2025) – Charlotte FC today announced the Club has waived midfielder Ben Bender
made 51 career MLS appearances for the Club
“Ben has been with us since our inaugural season
and we’re thankful for all his contributions to the Club over the past four years,” said General Manager Zoran Krneta
“His playing time has decreased over the past two seasons
and he found it difficult to break into the team
Consistent minutes are crucial to development as a young player
so we believe this move is in the best interest of both parties
including the addition of Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty to strengthen our backline following injuries to two of our fullbacks
we needed to free up space on our senior roster which led us to make this difficult decision.”

Trump’s Brutal Immigration Agenda Has No Precedent
– This story began as a simple conversation on a podcast: the “Let’s Eat
Orlando with Amy Drew and Biggie” podcast (available on virtually any podcast platform and viewable on YouTube
when the errant mention of a chicken tender chain devolved into disbelief from my pod partner
Deli Fresh Threads’ Anthony “Biggie” Bencomo
And as he rattled off brands I’d never sampled – Raising Cane’s
inspiring the idea that the combination of his practiced palate
would make a good pairing to rank the titans of tender from 10 to 1
we hit up a roster of big names known either specifically for tenders or at the very least
We scored each on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being best) in four categories: breading
chicken and signature sauce and discussed our findings and nauseam
That Popeyes landed at the bottom was a surprise for us both
Popeyes was one of only three restaurants on this roster that I’d even been to before this deep-fried odyssey
and it swept Chick-fil-A in an informal Orlando Sentinel staff poll when I’d documented the Chicken Sandwich Wars of 2019
Its spicy remoulade and crunch edged out its milder competitor
far more a fast-food regular when it comes to fried chicken sandos
“They looked good in the box and they were super crispy,” Biggie said
packaged sauce is never going to get high marks (Biggie feels differently
And the breading/seasoning ranked low – for me
There’s a lot of style going on at Chicken Guy
with his cockscomb and shades and goatee-like wattle
mirrors the vibe that turned co-founder Guy Fieri from unknown to superstar
Staffers were super friendly (we even got an extra tender in our order) and helpfully explained the two-sauce policy
These were the high points of the experience
The Donkey Sauce (essentially garlic mayo) was quite tasty
though we enjoyed the Special Sauce even more
The chicken was crispy and hot and fresh but tasted oddly … familiar
“This felt the most fast-foody,” said Biggie
“Kind of like they were frozen Tyson tenders
but a little leveled up from the deep-fryer.”
it didn’t have much flavor,” Biggie opined
The discussion that followed debated whether this was precisely the intent
a nod to the 11 herbs and spices in KFC’s original recipe chicken
It would have been nice if we’d tasted at least one or two of those in the chicken
but if the sauce accidentally spills on the way home from the drive-thru
If for you the chicken is just a vehicle for the stuff you plan to stick it in
Tenders are a relatively recent advent for Jollibee
a well-known Filipino brand where traditional fried chicken is a specialty
but we agreed that your best chicken bet here is still bone-in
just get two mango peach pies and call it a day
this is Jollibee’s most crave-able item by far
but Raising Cane’s was jumping when we popped in at lunchtime
amid asking for our “order name,” that one of their regulars changes his every day for fun
“This man literally comes here for lunch every day?”
I could easily pivot into a tirade about eating local
“I think their popularity is just about the viral social media stuff with the Cane’s sauce.”
of people submerging their tenders in overflowing cups of this condiment
fresh and better overall than the one at Saucy – doesn’t have much flavor
1 if it had better seasoning,” said Biggie
Here’s where you can really note the subjectivity of taste
watching Biggie squirrel the extra packet of Chick-fil-A sauce into his pocket
It was the only thing on my entire sheet that scored a zero
though I couldn’t identify any specific flavor
“Excuse me,” Biggie asked the man wiping down the adjacent booth
before relaying that a founder of PDQ (Bob Basham) was also a founder of Outback Steakhouse
“It’s pretty much the same as their Bloomin’ Onion sauce.”
I loved that we got some brand history on our visit to PDQ
which stands for “people dedicated to quality.” The gent with the facts is proof they’re doing a good job with that
like they made it five minutes before we walked in
It was just enough to push these interestingly seasoned tenders up into the top three
Full disclosure: If this round-up wasn’t grounded in a traditional tender
but humongous) were of very good quality: hot
PS: “The Reaper,” for which I was required to sign a waiver
but the tenders themselves were slightly superior
“This is the fast-food place I would go specifically for chicken tenders,” Biggie says
“They call themselves ‘the filet mignon of chicken’ and I think that fits
You can tell they just use the tenderloin.”
As someone who has never gone anywhere specifically for chicken tenders
and likely never will again unless my boss tells me to
On both the first stop and the final follow-up
the tender from Huey’s was hot and fresh and very nicely seasoned
I want to be eating a good piece of chicken,” Biggie summarized

A Rockville preschool teacher was arrested April 25 as part of a child predator sting conducted by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) in Virginia
who worked at the Bender Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington (Bender JCC) in Rockville
was taken into custody following an internet chat operation carried out during the week of April 21
The operation resulted in charges against eight men
Police said Sherman believed he was communicating with minors under the age of 15 during the operation
He has been charged with using communications systems to facilitate offenses involving children
“Protecting children from online predators is one of our highest priorities, and I commend our investigative team and partners for their diligent efforts in securing these arrests,” LCSO Sheriff Michael Chapman said in a statement
“These disturbing cases underscore the importance of parents actively monitoring what their children do online and on messaging platforms
and teaching them how to stay safe.”
Bender JCC immediately fired Sherman on April 25 after hearing of the arrest, according to a written statement from the school
He is prohibited from returning to Bender JCC in any capacity
“The arrest had no connection to any conduct that took place at Bender JCC,” the school said in the statement
“Sherman had no previous allegations made against him at the time of his hire
the Bender JCC conducted regular background checks and screenings during Michael Sherman’s employment that did not yield any prior misconduct.”

went on to be one of the most well-known and captivating videos ever posted
As the years passed and I began doing gymnastics myself
the once-anonymous gymnasts gradually became recognizable
it was equally as spectacular as her mount
featuring a flic-flac swingdown connected to back extension roll to a free headstand
and also a handstand forward roll to cantilever off the end of the beam
She also threw in another one arm handstand in the middle of the beam
and then transitioned into one of the best planches I’ve ever seen in women’s gymnastics
What’s interesting is she tended to struggle with what are considered the “easy” skills in her routine
like her first acrobatic combination of back handspring to back layout stepout
I get the impression that she was more comfortable on her hands (or even her head) than her feet!
I think the video sums up my feelings about originality in gymnastics
There’s no point in doing the same thing as everyone else
The best gymnasts are technically perfect and original
it’s better to be original than technically perfect if you can’t be both

Derek Bender will send a text to one of his former teammates
a ghosted pariah to a team that has nothing left to do with him
More than five months have passed since the day the former Minnesota Twins minor league catcher was accused of giving away pitches to opposing batters on the Lakeland Flying Tigers
trying to ensure his team would miss the playoffs so a long
barely a month after receiving a $297,500 signing bonus as a sixth-round draft selection
Bender has existed in a kind of baseball limbo: technically still a professional baseball player
but shunned by the rest of that fraternity
He’s reached out to players in his draft class
guys he lived with at the spring training complex
“There are a lot of times where you’re talking with people that you thought you were friends with
they just don’t look at you the same,” Bender said
“I’ve heard my friends get questioned about me
“It’s not like I’m getting accused of committing a crime.”
But he is accused of betraying the people he worked with
He is accused of undermining every single one of them
stay out of the playoffs and ensure a competitive season would come to an early end
The game’s history is filled with players who are accused of cheating for their own benefit
and he is trying to regain some level of control over his life
But he is also coming to terms with his situation: That for the rest of his life
those around him may have a nagging thought in the back of their minds
When the story of the Twins minor league catcher accused of selling out his own team went viral on ESPN in September
He hasn’t spoken at all about the matter until agreeing to a February interview with The Athletic in his rented house near Albany
Major League Baseball has been investigating Bender for months for a violation of Rule 21(a)
which prohibits players from intentionally losing games
MLB and players’ union all declined to comment for this story
League sources briefed on the investigation say the inquiry has uncovered evidence against Bender
More than a dozen people have spoken to investigators
including multiple with direct knowledge of the alleged conduct
despite the other five games in that series being aired
with the opportunity to apply for reinstatement after a year
For the first 25 minutes of a 90-minute interview
the conversation circled around the only truly relevant question
He talked of his practices with the Siena College baseball team
Spoke of the hours leading up to his final game with the Twins
Finally it came time to ask the question that Bender had yet to proactively answer himself
“You were accused of giving away pitches as they were coming up to bat
“And I’ll live with this until the day I die
I never tried to give the opposing team an advantage against my own team.”
Bender wanted the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels’ season to be over
joking prior to their doubleheader against Lakeland that it wouldn’t be a bad thing if they let a grounder slip under their gloves
A couple losses would eliminate them from playoff contention
and that’s exactly what Bender was counting on
and he wasn’t talking about actually throwing a game
His desire to leave was rooted in a need for a reset that he felt would help improve his game
“A lot of us are coming off of college seasons
coming off of a pretty grueling summer schedule,” Bender said
“Then you get there and you’re hitting .200
you’re facing some of the best stuff consistently you’ve ever seen
“The conversations are that everybody’s ready to go home.”
that came to define his final week in Fort Myers
He’d verbally sparred with player development coaches
arguing with them on his offensive approach
he’d done a tarp slide on Lakeland’s field — a huge no-no
a lot of personality,” said longtime hitting coach and family friend Dan Sausville
… I gave him lots of advice to keep his mouth shut when he got to the minor leagues
Sausville said that Bender was “in a bad place” that week
and that he had texted with one of Bender’s agents
discussing how Bender clearly needed to get home
Bender was called into his manager’s office following that doubleheader against Lakeland
Lakeland manager Andrew Graham had informed his Fort Myers counterpart that his players heard Bender giving away pitches before they were thrown
Attempts to reach Graham and Fort Myers manager Brian Meyer for comment were unsuccessful
The Athletic also attempted to contact numerous players and coaches from both teams
as well as the home plate umpire; none could be reached for comment
Bender said there was nothing he said that could be interpreted as giving away pitches
and he couldn’t think of any reason someone would make it up
Fort Myers had already lost six games in a row
was yanked in the second inning after allowing five of the first seven batters that frame to reach in the 6-0 loss
His 1 2/3 innings matched his shortest start of the season
Bender wasn’t allowed in the dugout the following two games
He watched from the bullpen as the season wrapped up
“I talked to him,” Bender said of his attempt at a conversation with Dunn
were willing to keep him in the organization
He needed to admit to everything and apologize for it
But when the club asked what he was sorry for
had already conducted an internal investigation led by GM Jeremy Zoll
this was no longer just a question of immaturity
This was a player they could no longer employ
“The only thing I had left was my character at that point,” Bender said
we’ll release you.’ I knew there was no bluffing involved.”
He played just one year of high school ball at St
“He set the tone in our program for how to work
different from any player we’ve had before,” said St
Bender moved on to Coastal Carolina University
a baseball program that has produced major leaguers Tommy La Stella
Bender broke out for CCU in 2023 with 19 home runs and then excelled in the Cape Cod League that summer
There was talk of him as a Day 1 selection in the MLB Draft
The Twins were intrigued by the power potential in his right-handed bat
he doesn’t leave the one-bedroom home he’s rented without his hood up
fearing that even a friendly chat might be had with someone secretly assuming the worst
He said he feels guilty because photos of him in his Coastal Carolina uniform were being used in news articles
He’s spent the whole offseason running from this
Weeks of sleeping on couches of his friends’ college apartments in Toledo and Richmond to avoid going home
He didn’t want to go back to his parents in South Carolina
a place so closely associated with a sport he’d begun to believe he’d never play again
Bender’s parents have taken his situation hard
checks MLB’s press releases every day to see if there’s an announcement from the league about his status
and has met with a lawyer about possible steps to sue
says she wakes up in the middle of the night and cries
“It breaks my heart for my kid,” Diane said
“that it’s a possibility that he might not be able to play this game again at a high level
he crashed with a childhood friend in Albany
“I wanted to be around my friends,” Bender said
“… I wanted to be somewhere where baseball didn’t matter as much.”
There’s an uneaten and unheated burrito on his plate
and a jumbo Chick-fil-A cup rests on a small table in front of the chair where he sits
That he was speaking publicly at all was so controversial within his own circles that he said he was unable to sleep the night prior
strongly advised him against doing an interview
It wanted to wait until the league resolved its investigation into him
Torn between the instinct to give his side and the need for patience
he eventually decided he couldn’t wait any longer
“It’s about gaining control over my life,” Bender said
I’m not doing this as a last-ditch effort to get back into affiliate ball
It’s more of this is the start of me taking control of my life again
Because I’ve let this completely control me for months now.”
said he was unaware the interview had taken place
And after The Athletic reached out to Rosner to request comment
“We would have preferred that he not do any media requests or sit down with anyone from the media until this investigation was closed,” said Rosner
adding that it indicated to them he was no longer taking Octagon’s advice
“We don’t make comments when investigations are ongoing,” Rosner said
Even though he is denying the allegations now
Bender said he trusted Octagon’s advice at the time
which is why he declined to comment when the story first broke
What came after Bender’s no-comment to ESPN was something Bender never anticipated
He says he was unaware of the reporter Jeff Passan
a prominent and well-sourced baseball writer
Bender didn’t understand the reach his story would garner
he experienced the surreal feeling of getting a push notification about himself
aggregated articles started pouring in from news outlets all over the country
Messages on all of his social media accounts
Bender and his buddies sat and watched it unfold in real time
“I had to go dark for at least three days,” Bender said
“I had to private all my social media accounts
The world has moved on from this story in a way that Bender still can’t
And now with no agent and a shredded reputation
He sat down with investigators in November
Trying to convince them that he is innocent
with the possibility of a career-ending ban if they decide otherwise
“I feel like my whole life has been centered around baseball
“This whole situation made me fall out of love with it
But I realized that I want to win more baseball games in my career
In the back of Bender’s car is a large Twins duffel bag that still carries all of his baseball equipment
His relationship with the team that gave him a chance is complicated
he’s complimentary: “I don’t fault anybody in the Twins organization
“It never really felt like the Twins had my back.”
It remains a very real possibility that Bender’s Twins bag will be the last big league gear he’ll ever receive
He’s done the obvious calculation in his mind
This never would have happened to a first-round pick
There’s no impetus for another team to take him on
The sport of baseball could very easily continue on without Derek Bender
This accusation could follow him throughout his life
The longtime hockey fan wants to someday be a psychologist for NHL players
Bender views his next job as a chance at redemption
He’ll earn just $1,200 this summer playing independent ball for the Brockton Rox of the Frontier League
It’s a move that’s more about proving to himself and everyone else just how much he cares about winning
Even with a GM and coach who have known Bender for years
And nothing is guaranteed until he actually takes the field
The results of MLB’s investigation could impact his ability to play
“I think the biggest thing was being willing to give a guy a second chance
to do what he’s trained his whole life to do
and what he loves,” said Rox GM Jerod Edmondson
who said he didn’t investigate the allegations before adding Bender
There were stretches in which the two talked 20 times a day
But he’s not blind to the circumstances that led Bender here
and remains open to the idea that there could be more to this accusation than he knows
he needs to sit in the mirror and ask himself: why isn’t everyone jumping up to stick up for me?” Sausville said
“I think a lot of it comes from selfish immaturity
‘I’m trying to make the big leagues … and I don’t care who I piss off on the way there.”
Bender wants to prove he can still be a catcher
even though he knows his only path might be a move to first base
recognizing that pitchers will be apprehensive to throw to him
He wants to tell the world that he’s a person who loves those close to him
I’m a guy that (teammates) want in their foxhole.”
He wants people to accept that he’s a changed athlete
who’s done complaining about having to play
“You’ll never hear that come out of my mouth again,” he said
and I don’t want it all to go away because of one accusation.”
he doesn’t feel like he owes it to anyone to plead his innocence
Bender might not feel an obligation to prove his credibility
“People will think whatever they want to think
Nobody’s ever going to be here and say ‘Yeah

beautiful tribute and most importantly beautiful wife
you and your family are in our prayers during this difficult time
We’re praying God gives you peace and understanding
Sharon left us as she was in life – a peaceful person
I will miss all our bike rides and visits to state parks
This world is a better and more beautiful place because of you
Sharon was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met
I didn’t have the opportunity to know her for very long
We wish we were there to support you but just know that our thoughts and prayers are with you
We will catch up with you when we are back in the country
Remember our garage sale times before Matt and Keith started grade school
Also remember our times being co-leaders with cub scouts
So thankful that Matt and Keith are still best friends
It was so great of her making a quilt for Keith’s kids after Alison died
Remember our sharing our vacation memories
but you get the idea that Sharon was a great person
I worked at Meramec until 2013 in Career and Employment Service and would have to enlist the assistance of Sharon for scheduling classroom presentations with faculty
She was always very sweet and met you with a smile

Derek Bender, the former Minnesota Twins minor league catcher who is under MLB investigation for telling opposing hitters what pitches were coming
denied the allegations in an interview with The Athletic as he remains out of professional baseball
"No," Bender told The Athletic, in an interview published Thursday
when asked if he gave away pitches to opposing batters
"And I'll live with this until the day I die
I never tried to give the opposing team an advantage against my own team."

Fort Myers coaches were notified by Lakeland coaches about Bender's pitch tipping after the game
Sources told ESPN that Bender had told teammates he wanted the season to be over
Bender said he joked to teammates about letting a ground ball go under their glove
Major League Baseball's investigation of the incident continues
and Bender could face a permanent ban from the league
"I had to go dark for at least three days," Bender told The Athletic of the reaction to the initial story
"I had to private all my social media accounts

He said he'll play for the Brockton Rox of the independent Frontier League this summer
Bender said he hasn't heard from any of his former teammates
"There are a lot of times where you're talking with people that you thought you were friends with
they just don't look at you the same," Bender told The Athletic
"I've heard my friends get questioned about me
"It's not like I'm getting accused of committing a crime."
Bender told The Athletic that the Twins were willing to keep him in the organization if he admitted to the accusations and apologize
but he wouldn't say what he was apologizing for
"The only thing I had left was my character at that point," Bender told The Athletic
we'll release you.' I knew there was no bluffing involved."
His agents at Octagon told The Athletic that they had dropped Bender as a client because they had told him not to do any interviews until the MLB investigation was closed
"It's about gaining control over my life," Bender told The Athletic of why he did the interview

Long and white with stripes running the length of the long-roof O/SA wagon is how you’d describe Bob Bender’s Stock eliminator Chevy
A regular on the East Coast Division 1 scene
racer has been driving his Chevrolet since purchasing it from the Stinson family a few decades ago
And while you’d normally see Bender at Maple Grove
she made me promise I'd continue to do this and do the western swing like we had discussed prior to her sickness,” Bender said
fulfilling their dream of racing at the Winternationals
He’s been enjoying the sights and meeting with many of the Division 6 and 7 racers
lasting until the semifinals where he fell to Jeff Adkinson on a red light
“The Winternationals was humbling,” stated Bender
I stopped prior to the water box for them to clean the starting line
and I heard the announcer talking about my wife passing
Bender was also impressed with the tracks and the West Coast racers
The full-size Kingswood wagon is powered by a 350 small-block rated at 255 hp and backed with a Turbo 350 and a 12-bolt rear that packs a steep 5.57 gear ratio
It can go .90 under in soft air and a second under in sea-level conditions when running in P/SA
but I couldn't get there,” he said with a smile
I went into the service in 1969 and came out in 1971
We asked Bender what he loves most about the big Chevy
That thing's uglier than me,' " he remembered
Bender will make the cross-country haul back home where he’ll compete in the Lucas Oil Divisional Series at Maple Grove

He was the middle child of three boys to Julius and Hilaria (Bruening) Bender
He grew up on the family farm just west of St
He learned many lessons on the farm that guided him through his life
He loved being the keeper of the family tales and took great pride in knowing a great deal of family history – his own as well as pretty much everyone else’s in Cedar County
Helena and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1957
He spoke fondly of all his school friends and enjoyed playing football and also acting in one act plays
He did a tour to serve his county in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1960
He was awarded good conduct and sharpshooter badges during his service
He met Norma Jean Winckler at a dance and they married on June 10
They looked forward to celebrating their 60th Anniversary in 2025
Many a dance was done to big band music that they both loved
but then found his next calling by joining the welding crew at Kolberg’s
He enjoyed his time there making many friends
He kept very detailed notebooks of all his work there
To say Robert enjoyed his retirement is an understatement
He loved the honey do lists that he did at his own pace of course
He would spend hours figuring out the “BEST” way to do things
He loved visits from everyone that stopped by which usually ended with a little nip of the Lord
He was very so proud of his kids and grandkids
loving to hear about everyone’s activities and accomplishments
He loved that he has a grandchild in the military as well as one that works at his old stomping ground at Astec
He always loved hearing stories and telling them too
That will be truly missed by all who knew him.

2025 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday
2025 at Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church in St
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton
Norma went out on her own terms as far as we are all concerned
you know she loved a good argument (debate) and usually came out on top with her no-nonsense way and take on life
at home to Hubert and Edna (Fischer) Winckler
She was the oldest of nine and was put in charge of helping keep her siblings in toe
It was a task we can all say she really took to heart
Her family was incredibly important to her
She was her dad’s right hand helper for many years
If we only knew the true number of books she purchased over the years from bibles
and of course a good mystery or romance novel
She graduated from Tyndall High School in 1962 and entered in the workforce in Yankton while living with some girlfriends in an apartment
She moved with her new husband to his family farm near St
Helena where she took on the role of farm hand as well as new wife
Her family grew with the birth of the three children
She was a great teacher of what a good day's work looked like
the kids remember helping wherever we could – gardening
It was important to her that the animals were taken care of
She loved all the farm cats and dogs that Dad “would allow us to have”
Norma’s work career was not just on the farm
She was employed at Gurney’s but spent a large amount of her career at Sunshine and Econo Foods
working in the grocery and meat departments before becoming the receiving clerk for many years
This is where she gained the title of “Sarge in Charge”
NOTHING came in or out without Norma knowing about it
She had many happy memories of her time there
She finished out her working years at Walmart in the shoe and jewelry departments
She may have retired but for Norma her work didn’t stop
Always on the go looking for the next bargain
a goodwill find or coupon that was safe from Norma
came home with a few things she really didn’t want because “he was going to get that too cheap”
you know she would have wanted it that way
Norma was as blunt as a spoon but that’s why we loved her so much
I’m sure if any of us were going through anything tough it was Norma you wanted fighting for you
Because you certainly didn’t want her against you
she hated to lose at anything – especially losing in cards
Norma did have a softer side which was shown when she was helping others or talking about her family
She adored them and was so very proud of them
her beautiful penmanship was in a card just for you
She loved everyone’s fur-babies as well
making sure they had extra treats from Grandma
Norma loved to cook hardy meals for her family
Hunger was never an issue as her creative side came out and when she wasn’t sure what to call it
Dummies and fried chicken (dad’s favorite) made in the electric frying pan
The kids were proud graduates of the “eat it or starve club” if you know
There was always a sweet treat in the house like chocolate wacky cake with peanut butter frosting which was always a favorite
But at the holidays it was always Grandma Edna’s kuchen
If you went hungry at any gathering where Norma was
The one thing that still mystifies us though
is how could a woman that would only eat a well-done steak like and eat the heck out of “tiger meat”
For those that don’t know tiger meat is raw hamburger with spices served with saltine crackers
Her favorite drink was probably a good cup of egg coffee or a classic Coke
but she would celebrate a special day with a glass of sweet wine
She would however partake in a good tomato beer with her favorite son-in-law on a hot summer day
Advise from Norma: Life may not be easy at times but it’s the struggles that make us stronger when we come out on the other side
Thanks for being one of the strongest and hardest working persons we’ve ever had the privilege to know
Norma is survived by her children and spouses: Steve (Becky)
and Emma; great grandchildren: Ellis and Brynlee; siblings: Joe (Johnny)
Norma is proceeded in death by her parents and in-laws
Hubert & Edna and Julius & Hilaria; her husband
Robert J; siblings and in-law: Mike (Barb)

a pre-school teacher from Rockville was among eight men arrested by The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO)
in collaboration with the Northern Virginia Washington DC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (NOVA-DC ICAC)
after concluding an internet chat operation during the week of April 21
2025 that resulted in detectives obtaining charges on eight adult males who were trying to use the internet to exploit children in Loudoun County
According to a FOX 5 report
Sherman worked in several positions at the Bender JCC Rockville community center and was more recently a pre-school teacher
The Bender JCC immediately terminated his employment on the day of the arrest and notified parents about it
The sheriff’s office shared that the adult males believed they were communicating with minors under the age of 15 on a variety of chat and social media platforms
Seven are in custody at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on no bond; one (Sherman) was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Center
FOX 5 also stated that in a written statement
“Michael Sherman had no previous allegations made against him at the time of his hire
the Bender JCC conducted regular background checks and screenings during Michael Sherman’s employment that did not yield prior misconduct.” They went on to say
“Bender JCC is fully committed to providing a safe environment for children and youth and has had an ongoing partnership with the Center for Hope of Lifebridge Health

Bender’s appointment follows the Board’s decision to terminate Ashley Buchanan for cause
An investigation conducted by outside counsel and overseen by the Audit Committee of the Board determined Buchanan violated company policies by directing the company to engage in vendor transactions that involved undisclosed conflicts of interest
Buchanan’s termination is unrelated to the company’s performance
results of operations and did not involve any other company personnel
and the company has withdrawn his nomination for election as a Director at the Company’s 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders
“The Board has full confidence in Michael to serve our customers and associates as Interim CEO and deliver on our commitments to our shareholders,” Chair of the Nominating and ESG Committee John Schlifske stated
