"This is the largest logistics deal in Latvia since 2018
The transaction is expected to be closed within several months," said a release.
However, as the release did not mention the value of the deal
and representatives of the parties declined to tell LSM the price
the claim about it being the biggest deal of recent years cannot be verified
Bergi LC is around 50,000 m2 in size and is located on the edge of Riga
The property was built in 2008 and is leased to 2 main tenants: DO IT
a Danish importer and distributor of home furniture operating under the retail name JYSK
a supplier of branded consumer good to the grocery
The property was acquired by EfTEN Real Estate Fund 4, a fund managed by Estonia's EfTEN Capital AS
the largest commercial real estate fund management company in the Baltics. The acquisition will be financed by SEB Latvia
According to EfTEN Capital Latvia CEO Viktors Savins
"[The] logistics segment currently provides for one of the most interesting return stories
Bergi LC suits our institutional portfolio well
due to its strategic and rapidly developing micro location in Riga city
Bergi municipality is an ideal location for a logistics centre intending to supply the north/east regions (Scandinavia and CIS)
and represents one of the best prime locations for logistics in Riga
the High Bay Warehouse and modern build of the property
combined with its ideal location ensure its future against alternative uses”
According to Lords LB Baltic Fund III fund manager Efim Hiterer
“Bergi LC disposal is an important milestone in our Baltic Fund III exit process
Agreeing on divestment of already the second asset in recent few months shows that our managed assets have a positive demand in the market
and we are aiming to proceed with successfully exiting the fund.”
During 2020 there have already been over 50M EUR of logistics transactions
40% of the total transaction volume in Latvia

The Atlantic Airways Aviation Academy has officially opened its doors
with the Faroese company hoping its two cutting-edge full-flight simulators (FFS) — including a Thales AW139 level D device that can be paired with a mixed-reality hoist trainer — will draw operators from across Europe and beyond to the small Nordic country
The academy sits in a brand-new custom-designed building a short walk from Vágar Airport, on the most western of the major islands that comprise the Faroes. The airport is home to the company’s fixed- and rotary-wing fleets.
The entry and communal spaces are light and open, with large panels of windows that allow light to pour in. The academy has three classrooms and four briefing rooms, with huge windows across the hallway from them allowing visitors to see the simulators in action. As well as the level D AW139 FFS, the academy is home to an Airbus A320neo simulator produce by SIM International.
Hans Erik Jakobsen is manager of helicopter operations and head of training at Atlantic Airways. A pilot for many years, he has flown in simulators produced by va range of manufacturers during that time.
“The goal was never to build a standard simulator,” he explained. “The goal was to build a simulator that corresponds to the demand for search-and-rescue in our surrounding neighboring countries — and that we have achieved.”
The operator ultimately chose Thales to create the AW139 device, which replicates the exact customization of Atlantic’s own SAR-equipped models, from searchlights and forward-looking infrared cameras, to mission systems such as the ability to program search patterns or fly automatic transitions.
It allows pilots and operators to train for complex offshore and onshore missions in adverse weather conditions, such as those experienced in the Faroes.
“What is so special with Thales is the suspension, or the motion system [at the base of the simulator],” said Jakobsen. “It is gliding up and down the slides [that form the simulator’s base], and it gives a totally completely quiet motion. You don’t hear the motion, you don’t hear any traction or cylinders or anything. It is just like a helicopter. It flows in the air. That’s what amazed me so much.”
Remi Du Peloux, COO of Thales Training & Simulation, told Vertical that it was a two-year project to design, build and certify the AW139 simulator for Atlantic.
“We are — in terms of technology, in terms of capacity, of function inside the simulator — very close to the reality — to the real helicopter,” he said. “It’s one of our major points, to be very close and to follow the needs from the different customers.”
Atlantic also liked the independence offered by a Thales simulator, which Jackobsen said allows the operator complete autonomy.
“We decide ourselves what we are doing, which clients we have, how we behave, [and] how much we take for it,” he said. “This means a lot for us, and was a major thing in our consideration.”
One of the major leaps forward with Atlantic’s setup is the ability to pair the FFS with the mixed reality hoist trainer, which is also provided by Thales. The hoist trainer recreates the side of the cabin with an open door and hoist outside.
The operator wears a headset that immerses them in the virtual world — but allows them to see their hands and operate a physical cable hoist with a hoist control grip. This allows for a simulated payload to be raised or lowered on the hoist as they would on the real aircraft.
The hoist operator’s view is synchronized with the movement of the FFS, allowing a seamless training experience between pilot and crew.
“The company thought it was a good idea [to add the mixed reality trainer], because what we are trying to attract are all the rescue operators around us, because they have nowhere to go to train as we can here,” said Jakobsen.
Up until now, Atlantic Airways’ staff of nine pilots had to travel to Doha, Qatar, to complete simulator training with Gulf Helicopters’ AW139 FFS.
Jakobsen said the idea of having a simulator available in-house — rather than travel around the world to one — had been in his mind for many years. He recalled eventually pitching it to Bergi shortly before the pandemic hit.
“I said, ‘Why not just establish a simulator center in the Faroes? We have the instructors, we have the helicopters, we have the airplanes, we have the AOC [air operator certificate] and we have the ATO [approved training organization],’ ” said Jakobsen. “ ‘[People] can come here to train with us as we go everywhere else to train. We have the ability.’ ”
She told him “the future belongs to those who think big” — and the idea was presented to the board, and a business case was built before the idea was sent for government approval (as the company is government-owned).
“We looked at how many [AW139] simulators there are, how many are coming onto the market, how many AW139s are produced each year and how large the fleet is,” said Jakobsen. “There is a good business case.”
In addition to providing initial, recurrent and renewal training for Atlantic Airways’ own cadre of nine pilots and eight hoist operators, the academy is open to third parties. Atlantic Airways’ own instructors can be used, or operators can provide their own.
“We are fortunate to have helicopters,” said Jakobsen. “We have an AOC, so we can provide both the simulator training and we can provide the aircraft part, which is required after the training.”
The academy’s two simulators are certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and Jakobsen said Atlantic would be pursuing U.K. Civil Aviation Authority approval.
“At least 50 percent of the inquiries that we get are from the U.K.,” said Jakobsen.
While the academy has only just officially opened, it has already had several customers come through to use the simulators.
“The reception has been extremely positive,” said Jakobsen. “Of course, we treat people nice — that is in our culture, we like people to feel welcome. But it’s not enough just to welcome people, you need to have the quality there. We have a combination of both.”
Bergi said the academy will help push Atlantic Airways to new heights.
“With our Aviation Academy, we are not just securing the future of the Faroese aviation, we are creating opportunities, setting new global standards and ensuring that generations of pilots and rescue crews will be trained to the highest level.”

because a Spinal Tap sequel is on its way to once again capture the sights
the sounds and the smells of the iconic rock band
the very long-awaited Spinal Tap II is in the works
over 40 years after the seminal music mockumentary walked the fine line between stupid and clever
The original movie is considered to be one of the greatest comedy films of all time
Here is everything we know so far about the much-anticipated sequel
The fly-on-the-wall documentary sees filmmaker Martin "Marty" Di Bergi (played by actual director Rob Reiner) follow English rock band Spinal Tap on their 1982 United States concert tour to promote their new album
Safe to say the tour doesn’t go brilliantly
as the band encounter issues with backstage catering
There aren’t many details regarding what we can expect
other than the fact that the band will get back together again after an extended absence
Di Bergi will once again capture everything on film
The Princess Bride’s Christopher Guest will return as the confused Nigel Tufnel
Better Call Saul’s Michael McKean returns as David St Hubbins and The Simpsons star Harry Shearer will once again be Derek Smalls
Rob Reiner will be back as Martin "Marty" Di Bergi
Fran Drescher reprises her role as Bobbi Flekman (“you know
you know”) and Paul Shaffer returns as Artie Fufkin
Tony Hendra won’t be back as the band’s long-suffering manager
There are some huge names making an appearance
Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith will feature
Taskmaster star Kerry Godliman is among the cast
he is also known for the likes of When Harry Met Sally and Stand By Me
Reiner has said in a new interview that he expects the movie to land in the “spring or summer” of 2025
and then sometime in September we’ll start showing it to distributors
and we’re hoping to have it out sometime late spring or early summer of next year.”

A search is continuing for the missing after parts of the structure collapsed and led to flooding at Enel’s power station near Bologna
An explosion at a hydroelectric plant in northern Italy has killed at least three workers and injured five others
The blast on Tuesday was at power company Enel’s decades-old Bergi plant
Regional fire chief Francesco Notaro told local media that part of the nine-story underground structure collapsed
causing flooding at depths of up to 60 meters (200 feet)
Video provided by firefighters showed smoke rising from the underground at the lakeside plant

Atlantic Airways has spread its wings just a bit further
the national airline of the Faroe Islands inaugurated service to the United States this week
with hopes of boosting both inbound and outbound travel for the islands
We acquired the A320neo and knew it had more potential
We started looking at what the best way was to take advantage of the new airplane
The new route comes with plenty of challenges
will the airline educate Americans on where the Faroe Islands are (north of Scotland
between Iceland and Norway) and why they should visit (incredible natural beauty
how will the airline overcome technical and operational challenges to make the service a profitable one
CEO Jóhanna á Bergi recognizes these challenges and more
but continues her push to see just how far the small airline can extend its range in support of the Faroese people
Perhaps most notable about the route launch is that it comes towards the end of the peak tourism season in the Faroe Islands
That’s rarely a good time to launch new service
Bergi recognizes this challenge and knows better than to try to force the situation
With just one flight per week it is relatively easy for the carrier to drop the service and shift the aircraft back to markets in greater demand
sees very strong numbers in the winter with the Faroese looking to warm up and dry out for a few days
The Stewart service will be suspended from the end of October 2023
but Bergi is adamant it is coming back in 2024
the company will have more time to build its sales channels for the market
alternate airport 90 minutes away from the desired destination adds to the challenges for the route
And Stewart International Airport (SWF) was not the first choice for Atlantic Airways as a gateway
“We were looking at JFK and at Newark; we know they are much closer to New York City,” Bergi shared
“We are only flying once a week and those airports are very crowded and expensive to operate from,” she noted
counter space and ground handling were significantly more expensive
especially for the limited number of flights
Housing the crew who overnight with the aircraft was also a challenge
Eventually Atlantic Airways and the Port Authority struck a deal with service to Stewart
and Bergi appears confident in that selection
including the expectation that it will return to Stewart when the route resumes in 2024
Service once a week to New York does not a transit hub make
Despite its location just a couple hundred miles east of Iceland
relatively well positioned to handle flows of traffic between Europe and North America
Atlantic Airways will never become a major connecting hub like Reykjavik
and neither the airline nor the Faroese people appear keen to try
physical constraints at Atlantic’s home base at Vagar Airport inhibits growth potential
Limited ramp capacity at Vagar means the fleet will necessarily remain relatively small
Operating to multiple US destinations daily is simply not possible
And it would deviate from the airline’s core mission of serving as “a lifeline for the Faroese people,” Bergi explained
Westbound the service departs relatively late in the afternoon
too late for passengers to have dinner in New York City on arrival
On the return the carrier operates a daytime flight eastbound that arrives just after 10p local time in the islands
The sole runway extended to 5,900′ a decade ago and almost certainly cannot grow further
and options for larger planes or longer routes begin to quickly dwindle
The carrier also has not pursued ETOPS certification for its operations
these factors limit which routes are possible and how many passengers can be carried
While excited to stretch the service range of the A320neo as much as possible
Bergi shared that the New York flight is typically limited to 140-150 passengers on the 180 seat A320neo because of the limited runway length
That’s good news for passenger comfort on board with many middle seats likely to be open
But the company must also account for the limited revenue potential it faces without the ability to fill the cabin
Fares on the route – starting around $450-500 each way – reflect that
Bergi knows the carrier must also compete with one-stop options; it cannot price the market in a vacuum
But she also believes passengers will accept a premium priced in to the nonstop service
especially without the overnight flight eastbound
Bergi also knows that the Faroe Islands are not Iceland
The island nation is too small to support a massive inbound tourism boost that would come with being a major transit hub
“We have a focus on sustainability and our nature is very precious to us,” she explained
“so we are not going for the mass tourism experience.” Given the limited infrastructure on the islands this should not be too much of a surprise
Even if the passengers showed up they likely would not have hotels
Atlantic Airways does work with the tourism board on strategic market development
though the United States is not yet one of those key markets
And its goal with the US route is a roughly 50/50 split of inbound and outbound travelers
That’s somewhat lower than the inbound numbers from other Scandinavian markets
mostly owing to Americans not knowing the Faroe Islands exist
Bergi did share that the country sees an interesting overflow from Americans who visit Iceland
Many of those who eventually make it to the Faroes note that they first learned about the islands on a prior Iceland trip
Perhaps the company will eventually pick up some visitors planning to stop over in the Faroes for a few days before continuing to one of the other destinations in the Atlantic Airways route network
Codeshare and interline agreements with other airlines help support that plan
But vacation packages and stopover fares are not in the cards
Bergi would rather lean on partners for creating trip bundles
than trying to get into that business directly
The airline is a small operation with a small staff and Bergi is laser-focused on executing on the company’s core competency of point-to-point air service while letting others handle those broader offerings
Finally, Bergi did note the work Atlantic Airways is doing with Visit Faroe Islands to extend the duration of the peak tourism season – currently just 10-12 weeks/year – and also to increase the types of travel the Islands support
Efforts to increase conference and event travel are underway
the market for travel between the US and the Faroe Islands is a small one
capturing significantly more market share now that it has the planes to make the nonstop trip happen
And with the heavy lifting of gaining US approvals and meeting the various security and regulatory requirements complete
now the company can focus on delivering that service

I bet there is like one guy in the Faroes who thinks this is great because he spends a week in the Catskills every late summer
There were a handful of passengers on board by happenstance who just wanted to go to the USA to visit
they get way more than one week of vacation a year
I’m skeptical of the route economics
But with the limited frequencies it could work
especially if they can drum up some package offers for inbound tourism
We’re flying there next week from Stewart
I live in the Hudson valley so this is actually a convenient flight for us
I’m glad they have no plans of being like Iceland
Now it feels like Cancun as it is filled with tourists
I’m glad to hear that the Faroese have no plans to turn it into that
Strongly recommend pre-booking a taxi or sorting the rental car
The flight gets in to Vagar pretty late and there won’t be a bus option into town
And also either bring your own food or prepay for the meals
That’s something of a shortcoming in the offering IMO
I’ve got another post with more about the seats and such coming

A five-man team of national riders spearheaded by this season’s most successful cyclist
Alanzo Greaves and National Road Race Champion
Raynauth Jeffrey departed for Suriname this morning to compete in the annual four-stage Bigi Bergi Road race
Michael Anthony and Enzo Matthews on a quest to secure the top honours for Guyana when the event pedals off on Friday
The formidable five-man unit was chosen by the selection committee of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF)
Brian Allen will act as manager while former national rider
Dwayne ‘Road Hog’ Gibbs will take up the coaching duties
Allen told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he expects the team of riders “to ride at a high level in Suriname.”
Allen also disclosed that the first stage rolls off on Friday at 14:00hrs
followed by the second stage on Saturday also at 14:00hrs
On Sunday morning a criterium race will be held followed by the time trials in the afternoon
Greaves was confident of his chances as well as his teammates
“I know from my performance as well as the performances of Raynauth
Michael and Orville for this year have been outstanding
The top rider of the annual event will earn $US1000 and a trophy while the second
fourth and fifth place finisher will pocket $US800
Guyana’s original team comprised six riders
Jeffrey and Hinds but Williams returned to the USA and DeNobrega and McKay pulled out because of financial constraints
The cyclists and officials are scheduled to return to Guyana on Monday

president of the Roraima Bikers Club and manager of the club team that participated in this year’s annual Bigi Bergi four-stage cycle meet in Suriname last weekend is dissatisfied with the organization of the event
He added:”The officiating at the finishing line was grossly inadequate
The camera used was held manually and was focused from side on to the finish line and could not pick up the cyclists’ numbers which were affixed to the lower back of their shirts.”
“Enzo Matthews finished in the second group and his position was credited to Mario King of Roraima Bikers Club.”
Allen said there were numerous other mix-ups that were not rectified
“Reports for each stage were not received until the start of the following stage
checks and queries to authenticate these reports were very difficult
and queries that were not properly addressed
I am of the firm conclusion that the Guyanese contingent did better than was reported by the Bigi Bergi officials
Alonzo Greaves should have been on the podium
Raul Leal and Paul DeNobrega made a clean sweep of the junior places,” Allen said
Metrics details
Geoplanidae (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida) feed on soil invertebrates
Observations of their predatory behavior in nature are scarce
and most of the information has been obtained from food preference experiments
Although these experiments are based on a wide variety of prey
this catalog is often far from being representative of the fauna present in the natural habitat of planarians
As some geoplanid species have recently become invasive
obtaining accurate knowledge about their feeding habits is crucial for the development of plans to control and prevent their expansion
we perform a metagenomic analysis to identify the in situ diet of two endemic and codistributed species of geoplanids from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: Imbira marcusi and Cephaloflexa bergi
We have tested four different methods of taxonomic assignment and find that phylogenetic-based assignment methods outperform those based on similarity
both species change their feeding habits among the different sample locations
the integration of metagenomics with phylogenetics should be considered when establishing studies on the feeding habits of invertebrates
as it is impossible to exactly reproduce an organism’s natural habitat
Another limitation of these experiments is that the offered prey species often do not occur in the natural habitat of geoplanids
and this limitation also has implications for the results
primarily affecting planarians with a more specific diet
the fact that most of these experiments provide a single choice
meaning that prey are offered to the same individual every few hours
the sequence of previous offers and individual preferences of the specimens can distort the results

highlighted with different colors: Oligochaeta (grey)
bergi (secondary predator) preying on this Obama species
We consider that a plausible hypothesis because CbSantoA is the only dataset where we found assignments to both Gastropoda and to Obama
so the difference could be due to the use of ClustalW2 or Gblocks or the fact that SAP samples 10,000 trees and MAP only 1
As the MAP pipeline agreed 99.28% of the cases with the consensus assignment
it should be the reference method when establishing future similar studies
only feeding on earthworms and possibly on land leeches
preying on a wide range of arthropods and possibly on other geoplanids
the fact that in the locality with a similar number of individuals (Cubatao
we found the two extremes with Cb having the maximum diversity of prey and Im having only one prey species
could be feeding on the niche with the least competition it has access to in each locality
The shared habit of preying on other geoplanids between SantoA and Cubatao may be attributable to the fact that these localities are the closest ones among those that were sampled (25 km apart)
so their habitats would be presumably similar
marcusi would still be preying on endemic earthworms
Predatory behavior would have been under strong divergence selection
reducing competition and allowing different species to coexist in the same habitat
Sequencing only the digestive content and not the whole individual could also help to improve the quality of the retrieved data because less predator DNA would be present in the extracted samples
Sampling localities of the specimens used in this study: Cantareira (A)
The map spans the states of São Paulo (SP)
The localities are referred to as the following: Cantareira (Parque Estadual da Cantareira)
SantoA (Reserva Biológica do Alto da Serra de Paranapiacaba) and Itatiaia (Parque Nacional de Itatiaia)
we have samples of specimens from all four localities
samples are only available from Cubatao and SantoA
Each of these six combinations of species-locality constitutes a dataset
The datasets are named according to which species (Im for I
The extracts were incubated with 15 µL of RNase A at 10 mg/mL for two hours at 37 °C
The DNA was quantified with an Invitrogen Qubit Fluorometer 2.0 (Broad Range kit)
A paired-end library was prepared with Illumina TruSeq DNA Library Prep kit (400 bp insert size) and run in an Illumina HiSeq 2000 (2 × 100 bp) sequencing device by Macrogen (Korea)
scaffold tolerance (1) and maximum gap difference (0)
The main purpose of generating the NGS data was to obtain molecular markers from the genomes of I
we could not proceed to the application of the taxonomic assignment methods without first performing adequate filtering
To analyze such a volume of information demands a great amount of time and computing power
and because the bulk of sequences will not contribute any information
the analysis of the entire dataset would not be useful
we designed a filtering pipeline to retain only the most informative sequences
reducing the amount of data processed allowed us to trace the sequences through the future analysis pipeline and supervise
This filtering pipeline was structured in three steps and outlined in the following paragraphs: 1) remove the sequences that do not match any others represented in the database
2) maintain only the most informative sequences and 3) purge conflicting sequences
which we also used for the following parsing steps
The next phase of filtering was consistent with the need to keep only the most informative sequences
which are the ones with enough information to allow us to determine taxonomic assignments to ranks such as family
We set the threshold for keeping a sequence with at least one BLAST hit longer than 200 nucleotides at the 95% or higher level of similarity
This threshold was determined after some fine-tuning
with softer thresholds leading to flagrant false positives and misleading assignments
suicide vectors or sequences with annotation problems in the database
we used the sequences suspected of belonging to the sequenced specimens as a positive control of our methodology
As land planarians belong to the order Tricladida and the NGS data that we recycled came from DNA extractions from whole specimens
the lack of Tricladida assignments in the results would be a sign that our methodologies failed
the presence of Tricladida assignments in the results
would certify that both the filtering and the analysis pipelines worked properly
we determined whether these assignments came from the sequencing of the specimen itself or the sequencing of a prey item
Having four different assignments for each sequence allowed us to both benchmark the behavior of the methods when applied to the same data and make a consensus assignment for each sequence while accounting for the peculiarities of each method
it was important to compare it to other methodologies
Given a selection of sequence topper BLAST hits (in blue
the lowest common ancestor (LCA) algorithm quickly computes their LCA (in red)
These trees map the taxonomic annotation of each clade (the lowest taxonomic rank that includes all the sequences of that clade) onto their nodes
so the taxonomic rank of the sister clade to the sample sequence is identified
the posterior probability (PP) of the query sequence forming a monophyletic group with a given taxon is calculated as the fraction of sampled trees where the sister clade to the sample sequence is a member of that taxon
the taxonomic assignment was made to the LCA of the most terminal clade where the query sequence belonged with a PP ≥0.95
All the analyzed sequences (241) are deposited in the Dryad Digital Repository: https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.bg1kq06

The causes of the origin and maintenance of extant biodiversity in the Neotropics —an area of high biodiversity value— have been discussed for decades. Dominating hypotheses point out Pleistocene glaciations —which took place between 2.5 years ago and 20,000 years ago— or Tertiary tectonic geological reorganizations Tertiary, which occurred much earlier, as the main factor.
According to the new study, extant biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil originated and has been shaped by complex interactions between ancient geological events and more recent evolutionary processes, whereas Pleistocene climate changes had a minor influence in generating present-day diversity, even if they influenced its distribution.
Most studies aimed at defining and studying high biodiversity areas focus on organisms with high-dispersal ability. However, these models could not be good indicators to detect small areas with high biodiversity, so it makes difficult to understand the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity. Innovatively, the study carried out by UB research group is focused on the land planarian (Cephaloflexa bergi), a low-dispersal organism which inhabits soil ecosystems.
Land planarians, an animal model of phylogeographic studies
Authors explain that “to formulate an efficient conservation policy, a good understanding of spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns and their underlying evolutionary mechanisms is required”. “For this reason —they add—, it is necessary to work with organisms with a low-dispersal ability that are particularly sensitive to changes in the environment”.
The research group performed a comparative analysis of DNA sequence variation of land planarian by means of a nuclear and a mitochondrial gene. By applying Bayesian inference methods (Approximate Bayesian Computation, ABC), two scenarios proposed to explain the biodiversity of Southern Atlantic Forest region were evaluated.
To improve biodiversity management and conservation
The study published in the journal Heredity highlights that land planarians are an advantageous biological model for making phylogenetic and, particularly, fine-scale evolutionary inferences. Furthermore, the study has enabled experts to propose appropriate conservation policies, for example the need to extend the boundary of the Serra de Mar corridor to the South in order to reconnect some areas that were linked in the past when the Serra do Mar was a continuous forest landscape.

What happens when a plane configured for short haul travel finds itself flying across the North Atlantic
Atlantic Airways’ new service between the Faroe Islands and New York brings huge potential for travelers looking to easily move between the two markets
But it also delivers an interesting hybrid service model
but also still enough ancillary options along the way to hint at that option
The carrier’s inaugural flight from Vagar to New York-Stewart on an A320neo presented an opportunity to sample the offering
but it also is not the more robust design Recaro offers on its “comfort line” for longer flights
The adjustable headrests and integrated tablet holders are nice wins for the passenger experience
With the USB-A power and integrated tablet holders the seats do offer some additional comfort
spins the fuel efficiency angle on this decision
but the thinner seat padding becomes noticeable as the flight wears on
The carrier also chose to only offer an economy class cabin on board
We did not think it made sense to have different classes of service to separate our people that way.” And for most shorter routes
especially when competing against European carriers which offer a blocked middle seat in their premium cabin
Will it matter when competing against airlines crossing the Atlantic
Especially when not pricing as a discount operation
For the longer flights to the USA the short runway at Vagar means the aircraft must trade off passenger payload for fuel
westbound flights to the United States are expected to operate with 40-50 seats blocked on any given trip
This means most passengers will have an empty middle seat in their row unless they choose not to
The shape of Recaro’s 3530s does offer some relief for knees on board
making the 31″ pitch layout reasonably spaced
But for those who want a bit more space the exit rows on the A320neo – row 11 does not recline and 12 does recline – offer a few extra inches
the airline charges for advance seat selection
one of a few areas where the experience trends more towards the unbundled
With a seven(ish) hour flight snacks and drinks are a much more important part of the passenger experience. For Atlantic Airways that is a paid offering, even on the longer trips
the food must be ordered 24 hours or more in advance
The company sent multiple emails reminders about the preorder requirement but
each time it did not accurately reflect that I had already ordered the meal
Soft drinks and alcohol also come with a cost
though on the inaugural they were offered complimentary to travelers
and tea were regularly offered throughout the flight
Charging for meals likely is motivated by a combination of revenue and space on board
The rear galley in particular is configured with less stowage space than an aircraft that would typically operate the longer services
but both options from the paid menu were served cold on the NY-bound inaugural
Atlantic Airways is a long-time customer of AirFi
deploying the wireless inflight entertainment service on board
The system offers more than 50 movie titles
plus TV shows and some YouTube shorts as well
A handful of games and a moving map round out that platform
One challenge experienced on the longer trip was that the AirFi boxes ran low on battery power
which eventually affected their Wi-Fi signal on board
Atlantic Airways will likely need to ensure that the systems are fully charged at boarding rather than using ones that perhaps have made an additional trip earlier in the day (the aircraft made a Barcelona turn
which would’ve added 5ish hours of usage that day
Battery anxiety should disappear soon, however, as the carrier shifts to a powered installation model for the AirFi system. That is tied to its plans to activate the AirFi LEO messaging and connectivity offering
Atlantic Airways was the launch customer for the system, back in October 2018. It has since reiterated its commitment several times
including the CEO saying so during the inaugural trip
But the program, most recently expected to go live in Q2 of this year hit further delays
A redesign of the on-board hardware layout necessitated additional engineering work and approvals
AirFi remains confident in the program and that installs are coming
Certainly it came with a bit of extra fun and excitement because this was the inaugural
But the offering is perfectly serviceable for that route
Knowing that there are going to be plenty of empty middle seats certainly helps take the edge off
it is a (probably) more affordable and faster route to and from the Faroe Islands
That’s a very nice win for passengers

We’ll assume this is all a warm-up for the This is Spinal Tap follow-up currently in production, with the plan to release a sequel on the 40th anniversary of the original. “Hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one?” says director Rob (Marty Di Bergi) Reiner

The plot will involve manager Ian Faith’s widow finding a contract that proves Spinal Tap owes her one more concert
we all know it will take more than a few cold sores to ultimately come between them

The actor and filmmaker has also revealed that Paul McCartney
Elton John and Garth Brooks will feature in the project
It has also been confirmed that original stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer will return as the members of the fictional metal band, with Reiner reprising his role as the hagiographer Martin ‘Marty’ Di Bergi. It is reported that the new movie will take its cues from Martin Scorsese’s 1976 farewell to The Band, The Last Waltz
“The only thing that matters is that you get people who are good at improvising,” Reiner explained to the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast the improvised dialogue in This Is Spinal Tap
“You have to get people who feel comfortable doing that … then you’re off to the races.”

The worst thing you could do is just load it up with
they may be tangents and things that take away from the drive of the film.”
According to Variety
the movie package launched sales at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and was originally scheduled for March 19th
with an updated release date still to be announced

“How ill white hairs become a fool and jester!”—”Henry IV”
which eventually turns out to be a reaction to the contents of his pants

his attempts at creating an image of fantastic virility ruined by something as mundane as a metal detector
Over the thirty years following its release on March 2, 1984, “This is Spinal Tap” has become a comedy classic
or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress
it was picked for preservation by the United States National Film Registry in 2002
It has become a descriptor in everyday language to signify pretentiousness and oversell
becoming one of the few films that can be enjoyed on its own terms by the Baby Boomers
might not have become more popular than Jesus or The Beatles
but their legacy is nonetheless solid. “This is Spinal Tap” is a comedy
But as with so many comedies of the Aristophanian school
the film could also be regarded as a tragedy. At its core
“This is Spinal Tap” is a film about failure
and therefore emblematic of one of man’s greatest dichotomies: The gap between who we think we are
You’re the same decaying organic matter as everything else.” On some level we know this is true
and yet most of us spend our lives avoiding or denying it.
“This is Spinal Tap” is built on this struggle.
The band is constantly confronted with evidence of their mediocrity
They mistake an approaching gang of groupies for their own
when it turns out their interest is directed towards an Eddie Van Halen-type ’80s rock star
The radio plays a song from their early years
but the DJ bookends it by deeming them a second-rate band that enjoyed only middling success
They’re sorted summarily into the “‘Where Are They Now’ File.” Life picks them up for a moment
Their fantasies of who they are get crushed by the palpable enormity of reality. Even in the film’s most famous moment
when Nigel tells Di Bergi that the band’s amps go to 11
the facile stupidity is emblematic of the band’s own
It’s not just the band members who project a false image of personal importance and fearsome artistry. Band manager Ian Faith (Tony Hendra) appears to be in control
but is in way over his head; he wields a cricket bat to channel his frustrations (which tower over the Stonehenge figurine he commissions)
is unable to book the band into decent-sized venues
and mismanages the release of the band’s latest record
David’s conniving girlfriend Jeanine reckons herself an astrologer and a musical maven
yet she can’t even pronounce “Dolby.” Even our cinematic guide Di Bergi is lost
He wants to be a come across as a confident documentarian
but this wish is undercut in film’s first scene by his shifty
unsure demeanor. And yet still they hold on to their self-created
The band’s pathologies may be universal
but the details are rooted in experiences that were unique to England in the decades after World War II
When all the post-war rationing and misery finally ended
as well as the records left behind by the GIs or brought over by merchant seamen from the United States
forced people indoors to practice their instruments
Nigel and David hail from the fictional town of Squatney—a funny invention
but symbolic of many real-life rockers’ roots
The Animals famously sang that they ‘got to get out of this place’—which was both literal and metaphorical
dusty towns of the industrial north and the petit-bourgeois south were suffocating
So was the Greatest Generation’s ceaseless
Britain’s Baby Boomers had to escape
they anchored themselves to their music and their musical personae
Spinal Tap’s arrested development is representative of many rockers’ inability to grow up—a condition that became not just tolerated but enshrined starting in the 1950s
The postwar period was first in which Western adolescents were treated
suspended in developmental limbo between childhood and adulthood
This was a huge change from every previous era of human civilization
which treated young adults as grownups that had only recently gone through puberty and still had a lot to learn but had damn well better hurry up and get a proper job anyhow
The rock ‘n’ roll spirit embraced this new sense of demographic entitlement with a vengeance
and inspired all manner of related slogans
including The Who’s “Hope I die before I get old” and the counterculture left’s “Don’t trust anyone over 30.”
Spinal Tap is part of that same demographic
but its members and hangers-on are arguably even less self-aware (i.e
The musicians can only sustain their false self-image by never
The band members wear their child-like mentality as armor
it is to their id that David and Nigel revert
The Swiss psychiatrist identified puer aeternus
Latin for “eternal boy,” as an archetype
structural elements of the human psyche.” The band members age physically
They reckon themselves to be Peter Pans when in fact they are just a bunch of Lost Boys
In one of the most moving scenes of the film
Di Bergi talks to David following Nigel’s decision to quit the band
David lumps his friend in with forgettable bit-players who have crossed Spinal Tap’s path over the years to finally pronounce: “We shan’t work together again.” McKean
brings to it a child-like sense of frustration and hurt
I won’t play with you anymore.”
Nigel and David’s reunion when the former informs the band of their latest single’s success in Japan is equally adolescent
David says “OK.” Christopher Guest hints at a homoerotic connection
We know that David is a year older than Nigel
Nigel’s heartfelt wish is that of a kid asking his older
and the further away you get from adolescence
the more ridiculous it looks to be positioning yourself against The Man
Derek brings this up with David: “We had a fifteen-year ride
who wants to be a fucking forty-five year old rock-‘n’-roller
farting around in front of people less than half their age?” But this moment of realization is short-lived when they hear Nigel’s aforementioned news about Japan
The choice between being has-been rock stars and real
The film’s central thesis is the same as that of Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” and Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer”
it is more sympathetic towards its protagonists
“This is Spinal Tap” realizes that we all surround ourselves with a mesh made from the stuff of dreams
We go through life thinking that fictitious armor makes us invulnerable
And the film’s sympathetic humor hinges on the inevitable emperor’s new clothes moment: people not realizing how daft they are looking and acting
“This is Spinal Tap” admits that it is very hard to accept that one has already peaked
