Mads Pedersen’s incredible season continues with yet another victory
In today’s second stage of the Tour de Luxembourg (Junglinster – Schifflange)
beating world champion Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Swiss rider Froidevaux (Tudor)
Pedersen’s triumphant finish is the lasting image of the day
but it was the tireless efforts of his teammates Simmons
that stretched the peloton and set the stage perfectly for Mads
how hard we worked to manage a final hectic
says a lot about how much we wanted to bring it home
but of course the credit must be shared with the team
If we beat the strong and aggressive competition here in Luxembourg it is because we are a strong team
with Uno-X doing a really hard attack to make peloton’s legs tired
“I had Amanuel there to ride a hard tempo so we could close them again and then no one else wanted to attack
We did the downhill full gas and from then on it was surfing a bit here and there
Quinn and Alex did a perfect lead out in the end
“Having a home rider like Alex that knows more or less it’s really important in days like this
But in general the whole season he’s been an important guy for me
it isn’t the same when he isn’t there” Mads added
Lidl-Trek has now achieved their goal of winning a stage at the Tour de Luxembourg
bringing the men’s team’s victory tally to 42 this season
their hopes for the General Classification took a blow when Mattias Skjelmose crashed after just 20km
sustaining deep wounds and forcing him to withdraw as a precaution
“We lost Skjelmose today and that changed a lot our plan for the GC,” added Mads
Tomorrow is a really hard day and it doesn’t suit me
but Quinn is doing really well and he’s in good shape
so we’ll try to set him up for something nice”
This is the story of our Tour de France Femmes and how we won the Best Team Classification 🏆

The annual Schifflange Cavalcade filled the streets with colour and music on Sunday as thousands gathered to celebrate one of the country's cherished carnival traditions
The lively parade featured extravagant floats
drawing both locals and visitors eager to take part in the festive spirit
organised by local associations and volunteers
winding through town as groups showcased creative themes and entertained the crowds with dance and music
This year's edition once again saw an array of imaginative floats
Carnival celebrations in Luxembourg have deep historical roots, with cavalcades taking place in various towns across the country. These parades traditionally mark the pre-Lenten festivities, a time of indulgence and revelry before the solemnity of Lent. Alongside Schifflange, other towns such as Diekirch and Esch-sur-Alzette also host popular cavalcades
each with its own unique flair and local traditions
Sunday's cavalcade in Schifflange was met with enthusiasm
perhaps due to favourable weather conditions
as families lined the streets to collect sweets thrown from the floats

As the pilot programme for French literacy classes enters its third year
our colleagues from RTL recently visited the Nelly Stein school in Schifflange where two parallel classes – one taught in German
the other in French – are gearing up for the new academic year
and Santiago are among the pupils of the first French literacy class
known in the Luxembourgish system as 'cycle 3.1'
they continue with a syllabus mirroring that of the German literacy classes
who lead the class during the first two years
She says that it has become clear that French is beneficial to the pupils chosen for the class
as they are more familiar with the language thanks to their immediate environment outside of school
this also made the children less shy and more willing to express themselves
when I was still teaching children how to read and write in German
it was the case that I had to translate a lot in the beginning
The absence of a language barrier has moreover allowed to increase pupils' vocabulary
essential during the early development phase
Third-graders usually have six hours of both German and French
but due to the different levels of the pilot classes
they will instead have seven hours of German and only five of French this year
Classes follow the same mathematics curriculum regardless of their literacy programmes since the books exist both in French and German
They do however continue with separate maths lessons until fifth grade
Both the French and German classes have joint sessions for minor subjects
where lessons are mostly held in Luxembourgish while work sheets are adapted to their respective primary languages
noting that translations have long been standard practice in Luxembourg schools
Since most pupils use Luxembourgish to communicate among themselves
using this language to respond in a class has become normal to them
who coordinates the internal work group of the Schifflange school
She also draws positive conclusions from the first two years
but acknowledges that the situation is continuously being monitored
managing the different schedules is without a doubt challenging
Scholtes explained that feedback from parents has been positive over the last two years
Many of them now feel more at ease to help kids with their homework
Parents continue having the choice to voluntarily register their children for the French literacy programme
The first two years of kindergarten usually point toward the best option
Teachers file a recommendation before parents later settle on a choice after thorough deliberation
the Nelly Stein school is one of four schools in the country participating in the pilot programme
it is not possible for non-resident children of the respective municipalities to join the programme
At present, the Education Ministry eyes a country-wide introduction of the French literacy option by 2026

According to estimates by the event organisers, more than 13,000 people lined the 2km route of the parade.
For the first time this year, confetti was not permitted. In its place, about 500kg of sweets were thrown to the public as the floats moved through Shifflange's streets.
The festive atmosphere continued all through the afternoon and into the evening.

Luxembourg's patisserie chain Oberweis is expanding in the south of the country with the opening this Friday of a "Café by Oberweis" in Schifflange
in the brand new Redrock shopping centre located in the Op Herbett area
The Oberweis confectioner has chosen Schifflange as the location for its eighth outlet in Luxembourg

The new flagship of the Bâtiself DIY store
which was built not far from the Foetz shopping area

Oberweis has set up a 200m2 outlet with a 20-seat terrace
The "Café by Oberweis" covers 200m2 on the first floor of the new shopping centre next to the Foetz area
a concept already developed in the Kirchberg and Grand-Rue shops
The sales area follows the plan of the Cloche d'Or shopping centre’s branch according to the brand
Schifflange marks the company's first foray into southern Luxembourg
which until now has concentrated on the capital and its outskirts
with the only exception of an opening in Trier
Oberweis is currently run by the second generation
The company employs 330 people in Luxembourg

Teranga or the "Maison de la Transition Alimentaire" was inaugurated last Tuesday in Schifflange
the building has a rich history and will continue to serve as a central meeting place for the community
In the main shopping street of Schifflange
there used to be a well-known bike shop owned by a Mr
Entenich,” recalls Mayor Paul Weimerskirch
he wanted his building to go to the community and serve as a place of solidarity or a house of benevolence.”
This vision aligns with the goals of SOS Faim
an organization with offices in Schifflange
which had long envisioned a space where experts
and residents could collaborate on sustainable food and agricultural initiatives
Danielle Bruck from SOS Faim explains that the new center is designed to do more than host events
It aims to spark curiosity and foster community engagement:
“We want people to feel comfortable and curious
It’s equally important to build a community here where people can come together to say
‘We want to actively contribute to the necessary shift in our food systems,’ and feel empowered to do so.”The ground floor includes a small café and a space for discussions
“The first floor includes a kitchen and community space for residents
along with eight rooms where volunteers and students interested in these topics can live and get involved in the project,” says Bruck
sees it as a unique opportunity to make a positive impact:
“I like doing things I know are for a good cause
And this is more than that – it’s an issue that affects us all
Teranga will be a place where we can welcome everyone and talk about these topics
SOS Faim is currently looking for two more young people
offering affordable accommodation in exchange for their involvement in this meaningful initiative
From next week on Teranga will be open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in Schifflange.
new neighbourhoods are being developed across Luxembourg to meet the demand for housing

Before the last set of this season’s matches kick off this coming Sunday afternoon
13 of the 16 teams to be part of the league in 2024/25 have already confirmed their spot in the division
Marisca Mersch and Fola Esch) are still fighting for their places
while Schifflange ’95 were officially relegated following their 4-1 loss at home to Swift Hesper last week
SC Bettembourg will return to the top-flight after a 50-year hiatus
closely followed by FC Rodange 91 who have also slipped away from their chasers to book the second automatic promotion spot
the 13th and 14th-placed BGL Ligue outfits will have to defend their place against the 3rd and 4th-best teams of the Ehrenpromotion respectively
while US Rumelange would be travelling to Bascharage to try and take Käerjéng’s place at the top table
a lot can change in the traditionally most chaotic part of the season
when every team runs out on the pitch fighting (or not quite) for different ambitions in the last matchday
but the fates of each club bar Schifflange have not yet been sealed
Fola Esch are the only other team to be certainly occupying a bottom-four position after the curtain-raiser on Sunday
but even they can grab the opportunity of a relegation play-off with a win against already-crowned champions Differdange
Käerjéng and Marisca (the only three clubs in limbo following Mondorf
RFCUL and Wiltz confirming their survival)
the options range from direct relegation to total safety in one week’s time
And if that didn’t bring enough jeopardy in itself
the draw pitted the former two against each other on the final day
essentially bringing us a one-off shootout for the precious BGL Ligue membership
In a season where the title race never really heated up and the four European places were never in doubt (until very recently
and in the most unexpectable way – we’ll return to this later)
the relegation dogfight is as exciting as it rarely is in Luxembourg – a refreshing sight
and the all-important wreck-fest derby in the last round will be one for all fans to cherish
According to UEFA’s latest review into all club’s finances and documents ahead of acquiring a UEFA Continental License for the following season
it made the verdict the FLF has since reiterated: four Luxembourgish teams are banned from Europe for 2024/25
Of the current group of teams still fighting for a place to compete
UNA Strassen and Victoria Rosport were all successful in their attempts to obtain the necessary license
Jeunesse Esch and Union Titus Pétange (alongside now-relegated Schifflange ’95) were denied entry to European competitions
also provided an explanation for their decisions
Union Titus Pétange and Schifflange all have unpaid bills towards players or staff
and/or other financing issues (stemming from over- or underspending) that makes them ineligible to compete
rumours of unpaid wages surfaced as early as February
when several key players (Dominik Stolz and Clément Couturier among them) were frozen out of the first team squad and made to train with the reserves in response to their concerns
Union’s squad for next season looks especially thin
as they have not succeeded in the contract talks about next season with more than half of their current roster yet
Schifflange’s infrastructure reflects the lack of necessary investment in the club
the money instead being spent on hefty salaries for players arguably past their prime (which played no small part in their on-pitch difficulties
the reason was different: UEFA cited an “impossibility to express an opinion”
which likely means the Bianconeri failed to deliver sufficient information or the required documents to the committee’s disposal
Even though Hesperange were expected to be granted permission for the license
the decision not to launch their own request looks like a major oversight from the Jeunesse board in retrospect
The decisions will not impact the number of places Luxembourg gets in Europe overall
The one Champions League qualifier spot will remain with FC Differdange
while the Europa Conference League provides another avenue for three teams from the Grand Duchy
Progrès and Dudelange had already reserved their tickets in advance
but it has now transpired that the third (now empty) slot will go to UNA Strassen or Victoria Rosport
the only two teams with a mathematical chance of finishing as the ‘best of the rest’
and a draw or win against Swift Hesperange would provide the first opportunity for an international foray in the club’s history
Rosport need a win against Marisca Mersch to be able to overtake Strassen
The only time Rosport have featured in Europe was in 2005
when they lost to IFK Göteborg (Sweden) by an aggregate score of 5-2 in the first round of the short-lived UEFA Intertoto Cup
Dave Turpel might be approaching his peak fitness and top form a little too late considering we are one week away from a two-month long summer break for all clubs
Having made his return in the Luxembourgish Cup with a hat-trick in September
he was back in league action shortly after
for the first time since his injuries in a traffic accident in 2019 left him requiring surgery and full rehabilitation
his future in the world of football looked doubtful
Turpel had earned 52 caps for Luxembourg at international level by then
which led to some of the top clubs of the country continuously taking gambles by signing him despite his well-documented health issues
in the hope that the striker would miraculously regain full fitness earlier than expected
After half a year out at Belgian club Virton
two years without making an appearance at Swift Hesperange and another at Progrès Niederkorn
After nine substitute cameos in the BGL Ligue
he found himself in the Wasps’ starting XI for the first time since signing for them in 2022
It was in the Stade Jos Nosbaum where Turpel enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career
with a staggering 95 goals and 25 assists in 125 league games for F91
He finished as top scorer in 2017/18 (with 33 goals in 26 matches!)
four National Division titles and a League Cup (the competition was last held in 2020)
The striker’s bond with Dudelange is seemingly as strong as ever
as he ended up rediscovering his old form last Saturday
turning the clocks back to his pre-injury performances
His brace helped Niederkorn defeat Dudelange 2-0
It was Turpel’s first goal involvement in any league since 2020
and the first in Luxembourg since 19 May 2019 – one day short of five whole years
can still enjoy several successful years in the remainder of his career if further injury setbacks elude him
but to have been taken away the opportunity to make a name for himself in his prime (his accident came only three years after he won the Luxembourgish Footballer of the Year award) must have had an immense psychological toll to deal with
things look encouraging for him once again
US Mondorf had already managed to steady the ship by hiring David Zitelli as their head coach in March
as it has resulted in an eight-game run containing a single loss (to cup winners Niederkorn) and brushed aside any doubts of relegation
In the knowledge that their target for the season had been achieved
their following game was against Fola Esch
Even though Fola had a lot on the line (potentially their BGL Ligue place)
it was a game the Angry Goats were widely expected to win
not many would have expected to witness the second-biggest victory of all season in the country
Mondorf’s 6-0 drubbing of Fola has only been bettered by Differdange in 2023/24
when they scored one more against Racing Union upon the resumption of the championship in February
Due to the end-of-season prize money gradually increasing for every position on the league table
Mondorf technically still had something to play for
their positive goal difference might just be what helps them achieve a top-half finish
the consequences are uncomparably more drastic
Defeat meant they are now highly unlikely to escape relegation – even a win against Differdange might not suffice
depending on the result of Rosport vs Marisca
Fola also have the worst goal difference across the league
meaning even if they do catch up with UN Käerjéng in terms of points
they will almost certainly still be the ones to end up going down
What happens to the oldest club of the country is still up in the air
so anyone interested in their fortunes will be able to tune into the last round of games on RTL Live Arena
highlights and full video footage are all available on RTL.lu’s Live Arena hub
the building in question is currently being renovated
Flames and heavy smoke are coming from the roof and damage is estimated to be significant
we do not have any information on the cause of the fire
Traffic is disrupted on Avenue de la Libération and the surrounding streets for the time being
First rumours about a closure of the site emerged in September 2011 but it wasn't until 2012 that ArcelorMittal decided to indefinitely stop production at the wire rod mill.
According to information obtained by the “Luxemburger Wort” a permanent closure of the Schifflange site is on the horizon. While ArcelorMittal would not confirm this, the company said that a final decision on the future of the plant would be reached by the end of 2014.
Criticism arose over the use of the Schifflange emission rights, with the government demanding that ArcelorMittal should hand these back, arguing that the company could sell these for profit. However, ArcelorMittal filed an appeal saying that the emission certificates were being used for its other production plants.
Environment Minister Carole Dieschbourg in January meanwhile said that Schifflange would in future no longer receive emission certificates.
A company spokesperson confirmed that the certificates would expire at the end of the year, but added that any other statements about the future of the plant are speculation.
The steel site spreads across Esch/Alzette and Schifflange, with Esch mayor Vera Spautz saying that ArcelorMittal had so far not reached out to the commune about the future of the site. Schifflange mayor Roland Schreiner on the other hand said that there have been some meetings, without elaborating on their outcome.
However, he hopes that a joint solution with ArcelorMittal and Esch/Alzette can be found.
A spokesperson of the Economy Ministry meanwhile commented that it was a known fact that production at the Schifflange plant would not resume, as the plant will lose its operating licence at the end of a two-year period following the temporary shut-down, which coincides with the end of this year.

Luxembourg: there's a new "turbo" roundabout in the works.04/03/2016ShareDid you travel along the A13 late February and notice the trees being cut down en masse at the exits leading to Schifflange and Foetz
it wasn't routine maintenance: it was yet another "turbo" roundabout
spokesperson of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Development
But brace yourselves: there are actually two new roundabouts planned on the N169
only one of these will be a "turbo" version
the roundabout will be a more traditional one
The "turbo" roundabout will not only ensure the connection between the route nationale and the motorway
but also toward the new "op Herbett" zone
The construction should be done at a relatively "turbo" speed as well--before the end of the year
A "turbo" roundabout already exists in Kirchberg
where specific lanes allow drivers to reach the motorway to France or exit the highway and take the road directly to Sandweiler
The one in Schifflange will not include traffic lights like the one in Kirchberg
A third "turbo" roundabout is also in the works in Sandweiler.
The “Société du Train a Fil de Schifflange – STFS” will stop production in 2013 for an indefinite period of time. ArcelorMittal spokesperson Arne Langner said to wort.lu that the mill had been running at less than 10 percent capacity due to low demand.
The electric furnace in Schifflange has been lying dormant for some time, too. The rolling mill in Rodange, meanwhile, remains in operation, though at a reduced level.
A tripartite on October 26 is set to bring some answers for the Luxembourg employees of the steel giant about the company's future and their jobs. Some 47 workers at the Schifflange site are affected by the measure. They are likely to be reassigned to other sites in Belval and Differdange.
In a statement, ArcelorMittal commented that production costs were too high to make the wire rod mill viable. Therefore, the production will be moved to another site in 2013 to ensure competitiveness.
In total, ArcelorMittal employs some 5,500 people on 16 sites across the country.
a driver struggled to regain control of his car in the "Op Herbett" industrial zone in Schifflange
the motorist lost control of the vehicle while attempting to park
accelerating across the car park and crashing into a number of stationary vehicles
The latter was given first aid at the scene and later taken to hospital with minor injuries
In addition to damaging nine vehicles and two electric charging stations
the motorist pushed another vehicle 10 metres across the car park and finally came to a standstill after crashing into a shopping trolley shelter
a person was attacked by two young men near a supermarket in North Bonnevoie-Verlorenkost
The two suspects approached their victim on Rue des Gaulois at around 7.40pm
the suspects strangled him from behind and knocked him to the ground
The attackers then took the man's mobile phone
Police launched a search following the incident
A complaint has been filed and an investigation is underway

Gasthauer wasn't nominated to take part in the Grande Boucle by his French cycling team "AG2R La Mondiale" this year
While Gasthauer wasn't happy about this decision
he refuses to let it bring him down and is looking forward to spending more time teaching young children the joy of cycling
The site has been inactive since 2011 when the electric furnace was switched off and around 15 people were left to monitor and maintain the plant.
Rather than reopen, ArcelorMittal is considering the possibility of developing the site, as part of a 62-hectare plot, constructing housing, offices, shops and other infrastructure.
According to information from the Luxemburger Wort, the steel group would reassign the land, free of charge, to development agency Agora. The latter would then be responsible for clean-up costs.
Luxembourg unions gave a mixed response. The LCGB blamed the firm's “bad investment decisions”, which they argue led to the Schifflange plant's closure.
The OGBL reflected on the successful tripartite negotiations which meant that solutions had been found for 700 steel workers. T
he Christian union, meanwhile, welcomed the decision to carry out a feasability study, based on the positive work Agora has previously done at the former steel mill in Belval, today the site of the university, a housing estate and shopping centre.
Luxembourg's Sustainable Development Minister, François Bausch, applauded the plans, which he said would help “decentralise current urban structures”.
“The multifunctional reconversion of an industrial site is, without a doubt, the most efficient, coherent and proactive way to achieve this goal,” he said.

Schifflange Mayor Paul Weimerskirch confirmed that a chemical contamination had taken place in a local canal

which raised concerns about general safety
authorities gave the all-clear after determining the source of the stench

People are invited to call the municipality if the stench persists after the cleaning operation
The company was granted emissions of around 81,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide for 2012, as part of a national distribution plan.
However, when the plant was closed down in 2011 and did not pick up its activities in 2012, the former government and its Environment Minister Marco Schank demanded back the certificates, arguing that ArcelorMittal could sell these.
At a price of 20 euros per tonne, the steel company could cash in around 1.62 million euros for the emission certificates.
However, in October 2013 ArcelorMittal filed an appeal with a Luxembourg administrative court, saying that its other sites benefitted from the 'spare' certificates.
In answer to a parliamentary question by Roy Reding (ADR), new Environment Minister Carole Dieschbourg commented that the government is still “convinced” that ArcelorMittal should hand back the certificates.
Additionally, she explained that in 2013 the company no longer received emission certificates for the Schifflange steel plant.

This year's edition of the Schifflange Cavalcade cost €21,000
Part of this investment is covered by the sale of tickets
the festive procession still had to be called off on short notice due to the ongoing pandemic
The next Cavalcade will take place in Esch-sur-Alzette on Sunday
After months of speculation about the future of the site, management announced the decision at an extraordinary meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.
The site's 47 employees will be re-assigned to the Belval and Differdange sites while the remaining orders will be passed on to a steel site in Duisburg, Germany.
Luxembourg's unions criticised the decision, saying that it was yet another step in the decline of the Grand Duchy's industrial sector.
The LCGB said that Lakshmi Mittal was staying “true to himself and pursues his route and his objectives.” With production halted at the site, the LCGB fears that the site will be abandoned with hundreds of potential jobs lost.
The OGBL meanwhile said that the problems at the Schifflange site were due to poor management rather than difficult markets.
At a steel Tripartite on October 26, the union intends to present findings, based on an audit, showing that the Rodange and Schifflange steel sites are viable, and that everything should be done on the part of ArcelorMittal and the Luxembourg government to save them.
Construction at the former steel site will take around 20 years to be completed Agora
The 61.16-hectare site straddles the Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange communes
Talks to convert the former steel mill--operated by ArcelorMittal--began in 2016
shortly after a company decision to end production there
But it will take another 20 years for construction to be complete
Half of the site will be turned into housing--of which 30% will be considered affordable--with offices
and small businesses and shops also planned for the project
Similar to Belval--the site of Luxembourg's university--the project will aim to uphold the site’s industrial heritage in its architectural design
which also oversees the Belval development
Urban Agency and Urban Creators will provide the concept--with a focus on sustainability--to be realised with Luxembourg engineering firm Luxplan
The government had previously brought in Danish experts from urban design firm Gehl to reimagine the Kirchberg business district into a more liveable space for residents
It now wants Esch-Schifflange to be a “smart city” from the get-go, built sustainably, close to nature and well-connected in terms of mobility. The high-speed tram planned to connect Luxembourg City with Esch-sur-Alzette will stop in the new development
which will also be connected to the country’s bus network

The project for the plant in the “Um Monkeler” industrial zone had met with much criticism. Mayor Roland Schreiner said that the plant would be too close to a nearby residential area.
He also added, in an interview with DNR, that the planning application did not adhere to the development plan. “A series of elements led us to issuing a negative assessment,” he said.
On Friday, the application will be put forward to the Schifflange commune's council.

Schank had previously announced that he would make a decision before the October 20 elections and not delay the issue.
However, the parliamentary petitions committee has submitted several questions, which need to be looked into before a final decision can be made, Schank said on Thursday.
Local authorities and residents have opposed the construction of an ashpalt plant at the “Um Monkeler” industrial zone, fearing pollution in the area amid other concerns, such as an unmanageable increase in traffic in the area.
Additionally, questions have now been raised around whether the site's development plan even allows for the construction of such a plant.
Schank said that the Interior Ministry needs to clear up this issue. Only once it is known that the construction of a plant is allowed can a decision be made about handing out an operating licence.
Animal shelters across Luxembourg face a perpetual influx of animals seeking refuge
with not a week passing without receiving requests for assistance
Despite moving into a new facility in 2021
the animal shelter in Schifflange finds itself consistently at full capacity
consisting of five cages which are occasionally occupied by two dogs at the same time
often leads to temporary arrangements in alternative spaces
Complicating matters further are cases involving confiscated dogs awaiting legal proceedings
tying up resources that could otherwise accommodate new arrivals
The shelter operates with a waiting list and regularly fields calls from individuals who no longer want to keep their pets
While efforts are made to facilitate solutions within families or through referrals to other organisations
the challenges persist across all shelters
Luxembourg is home to four animal shelters dedicated to the care of dogs and cats
A lot of kittens are typically born in spring and autumn
so the shelters are bracing for an influx in that regard
the situation remains relatively quiet for the time being
with all shelters operating at full capacity and maintaining waiting lists due to overwhelming demand
The numbers paint a stark picture: Dudelange has ten dogs on its waiting list
The Gasperich shelter also works with a waiting list
but this one is "constantly changing." In general
the situation would be extremely difficult to manage
Liliane Ferron from the shelter in Gasperich told our colleagues from RTL Télé
The Gasperich animal shelter boasts the largest capacity at 76 cages
The shelter in Dudelange places an emphasis on group housing and could take in a maximum of 20 dogs at a time
Luxembourg's shelters can accommodate 96 dogs
yet at least 21 dogs are currently awaiting placement
excluding those on Gasperich's waiting list
the Ministry of Agriculture issued an appeal to municipalities
calling for the establishment of a fifth animal shelter
The initiative involves identifying a suitable location for the new facility and appointing an association to oversee its management
responsible for animal welfare at the Ministry
underscores the urgency: "It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a structure in the north
because at some point this animal shelter will also be full if we carry on like this
the long-term solution lies in individual accountability."
efforts are underway to enhance existing facilities
with Dudelange's shelter undergoing expansion and Gasperich set to welcome a new cat house
The Ministry of Agriculture contributes 30% toward the construction or extension of such facilities
Emergency situations involving pets extend beyond dogs and cats
prompting the involvement of private associations like Hamster.lu
Founded by Dan Thill and his team seven years ago
the non-profit aims to provide sanctuary for smaller animals often overlooked by traditional shelters
Thill emphasises the importance of raising awareness about the care of hamsters and other rodents while facilitating their rescue and rehoming
Dudelange's wildlife centre has expanded its scope to include treatment for exotic animals
filling a void in Luxembourg's animal welfare infrastructure
"We started doing this somewhat out of necessity
because there was no structure in Luxembourg that could take in these animals," says Jill Gaasch from the rescue centre
"The problem was that people kept finding parrots or similar animals and nobody knew where they could be handed in
even if they were originally intended for wild animals
but that's basically how it started," according to Gaasch
Expansion plans are also underway for the wildlife centre in Dudelange to create more space for wild animals as well as exotic animals
The latter usually need a place until they are adopted
And that is what all of these animals have in common: they are all looking for new owners that will look after them for the rest of their lives

The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps set up a temporary dam in the area around the Brill nature reserve and placed clarifying cubes in the river to help halt the pollution
An exact source for the pollution is yet to be determined
while the nature of the substance itself has not been confirmed

but the temporary barrage remains in place at the time of writing
On Saturday, a soapy foam was spotted in a stream near Bissen, with the cause yet to be confirmed.
However, at the same time, sales of the steel group grew strongly to 30% to reach profits of 247.5 million euro compared to 190.5 million euros a year earlier. Steel exports have also risen sharply increasing tonnage figures from 407,300 tonnes in the first half of 2010 to 426,400 tonnes in 2011.
The company’s negative results and their explanations are primarily in relation to raw material costs. It is in this context that, for the first six months of the year, net company profits (Ebitda) will close with a loss of 5.3 million euros, an increase of 86% compared to 2010’s 2.8 million.
The company can however, already be pleased at the first positive results of the strategic plan agreed in the first quarter. Indeed, while Ebitda was almost 5 million euros in debt from January to March, it was only about -0.3 million euros in the second quarter.
In the Greater region, the situation is far from being any better: there are growing concerns in Florange, near Metz, after the publication of Luxembourg’s results. Moreover, it was decided to stop production by 2012 at the Belgian Fontaine l'Eveque site which employs about 60 workers, due to a drop in the construction market.

"We want to show our development as a green and sustainable municipality," says Georges Mischo
is shaping up to be a major cross-border celebration that puts the spotlight on the country's former industrial capital
For the mayors of the eleven Luxembourg municipalities involved
this cultural year is an opportunity to demonstrate that these territories have been able to reinvent themselves and have made their contribution to the country's development
This is the threshold of an important year for the image of a town that does not deny its steelmaking past
Mischo is happy to pose in front of the Belval blast furnaces
"We want to show our development as a green and sustainable municipality,” he says
not forgetting to mention the research centre that Esch-Belval has become and the dense business ecosystem that has developed
the municipal commercial tax (ICC) has practically doubled over the last decade
Such growth will not continue given the limited amount of land still available
Mischo explains: “From 36,000 inhabitants today
we should reach 50,000 or 55,000 by 2030 or 2035.”
There was a time when Differdange was a hamlet of farms
that the mayor Christiane Brassel-Rausch (Déi Gréng) poses
The site will be showcased during the cultural year
“with an exhibition that will allow us to discover the many changes that this place has undergone”
It is also a way of showing the evolution of a city that is a good example of what Esch2022 wishes to highlight: “An industrial city in a more modern city
turned in particular towards knowledge with the presence of two universities (Lunex and Mudec).” The city does this while remaining a strong economic centre with an industrial zone like Haneboesch (Costantini
Now we may have to slow down to allow our municipal infrastructure to adapt
"We are indeed reviving our Return of Babel exhibition
which was created in 2007 and dealt with the first wave of migration to Dudelange and Luxembourg," says mayor Dan Biancalana (LSAP)
posing above in front of the Opderschmelz cultural centre
on the second and third generations of migrants,” according to the new co-president of the LSAP party
having "experienced moderate growth over the past 10 years
should provide 1,500 homes by 2035.” On the economic front
“a new pillar based on research and innovation is being created on the business park that already houses the National Health Laboratory (LNS).” This will complement the industrial (Husky
Ampacet) and logistical (CFL Multimodal) sectors already present
the population of the municipality of Pétange has increased by 40% and now exceeds 20,000 inhabitants
This is quite a spectacular figure when you consider that only 45% of the municipal territory can be built on
The closer you get to the centre of the country
the less affordable it is,” says the mayor
posing above in front of the Wax cultural centre
In 20 minutes you are in the city.” And it will get even better
as Mellina is expecting the new P+R at a station in Rodange “for the autumn”
just a stone's throw from a PED that seems to have never been in such good shape since the steel era
the municipality of Sanem wants to revive the Bel-Val drinking water spring
but which was exported to the whole world in the 20th century
explains Mayor Simone Asselborn-Bintz (LSAP)
on the site of the former municipal greenhouses
The name "Bel-Val" is not only synonymous with water in Sanem
The town with a similar name and growing economy
which straddles the municipalities of Sanem and Esch
is the source of “the strong population growth of recent years”
with the creation of two new business parks in Op den Aessen
the giant of the Parc Merveilleux will wake up!” according to Laurent Zeimet (CSV)
which is well known to local and Greater Region tourists
“It will even make the rounds of the commune,” he adds
with several artists planning the various stages
The whole thing will result in an adventure that will also be told in a comic book to be published in April
The timing is ideal to coincide with the special edition of the LiteraTour
the annual literary festival organised in the municipality
and with “the inauguration of the new cultural centre”
Bettembourg should also soon be able to count on a new business park for local companies
“So that they can leave the residential areas and develop
It will be located on the site of the 1997 Michael Jackson concert,” says Zeimet
Legend has it that a nymph lived near Schifflange
But the Schifflange municipality wants to revive this myth
“The site is currently undergoing renovation
And the story will be immortalised in a book,” says Paul Weimerskirch (CSV)
who poses above in front of the entrance to Metzer Schmelz
And as the nymph in question attracted boys to her nets
the municipality has recently succeeded in attracting companies such as Bâtiself or Oberweis: these are “two points of attraction on the Op Herbett business park
but these arrivals give an idea of the future” as will the transformation of the Esch-Schifflange wasteland into a housing area that could eventually accommodate 10,000 inhabitants
worked hard on recycling and succeeded in its mission
“By giving a more important framework to the Buergbrennen
the tradition that follows the carnival and aims to chase away the winter
We are also working with the University of Luxembourg to conduct a study on this typical custom,” explains Michel Wolter (CSV)
who is posing here in front of the Käerjenger Treff cultural centre
When asked about the economic growth of the municipality
he says: "It is strongly based on the Robert Steichen business park
It is therefore difficult to attract new companies
but we know how difficult it is to find it
we don't have any old industrial wastelands."
the first day of May is labour day in Kayl-Tétange
But it is also a day to remember Jean Schortgen
the first worker in the country to become a member of parliament
four years before his death--on 1 May--in a mining accident in Tétange
This slice of history was worth the graphic novel that the municipality will publish--in collaboration with the Chamber of Deputies--on the occasion of Esch2022
The project that was unanimously approved by the town council
This is not insignificant when you know that the political majority has just changed in this municipality “where people live above all else”
who is posing above in front of the Schungfabrik cultural centre
“There is little industrial activity in our area
“Mondercange is not a 'red soil' commune
This is reflected in the major event that will take place in Esch2022: a "pop-up eco-design village” on the site of the Beim Nëssert cultural centre in Bergem (where the photo above was taken)
“We will showcase the products and services that are available to the public
but also to raise awareness.” And while the mayor is pleased with the upcoming arrival of a large Mercedes dealership (200 jobs) in Pontpierre
“We now want to turn to the circular economy,” he says
thinking in particular of the ZARE business park
As for a Foetz zoning area that is more than half a century old
“one of the biggest challenges will be to succeed in upgrading it
“We are the second smallest municipality in the country
but also one of the most densely populated
Rumelange is trying to make the most of the available space economically
Vossloh Cogifer Kihn and Poeckes settling here
But there are also ideas for a different kind of image
Not least with the flagship project for Esch2022: Rëm.xx
“By using modern technologies and virtual reality
we aim to reposition Rumelange as a dynamic
future-oriented town while at the same time enhancing its past.” The ideal example is the transformation of the house of the former sculptor Albert Hames (located a few metres from the mayor in the photo above
not far from the old funicular) into a multifunctional space
suitable for an immersive tourist experience

a pedestrian was injured after being hit by a car on Avenue de la Libération in Schifflange
Reports of smoke in a residential building in Limpertsberg led to an intervention by the fire brigades from Luxembourg City and Hesperange at around 10pm
The situation was quickly brought under control
No less than 50 emergency services workers were involved in the incident to tackle the blaze on Rue d l’Eglise.
The fire was so fierce, parts of the roof had to be removed in order to gain access to the root of the blaze and extinguish it as quickly as possible.
Luckily though, due to the quick response of firefighters material damage was kept to the façade and roof of the building.
No injuries were reported in the incident and details of how the fire was sparked are not known at this stage.
The 60 hectare site has stood empty for the past 7 years
The one-time home of heavy industry is to receive a new lease of life as a place to live and work in the future
it will be some time until the transformation occurs
In recent years nature has reclaimed the site for its own and it is barely recognisable as the former workplace for 2,600 employees
Domingos Oliveira explored the large hall and the rest of the site in more detail
RTL photographer Domingos Oliveira takes you to hidden places
lesser known locations and buildings with an interesting story
1) The first instalment captured the last moment of the agricultural centre in Mersch
2) We then visited Zenningen Zoo, which was closed in the early 80s.
3) Our third trip took us to Hesperange's eery swimming pool which now looks like the setting for an apocalyptic film.
4) The fourth photo series targeted the veritable ghost town "Cité Syrdall."
5) We also visited the iconic cinema Ariston in Esch, which opened in 1962 and closed in 2016
The cinema's history is an eventful one - from erotic films to youth theatre
6) In the sixth instalment, we took a trip down memory lane and revisited pictures of Luxembourg City's former "centre Aldringen," an underground parking lot and cultural hub that gave way to Centre Hamilius
7) The seventh gallery in the series took us to Luxembourg's former police museum
8) And in the 8th instalment we got to take a look at a cemetery for old fire engines
9) The 9th gallery visited the Lentilles Terres Rouges site in Esch
