The Danish Henrik F. Obel Foundation has granted the 2024 Obel Award to a body of 36 public works by the Mexican architectural design firm Colectivo C733
Land and Urban Development Ministry (Sedatu)
the projects restored vulnerable urban and rural areas across Mexico through a collaborative and community-focused approach

“Colectivo C733 exemplifies the power of collective action and collaborative design to rapidly respond to urgent urban needs,” the jury said
“Their ability to transform 36 communities through thoughtful
resource-efficient and dignified architectural interventions is a blueprint for future public works projects worldwide.”
the jury sought projects that were designed not only for the community but with the community
“Colectivo C733 points towards new approaches to the practice of designing and shaping our collectively built environment,” the Obel jury wrote
Colectivo C733 is made up of the architecture practices of Gabriela Carrillo (Taller Gabriela Carrillo) and Carlos Facio & José Amozurrutia (TO)
along with Eric Valdez (Labg) and Israel Espin
flexible and cost-efficient designs that allow for different combinations and contextualized variations
The award’s judges said that the collective’s success is particularly remarkable given that they completed in 36 months what would have initially taken years
Bringing together 30 architects and a multidisciplinary team of consultants
they compressed the process within a timeframe “practically unheard of by today’s standards.”

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3: Fans wait to see if Anees Bazmee
Madhuri Dixit and Vidya Balan can repeat the franchise’s success
Bollywood is looking to see if Ajay Devgn’s Singham Again and Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 will restore the audience’s faith in the industry that has been consistently disappointing through the year
both Diwali releases are the third parts of hugely successful action and comedy-horror franchises respectively
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar starred in Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) and then allowed Kartik Aaryan to step into the sequel 15 years later in 2022
when Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 hits the screens next week
it will find it has to contend with Akshay who plays super cop Veer Sooryavanshi in Singham Again after making a thrilling entry with this gritty character in Sooryavanshi (2021)
While the Singham series has been Rohit Shetty’s directorial all the while and a part of the action director’s Cop Universe films
the Bhool Bhulaiyaa films were helmed by Priyadarshan first and then subsequently by Anees Bazmee
who brilliantly played dual roles in the first part
returns in the third 17 years later as her avatar of the ghost of classical dancer Manjulika from Bengal who gave audiences the creeps in 2007
it appears Manjulika is not the ghost in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 but Madhuri Dixit is
but the trailer was extremely gripping and audiences and fans of the stellar star cast (Kartik
Tripti Dimri) cannot wait for the curtains to go up on the Bazmee Diwali directorial

The two stone monuments depict local Olmec rulers and are at least 2,500 years old (Late Olmec period)
The 2,500-year-old Olmec relief from the state of Tabasco
The Olmecs were the earliest known major civilization in the Mesoamerica
They flourished during Mesoamerica’s formative period
dating from as early as 1600 BCE to about 400 BCE
They lived along the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the modern-day Mexican states of Tabasco and Veracruz
Archaeologists do not know what these people called themselves; the name Olmec is a Nahuatl (Aztec language) word and means the rubber people
The Olmecs laid many of the foundations for the civilizations
They appeared to practice ritual bloodletting
The Olmecs are known for monumental sacred complexes and huge stone heads they carved from volcanic rocks
Many of their sites suffered systematic and deliberate destruction sometime between 400 and 300 BCE
The 2,500-year-old Olmec relief from Tabasco
The newly-discovered Olmec reliefs were made of limestone; each has a diameter of 1.4 m (4.6 feet) and weighs 700 kg
“They have a similar iconography: in the upper part and surrounded by celestial jaws
a diadem formed by four corncobs stands out
a mirror with the so-called Olmec cross (glyph that marks the attire of the elite and is associated with the figure of the jaguar),” said Dr
an archaeologist with the Centro de Estudios Mayas at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
“Footprints can be seen on the sides; in front
the face from which the ‘grumpy mouth’ stands out
The stone reliefs were found in the municipality of Tenosique in Tabasco
“These monuments come from the Middle Usumacinta region
located between the mouth of the Chacamax River and the mouth of the San Pedro River,” the archaeologists said
“Among the reliefs known from the Late Olmec horizon
when La Venta emerged as the guiding center of the civilization
five of them represent figures of ‘contortionists.’”
“One of them came from Balancán and is currently stored at the Regional Museum of Anthropology in Villahermosa; another one
is stored at the Pomoná Site Museum; and three came from Tenosique.”
“These five monuments have similar representation of large faces
who also practiced ‘contortionism’ not in a playful sense
“By adopting the position in which they appear portrayed — which reduces the flow of the blood to the brain — the characters reached trance states in divinatory ceremonies
“It is possible that these faces evolved and derived in the Mayan ajaw altars
such as those at the Caracol site in Belize
which tells us about the permanence of this theme for more than three centuries
already for the Early Classic and Late Classic periods (495 to 790 CE),” the researchers said
“The word ajaw means ‘he who shouts,’ ‘he who commands,’ ‘he who orders;’ and in these Mayan monuments the mouth stands out
especially from these circular reliefs of ‘contortionists’.”
Shakuntala Devi is based on the life and works of maths wizard Shakuntala Devi who was also popularly known as the Human Computer
The biographical comedy-drama stars Vidya Balan and boy
The Bollywood actress who appears in sarees and pigtails and then in grey
has poured her heart into the material and it shows
She looks the part and is convincing as she brings the late mathematician to life with her quirks
Balan can even make solving maths look endearing
And for someone who has hated maths all her life
I almost tried to answer a few bouncers thrown at her
__________________________________________________________________________
While the premise revolves around the many achievements of the larger-than-life persona that was Devi
the film is a complex (often relatable) yet precious relationship between a mother and daughter played by Vidya Balan and Sanya Malhotra
In close collaboration with Shakuntala Devi’s daughter Anupama Banerji
the other women at task have managed to showcase the other side of the icon that wasn’t in the know – that of a work-in-progress mom who loved her darling Anu but expressed it in her own twisted ways
They have managed to show that she is a woman with unapologetic aspirations
the tribe is supported by a hoard of talented actors like Amit Sadh
Jisshu Sengupta and Prakash Belawadi amongst others
Menon has also written the screenplay along with Nayanika Mahtani
The dialogues for the scenes are written by Ishita Moitra
While the cinematography is done by Keiko Nakahara
Another asset is the film’s background score and then the songs which have been composed by Karan Kulkarni and Sachin–Jigar respectively
Abundantia Entertainment has bankrolled the biopic and good on them for backing the right stories
Vidya Balan shoulders the film with her nuanced performance as an eccentric mathematician
But more so as a mother who tries hard to not become her mother
Vidya Balan as Devi is not your ordinary mom
toh normal kyun hona?” I’m afraid I might have mixed-up the exact words but it is the sentiment that matters
And long after you’ve seen the film because that’s how good Balan is
And anyway she had great stuff to build on
A child prodigy who became the bread-winner of the family
doing maths shows in schools but never attending one
And even then she could lessons in feminism to her elder kin about being a ‘badi aurat’
probably even without the knowledge of the term
Balan takes over and portrays the same flamboyance in finer ways
She would take care of unruly men and unfaithful lovers just like she took care of them numericals and mind you; she never loses
she set sails for London in a bid to conquer the world
That and to escape her past (again you’ll know) and honestly
get away from her parents who treated her like a money-dispensing machine
Devi listens to her heart and laughs without abandon
And Balan does the part utmost justice as goes on to make friends
connections and ways to put on a bigger show
it is her stint as an unconventional mother that makes a home in the heart
Full props to Ishita Moitra for giving her dialogues that packed punch and more
It really takes her one word ‘Amma’ and not more to leave you with gooseflesh and a lump in your threat
a lot of it must and should go to Sanya fits the bill perfectly
(b) She didn’t remind me of Babita from Dangal where she also played a daughter
she hates maths and resents her absentee mother
the broker and really anyone who tries to compare her with the birth-giver
much so that she doesn't want her own kids and her ambition is to not become her mother
in these moments where Malhotra bares her heart
And thanks to Karan Kulkarni’s score the tension is always heightened between the mother and duo
Giving Vidya and Sanya the scope to explore the dynamics that is multi-layered
Director Anu Menon establishes that right in the beginning and the element is consistent through the duration of the film
Even when she redefines the outdated tropes of motherhood
none of it would have panned the way it did if it weren’t for director Anu Menon and I couldn’t emphasize more on it
“Women telling women stories” is the magic behind it and it definitely deserves its own genre
Menon takes extra efforts in delving into the aforesaid
multi-layered bond between the two pivotal characters in her story and renders them with enough power to be vulnerable and flawed
Never pandering to the male gaze and setting a feminist narrative even without claiming to be feminist
She even attempts at redefining motherhood and does away with the guilting tropes with gems like “Koi maa perfect nahi hoti.” Even regressive notion about marriage are questioned and the fact that she does it without villianising the male characters--played by Jisshu Sengupta and Amit Sadh--also speaks volumes about her capabilities
Both Sengupta and Sadh play small parts but their roles never seem sidelined with the Menon’s treatment
the screen shuffles between dates to showcase how a woman could well lose her individuality but it never gets preachy
it quickly circles back to the rift between the mother and the daughter who also experiences motherhood in similar ways like her mom
if there’s was a little more of maths and Shakuntala Devi did what she did
More stuff about a woman in saree and pigtails
solving tough numbers and making a room full of men uncomfortable…
I won’t lie but I wish there was more screen time designated for the method behind Devi’s madness (for the lack of a better word)
life is more than just work but since she was considered maths more than just that
Many may debate that the biopic focuses on her journey more than her notable accolades--unlike other biopics--cause she is a woman but that doesn’t come under the purview of the review
probably the only other thing that stuck like a sore thumb is the erratic south Indian accent that Vidya struggles with
Especially beside Jisshu Sengupta and his Bengali and Prakash Belawadi and his Kannada
I don’t mean to generalize but Shakuntala Devi is a wholesome movie with that will make you reflect
You might feel the need to check your phone at points but you will be happy at the end if you resist the dip in the flow
Shakuntala Devi is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video

An ancient mangrove forest hidden in rainforest in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula is the focus of a new study by researchers from Mexico and the United States
Located 170 kilometers from the ocean on the banks of the San Pedro Martir River in the municipality of Balancán
the ecosystem is unusual because mangroves are usually found along tropical and subtropical coastlines
“Combining multiple lines of evidence, we demonstrate that this extant forest is a relict from a past, warmer world when relative sea levels were 6 to 9 meters higher than at the present,” the researchers said in a paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America
A relict is a remnant of a formerly widespread species that persists in an isolated area
“Our finding highlights the extensive landscape impacts of past climate change on the world’s coastline and opens opportunities to better understand future scenarios of relative sea-level rise,” said the researchers
who work at the University of California in the United States
the Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco and Pronatura Noroeste
geological and vegetation data with sea-level modeling
the researchers concluded that the San Pedro mangrove forest was established in its current location in Tabasco during the last interglacial period about 125,000 years ago
when sea levels were high enough to flood the Tabasco lowlands
It remained there in isolation even as oceans receded during the last glaciation
“The most amazing part of this study is that we were able to examine a mangrove ecosystem that has been trapped in time for more than 100,000 years,” said Octavio Aburto-Oropeza
a University of California marine ecologist and one of the co-authors
“There is certainly more to discover about how the many species in this ecosystem adapted throughout different environmental conditions over the past 100,000 years
Studying these past adaptations will be very important for us to better understand future conditions in a changing climate.”
a botanist at the Juárez Autonomous University and a native of Tabasco
brought the mangrove forest to the other researchers’ attention in 2016
“I used to fish here and play on these mangroves as a kid
but we never knew precisely how they got there,” he said
“That was the driving question that brought the team together.”
one of two University of California ecologists who led the genetic work to estimate the origin and age of the mangroves
described the study’s findings as “extraordinary.”
“Not only are the red mangroves here with their origins printed in their DNA
but the whole coastal lagoon ecosystem of the last interglacial has found refuge here,” he said
The researchers said they hope their findings convince the Tabasco and federal governments of the need to protect the ancient ecosystem
“The story of Pleistocene glacial cycles is written in the DNA of its plants waiting for scientists to decipher it
the San Pedro mangroves are warning us about the dramatic impact that climate change could have on the coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico if we do not take urgent action to stop the emission of greenhouse gases,” they said

This could well be Bollywood’s theme song because even a film named after a female protagonist and marketed by the female actor who we see emblazoned on every poster
needs to ultimately be propelled forward by a male actor
With the male actor emerging as the hero who saves the day finally
the said hero is the absolutely stunning Arjun Rampal – the vision of whom dulls the pain of knowing that Bollywood just doesn’t believe that a woman or women can carry a film on their shoulders
Amitabh Bachchan played The Great Male Hope in a film about women
it’s Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh
The only ties that bind the two are the fact that Vidya Balan and West Bengal play starring roles in both films
going by the cracker of a film that Kahaani had been with its nuanced screenplay
twists and turns and by the fact that it was a film resting firmly on Vidya Balan’s shoulders
Never had Kolkata held so much character and played such a key role in the storytelling since Mahanagar and Mani Ratnam’s Yuva
This time around instead of setting the film in Kolkata
Ghosh has moved out to the smaller towns near Kolkata
We go to the French outpost of Chandannagore with its quaint little boulevards and bridges
and then to hilly Kalimpong and finally stop by at dirty
The film begins with a harrowed and very frumpy Vidya Balan playing Vidya Sinha
going to work in what seems to be a government office and coordinating her nanny for her wheelchair-bound daughter
Mini has gone missing and Balan finds out that Balan supposedly called the nanny and asked her not to come home
Balan then receives a picture of Mini tied up and is informed by a male voice to come and meet the person if she wants to save Mini
only to get hit by a yellow Ambassador taxi
which lands her in the Chandannagore police station hospital
the most good looking cop to ever enter a police station or a home in Bengal
After this willing suspension of disbelief
Rampal takes a look at the comatose purple-faced Vidya Sinha and says “Durga”
You see Vidya Sinha is actually Durga Rani Singh
who was once married to Rampal’s Indrajit Singh
we are also informed that Durga Rani Singh is a wanted criminal for murder and kidnapping of a young girl
Rampal never mentions to the fact that he recognises Balan as his ex-wife to his seniors or to his wife
who he is shown as having an extremely equal and frank relationship with
No one knows that he was ever married before
the cops do not recognise Balan as Durga Rani Singh because she has an oxygen mask on her face
Rampal upon being called in for the hit-and-run case and upon recognising Balan as his ex-wife
then searches Balan’s house and finds a diary in which Balan has written her journey from Durga Rani Singh to Vidya Sinha down
And described how she has come to live with the girl called Mini
For the sake of not ruining the little sensible suspense in the film
where the characters are being introduced is frankly quite gripping
it’s the Intermission after which things fall apart
characters which seemed to be getting fleshed out properly lose their depth and nuance
There is no explanation for the motivations of any of the key characters
Plot twists and turns lose all semblance of logic
Jugal Hansraj may also have managed to land his most impressive acting role post-Masoom
As is Tota Roy Choudhury as Balan’s silent pining love interest
Embodying all that is wrong with Bengali men as paramours
What jars most is the way the subject of child sex abuse is tackled in the film
Please do not follow Balan’s character’s way of getting a child to admit that she is being abused
Do not sidle up to a child and mention how you an adult have been sexually abused
why is it that Hindi films feel it unnecessary to show what a person does as a profession
We have no clue what Vidya Sinha’s job is and how she makes money
Ghosh as usual gets his depiction of Bengalis spot on – from our diction to our mannerisms to our police stations and homes
There are poignant moments when we see ATMs which work and piles of Rs 500 notes
It reminds you of a simpler and better time
You do wish that Ghosh had thought through his plot twists and his character development – and that he had given us a female protagonist as the main character
Especially since Balan seems like a Bionic Woman who can run
scream and shout despite having just gotten out of a coma with a bleeding stomach wound and a purple bruise which seems to grow worse by the day
And watch the second half just to see Rampal take off his police vardi and flash us some fabulous pectorals
