the second-oldest monument in the Mexican state of Campeche
experienced a partial roof collapse on Sunday afternoon following years of unsuccessful requests for structural reinforcement
as the building was closed for maintenance during the incident
Witnesses described hearing an explosion before dust began billowing from the doors of the historic structure in central Calkiní
quickly responded to verify the building was empty
Parish priest Fernando Manzo disclosed that church officials had repeatedly sought assistance from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) to allocate resources for structural reinforcement
The collapse occurred while the centuries-old church was undergoing maintenance work
highlighting the urgency of the previously requested repairs
the Diocese of Campeche conveyed Manzo’s confirmation of the collapse and the absence of casualties
“The Parish will continue to pastorally care for its faithful in the spaces that are adapted for worship
which the parish priest will inform in due time of their location,” the statement read
which began construction in 1561 under the direction of Franciscan friars and was completed in 1776
represents a significant piece of Mexican religious heritage
the Franciscan friars initially established rudimentary structures upon their arrival in 1540 before commencing work on the permanent temple and convent
The building was later declared a national monument on April 4
and is registered in the Public Registry of Monuments and Archaeological and Historical Zones
Civil Protection authorities have cordoned off the entire area due to concerns about the building’s structural integrity following the collapse
The Diocese announced the immediate suspension of all religious activities at the site
with services and sacraments being relocated to alternative venues
including the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament
The parish has taken to social media to share images of the damage and inform parishioners about alternate arrangements for religious ceremonies
The incident has raised questions about the preservation of historical religious structures and the response to maintenance requests for these important cultural monuments
Local authorities continue to monitor the situation while maintaining the security perimeter around the damaged structure

Trains will begin running on the Maya Train railroad next month
but the entire project won’t be finished until the end of February 2024
After completing another weekend trip to inspect work on the ambitious infrastructure project
López Obrador said on social media that the stretch of the 1,554-kilometer-long railroad between Campeche city and Cancún
while the entire railroad and its 34 stations will be operational on Feb
The stretch between Campeche and Cancún includes part of Section 2 of the railroad (Escárcega-Calkiní) and the entirety of Section 3 (Calkiní-Izamal) and Section 4 (Izamal-Cancún)
Passengers seeking to travel from Mérida – the Yucatán Peninsula’s cultural capital – to the resort city of Cancún by train will be able to do so as of the middle of next month
The Cancún-Palenque stretch runs through Playa del Carmen
Tourists who fly into Cancún airport will be able to board trains at an airport station to travel south to beach destinations or west to the colonial cities of Valladolid and Izamal
The archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá and Cobá are also located along the stretch between Cancún and Mérida
López Obrador said that 29 “restored archaeological areas” and six “Maya Train” hotels will be accessible to passengers once the entirety of the railroad is operational at the end of February
In the same post, he said that Parque La Plancha
19 and that the new airport in Tulum will begin operations on Dec
has pursued an ambitious infrastructure agenda during his presidency
although it’s still not operating at full capacity over a year later
The government is also close to opening a modernized rail line across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec between Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec project – which also includes highway upgrades and the establishment of new industrial parks – is touted as an alternative to the Panama Canal
While López Obrador has championed all these infrastructure projects, and others, the one closest to his to his heart – perhaps partially because it runs through his home state of Tabasco – is the multi-billion-dollar Maya Train
The president asserts that the railroad will spur much-needed economic and social development in Mexico’s long-neglected southeast by opening up the entire region to tourism
he said on social media that 100,000 people were working on the Maya Train and Tulum airport projects
“Never had so many jobs been created in the southeast,” López Obrador wrote
The success of the Maya Train project appears to hinge
on convincing some of the millions of tourists who fly into Cancún airport on an annual basis to travel to inland destinations by rail rather than spending their entire vacation on the coast
which already serve the destinations through which the Maya Train will run
López Obrador said Monday that train tickets will go on sale Dec
1 and that trips on average will be 10% cheaper than those for buses
which say that the construction and operation of the railroad pose a threat to wildlife
There have also been doubts about whether the railroad – along which tourist
commuter and freight trains are slated to run – would actually be ready to begin operations in 2023
the government – and especially López Obrador – has remained adamant that trains will begin running this year
at least according to the president’s timetable

A consortium controlled by billionaire businessman Carlos Slim has secured the second contract awarded by the federal government for the construction of the US $8-billion Maya Train railroad project in Mexico’s southeast
The National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur)
announced on Thursday that Slim’s company Cicsa and Spanish construction firm FCC – of which the Mexican magnate is the largest shareholder – were successful with their bid to build the 222-kilometer section of the railroad between Escárcega and Calkiní in Campeche
The consortium submitted an 18.55-billion peso (US $752.8-million) bid for the contract
which Fonatur administration and finance director Arturo Ávalos said was the best among 15 proposals
The companies’ proposal received an overall rating of 94.06 out of 100 – 45.13 for the technical proposal and 48.93 for the financial one
Fonatur said that Cisca and FCC will begin construction on May 12 pending approval from the Health Ministry. That would appear to be a formality given that Fonatur chief Rogelio Jiménez Pons said last month that President López Obrador had ordered the continuation of the Maya Train project despite the worsening coronavirus pandemic
The awarding of the contract to the Slim-led consortium came a week after Fonatur announced that a consortium led by Portugal’s Mota-Engil and the majority state-owned China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) had won the contract to build the first section of track between Palenque
The consortium presented a 15.5-billion peso bid for the 227-kilometer section
Fonatur said that it would be responsible for drawing up the master plan for the project
building the tracks and purchasing all required materials
The CCCC has faced corruption charges and was blacklisted by the World Bank in 2011 for fraudulent practices related to a highway project in the Philippines but Fonatur said that the proposal it presented along with Mota-Engil and three other companies was the best in terms of both cost and quality
The United Nations Office for Project Services reviewed all 14 bids for the Palenque-Escárcega section and agreed that the Portuguese/Chinese bid was the best
Slim’s Cicsa/FCC consortium has also submitted one of 16 bids to Fonatur to build the third section of the Maya Train between Calkiní and Izamal
Fonatur is due to announce the winner of that contract on May 15

Grupo Carso and FCC Construcción won the tender to build Section 2 of the Maya Train
The National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur) awarded the consortium made up of Cicsa and FCC a contract for the Supply of materials and construction of the platform and track of the Maya Train
corresponding to the Escárcega-Calkiní section
2 million pesos for 5 years of maintenance and 16% VAT
CICSA participates with 50% and FCC with 50 percent
The start of the work is subject to the signing of the respective contract
Section 2 of the Mayan Train route covers 235 km
going from Escárcega to Calkiní in the state of Campeche
«The priority projects of the Government of Mexico will continue as measures to mitigate the economic consequences of COVID-19
the Maya Train is established as one of the most important infrastructure works and a key trigger for employment and development in the south-southeast of Mexico
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) carried out an independent analysis – and in parallel – to the proposal review process carried out by Fonatur
and expressed its agreement according to international standards
Fonatur said that the offer made by this consortium meets the formal and eligibility criteria established in the tender specifications
it complies with the legal and administrative requirements
this consortium ranked as the best technical offer in the areas: quality of work
fulfillment of contracts and national content and labor
