The decision was not financially motivated
chief executive officer of St Luke's Combined Hospices
she explained that St Luke’s prioritised expanding community-based palliative care to meet growing demand
This approach supports 625 patients rather than focusing on a smaller group at the in-patient unit
they weren’t the primary reason for the facility’s closure," Mahilall said
She noted that while the non-profit was not well funded by the government
Mahilall explained the shift in the organisation's business model and services will continue to include day hospice and home-based care but will no longer provide private accommodation for those in the final stages of life
"We had to weigh the odds of caring for a small group of people as opposed to the exponentially growing needs for palliative-care services especially out in the community and at home."
the final intake of patients to the Kenilworth in-patient unit were admitted on Wednesday
They were referred to alternative end-of-life care facilities
such as Living Hope in Fish Hoek and Abundant Life in the Southern Suburbs
Clinical staff from the in-patient facility have
been redeployed to support the community-based care team
spiritual care workers and bereavement counsellors
the team will not interrupt their service offering to the broader community
and 625 patients receiving home-based care will receive the same standard of care to which they are accustomed," Mahilall said
and operational staff will continue working from the iconic Kenilworth building
previously reserved for the in-patient facility

After a multi-year review, Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis has received verification as a Level III trauma center. The official designation, expected in January, means the hospital met the requirements set forth by the American College of Surgeons
The designation will help all of Cape Cod, but especially the mid-Cape and Outer Cape towns, Sandwich Fire Chief John Burke said on a call Dec
There are three levels of trauma center verification
according to the American College of Surgeons
Each level is defined by specific standards about the available level of care for patients
Level I centers must be able to provide comprehensive care for all trauma injuries
A Level III Trauma Center must be equipped to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, critical care, surgery and stabilization for moderately injured patients, according to the American Trauma Society
Cape Cod Hospital must provide 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians
anesthesiologists and operating room staff must be available within 30 minutes of notification
The designation is important for the outermost Cape Cod towns
"especially with the accidents in the summer on Route 6," Burke said
If a medical evacuation helicopter is not flying to those towns on a given day
then patients can be taken to a Level III trauma center for stabilization

head of department for palliative care at St Luke's
said the last patient was discharged on Wednesday December 18
St Luke’s Hospice will no longer run an in-patient service at its Kenilworth facility
announced that it will close its service on Tuesday December 31 to focus on enhancing community and home-based palliative care
head of department for palliative care at St Luke's explained that the decision was based on “strengthening the community home-based care component” as they care for more than 600 patients in the community on any given day with an average of about three patients accessing the in-patient unit
St Luke’s provides specialised end-of-life medical and nursing care
The admission of patients was reduced during December
with the last patient having been discharged last Wednesday
Their day hospice programme will also be strengthened
enabling their interdisciplinary team to be available to
and offer the same level of care to a greater cohort of patients
“This also gives the patients the opportunity to die at home with the comfort and support of our team and the family
It’s definitely not a primary financial decision but rather to continue with a more strengthened community care service,” she said
St Luke’s render their services at no cost unless the patient has medical aid funds that make provision for the care by their hospice
The five staff in their in-patient unit who have been directly affected have been re-absorbed into their community-based home-care work
“Those who cannot be accommodated - the carers with palliative care skills - our CEO has reached out to other NGOs in the broader Western Cape where there was a favourable response for the CVs to be forwarded should there be vacancies – however the normal recruitment process will follow – they will be favourably considered,” she said
The in-patient unit facility will be opened to anyone in the community who would want to utilise it
or private hospital facility based on its design
It could also be repurposed for corporates as an office facility – it’s a space owned by St Luke's and has its own entrance and parking space that can easily be separated from their admin or office section
Ms Petersen-Damon said if there is a requirement for any other admission to an in-patient facility
the Department of Health supported facilities include Living Hope Community Health Centre

DARTMOUTH — Dartmouth lost a very special resident last week
and now the school community is coming together to honor her legacy
Deidra Ann Tavares, 21, died unexpectedly on Jan. 26 at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford
she fell in love with you," said Suzanne (Tavares) Pacheco
A child at heart, as described in her obituary
Disney princesses and anything that was colored pink
Pacheco said her daughter would have painted the world pink if she could
Tavares was born with 1p36 deletion syndrome
where the outermost band on the short arm (p) of chromosome 1 is deleted
It can be characterized by moderate to severe intellectual disability
limited speech ability and distinct facial features
Her mother said she waved to anyone on the streets whether she knew them or not
"It was like walking with the mayor," Pacheco said
some of which categorized her as symptomatic for COVID-19
It was determined that one of her lungs was filled more than halfway with fluid
Tavares remained happy and was excited to ride in the ambulance
X-rays and CT scans were performed for further evaluation
Doctors tried to revive her as she experienced three cardiac arrests in the process
"We thought we'd be at the hospital for two to three days
We thought it was just a routine doctor's appointment."
Tavares' passing is not to be forgotten, but her legacy she left behind in the Dartmouth Public Schools system lives on
Her kindness has spread throughout the school
even touching those in her elementary school all these years later
a Dartmouth High School Promoting Academics and Life Skills (PALS) Program Teacher
reminded students and staff to wear pink in honor of Tavares on Feb
but with remote learning due to inclement weather conditions
the official plan has been moved to her birthday next week on Feb
although some still wore pink during remote sessions
students and staff who have worked closely with Tavares over the years will plant and maintain a butterfly garden outside the classroom in the spring to "continue to honor her beautiful spirit." Pacheco said it's as if her daughter is still reaching her through these small reminders
She said even the children who didn't know her will know her from these small acts of kindness and honor
"Deidra will be dearly missed but we will continue to remember her in the beauty of the butterflies we will soon see right outside our classroom window," Kour-Pierpont wrote in an email
Pacheco said she loves DPS because they have always treated special needs children as children
Gelinas was determined to remain working with Tavares and fought to be her one-on-one once back in the district
Gelinas said Tavares was going to be her last child
Pacheco described her as "another grandmother
she was the 'me' when I couldn't be there in school with her." Pacheco said she always felt her daughter was truly safe and cared for at school
Gelinas still brought her birthday presents every day
when Pacheco called to break the news to her
Gelinas was just about to purchase her gift
She is survived by her siblings Adriana Tavares
Tavares' passing has taken a toll on the family but brought them closer together
the family watched her favorite Disney movie
"Brave," as Tavares admired the protagonist Merida
Tavares shared the same characteristics; when asked if she would ever get married
I don't want to cook." Tavares was laid to rest in her Merida gown
and Deidra had a huge village," Pacheco said
"She really did touch every school in Dartmouth in a way."
Tavares' 22nd birthday would have been on Feb. 9. Flowers and donations to the 1p36 Deletion Support and Awareness organization are welcome

TRURO — A man accused of killing his mother Friday and setting her body on fire died on Sunday
according to a press release from Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe Monday
was found dead in his cell at the Ash Street Jail in New Bedford
which is part of the Bristol County House of Correction System
he had clogged his airways with wet toilet paper and "suffered a medical emergency," a spokesperson from the Bristol County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Monday
State police detectives are investigating Howe's death
Earlier: Body found on fire outside Truro home, and suspect arrested. What we know
That family has been through a lot this weekend; please keep them in your prayers," said a spokesperson for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office
Request for a well-being check and report of a fireHowe was arrested after emergency personnel responded to his mother's home in Truro around 9:30 p.m
according to a press release on Saturday from the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office. The emergency workers had been called to the property because of both a request for a well-being check and a report of a fire.
"A family member had called and asked to check on the residence," said Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore in a phone interview.
Twenty year later: 20 years later: The twists, turns and tragedies of the Christa Worthington murder case
First responders arrived to see a man and a fire on the front lawn
The man ran inside the home and locked himself in
The Cape Cod Regional SWAT team was able to enter the home and arrest Adam Howe
who was — with the arrest — facing a charge of murder
was the president of the Truro Historical Society and the chair of the town Commission on Disabilities
Adam Howe had difficulty breathing and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital
He was examined and then shackled to a gurney and watched by hospital personnel "with eyes on him at all times," according to the release
State police and hospital security personnel were also in the room
"The hospital wanted to have him discharged as soon as practical and efforts were made to contact a secure facility to take him," O'Keefe said in the Monday release
After listening to the physician and to the district attorney
the judge issued an order for Adam Howe to be involuntarily committed citing a part of state law known as Section 12
O'Keefe then contacted Bridgewater State Hospital to inform them about the judge's order
Howe saying they didn't take Section 12 commitments" and only take someone committed under Section 18.
State police began contacting jails to see who would take him
Adam Howe was then discharged from Cape Cod Hospital and transported to the jail
He was accompanied with his discharge summary from Cape Cod Hospital and a police report about his mother's death
according to the press release from O'Keefe.
supervisors placed Howe on a security watch where a corrections officer "would visually check on him every 15 minutes," according to the Bristol County Sheriff's Office statement Monday
He was also clothed in a nylon rip-resistant smock
time and passion to our organization,” the Truro Historical Society Board of Directors said in press release Saturday
and was totally committed to preserving our history and culture and the well-being of her beloved town."
Susan Howe was committed to the community and besides the historical society
she was involved in the town Community Preservation Committee and a planning committee for the town-owned Walsh property
according to the historical society release
“Susan was a bright light in our organization and in our town. She was loved by so many of us
The Truro Select Board released a joint statement on the town's Facebook page Saturday afternoon about the incident
"Our hearts are heavy with the news that we have lost a beloved member of our community
Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends at this time of tragic loss
We are following the lead of law enforcement as they investigate this tragedy and have no further comment at this time."
