The reason for the suspension is that the nearby residents smelt a rat – or
fish. The company's activities have caused nuisance odors which have had a long-term impact on the daily life of the surrounding population
LSM reported as far back as 2017 on the factory's smelly business
Reneta Ltd has a permit issued by the State Environment Agency for a category B polluting activity
measures must be taken to prevent or reduce the emission of pollution
and to ensure compliance with environmental quality standards
the VVD issued a warning to suspend operations
but Reneta failed to remedy the violations and non-compliances by the deadline of February 4 this year
The company is currently prohibited from carrying out any activities related to the sources of odor emissions
Reneta Ltd has been issued with 5 decisions on actions to be taken
which specify the actions that should be taken to ensure that the plant operates in compliance with environmental requirements
One warning to enforce permit conditions and one warning to suspend the operation of the installation has also been issued
"It is a great pleasure for me to be in Saldus today and to celebrate the unity of the Baltic nations together with our Lithuanian friends
addressing the participants of the Baltic Unity Day ceremony in Saldus on Saturday
and all the townspeople for the warm welcome and the splendid celebration
as well as our Lithuanian brothers and sisters
but also for their unwavering support and for standing shoulder to shoulder with us
"The Baltic Unity Day is truly to be celebrated
As a testament to the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Baltic peoples
and also as a testament to the values and goals that this day honours and stands for," stressed Mieriņa
the Samogitians and Semigallians jointly fought against the combined forces of the Crusaders
They fought against the presumed rights of foreign nations willing to determine our destiny
It was the first time our peoples demonstrated the power of cooperation and unity against an external enemy
We have fought together against foreign aggression and for our freedom long after the Battle of Saule as well
with and without weapons in our hands," said the Speaker of the Saeima
We can be proud of our joint accomplishments to strengthen the independence and security of our countries and to promote economic growth
let this be an incentive for each of us not only to rejoice in our achievements
but also to reinforce our cooperation day after day
to look for new gateways to bolster our common strength through closer cooperation in all areas and at all levels," stated Mieriņa
the Speaker of the Saeima also met with Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen
to discuss issues of bilateral cooperation and strengthening regional security
Speaker Čmilytė-Nielsen is the first foreign official met by Daiga Mieriņa since taking office as Speaker of the Saeima
Speaker Mieriņa also met with the leadership of Saldus Town Council and visited the Janis Rozentāls Saldus History and Art Museum
The Baltic Unity Day is celebrated every year in a town in Latvia or Lithuania
It commemorates the Battle of Saule fought on 22 September 1236
when the joint Samogitian and Semigallian forces defeated the Livonian Brothers of the Sword
the Latvian Saeima and the Lithuanian Seimas designated the day of the Battle of Saule—22 September—as an official day of remembrance

The National Armed Forces (NBS) tweeted tragic news Sunday of a man who was killed upon attempting to saw in half an antique unexploded charge at a building in the central western Kurzeme provincial town of Saldus
State Police and an NBS unit called in for assistance have discovered various types of munitions at the scene of the deadly explosion
anti-tank rockets and other incendiary and explosive devices
An investigation continues into the accident
State Police spokesperson Signe Šteinberga told Latvian Radio that the man
had tried to saw the charge in half when it exploded on him in the building’s courtyard
Latvia's first Patria is a demonstration to society that defense is a national priority
Chairman of the Board of Defense Partnership Latvia
said that "this event is proof that Latvian industry can."
"This armored vehicle's hull and hull parts are manufactured in Ķekava and Rīga
floating devices - they are made in Saldus
Patria has received orders for around 700 machines from participants in the project and we have delivered more than 200 machines
Patria parts produced in Latvia are also assembled in the armored personnel carriers of our partner countries," Romanovs said
He pointed out that production is currently progressing very well and that the target of producing 30 Patria armored vehicles per year is currently not causing any difficulties
The Valmiera plant can produce 160 Patria 6x6 armored personnel carriers per year
The plant has a capacity of 80 armored personnel carriers per year per shift
but currently only fulfils the Latvian NBS order of 30 armored personnel carriers per year.
Acting Commander of the Home Guard and Commander of the 3rd Latgale Brigade
the two main beneficial factors of the Patria armored vehicle are mobility and self-defense
"This is an infantry fighting vehicle that helps our infantry units to move
it is equipped with the necessary equipment and armaments - the biggest support for our self-defense
because we are light infantry units and we move with unarmored vehicles
ranging from 4x4 light vehicles to heavy vehicles
The Patria is the first armored vehicle that provides our capability
this vehicle provides the movement of personnel
all the necessary equipment and also supports the movement of weapons to the specific tasks," Vizulis said
The vehicles are tested at the Ādaži military training ground.

There's a lot to run for, from, and towards, as one catchy song seems to confirm
And running is what you're encouraged to do in this weekend's event guide brought to you by LSM's culture editors
Birthday boy Janis Rozentāls has a lot going on for him
and there's even a running celebration in his hometown of Saldus
which LSM's folk sports expert Matīss Vecvagaris says features several strong runners
There are even modest cash prizes for the winners
John's Saldus Lutheran Church on March 18 will resound with the "Rozentāls' colors in music" concert at 6 p.m
It'll feature renowned Latvian National Opera soloist Laura Grecka
as well as pupils and teachers of the Saldus Music School
a painting that ought to cool you down after the long run
Despite the town's steelworks slated to be 'conserved'
and if you run fast enough you can still make it to the city for its 391th birthday on March 18
guests are invited to the Great Amber hall to celebrate with the band Tumsa
which will coincidentally be celebrating its 25th year below the sun.
The festivities will continue into the evening and feature fireworks and probably revelry well into the night
Each year on March 22 the World Water Day 2016 is celebrated over the world
However there'll be an event before then too
On March 19 the Ķemeri National Park will feature information on whence water is coming and whither it's headed. It will feature stories, music, practical experiments and more water-related things. Contacts: Ieva Lazda, 26577265, [email protected]
While if you want to run, you can at 6 a.m. Sunday - when spring is supposed to start - join the company that will be seeking the source of the Strenčupīte at Jercēni in Valka. Contacts: Rūta Zepa, tālr. 26361362, e-pasts: [email protected].
The Fashion Manifestation at the H2O Architecture and Media Center at the RISEBA university will on March 18 at 7 p.m
feature shows by both leading and up-and-coming fashion designers.
The manifestation will manifest away on March 19 with a children's fashion show at 3 p.m.
the equally fashionable band Oranzas Brivdienas will be celebrating its sweet sixteen at Fontaine Palace in Liepāja on the evening of March 19
with a rare guest appearance by Lietotas Mēbeles No Holandes.

The Saldus SPAR assortment contains products from local producers and other popular products and brands in the Baltic
as well as products from the SPAR private brand
Representatives of Spar Latvija said that the next SPAR network shop will be opened in Liepāja in August
The goal of Spar Latvija is to open at least 200 SPAR network stores in Latvia within five years.
The company belongs to Aleksandrs Svarevskis (50 percent)
Valerijs Ivasenki (8 percent) and Andris Vilcmeiers (5 percent)
SPAR launched operations in 1932 in the Netherlands
and now has more than 13,500 stores in 48 countries of the world
and the aggregate turnover reached EUR 39.8 billion
outlined how protein production is carried out:
here are the husks and the peeled peas and beans
We grind them and separate them into two fractions with the help of air
we can simply separate the starch from the protein."
Europe currently imports more protein than it exports
group purchasing manager at Golden Field Factory LV:
"The volume of protein in the world is increasing
There is all this vegan stuff that is fashionable
so protein is in short supply at the moment."
Approximately 3 tonnes of protein can be produced per hour
it is necessary to increase the electricity capacity
We have a contract with Bunge for the protein
for the starch we are looking for a market to sell and market it
Starch is difficult at the moment. We know that in China they have started to use it
but it is not so widespread that there is demand."

The protein produced in Liepāja goes to various countries around the world
and is bought by the aforementioned Bunge company
samples have been sent to Japan and the USA
but Bunge is now buying everything and selling it to the end customer
Beans and peas for processing are purchased from Latvian and Lithuanian growers
The protein produced in Liepāja can currently be used for animal feed
"We are working to be certified to produce protein for human consumption by mid-2025
This means that this protein can be used in a variety of products - burgers
and other products available on the market."
the company operates on a no-residue production principle - whatever is left over is used to produce fodder in the Saldus region
"There will be a pellet production in Saldus
It's pressed and made into pellets - animal feed."
The location of the plant in the industrial park of Karosta and in Liepāja is not accidental
The Liepāja location is interesting for investors from the United Arab Emirates and work will continue
Deputy Ambassador and Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia to the United Arab Emirates
You can also locate production facilities right in the port area
the environment is in place so that you can start production quite quickly and in a short time
we [Latvia] are a member of the European Union
With the establishment of Golden Field Factory LV
attracting an investment of €16 million
agricultural processing has returned to Liepāja and significant investment from the United Arab Emirates and the United States has come in
LVC noted that serious accidents in recent days occurred at kilometers 80
Road safety audits are carried out by the Road Safety Directorate and assess how to improve road safety on a given stretch of road
Information from the State Police on the causes of the three serious accidents will also be important
the most common cause of such accidents is reckless overtaking resulting in a head-on collision
two car accidents with casualties occurred on the Riga-Liepāja motorway in Saldus municipality
another tragic accident occurred on the same road in Blīdene parish
where 2 more people died in a head-on collision between a car and a lorry

After inspecting the site of Sunday’s tragic explosion in the town of Saldus
caused when a 47-year old man fatally tried to take apart an antique munitions charge under his carport in a residential neighborhood
explosives experts told the local Skrunda Television news crew the accident could have been much worse
Besides the shrapnel and bloodstains on the ground
the unpleasant scene where the man attempted to table-saw the charge in half revealed many more freely accessible explosive units lying around the premises
Police are trying to determine how and why the man managed to carry them to his home
police and the explosives experts are unanimous in stressing that any unexploded charge is extremely dangerous and should not even be touched
The discovery of such objects must be reported to the authorities
The deceased bomb-collector had not previously come to the attention of local law enforcement
but was known to work in the forestry sector
where it is possible he was able to discover the war-era explosives left over in the since overgrown wooded wilderness of central western Kurzeme
which is full of such unexploded devices in places
Kurzeme regional Saldus precinct police chief Indulis Blīgzna told Skrunda TV that a criminal investigation is ongoing
“Specialists in the neutralization of unexploded munitions put it bluntly – any charge was made to kill and they have no expiration date," he said
Commander Aigars Pūce of the National Armed Forces Unexploded Munitions Neutralization Platoon added that the explosion could have done more damage than it did
fortunately (for all but the tinkerer himself) not detonating in an explosion
but quickly burning and blowing up in a nevertheless deadly way
but all of their mechanisms are intact and meant to keep working,” Pūce explained
The house where the explosion happened was like a time bomb waiting to go off
If the detonation had triggered any of the other devices collected by the man
the consequences could have been far more devastating
Today marks the 150th birthday of the great Latvian painter Janis Rozentāls (1866-1916)
one of the founding figures of Latvian national art
LSM offers an abridged version of Latvian Radio's column dedicated to ten important paintings of the artist
The works reflect the variety of styles prevalent in the late 19th and the early 20th century.
director of the Latvian National Art Museum
featuring the back of a naked woman and the author himself lighting the stove
is first and foremost recognizable for its beauty and second of all that Rozentāls could achieve a sense of fragility using the colors of the flesh
Art expert Edvarda Šmite said that Rozentāls found his model for the painting in a carnival
while he got the idea about the monkey from his son Miķelis
and a gypsy brought a monkey to Rozentāls' studio
posing for the artist for a ruble a day.
wrote in her notes that the painter was extremely considerate - kiss her arm by the elbow is all he did
Rozentāla Saldus vēstures un mākslas muzeja kolekcija
an employee at the Janis Rozentāls' museum at the tiny city of Saldus where the painter was born says that when she asks visitors whether they can recognize Saldus from the painting
everyone without fail says that they recognize the city from the church
an art historian at the Latvian Academy of Art
said that the painting is one of Rozentāls' most recognizable and had been featured in school textbooks previously
thus entering the memory of a whole generation
that modern children who are partially growing up in different conditions think that this painting is their own," said Ābele
Rozentāls' grandson Alvils Rozentāls says that the artist painted this work with his wife
the Finnish singer Elli Forssell, and firstborn Laila in mind
There are three known works of Rozentāls with the title Temptation
This is the most recent version of the work featuring Eve and the serpent.
Art historian Inta Pujāte says that the composition of the painting shows how Eve is close to falling to sin as the serpent's tail is almost around the figure of the woman
These two paintings are located at the Mūkusala Art Salon
Curator Līga Lindenbauma says both of the works were inspired by the painter's 1912 travels to Italy
The second painting reminds Lindenbauma that sunbathing came into fashion in the early 20th century
and prior to that pale was the preferred skin tone
This painting was commissioned for the Dundaga Lutheran Church
Art historian Ojārs Spārītis describes the painting
surprisingly placing the scene within the Latvian countryside
the scenery of Kurzeme with fields still covered in snow," he said
is one of the versions of a motif that preoccupied the painter
The idyllic world of women and children notably excludes the painter
"As a man and as the creator of this scene and the romantic dream about the land of happiness
by the easel," art historian Aija Brasliņa told Latvian Radio
While the second Arcadia (1916) is the last
Art student Liene Rumpe told Latvian Radio that "The colors are very Latvian
you can somehow see the Latvian mentality and the grey variations in tones."
See some of the paintings described here, plus some more in high detail at the Google Cultural Institute.
recent years have seen a new tradition taking root which brings friends and families together around a "white tablecloth" to share memories of the past and hopes for the future
Others make it a point to don folk dress for the day
As previously reported by LSM, the Latvian capital, Rīga, has a wide variety of celebratory events planned and public transport in Rīga is free all day.
Similar things will be taking place in other towns and cities, while the honor of hosting the annual military parade goes to the southern city of Saldus

pārsvarā no Otrā pasaules kara

LIFE ReHABITA aims to reduce the cost and hassle of renovating the homes of those suffering from energy poverty
5 one-stop-shops have been set up to provide residents with fact sheets
contracts and all the other support they need to insulate and upgrade their homes.
Latvia and Hungary are already benefitting — by 2027
at least 500 homes will be more energy efficient
creating warmer winter homes for 1 250 people
Not only will this improve their health and wellbeing
but also their bank accounts – with an anticipated 37% reduction in energy consumption per household
Education around better behaviours and ways to save or reduce energy also plays an important role.
That’s where CoolToRise comes in
aiming to cool the homes of more than 7 240 residents in Bulgaria
Spain and Greece by focusing on vulnerable households at risk from high and unhealthy temperatures during summer months
Installing air conditioning is not the answer because it increases bills
uses more energy and pumps waste heat into an already-hot atmosphere.
though — local communities have planted trees and installed benches to create cool shady spots and combat the urban heat island effect.
The theme for this year’s EPAH conference — ‘Turning the Tide: Paving the Way for Energy Poverty Alleviation’ — was apt for the host city
where high levels of energy poverty persist
City authorities are proactively tackling this challenge through sustainability initiatives
green infrastructure and innovative housing solutions.

RIGA - The remains of 95 more Soviet soldiers have been unearthed in Pampali
a county in the western Latvian region of Saldus
the non-governmental organization called The Search Unit "Legend" informed LETA
each containing the remains of 20 to 30 soldiers
The NGO’s representatives indicated that of the approximately 400 Soviet soldiers found so far buried at the Pampali site
Representatives of the NGO also noted that the items found in the mass graves included war medals and orders
as well as a soldier’s identification capsule
The paper in the capsule had become wet and is now being dried
which is expected to take more than a month
it will become possible to read the content of the capsule
The NGO also informed that World War II battles raged at the excavation site from January 1945 until the end of the war in May of the same year
while the soldiers were buried there during the months following the war
The remains of the Soviet soldiers will be reburied in about a year
the NGO will be actively cooperating with the Russian archives
looking for the information about the soldiers
Most probably the soldiers will be reburied in the Red Army Fraternal Cemetery in Pamapali which is where the remains of the Soviet soldiers found in 2002 were reburied
Our work is in compliance with the Latvian-Russian agreement concerning the war graves in both countries
the Search Unit "Legend" discovered the remains of 145 Soviet soldiers in Pampali
The organization's representatives dug out the remains of 145 Soviet soldiers
which will help to identify at least five of the bodies
The organization said it was not the first such discovery in the given location
Fifteen years ago remains of 140 soldiers were found in the same area but on the other side of the road
The purpose of the Search Unit "Legend" is to look for the World War II graves
to recover and to identify the bodies for subsequent reburial and to find
to restore and to put on display old military equipment

BÅTSFJORD / ODESSA / OSLO (Dagbladet): 18-hour workday and six hours of rest
For just a little over 4000 Norwegian kroner and a carton of cigarettes a month
Such are the brutal conditions in employment contracts of Indonesian seamen on a number of snow crab boats in Båtsfjord
- It was painful to see what it was like for the Indonesians
Some of the people I spoke to had worked aboard the boat for over two years
says a Ukrainian sailor Dagbladet met in Odessa
He worked on one of the Båtsfjord-based boats owned by the Latvian company Baltjura-serviss
He does not dare to have his name and photo published
but he has shown us his own employment contract
a seaman’s visa and cell phone photos of the crab vessel
who disappeared at sea from the Baltjura-serviss boat «Kalmar» on September 4
- My husband told me that the Indonesian seamen were treated as slaves
They had to wear old clothes until they almost fell off
They did not get enough food and they starved
Even though they had to work more than the rest of the crew
And often they did not even get the agreed wages
she cannot get in touch with her deceased husband’s employer
which was not the ship owner but a crewing company in Seychelles with unknown owners
The Batljura-serviss snow crabbing fleet in Båtsfjord also included the vessels «Valka»
Dagbladet uncovered the unworthy conditions on board crabbing boats owned by the Latvian company Baltjura-serviss and told the story of seaman Dmitry Kravchenko who disappeared at sea
we continue the series about the hunt for the snow crab
While Irina’s Ukrainian husband was properly paid
the situation was different for the Indonesians who had been recruited to work for this and other fishing companies in Båtsfjord
the Indonesian seamen also had to work all week without a day off
This means that their hourly wage was 8-9 kroner
According to information Dagbladet has received
there are reportedly about 50 Indonesians who were brought to Båtsfjord to work on various boats under such contracts
Norway’s most well-known human trafficking lawyer
has a very strong reaction to the content of the contract
- Dagbladet’s information indicates that there may be a violation of human trafficking law

While there are trying times for late-in-life lovebirds Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi
Sally Wainwright’s family drama remains as warm and familiar as a reunion with old friends
bittersweet Sunday comfortThis article is more than 5 years oldWhile there are trying times for late-in-life lovebirds Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi
and just over three since we caught up with Alan
The reunited octogenarians are still married
but now they are arguing over a new kitchen and how smart a spare room needs to be for a last-minute guest
The daughters are navigating their own successes
and wondering how it might be possible for a YouTuber to review a sheep
This opening episode is deceptively slight
and Gillian is worried about money and how she can keep the farm going
and John is bitterly slogging his way through Judith’s alcoholism and success as a children’s author
But Last Tango has always been the sort of series to wrongfoot you
just when you settle in; while it is cosy and familiar in many respects
it is always just a step away from a surprisingly serrated edge
Celia can’t hide her mortification at the thought of him working in a supermarket
and then at the thought of him getting a bus to work
(She will be requiring the Lexus.) Anne Reid’s ability to play an affronted snob is unparalleled
and it leads to some of the funniest lines in the episode
She worries he will be waiting at the bus stop
Derek Jacobi gives Alan a bleeding heart that peppers the tone with pathos: he points out that the tills staffed by people
might be the only place a lonely person will speak to someone else all day
and I am more worried about their relationship than I am for the marriages of some people I know in real life
Caroline and Gillian are aware that Celia runs rings around Alan
but their parents lack of shared values is starting to loom large
Celia feels entitled to enjoy her retirement in comfort
underfunded” social services and befriends a young
When Gillian asks to borrow money from her father
it lights a fuse under this fundamental disagreement and it’s hard to imagine it will fade away without a bang
View image in fullscreenGillian (Nicola Walker) and Caroline (Sarah Lancashire)
Photograph: Matt Squire/BBC/Lookout PointAll of the characters seem to be asking themselves whether or not they are happy
now the single parent of her dead wife’s daughter
that she is happier than she has ever been
She has made such a success of her school that Michelle Obama popped in last year
While I thought they might be hinting that Caroline would get back together with her ex-husband John
her affections are instead pointed at a Shakespeare-loving teacher having her own marital issues
and it is an indication of the tone that this manages to be very funny indeed
and a nasty case of woodworm leaves her desperate for money to save the farm
it is with such palpable sharpness that I felt like hissing at the screen
But the art of Last Tango is that it presents both sides without judgment
Money leads to resentments within even the most stable of families
You can’t blame Celia for being selfish at this point in her life
nor can you blame Alan for wanting to help his daughter in a time of crisis
even if you want to have a stern word with both of them
its characters feel instantly familiar again
To pick it up after three years is like checking in with old friends
and it raises the kinds of questions about family and domesticity – how much is compromise
– and also morality that demand more than just a passing consideration
It would be crass to suggest that Last Tango stands as a metaphor for the state of the nation
but at a time when we appear to be weathering a seemingly insurmountable divide in values
it is particularly pointed to see it playing out on screen among such a beloved couple
I only hope Wainwright doesn’t split them up
