The State Language Centre (VVC) had earlier requested the Olaine municipality to change the name of the Medemciems train station and settlement to "Mēdemciems"
as this would be "historically more correct"
The Center said that the name is derived from the surname of the German-Baltic nobility - Mēdemi
the Olaine Municipality has decided to leave the name Medemciems as it is because it has found out that the noble Mēdemi had no connection with the location of Medemciems
Senior Specialist at the Olaine Municipality Museum of History and Art
explained that the VVC refers to the Mēdemi family
but "the Mēdemi have owned estates in Kurzeme and Zemgale
which historically have divided Vidzeme and Zemgale since the 1930s
The other important thing is that this land could also be rented at that time
There is no document in our possession or in the archives that confirms that this family rented this land
on the basis of which it could be said that it is the name of this family," Ribickis said
chief linguist at the State Language Center
told LTV that the municipality would still have to change the name "because the correct form is definitely Mēdemciems with ē"
"The State Language Center is currently considering the possibility of enforcing the decision
Most probably by applying to the court to annul the incorrect decision of the Olaine Municipal Council," said Timuška
The State Language Center plans to apply to the court in the coming months
If the court's decision is in favor of the name with a long "ē"
the name of the village and the station will have to be changed

This summer Artists Dainis Rudens and Ēriks Caune painted a graffiti on 45 m tall water tower in Olaine
«Eureka!» is the name they decided to give their work
Now the water tower is adorned with a graffiti painting with the word Olaine and images of people
which «symbolizes people’s unyielding desire for growth
discoveries and moving up on a road full of obstacles and unpredictable situations,» as representatives of artist Dainis Rudens describe it
«Eureka!» is what Ancient Greek philosopher Archimedes shouted when he made one of his discoveries
The word has since become something of a slogan for unexpected and fortunate discoveries
«Creation of this piece was a unique experience in my career as an artist
It made me leave my comfort zone and conclude
that it is possible to reach new heights in my art,» admits Rudens
More than 350 cans of spray paint were used to paint this graffiti
Rudens has produced graffiti images on walls in Liepāja
The work of art in Olaine was created as part of Tourism project of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development

About 80% of Latvia's prisoners are addicted to drugs or alcohol
many go on using banned substances while imprisoned
an addiction treatment center is being opened at the Olaine prison
marking Latvia's first initiative to fight drug dependency in penitentiaries
Admission to the treatment center - largely the brainchild of psychologist Ilze Ušacka and supported by Norwegian funds - is voluntary
Inmates seeking help will have to make their way through the fenced barbed wire corridor leading to the center on their own
the sports hall is the most beautiful area of the new treatment center
"It's necessary because addicts and inmates will be occupied with playing team sports
They won't be lifting weights and growing muscles like they're doing now
but [rather] they'll be playing basketball
The idea is that mentors will play these team sports together with the inmates and learn [to cooperate]
It's part of the therapy," said Ušacka
Teaching collaborative skills is one of the main principles of the new Addiction treatment center where drug dependency will be treated not with medicines but with therapy
These principles were adopted from similar programs in Poland and Norway
Each of the stages of the program lasts for about four months
with the first focusing on psychological support and addiction awareness
while the second one teaches social skills and prepares inmates for life in freedom
The efficiency of this therapy is hard to evaluate
however the head of the center said that in the countries which Latvia took as examples the results aren't very good as fighting addiction is difficult
"If only a few of the thousands who are using these substances and are dangerous will return [to normal life]
and we'll feel safer on the street," said Ušacka
The center can house up to 200 people.
said that about 80 to 85% of prison inmates are addicted to drugs or alcohol
but we also understand that we have set the bar high in the country
as the whole state is not tackling this problem on a scale which we have undertaken with our 200 spots
It's a new function of the Prison Administration," said Spure
A total of 70 employees will be working with inmates in two shifts
They have undergone six months of training and includes both psychologists
lawyers – most of whom have never worked in the prison system.
The treatment center will be unveiled officially on Wednesday with the first inmates slated to be admitted in late October

The accused confessed that before these two cases
"The same persons successfully committed a crime in September
they managed to take the migrants to the vicinity of Riga," said Sergejs Frolovs
prosecutor of the South Latgale Prosecutor's Office
It is not known what happened to the border crossers dropped off in Olaine
The Ukrainians were recruited in Poland and Germany and had not committed any crimes in Latvia previously
four of the six accused have pleaded guilty
In the hope of a quicker and more favourable trial
the defendants have asked for a plea bargain
the penalties demanded from the prosecution are severe
this case can also be about imprisonment only," said prosecutor Frolovs
Two to eight years in prison - this is what the supporters of the border violators have to reckon with
one of the organisers of the criminal group is still in Poland awaiting extradition
Meanwhile, the saga of the fake vans continues. Last week, a "Daugavpils Bus Park" minibus was stopped at the border
The State Border Guard claimed that a new criminal group had started operating
although he initially tried to escape from the border guards
as he had not yet had time to wait for the offenders
His job was to come and see if the vehicle in question was already there
20 people were waiting on the Belarusian side," said Māris Pukinskis
Head of the Criminal Investigation Service of the Daugavpils Directorate of the State Border Guard
concludes the Border Guard Lieutenant Colonel
Local residents also share tips on how to imitate the bus
but they are being monitored by operatives
It should be added that the number of border crossers deterred has also increased sharply in recent days with the warmer weather
The Border Guard Service reported that 179 people tried to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally in the last three days
a total of 877 people have been stopped from crossing the border illegally
while seven migrants have been admitted on humanitarian grounds

Rīga Forests workers spotted the movement of suspicious vehicles in Tīraine forest, Olaine Parish
The vehicles were captured by a CCTV camera system which has been installed to prevent garbage being dumped in forests
The employees spotted a cargo van and passenger cars and made their way to the scene on suspicion of garbage dumping
"When we arrived at the scene we realized it wasn't garbage but people in the van
Understanding that these are not Latvian-speaking people
our staff responded operationally and sent all the information further to the police
We were informed by police that the border guard should also be notified
the further actions [followed] from law enforcement,” said Ieva Bērziņa
The State Border Guard stated that during following questioning it was established that these were 18 Indian and five Eritrean citizens who had successfully managed to nearly reach the capital and who had previously crossed the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally
The area in which they were apprehended is more than 200 km from the border
Persons have been detained in accordance with Section 51 of the Immigration Law and placed in the accommodation Center “Daugavpils” for foreigners detained by the State Border Guard
In response to the rapidly growing hybrid threat at the border
the State Border Guard has mobilized additional border guards to strengthen external border guarding
The service has requested additional support from the army and the State Police
but it is obviously impossible to deploy a guard per every square meter
This case proves that not only border guards but people across the country should be observant
detained migrants who have entered Latvia and therefore the EU illegally are returned to Belarus
their official country of departure, without additional questioning
Latvia is not unique in this regard – such practices are also carried out in Poland and elsewhere. Border guards prevent more than a hundred attempts to cross the border a day
more than 10,000 border crossers have been turned back this year
8-10 criminal proceedings are launched per week for organizing illegal migration
"We know approximately the number of such groups that operate in our area
but it's not always that simple to catch them and it's not always that simple to get the material evidence of a crime committed [..] Whether we manage to capture 100% of the entire group - no
This will also make it significantly easier for us to operate both special services
border guards and police so that together we can address this threat because it is not a threat to border guards or police
but to the whole society and the country as a whole,” parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Interior Igors Rajevs noted
It should be added that the Saeima is looking at amendments to the Criminal Law on Thursday
which provide for harsher penalties for participants in the hybrid war launched by the Lukashenko regime on Latvia

More than 580 such cases were registered last year and though the frequency of such incidents has been decreasing
One such case was recorded this week on the side of the A8 highway from Rīga to Jelgava
The letters Z and V appeared spray-painted onto the bus stop "Olaines stacija" on the side of the Jelgava highway at the beginning of this week. One of the first to pay attention to it was Atis
a driver and a regular member of the acclaimed "Twitter convoy" sending vehicles to Ukraine to help that country's defenders
which is indicated on the police cars as an emergency phone number
They said that they would hand it over to the Olaine municipal police," said Atis

But "nothing had been done there by Wednesday
They answered me that it is an "A" category road
they needed to inspect it only within a week
they didn't know how to tell me that at all," said Atis
Atis complained about the slowness of the responsible authorities to the organizers of the "Twitter convoy"
who raised the alarm about it on social networks
The local government of Olaine region in turn informed both the State Police and Latvian State Roads
which are the owners of the bus stop.
when Latvian Television arrived at the bus stop
representatives of Latvian State Roads and a road maintenance company also arrived to survey the situation
They promised that in the future they would react more quickly in such cases than to ordinary graffiti or petty vandalism
"Perhaps we should also internally evaluate that when there is information about Nazi symbols
the evaluation of these works should be transferred to the quick response," said Verners Akimovs
Employees have also been told that in similar situations
The company invites residents to report similar incidents to the information phone number 80005555 or to the State Police on 110
After the arrival of company representatives on Thursday morning
the technical staff with buckets of paint and paintbrushes were soon there as well
The State Police has started an administrative violation process for this case for the use of symbols glorifying military aggression and war crimes in a public place
The person responsiible is liable to a fine of up to 350 euros

a warning is the first step of the suspension process
VVD inspections have discovered grave violations in management of hazardous waste and the company has been violating the regulations over a long period
“The goal of the warning is not to actually suspend the company’s operations
but to give a clear signal that significant changes are necessary
Inspection results show that Biolar has been ignoring the environment protection regulations in a long term
The amount of hazardous waste that can be stored in the company at the same time has been exceeded 40 times and they have been stored inappropriately,” said VVD general director Elita Baklane-Ansberga
VVD has given the company until September 5 to deal with the problems or face a potential shutdown of operations
VVD inspectors will monitor the company’s operations also during this time
Biolar has to submit a detailed plan on how the detected violations will be corrected
In late May, VVD inspectors and police officers detained a polluter who had intentionally leaked chemical substances onto roadsides in Zemgale region
The VVD received complaints from local residents about pollution with unknown substances on roadsides in a number of counties in Zemgale
and two days later detained a person whose vehicle had leaked the chemical substances in Jelgava and Bauska counties in a distance of several kilometers
the substance is cyanide ions originating from Olaine chemical plant Biolar
Biolar makes various chemical products for the building and allied trades and says it "specializes in experimental developments in chemistry
production of technologically sophisticated chemicals
intermediate materials for the paint and coatings industry
and also produces ready-made paint and varnish materials of various applications
VVD representative Maruta Buklevica told LETA earlier that so far there are no concerns about damage to human health
but residents are asked to be cautious and avoid the polluted roadsides

“Imagine the best of the Bay Area thrown onto one stage,” Festival Artistic Director Jason Olaine says
This year’s festival theme is “90s Throwback.” Olaine says it’s a tribute to the San Francisco music scene during a particularly influential era in jazz culture
“There was a period of time in the Bay Area in the early to mid-90s that was just such a melting pot of artists and sounds and different genres that were being jumbled together,” says Olaine
“Some of the most potent bands of that time were in the Bay Area and helped shape music around the world.”
will be playing special reunion sets this weekend
visitors can stroll along 12 blocks of arts and crafts and enjoy a wide array of culinary delights and beverages from the district’s establishments
the festival has drawn as many as 100,000 visitors
“It’s going to be one of the most exciting and jam-packed of the Fillmore jazz festivals in the last years,” Olaine says

pianist Joey Alexander has made fans out of some very accomplished fellow jazz musicians
The Newport Jazz Festival is under way this weekend in Newport
Among the featured performers is a young pianist — a very young pianist — named Joey Alexander
completely self-taught and one of the youngest musicians ever to play the storied festival
fellow musicians and just about everyone who's heard him — but Jason Olaine
thinks people should forget about the pianist's age
Olaine is director of programming for Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York
Josiah Alexander Sila grew up in Indonesia
my dad played a little bit of piano and guitar
but not that professionally," Alexander says
"Well You Needn't." Alexander figured out how to play it
so much joy — and also very deep when you listen to him," he says
Alexander's family moved from Bali, where was born, to Jakarta so he could play with some of Indonesia's best jazz musicians. That's where fellow pianist Herbie Hancock first heard him
and soon he was invited to play at Jazz at Lincoln Center
and Olaine says a Monk tune he played on that visit impressed the musicians gathered for a rehearsal
"Joey plays a version of 'Round Midnight,' and everybody's jaws dropped — like
looking at Joey and looking at each other," Olaine remembers
like this can't possibly be what we're hearing
One of the musicians who plays on My Favorite Things is drummer Ulysses Owens
and says that when he closed his eyes in the studio
he didn't hear a kid on the other side of the headphones
When they rehearsed and recorded "Giant Steps," Owens says
Alexander would play himself into a trance during the intros
and I watched his head kind of just bobbing to the side
He has this thing that he does when he's really going somewhere
he's going on all these harmonic adventures and melodic adventures
he's just completely in this next stratosphere
This kid is literally from another planet."
Owens says it's not just Alexander's musicality that sets him apart
Even with over 8 million views on one of his YouTube videos
"I actually think that's what's going to separate Joey
getting the kind of coverage and exposure he's getting
a spiritual core that is transcending through his music
That's what I think is going to set him apart."
Alexander says he's grateful for all of the support and encouragement he's received from so many of his fellow musicians
He's also thrilled to be a part of the New York City jazz scene
where so many of his idols first made those recordings he grew up hearing
When Olaine points out that he studies the other musicians during rehearsals
Alexander reminds him: "That's what you have to do
That's how you have inspirations to become better."

The prevalence of skin cancer in Cuba and the development of therapeutic injectibles to treat allergies caused by dust mites
were among issues discussed during several international conferences on dermatology and allergies
taking place in Havana's International Conference Center
Author: Nuria Barbosa León | internet@granma.cu
that malignant growths on the skin are among the most prevalent cancers on the island
given the tropical climate and strong solar radiation during a large part of the day
described as basal or squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma
Emphasis is therefore being placed on reducing direct exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays
head of Dermatology Services at the Manuel Fajardo University Hospital and coordinator of the Ministry of Public Heath's skin cancer program
advises avoiding the sun during the hours of greatest intensity
between 10:00am and 5:00pm; wearing clothes of pastel colors that almost entirely cover the skin; using hats and parasols to protect the face; and applying sunscreen every three or four hours during the day
She likewise called for efforts to plant trees along city streets to provide shade in public areas
and building awareness within the population that interior lighting can also damage the skin if fixtures are not covered with protective sheeting
Presented during the Dermatology Congress were positive results attained in the treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases that damage the skin
which has not considered a health problem in Cuba since 1993
Time was also allotted to discuss dermatological pathologies in children and older adults
specialty courses were offered participants
followed by the convening of the 10th Cuban National Dermatology Congress; the First Encounter of Latin American
Trained in Cuba; the 6th Symposium of the Ibero-Latin American Academy of Dermatology's Youth Chapter; the 4th International Seminar presented by the Placental Histotherapy Center; and the 6th National Sobeida Lovio Memorial Skin Cancer Day
presenting products created in Cuban and international laboratories
with the country's leaders in the sector on hand
Among these were the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
One of the products attracting the most attention was Heberferon for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma
which has effectively reduced advanced growths in 450 Cuban patients
including those which are difficult to surgically access
Likewise discussed in the 14th Central American and Caribbean Allergy Congress was use of the injectible medication Valergen to address ailments
The drug is registered in Cuba and results of initial investigations have been published
in charge of several of the clinical trials conducted with Valergen
"Our research made clear that the product is safe and effective
Only 0.5% of patients treated experienced adverse reactions
while internationally the norm is to accept up to 2% of the total focus group."
The medication is available by prescription from family doctors in the country's network of neighborhood clinics
and can be administered to children and adults alike
"We are currently investigating another variant of the drug with the goal of reducing the number of yearly doses required
we're administering about 20 and we would like to reduce that to three."
The gathering of allergy experts was convened under the banner of "Integrating sciences for a future without allergies," and simultaneously taking place was the 5th Ibero-American Encounter and the 9th National Congress of the specialty
A new component of the series of meetings usually held at the same time was a training course sponsored by the World Allergy Organization
The Congress included discussions of a variety of issues such as the epidemiology of allergic ailments; airborne allergens and air quality; allergic inflammation; basic and clinical immunology; rhinitis
and allergic eye reactions; in addition to education and quality of life issues associated with allergies
Both international events provided an opportunity for academic exchanges to discuss new scientific and pharmaceutical developments
and novel experiences acquired in dermatology and the treatment of allergies
with topics dedicated to the analysis of the policy approved for this sector
its relationship with the environment and the circular economy

so I’m responsible for all the programming we generate
Our concert season runs from September through June in our two main halls — the 450-seat Allen Room and the 1,100-seat Rose Theatre
Rose Hall at Columbus Circle in midtown Manhattan
We also have an amazing jazz club — Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola — that is open seven nights a week
We have a similar club in the Middle East — in Doha
Qatar — that opened in October of 2012 and we will be opening a club in Shanghai in late 2016 or early 2017
Our Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis tours approximately 12 weeks a year — they’re in Europe right now
We have tours slated from now through 2016
We’re putting a lot of musicians to work and spreading jazz to the masses
What does it tell you about the state of jazz
There are more people “consuming” jazz — buying tickets
viewing on demand — than at any other time in history
Has the economy fully recovered here and abroad
So we feel that given how strong the jazz economy is now
we sold more tickets this year than any year before and had more than 100,000 people watching our live streams
And sales for next season are tracking 15 percent ahead of this year
But the real clincher for feeling so optimistic is seeing real kids playing real jazz
I recently witnessed the “Essentially Ellington” high school big band competition
where 15 of the top bands from around the country perform three charts of the Duke’s music
(Only Rio Americana from Sacramento made it from California
more in time and in tune — and had more amazing soloists — than any high school band I remember competing against when I was a kid
And that band didn’t even make the top three
workshops and assembly performances at the American School of Doha and the Qatar Music Academy for local kids to interact with the professional musicians we’re sending out there to perform at the club
We invited the high school jazz band to perform onstage in the club
and that may have been a highlight of their year — to play a real jazz club
The feedback we’ve had from school administrators
students and parents has been overwhelming
thanking us for bringing jazz to the Middle East in general and to their schools in particular
So I’m bullish on jazz — where it is and where it’s headed
is Wynton Marsalis really perfect in every way
I can’t think of a more inspiring person to work for
He’s not just a world-class musician — perhaps the greatest trumpeter our planet has ever seen (although Wynton would put Louis Armstrong at the pinnacle
He’s also hell-bent on improving society and uplifting our culture through the way we communicate with one another
supporting it — can and will naturally cause you to not only listen
all in the service of finding common ground
What has prompted you to keep your Fillmore ties
even after moving to New York and the top of the jazz world
When Jazz at Lincoln Center approached me in 2011
could I stay here in the Bay Area for another year (we lived in Oakland at the time) and consult from afar since my triplets (Miles
Another was whether I could produce the occasional album if it wasn’t a conflict of interest in any way
And the third was whether I could continue as artistic director of the Fillmore Jazz Festival
The Bay Area is my home — I am a third generation Palo Altan
used to see Brubeck in SF when he was a high schooler
He was an amateur pianist himself and he turned me on to jazz as a baby
My first jobs in the jazz world were at Yoshi’s in Oakland and the Gavin Report back in the early 90s
I also interned at KJAZ and Jazz in the City
my band “Jazz on the Line” and later “2AM” played Blondie’s on Valencia for years and years
and we played any other club or bar that would have us
including Yoshi’s in Oakland and Rasselas when it was on Divis
But I also feel I’m staying connected to the jazz and music scene here
Jazz at Lincoln Center has presented San Francisco’s own Paula West twice — once with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and again with Michael Feinstein
Also Kenny Washington — who is performing on Fillmore with the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra on Saturday — has played at Lincoln Center twice this year as well
Kim Nalley sold out all her shows at Lincoln Center — nearly 1,800 tickets
And I’m sure I’ll discover more amazing talent here that East Coast audiences should hear
Are you keeping an eye on the San Francisco scene
I think the opening night concert I saw at the new SF Jazz Center was the most acoustically perfect concert I’ve ever heard
just to hear the varied nuance from front to back — and it’s amazing
I’m sure we will find a way to make that happen
Kaz Kajimura gave me my first job in jazz and then he hired me again 16 years later
So I am forever grateful and will always support and cheer for Yoshi’s
We announced our 2014-15 season a couple of months ago and ticket sales are off to a blistering start
please make a point of coming by to say hello
You can always see what we’re up to at jalc.org
and you can watch nearly all of our concerts free in HD and multi-track mixing at jalc.org/live
That’s right: We put up all of our concerts online with a multi-camera shoot and then we give the content to the artist so they can use it — to sell
We don’t want to hoard music; we want to share it
I think that’s one of the things I like the most about being involved with the Fillmore Jazz Festival: sharing music

Some musicians conquer New York City on the strength of a splashy
Some work their way through sweaty clubs toward a breakthrough moment
you hold a press conference on an airport tarmac
But newcomer Joey Alexander announced his arrival in the lobby of the administrative offices of Jazz at Lincoln Center
He and his parents had headed straight there from the airport
wearing a crimson hoodie with a red scarf still tied around his neck
he sat at the Steinway sitting in the lobby
and broke into “Dat Dere” by Bobby Timmons
started opening up and people started coming out of their offices and coming down to the lobby,” recalls Jason Olaine
the director of programming and touring at JALC
“People heard this great piano playing and didn’t know what it was
Olaine was on hand to greet the Alexanders
Tipped off by JALC boss Wynton Marsalis to Joey’s talents
Olaine had tracked him on Facebook and invited him to play the organization’s annual gala
Two days after the impromptu lobby performance
Joey closed that event with a solo rendition of the Thelonious Monk standard
Alexander is having an even more widely observed breakout moment
This month saw the release of his solo debut
a grab-bag of favorite jazz tunes (plus the original “Ma Blues”) appropriately called “My Favorite Things.” The record
includes some solo piano and two small groups: a combo with veterans Larry Grenadier (bass) and Ulysses Owens Jr
and another with up-and-comers Russell Hall on bass
“I love jazz because jazz is all about freedom
freedom to express yourself,” Alexander says in a telephone interview
He is speaking the day after appearing on NBC’s “The Today Show” and “Nightly News.” Earlier in the week
he was profiled on the front page of The New York Times
Sometimes it’s hard,” he says of the latest demands on his time
Accustomed to hearing jazz played in the home
and he was playing these songs from the old times and from these great jazz musicians
I would listen to this song by Thelonious Monk called ‘Well
You Needn’t.’ And then I started to try the piano
He quickly wowed his parents not only with his ability to learn jazz compositions and play them cleanly
and though he spent some time studying classical music he mainly apprenticed by listening to and playing with other jazz musicians
By age 10 he’d won an international improvisation contest in Ukraine
Greats like Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis became key advocates
A visit to New York City last fall may have proved the tipping point
with a well-received appearance in a concert honoring Hancock at the Apollo Theater
followed swiftly by the sessions for “My Favorite Things.”
He isn’t launching a full-scale tour to support the album yet
Three of the nine dates scheduled for spring and summer are in New England — a sold-out trio gig at Scullers on Wednesday will be followed in August by appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival (July 31
1) and Rockport’s Shalin Liu Performance Center (Aug
Olaine says it’s important to note that Alexander is more than a technical virtuoso
“He’s not a one-trick pony or someone who’s just memorized licks
He’s coming in with new arrangements and dealing with some very complex harmonies and melodies
that’s when you really start to fathom how deep his gift is,” he says
Alexander is enrolled in an online education program
but has talked of plans to go to school in New York
A more extensive tour is planned for this fall
even if understandably soft-spoken on the phone with an interlocutor from the press
Alexander is quick to thank the supporters and patrons who have lined up behind him already
And if audiences are impressed by the juxtaposition of his little frame and his big talent
he beams the respect right back out to his new fans
