The work at Rodange involved extending and making the platforms accessible
as well as creating a new one to differentiate the lines and avoid a domino effect in the event of delays
The modernised Rodange station was inaugurated on Tuesday 17 September
The work was made necessary by a sharp rise in passenger numbers
but also to create a “regional hub” for mobility
like the one at Mersch inaugurated last year
CFL inaugurated Rodange station on Tuesday 17 September
following a major modernisation project launched in mid-2019
The work involved renewing seven tracks and 18 railroad switches in order to separate train operations on the two lines: Luxembourg-Esch/Alzette-Rodange on the one hand
and Luxembourg-Bascharage-Sanem-Rodange-Athus/Longwy on the other
An additional track has also been built for the Luxembourg-Esch/Alzette-Rodange line
to avoid trains from different lines crossing and thus limit the domino effect in the event of delays
“The overhaul of the country’s main stations will also make it possible to modernise all the rail facilities
untangle the entry and exit of trains from different lines in the stations
and gain greater flexibility in the operation of trains
particularly at peak times,” points out the director of infrastructure management
the three platforms have been adapted and lengthened to accommodate longer trains (up to nine carriages)
which will gradually increase our seating capacity by 46%,” adds CFL director general
the aim was also to give the Rodange station a multimodal dimension
designed to cohabit with other mobility solutions
which opened in April 2023 (with nearly 1,600 spaces); a car-sharing station; two bike-boxes (32 spaces); and a taxi service
“An underground passageway to the east of the station has been created to complement the western passageway
which has been renewed to provide access to the P+R
and in anticipation of the connection to the future district being developed around the Rue de l’Industrie special development plan at Rodange station
to provide barrier-free access to the platforms,” says the CFL
The underground passageway has been renewed
The P+R can be reached via the underground passage
“We are delighted to welcome the local population and commuters from across the border to this new version of Rodange station
with services that match our corporate strategy
which is designed around the needs of our customers,” added the CFL boss
The inauguration took place in the middle of European Mobility Week
“And we are proud to be developing new mobility hubs on a regular basis
After inaugurating the Mersch interchange in 2023
it is now at Rodange that we are sending out a new strong signal to encourage multimodality in everyday life
an intelligent combination of individual transport and public transport in a context of imperative reduction of carbon emissions linked to mobility.”
It is a decision that has only been welcomed on one side of the border
a reception centre for asylum seekers is currently under construction
in Longlaville – the French municipality neighbouring Rodange – Auguste Colantonio
discovered the project without ever being informed
positioned right by the border for three decades
now seems hemmed in by a project he knew nothing about
once part of Luxembourg’s customs infrastructure
is being transformed into a centre for international protection applicants
a three-storey building will soon rise – all without any consultation of the French side
Colantonio explained that there had even been attempts to encroach onto land belonging to Longlaville and onto his own property
He recalled a visit from Luxembourgish officials and an architect but said he was never properly informed about the project
He believes that if he had not been paying close attention
he could have lost part of his land without realising it
he voiced deeper concerns about the risk of his property losing value and the potential impact of the construction work on his home
the heavy machinery has caused his house to shake significantly
acknowledge that the authorities handled one aspect correctly by sending an expert to assess any potential damage
including taking photographs inside his house
He confirmed that his municipality had never been officially notified of the plans
placing a major building like a reception centre right on the border was not a minor matter
and he was surprised that no one had reached out to discuss it
Toudma added that he found it particularly astonishing
given the good relationship he has long maintained with his Luxembourgish counterparts
including regular communication with the mayor of Pétange
He explained that he had only learned about the construction through local residents
prompting him to contact the sub-prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle
The lack of information has not only created tension but has also fuelled the spread of fake news and rumours within the municipality
which Toudma described as a persistent headache for him as mayor
Toudma pointed out that efforts had been made for years to improve the image of the border area
which had long suffered from a negative reputation due to its ageing petrol stations and rundown buildings
He stressed that their focus had always been on promoting shared projects
and encouraging dialogue – none of which had happened in this case
and Reception of Refugees confirmed that a reception centre for international protection applicants was under construction on Route de Longwy in Rodange
They explained that the project was a joint initiative between the National Reception Office (ONA) and the municipality of Pétange
The ministry stated that the site had been selected to meet the growing need for asylum accommodation
citing the availability of land and the proximity to existing infrastructure as key factors
they have not disclosed any further information regarding the project’s completion timeline or the number of refugees who will eventually be housed there
While the decision was made in line with Luxembourg’s broader public interest
it has reignited tensions across the border
it is the lack of communication that remains an issue
France had always made an effort to inform its neighbours – Belgium and Luxembourg – whenever similar developments took place
uncertainty continues to hang over the project on the French side

SharePassengers hoping to take a direct TGV link from Rodange to Paris on Sunday were left frustrated when the train was cancelled at the last minute
The delays had nothing to do with Friday’s coordinated sabotage attacks on the TGV network, including the signal box at Pagny-sur-Moselle, located a few kilometres from Metz, SNCF said.
The Rodange connection to the French capital was being launched as a replacement for the direct link from Luxembourg City. Work at Bettembourg station has led to its temporary closure until 11 August. The direct train leaves Rodange at 15:48 every day.
Last week, work started on sliding into place the new bowstring bridge that will replace the Emile Hammerel bridge at the station in Bettembourg. The station is scheduled to reopen for trains on 11 August, but the 1,300-tonne bridge will not open to road traffic until next year.
The building site is among the exceptions to the construction sector’s 26 July to 18 August collective holiday that were granted by the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines, under the authority of the Ministry of Labour.

The operation involved significant resources but was efficiently managed
The construction work will be carried out in several phases during the first half of November
Train movements will either be adapted or completely interrupted
Users of train line 70 will experience some disruption until 13 November due to work to replace crossties on the tracks
Train movements will be adjusted accordingly
There will also be total disruption to traffic between Luxembourg and Athus/Longwy
Passengers on the Lorraine corridor could also be affected
After a summer of disruption on line 90 of the Sillon Lorrain
the users of line 70 have been obliged--since 1 November--to cope with changes to their journey to and from work
The cause: crosstie replacement work on the Luxembourg-Dippach/Reckange-Rodange-Athus and Longwy lines
The CFL is taking advantage of part of the school holiday period to replace the concrete crossties that ensure the stability of the rails
Those installed on this train line “no longer meet the required quality standards.” The CFL will be replacing them over an eight-kilometre stretch
following an analysis of the section which led to the conclusion that there were manufacturing defects in the sleepers.” The work will be carried out in several phases
“taking into account the availability of the necessary equipment.”
passengers will have to take a replacement bus
Traffic will be completely disrupted between Luxembourg and Pétange via Dippach-Reckange
Pétange and Lamadelaine wishing to travel to the capital will be able to use trains on the Luxembourg-Esch-Rodange line
Between Bascharage-Sanem and Luxembourg and vice versa
there will be two replacement buses per hour
two trains will run every hour between Rodange and Athus

there will be three trains in the morning and three in the evening
7.20am and 8.20am in the Longwy-Rodange direction
5.32pm and 6.32pm in the opposite direction
Traffic will once again be completely disrupted on the Luxembourg- Dippach/Reckange-Athus and Luxembourg- Dippach/Reckange-Longwy lines
and replacement buses will be provided by the CFL
The CFL has also announced that some trains to and from Thionville will be cancelled in order to “optimise traffic on the Bettembourg-Luxembourg section
which is particularly busy.” An extra train will be provided during rush hour on the Luxembourg-Esch-Rodange route to accommodate passengers from Pétange

ING in May announced plans to exit mass retail banking in Luxembourg. The decision to close the three branches, which have operated as appointment-only branches since 2021, was “supported by an analysis of client visits to ING branches performed over several months,” the bank said on Thursday.
The bank said that it had discussed the closure of the three branches with representatives of trade unions Aleba and LCGB in a meeting on Tuesday.
The unions during a press conference after the meeting did not comment on the closure of bank branches, with Jean-Jacques Rieff of Aleba telling the Luxembourg Times on Thursday that ING had asked the unions to not disclose the information at their press conference.
“As they had to inform their customers prior to this closing, we agreed to keep this confidential at that moment in time. The reaction of ING management now shows us, that mutual trust between social partners is not respected. Please note as well that neither Aleba nor LCGB approved the closure of the three branches. We were simply informed about that,” Rieff said.
The seven employees working in the impacted branches will now move to the bank’s other locations.
“The overall number of visits was limited, and ING is convinced that client needs will be better served in its remaining branches by personal bankers and/or via the contact centre,” ING Luxembourg said.
All clients impacted by the branch closures are being informed in writing and alternatives are being provided, ING said. “Clients have access to their accounts and can perform their banking operations via My ING.”
The bank in May said it would offload around half of its 90,000 mass retail clients.
“No new wave of client account closures planned,” said Thursday’s press statement. In an email to the Luxembourg Times earlier this week, ING had said that the account closure process is “following its natural pace, and we are seeing a steady number of account closures every week.”
The bank has not, despite repeated requests for information, provided details on how many accounts it has closed so far, how many it still plans to close and the future of its employees in the retail division.
“We are aware of the importance of clear communication and direct engagement with our clients and stakeholders regarding the repositioning of our bank,” said Michael Burch, CEO of ING in Luxembourg.
Earlier this week, trade unions after a meeting with ING during a press conference said that no job losses are foreseen “for the moment.” The unions also slammed the bank’s lack of communication with staff and clients.

The Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) has announced significant adaptations and cancellations on its rail network between 14 March and 4 April due to the replacement of approximately 20 points along the line connecting Luxembourg City and Pétange
no trains will operate on the Luxembourg City – Käerjeng/Sanem – Rodange – Athus or Longwy routes over three weekends: 15–16 March
ensuring all towns normally served by trains remain accessible
an alternative train service will be available on specific dates: 14 March
Travellers from Longwy will have access to direct connections via Esch-sur-Alzette at 5.46am and 6.20am
trains will continue to run between Rodange and Esch-sur-Alzette
the Rodange–Esch–Luxembourg City line will receive additional services during this period
This adjustment should allow travellers from Athus to reach Luxembourg City without major inconvenience
though the journey may take approximately 20 minutes longer than the usual route through Käerjeng
substitute buses will also operate on these days

The Lycée Michel Rodange in Luxembourg has undergone a major renovation and extension project. (Photo: Eric Chenal)
The Lycée Michel Rodange has been under construction since 2017. The extensions, renovations and energy upgrades were officially inaugurated on Monday 26 September. The work has resulted in a modern high school that still preserves the authenticity of its 1970s architecture.
With more than 1,500 students, the Lycée Michel Rodange in Luxembourg (LMRL) is the most populous national classic high school. However, the students were housed in a typical 1970s building that needed a thorough renovation, as well as extensions to meet the school's needs.
One of the major challenges of the project was to respect the original architecture. The Lycée Michel Rodange is housed in a building originally designed in 1970 by the architect Laurent Schmit on the new "Geeseknäppchen" campus. Its construction was carried out in three stages and followed the rapid growth of the school: in 1971, the central wing was completed, followed in 1972 by the north wing and the gymnasium and then the south wing in 1975.
Initially designed to accommodate 1,200 students, the school was quickly overcrowded. Annexes had to be built to make up for the lack of classrooms. However, as the building aged and the school's success continued, it became necessary to upgrade the building.
The aim of the work was to allow for a renovation that would respect the substance of the original building and enhance several typical elements of the period, including the façade with its particularly successful proportions. The building was distinguished at the time by its innovative approach, including the use of prefabricated concrete. The school is defined by its "Plattenbau" construction, i.e. the facade walls are connected to the ribbed slabs on concrete pillars.
The historic building dates from the 1970s. (Photo: Eric Chenal)
The old classrooms were stripped of their old false ceilings. (Photo: Eric Chenal)
This meticulous intervention in relation to the existing building also made it possible to save on construction materials and to preserve a maximum of grey energy. Architecturally interesting elements have been maintained and restored, and only where necessary have any elements been replaced or added.
This is the case for all the insulation, technology and roofs, which had to be reviewed. Circulation also had to be redesigned to better serve different areas of the school, including the new buildings, and to allow the access for people with reduced mobility throughout the establishment thanks to the introduction of new lifts.
False ceilings were removed in the old classrooms to reveal the original ribbed concrete ceilings. This simple gesture provides a new look at the building's construction system and to take advantage of the thermal inertia that concrete offers.
High openings were added to the wall adjoining the corridor, allowing natural light to circulate more freely into the heart of the building.
All the windows were replaced and insulation was added from the inside, thus avoiding direct intervention on the external façade.
From an energy point of view, natural ventilation is applied systematically. The air enters through the openings in the façade, passes through the openings on the corridor side and escapes through the chimney effect to the roof openings in the stairwells. In the new construction, the façade ensures that the air enters and leaves through motorised openings. This ventilation is combined with night cooling and increased sun protection.
The new façade is clearly visible as such thanks to its contemporary design. (Photo: Eric Chenal)
Natural ventilation is favoured throughout the building. (Photo: Eric Chenal)
A new buildingHowever, the intervention in the existing building was not sufficient to meet the various needs of the school. A new extension was necessary and had to fit in with the existing buildings on the site. A new building was constructed at the bottom of the plot, to accommodate the sports hall, multi-purpose room and the cafeteria.
To this end, the entrance hall was significantly redesigned, with the introduction of a new walkway providing direct access to the cafeteria and library.
In order to reduce the visual impact of the new building, it is semi-subterranean, thus offering a large interior volume without imposing too much presence on the outside.
All the roofs have been reworked to improve insulation. The new roofs are treated with extensive and intensive planting. There is even a small educational garden and a beehive. In addition, photovoltaic panels have been installed to produce part of the electricity needed to run the building.
The choice of interior colours is based on the colours already present in the historic architecture and contributes to a warm atmosphere. Wherever possible, special furniture and equipment was removed, stored and reinstalled once the work is completed.
The surroundings were not forgotten and were also given a new look. The latter, carried out in collaboration with the Carlo Mersch landscaping office, are part of a new general concept for the entire campus. Sealed surfaces are gradually being replaced as much as possible by green surfaces and new plantings, while integrating a more legible path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Police were called to an attack that took place on Avenue Dr Gaasch in Rodange, where two men attacked their victim with tear gas before stealing their backpack. the police were not able to find the suspects during their search efforts, so the investigation is still ongoing.
Separate from the incident in Rodange, the police attended to a knife attack in Rue de la Poste in the city centre. A person was wounded with a knife and the attacker fled the scene. The victim was admitted to hospital after receiving medical assistance and their injuries are not life-threatening. An investigation into the incident has also been put into place.

Claude Meisch presents the newest edition of Michel Rodange’s literary work. Photo: Luxembourg
Dotted around Luxembourg’s landscapes and visual identity, the famous Reenert character on 26 October celebrated its 150th anniversary. On the occasion, a first English translation of the work was published.
Considered the biggest 19th century literary work coming from Luxembourg, Michel Rodange’s animal fable is also a political satire. To celebrate its anniversary, the education, childhood and youth ministry presented a series of additions to the work’s universe.
Among the efforts presented are a new edition of the book--in modern Luxembourgish with explanations for unusual vocabulary--as well as a Luxembourgish vocabulary book centered around the book. These works were a collaboration between the ministry’s pedagogic research and innovation service Script and the Centre for Luxembourgish ZLS.
“There are not many Luxembourgish literary figures who are as present in society as Reenert. Michel Rodange's sharp feathers, the polished language and the sophisticated way of taking a critical look at society through the animal world are not only a piece of Luxembourg heritage, but also a literary pleasure,” said education minister on the occasion.
At 7.22pm, a car crashed into a scooter in Esch-sur-Alzette on the Rue de l'Hopital, leaving one person injured. Rescue teams from Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange were on the scene.
An hour later at 8.34pm, a car overturned on a road in Rodenhoff in Rodange, leaving two people injured. Alongside emergency medical services from Esch-sur-Alzette, an ambulance from Esch-sur-Alzette and Sanem-Differdange and firefighters from Pétange were on the scene.

The first TGV scheduled to take passengers from Rodange to Paris in the context of the Olympics was cancelled due to a disruption caused by pedestrians on the tracks near Chagny
the SNCF announced on its website on Sunday
Replacement shuttle buses were put in place to take passengers to Thionville
the new starting point of the TGV 2872 to Paris
The remaining TGVs from Rodange to the French capital have not been impacted by the disruption and are expected to run as scheduled. Passengers are still advised to consult sncf-voyafgeurs.com to stay up to date about potential changes
After having been forced to leave its pedestal on Place Guillaume II in 2022 due to renovation works on the square and the underground car park, the 'Renert' monument has now returned to its rightful place. The fox statue from Michel Rodange's famous fable was itself in rough shape and has therefore been restored over the past couple of months
Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer unveiled the statue by reciting the first stanza of the fable: "Et war eemol ëm d'Péngschten
this roughly translates as follows: "At the time of Pentecost
and all the birds were singing their songs from dawn to dusk."According to project manager Claude Slawinsky
the dismantling of the monument in 2022 lasted six weeks
followed by eight months of restoration in the workshop before each element was mounted back: "[Putting the statue back into place] is the final touch
To see the little fox now back in its place above the fountain is truly a great joy and a pleasure
The fountain is now functional again and providing drinking water
The total cost of the restoration project amounts to €550,000
it was indeed a prestigious project: "We are in the heart of Luxembourg City
It's not every day you get the chance to work on Place Guillaume
especially on a monument like this one by Michel Rodange."
there’s the written word - and Luxembourg is no different
Luxembourgish literature is relatively young
with its earliest forms emerging in the middle of the nineteenth century
And while there’s a few reasons it hasn’t quite caught on yet, there’s much to learn from poetry in the Grand Duchy and the heaps of contemporary verse being written and read today. Luxembourgish poetry has evolved in new and radical directions since its inception.
Arguably the father of modern Luxembourgish literature, it was Antoine Meyer (1801-1857) who first wrote in the local language. The publishing of his collection E' Schrek ob de' Lezeburger Parnassus in 1829 marks the first tapping of the language’s literary potential, and includes visions of and commentary on life in the fledgling country.
The title, roughly ‘A First Step up the Luxembourgish Parnassus’ alludes to Mount Parnassus, where the Greek god Apollo helped Orpheus transform into the legendary poet of mythology he has been ever since.
In other words, Meyer was not without ambition. Producing fables and romantic odes, he is also the author of Een Abléck an engem Wiertshaus zu Lëtzebuerg (“A look at an inn in Luxembourg”), aiming to secure a place in the literary canon for the country. Luxembourg was new on the European map at the time, and needed to express itself culturally.
Meyer’s first steps would soon be followed by three of the Grand Duchy’s greats (which you will recognize from countless street names).
Edmond de la Fontaine (1823-1891), otherwise known as Dicks, is Luxembourg’s national poet, like the Grand Duchy's Shakespeare. Best known for his plays, he was also a poet and lyricist, producing the collection D'Vulleparlament am Grengewald, and long-form lyrics like Den Hexemeeschter, which singer-songwriter Serge Tonnar has done a wonderful rendition of.
Michel Rodange (1827-1876) is credited with writing Luxembourg’s national epic, technically making him the country’s Homer. Like the tongue it's written in, Rodange’s De Renert is relatively recent, and written in accessible language; its commentary biting as a satire of Goethe’s Reineke Fuchs.
Two of the best-known Luxembourgish poems come from Michel Lentz (1820-1893), whose 1859 piece Ons Heemecht would go on to become the Grand Duchy’s national anthem. Lentz is also responsible for the national motto (Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn) taken from his much-quoted poem De Feierwon:
Kommt hier aus Frankräich, Belgie, Preisen, Mir wëllen iech ons Heemecht weisen, Frot dir no alle Säiten hin, Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn. Frot dir no alle Säiten hin, Wéi mir esou zefridde sinn.
Often misread as a defensive stance, the poem is an invitation for outsiders to come see the country. It’s also, crucially, a proud statement of Luxembourg’s independence, in spite of centuries of European warfare its geographical location made it unable to escape.
No official translation of the quotation exists, but it roughly goes as follows:
Come from France, Belgium, Prussia, We want to show you our homeland, Wherever you ask, We want to remain what we are. Wherever you ask, How satisfied we all are.
Luxembourg continues to produce poetry, losing one of its brightest bards, Anise Koltz, a little over a month ago. Her works have thankfully been widely translated, for instance in English. The Grand Duchy is also home to poetry slams where up-and-coming lyricists may leave their mark.
Of course, one could also argue that Luxembourgish poetry has evolved into modern forms like the hip-hop of local artist Turnup Tun with his emphasis on lyricism, satire and rhyme.
Amongst national literatures, Luxembourgish poetry stands out as a young discipline - a fact reflected by its hallmark pieces. Its national epic isn’t an ancient text detailing the life of a hero, but a rather recent bit of political satire. Rodange died only a little over a century ago, but his motto and national anthem are powerful statements which still ring true today.
So next time you catch a glimpse of the national motto on a façade on the Rue de la Loge, you’ll know there’s more to it than meets the eye.

the Rodange P+R should also help to relieve congestion in certain car parks such as the one at the Pétange station
the Rodange park and ride will be inaugurated and accessible from 17 April at 4pm
It will be the third largest park and ride in the country and access will be free for the first 24 hours
The workmen were still at work on Monday 3 April at Rodange station
but the opening of its P+R (”park and rail” as the CFL call it
as it is a park and ride linked to a station) is scheduled for Monday 17 April at 4pm
Initially announced for mid-2022 and then for the end of 2022
it will have a capacity of almost 1,600 parking spaces
The national railway company did not wanted to give additional details for the moment as a press briefing is planned on the day of the inauguration
It will be the third largest P+R in Luxembourg
after those of Bouillon (2,442 places) and Belval-Université (1,622)
This car park--the construction of which began in 2020 and was entrusted to the company Félix Giorgetti with the firm BFF for the architectural design--has a total surface area of 41,000 m2
as Rodange station is one of the strategic points of the country’s rail network

The car park will be accessible free of charge for 24 hours
Work is not quite finished at the P+R in Rodange
The capacity of the car park will be almost 1,600 spaces
The creation of the P+R is part of a project that also includes the creation of a multimodal interchange and an additional platform track
Work on the station will continue for several more months
A new footbridge was installed a year and a half ago

the CFL specifies that the car park will be accessible free of charge for 24 hours
Although more details on these arrangements will be given on 17 April
an equivalent system had been put in place at the Belval-Université station
where a P+R card had to be badged outside the Belval perimeter in order to benefit from free access to the car park for 24 hours
An equivalent system can be imagined for the Rodange P+R
where the card is badged or scanned at a CFL terminal at least 1.5 kilometres from the station
access to the Belval-Université P+R is subject to a fee
with a monthly pass costing €85 and an hourly rate of €1 from 6am to 7pm
The total cost of the Rodange station project was estimated at €151m
including the creation of a multimodal interchange
The P+R alone accounts for 29% of the budget
including the construction of an additional platform track and a redesign of the switch areas
the bus station and parking spaces will be redeveloped to make the hub more attractive,” the CFL says on its website

A pilot biogas plant under construction at an ArcelorMittal steel site in southwestern Luxembourg will cut the facility’s gas usage by an estimated 25%
told MP Octavie Modert (CSV) in response to a parliamentary question on Thursday
Library picture: Claude Turmes is seen during a press interview
Total investment of around €15m will be required by the firm
with additional backing coming from Luxembourg energy group Encevo and French engineering group Etia
lllustration photo shows an anaerobic digester biogas plant in Germany producing biogas from agricultural waste Shutterstock
The steel giant will work with a subsidiary of Vow ASA
a technology firm specialised in decarbonising industry to use its patented Biogreen pyrolysis technology
which involves heating sustainable biomass at high temperatures
According to ArcelorMittal
the gases emitted during this process are then captured and processed into biogas
which will directly replace the use of natural gas in the Rodange plant’s rolling mill reheating furnace
“By-products such as bio-coal will also be created during the process
directly replacing the use of coal,” the firm said in a press release
The iron and steel industry is one of the biggest emitters of CO2, according to the European Commission. McKinsey calculaed that in 2018
every ton of steel produced on average 1.85 tons of carbon dioxide
contributing about 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions
To achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement
the EU developed its “Clean Planet for All” vision for the European economy to become climate neutral by 2050
Biogas usually refers to gases produced through anaerobic degradation of organic or man-made matter
As a renewable carbon neutral energy source
In 2017, Europe counted 18,943 biogas plants with combined production of 17 million tons of oil equivalent. The same year, renewable gases supplied around 7% of gross inland energy consumption in the EU, according to deputy head of unit at the European Commission’s energy department Antonio Lopez-Nicolas
production will have to scale up to 250 million tons of oil equivalent
Although the maintenance work faced some delays
A pivotal moment in the restoration process will occur next week when water is introduced into the new pool basin for the first time
Persistent leaks necessitated the replacement of the basin
a challenge compounded by the pool's location in an area abundant with springs and prone to ground instability
Addressing these issues was central to the extensive renovation efforts initiated three years ago in May
resulting in the stabilisation of the pool and the installation of a durable stainless-steel basin
expressed enthusiasm for the forthcoming enhancements to the facility:
"Now we have an impressive 50-metre pool with six lanes
we've installed a new slide and increased the number of changing rooms to accommodate school groups more effectively
It's fair to say that we've elevated the professionalism of the swimming pool while maintaining the concept of a roof that can be opened and closed
While this operational model existed in theory in the past
as noted by Marc Goergen from the Pirate Party
you couldn't open or close the roof while people were in the pool
You first had to ask people to get out of the pool and then you could open or close it
We're hopeful that the new construction company will address these challenges
ensuring smoother operation of the roof mechanisms
Goergen clarified that the delayed reopening of the swimming pool is not the fault of the municipal executive board (Schäfferot)
but rather to sluggishness on the part of the construction companies or
the companies submitting an offer that they did not fulfil
Goergen said that they were now counting on the swimming pool opening in May

of which 44 would be equipped with electric charging stations and 10 reserved for the CFL’s Flex Car sharing service
construction could begin as early as 2019 with the car park open to the public in 2021
MPs advised the use of recyclable materials for the construction as well as the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof
The idea is that the car park would be free to use for people with the mKaart
Other park and ride car parks are planned for the following towns though they were not discussed on Thursday:
MPs also discussed the expansion of platforms 5 and 6 at Luxembourg City train station and restructuring of the tracks

The train will instead operate from Rodange, the state rail company CFL said in a press release on Tuesday, with reservations available on the CFL website.
“One TGV per day will leave from Paris-Est in the direction of Rodange
also passing through Belval-Université station,” the CFL said
adding that the Belval and Rodange stations have large park-and-ride facilities

On Thursday 6 July, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps received a call from the secondary school in Luxembourg City to advise of the discovery of an envelope containing a suspicious substance in a bathroom on the premises
Rumours later surfaced among the student population that the incident had been caused by selected pupils hiding chalk in the envelope as a prank

Similar to a few other towns in Luxembourg, such a Bertrange for example, a “shared space” will be created to the tune of 7.5 million euros. It will be by the church and have a big esplanade area.
While shared space means that traffic can still circulate, cars will be dissuaded in driving through the area and the speed limit reduced to 20km/h in the zone.
More than 200 apartments in the area along with 500 square metres of commercial space will be created.
The reason for the project is clear; boost the attraction of Rodange town centre as a place to visit and shop, instead of the current trend of popping over the borders where several commercial zones and retail parks are located.
Construction is being carried out by private developers and has in fact, already begun with square metre prices in some areas quoted as being around the 4,000 euro mark.

A recent municipal council session in Pétange drew an unusually large crowd, after the CSV/LSAP alderman council declined an invitation to a meeting organised by two citizen’s initiatives.
Mayor Pierre Mellina used the council meeting to defend the local wellness hotel project
while criticising the “destructive” behaviour of the two citizens' initiatives
which he said were based on “misinformation.”
Mellina explained that the project – a youth and family hotel to be located behind the Rodange swimming pool – had followed proper consultation procedures since the inception of the project in 2010
He further noted that there had been ample opportunity to voice opposition to the project
noting that this was not because they opposed to project but rather to facilitate public dialogue
The alderman council expressed the view that it was too late to start such a dialogue
a position echoed by Mellina who emphasised that the council no longer has a legal way out of the project
This position is also supported by the DP opposition to the municipal council
Both organisations lament that the aldermen council is "hiding" behind 14-year-old studies
which no longer align with current approaches to climate and species conservation and warrant revaluation
Mayor Mellina is scheduled to meet with representatives of the two initiatives on Thursday and intends to authorise the project as quickly as possible if no new arguments are presented
Opponents of the decision are free to go to the administrative court and sue
Both citizen’s initiatives are considering taking legal action if they can raise sufficient funds
The incident took place at around 7am at the crossroads between Route de Longwy and Rue de la Fonderie
the victim was crossing the road when they were knocked down and dragged by the vehicle
Police are seeking witnesses to the accident and have asked anyone with information to contact the Käerjeng-Pétange police station
The two perpetrators showed the man their weapon as he exited his vehicle
Both were wearing a scarf to hide their faces
However, at the same time, sales of the steel group grew strongly to 30% to reach profits of 247.5 million euro compared to 190.5 million euros a year earlier. Steel exports have also risen sharply increasing tonnage figures from 407,300 tonnes in the first half of 2010 to 426,400 tonnes in 2011.
The company’s negative results and their explanations are primarily in relation to raw material costs. It is in this context that, for the first six months of the year, net company profits (Ebitda) will close with a loss of 5.3 million euros, an increase of 86% compared to 2010’s 2.8 million.
The company can however, already be pleased at the first positive results of the strategic plan agreed in the first quarter. Indeed, while Ebitda was almost 5 million euros in debt from January to March, it was only about -0.3 million euros in the second quarter.
In the Greater region, the situation is far from being any better: there are growing concerns in Florange, near Metz, after the publication of Luxembourg’s results. Moreover, it was decided to stop production by 2012 at the Belgian Fontaine l'Eveque site which employs about 60 workers, due to a drop in the construction market.
The incident was reported at about 10pm when the man, a 37-year-old, crossed over three railway tracks in an attempt to take a short cut from one platform to another.
However when arriving at the other side, he slipped when trying to climb onto the platform, and fell back on the tracks.
At the same time a train approaching from Athus arrived at the station and hit the man killing him instantly.
As a result of the fatal accident, the route was temporarily closed on Wednesday night.
the police received a further report from witnesses

The company has been located in the southwest of the country since 1990, its logo visible from afar in an industrial area near Belgium and France. Last month, Avery Dennison announced the investment (equivalent to $65 million), and the good news earned it a visit from Ministry of the Economy Etienne Schneider on Friday morning.
Avery Dennison wanted to reinforce its production capacity in Europe and chose to do so at the site in Luxembourg. The labels specialist already has eight production sites in Europe: France, Germany, Switzerland, the UK and the Netherlands, its European headquarters.
Rodange was most important, however, as it provides 40% of European production. With 403 employees, it produced 1.4 billion m2 of adhesive products per annum. "If we had a one-metre wide strip, you could go 35 times around the world with it," said Séverine Marquet, director of Rodange site.
The plant has customers throughout Europe and beyond for its more specialised products. The director is proud that the Rodange site was chosen for expansion.
"There are three major reasons for this choice," Marquet explained. "We have a higher level of average productivity with a motivated team. We're at the heart of Europe and constitute the epicentre of the logistics group. Finally, Avery Dennison appreciates the good relations with local authorities who demonstrate speed and efficiency."
The group will enlarge its building with a new wing of 12,000 m2. It will use the entire surface of its Luxembourg terrain. The extension will be used for high value-added production. The increase allows for an increase in cutting capacity and a larger receiving and shipment area as well.
Work will begin soon, and the new wing should be operational by the second half of 2018.
Management hasn't given any indication thus far about the number of additional jobs that will need to be filled. There should be new jobs in the pipeline, conisdering the extension will consist of a new production line. But the site is also highly automated. Nevertheless, as Marquet states,"It's too early to give a figure. We are just at the beginning of the project."
The fire was reported at around 8.25pm on the third floor of a block of flats
Firefighters had to first isolate the fire from the inside of the building to prevent it spreading before extinguishing the flames
The occupant of the property was taken to hospital as a precaution
A total of seven fire trucks were mobilised to the incident
