Known as el Dia de la Virgen Guadalupe, it is a popular feast day that celebrates the Virgin of Guadalupe: a brown-skinned, Indigenous vision of Mary that Catholics believe appeared to a peasant in 1531 After her fourth and final apparition to Diego Catholics believe that her image imprinted onto his cactus-fiber robe As a scholar of Catholicism, I have long been fascinated by the adoration of the Virgin Mary. Often seen as a symbol of inclusive love, the Virgin of Guadalupe has become especially beloved by migrants and Latinos in the U.S. Over the past 20 years, research on Guadalupe has brought me to deeply moving shrines in her honor in the United States: candle-filled from Catholic parishes to family homes and yards According to the original story of Guadalupe the Virgin provided Juan Diego with Spanish roses – a type not grown in Mexico – to convince Archbishop Juan de Zumárraga that the apparitions were real and the transformation of Juan Diego’s humble cloak into a holy relic he declared the apparitions miraculous and built a chapel to honor la Virgen The original chapel, the Capilla de Indios where Juan Diego lived for the rest of his life the Old Basilica – built to honor la Virgen – and the modern one where the famous cloak has hung since 1976 Millions of people – Catholic and non-Catholic, Latino and non-Latino – have made pilgrimages to the shrine to pray to give thanks and to pay respects to this Indigenous manifestation of the Virgin Affectionately called “la Virgencita,” she is depicted as a symbol of motherhood While some scholars question the historical veracity of the Nican Mopohua, the Catholic Church has approved the story of the apparitions. Pope John Paul II named the Virgin of Guadalupe “Patroness of the Americas” and “Star of the New Evangelization” in 1999 indicating her central role in spreading Catholic Christianity in the Americas In 2002, John Paul II canonized Juan Diego as the first Indigenous North American Catholic saint The official sanctioning of the apparitions certainly has contributed to Guadalupe’s popularity Yet it is her humble origins and relatability that have made adoration for the Virgin endure Specifically, it is la Virgencita’s Indigenous origins – a “morena,” as Spanish speakers refer to a woman with dark hair and dark skin Unlike other famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary most of which describe her as looking white and European la Virgen represents Meso-Americans’ rich heritage recognizing the dignity of non-European cultures Today, the special connection between Latinos and Guadalupe taps into the vexed, violent history of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. A colonized people, many Mexicans have long rallied around la Virgen in times of distress and need, and her image has been a unifying symbol during wars and revolutions Father Miguel Hidalgo, a leader of the 1810 Mexican War of Independence, paraded banners with la Virgen’s image. So did the revolutionary Emiliano Zapata and his band of reformers during the 1910 Mexican Revolution And among many Latinos, whether practicing Catholics or not, she is believed to be a mother who loves her children, no matter what: a woman who stands by them whether they are poor A large statue of la Virgen is carried through the streets, and “los Matachines” dancers wear gorgeous Indigenous garb as they honor her you will find a communitywide celebration of Guadalupe Painted murals of Guadalupe brighten concrete and stuccoed buildings across the U.S., and little home shrines called “altarcitos” feature small statues of la Virgen along with candles and photographs of family members la Guadalupe is a powerful master symbol of a woman who gives hope love and assurance – especially to those who feel marginalized or oppressed A mural at Sunnyside High School, 1725 E. wasn’t a church-going man but he was a very religious man and was brought up Catholic,” says Lance Laber the executive director of the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun “The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is just very special to Catholics of the Southwest and of Mexico.” The feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec 12 celebrates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego an indigenous peasant newly converted to Christianity she is believed to have appeared to him and expressed her desire for the construction of a church on Tepeyac Hill in the area of modern-day Mexico City the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun hosts a festival each year in her honor Laber calls her “an icon of the Southwest.” Our Lady of Guadalupe appears throughout Tucson — in churches such as Mission San Xavier del Bac at the base of Tumamoc Hill and on a mural in the Menlo Park neighborhood shows up on candles and clothing and in places of personal devotion This dark-skinned Lady has been called empress patroness and mother of Mexico and the Americas it is what would be considered a regional devotion,” said Monsignor Raúl Trevizo “She spoke to the reality of the people of Latin America and the Southwest.” devotion to the Virgin has been passed down through the generations Even those who don’t know the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe relate to her as an intercessor and you know she will take care of your prayers before God because she has a privileged place before God,” Trevizo says who moved to the United States from Mexico in the 1940s the family had an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in their home they thanked her for the blessings their family received “We have been blessed to have no major problems,” Mancha says because her example was to be praying the rosary and praying to her and she had so much devotion that she died on Dec Mancha says one of her sisters found their mother on her deathbed with her rosary “We turn to (the Virgin) and ask her for guidance and I believe that is the reason why everyone in our family has achieved so much,” says Mancha who is the costume chairman for the Tucson Desert Harmony Chorus “My father was educated to the fifth grade and migrated in the ’40s traces her current devotion to family tradition She remembers the vigils the night before the Dec People visited the family’s home in Klondyke and the flowers decorated Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image a sister of the Dominican Sisters of Peace lives in a home called Casa Guadalupe — named such by her religious order Images of the Virgin fill the home she shares with Sister Corina Padilla When Calderon runs Bible studies in prisons inmates sometimes give her drawings of Our Lady the father of one of those men built the small shrine that now protects a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in front of the sisters’ home When the man’s son was released from prison the son returned to repaint the weathered statue for the sisters so the Mexican people have a really deep devotion to her,” Calderon says The traditions revolving around Our Lady of Guadalupe are both personal and ecclesiastical families might gather at home and in churches to pray the rosary and wait for dawn they would sing to Our Lady of Guadalupe what we call ‘Las Mañanitas,’ ” Trevizo says “It’s a Mexican song and a festive song in which you greet people while celebrating their birthdays.” for ‘Mañanitas’ (in church),” Trevizo says the parishes celebrate a Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe Other traditions include dramatizations of her appearance to Juan Diego and prayer gatherings and processions in the nine days leading up to the feast day and it recalls the nine months that the Virgin Mary was pregnant with the child Jesus,” Trevizo says even some without Catholic backgrounds identify with the Our Lady of Guadalupe “It’s an image that people understand beyond the sense of their religion and they understand it from an archetypal human point of view of motherhood and protection,” says Susan Gamble a practicing Episcopalian and owner of Santa Theresa Tile Works Gamble considers herself a “border dweller,” and she and the other artists at Santa Theresa Tile Works often draw on the region to inspire their work Tile Works artist Kristine Stoner created one of Gamble’s favorite depictions of Our Lady of Guadalupe as a commission for the Pio Decimo Center “I can imagine every young mother alive right now “And the grace and dignity that she had — people can aspire to have that much love.” Gamble sees her as both a religious and cultural symbol “That’s where I find her as an inspiration,” she says “Be it a literal story or a non-literal story The point is that she is woven into our fabric.” Contact reporter Johanna Willett at 573-4357 or jwillett@tucson.com What: The DeGrazia Gallery in Connection to Roots on Display in El Centro Chapel As if Simón Silva’s entire breadth of human experience was laid bare on the canvas the pieces he painted for an El Centro Catholic chapel tell his story from the fields to famous artist in a 2015 commissioned piece titled “Cristo Rey de los Campos,” or “Christ King of the Fields,” and later in the 14 Stations of the Cross in individual portraits around a similar theme Silva shared visually his journey from migrant farmworker “His story is highly compelling … of someone who has benefitted from richness of that whole experience but also the hurt and pain that came with it,” explained Father Mark Edney of Silva’s upbringing in Holtville as a migrant farmworker traveling the state with his parents and many siblings “Particularly with ‘Cristo Rey de los Campos,’ it beautifully represents the dignity of that labor,” said Edney who is in his ninth year with El Centro Catholic and is dean of the Imperial Valley Catholic Diocese which ministers to a combined 4,000 parishioners between Our Lady of Guadalupe parish on the East Side and St Edney reflected on Silva’s contributions to the spiritual life of his parishioners on Tuesday May 4 in the afterglow of the news that Silva who now lives in Los Angeles but has family still in Holtville was honored with a 2021 Latino Spirit Award for “Achievement in the Arts” by the California Latino Legislative Caucus on Monday Silva could not be reached for comment by publication stated he was proud to congratulate Imperial Valley’s native son for receiving the award “I am incredibly proud to recognize the achievements of Simón Silva whose artwork is deeply rooted by his experience growing up in Imperial Valley Simón Silva has used his mastery of visual arts to celebrate our vibrant immigrant culture and educate others with vivid stories of farmworker families,” Garcia said Silva emigrated to the Imperial Valley with his parents and siblings He rose to prominence as one of the foremost Latino artists with his vivid depictions of Mexican and Mexican-American life many reminiscent of the bold strokes and use of color of famed Mexican painter Diego Rivera have served as the focal point to many public spaces dear to Imperial Valley residents’ hearts especially as the key image of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish’s Capilla de Cristo Rey which has become the center of religious life for the 2,200-strong parish With a main sanctuary that only holds 300 people Our Lady was accustomed to holding Mass and other services in the parish hall in the parking lot of the East Orange Avenue campus ground was broken on converting the hall into a full chapel that is rated for a capacity of 750 although Edney said it is capable of holding more As part of that conversion and to honor the mostly Latino and largely Spanish-speaking flock a painting was commissioned that would ultimately be used as the backdrop to the altar on which Mass is said Edney said the painting was delivered by Silva first then Edney had a company in San Diego professionally reproduce it to fit onto the wall of the chapel Silva again used his copious talents to produce a farmworker-themed Stations of the Cross the 14-paneled series of pictures or carvings representing the successive incidents during Jesus Christ’s progress from his condemnation by Pilate to his crucifixion and burial The 14 canvasses took Silva between 2016 and 2019 The images have proven popular as they continue to be a fundraising tool for the church where people can purchase high-quality prints or framed prints of each or all of the Stations plus “Cristo Rey de los Campos.” Edney called Silva’s art an outcropping of an “authentic human experience,” referring to the hard labor of toiling in the fields beside his family The priest said he shared photos of “Cristo Rey de los Campos” with a friend from San Diego “that’s my mama,” informing Edney that her mother was also a migrant farmworker having a fondness for the warm hues the painter frequently revisits: oranges Although it’s debatable whether Silva paints with the frequency he once did at his prime art is still his central focus as he has dabbled in writing teaching and now travels the country lecturing on how to “Cultivate a Creative Mind,” his series of workshops and keynotes that inspire others to “overcome their obstacles which (Silva discovered firsthand) is their greatest asset and regain their creative confidence,” according to Assembly member Garcia’s announcement of Silva’s award His selection for a Latino Spirit Award is very much rooted in that multi-media approach to art Edney calls Silva a “Renaissance man,” who “comes from a very humble background; he’s a huge success as a human person and also as an artist.” Graduating from Imperial Valley College with an associate’s degree in art he went on to earn a Bachelor in Fine Arts in illustration from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena Silva’s work was chosen to represent the United States in the Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibit at Los Angeles City Hall he had a one-man exhibit at University of California as part of the “Raza Art Series” and that same year was commissioned to do a portrait for the cover of Time magazine The Latino Spirit Awards were established in 2002 at the Capitol in Sacramento to coincide with California’s acknowledgment of Cinco de Mayo and to highlight positive role models in Latino community the California Latino Legislative Caucus honors Latinos and Latinas in various categories that range from athletics to public service and human rights the Latino Spirit Awards allows us to spotlight the achievements of Latinos in various industries who have emerged as changemakers or role models in California.” Assembly member Garcia stated in his press release “I have been hoping to have my Latino Caucus colleagues award Simón Silva for some time and I am grateful for this opportunity to honor one of our own Imperial Valley heroes.” For advertising and submission of legal notices or inquiries email: info@calexicochronicle.com Connect with our staff on topics that matter to you via email or the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and her visits to St a parishioner dressed as Juan Diego and cradling a bouquet of roses in his tilma (cloak) who then walked to the shrine and placed the roses at first met Kenneth when he joined my Challenger club, Challengers Unlimited, at the end of 2015 I immediately realized that Kenneth and I had a lot in common when I examined his car for the first time at a club event as his car and mine were identical in model year and nearly so regarding colors and options Kenneth Muñoz and his 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 doing their thing at the strip Our similarities diverged when it came to our cars’ intended purpose I wanted to create a sleeper by limiting my modifications to things under hood Kenneth’s backstory reads like an American dream story California and was one of six children of immigrant parents who both hailed from Capilla de Guadalupe “My grandmother on my father’s side was born in San Jose he grew up in Mexico and then came here in the 1970s,” Kenneth says There were eight of us living in a two bedroom apartment in Inglewood which wasn’t the best neighborhood in the world.” Kenneth (in yellow shirt) and his parents and siblings in the early 1980s Kenneth’s father embraced the entrepreneurial spirit in America and did whatever he could ranging from washing dishes at a hotel restaurant and selling popcorn in movie theaters to transporting pencils and erasers from the U.S Kenneth’s father and four of his brothers began investing in apartment buildings in their neighborhood They invested some earnings which led to Kenneth’s family opening a trio of Mexican restaurants called La Capilla These successes enabled the family to move to Anaheim Hills Kenneth caught the automotive bug in a big way “I’ve always loved cars as long as I can remember modify the engine and suspension to make them go faster and I would race the other kids in the neighborhood.” Kenneth shared he also learned a lot about cars from his dad and his uncle as they would work on their matching ’65 Impalas in the driveway Kenneth says he made “the dumbest move” of his entire life “My dad gave me a choice between two cars: my brother’s hand-me-down Toyota pickup and a 1979 6.6-liter Bandit Trans Am The Trans Am was black and gold with T-tops just like in the movie “Kids would raise them or lower them and do all kinds of cool mods my dad taunts me about passing up that Trans Am He sold it to the gardener who still owns it to this day.” Kenneth put an air suspension system in the Toyota and a top-notch sound system The 6-cylinder Camaro that Kenneth turned into a potent racer with the aid of nitrous Kenneth’s love for muscle cars developed a few years later in the nineties He had fallen in love with the contemporary Chevy Camaro SS and test-drove one with his dad who balked on buying it owing to the car’s power and speed “It had that paint that changed color from blue to purple under different light I turned it into a fast car,” remembers Kenneth but Kenneth’s first real muscle car didn’t come until 2011 “I had seen the new Challenger on the road for a few years and liked the body style When the SRT8 392 was released in 2011 I knew I had to have one,” Kenneth said “I went online and saw a black one with silver stripes and said ‘that’s it.’ I went to Orange Coast Dodge in Costa Mesa and saw that exact match being brought in on a transporter The car Kenneth bought was a 2012 Challenger SRT8 392 with a five-speed automatic Kenneth didn’t initially have a plan for modifying the car and had bought an extended warranty. “Once I started seeing all the amazing parts you could get, I called and canceled that warranty. I knew what I was gonna wouldn’t be covered,” Kenneth says with a laugh. Shortly after, Kenneth made contact with someone who worked at Hennessey Performance (HPE). Kenneth’s 2012 Challenger STR8 392 after the Hennessey build none of the aftermarket manufacturers had released a supercharger kit for the 392 as the cars’ PCM was encrypted from the factory and hadn’t been cracked yet Kenneth’s friend had been informed that the crack was coming and that Hennessey was looking for a car to use as a test mule “It’s where the madness all started,” jokes Kenneth A 2.3-liter Magnuson TVS2300 supercharger was installed along with an HPE cold air induction kit a high flow fuel injector upgrade and performance fuel pump stainless steel long tube headers with high flow catalytic converters along with various Hennessey branded aesthetic add-ons the car put out 560 horsepower at the rear wheels a somewhat conservative bump considering a stock 392 could put down 430 hp the car is registered as the number one Hennessey Challenger SRT8 392 Kenneth was initially pleased with the upgrade but soon found himself wanting more I just felt that it wasn’t enough,” he recalls Adam Montague at Spankin’ Time Motorsports Kenneth consulted Adam Montague at Spankin’ Time who suggested there was a whole lot more performance that could be had from the car Adam proposed a laundry list of modifications returned the car with the existing Hennessey set-up but bumped the yield up to 680 horsepower at the rear Kenneth was duly impressed and gave Adam the green light for a build Ken also added a Corsa Sport exhaust and 22-inch Vossen wheels Kenneth drove the car in this configuration for the better part of a year He began racing it at local dragstrips and refined his driving technique the mod bug and my power addiction came back in full force Kenneth’s predicament came after consulting Adam Montague again for more power Adam told him that to achieve a satisfyingly higher output it would require removing a lot of hardware from the initial Hennessy build I knew I wanted even more power than I had,” says Kenneth I had spent a good deal of money on the Hennessy build and wasn’t happy about getting rid of all that relatively new hardware.” He added that he also had issues with diluting the provenance of the number one Hennessey Challenger 392 debating the pros and cons of each side of the equation but decided that more power is what he wanted most Kenneth’s Challenger went to Spankin’ Time MotorSports in San Bernardino where a Kenne-Bell supercharger and a host of engine systems were installed Kenneth’s car went back to Spankin’ Time The Magnussen was replaced by a 4.2-liter Kenne-Bell screw a custom pulley and belt system designed by Montague an SHR Viking Nag-1 5-speed automatic transmission and a two-piece aluminum driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop Kenneth went back to the OEM SRT aluminum wheels as the Vossens were more for show than go at this level The PCM was returned and the dyno rated the power output at 1016 horsepower on E85 fuel Kenneth’s Challenger tearing up the strip at Kenneth qualified for his NHRA license at Fontana and raced the car at several drag strips in the Southern California area His best quarter mile time was 9.8-seconds He had decided to go beyond street legal with his Challenger and go full-on race car Spankin’ Time swapped out the factory 392 block for a 6.2-liter Hellcat Hemi New parts included a 4.9-Liter Kenne Bell supercharger with a new intercooler a DJ Safety parachute system and Weld Beadlock wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson 275/60 R15 rears and M&H 4.50/28.0-17 front tires Kenneth and the Spankin’ Time crew are hoping for 1250 horsepower and low nine second quarter miles out of the latest build though Adam Montague is shooting for roughly 1250 horsepower utilizing E93 fuel Kenneth is hoping to achieve low nine-second runs he is thinking of adding a fire system and a nitrous system Kenneth is sponsored by Jose Cuervo 1800 Tequilla DJ Safety and his family’s La Capilla Mexican restaurants his list of sponsors will include Jose Cuervo 1800 Tequilla When asked what he has come away with from this odyssey weighing the pros and cons of various manufacturers and so forth his answer is more grounded and heartwarming Kenneth’s son goes to all the tracks with his dad my dad used to take me for rides in a ’79 Corvette that he had He won’t let me take ‘The Black Car’ without him and he gets some seat time with me in the parking lot It’s like watching me with my dad all those years ago It’s all about family for me.” Kenneth and his car can be viewed on Instagram at Kenneth_Munoz1 Build your own custom newsletter with the content you love from Street Muscle We will safeguard your e-mail and only send content you request We'll send you the most interesting Street Muscle articles We promise not to use your email address for anything but exclusive updates from the Power Automedia Network The web server reported a bad gateway error Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application Maria Rosalia Centeno - Desafortunadamente, a la altura del paraje “Capilla de Guadalupe” y la “Curva del Ahorcado” de la ranchería “Pala”, el chofer de la unidad se quedó sin frenos y cayó a un barranco de más de 200 metros de profundidad, lo que provocó que al menos 16 personas resultaran lesionadas. La mayoría de los lesionados fueron trasladados a hospitales de Tehuacán y Ajalpan. fascinating back stories and an absolute wealth of sites to choose from you’ll never be short of Catholic locations the north of Mexico City It ranks as the most visited Catholic destination in Latin America and numbers indicate that it is also the world’s top Catholic pilgrimage site Over 20 million visitors flock there annually to see the site upon which the Virgen de Guadalupe supposedly appeared to San Juan Diego © David Crossland / Alamy Stock Photo Possibly Mexico City’s second most recognised Catholic landmark is the largest and oldest cathedral in the Americas; the Catedral Metropolitana and situated right on top of one such ruin just off the zócalo legend has it that this magnificent and dazzling cathedral boasts a series of underground catacombs which lead to the Templo Mayor What isfor certain though is that it – like all of Mexico City – is rapidly sinking into the ground import was part of the Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe — one year after a previous ELCA bishop removed their pastor One thing that has become important to me during this whole saga is trying to learn the language of this community Nelson and the Latino bishops who coached me in the translation and pronunciation You can watch the whole service here.  The prayers begin at minute mark 1:13:30.  You can read about the service here we praise you for your faithfulness to those in our history who have struggled for justice and whose stories inspire us to practice hope in the face of despair For our brother Joseph who was attacked and sold into slavery by his own kin and ability to forgive model for us a way to move forward who was filled with your grace and whose song of justice causes the proud to tremble and the rich to shudder as they realize your power on behalf of the lowly and oppressed May her Spirit-inspired song fill our lungs and the sanctuary of your earth with the proclamation of restoration For our brother Juan Diego who stood at that holy place of Tepeyac Hill and received the Blessed Virgin’s message that he and his Aztec people were seen all who walk through desolate and dangerous places searching for safety and all who have been dismissed and disrespected by the church may the story of those flowers blooming in the desert sustain and strengthen them to fight for their dignity who persisted in his struggle against a religious power structure that choked the faith of the people and cared more about its own privilege and wealth than about the gospel of Jesus Christ turn us away from the idolatry of corporate power and actions toward repentance and restoration for the congregation of Iglesia Luterana Santa María Peregrina For their persistence like the widow against the unjust judge For their courage like Daniel in the lion’s den For their patience like the Israelites in exile and their wisdom as they continue in their pilgrimage accompanied by the Blessed Mother Mary For those who have kept silence out of fear Continue to surround them with supportive family and colleagues who will accompany them in their time of recovery and reparations to them and their congregation Bless them with renewed energy for ministry and shine your light of love into their lives Holy Jesus in your mercy (hear our prayer) te alabamos por tu fidelidad a aquellos en nuestra historia que han luchado por la justicia y cuyas historias nos inspiran a practicar la esperanza frente a la angustia que fue atacado y vendido como esclavo por sus propios parientes que sufrieron falsas acusaciones y que padecieron en prisión visión y capacidad de perdonar nos modelen una manera de seguir adelante Dios de reconciliación (escucha nuestra oración) que fue llena de tu gracia y cuyo canto de justicia hace temblar a los orgullosos y los ricos para estremecerse al darse cuenta de tu poder en nombre de los humildes y oprimidos Que su canción inspirada por el Espíritu llene nuestros pulmones nuestras voces y el santuario de tu tierra con la proclamación de restauración Espíritu de resistencia (escucha nuestra oración) Para nuestro hermano Juan Diego que estuvo en ese lugar sagrado del Cerro del Tepeyac y recibió el mensaje de la Santísima Virgen de que él y su pueblo azteca fueron vistos su tierra hecha sagrada y su liderazgo validado todos los que caminan por lugares desolados y peligrosos en busca de seguridad y todos los que han sido despedidos y faltados al respeto por la iglesia que la historia de esas flores que florecen en el desierto los sostenga y fortalezca para luchar por su dignidad Dios de reparaciones (escucha nuestra oración) que persistió en su lucha contra una estructura de poder religioso que ahogaba la fe del pueblo y se preocupaba más por su propio privilegio y riqueza que por el evangelio de Jesucristo alejarnos de la idolatría del poder corporativo mentes y acciones hacia el arrepentimiento y la restauración Jesús nuestro salvador (escucha nuestra oración) por la congregación de la Iglesia Luterana Santa María Peregrina Por su persistencia como la viuda contra el juez injusto Por su valentía como Daniel en el foso de
