Kicking off his Baltic tour with a sold-out show at the Endla Jazz Club in Pärnu
the internationally acclaimed Estonian guitarist Andres Roots will be criss-crossing Latvia next week
appearing at Atmoda in Riga on January 15th
at the BJMK rock school in Jelgava on January 17th
and at Valhalla Lounge in Sigulda on January 18th.
The tour concludes with a Tallinn concert at Kidrakuur Kultuuriklubi on January 25th that also features the Finnish quartet Blues Bizarre
Roots will be performing in Finland and then take his acoustic slide guitar blues on the road in the UK in March
promoting his new release "Royal Spa Blues"
The album was recorded live at Temperance in Royal Leamington Spa during last year's UK tour that also saw the Estonian perform at the Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival and the Upton Blues Festival.
"You could be forgiven for thinking your ears or eyes deceive you
given it sounds like either there are two musicians/guitars involved
or he has six fingers on each hand," writes the FabricationsHQ critic Ross Muir about Roots' performance at the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine
as with guitar luminaries such as Martin Taylor
Andres Roots is an exceptional multi-parts guitarist; thumbing a bass line and picking out a rhythm while delivering a melody
highly individualistic phrasing or some nifty slide work
the latter sometimes incorporating two slides..."
Andres Roots' music has received airplay on five continents and his Golden Disc-earning 2016 LP "Roots Music" remains the only blues album ever to top the sales charts in Estonia
he served as an official Ambassador for last year’s European Capital of Culture – Tartu
where he has been living for the past 30 years

It's a popular and long-established ritual of the Fall for Rīgans
One almost suspects that as far as some of the city-dwellers are concerned
a day trip to Sigulda in October means they have 'done' the countryside
for another year and can return to their boulevards with the satisfied feeling of Amundsen on his return from the South Pole
Now, without doubt, Sigulda is very nice
You only need to walk a few hundred meters from the train station and you get a spectacular view across the Gauja River valley
The more adventurous can then disappear down well-established hiking trails before returning for a hot chocolate at one of the cafes by the station and a train home
The less adventurous can go straight for the hot chocolate
It's undeniably a nice day trip – which is why at this time of year you will just be one among many others doing exactly the same
you might consider somewhere other than Sigulda
There are plenty of places that offer Autumnal landscapes that are at least its equal
according to the sort of thing you hear during a PowerPoint presentation
Due to the fact that pretty much everywhere outside of Rīga looks stunning in the Fall, a condition has been imposed in compiling this list: the destinations must in theory be reachable by train from Rīga
That rule will be bent close to breaking point
here are a few suggestions for spectacular autumn trips away from the capital city
On the same line as Sigulda but adding another 40 minutes or so of journey time will bring you to the pretty city of Cēsis
Head south from the station and within half an hour you will be on the banks of the River Gauja
The Cirulīši nature trail is a good one
but less well-known is a section of the Santiago di Compostella route that winds along the river and over some small hills nearby
pretty circular trail just across the river at Sarkanās cliffs comes complete with the freshest spring water you will ever drink
More: https://visit.cesis.lv/
Ogre is just as easy to reach from Rīga as Sigulda and indeed it, too, used to be a resort town, evidence of which remains in its pretty wooden villas. The station is right in the middle of town, and you have several options as you disembark – should you head for the River Ogre, the River Daugava or the 'Zilie Kalni' (Blue Hills) nature park
which has trails specially designed for bikes
Ogre is a particularly good choice for cyclists who will be able to take in a lot in a single day and the trains are frequent
It also offers plenty of excellent places to eat when you have worked up an appetite
More: https://www.visitogre.lv/en/
Saldus is reachable by train on the line towards Liepāja
It's a town that has really improved its attractiveness in recent years and now makes a very pleasant and different destination for people who want to explore Latvia in a bit more depth
There is a great viewpoint over the town right beside the road on Biļļu hill
while for walkers the pretty Ciecere nature trail winds along the Ciecere river and can be continued all the way to the picturesque Saldus Lake
The best autumn colors can probably be found in Kalnsēta park and the best view from the top of Lake Ciecere observation tower
One thing to bear in mind though – the Saldus railway station is actually located a couple of kilometers away from the town itself.
More: https://turisms.saldus.lv/en/
but it does have one thing that is a very big draw at this time of year – a large and beautiful dendrological park
this is located quite a distance from the train station – in the case of Skrīveri Dendrological Park
so perhaps this is more of an option for cyclists and motorists unless you really want to wear down the soles of your hiking boots (or use a taxi)
either way – the dendrological park which is owned by Latvian State Forests extends over 16 hectares right on the banks of the River Daugava and includes more than 300 different species of trees.
Parts are decidedly park-like and open (it was originally the formal park of Skrīveri Manor)
while others have been allowed to get a little wilder
A perfect place for an autumn picnic.

There's plenty to see when you reach Alūksne
Walk across the causeway to Castle Island and Temple Hill with its viewing platform for the most spectacular panoramas

Olympics.com profiles the German duo and three other racers that you should watch in the skeleton competitions in Latvia.
Neise will have fond memories of the track at Sigulda after capturing European silver there in February and picking up a third-place finish in the World Cup race there last season.
The 24-year-old is renowned as a consistent performer, and so its proving true once again as Neise sits top of the leaderboard with three podium finishes from four races thus far.
With that said, the 2024 mixed team world champion is yet to win an event in the 2024/25 World Cup campaign, and given her good performances at this venue she could be primed to break that duck on Friday.
Like Neise, Grotheer has been a paragon of consistency this season; only in his case, the 32-year-old has won every race of the 2024/25 campaign to date.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Christopher Grotheer OLY (@christophergrotheer)
Grotheer's form has seen him build a healthy 80-point lead over Matt Weston in second
his winning streak could come to an end in Sigulda
The three-time men's world champion has never won a race there
and has only finished on the podium in Latvia once (a third place finish in 2023)
Friday presents a perfect chance for the German to bag another victory as he seeks his second overall World Cup crown
The women's field is a tightly-run affair at the moment
with four different athletes having secured a win thus far (Great Britain's Amelia Coltman and Freya Tarbit
Dan Zhao of the People's Republic of China and Belgium’s Kim Meylemans)
Picture by 2022 Getty ImagesJanine Flock of Team Austria
After placing 2nd and 3rd in her first two races
the 35-year-old stumbled with a 12th-place result in Yanqinq before recovering to take 4th in Altenberg
Flock remains in touching distance of Neise
but will need to better the German (and reach the podium) to make a significant dent in the defecit

With skeleton legend Marins Dukurs part of the Great Britain coaching set-up, Weston has yet to finish outside of the podium places, and won the race at this venue during the 2022/23 campaign.
He could be primed to notch his first gold of this season in Sigulda, though Grotheer is proving to be a hard man to beat this year.
Seeing as this World Cup stage is taking place in Latvia, we thought it fitting to reserve the final spot for two home athletes.
18 year old Davis Valdovskis finished fourth at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games and is the reigning U20 world champion.

Marta Andzane finished 5th at those same Games
and also took bronze at the U20 world championships in 2023
The youngsters are yet to race in the senior World Cup tour this season
but both have been registered for the event in Sigulda as the skeleton community will get a chance to watch two up-and-coming prospects
Brad Hall and Taylor Lawrence bagged British Bobsleigh’s first medal of the World Cup season when they won silver in Sigulda on Sunday
Hall and Lawrence clocked a combined time of 1 minute 39.45 seconds
beating reigning back-to-back Olympic Champion Francesco Friedrich into third and only finishing behind 2023 World Champion Johannes Lochner in Latvia
Hall finished fourth with Greg Cackett in yesterday’s first race of a double 2-man weekend
having achieved the same result with Lawrence in the season opener in Altenberg eight days ago
Today’s result marks the first 2-man medal for the team since January 2023 when Hall and Lawrence won silver in Altenberg
It’s always an amazing feeling and we’ve missed it
“We made a habit of it the year before last but last season was a really tough one with all the injuries the team I were hit with
We came really close to a medal yesterday and last week so it’s awesome to be able to turn a big performance into a silver today
“We’ve been consistent over both days here and Taylor was outstanding today - just as Greg was yesterday
“It’s a really satisfying way to end the year and
it’s the first of many medals this season.”
The Brits were the fourth fastest starters in Run 1 and the second quickest in Run 2
They trailed Lochner by just five hundredths of a second after the first heat (the same margin by which Hall and Cackett had missed a medal on Saturday) and they again recorded the second quickest run time in the second as they finished 0.21 behind Lochner and more than half a second clear of the Polish team in fourth
The GB2 team led by Adam Baird didn’t enter today’s race
having instead headed to Igls for the Europa Cup 4-man competition
but they enjoyed a career best day on Saturday when Baird and Austin Milward secured a first-ever top ten finish at this level
who was making just his second World Cup start
were just six hundredths outside the top eight as they jumped up eight spots from last week’s showing in Germany
Baird outdrove his team’s start by three places in each heat as GB2 came down in a 2-run time of 1 minute 40.12

"The objective of the exercise is to strengthen the integration of close air support to support battalion- and brigade-level units in large-scale warfare in both urban and non-urban environments," said a release
The exercises will cover all three Baltic states
and Italian and German Eurofighter fighters will take part in them
Participants will include close air support controllers from several NATO member states
as well as NATO's extended presence Baltic and Polish Battlegroups
don't be surprised by the sight and sound of low-flying jets in Latvian airspace
both in daylight hours and in the dark, though hopefully they will not be accompanied by the sound of furious wolves
which really would be a cause for concern
particuarly if you live in the forest near Sigulda and answer to the name of Little Red Riding Hood
The 34-year-old will again be top billing in Latvia this weekend (14-15 December), though several other Olympic medallists could light up the track in Sigulda in the 4-man, 2-man, 2-woman, and monobob competitions.
We take a look at five of those candidates below.
Where else to begin than with Friedrich? Over the weekend, the German not only won the opening 4-man race in Altenberg but also placed first in the 2-man event alongside Simon Wulff.
While it was Friedrich's 100th World Cup race (and 48th victory), Wulff was making his debut in the competition — and what a debut it was.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by IBSF | Bobsleigh | Skeleton (@ibsfsliding)
At 2.02 metres tall and weighing 106 kilograms
the 23-year-old is a formidable sprinter (he has a personal best time of 10.06 seconds in the 100m)
as evidenced by the new start record |(5.07 seconds) he and Friedrich produced in their first run in Altenberg
With Wulff's power and Friedrich's experience
the top German 2-man sled boasts a frightening combination that should seem them dominate again in Latvia
Friedrich wasn't the only German topping the podium in Saxony last weekend; 2022 Olympic gold champion Laura Nolte began her title defence in the 2-woman competition with a blistering time of 1:52.14 —.65 seconds faster than compatriot Lisa Buckwitz in second.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by IBSF | Bobsleigh | Skeleton (@ibsfsliding)
A day prior the 26-year-old just edged out Buckwitz for gold in the monobob event — a discipline in which Nolte is the two-time defending world champion
All eyes will be on Nolte and Friedrich to see if the duo can repeat their double victories in Latvia and take a commanding lead in their respective disciplines
and has since gone on to establish herself as one of the top pilots in the sport
with wins at the 2024 world (2-woman) and European (monobob) championships under her belt
The 30-year-old will surely be looking to get one over Nolte in Sigulda after coming up just short in both the monobob and 2-woman races last weekend
which should make for an exciting competition this weekend
View this post on Instagram A post shared by BSD Bob & Skeleton (@bsd_bob_skeleton)
The two-time Olympic silver medallist (yes
he finished behind Freidrich on both occasions) was 0.17 seconds behind Friedrich in the 4-man and 0.41 seconds slower in the 2-man in Altenberg
and thus far seems the most likely to beat "Franz" in World Cup competition
Crashing the German bobsleigh party is Markus Treichl, who posted a surprise second-place finish in Altenberg in the 4-man event (at 0.17 seconds back, Treichl and Lochner shared silver).
View this post on Instagram A post shared by IBSF | Bobsleigh | Skeleton (@ibsfsliding)
That medal was Treichl's first in World Cup competition
so it will be interesting to see whether the 31-year-old can build on his performance and claim another top-3 finish in Latvia

Fogelis described the Latvian luge riders' starts in Sigulda as very good overall
although their own mistakes prevented them from achieving higher goals
The Latvian luge team won four medals in the fourth stage of the World Cup: one gold
The hopes of another medal in the team relay were dashed by the initially nervous atmosphere in the starting area
as well as mistakes and a fall in the final stage of the relay.
"That's the nature of sport - it should be easier to achieve good results on the home track
because in Sigulda we know every meter and the tricks of how to ride the track better," said the coach
Estimates show that approximately 5,000 spectators visited the Sigulda bobsleigh and luge track over both days of the competition
one can agree with the statement that luge sports are better watched on television

ahead of their closest competitors Tony Eggert/Florian Miller by 21 points
Marta Robežniece/Kitija Bogdanova are in fourth place in the overall World Cup standings
while Anda Upīte/Zane Kaluma are in sixth place
The first place in the overall standings is taken by the doubles crew Selīna Egle/Lara Mišela Kipa

If Sweden makes a decision and invites Latvia to be a cooperation partner
the municipality of Sigulda will gladly engage in negotiations
because it believes that participation in the Olympic Games will provide Sigulda and Latvia with "investments not only at the time of the specific event
Sigulda County Council Chairperson Līga Sausiņa (National Alliance) emphasizes that the Latvian government will make the final decision on any Latvian involvement in a Swedish bid and that it would require substantial investments in the renovation of the landmark bobsleigh and luge track at Sigulda
The head of the municipality says that it is important to understand that this is not only a matter of the Olympic Games as an event
but the future of the Sigulda bobsleigh and luge track
including the long-term impact on the economy of Latvia and the Sigulda region
Investments in the context of Sigulda region
which are planned to be made in case of having to prepare for the Olympics
are said to be necessary even if the Olympics do not take place. "Already for 2026
as a candidate to become the venue for the Olympic Games
a plan was developed for the construction of a new residential block
which in the future will provide space for both the development of the housing stock and the opening of a new preschool educational institution
the adjacent road infrastructure development is already planned," said Sausiņa
The Swedish government this week backed a bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics
according to the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC)
Sweden has approached Latvia with the intention of using the Sigulda track for luge
In an interview on Latvian Radio in October
the Director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) Vladimirs Šteinbergs explained that in the event that Latvia participates in the 2030 Winter Olympic Games by hosting competitions at the Sigulda track
then approximately 58 million euros will have to be invested in the reconstruction of this facility

The duo have now won 10 medals between them already during the first five events of the pre-Olympic season – two gold
Craig Thompson was 12th in Friday’s race having produced the fifth-fastest time in the second run
The women’s race saw Amelia Coltman secure a place on the wider podium for the second week running as she placed fifth in 1:43.24

The fire in the 'Lielais un Pemmes purvs' bog in Sigulda municipality broke out on Monday, July 26, morning
and after more than a day of extinguishing works
firefighters finally managed to contain it
It will ensure that the spread of the fire is no longer happening today,” said Andrejs Asītis, chief executive of the State Forest Service Inčukalns Forest Fire Station
The biggest difficulty in the firefighting works was access to burning sites: if firefighters managed to fight the flames within 200 meters of the roads
it was almost impossible to get deeper into the bog
The National Armed Forces (NBS) and State Border Guard helicopters were involved.
the VMD continue to measure the burned area – it is already well known that at least 80 hectares have been burned
Preliminary estimates show that even 200 hectares of swamps and forests could have been burned
“The potential cause of the fire is not known
but it could possibly be the result of the action of the berry pickers
our statistics show that fires occur as a result of human activity
malpractice,” said Zigmunds Jaunķiķis
Deputy Head of the Forest and Environmental Protection Division of VMD
more than 350 forest fires have been extinguished by the VMD this year

The final Saturday of each month is Family day at the Latvian Natural History Museum. January 28 will be dedicated to the animal of the year 2023 – the lizard
The lizard exhibit will stay open all year
there will be an exhibition on the history of the castle and Sigulda
while concerts and literary readings are planned in the exquisite halls
but over the past four years it has been restored to the form it took in 1937. At the time
the interior of the palace was made in the style of national romanticism
“The Hall has traditionally served as a venue for various events and the wedding ceremonies have also taken place here,” said head of SIgulda Development Agency Dace Preisa
“This room is unique with its interior
and at that time a number of Latvian artists were invited
The works of Latvian artists Kārlis Sūniņš and Teodors Ozoliņš have also been restored
The ceilings have been redone in all rooms
the libraries and reading rooms of the palace are currently home to the first exhibition of the history of the castle and of Sigulda
Dace Preisa said: “There will be tablets that will contain the story of the palace itself
and old books saved during the war will be there for viewing and reading
There will also be a share of audio stories
which has once been made by a copy of the old furniture and has now been restored and is equipped with an audio system
There's one story on each sofa about some phase of Sigulda's creation.”
It is hoped that the castle will open for visitors in the summer

but the company overseeing the restoration work
only informed the Sigulda district municipality half a year after the incident
The company said that the fire at the subcontractor’s workshop was an act of arson and promised to make new interior details
“We’re talking about interior decorative design elements in eight rooms
which together make up one artistic monument
Currently we’re trying to understand if they’ve been completely or partially destroyed,” said the inspection’s Administrative Development Department Director Baiba Mūrniece
The inspection has requested an explanation and is currently evaluating further steps for bringing the person responsible to justice
Only after receiving more information will they be able to fully assess the damage
RERE Meistari were asked to restore wall panels
The subcontractor sent RERE Būve 1 a letter listing the lost elements
which included several decorative radiator panels from several rooms
cloakroom wall panels and decorative wall panels
Apparently the devices carrying the digital restoration documents
photos and reports were also burned in the fire
"A criminal process has been initiated in regards to the accident
and the investigation process is ongoing,” the letter also said
The company’s foreman Juris Grodņa explains their reluctance to inform the responsible institutions immediately after the accident: “What I was most concerned about in this situation was that with a quick report we could incite an unnecessary uproar
We understand that we didn’t inform them
but it’s how each person perceives it.”
