson made a decisive impact with 33 points
supported by Jimmie Taylor (28 points) and Philippe Gutenkauf (18 points)
The 2015 killing that shocked Ettelbruck is back in focus after the man responsible
escaped custody last week and was later recaptured in Germany
The killing of a 63-year-old man on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Ettelbruck in March 2015 ignited widespread public concern
authorities revealed that another attempted murder had occurred just five days earlier
as the suspect was apprehended but later deemed not criminally liable
the Appeals Court's pre-trial chamber declared the then 27-year-old suspect unfit to stand trial under Article 71 of the Criminal Code
This provision exempts individuals from criminal liability if
they were suffering from a mental disorder that impaired their judgment or self-control
and despite sufficient evidence linking him to the knife attacks
the court ultimately placed the man in a secure psychiatric unit at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Centre (CHNP) in Ettelbruck
the case has resurfaced following a new development
Despite an immediate manhunt and a missing person's alert from the Luxembourg police
warning that the individual was dangerous and should not be approached
the fugitive was located and arrested across the border in Germany
German authorities subsequently extradited him to Luxembourg
has been confirmed by the public prosecutor's office
which added that judicial authorities have requested a report from CHNP management to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident
The 2015 knife attacks led to significant discussions about public safety in Ettelbruck
proposals were made to review legislation governing psychiatric detentions
and increase police patrols in public spaces
When the police patrol checked the two people
they discovered that the man was carrying cash with him
The police did not specify which drugs she had
the presumed drug dealer appeared before the examining magistrate
The municipality of Ettelbruck honored athletes Patrizia van der Weken and Ni Xia Lian with street signs in their names to celebrate International Women's Day
The signs were placed along the main shopping street in Ettelbruck
Both athletes were away at competitions on 8 March. Van der Weken participated in the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, where she won a bronze medal in the 60m race.
The commune of Ettelbruck informed RTL that both athletes received their signs on Thursday morning
The ceremony was attended by Ettelbruck Mayor Bob Steichen
members of the Human Relations and Equal Opportunities Committee
as well as representatives from the Athletics Committee CAPA and the Table Tennis Association FLTT
The Luxembourg National School of Health (LTPS) in Ettelbruck
produces more energy than it consumes by storing superfluous energy instead of letting it go to waste
The award-winning building has not only become an innovative example in terms of this so-called 'positive energy' efficiency
it has also been turning heads thanks to its design
and the hot water tank have all been visibly integrated into the structure
Martine Schmit, architect at the Public Building Administration in Luxembourg, in a recent interview with Euronews explained that energy production and use are monitored over long-term cycles given that "buildings can actually last for more than fifty years"
The modern building – which houses 430 students
and six technical rooms – is entirely covered by solar panels and produces twice the amount of electricity that the school requires
heating is one of the key elements that render this project remarkable due to the instalment of a vertical 20-metre-high hot water tank
able to store up to 100,000 litres of water
A student interviewed by Euronews highlighted the comfort she experiences at the school
notably praising the air quality and temperature control that support students' ability to focus
Deputy director Carlo Gudenburg accordingly asserted that the "building has been designed to provide maximum educational opportunities and encourage students to work actively"
The Public Building Administration has revealed that the total budget invested into the LTPS amounts to €29 million
of which €1 million came from the European Union's Cohesion Policy
The municipalities of Ettelbruck and Hesperange have formally requested authorisation from Luxembourg police to install CCTV camera systems on their territories
The information was confirmed by Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden in response to a parliamentary question from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV)
already monitors designated security zones through a network of 308 cameras
Minister Gloden noted the programme is managed by a team of approximately ten personnel in the capital region
The Ministry of Home Affairs has been progressively expanding the surveillance network
having recently granted approval for CCTV installations in both Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange
with the latter authorisations issued in November 2024
Minister Gloden has introduced new legislation aimed at simplifying the municipal authorisation process for surveillance systems
The proposed bill seeks to balance enhanced public security measures with necessary safeguards for fundamental rights and personal freedoms
While most of the snowfall across Luxembourg ended on Wednesday afternoon
which means that most of the flood warnings are expected to remain in place throughout the day
Authorities also warn that the rise in temperatures has caused most of the snow to melt
further putting a strain on Luxembourg's rivers
and Syre rivers are all placed under orange alerts
The Alzette in particular might reach the red alert level over the course of the morning
though water levels are forecast to recede again on Friday morning
The areas around Mersch and Ettelbruck face the biggest flood risk
As for the northern parts of the Grand Duchy
the Sûre is also placed under orange alert
most notably around Diekirch and Bollendorf
the red alert level is expected to be reached in Diekirch by noon on Thursday
According to the latest statement from the authorities
the Moselle has now been placed under yellow alert too

At the request of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), MPs on the justice, healthcare, and security committees convened to discuss the judicial placement of individuals at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (CHNP) in Ettelbruck. The meeting followed an incident in early December when a man temporarily escaped during an accompanied outing before being quickly apprehended by police
The individual had been placed at the CHNP after being declared not criminally liable due to mental incapacity for fatally stabbing another man in 2015
LSAP MP Dan Biancalana emphasised the sensitivity of the issue
noting that it involves both public safety and the rehabilitation of affected individuals
He highlighted the importance of a psychiatric and medical approach in such cases and stressed that MPs sought clarity on the criteria used by medical professionals to determine whether patients may be granted temporary outings accompanied by hospital staff
These decisions are made by a specialised committee composed of two judges and two psychiatrists
The parliamentary discussion also touched on the responsibilities of psychiatrists when admitting potentially dangerous patients, particularly in light of an ongoing murder trial in Luxembourg City involving a defendant who had previously received psychiatric care
Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue explained that several parties – including family members
and the prosecution – can request the placement of an individual for medical reasons
psychiatrists themselves cannot initiate such placements
Margue underscored the importance of professional secrecy in psychiatric practice
which encourages patients to open up to their doctors
She cautioned against altering this principle
warning that doing so would raise significant ethical and practical concerns
Minister of Health Martine Deprez pledged to examine the deontological questions raised during the discussions
the Heintz Van Landewyck cigarette factory has dotted the southern entrance to Ettelbruck
Following the demolition of the factory four years ago due to a relocation of production to the Fridhaff–an industrial and commercial zone in Diekirch–a new commercial and administrative project will take its place
While the production hall of the cigarette factory was demolished in February 2021
originally called "Ettelbruck One" and now rebaptised as Centre administratif Nordstad
with the external renovations of the building almost finished
The first administration to grace this building with its presence will be the Université Populaire Luxembourg–an institution that offers lifelong learning courses for adults–which will open its doors to the public by the middle of next year
there is no semblance of the original cigarette factory site that used to lie between the Rue des Alliés and the train rails
The new administrative centre stands out as one crosses the entrance to Ettelbruck from the direction of Schieren
The premises above ground make up 19,000 gross square metres
Plans for a two-level underground car park are also underway
It is estimated that this monumental project will lead to the creation of 650 job opportunities
Landimmo CEO Jürgen Primm explains in conversation with RTL that the old blends with the new
as administrative sections of the Nordstad located in older buildings will mix with the novel institutions that will find their place in Ettelbruck
such as the aforementioned Université Populaire
The administrative sections located in the Nordstad will move from the Cité militaire area in Diekirch to the new premises in Ettelbruck
Some of these administrations include the Land Registry and Topography
and some administrative sections of the Ministry of Education
Even the public medical centre Maison médicale located in Avenue Lucien Salentiny will move to the new administrative centre due to space limitations
the 450 job opportunities in the public sector will be coupled with job openings from the private sector
as negotiations involving a bakery and a kiosk are ongoing
Further negotiations with the owner of the site–The Common Compensation Fund for the General Pension Regime–also involve the establishment of a restaurant
the electricity of the site will be covered by air-source heat pumps and by solar panels installed on the roof of the administrative centre
Ettelbruck mayor Bob Steichen shares his enthusiasm for the project with high hopes that it will have a positive impact on commercial activity in the municipality and beyond
Steichen stresses the regional focus that the project can have
making Ettelbruck a shopping city that strengthens the Nordstad region in general
He highlights the advantage of the project due to its proximity to the city centre
which will be better connected to it thanks to a planned bicycle highway
the costs of the new Nordstad administrative centre amount to an estimated €100 million
The Luxembourg police were called to respond to a case of domestic violence in Warken
on Monday after a woman was injured by her partner
A police patrol was promptly despatched to the scene
The police confirmed that the injured woman has been hospitalised for treatment
the suspect was formally taken into custody upon request of the public prosecutor's office
An investigation into the matter is currently underway
and the case will be referred to the courts for further legal proceedings
Monday saw the second 'Day of Agriculture' in Ettelbruck
with Agriculture Minister Martine Hansen addressing close to 400 audience members to speak about current trends and upcoming challenges
Hansen pointed out that while last year's sectorial revenue experienced a significant decrease
it still remained above the five-year average
Although markets are said to have recovered from the turbulent year of 2022
there are still certain products that give rise to concern
Milk prices have gone up while the average meat price has stabilised at an elevated level
but high demand for rapeseed is driving up its prices
Another talking point of the agriculture convention was livestock health
The Ministry unveiled plans for a new vaccination strategy
to be implemented in 2025 and designed to ensure that there are enough vaccines against bluetongue disease which affected numerous farm animals this year
Authorities are further beginning to stockpile vaccines against two other diseases that are currently spreading in western France
and which are expected to reach the Grand Duchy in the foreseeable future
A typical Sunday evening at Ettelbruck Hospital reflects the situation seen in many hospitals across the country–its emergency waiting room is full
with patients of all ages waiting their turn
Some have arrived independently while others have been brought in by ambulance
From sports injuries and workplace accidents to strokes
the emergency department must be prepared for all scenarios
the team treats between 160 and 170 patients per day
The ongoing wave of the flu has increased demand even more
head of emergency services at the Centre Hospitalier du Nord (CHdN)
The emergency department operates with a team of over 40 nurses working in three shifts: eight nurses in both the morning and afternoon
The hospital also relies on 11 emergency doctors
there are only six examination rooms which is no longer sufficient given the number of patients
the hospital plans to triple the number of "lits-portes" – beds for patients awaiting a decision on whether they will be admitted or discharged – bringing the total to 12
Hospital staff have observed a steady rise in emergency visits
Evenings after 6pm are now often busier than daytime hours
Ettelbruck Hospital also offers a dedicated emergency service for children
Known as "Pédiatrie de proximité," the service is staffed by a doctor and a nurse working in two shifts
The emergency department at Ettelbruck Hospital has been in operation since 2003
Some patients are even placed in the corridor due to a lack of space
the hospital is expanding its emergency department by an additional 300 square metres
designed to improve conditions for both patients and staff
CHdN also manages the hospital in Wiltz which will focus on elderly patient care
just a few hundred metres from the hospital
the new "Zenter Schlasskéier" will be built to provide outpatient treatments
Luxembourg police carried out inspections at several bars in Ettelbruck

authorities in Luxembourg City reported a mugging in the Gare neighbourhood
An unidentified assailant threatened a pedestrian and stole their wallet
An investigation into the incident is underway
New details emerged on Sunday regarding the arrest at Ettelbruck train station the previous day
Authorities confirmed that the man detained during the incident was carrying two small gas canisters
which led to the temporary closure of the station and a halt in train services between Mersch and Kautenbach
police announced that the gas canisters were not a threat
although initial reports suggested they could have contained helium
The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon
when police responded to reports of a man standing on the tracks and making threats
Train services were suspended around 1.00pm while the situation was handled
The suspect was apprehended without further complications

Trains will stop running on the main line between Ettelbrück and Gouvy in Belgium, as well as on the branch line connecting Kautenbach with Wiltz, the national rail company said in a press release. The lines will be closed from Saturday 31 August to Sunday 15 September, inclusive. Buses will carry passengers instead, stopping at all stations along the way.
The journey from Luxembourg to Troisvierges, which usually takes less than one hour and eight minutes on a direct train, will instead take an average of 35 minutes longer and include a bus ride from Ettelbrück onwards. Likewise, the usually-hour-long ride from the capital to Wiltz, with one change, will take between 15 and 30 minutes longer – also with one change.
“To ensure that customers can not only travel safely but also on a route with state-of-the-art technology, the CFL is also working on the northern line this year,” CFL external communications chief Tom Ewert told the Luxembourg Times by email. “This closure period will allow the CFL to renew the infrastructure contribution to safety and energy supply at the same time.”
During the two weeks, engineers will replace ageing signalling equipment at Ettelbrück in the name of safety and will also upgrade the power supply to the whole line, which has sometimes seen insufficient supply to passing trains, Ewert said. That work will include a new transformer station in Flebour.
The rail company chose the two-week period carefully, its press release says, to minimise impact. It is after the mandatory construction industry holiday, before the schools return, and allows residents of the north to easily access city attractions like the first week of the Schueberfouer.
The north of the country is especially popular with cyclists, who often take bicycles on trains in large numbers. CFL will provide a two-hourly bicycle shuttle service between Ettelbrück and Troisvierges during the shutdown.
Extensive summer closures affecting the Luxembourg - Esch/Alzette - Rodange and the Luxembourg - Bettembourg - Thionville lines are still on schedule to end on the 15 September as well, thereby returning the rail network to almost full capacity.

The escape of a murder suspect during an accompanied outing in Ettelbruck in early December has prompted various interventions in the Chamber of Deputies
Last week, MPs Charel Weiler and Jean-Paul Schaaf of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) submitted a parliamentary question to Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue and Minister of Health Martine Deprez
The case has also drawn attention from MPs Fernand Etgen and André Bauler of the Democratic Party (DP)
who addressed a parliamentary question to Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden
Their enquiry focused on the suspect's escape route and whether other "dangerous or convicted" individuals currently placed at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Centre (CHNP) in Ettelbruck might pose "a danger to public safety."
the ministers clarified that the individual in question had never been convicted of a crime and did not escape from the CHNP premises but rather during an accompanied outing
They added that the police were immediately informed
no details about his escape route are available
The ministers also explained that outings at the CHNP are restricted to a secure inner courtyard for individuals deemed "dangerous" or at risk of flight
The suspect at the centre of this case had not been classified as such and was therefore permitted to participate in accompanied outings
Regarding potential changes to the CHNP's security measures
the ministers indicated that any decision would depend on the completion of an assessment of the incident
In addition to these parliamentary questions
MP Dan Biancalana of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) has submitted a requested for a joint meeting of the parliamentary health and justice committees to further question Ministers Deprez and Margue on the matter
The LSAP seeks to address the placement of individuals with mental illnesses
focusing on both public safety and psycho-social considerations
The committees are expected to deliberate on these issues in January
the public prosecutor's office provided further clarification to our colleagues from RTL.lu
explaining that there is no fixed time frame for placement in a psychiatric unit
Individuals under judicial supervision have the right to request discharge
prompting the public prosecutor's office to seek multiple assessments before deciding on continued detention or release
the public prosecutor's office confirmed that a report has been requested to evaluate how such incidents can be prevented during future accompanied outings
The man at the centre of this case is the primary suspect in the fatal stabbing of an elderly man in Ettelbruck in 2015
the Appeals Court's pre-trial chamber deemed the then 27-year-old unfit to stand trial under Article 71 of the Criminal Code
This article exempts individuals from criminal responsibility if
a mental disorder impaired their judgment or self-control
Despite sufficient evidence linking him to two knife attacks
the court instead placed him in a secure psychiatric unit at the CHNP
the man escaped during an accompanied outing and remained at large for 24 hours before being recaptured in Germany

Rail traffic on line 10 between Mersch and Kautenbach was temporarily disrupted on Saturday afternoon
according to the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL)
The disruption was linked to a police intervention at Ettelbruck station
A police spokesperson explained that a patrol stopped an individual on the station platform who was carrying two small gas cylinders
Officers were investigating whether the cylinders contained helium
CFL arranged a replacement bus service between Mersch and Kautenbach
CFL indicated that the incident had been resolved and that train traffic would resume normally during the afternoon

New Jersey) will begin her professional career overseas in Luxembourg
as the 6-2 forward has signed a one-year contract with BBC Etzella Ettelbruck
The New Jersey native has inked a deal with Luxembourg Total League's BBC Etzella Ettelbruck – a club that plays in the highest ranking league in Luxembourg
Guastella is set to depart for the city of Ettelbruck in mid-August where she will begin preseason training
"I am so excited to be playing next season professionally in Luxembourg and can't empress how grateful I am for this opportunity to continue playing the game I love," Guastella said
"After an incredible four years at Quinnipiac
I am excited for a new challenge and new experiences in Luxembourg
I'm so thankful for all that my coaches and family have done to help me become the person and player I am today!"
Guastella graduated from Quinnipiac this past May after a four-year standout career with the Bobcats that included two trips to the NCAA Tournament as well as trips to four straight postseason tournaments
Guastella broke out with a sensational senior campaign wherein she started all 35 games while averaging 12.8 points (44.9 FG%
1.3 assists and 1.0 steals in 25.3 minutes per game
The Bobcats' do-everything forward was the only player in the country to rank in the Top 100 for three-point field goals (2.91; 10th NCAA Div
She also was one of just three players to rank in the Top 20 in three-point percentage (42.0; 14th NCAA Div
I) and three-point field goals (2.91) per game
Guastella finished her career as the all-time leader in Quinnipiac women's basketball history in three-pointers (225) and the QU Div
Named one of three team captains for the 2014-15 season
Guastella's leadership on and off the court played a key role in the Bobcats' transcendent 31-4 campaign
Quinnipiac rolled through the regular season that featured a 21-game winning streak and an undefeated 20-0 conference record on the way to winning the 2015 MAAC Championship
The Bobcats received votes in both national polls (Associated Press
USA Today) while the 31 wins in 2014-15 set a new single-season program record
"It's a great achievement for Sam as well as our program," said Quinnipiac head coach Tricia Fabbri
"Sam's passion for the game was evident when we recruited her and was always on display during her four years at Quinnipiac
The fact that she is able to fulfill one of her dreams to play professional basketball is extremely gratifying
Sam was an integral part of the success we've had over the past four years
I know she will have the same impact on her new team and we wish her all the best!"
Guastella finished with averages of 9.9 points (43.5 FG%
5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while appearing in 123 games throughout her four years

2015) and four trips to national postseason tournaments (2013
Guastella joins a roster coached by Fuger Fabienne that includes American-born small forward Jessilyn Conicelli who was a standout for Biola University in California having last played collegiately in 2010-11
Conicelli leads the Etzella Ettelbruck team in points and rebounds as her 2014-15 state line included 22 points
The nine-player lineup from the 2014-15 Etzella Ettelbruck squad included seven players with Luxembourgish nationality as well as one American and one Bulgarian
Guastella immediately brings depth on the frontcourt for Etzella Ettelbruck as she immediately becomes the tallest player on the roster
is coming off a 21-3 season while claiming the Luxembourg League Regular Season Championship

In response to a parliamentary question from MP André Bauler of the Democratic Party (DP)
Minister of Health Martine Deprez announced that the on-call medical centre ("maison médicale") in Ettelbruck will relocate to a new building in 2026
The new facility will be located within a purpose-built structure spanning 700 square metres at the entrance to Ettelbruck
Similar to the medical centre in southern Luxembourg
it will feature four consultation rooms for general practitioners
These GPs will be available to patients from 8pm to midnight during the week
and from 8am to midnight on weekends and public holidays
The new building is expected to open in approximately one year
at which time the medical centre will transition from its current location in a single-family house on Avenue Salentiny to the modernised premises
The man had endangered himself by repeatedly falling onto the street in Ettelbruck
he indeed was struggling to stay on his feet
Given the man was a danger to himself and others in his condition
he was taken to the drunk tank after a medical examination
The Technical-vocational College for Healthcare Professions (LTPS) in Ettelbrück
has an ambitious objective: to produce more energy than it consumes
taking into account ’grey energy’ – the energy needed for its construction and demolition
The building has been in use since the start of the 2019 academic year
It was selected as a pilot project based on the innovative ‘energy-plus’ concept
An application is being made for the building to obtain the Swiss ‘Minergie-A-ECO’ environmental certification
This project serves as an exemplary model for other public and private projects in Luxembourg
As the number of students increases each year
a new building was needed to house the LTPS
This new building was selected as a pilot project to implement the innovative ‘energy-plus’ concept
which means that it will produce more energy than it consumes over its life cycle
also taking into account the energy required for its construction and demolition
According to data on the Luxembourg Public Works portal
the college covers an area of 8400 m2 and can accommodate 430 students in 16 classrooms and six clinical teaching rooms The academic complex also includes an administrative wing and a multi-purpose room
With a view to minimising ’grey energy’ – the total energy consumed over the building’s entire life cycle – materials were chosen for their energy efficiency and low environmental impact
assembled using a system adapted for the project
The sloping roof has integrated solar panels
Other technical solutions to increase the building’s energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact include interior partitions made of clay panels
advanced thermal insulation and ventilation of the spaces using a hybrid system of fan coils
a thermal rainwater collecting system was installed on the façade and is connected to a reservoir
In addition to sustainability and energy efficiency
This resolutely innovative and ecological approach is reflected in the building’s architecture
into which the solar panels are integrated
The building is perfectly integrated into the wooded surroundings
‘People find it very pleasant to be in the building
particularly because of its thermal and acoustic comfort,’ explains Martine Schmitt
who has closely followed the project on behalf of the Luxembourg Public Buildings Administration
The project was designed with the Swiss ‘Minergie-A-ECO’ certification in mind
which sets very high standards in the construction sector
This certification not only covers energy efficiency and comfort criteria
it also takes into account the use of environmentally friendly materials and prohibits the use of products that are harmful to health
The building has enjoyed international acclaim
It has been awarded several European prizes and been selected for the ‘Mies van der Rohe Award’
which rewards excellence in European architecture
Total investment for the project ‘Technical-vocational College for Healthcare Professions in Ettelbruck’ project was EUR 5 040 000
with the European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 2 016 000 through the ’Luxembourg ERDF’ Operational Programme for the 2014–2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority ‘Promoting a low carbon economy’

Pollution was detected in the Alzette and Sûre rivers on Wednesday afternoon in Diekirch
according to a press release issued by the Water Management Authority on Thursday
Traces of hydrocarbons were observed on the surface of the Sûre
prompting an investigation into the source of the contamination
Officials traced the pollution back to Ettelbruck
where a delivery lorry at the local abattoir had experienced a hydraulic leak
The leaked hydrocarbons entered the river water system
flowing into the Alzette and subsequently reaching the Sûre
a team from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) installed a plug in the affected pipe to contain the spill
The pipe is scheduled to be cleaned on Thursday
the hotel and restaurant Lanners in Ettelbruck closed its doors for the final time on Sunday 14 July
the closure was marked by a distinct tone of sadness
The main reason for the hotel's closure is the ongoing development and construction around Ettelbrucks's train station
Work began in 2017 and is likely to take several more years as it moves through multiple phases of conversion into a multimodal terminal
The hotel's owner said it was not just a case of excessive noise and mess
but the construction work had resulted in a distinct lack of parking spaces in the area
There are also plans to build a new youth hostel over 40 metres tall beside the station
although he feels that regardless of the building
a youth hostel would not fit into the neighbourhood
"Everywhere you look we have problems here
the police are called out to the area two or three times a day for these
You're likely to see eight police vans with officers using batons
Now there are plans to build a youth hostel in a district which is not exactly under control yet."
the proprietor of the hotel would like to tear the building down
Although the municipal council agreed to these plans initially
"After long discussions the plans were rejected by the new mayor who said the plans would build too deep
But this was after the plans were submitted to them five years ago and had even been checked by their technician
But now they say the plans aren't compliant
So I'll shut for good on 14 [July] and we'll see how it goes
Maybe we'll get a second awning here in Ettelbruck."
The municipality says its refusal is due to the fact that the project does not meet building regulations in terms of the planned depth; however
local officials can understand the hotel owner's dissatisfaction
"The construction project that was planned was actually a complete development of the plot and according to the building regulations this is only possible at an existing level
"This was not communicated in the right way at the time
but we have to stick to the rules here as we do for everyone else."
The municipality has registered a bid to buy the property
but neither party has agreed a price to date
The station building works have been subjected to delays over the years
but the mayor highlighted the enormous scale and complexity of the station refurbishment and said it was currently progressing well
there are plans to install CCTV around the station
but the council is also looking at redeveloping the street to make it more urban friendly and colourful
Meteolux has issued an orange weather alert for the entire country
as heavy rainfall and flooding continue to disrupt daily life
Several roads and car parks are already submerged
and water levels in multiple rivers have exceeded the "orange vigilance threshold."
The orange alert, which began at midnight on Thursday, follows a yellow alert issued on Wednesday due to snowfall that caused chaos on Luxembourg's roads and at Findel Airport
The orange alert will remain in place until 6pm on Friday for the North and until 6pm on Sunday for the Moselle region but has been lifted for the South of the country
Meteolux warns that minor flooding could escalate
authorities reported that the Deich car park in Ettelbruck is closed due to flooding
Police urged vehicle owners to remove their cars immediately

The adverse weather has also impacted waste collection services
the intercommunal syndicate responsible for waste management in northern Luxembourg
announced the cancellation of rubbish collections in Troisvierges
These collections have been rescheduled for Friday
Heavy rainfall and late snowmelt have caused water levels in Luxembourg's rivers and streams to rise rapidly
according to the flood monitoring website inondations.lu
The site warned that the orange alert threshold would be exceeded on the Alzette
and Eisch rivers during the night of Thursday to Friday
Elevated water levels are also expected on the Syre
The Alzette is particularly at risk of exceeding the red alert threshold at the Mersch and Ettelbruck monitoring stations
the Water Management Authority confirmed that the orange alert threshold had already been surpassed in Mersch and Ettelbruck
with the Alzette in Ettelbruck nearing the red alert level
The Attert River in Bissen has also exceeded the orange alert threshold
Water levels in the Alzette catchment area are expected to peak by midday or evening
the orange alert threshold has been exceeded in Diekirch
though the red alert level is not anticipated
the orange alert threshold is expected to be surpassed by midday
with the possibility of reaching the red alert level later in the day
water levels in Bigonville are predicted to fall just below the orange alert threshold
The Moselle River was finally placed under orange alert around 6pm on Friday
after spending most of the day at the yellow level
Authorities warn that the water levels on the Moselle will likely keep rising until Saturday morning
but the exact level cannot be predicted as of now

It is indeed the first public building in Luxembourg with positive energy
It is also the first in Luxembourg to aim for a "Minergie-P- ECO" certification
The incident took place around 3.45pm on the B7 between Ettelbruck and Diekirch
Preliminary information indicates that a vehicle crossed into the opposite lane during an overtaking manoeuvre
causing a second car to swerve and collide with a guardrail
The vehicle involved in the incident is believed to be a dark SUV that was heading towards Ettelbruck
The police are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the accident or from the driver of the SUV
Witnesses are asked to contact the Mersch police at (+352) 244 90 1000 or by email at police.mersch@police.etat.lu
The paediatric care department of the Centre hospitalier du Nord (CHdN) has dealt with less than one in five children brought in by emergency services this year
health minister Martine Deprez said on Tuesday in response to a written parliamentary question
The vast majority of patients have instead been redirected to the Kannerklinnik
the paediatric service of the Centre Hospitalier du Luxembourg (CHL) in the capital
At the start of February, the northern hospital had announced a restructuring of its paediatric services, extending its opening hours for young patients without appointments needing non-emergency treatment.
Since then, 1,827 children have been seen at the hospital, Deprez said in response to a separate parliamentary question published last week.
“The on-duty paediatrician decides whether the child can be treated at the CHdN or if it's in the interest of the patient to be transferred to the Kannerklinnik,” she said.
While only the Kannerklinnik serves as the national specialist service for paediatric care, “minor emergencies can be dealt with by the CHdN department as part of its local paediatric service,” Deprez said.
Petitions to the country’s lawmakers have demanded more emergency care units for children, but efforts in 2019 and 2021 failed to gather enough signatures to force a debate in parliament.
One in seven children in Luxembourg needed emergency care annually between 2013 and 2020, the national observatory for health said in a child health report.
Although the density of paediatric hospital beds fell between 2017 and 2021 to 3.9 per 10,000 children, Luxembourg relies on an around-the-clock, on-call medical care system where physicians receive walk-in appointments from children at one of the country’s three medical centres (maisons médicales) in Belval, Luxembourg City and Ettelbruck.

Several new projects are underway at the Ettelbruck train station
a bus station as well as an administrative centre will turn the government’s industrial plans of renovating and expanding Ettelbruck train station into a major social project to benefit the local community and its economy
Ettelbruck's train station is one of Luxembourg’s busiest and most important in terms of passenger traffic
It underwent extensive infrastructure work in 2018 and has seen an increase of 85% in the number of passengers between 2003 and 2019
The development work at the northern train station will see rail works that encompass the construction of a new platform and two additional tracks
considerably increasing passenger capabilities while also providing the flexibility to mitigate possible disruptions of service
Existing platforms will be extended to a length of 340m
while also being widened to a width of 11m
allowing for the accommodation of longer trains
The CFL is also in the process of creating an integrated control system
will simplify lateral signaling and management
centralising elements linked to the European train control system
The railway works at Ettelbruck are expected to be completed in the final months of 2022
And in the spirit of mobility and public works outlined by minister François Bausch “Railways should no longer be an industrial location
a new passenger building is expected to be built in 2026 and a new P&R is also in the works
focus will turn to the construction of a new youth hostel
an administrative centre and a new bus station
The aim of these civil engineering projects
is to attract young tourists to the northern region as well as boost cycle tourism
The new hostel will have 120 beds and its common areas
“multifunctional” rooms as a well as a viewing platform on the 9th floor
The administrative complex will cover an area of 1,200m2 and provide a conference area
The neighbourhood around the Ettelbruck station is home to around a thousand residents
With the work currently underway at the station
the area is set to undergo a metamorphosis between now and 2030

Less attractive than the more elegant historic centre
the fate of the station area is intimately linked to that of the whole city
The creation of a railway station in 1862 contributed to the development of the entire town
Ettelbruck was a village rather than a town in its own right
It was not until 1907 that it achieved this status
the choice of location for the station gave rise to heated debate
“The route of the railway and the need to cross the Alzette made it technically impossible to build the station in the centre of Ettelbruck
the railway line linked Ettelbruck to Ulflingen
linking Ettelbruck to Steinfort and then to Petingen
The first station building was extended in 1876 and a restoration and half-timbered building was added
The station building was extended again in 1914
after the line had been designed with two tracks from 1913 onwards,” according to the municipal archives
in addition to the few shops that keep it lively
the station remains the nerve centre of the district
or around 10.7% of the town’s total population
This makes it more of a commercial district than a residential one
The majority of the population is Portuguese
the neighbourhoods around stations are often synonymous with delinquency
Ettelbruck seems to be spared this phenomenon
the station and what it has to offer are the main assets of the district
“There are trains every 15 minutes or so to Luxembourg
and the district has retained its human side
so you can walk around without any problems
Ettelbruck does’t need to envy other places,” he asserts
The Rue de la Gare will look completely different after the works

The painter and sculptor Michel Weiler was originally from Ettelbruck
A street in the station area bears his name
Part of the Avenue Kennedy runs through the station area
The area is well endowed in terms of shops

A shopkeeper who has been in the area for three years
describes it as “a quiet neighbourhood that bears no comparison with the station area in Luxembourg City.” In terms of commercial life
“It’s not the easiest street for shopkeepers

The work being carried out by CFL and the Roads and Bridges Administration should benefit the whole district
it is being closely watched by residents and shopkeepers
who say they can’t wait to see the results
The aim is to modernise and develop the station into a multimodal interchange worthy of the name
Work has begun and the station already has an additional (wider and longer) platform
while the original platform has been resized
“With the 23 points installed since 2018 and the two additional tracks
which is one of the largest in the country
has optimum flexibility,” noted CFL in its latest activity report
Also planned as part of the works are improved accessibility for people with reduced mobility and a P+R (with around 430 parking spaces)
more modern passenger building and the new bus station
Work at the station is scheduled to last until 2030
Avenue Kennedy is the most densely populated
is a great way to immerse yourself in the history of Luxembourg
But the works will extend beyond the railway infrastructure of the country’s second-largest station
The station square will be redesigned and refurbished
A 350 metre-long tunnel will be created under the station
Avenue Kennedy will see its traffic slow down and the pedestrian area of Rue Prince Henri will be greatly enlarged
“The general plan is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of functions
so that this new strategic location will be able to accommodate a mix of social
commercial and economic functions,” explains the construction dossier
“The Verband project is another key part of this development
It includes not only retail and office space
but also new housing units,” adds the local authority in a recent communication
the station area will become the hub of mobility and creativity
