Krāslava's wooden architecture is an asset that must be preserved and perpetuated
the carved wooden decorations that appear in the window and door openings
and the wooden lace are the signatures of the small Latgalian town of Krāslava and its surroundings and a pearl that can still be seen here
Head of the Development Department of Krāslava Municipality Council.
there is a different scale and a different kind of wooden heritage
it's linked to a multinational cultural environment
Every craftsman here has had his own signature."
In order to preserve and immortalize these pearls of Krāslava's wooden architecture
the Municipality of Krāslava is involved in a project called "Digital Tourism in Crafts"
the idea of preserving and telling the story of this heritage
are involved in a joint project with the Latgale Planning Region as the lead partner and the Daugavpils Unity House
"The theme of Krāslava is wooden architecture
and the result will be a digital exhibition about the wooden heritage so that it does not disappear into oblivion
and this exhibition will be placed in the stables of Krāslava Castle."
Everyone in Krāslava is invited to participate in its creation
the museum's main collections keeper: "Now we are in the process of preparation
The title of this digital exhibition is "Heritage patterns in wood
wooden architectural values of Krāslava region"
Now we are gathering all the materials in the museum's collection and asking people to send us digital photographs of wooden houses

It is important that these treasures are not lost
because the passage of time and human carelessness are often the main reasons why these pearls of craftsmanship fade into oblivion
says Alla Lomanovska: "We are proud that we have such pearls - wooden houses
You could say that in this project we will explore the face of the house

from which there have been reports of dead wild birds
The service reminded the public that last week
in the area of the Daugavpils Esplanade pond

highly contagious infectious disease of birds characterized by high mortality. Reservoirs and ponds are regarded as common distribution points of the virus for wild birds

As Latvians gathered by the thousands on Lāčplēsis Day
lighting candles and sporting their flag-ribbons to honor the nation’s freedom-fighting soldiers
one of Latgale’s farthest border zone towns by the Russian and Belarus borders
told daily newspaper Diena that he was worried about pro-Russian activities in his district
Krāslava District Council chairman Gunārs Upenieks (Greens-Farmers Union) believes the ground is being prepared for provocative ideological activities carried out by paid agents of Russia
while national security authorities are paying insufficient attention to these developments
and telling residents about opportunities that would open up should Latgale be annexed to Russia
“The information reaches us at council fairly quickly
They’re visiting schools and other social institutions
we’ve heard about payments offered to persons in leading official positions
some community leaders might be on their side
I’ve talked this over with neighboring district colleagues
but there’s no possibility to intervene
I don’t know,” the Kraslava mayor fretted
He admits that the region’s low-income residents living near the poverty level are “easier to bait with talk of salvation from the big neighbor,” while local residents who have jobs and automobiles are less susceptible to pro-Russian propaganda
the district council chair cited the example of Daugavpils
where on the one hand they allow the Eternal Flame to stay permanently lit
while children are allowed to take part in pro-Soviet Victory Day marches while officially at school
The situation at Kraslava’s Russian-track Varaviksne high school is cited to support the mayor’s claims
According to information obtained by Diena
“favorable grounds for powers friendly to Russia’s politics” are being prepared at the educational institution
Members of the Harmony party are said to have visited there on numerous occasions and spoken against the idea that Soviet Latvia was an occupied national territory and suggested that its current status as an independent republic is only temporary
The school has also received substantial donations from the Harmony party
An official of the local government who declined to reveal their name told Diena that “the money figures in the thousands
the school organizes projects and the administration takes every opportunity to tell the kids how good the party is
The first day of school was even taken up by pre-election speeches by a Harmony parliamentarian.”
visits to the school by Harmony deputy Jeļena Lazareva
have been confirmed by the Educational Quality State Service (IKVD)
IKVD leader Inita Juhņeviča pointed out that political parties are permitted by law to donate to schools as long as the funds are used for development or acquiring curricular materials and equipment
However the law doesn’t provide for any control mechanisms over how these gestures of giving reflect upon the political mindset of the students
Jānis Tukāns of the Latvian-track high school vehemently denied that he would ever let any agitators for Latgale’s secession from Latvia anywhere near the building
While acknowledging some palpable presence of pro-Russian ideological provocateurs in the region
Tukāns said none of the students at his school
had ever hinted of having had contact with such covert propaganda
Daugavpils mayor Jānis Lāčplēsis (Unity) on his part told LTV news program Panorama Wednesday that Latgale’s biggest problem with seditious activities inciting national hatred are out in the internet
as well as on television rebroadcasts of Russian media in Latvia’s border regions
By far the hardest to control are internet blogs
“There are cases where clearly this is incitement to hatred,” he said
urging the national security authorities to look into this more thoroughly
Tuesday’s Lāčplēsis Day events were targeted by certain web-based commentators
who ridiculed the holiday by comparing it to Nazism
other local government leaders in Latgale province downplayed the Kraslava mayor’s concerns over the region’s security situation
Ludza district council leader Alīna Gendele (Latgale Party) said the local scene is ‘all quiet’ except for some elderly supporters of the national Bolshevik Russian-language advocate Vladimirs Lindermanis
Zilupe district council deputy chairman Vitālijs Vaļdens (Harmony) responded to Diena’s query with his own rhetoric: “Why is there such a low opinion of our district
All of our young people speak perfect Latvian
we count some of Latvia’s greatest patriots among us
People here are preoccupied with the daily life of their households
they don’t have time for any foolishness,” he defended his constituency
named after Count Plater, is small and cozy
the atmosphere is always warm and family-like
We currently have 45 pupils and 22 employees
Thirteen of them have the school as the main workplace
even if there is a growth: last September there were 39 children," the school's deputy principal Aļona Čiževska told Rus.LSM
"At the end of the last century and the beginning of this century
But then demographic issues began all over the country
There have been talks about closure since 2009
But every time the municipality and Poland found a common stance," Čiževska said
Poland actively participates in school life
Polish language is taught by native speakers
Poland finances their first school bag with the essentials
and their parents get a grant of about EUR 150
Poland also supports events in Polish tradition
and funds the school's utility bills and stationery
The municipality said that Polish passports are held by 16% of the pupils
123 of the students have graduated year 9 in that school
About a quarter went on to Polish high schools in Daugavpils and Rēzekne
whereas about 75% go on to Latvian high schools and vocational schools
Very few choose the local minority school.
Head of the Education Administration of Krāslava
commented on the situation as follows: "The deputies adopted a final decision on school closure
We sent the documents to the Ministry of Education and Science
even if we put lower demands because the school is in the border area
The school costs 180 thousand euros a year to the municipality; Poland gave 28 thousand euros last year. Such a school is becoming a luxury we can't afford
"There are many problematic schools in the municipality of Krāslava with a small number of pupils
but keep an even smaller school in the center of town when there are other schools nearby
We offer children to move to the Varavīksne High School [minority school]
where they will be able to learn Polish and other subjects related to Polish culture."
But both the Polish school teachers and student parents are categorically opposed to moving children to the Varavīksne High School
"Similar experience was in Jēkabpils – the Polish school was transferred to the State gymnasium
And there are no more Polish schools in Jēkabpils
We do not want to repeat its fate. ll parents signed a letter to the City Council at the end of March
and we were supported by the Krāslava section of the Latvian Union of Poles
A meeting of the Latvian Union of Poles took place very recently
The Union is also opposed to a decision on closure
head of the consular division of the Polish Embassy in Latvia
confirmed to me that the embassy was looking for ways to solve the problem
which we cherish for more than 30 years now
The Polish school is one of Krāslava's cherries on top, if it's not here
then there will be no Polish culture here either," said Čiževska.
"Count Plater School is a teaching establishment that is of interest to many institutions
special funding dedicated to the maintenance of the school has been allocated
and for many years these funds have been transferred to the municipality
"The embassy of the Republic of Poland in Latvia participates in measures aimed at improving the situation of the Polish school in Krāslava and is in constant contact with all stakeholders in Latvia
in order to develop an optimal way forward for the future functioning of the school
We are convinced that we will find an appropriate solution to provide children living in Krāslava with the opportunity to learn Polish in agreement with the municipality of Krāslava and the State of Latvia."
the Poles were 22 percent of the population
when there were 4,283 residents in the city
there were 1266 Poles — 29.5 percent
the proportion of Poles gradually decreased
the Poles represented not less than ten percent of the population – 1,190 out of a total of 11,412 people

Krāslava was chosen as the first visit with the intention to prove that "Latgale is also an important region of Latvia and that Europe is actually beginning here
“Krāslava celebrates its hundredth year
I want to visit virtually all the municipalities of Latvia
a great interest in getting acquainted with both the conditions of people's lives and their concerns,” the President said
Several entrepreneurs of Krāslava municipality spoke about specific problems
such as restrictions on Latvian bank lending in Latgale and disagreements with the “Distribution Network” on the amount of electricity needed
in the hope of the president's support in bringing up the issues at the government level
The representative of the Latvian Rural Consultation and Education Center in Krāslava Ivars Geiba expressed concern about the lack of support for east border farmers. He is also the owner of a peasant farm called “Kurmīši”
which deals with the cultivation and processing of organically certified medicinal plants in the border area
This holding was also visited today by the President of the State
"It feels like the aid that comes from Riga is going to stop at a hundred kilometers
and it does not reach the outermost regions
Perhaps it is also necessary to strengthen the eastern border: to start distributing funds
to give aid directly to regions from the border area
More support is needed here in the border area," said Geiba
the President of Latvia talked about seeking opportunities to determine the special Eastern Border status for Latgale in the next cycle of the European Union budget planning
head of the Krāslava Municipality Education Board
there were 33 schools in the municipality of Krāslava with 4,360 learners
It is a complex issue at national policy level whether people are needed at all in the eastern border
transport and everything else," Miglāne said
a separate President's visit to the eastern border area is also planned soon
“I'm really worried about what is happening on the border
I think that even in the course of the talks today
border issues are likely to be on the agenda,” the President of State said
The next regional visit to the president is planned next week in Kurzeme
heading to the municipality of Kuldīga
