of Biloxi passed away peacefully in the care of St
Joseph Hospice in Gulfport in the early hours of January 19
where she attended Sacred Heart Girls High and played the flute in the kilted marching band
she worked as an assistant in the Gulfport offices of Dr
These plans changed when she encountered Thomas Wiltz of Biloxi and his vintage Ford Mustang
The two married in 1974 and had two children
Elizabeth Katie and Jason Michael Wiltz.
When illness left Thomas unable to continue working in his family auto parts business
an in-home daycare which she operated for more than 30 years
she served as a loving caretaker to literally hundreds of Gulf Coast children who will always remember her simply and affectionately as “Miss Cathy.” Miss Cathy was a warm-hearted
devout Catholic who loved spending time with her friends and family
She was a tremendous fan of pop music from the 1960s and 70s (especially the Bee Gees) and would often entertain her loved ones by putting on headphones and enthusiastically lip-syncing to her favorite songs
She was also a great lover of movies who frequently peppered her conversations with dialogue borrowed from favorites like Young Frankenstein
and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
She will be remembered for her outgoing personality
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents
Harold (“Flash”) and Verne Lamas
She is survived by her husband of 50 years
Elizabeth (“Katie”) and Jason (“J.”) Wiltz of Biloxi; her brothers
Thomas Lamas of Jackson and James (“Jimmy”) Lamas of Ocean Springs
Emilie Wiltz of New Orleans and Anna Card of O’Fallon
Josie and Janie Cordera; and her grandnephews
all of whom she loved very dearly and prayed for daily.
The family would like to thank all of Catherine’s caregivers at Memorial Hospital and St Joseph Hospice for their professional and kindhearted care.
Visitation will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m
at Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Catholic Church in Biloxi on Saturday
Catherine’s family asks that you consider making a donation in her name to Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Catholic Church
Plans for a Celebration of Life event will be announced in September.

MARTIN PARISH — At Joyce's Supermarket in St
Mary Wiltz’s role in the meat department goes beyond just preparing cuts of meat
and providing support to both her colleagues and her customers
family isn’t just about those related by blood—it's about the family she’s built at work."I just love to be with family
being around or surrounded by people that I love," Wiltz says

he was on the first step with his head down," she says
Her father had fallen while trying to help her mother
As both of her parents faced serious health challenges
including her mother's diagnosis of dementia
Mary made the decision to take two years off from work to care for them
She remained by their side until they both passed away
Wiltz shares that the period of caregiving was challenging but found solace in her family’s support
great nieces and great nephews and everybody cares about me and they love me,” she reflects
It was through this love and support that she eventually found the strength to return to work
Every single one of them gave me a big hug,” she recalls with a smile
Wiltz explains that the warmth of her coworkers made it clear that they
the love she feels both at home and at work is what she says makes everything worthwhile

Wiltz served on the Charleroi Area School School Board for 49 years
“If you could say anybody was a true Cougar
from the time he was in high school until now,” said Adele Hopkins
a Charleroi school director for the last 22 years
“He always put that first in his life
mostly how to listen to people before you make your decisions
“He taught me a lot about listening to people
that it’s not as important to be heard as it is to listen,” Zelich said
“Once you get that lesson and people know you care you can work together and achieve goals together
He had 39 years of experience when I became superintendent
There’s no one you can go to that has more knowledge.”
Wiltz topped the Pennsylvania School Board Association’s 2023 honor roll for his years of service
“He was always a leader,” said Pepper
“He was one that people respected and looked to as part of the school district
the taxpayers.’ These are not only large shoes to fill
Director Elaine Pappesergi said she intended to serve a two-year term when elected but Wiltz convinced her to make a longer commitment
“His strongest leadership skill was getting us to work as a cohesive unit,” she said
“He enabled us to work together for the benefit of the students
The students and staff always were the main concern in making our decisions
We have top-notch educational and athletic facilities
We have been blessed under his leadership to make sure our buildings and facilities and campuses are among the best around.”
Serving as a school director for nearly a half-century was one example of his dedication not only to the district but to the community
“He was truly dedicated and the public knew that,” Hopkins said
“He was elected every time and usually led the ticket
the taxpayers knew that he was there for them
It’s quite a legacy for him that he did that
You don’t find many people that put in that many years of dedication.”

Jenna Clair Wiltz; and five great nieces and nephews
Pellerin Funeral Home of Breaux Bridge (337-332-2111) is in charge of arrangements
Friends recalled his kind nature along with his love for the district
A champion for his students — on the field
in the classroom and as a veteran leader on the Charleroi Area school board — Wiltz bled red and black and was always sure to flash a contagious smile beaming with pride at every success for his students and those around him
has left a lasting legacy within his community and all the lives he touched while wearing many hats over the years
Wiltz graduated from Charleroi Area High School in 1962
He was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 and served as a military police officer in Vietnam from 196667
he returned home to start his career as an educator
Wiltz graduated from Duquesne University with a degree in secondary education in 1972 with a concentration on social studies
He began his professional career shaping young lives at Mon Valley YMCA
a position he had for 37 years before passing the torch to current CEO Jeff Vitale in 2010
Wiltz helped to build the organization into what it is today
and Vitale said the legacy he has left won’t be forgotten
“He was here for 37 years as CEO and it was a truly monumental task to live up to,” Vitale said
There was just something about him that set people at ease and calmed them down.”
Vitale said with Wiltz at the helm of the organization
“Looking back now at all he was able to accomplish
his innate ability to bring people together and form these relationship
he made impossible goals possible,” Vitale said
it started out of a school bus on top of the hill and three different building projects
no one knew how they would raise the money to make it happen
but he made it happen no matter what he was up against.”
Vitale said Wiltz’s willingness to help others is something he will be remembered for
we’ve heard countless stories over the past few days about people commenting on what he meant to them and how he impacted them,” Vitale said
“There were countless avenues he traveled to do that
he just wanted to help as many people as he could
Vitale said Wiltz was proud of what he created at the YMCA
“I think that is something he was really proud of
The number of lives he touched directly or even indirectly through the programs or services that started here under his watch
He will not be forgotten anytime soon and we will certainly make sure he is not forgotten here.”
His dedication to children led him to seek a seat in 1975 on the board of education
Ed Zelich said Wiltz prided himself on setting an example for others
“His wisdom and integrity made him a trusted figure within the district and beyond,” Zelich said
always striving for excellence and inspiring others to do the same
Ken commanded respect through his decisiveness and clear sense of authority
His balanced approach earned him admiration from his colleagues and the entire learning community
particularly his ability to maintain the students’ spirit while ensuring fiscal responsibility.”
And it was always comforting to me to know
that I could always trust that whatever decision he and the board made would be in the best interest of students
but when you refocus the problems back to make them about students
which is what Ken did and led others to do
but he would want us to shine and work together to continue to build this community
and that is what we are going to do in honor of him.”
Adele Hopkins and Elaine Pappasergi were elected to the school board in 2003 and spent 22 years serving alongside Wiltz
“I have always had such a deep respect for him,” Hopkins said
“That is because he always had the students
it was all about doing what is best for the school and his students
I always came to listen to his understanding
He was a smart man and was always there for all of the right reasons.”
Hopkins sat next to him as vice president for many years
“I remember the first meeting after I was elected
the first thing we did was make him president and he has been ever since,” she said
There was nothing he would not do to support those kids
Hopkins said while they had different leadership styles sometimes
“I think a lot of people learned a lot of things from Ken
Pappasergi called serving alongside Wiltz a privilege
“It was just such a privilege and honor to sit on that board with him,” she said
“I’m so heartbroken and it will take everyone a long time to absorb this loss
but he also wanted to make sure the teachers and taxpayers were taken care of.”
Pappasergi said Wiltz led longer than most
“He made sure we all worked together cohesively,” she said
“That was the best thing he could have ever done
to make sure the decisions we made as a group always came back to putting the kids
Barb Pepper has served on the board since 2013 and was a tenured teacher in the district
She is currently the board’s vice president
Pepper believes the type of man Wiltz embodied is hard to find
So it’s just a very emotional time for us all right now
He would have done anything he could to make sure he saw them become the best people they could be.”
Pepper said he had an “aura” about him that carried light with him no matter where he went
“There is a lot of life we have experienced together
but I am just so very honored to have been a part of his life because he truly made the school
my life and so many lives him around him better.”
Board member Tom Nutting said Wiltz was his favorite “cousin-inlaw.”
but I just loved him dearly,” Nutting said
and he received so much respect from everyone who knew him
He was the backbone of our district and such a good leader.”
He was asked by Wiltz to join the board for a two-year term several years ago
Nutting and Wiltz spent time together at St
Andrew the Apostle Parish’s annual Festival of Nations and at Dee’s Event Center in Charleroi to organize school supplies that were distributed to students this week
Nutting said he and Wiltz had an interaction he believes will stand the test of time
They left the event center to get coffee and refreshments for volunteers
you are my goombah,’ and we put our arms around each other and he told me I was his goombah too.”
Goombah is a nickname for a close friend or associate
especially used among Italian-American men
but looking back now I am so thankful for it,” Nutting said
“It’s so fresh in my mind and it’s really all I can think about
so many minutes over the course of so many years
Former Charleroi Area Solicitor Todd Pappasergi was taught by Wiltz as a young athlete
“It’s a devastating loss to the community because he was a champion of anyone who came out of Charleroi.”
Wiltz’s legacy will transcend municipal lines
“If you want to talk about someone who not only bled red and black
but really of the colors of the Mon Valley
Wiltz’s commitment to service extended beyond the school district
He was a longtime youth coach for Charleroi baseball and basketball and was an avid fan of Charleroi football
A lifelong member of the Charleroi Community Park Trustees
Wiltz had his name added in April to a sign leading to Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Charleroi as a thank you for his volunteer work that helped keep the facility up and running
the late Ron Monack’s name was added to a plaque leading in to the facility
Wiltz also saw his name on the plaque when it was revealed
Wiltz had been on the board since 1970 and was the longest current serving member on the board
Trustees Chairman Mark Alterici also learned the ropes from Wiltz and has considered it a privilege to work with him over the years
“I have had a long-term relationship with Ken
from a child playing baseball to serving on the trustees with him,” Alterici said
being able to serve with him and learn from him
He truly gave more to the community than most
He was one of the original guys down there cutting grass
who laid the foundation for the trustees and what we have now.”
a lot of organizations would have been worse off
the park would not be what it is today,” Alterici said
“I think I can speak for the entire board when I say it was an honor to have him
but we were so happy to be able to honor him and are very thankful he was there to see that
the Charleroi Masonic Lodge and Mon Valley Country Club and served on the board of directors for SPHS
Mon Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Washington-Greene County Job Training Agency
He was also a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a strong supporter of the Charleroi Area Education Foundation
John LaCarte got involved in many organizations because of the dedication he learned from Wiltz
It started when LaCarte was chosen as student representative to the CASD board of directors as a junior in 1983
“Ken was a tremendous cheerleader in my life
“He always made it a point to talk about my experiences in college and my career
Many of the boards I serve on now is largely in part because of Ken
There was truly no bigger advocate for the Mon Valley
always making a difference and he made me want to make a difference too.”
Wiltz had a way to find compromise that was unmatched
on various boards with various personalities all coming from different perspectives,” LaCarte said
“He was never going to come on a board to serve without making sure the right thing was done
I have a learned a lot from his emotional intelligence skills
it’s one of the many things he taught me.”
Washington County Judge Mike Lucas also learned from Wiltz
positive and always a problem solver,” Lucas said
“I saw first hand his ability to manage a meeting or reconcile with people who might be upset because he always listened and heard people out
He was a problem solver and there are not many people like him.”
It could be said Wiltz never met someone he wasn’t friends with
He filled a role as a fatherly figure in so many of the lives he has shaped
but to everyone who knew him his family came above anything else
A lifelong resident of the Charleroi Area School District
Kendra (Class of 2000) and Kenny (Class of 2002)
He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren
who is a current Charleroi Area School District student
Vitale said Wiltz put his family above all else
“He would want to be remembered for that above anything else.”
LaCarte said he admired the relationship he had with his wife
“You never saw one without the other,” LaCarte said
He also said Wiltz was in the prime of his life
“I can only imagine what a wonderful grandfather he was
he found a balance to always come home to be with them because they were most important

Orange — A woman who works at the Burger King on Highway 62 in Orange is charged with stabbing the manager during an argument
Isaac Henry with the Orange Police Department provided to KFDM/Fox 4 News
was jailed on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
Henry says officers responded to the reported stabbing at about 6:30 p.m
investigators learned that an employee and the manager were involved in a physical altercation
Officers found Wiltz nearby and took her into custody
Elizabeth Hospital where she was treated and released
The people of Wiltz will keep seeing them for a while: the cranes down in the valley
The commune is working on revitalisation and over the next ten years
at least 4,700 new residents could move to Wiltz
with the goal to increase purchasing power:
“We do believe that we will grow from 8,500 to 13,000 inhabitants with the projects currently known
I'm not talking about potential other projects
just those already known and actively in development
This would mean that from today's approximately €76 million in potential purchasing power
where a policlinic and medical centre are to be built
the main road is being turned into a so-called 'shared space' for both pedestrians and cars
we have also developed a strategic framework from the commune
through which we will support those working in commerce and hospitality
including with lower rents or other means to accommodate them."
For instance, cafés, and restaurants will be granted terrace space by the commune. In recent years, the commune has also purchased no fewer than 14 houses and a hotel, which are gradually being renovated – projects under the 'Pacte Logement' scheme
"The lower floors will become retail space
while the upper floors will be turned into housing units
It makes little sense to compete with the Pommerlach commercial zone
which offers 32,000m² of retail space compared to just 9,000m² in lower Wiltz
Bob Wetzel sees opportunities mainly in sectors the Germans refer to as "basic provision" – including food
and personal care – but notes that retail expansion beyond these areas faces tough challenges
"Our latest study confirms that competition from nearby shopping centres is fierce"
adding that only niche businesses stand a real chance of success
though such shops do still emerge from time to time
the centre of Wiltz is expected to be restructured and filled with life once again
Christina Mathieu says she is already seeing some business picking up
"If the main street becomes more attractive and has more shops
it’s a bit sad – you're fighting against something
You can really feel that more and more is happening."
the area around the train station is also set for a complete transformation
Right next to the entrance to the new neighbourhood 'Living with the Wiltz'
new shops and a park-and-ride facility will be created – where several thousand people already take the train daily
will run directly via Ettelbruck and Mersch to the capital – the local politicians' hopeful vision

The American St. Nick tells the remarkable true story of a handful of American soldiers who during the chaos of war, help bring Christmas back a small Luxembourg town, and unknowingly create a holiday tradition that continues to this very day!
Hearing this, Corporal Harry Stutz gets an idea. He gathers some fellow soldiers and together they organize a Christmas party for the children, a party that will include a special visit from St. Nicolas himself, thanks to a reluctant Corporal Richard Brookins.
Wearing the mass robes of the local priest and a crudely fashioned rope beard to complete the costume, St. Nicolas rides through town on an Army jeep, stopping to meet the children and passing out treats baked by the Army cooks or donated from the soldier’s care packages from home. Later the celebration continues with a party for all the children at the Wiltz Castle. It is a wonderful day for the children of Wiltz and for the American soldiers as well.
An amazing TRUE story of war, honor, luck and love, The American St. Nick is a thrilling and heart-warming holiday classic packed full of incredible details that will amaze, entertain and delight.

Remarkable Rochester: Reflections on the people
A Rochester soldier’s part in bringing cheer and hope to a town in Luxembourg during World War II has been given the stamp of approval
it’s two Christmas stamps issued by the Luxembourg government
hopped into a jeep and rode into the liberated town of Wiltz
Two girls in angel costumes sat beside him
Nick” handed out sweets to the village children
the candy supplied from the rations of Brookins’ fellow troops in the 28th Infantry Division of the U.S
One of the stamps shows Brookins, who was 22 then, riding into the village. The other shows him standing
Nick’s arrival was a special moment during World War II
a temporary relief for people whose village had been brutally occupied by German troops for four years and then liberated by American soldiers
the people of Wiltz were forbidden to have their St
Nick’s visit in 1944 was a brief return to normalcy
The time represented a reprieve for the American soldiers
they would find themselves fighting in the Battle of the Bulge
After the war, Brookins, who died in 2018 at age 96
the citizens of Wiltz didn’t know who he was
but he was found and went back to Luxembourg in 1977 for the St
Brookins visited classrooms in the Rochester area often to recount his wartime story
I wrote about his visit to BOCES 1 Creekside School class in Fairport
and they were eager to meet the book’s hero
stressing that he had gotten as much as he gave on that December day
The American soldiers had been engaged in heavy fighting
and the visit to Wiltz was a temporary reprieve
“It was so good for us,” he told the students
And we had all these little kids who were so happy
In 2014, Justin Murphy of the Democrat & Chronicle interviewed Brookins and told his story in moving detail
it's been amazing to me how that one little (event) in the war
has become so important," Brookins told Murphy
and the people come out in droves — they just want to see me
They want to see the American who represents all the Americans who gave them their freedom
'How come I'm lucky enough to be that person?' "
Fortunato of the Rochester Philatelic Association for alerting us to the Luxembourg stamps honoring Dick Brookins
Fortunato noted in an email that Brookins joins other Rochesterians who have been celebrated with stamps in their honor
For our part, let’s add Brookins’ name to the list of Remarkable Rochesterians that can be found at: https://data.democratandchronicle.com/remarkable-rochesterians/

a look at the famous recipe developed by René Arend from WiltzRené Arend grew up in Wiltz and trained as a chef in Strasbourg before moving to the US © Photo credit: Olde Raleigh - N.CSandra LOCHON
ShareAs McDonald’s prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary in Luxembourg this summer
few may realise that the global fast-food chain has a Luxembourger to thank for creating one of its most-loved products: chicken nuggets.René Arend
a native of Wiltz who trained as a chef in Strasbourg
he worked as a chef for many years at the Whitehall Club in Chicago
Arend initially resisted the idea of joining McDonald’s before relenting
I wanted to do for the people on the street what I was doing for the rich."
It took between 14 and 16 months of tests to perfect the product
it wasn't until 1983 that nuggets were officially added to the menu in the United States
The nuggets became available internationally the following year
particularly in the Grand Duchy and Germany
following the takeover of the area's two sites by the Kuwaiti group Q8
Arend stepped down as executive chef in 2004
leaving behind one of the world's most popular recipes
History books may only remember the name René Arend
but the source of inspiration for the Luxembourg chef was Robert C
It was this American professor who invented the concept of the nugget in the 1960s in his laboratory at Cornell University
Baker and his student Joseph Marshall created a recipe that enabled nuggets to survive both freezing and frying
Baker did not patent his recipe for chicken nuggets
instead mailing it to hundreds of companies
who opted for the chicken nugget with its four emblematic shapes: the bell
McDonald's sniffed out the opportunity and quickly patented Arend's slightly modified recipe in 1979

in front of the densification and extension pilot project planned for the Triangle Vert business park
Accompanied by the chairmen of two inter-municipal associations
economy minister Lex Delles (DP) on Wednesday afternoon presented a pilot project to be deployed in Ellange-Mondorf and Wiltz
It will enable SMEs in the two business parks to maximise the available surface area
Exactly 40 years after the launch of the Tetris game
which involves stacking bricks to occupy the entire width of a smartphone screen
economy minister (DP) on Wednesday afternoon relaunched a modern version for Luxembourg
Since the country’s buildable areas cannot be extended ad infinitum
and SMEs in successful business parks are in danger of suffocating
a new scheme will be tested at the Triangle Vert business park in Ellange-Mondorf and the Salzbaach in Wiltz
which have been granted to companies for 30 years
the idea is to allow them to build up to 30 metres high (instead of increasing the width of their buildings)
Companies would add one or two layers of surface area that they could use--depending on their activities--for production
They could even rent out the additional space to SMEs who meet the specifications for business parks
There is no question of tolerating businesses that have no connection with the SMEs already on site
And there is no question of accepting the satellite office projects that the Big Four are so fond of
or zone d’activité économique) are extended
the aim will be to optimise land use according to the needs of SMEs wishing to set up there
The local authorities involved in this pilot project have issued calls for applications so that they can gauge the appetite of these companies in terms of surface area and tailor the project to their needs
not to lose a single centimetre of surface area
The other dimension of the pilot project is to pool what can be pooled
Why create car parks for all the companies in an area if
you can have a single car park for everyone
Why have canteens or leisure areas in each company if we can imagine shared areas where everyone can cook in the same place or spend their lunch break in a small green park
Why not imagine shared crèches that would free employees from having to drop their children off elsewhere
The minister also added the idea of pooling green energy production resources
whether through wind turbines or a centralised biogas heating system
The double-page presentation of the project also mentions “a reflection on housing in order to offer employees of business parks the possibility of finding accommodation close to their work,” which recalls the government's desire to respond to the issue of housing for employees
as with the partial tax exemption of bonuses paid by companies for the purpose of renting accommodation for their employees will be introduced
The two zones selected in this first phase have another thing in common: an “ulterior motive” of communal development
“We want to create jobs and we don’t have enough land to do so
bearing in mind that Wiltz is set to welcome 3,000 new residents over the next few years,” explained Albert Waaijenberg
chairman of the Wiltz business park inter-municipal association
“We want to preserve the village status of Mondorf-les-Bains and be able to relocate any SMEs that wish to do so to this zone,” said Steve Reckel
chairman of the Triangle Vert inter-municipal association and mayor of Mondorf
He added that 80% of the employees working in this area do not live in Luxembourg
L to r: The president of the Syndicat intercommunal de la zone d’activités économiques de Wiltz Albert Waaijenberg
the president of the SIAER association of communes and mayor of Mondorf Steve Reckel
SIAER vice-president and mayor of Schengen Michel Gloden
And behind the apparent simplicity of this Tetris lie difficulties of various kinds
from adapting the legislation to adapting the infrastructure for delivering energy
which have mobilised teams from different ministries
The next steps should be to amend the general development plan (PAG) or special development plan (PAP) whenever necessary
then upgrade the infrastructure and finally construct the new buildings or extensions
say the promoters of the Ellange-Mondorf-Schengen project
six of the 48 companies in the Triangle Vert have expressed interest
A further 22 are on the waiting list and in discussions with the ministry of economic affairs to set up in the extension on Schengen territory
“There are no common rules,” explained Reckel
a different vision and a different investment
because its comodo only allows it to expand in width
others need more administration or more workshops
Others want to diversify and add a second trade to their core business
we did as the Romans did: we drew up the plots and we looked at who would get plots A
we’re going to do the complete opposite: we’re going to look at the needs of the company that wants to set up and then we’re going to design its plot
The new buildings are scheduled for completion around 2029-2030
