His family isn’t getting any younger, and time is not slowing down any. His brother, Dominick just took a job working in downtown Chicago Life beyond hockey continued its procession The very nature of playing one level removed from the NHL means that a player’s career takes on a dominant role for a hockey family “Over the summer we were home as a family,” Mersch explained “and just seeing the relationships that my kids had with their aunts and uncles or cousins their friends here in the area…they just had so much going for them it felt selfish of me to pack the bags and move everybody out again.” the decision became quite clear for Mersch He put his family first and announced his retirement this week does leave the ice having crossed off several of the major items on any hockey player’s to-do list the team that made him a fourth-round draft pick He won a Calder Cup as a rookie with the Manchester Monarchs in 2015 That springtime championship charge went so well that Mersch ended up tying for the league in scoring with 22 points (13 goals He was able to play for some of the AHL’s most memorable coaches of the past decade – Mike Stothers in Manchester and Ontario; Derek Laxdal and Neil Graham in Texas; and Seth Appert in Rochester It was in Rochester that Appert and Mersch connected The pandemic had upended the market for pro hockey players just as it had disrupted so much else in the world It had also pushed the start of the 2020-21 AHL season to February Mersch did not have a contract even coming off a solid two seasons with Texas Everything that year and that season started – and remained – in flux across hockey It came one day after the AHL season had started nobody could make any promises that season Hockey and the AHL had to figure out and adjust to ever-changing conditions just as the rest of society did “It wasn’t much of a decision,” Mersch quipped The move quickly paid off for both parties Appert was in his first season in pro hockey that year a career step that is challenging for any coach let alone one trying to step through that season Appert leaned heavily on Mersch on and off the ice Mersch became a fixture in the Rochester lineup someone for Appert to rely on amid external circumstances that offered little to no predictability “It all just kind of meshed well together at the right time,” Mersch said of the decision that eventually led to four seasons in Rochester I bought into what I needed to do to stay playing because I found out pretty quickly it’s not guaranteed.” Mersch secured a new two-year deal with the Amerks that summer Rochester found the success that its fans had long sought Buffalo management came away happy too as Sabres prospects had a chance to experience the Calder Cup Playoffs The team ended up going to the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals and Mersch tied for the team playoff scoring lead with 13 points (six goals 220 of Mersch’s 597 AHL regular-season games came with Rochester He finished his AHL career with 401 points (188 goals Mersch looks at that time in Rochester differently than he may have viewed earlier stages of his career he admits that some of the pressure of fighting for NHL recalls came off him and that is where he could station his focus “I felt like anything from that point on was a bonus,” Mersch said Those four years were probably some of the most fun hockey I’ve had.” A lot will look different in Rochester this fall Several familiar names departed while others have come aboard though he says that he would like to stay in hockey He does plan to make a return trip to Rochester at some point “[I still] go through times where I feel like I’m a hockey player I’ll probably always identify as a hockey player even though I’m not playing professionally anymore.” But for now he can be a full-time husband and dad This summer provided a real taste of what might be On the American Hockey League beat for two decades, TheAHL.com features writer Patrick Williams also currently covers the league for NHL.com and FloSports and is a regular contributor on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio. Understanding that playing professional hockey 600 miles from home was creating disruptions in life for his wife and two young children Mersch will announce his retirement on Monday the team behind his decision is comprised of wife Jenna and sons Mike (3) and Mason (1 ½) as well as their extended family in and around the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge He says it’s time to bring a little normalcy to their lives “To move them away from the situation they have here just because I wanted to play hockey again just didn’t make sense,” Mersch said on Sunday afternoon hockey has been the most important thing in my life But then you have kids and priorities change I’d be in Rochester in training camp right now But my kids trumped everything that I was deciding between.” said he spent a good deal of the summer contemplating his future He said he cherished his time in Rochester but knew it was time to say goodbye to the game so that will always give us strong ties to the community and the city,” Mersch said “But I realized this (Park Ridge) is the best place for them to grow up.” That’s because his parents and Jenna’s parents are right there “I wanted to make sure they were here for those core memories,” he said Mersch leaves the ice after playing 682 games as a pro A fourth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2011 2 assists) and won a Calder Cup with the Kings’ AHL affiliate (the Manchester Monarchs) as a rookie in 2014-15 He played the vast majority of his career in the American Hockey League: 597 regular-season games with 188 goals and another 68 playoff games with 24-26-50 His final 244 games were played with the Amerks He produced 66-90-156 in 220 regular-season games along with 8-7-15 in 24 playoff games That included a hat trick in Game 3 of the 2023 first-round series against Syracuse an 8-5 victory that triggered the stunning “reverse sweep” of the Crunch “There’s a lot of guys that made me look good,” Mersch said He was the captain of a group that energized the city with two electrifying playoff seasons after the franchise had gone 17 years without a playoff series victory the Amerks swept Belleville 2-0 in the mini-round play-in and then upended North Division champion Utica 3-2 in a classic best-of-five series they overcame the 2-0 deficit to oust Syracuse 3-2 and then swept Toronto 3-0 in the division finals before falling in the Eastern Conference finals to eventual Calder Cup champion Hershey in six games “I always tried to appreciate every game and every season because you never know when it will end,” Mersch said “I created so many special memories and relationships in hockey.” where Mersch embraced the heritage of a storied franchise and understood Amerk pride “You realized that the city loves hockey and a lot of people have family memories of watching old Amerk teams win,” Mersch said “That gives you a feeling of pride that the community really cares about the team Hopefully we gave them some of those memories.” One of his own favorite Amerk memories took place in a game that officially didn’t mean anything: a preseason game against Syracuse on Oct The evening became even more special when Dominick assisted on a second-period goal by Michael “I’m very thankful to the organization for that,” he said “They didn’t have to do that but we’ll have those memories forever.” Mersch actually was thinking his career might have been over four years ago when he became an Amerks pretty much as a last resort The COVID-19 pandemic had created havoc with the world and NHL teams were conservative with how they stocked their AHL teams for the abbreviated 2021 season He had no contract offers so he joined the Amerks on a pro tryout contract an organization and a city – and staying for four years how could they not love a guy who enjoyed winning puck battles as much as scoring goals a guy who defined grit and passion through his relentless drive to succeed “Seth and I kind of hit it off and he pushed to have me back (for the 2021-22 season),” Mersch said I was kind of playing with house money.” But he realized over the past summer that it was time to move on “I respect the heck out of the organization,” Mersch said “Seth left them in a spot better than he found it and I think Mike (new coach Michael Leone) is going to do a great job “The leadership core with (Ethan) Prow and (Mason) Jobst and (Brett) Murray and the others I love those guys and I’ll be rooting for them.” Filed Under: Amerks, Pine Pieces, WNY Sports September 29, 2024 at 10:09 pm September 30, 2024 at 10:05 am with Mersch was a true leader and a pleasure to watch play To devote all the effort and energy to this team the last four years were phenomenal I wish him the best as he now puts the same effort into raising his family and starting a new career…… September 30, 2024 at 1:22 pm a true leader & the heart of the team on a team that desperately needs more guys like him it’s totally understandable why he chose to retire but this is a big loss for our favorite team September 30, 2024 at 11:21 pm October 1, 2024 at 2:38 pm I’m surprised he has made the choice to retire I know he wasn’t making NHL money but I think he was doing quite well for a job that allowed him summers off with his family at 32 I think there was more left in the tank He explained quite well his priorities being his young family now as they should be but financial stability is taking care of your family My guess is he must have a solid career lined up for him in his hometown for him to make this choice he had become the face of the Amerks these past 3 years of playoff runs something that had been missing from any 1 player this team has had these past few decades October 4, 2024 at 11:07 pm and Ted: Thanks so very personally: Where are you from I grew up in Germantown and attended Valley View Schools through High School Growing up both my parents practiced their faith and I attended St After graduating with bachelor’s degrees in Theology and English from Ohio Dominican University I worked as a reporter at Miami Valley Newspapers in Miamisburg and attended Our Lady of Good Hope in Miamisburg When did you first begin to discern your calling to the priesthood My first sense of being called to the priesthood began sometime in my Junior High school years There was initially an interior sense of being called to the priesthood that waxed and waned as the years progressed This sense continued during my years in college and during my time in the workforce at a group of local newspapers The Lord confirmed this call by various members of the clergy and laypeople who would either ask me if I was thinking of becoming a priest or would outright tell me they thought I was called to the priesthood Who has been a mentor for you along the way There have been multiple people I would consider mentors along this path my grandparents and extended family as well as my close friends from my years at Ohio Dominican University There are also priests I met during and after my time at college that served as mentors Each of the priests I have worked with during my time in parishes during the summers and during my Internship year have helped form me and prepare me for aspects of the priesthood and human formation to be good and holy priests What are you looking forward to most about being a priest The aspect of the priesthood I am most looking forward to is the opportunity to celebrate the sacraments and walk with others as they grow in sanctity I most especially look forward to the celebration of the Mass and Reconciliation In my conversations with priests they have stated the celebration of Reconciliation is where they have felt strong encounters with the mercy of our Lord as they serve as conduits of this mercy for God’s people Do you have any particular favorite devotions or prayers My favorite devotional prayer has been the rosary as I have felt a close connection to our Blessed Mother as I share a birthday with her While my expected due date was mid-December I was born three-months premature Faustina and the devotion to the divine mercy I have also grown to love the Divine Mercy Chaplet and often pray for the repose of the holy souls in Purgatory Some of my hobbies and favorite activities include hiking relaxing with a good action or suspense movie and visiting car shows I also picked up metal detecting a couple years ago and have found interesting items such as a historic brass spoon and button on family property Anything else you’d like to share with the faithful of our archdiocese I am a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and have met many good Catholic men during my time with the Knights I would also like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude for all those I have met along my path and those who have supported me by their prayers and encouragement The Catholic Telegraph is the official news source of the Archdiocese of Mersch has helped the Amerks go on quite the roll lately during their unlikely march toward the playoffs During their six-game winning streak the team will take into Friday night's game at Blue Cross Arena against the Belleville Senators One more point and a playoff spot will be reserved for them for the fourth consecutive season One more point and the top spot in the North Division will be theirs to share with the Syracuse Crunch Aspirations for the majority of the Rochester Amerks can be found 76 miles away from their home arena in Rochester would rather be playing 75 minute down the road at KeyBank Center with the Sabres He's a 31-year-old left winger with 17 NHL games to his name — the last one eight years ago — and no more likely to come Mersch wasn't sure he'd ever play pro hockey again after COVID shut down the 2019-20 season the last year of his contract with the Dallas Stars Some teams opted to sit out the following season So Mersch returned home to Park Ridge, Ill., just outside of Chicago, and started a hockey school called In Your Face Hockey with his brother who plays in the ECHL and had a two-game stint on loan with the Amerks this season "Surely no teams were looking to sign someone like me," he thought to himself he continued to train as if he were playing which brought Mersch in on a tryout contract for the 2020-21 season Kissed my mom and wife and was out the door." But points are only part of the point when it comes to Mersch's value "Coaches love him. Players love him. Fans love him," Amerks defenseman Jeremy Davies said He went from fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2011 to four years in college at Wisconsin to staring in awe across the ice from Sidney Crosby then defending against him during his NHL debut in Pittsburgh on Dec 29 against Edmonton Oilers goalie Cam Talbot at 5:42 of the second period of a 5-2 Kings victory The first of his two career assists came two days later Michael Mersch' job title these days is captain of the Americans Teammates and coaches stopped just shy of calling him a hockey superhero "We wouldn't be where we have been over the last three years without Mersch being our captain," Amerks coach Seth Appert said "I've coached one game of pro hockey without him "He's emerged as one of the most important Amerks leaders in the last couple of decades I know I'm a way smarter coach when Michael Mersch is my captain." Where the Americans have been the last three seasons include the Calder Cup semifinals last year Besides critical points and plays on the ice "People like to call the AHL a minor league," said Davies who spent 23 games in the NHL with the Nashville Predators and one more with the Sabres you're always looking for a leadership role if someone wants to keep paying you to help younger guys come through Davies said Mersch is someone everyone can talk to — after a tough game after an argument with a significant other "There's so much stuff that goes on throughout a season To have support from guys who have seen it all and been there "It's every young hockey player's dream to play one game in the NHL," Mersch said "Once you get there you always want more." Michael Mersch knows "more" for him more than likely isn't in the cards The man who once was a kid who grew up a Blackhawks fan during the Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews years knows tomorrow doesn't always keep its promises They have a head full of ideas and a crazy desire to make them a reality They are under 40 and represent Luxembourg’s #Nextgen discover the portraits of these 100 women and men who make up the new face of the country In this instalment: Max Mersch of Fabric Ventures “We never stopped believing in our original theory we were always convinced that it was going to work But did we ever doubt that we would be able to raise funds “from the first day I started working in a venture capital fund my aim was to create my own fund and invest in it The aim is to continue for at least the next ten years The venture capital fund specialises in what is known as web3 Fabric Ventures raised €125 million in 2022 Read all 100 #Nextgen portraits in Paperjam’s October 2024 February 16, 2024 by 2 Comments For a significant portion of Friday’s night’s game, the Rochester Americans relied on Devon Levi’s big-save goaltending to keep them in it he made so many big-time saves,” center Tyson Kozak said But after the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins crept within a goal and were applying extra-attacker pressure in the final two minutes the Amerks showed growth as a team by locking it down and scoring the clinching goal into an empty net Michael Mersch bulled his way out of the zone and drove the puck high off the glass in the neutral zone then Linus Weissbach won a footrace for the puck deep into the Penguins zone and hit the empty net 77 seconds remaining to secure a 5-3 victory “It was one of those games where our captain (Mersch) willed us to a win,” Amerks coach Seth Appert said It was also a game where the Amerks may have suffered a significant loss. Leading goal-scorer Jiri Kulich just one shift after ending a career-high 11-game goalless drought He was prone on the ice for a few minutes before needing assistance to get to the bench and down the tunnel to the dressing room Appert said he did not see the hit and had no details of the severity of the injury Kulich’s goal had provided a 4-2 lead with 11:39 remaining The Penguins cut the deficit to 4-3 at 10:12 but the Amerks held on as Levi finished with 41 saves “It was nice to see us close that out,” Mersch said “You see growth as individuals and as a team.” scoring goals in the first and second periods mid-air deflection of Mason Jobst’s point shot gave the Amerks a 1-0 lead 3:09 into the first period His second goal – on a wrister off the rush from the right circle – came 8:46 into the second period and tied the score 2-2 The goals were a welcome sight for both Mersch and the Amerks He had gone six games without a point and had just one goal in his past 11 games seven games have been a little down production-wise.” he plays the body and he’s vocal on the bench “The beauty of Merschie,” Appert said “is he helps you win whether he scores or not.” Like when the Penguins ramped up the late-game pressure with the Amerks clinging to the 4-3 lead Mason Jobst was harassed from behind and was unable to clear the puck out of the Amerks zone powering his way to center and then firing the puck high off the glass on the right wing boards not far enough for icing but to a position where Weissbach could win the race and score into the empty net Merschie’s a winner,” Appert said it wasn’t going to be a dangerous play “And then he’s smart enough to know he’s got Weissy with him on the other wing You don’t know if he’s going to win the foot race but you put Weissy in a foot race and there’s a good chance he’s going to track that down.” It’s not as though Weissbach just needed to beat defenseman Ty Smith to the puck near the end line He needed to get position on Smith in order to play the puck “That was great puck battle win by Weissy,” Appert said “That was not an easy empty-net goal He had to cut the defenseman’s hands off and get inside position to score that goal because obviously they had a lot of pressure on us.” Kozak scored the other goal for the Amerks who improved to 23-16-5-1 while the Penguins dropped to 25-17-6-1 Levi was a significant reason for the “W.” “We weren’t good enough by any stretch and he was excellent especially in the first 30 (minutes),” Appert said physical and put us in some compromised spots and Levi steadied the ship for us.” Filed Under: AHL, Amerks, Pine Pieces, WNY Sports February 17, 2024 at 12:10 am Amerks will have a chance to compete in post season If the Sabres don’t screw this up (not a sure thing by an stretch) Levi will get the playing time he needs to improve his skills rather than sitting on the Sabres bench behind the emerging UPL Levi has been facing a lot of shots lately and we are watching a young goalie succeed under pressure This is where he needs to be at this stage of his career and ultimately he will have a lot more fun facing the pressure of a playoff run rather than getting the odd game for a team thats going nowhere Jiri Kulich finally scored a goal but had to leave with what looked to be some sort of head injury Both he and Rosen have been dead in the water for quite some time (the coach of course isn’t going to say that but their names have been totally missing from the scoresheet for far too long) A rare Saturday night off will be followed by games Sunday and Monday afternoon Two more very important divisional matchups thought the nicknames on the back were too gimmicky and having the PA announcer use the nicknames for the goal announcements was silly but maybe many thought it was cool…just like the overly loud music But overall the near 6,700 in the house were very entertained February 20, 2024 at 8:20 am my fantasy team appreciates the write up and your comment Thanks for visiting The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association announced Cincinnati native Tim Mersch as the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Mersch, a La Salle High School graduate, started coaching in 1988 at Walnut Hills where he spent 18 years as a head coach. feature of the site the Mersch local authority commissioned Jim Clemes Associates and LD Architecten together with Schroeder & Associés and Goblet Lavandier & Associés to design the Mierscherbierg sports campus which acts as a new gateway to the town of Mersch The campus is located between two major roads but can also be reached by soft mobility routes The sports campus comprises both indoor and outdoor facilities Particular attention has been paid to creating a strong green environment conducive to physical activity while promoting biodiversity in an urban environment The landscaping has been designed with input from MDL The main building houses the climbing gym and the large sports halls The climbing tower acts as an emblematic element of the project and is a signal both from the N7 and from the motorway The architectural language of this building uses a diamond-shaped mesh that stylistically evokes the sport of climbing the Place des Sports serves as a connection point between the various functions of the campus The square provides access to the main building the various sports courts or the parking areas The new tennis club comprises four indoor courts built around a central clubhouse and two outdoor courts A refreshment room is located on the first floor with a terrace overlooking the outdoor courts natural light is favoured for all the interior spaces and the openings are strategically positioned to encourage natural lighting and blur the boundaries between inside and outside The buildings also follow the natural slope of the land by introducing split levels Each major function is placed on a pedestal so that it is easily identifiable and legible All the functions are arranged in such a way as to offer an adaptable a lawn for outdoor exercise and fitness stations The natural feel of the site is reinforced The landscape strategy consists of green massifs on the slopes particularly by reducing noise pollution from the motorway A water retention basin is also integrated into the landscape to manage rainwater External circulation is designed to facilitate access for a large number of visitors a silo car park is planned on the other side of the N7 The new campus is accessible to people with reduced mobility the circular economy is at the heart of the design such as local wood and recycled steel for the framework This approach helps to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the project The approach will also aim to use reusable materials from other deconstruction projects in and around the municipality The climbing gym is one of the key attractions of the new campus The main building contains several multi-sports halls This article was written in  for the  supplement of the  issue of  The content is produced exclusively for the
