But the US troops did not avoid clashing with the German arms as they arrived in the Grand Duchy, Niederkorn says. “There was still a Wehrmacht rear guard on the border at Petange,” he explains. “They had prepared some fortifications, so small battles took place. An American armoured reconnaissance vehicle was hit by anti-tank guns.” The first American casualty to fall in this battle was Lieutenant Hyman Josefson, age 35. A memorial “September 9, 1944 - We will never forget” in Pétange is dedicated to him. Karl Schöner, a 24-year-old Viennese serving in the German army, was also killed in Petange on 9 September 1944. He had allegedly disobeyed orders to retreat. One such victim was 16-year-old Jean Junck, who died in Pétange after being “hit by bullets from the American air force, which thought it was targeting a German”. Niederkorn estimates that at least 50 people died in Luxembourg in connection with the conflict between 9 and 11 September. “The obituaries published in the Luxemburger Wort at the time are a good basis for research, even if not everyone published them. In almost 50% of cases, [the death] was an accident, such as children coming into contact with ammunition or grenades.” Fighting also took place on 9 and 10 September between American and German tanks around Dippach and Bertrange. “The Americans' objective was to protect the bridges over the Alzette,” Niederkorn says. 10 September is considered to be the date of the country's liberation, when American troops entered the capital. In Cessange, four people, including two children, were killed by mines as they tried to unblock a tunnel to help the Americans. The Luxemburger Wort of 12 September 1944 reported the event as follows: “During their retreat, the German soldiers had barricaded the tunnel-like subway with around 30 spruce trunks, an overturned lorry and iron bars on the Cessange side. “When the Germans withdrew, the people of Cessange wanted to get ahead of the American troops and remove the barricade before they arrived. They had already removed the iron bars and were about to raise the truck when a mine suddenly exploded.” The newspaper reported that the accident left four people dead and several injured. “This incident is another serious reminder to laymen not to interfere in military matters, but rather to leave it to the competent specialists, who have the necessary experience and prudence,” the Wort said. But was it complicated for the Americans to reach Luxembourg City? “Not really. But the Germans had blown up the bridges over the Alzette at Walferdange, Mersch and Beggen. The bridges between Petange and Luxembourg remained intact, which is why German tanks were positioned just before the capital to slow down the American advance,” Niederkorn explains. “The Germans then blew up all the bridges along the Moselle to prevent the Americans from entering the Reich, but the Allies managed to cross the border at Stolzembourg,” he adds. After the liberation, the Luxembourg state had to be rebuilt. Luxembourg army officers were in charge of this mission, and worked with the Civil Affairs branch of the American army. “Once the territory had been liberated, they reorganised the administrative structures and looked for people they could trust, including former mayors. At least those who knew the territory or were working with the resistance to organise the provisional state.” The next day, 11 September, the Luxemburger Wort ran the headline: “Letzebuerg ass frei!” (Luxembourg is free) and a subheadline proclaiming that “the first Americans are here”. “The freedom that was brutally taken from us on 10 May 1940 is here again”, the paper wrote. In its edition of the following day, the daily went into more detail about the liberation of the Grand Duchy: “It would hardly have been thought possible that the advance towards Luxembourg and beyond could have taken place at such a frenetic pace. And yet it is a fact, a gratifying fact, a fact that made people happy.” After the capital, the liberation continued in the north with the arrival of American troops the following day in Diekirch across the Ficellsbréck. “Once the Americans had arrived on 11 September at around 11am, a parade was organised from the station to the Place Guillaume, next to the church, with a speech by the new mayor,” Niederkorn says. no Luxembourg soldiers took part in the liberation of the Grand Duchy “But we recently discovered from photos that Jules Dominique (a gendarme before the war) was part of the parade during the liberation of Diekirch.,” Niederkorn says It was made up of people who had joined the Resistance.” scenes of lynching also occurred in Luxembourg the enraged population took their anger out on the collaborators who had stayed for example by making them wear German helmets It is estimated that they numbered 10,000 people,” Niederkorn says A Luxembourg resistance fighter became the first victim during the liberation of Diekirch when he was shot by a collaborator as he and his colleagues arrested the man "The liberation was a relief for the country but they did not know that the Germans were going to return in December,” Niederkorn says Colas Behm was five years old when Diekirch was liberated he still has a few memories of that period my mother had knitted a red lion on a jumper “We also went to meet the Americans to get chewing gum and chocolate These are things you don’t forget,” he says Behm went to see the Americans staying near the church “We used to tease them until they gave us a jeep tour of Diekirch “I remember that some Luxembourgers had collaborated with the Germans by spying on those who listened to the British [radio broadcasts] These imprisoned collaborators were forced to march in a procession with the Luxembourg flag,” he adds When the Wehrmacht returned during the Battle of the Bulge (December to January) the Behm family was forced to flee their home town “There was fighting in Diekirch and before Christmas because my father was born there,” he says (This article was first published by Virgule. that tremendously The pair dovetailed for UTP’s first goal this Sunday before Steinmetz took centre stage with two assists Fuss made it a brace for himself while even goalkeeper André Barrela chipped in with an assist for winger Ali Dalil We have seen teams start a season in seemingly perfect shape before losing their mojo and even straying close to relegation early signs indicate that Ribeiro’s tweaks are sustainable enough to keep the Pétangeois safe this year despite their shoestring budget Once Union announced they would not be succeeding in their attempt to extend Kakoko’s contract The most mooted destination was the professional world It struck many by surprise to see capital club Racing Luxembourg announce Kakoko’s signature in the summer After a few years of emphasising youth on and off the pitch it seems like the cash is finally in place for RFCUL to build on those foundations and strengthen the team with a few proven successes Yann Mabella and António Pina Gomes arrived from Germany and Belgium respectively Both have enjoyed fruitful spells in the Grand Duchy before who returns to the country on loan from Ligue 2 club Amiens after a year in Pétange The young Frenchman can also be deployed in a number of positions The final two pieces of the puzzle were Moussa Seydi and Néstor Monge both coming from some of Racing’s fiercest BGL Ligue rivals in Hesper and Differdange Romain Ruffier’s homecoming as a player/sporting director meant the replacement of Hugo do Rego in goal was also conducted swiftly All signs pointed in a positive direction looking at the deals the club made over the transfer window and the results have followed a similar pattern RFCUL remain one of only four teams to record an unbeaten month this season While the other three were widely tipped as title favourites Overtaking any of the established top four is no small task UNA Strassen can also count on the UEFA prize money from the summer to stake a claim for a fifth place at the top tables Whether Racing can defy all odds and go for a European place is not necessarily the real question here If they can stay dangerous and sharp all the way until May the domestic cup also offers them a chance to show off against the elite in a one-off battle but Racing have fared well at such battles lately Conceding 10 goals (2.5 per game) and scoring 4 in your first four outings would normally tell you you have some major issues to sort out in your defence even if there seems to be no problems on the attacking front There is one big caveat to the above: Wiltz scored all their four games in their chaotic first-round 4-3 win over newly-promoted Hostert and have let in 7 without a response since the only area they can confidently call themselves stronger than others in terms of names with Luxembourg internationals Ralph Schon and Kévin Malget proving instrumental to the team’s solid defensive foundations in recent seasons also plays as a holding midfielder and often succeeds at keeping the opposition at bay Last year’s slump was the first sustained underperformance in David Vandenbroeck’s tenure at the helm since he was appointed in October 2021 While the manager failed to stop the rot in the spring thanks to some truly horrible season endings to some of the teams below them on the table the same old story continued all over again when the first ball was kicked on 4 August humiliating losses to UNA Strassen and Racing Luxembourg set the tone for the new low the Northerners hit last week when they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Fola Esch Both Fola’s squad and their finances lag far behind everyone in the division and would hardly be competitive enough for the second division Stefano Bensi’s team have mastered how to pick their moments and turn those cagey draws against fellow sloppy teams into the narrow wins they need to eke out a relegation play-off at the very least Their attacking edge left much to be desired despite having Nawfel Saïdi and Benjamin Romeyns two talented and prolific strikers on the pitch from kick-off Nothing seemed to go the Éislek team’s way yet again and Pape Diakhité rubbed salt in the wound by scoring the decider from Evann Mendes’ assist shortly before the final whistle Beating Hostert was the sort of result Wiltz are expected to achieve if they are to meet their primary objective for 2024/25 which is a calm season away from relegation trouble losing to a rag-tag Fola team and failing to score a single goal for 282 minutes and counting are not the steps needed to ensure that aim The local council adviser Jean-Pierre Ecker announced his resignation due to health-related reasons This development follows other recent changes within the Pirate Party, including the former MP Ben Polidori's defection to the LSAP a man was spotted attempting to open the doors of parked cars along Rue de Reckenthal in Strassen Police were alerted and swiftly dispatched to the scene They located the suspect at the intersection of Rue de Reckenthal and Rue de Luxembourg A report was filed on the orders of the prosecutor's office A car parked on Rue Jean Waxweiler in Pétange was stolen during the night from Sunday to Monday The thief was caught in the act by the car’s owner but managed to escape with stolen cash a man was robbed of his mobile phone near the central train station in Luxembourg City the suspect threatened the victim with violence before taking the phone and a report was issued at the prosecutor's request The location for the temporary exhibition is fitting and appropriate: the municipality of Pétange lies on the border with France and Belgium and was where Allied troops first gained access onto Luxembourgish territory commencing the end of the four-year occupation of the Grand Duchy The exhibition will be at the former site of the Lycée Technique Mathias Adam in a large tent and will tell the story of the liberation over the 950 square metre space ranging from independence celebrations in 1939 through to the invasion and the eventual liberation and Battle of the Bulge Organised by the municipality of Pétange and the 'Remembrance committee' you don't happen Jonathan Aubry had an altercation with a security agent in the nightclub on 23 December His head was so badly injured that he died on the spot Family and friends criticise the affair for dragging on too long says that she no longer has a life and is irritated about the justice system's failure to clarify the matter "I don't think things are progressing at all We have very little information about the investigation but I have a lot of doubts because there are few answers and there is little movement." The nightclub's security agent was arrested in the first instance, but was released a few days later under conditions the judiciary stated that the investigation is still ongoing the municipality of Pétange withdrew the extension of the closing time to 6 am a few extensions were authorised until 3 am we then dropped the late extended licensing hours altogether We are now reintroducing extended licensing hours on the condition that the club introduce a series of measures that were agreed upon in discussions with the police the nightclub's licensing hours will be extended again The measures to be implemented are already familiar from other nightlife venues: we might want to use cameras to see when people come in and conduct body checks to see if they're not armed Then also we need to make sure that people aren't served too much alcohol because fights usually break out when people are drunk." The municipality believes that, in general, the risk of incidents is lower when there are no late-night events. However, this does not always guarantee a quiet evening. On Sunday 2 August 2020, at around 8.55pm, he was involved in a fight in Pétange. Several men, including one armed with a knife, had clashed in the town centre. The altercation was filmed According to Europol Pulti stabbed two individuals several times One of the two victims was hit in the abdomen and was seriously injured A European and international arrest warrant was issued for him in January 2021 Faïza Aubry-Bouraï was left reeling by the news of her husband's death in December but was released from pre-trial detention on 29 December "I was absolutely devastated when my brother told me Faïza says she knew Jonathan for half her life "Now it feels like half of me is missing." They say they have faith in the judicial authorities and the investigation should be allowed to continue. Last month, the nightclub's owner revealed they had received threats via social media and had offered condolences to the victim's family RTL contacted the nightclub through their lawyer but the establishment has declined to comment until the autopsy results are published with further details The public prosecutor's office has also declined to inform the media of new developments in the case writing that "a full judicial police investigation is underway." The event, which was organised by Pétange Commune and the Syndicate d'Initiative, celebrates all things Rockabilly, from the hairdos, to the music, the clothes to the cars popular in the US in 1950s and '60s. Visitors to the free, open-air festival who did not come prepared could buy the look as stalls sold all the Rockabilly clothes and shoes needed to kit them out. To add to the vibe, there was also an extensive display of Buick, Chevrolets and Mustangs from the 1950s and '60s for car enthusiasts to admire up-close. And, being an American festival, there were American beers on offer, as well as cocktails and popular American foods like burgers, hot dogs and muffins. Finally, a Rockabilly event would not be complete without music from the era and the festival had four live bands, two from Belgium, “Le Shed” and the “Fuel Kings”, “Cousin Harley” from Canada and “Restless” from the UK. Now in its fourth edition, the festival was borne out of a desire to pay tribute to the US troops stationed in Luxembourg during WWII. “The idea came about from a regular commemoration of the landing of US troops in the area at the end of the Second World War,” explained organising committee member Romain Metzler, adding: “The arrival of troops had been commemorated every year in September in Pétange, until five years ago when the idea came about of modernising the commemoration with a celebration of all things American and so the idea of Rockabilly was born.” Mr Metzler said that the festival is not “about making money,” but more about celebrating the Rockabilly tradition and offering a “fun day out and a good atmosphere”. In terms of the popularity of the Rockabilly scene in Luxembourg, Mr Metzler believes the scene is more popular in Belgium, hence the two Belgian bands present, however, he said it is growing in Luxembourg and the proof could be seen in the many visitors in attendance dressed in Rockabilly attire for the festival. Looking to the future, Mr Metzler hoped to see the festival continue to grow in popularity. “The current set-up is a good one that works and is popular with visitors. There is plenty of hard work that goes into getting it ready, like finding sponsors and bands who can attend, but the hard work pays off when we see a great event like this.” the police reported on Saturday morning that an altercation occurred around 3 a.m several people gathered in a parking lot near the Champs Élysées nightclub Police say that one of the individuals was seriously injured by a stab wound Anyone with useful information regarding this event is asked to contact the Esch-sur-Alzette police station Investigators can be reached by telephone (+352 244 50 1000) via 113 or by email (police.esch@police.etat.lu) The two imposters are described as men wearing dark-coloured uniforms. One is described at 1.65 metres tall, the other about 1.75 metres and of stocky build. The suspects were both seen to be driving a gold-coloured Renault Modus with French number plates. Anyone who sees the false officers or is able to provide any clues as to their identity is asked to immediately call the emergency number 113. Around 200 former students gathered at the site in Pétange, including Claude Meisch, Minister for Education, Childhood and Youth, as well as Higher Education and Research. The alumni had also brought a banner to say thank you for the memories and good times they had at the school. The building has been lying vacant for several years, since the LTMA moved to a new campus in Lamadeleine. There is an additional building in Differdange. Constructed in 1968, the school welcomed students for some 40 years. The future of the old site is not yet clear, with plans for social housing or a music school under consideration. The LTMA is named after Luxembourg teacher Mathias Adam, who was instrumental in making primary school education for children aged 6 to 12 obligatory in 1881. Adam co-founded the Luxembourg teachers' association and worked as an editor and writer for several magazines specialised in the field of education. Organisers of the Pétange Cavalcade considered the event a real success the group's preparation work was rewarded by a big audience A total of 1,400 people made their way across the five-kilometre stretch in Pétange and a staggering six tonnes of candy were distributed over the course of only three hours Even though carnival festivities are known to help people take their minds off serious matters there were also activists drawing attention to the war in Ukraine They expressed gratitude for all the support the country has already received The girl was on a train between Luxembourg and Petange when the man touched her inappropriately the victim was able to get to safety and informed a person at the station The suspect broke free and fled in the direction of Boulevard J.F the suspect was caught by a station security guard and handed over to police The images of the tornado remain vivid in people's memories Although weather forecasts predicted storms on the night in question nobody expected such severe disturbances: broken power poles and trees The tornado hit both Pétange and Bascharage with all its power The path of destruction remains significant nevertheless with around 100 people no longer being able to sleep at home and in need of accommodation elsewhere and even the Luxembourg Army worked tirelessly at the scene after the storm explained the following morning that additional support was provided by French emergency services during the night The most pertinent safety measures were all taken as quickly as possible to eliminate any further repercussions from the destruction which were launched the day after the storm Meteolux later released details on the nature of the tornado which was classified with an F2 level intensity by the European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL) Wind velocity ranged between 180 and 250 km/h The tornado moved 14 kilometres in total across a wide-spread area The storm was triggered by a so-called "supercell" which formed in France above Reims and then moved towards the Grand Duchy Several houses have received a fresh paint job the owners still struggling to find a solution with insurance companies Dominique and Guy Peters lived in their house for 23 years which was rendered inhabitable by the storm Although they first believed that a solution could be found quickly repairs on their home have only recently started More than one million in donations were received by the municipalities over the past months over 600,000 euros having already been assigned Family Peters in Rue Neuve has yet to receive their share Out of the 30 severely damaged houses in Pétange Condolences have accumulated at his football club Nuno was a passionate football player and a student at the Lycée technique Mathias Adam (LTMA) On Wednesday evening, the outpouring came via messages from friends and family, including on the Facebook page of his football club, Union Titus Pétange (from the merging of FC Titus Lamadelaine und CS Pétange), where hundreds of condolence messages had been posted. The club has selected a black ribbon as its profile image, a way to highlight the pain experienced by the club. Although the exact circumstances of the death are still unclear surrounding Nuno, it is hoped Thursday's autopsy may reveal more information. The smoke damage at the building in Place du Marché was thought to have been caused some time between 10pm on March 20 and 6am on March 21. As well as serving as a local police outpost, the building also houses administrative offices for a home help service and the local tax office. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Luxembourg Police on 113.
