Tavs ceļvedis elektroauto un atjaunīgās enerģijas pasaulē
Gatavojoties bezpilota transportlīdzekļu izmēģinājumiem Zemgalē
sadarbībā ar projekta vadošo partneri no Somijas un iesaistītajām valsts institūcijām apzināti iespējamie maršruti
kuros Jelgavā un Aizkrauklē varētu veikt izmēģinājuma braucienus
Izprotot to, ka bezpilota transportlīdzekļu tehnoloģiju lietošana reālā satiksmē visā pasaulē joprojām ir jauna nozare
pasažierus vedot no Pils salas tējas namiņa līdz rekonstruētās Pasta salas aktīvās atpūtas zonai
no dzelzceļa stacijas līdz pilsētas centram
Projekts “Pārrobežu sadarbība pārejai uz videi draudzīgu autonomo (bezvadītāju) pirmās/pēdējās jūdzes sabiedrisko transportu” tiks īstenots no 2017
un tā kopējais budžets ir 3,8 miljoni eiro
no kā 2,8 miljonus EUR līdzfinansē INTERREG Baltijas jūras reģiona transnacionālās sadarbības programma
“Sohjoa Baltic” apvienojušies partneri no Dānijas
Vai Latvijā ir vieta šādiem eksperimentiem? Kādas ir tavas domas par bezpilota autobusiem? Droši dodies uz foruma sadaļu un izsaki savu viedokli

Latvia plans to establish a new international military base between the southern regions of Aizkraukle and Jekabpils
Latvian Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks said at a press conference on Tuesday
Estonia's southern neighbor will also be reinstating military conscription
Located fairly close to the border with Lithuania, most of the property where the military base is planned to be established currently belongs to Latvia's State Forests (LVM), LETA reported via Latvian public broadcaster LSM
Last week's NATO summit in Madrid ended with a commitment to significantly increase NATO deployments to the Baltics due to the increased threat posed by Russia
The Canadian-led NATO Battlegroup Latvia currently consists of nearly 2,000 troops
but the new commitment is for combat-ready groups of brigade size
but an increase in the number of troops will also require suitable infrastructure
support staff and social amenities as well
Establishing all of the above at a brand new site will be a major undertaking
Pabriks likewise announced plans to reintroduce conscription
for males in Latvia starting in 2023 — initially on a voluntary basis
The decision comes despite reservations regarding the matter expressed by the chief of the Latvian National Armed Forces earlier this year
According to information provided to the media by the Ministry of Defense
conscription in Latvia will be gradually reintroduced over the course of five years
Recruitment is slated to take place semiannually — on January 1 and July 1
conscription will be compulsory for all men aged 18-27
Service can be deferred by those continuing their studies until after graduation
Conscription will last for a period of 12 months
conscripts will receive €400 per month — below the current Latvian national minimum wage of €500 — plus travel expenses
Women will be able to sign up for conscription on a volunteer basis
Only citizens of Latvia meeting minimum health requirements will be admitted to conscript service
Latvia abolished compulsory conscription in 2007
switching in full to a professional military service backed by a National Guard militia
Lithuania abolished compulsory conscription in 2008
Sweden had likewise deactivated peacetime conscription between 2010 and 2017
Following the regaining of its independence in August 1991
Estonia established compulsory conscription late that same year
Conscription is compulsory in Finland as well

One of the three new electric trains deployed in Riga last week has already started experiencing technical problems
This means passenger transports will have to be carried out by the other two for now
as LETA was told by Pasažieru vilciens (PV) representatives
The company explained that a problem in the operation of the train’s current collector was found
Repair crew is already hard at work fixing the problem
PV representatives also added that one of the new trains also had problems with automated doors
but this problem has already been resolved
PV representatives explain that they have a maintenance contract signed with Czech Škoda Vagonka
Warranty is active for the first 340 000 km and for no longer than 30 months
Additional spare parts have minimal warranty terms
Defects uncovered during the warranty term have to be fixed within a short period of time after reports are received
A-level defects are to be fixed within 24 hours
The supplier has a duty to fix all defects found during the warranty period from their own pocket
as well as compensate losses caused by defects if the operating rules of electric trains
as well as the operating rules of the equipment necessary for the maintenance of electric trains are complied with
LETA previously reported that PV started providing railway passenger transport services on the route to Tukims
Aizkraukle and Skulte using three new electric trains on Friday
On the 16th of December new trains were deployed in Jelgava’s direction
PV has three new electric trains at the moment
20 electric train units have been supplied to Latvia so far
Škoda Vagonka plans to commission up to 19 electric train units by the end of the year
PV representatives explain that it is planned to receive all 32 trains by mid-2024
Once all new trains have been received and commissioned
it is planned to start compiling interval timetables for new trains
Currently it’s planned to deploy them in morning and evening hours
which traditionally see the most foot traffic
The first two Škoda Vagonka electric trains were delivered to Riga in June 2022
PV turnover in nine months of 2023 was EUR 44.256 million
The company’s profits are down 21% to EUR 458 074
PV was founded in 2001 as a result of domestic passenger transport services being separated from Latvian Railway’s main functions
Previously PV 100% belonged to Latvian Railway as its subsidiary
but in October 2008 it was reformed into a state company

Latvian Radio explored the museum with local museum specialists Dzintra Cepure and Ilzīte Ozoliņa.
One would be hard-pressed to find a better location for a Soviet museum
previously named Stučka (in honor of Pēteris Stučka
the head of the Bolshevik government in Latvia during the Latvian War of Independence) is a typical town for the Soviet era
constructed as it was for people working on the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Plant
While part of the exhibition focuses on the plant
testimonies in the form of objects and photos take up the most part of it
The museum is housed in the former culture club of the Aizkraukle kolkhoz
It has not been repaired since it was build
hence preserving an interior typical of the Soviet era
The exhibition starts off in a typical Soviet town square with the walls lined from the time the town was build and a parade of Soviet cars in the middle.
An effervescent water box is among the droller exhibits
Exhibits from the construction of the Pļavinas plant include rolling tractor parts nicknamed the "murderer of the Staburags" for the Staburags cliffs that were submerged as the plant was built
and in the center there's an alien-like deep sea diver costume.
"Such deep sea divers went underwater as recently as the 90s as the underwater parts of the plant are being regularly monitored
The equipment weights some 80 kilos and several people have to help the diver undress – as you can see
there are no buttons or zips in the costume," the museum experts said.
many people who had immigrated from across the Soviet Union chose to remain in Stučka
and a subsidiary of the State Electronics Factory was built here
The phones made there are also part of the exhibition

There's a library with Soviet books and the Red Corner with the flag of the Latvian SSR
People flocked there to listen to political messages
The center of the library has a portrait of Pēteris Stučka
Its legs are chopped off and the head is too small
But we've put it here all the same," said Cepure

After an interlude with the party leaders (and a Soviet-style bar)
a long hallway lined with propaganda posters – the Way to Communism – leads to a Soviet-era apartment.
"Now this was the dream of every Soviet citizen
And my mom had a washing machine like this," said Cepure
"I wouldn't say it is pleasant to remember as to how you had to do laundry with the Rīga washing machine
but it's a vivid impression nonetheless," said Cepure.

This is followed by sections dedicated to culture
And this entire vitrine is dedicated to sports life
We always have to rearrange it after we have visitors
as people simply cannot hold back from touching the spiked shoes or skiing boots
Meanwhile children are rather impressed by rotary phones
"They try putting their fingers everywhere and try to find buttons on the receiver
rotary phones are something very archaic," said Cepure
the basement hosts the exhibition part concerning the Soviet authorities and security services
KGB uniforms and police caps all prompt a selfie-spree at this part
The vast exhibition concludes with a medicine cabinet with instruments
a chamber for infants as well as a portable bed
called a raskladuška which was often used if there were too few beds at the hospital.

The head of the museum said that one of the goals for this museum was revealing people's lives during the Soviet era outside the usual head-shaking disapproval or irony
"We tried showing that you should not disregard that time
as you can't discard 50 years of a nation's life
"Another goal was showing people all of this and asking whether they really want to return to that era
The remaining two of our four cars of a brand new electric train supplied to Latvia from Škoda Group’s company Škoda Vagonka were delivered to the country by means of two secure trucks on 7 October
roof structures and the first two cars were delivered to Riga last week
This means three full electric train sets have been delivered to Latvia so far
The first one reached Riga at the end of June
Transportation of train sets from the Czech Republic to Latvia is done via cargo trucks through Poland and Lithuania
In Riga train cars will be put together in order to begin test drives
Both of the previously supplied electric trains are already used in test mode in Aizkraukle
Pasažieru vilciens JSC plans to receive all 32 electric trains
which are to be used for passenger transports
Each train set consists of four train cars
Each train set has a total of 436 passenger seats
All trains offer same-level boarding from passenger platforms
This not only makes boarding easy for all passengers
it also shortens passenger exchange times during stops
Boarding is also made easier thanks to wider doors
Train cars are also fitted with audio and visual information systems and high-speed Wi-Fi access
Top speed is close to 160 km/h (120 km/h with current trains)
It will be possible to reach top cruise speed in areas
After procurement of new electric trains Pasažieru vilciens JSC will be able to include these trains in timetables of active trains
This means that in morning and evening hours
New trains are planned to be used to carry passengers to and from Aizkraukle
The purchase of 23 new electric trains was coordinated with and thanks to funding from EU Cohesion Fund – EUR 114.211 million

Latvian Radio reports that passengers especially appreciate easier
more accessible boarding and quieter travel
The new trains will operate journeys in the direction of Aizkraukle
The new trains will gradually start running on all electrified routes – the Aizkraukle line and the Skulte line
notes that currently the train type is not indicated in the train timetables. “In the future
it is planned to develop a solution that envisages including information about the type of train on the interactive train movement map as well,” according to the company's social network entry
Latvian passenger rail carrier will receive all 32 electric trains fully ready for the Vivi train passenger service by mid-2024
Each train has seats for 436 passengers and standing spots for 454 passengers
The new trains are aligned with platforms to improve accessibility.
The design speed of the new trains is up to 160 km/h (currently 120 km/h)
The maximum speed will be able to be developed where railway infrastructure will allow it
The total cost of the whole new electric train project is EUR 257,889 million and the purchase of 23 new electric train configurations is planned with co-financing from the Cohesion Fund of the European Union of EUR 114,211 million
though that came off the back of a tender that started all the way back in 2015
First the Covid pandemic and then the war in Ukraine delayed delivery

Most of the property where the military base is planned to be built currently belongs to state forestry company "Latvijas valsts meži" (Latvian state forests)
It is fairly close to the border with Lithuania
The Ministry of Defense plans to take over 81 different plots of land with an area of 1,072 hectares in the territory of Aizkraukles and Jēkabpils counties for the creation of the Zalve military zone. The expropriation process will take place in accordance with a special law
"Along with the strengthening of national defense
the creation of the new military range will create new business opportunities
as well as contribute to the development of the region's infrastructure and economy," the Defense Ministry said in a statement
Local residents will be able to continue to gather mushrooms and berries in "most" of the military zone
and the national armed forces will not prohibit movement on regional and national roads
but "movement may be restricted for the duration of the military training
"The military zone will be established in an area rich in habitats and various bird species. The national armed forces will respect the requirements of environmental protection and treat nature with care," the Ministry said
adding that the creation and use of new military ranges would not endanger protected birds and their nesting places
In order to verify whether private properties are located in the planned territory of the Zalve military zone
members of the public are invited to contact the State Military Facilities and Procurement Center on telephone number 26177070

At present NATO forces are based at camp Ādaži near the Latvian capital
but the arrival of large numbers of reinforcements will mean not only that more bunk beds are required but that suitable infrastructure and services for soldiers
Establishing all of that on a virgin site will be a major undertaking
The announcement is likely to spark predictable fury in Russia
Pabriks also announced plans to reintroduce national military service for males from 2023, first on a voluntary basis and then in compulsory form at a later date. This comes despite reservations about national service being expressed by Latvia's defense chief in February this year
The information provided to the media by the Ministry of Defense shows that the defense service will be gradually introduced over the course of five years. From January 1
the first phase of implementation will take place
for which it will be possible to apply voluntarily.
It is expected that recruitment to the service will take place twice a year - on January 1 and July 1
It is planned that after a five-year transition period
the service will be compulsory for men aged 18 to 27
if a person at the age of 18 is still studying
they will be able to defer their service until after graduation.
and people can expect to be paid 400 euros plus travel expenses per month
slightly less than the national minimum wage of 500 euros
Latvia abolished mandatory military service in January 2007
fully switching to a professional military service backed up by a National Guard militia
