Carmen (Maya Lahyani) is surrounded by fellow "bandits" in the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra's production of "Carmen."
right) confronts Micaela (Cecilia Violetta Lopez) and Don Jose (John Riesen) in the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra production of "Carmen."
There was plenty to admire about the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra’s production of “Carmen” Sunday night
Cecilia Violetta Lopez’s work as the innocent maiden Micaela was the standout
Opening the opera as a courier for Don Jose’s mother
she seemed like the perfect match for the military man
she got another shot at happiness and an aria that was breathtaking
A brief encounter with the vampish Carmen (a powerful Maya Lahyani) was enough to turn Don Jose’s head and seal a relationship
Carmen had someone else to distract – the toreador Escamillo (Donovan Singletary)
who had the fan base of a rock star (even wearing a white fur on one entrance)
Don Jose abandoned his military career and agreed to join Carmen and a group of bandits
stage director Robert Neu dropped visual references to everything from “Rent” to “Evita.” He didn’t specify where or when it takes place
but its costumes were definitely contemporary
That made the French lyrics and Spanish trappings difficult to peg
the production gave Georges Bizet’s familiar themes new relevance
Adding to the refresh: Yana Biryukova’s projections
they helped set the scene and underscore important moments
When Carmen and a pair of bandits consulted their cards
Throughout the three-hour performance musicians were able to grab their own moments
an upstage choir and four dancers augmented scenes
particularly when she faced her final encounter with Don Jose
While the lovers’ fate was written in the cards
it was difficult not to feel their Shakespearean ends
Music Director/Conductor Ryan Haskins once again proved varied musical offerings are good for the symphony crowd
While Sunday’s performance should have started earlier (it made for a long Sunday night)
it was great to sample something new and anticipate what might lie ahead

The director of Arizona’s embattled Medicaid agency resigned this week
just as she was expected to face questions from lawmakers about her handling of a massive fraud scheme that largely targeted Native Americans
announced Wednesday that she had accepted the resignation of Carmen Heredia
director of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System
The governor lauded Heredia’s leadership of the agency while blaming Republican lawmakers for politicizing the confirmation process
saying it had become clear they would not confirm Heredia’s nomination
but they struggled to respond and failed to alert the public
which Heredia did along with other state leaders in May 2023
a spokesperson for Ducey did not comment on missed opportunities to stop the fraud but said that the former governor went to great lengths to assist in Hobbs’ transition.)
AHCCCS withheld payment to more than 300 businesses as the agency investigated allegations that they were fraudulently billing Medicaid for treatment services
and business owners were accused of allowing patients to continue the substance use they had hoped to overcome through treatment
Heredia said she submitted her resignation with a heavy heart and expressed concern that a partisan agenda had resulted in professionals being dragged “through career damaging hearings.” Two years ago
Senate Republicans derailed the nomination of one of Hobbs’ previous picks to lead the health department
Last September, more than a year after the crackdown began, the Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting and ProPublica reported that the suspensions had rendered patients homeless
were also left without access to the drug and alcohol treatment they were seeking
reaped huge Medicaid reimbursements by enrolling Native Americans in their programs and billing the state’s American Indian Health Program at exorbitant rates for services
(The AIHP is a Medicaid insurance option that
had no set limit on the amount of money providers could bill for services.)
said there had been more than 100 indictments and 25 convictions so far related to the scheme
She also said she expected more indictments to come
were allowed to resume billing Medicaid after clearing allegations with the state
But they said the suspensions still pushed them to the brink financially and upended their patients’ care
Heredia’s swift and aggressive response to the crisis — which authorities said was needed to root out fraud and save lives — caused concerns that behavioral health care
Heredia’s response has been incredibly disturbing
“We are left with a broken system due to Heredia’s mismanagement
and our vulnerable populations are caught up in this collapse.”
A spokesperson for Senate Republicans declined a request for an interview with Hoffman
While Hoffman’s statement mostly focused on the fraud scheme that authorities say cost the state $2 billion
he said he also took issue with other matters within AHCCCS involving long-term care
the director of the Arizona Department of Health Services
Cunico was set to appear before lawmakers for a confirmation hearing
Cunico said she was proud of her work at the department but made the difficult decision to withdraw her nomination after it became clear she wouldn’t be confirmed either
Her resignation comes two years after Hobbs’ previous pick to lead the health department withdrew her nomination following a heated confirmation hearing
Hoffman said Cunico had defended public health officials’ pandemic response during meetings with lawmakers but did not provide details
Hoffman previously sponsored legislation that prohibited state and local agencies from enacting vaccine mandates
The governor defended Heredia’s response to the fraud crisis and said both Heredia and Cunico had worked on a range of initiatives
including improving access to maternal health care
“Carmen Heredia helped root out a multi-billion dollar wave of Medicaid fraud and the related humanitarian fallout which the previous administration ignored,” Hobbs said in a statement
and abuse in our healthcare system is a model for the nation
and she always ensured people who needed help continued to get it.”
“The Senate’s unprecedented politicization of the director confirmation process has ended the directorship of two healthcare professionals who have made our state government run more efficiently and more effectively.”

Ginger Costa-Jackson sings the title role in Bizet’s Carmen at Florida Grand Opera
Georges Bizet’s Carmen is one of opera’s timeless masterpieces
Long a great introduction to the art form for neophytes
the work tends to transcend and survive the most varied directional concepts
The opera made it through Florida Grand Opera’s new production
which opened on Saturday night at the Arsht Center—but barely
is set in the period of the Spanish Civil War of the 1930’s
The gypsy Carmen is portrayed as a freedom fighter against the fascist forces of Francisco Franco
That is a valid concept but hardly a new one
the brilliant Actors Studio-trained director Frank Corsaro helmed a powerful production at New York City Opera that transferred the opera’s story to that period
that production was devoid of excessive and gratuitous violence
Todaro’s iteration opens with Franco’s forces executing a prisoner over the orchestral fate motif
when Carmen and her friends capture the officer of the guard Zuniga
The story of the troubled love of Carmen and the officer Don José is told straightforwardly but
José kills Carmen by drowning her in a water tub outside of the bullfighting arena
there are several questionable musical decisions
flamenco singer Mariela Mejia and guitarist Jorge Perez appear on stage and perform while a female dancer offers some choreographic heat
While the audience seemed to greatly enjoy it
such an interlude is totally out of place in Bizet’s score
That’s all of a piece with the total omission of the opening chorus of the final act and a heavy cut in the smuggler’s ensemble in Act III
Only about ten per cent of that wonderful number was sung
Bizet’s original opera comique version with spoken dialogue would have worked better for Todaro’s concept
The Bizet music that Ernest Guiraud (who wrote the recitatives) omitted from the grand opera version gives the opera a more somber and tragic cast
Todaro’s array of colorful costumes and Rosa Mercedes’ athletic
Todaro has skillfully utilized the late Allen Charles Klein’s sets from a previous FGO production
imperious Carmen who knows how to dominate the stage and the action
though medium-sized mezzo can turn raw at the top
She was at her best in interactions with the Don José of Rafael Davila
Costa-Jackson could land some vocal wattage and she had real chemistry with Davila
caught between Carmen’s allure and his background and family
Davila’s subtle and nuanced rendition of “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” was the vocal highlight of the night
His final confrontation with Carmen radiated dramatic heat
Marina Costa-Jackson (one of Ginger’s two singing sisters) was an outstanding Micaëla
She cut a striking figure as she attempted to save José from his doom
Her attractive soprano soared in the first act duet with Davila
Micaëla’s aria in the third act was given emotive power and rapturous lyricism
Alexander Birch Elliott played the matador Escamillo as a dandy with a booming baritone that made the “Toreador Song” an appropriate rock-star moment
He could turn soft and supple in the Act IV duet with Costa-Jackson’s Carmen
Carmen’s colleagues Frasquita and Mercedes were voiced with vibrance by Sydney Dardis and Mary Burke Barber who brought lively
Phillip Lopez as Zuniga and Joseph Canuto Leon as Moralés brought firm low voices to the top officers
As the smugglers (or resistance leaders or whatever) Dancaïro and Remendado
Former FGO music director Ramón Tebar drew outstanding playing from the orchestra with a particularly excellent flute solo in the pastoral Prelude to Act III
His mostly moderate tempos maintained coherence and worked well with Todaro’s production
cigarette workers and the crowd at the tavern and the bullring
the chorus (under Jared Peroune) was consistently strong and the children from the Florida Singing Sons (under Daniel Bates and Malcolm Rogers) performed with vigor and unity
Many elements of the production proved enjoyable but despite some fine singing and much visual pageantry
this Carmen was ultimately let down by an overly sensationalist production and cavalier cuts to the score
Florida Grand Opera repeats Carmen 2 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Arsht Center in Miami and 7:30 p.m. April 24 and 26 at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Miriam Costa-Jackson sings Micaëla on April 13 and 24. fgo.org

This production was so awful for so many reasons that a group of us walked out at intermission
the flamenco guitar interlude during the scene change to Act II was horribly out of place with Bizet’s score
the “slide” from the flamenco interlude back to the score stepped all over one of Bizet’s most memorable and delicate opening measures in all of opera
They also continued to seat dozens of latecomers as much as half an hour after the performance started
complete with shining cell phone flashlights
regardless of what was in progress on stage

is the culmination of my years-long fascination with the wonderful genre of instrumental opera fantasies
I first fell in love with opera fantasies while attending summer music camps as a teenager
Franz Waxman and Pablo De Sarasate’s fantasies on Bizet’s Carmen were staples of the summer festival repertory of my violin-playing peers
and they were my first exposure to this sub-genre
As an ambitious young cellist
Something about the virtuosic nature of the music – like a daring
high-wire circus act – thrilled me as a listener
As I watched my colleagues effortlessly whip up scales in tenths
I wondered: “Why can’t cellists do that?” – or
I like to imagine that the great cellists of the 19th century wondered the same as they witnessed their violin- and piano-playing counterparts flourish in the heyday of instrumental virtuosity
The ambitions of the great cellist-composers of that era – Servais
among others – are beautifully realized in their many concert works
which collectively advanced the possibilities of cello technique and continue to inspire composers today
we see some of the first extensive examples of techniques like octaves
These technical ideas heightened the expectations of a virtuoso cellist’s technical capacity – elevating the status of the cello to be more of an equal to piano and violin – and laid the groundwork for the cello writing of practically every prominent composer since
Two of the 19th-century works featured on the album – Adrien-François Servais’ fantasy on Donizetti’s La fille du régiment
and François-George Hainl’s Fantaisie sur des Motifs de Guillaume Tell – are excellent and early examples of this forward-thinking virtuosic writing
Borletti-Buitoni Trust film about Zlatomir Fung's recording of 'The Freedom of Fantasies'
While discovering these obscure works during the pandemic lockdown
I fell in love with the spirit of the genre
which exemplified instrumental freedom and personal expression
I was still searching for a satisfying fantasy on my favourite opera
By the time Carmen became an established classic
many prominent virtuoso cellists of the early and mid-nineteenth centuries had passed
The popularity of the genre of the opera fantasy
once a significant vehicle for virtuosos (Servais alone wrote around two dozen before he died in 1866)
The most notable fantasies on Carmen for cello and piano are those by Joseph Hollman (a pupil of Servais)
Hollman’s fantasy lacks virtuosity; it is about as challenging as a standard concert piece from the era
Orr’s fantasy is quite a bit more successful
I found the overall demeanour of the arrangement to be a bit languid
I felt it was important that it reflected my tastes and personality as a cellist
My dream was to be able to play a Carmen fantasy that captured the furiously concentrated musical energy of the original operatic score
the composer of Fantasia Carmèn (the final track featured on the album) is one of my closest friends and musical collaborators
We met at the Juilliard School as students and quickly became friends
he had already written a substantial solo cello piece for me
It pushed my technical limits to the brink
so I was curious to see what he might do with a hyper-virtuosic fantasy on Carmen
I had confided in him my dream of a great Carmen fantasy for cello and piano as early as 2018
the project finally came to fruition.
Estrin takes the notion of a “fantasy” and deconstructs it in the best possible way
Estrin aims to create a world onstage that exists only inside the mind of the cellist: the audience members are observers as the solo cellist recalls tunes and moments from Carmen with a fickle
subject to the whims of the cellist’s imagination
Achieving this striking performative effect requires the cellist to perform unconventional tasks for classical musicians
Adapting Fantasia Carmèn into an audio-only version for Fantasies was a stimulating challenge
How would it be possible to convey physical movement with just sound
How would the spoken elements make any sense without visual reference
How would we manage without audience laughter
which had become an integral part of the piece
Marshall and I collaborated on finding a solution for over six months
going through dozens of drafts for a script
driving the album’s editors crazy (thank you
Mike and Nick – we owe you one!) We looked to techniques from radio drama for inspiration
Perhaps we could add a new character (or two) to create a dialogue or “situation” where a cellist would improvise the virtuosic fantasy
Maybe we could add a laugh track for the funny moments; if the audience were to become confused
We finally got to the heart of the problem: Fantasia Carmèn is meant to be performed live
The imperfections of a live performance – the very things one aims to eliminate when professionally recording an album – are the central idea of the piece
the solo cellist attempts to execute an array of hyper-virtuosic cello techniques in 20 minutes
Since the piece is happening in the private fantasy world of the cellist
the mistakes (which are inevitable!) can be shrugged off
The fundamental ridiculousness of trying to play something so hard is part of the appeal; if the performer perfectly succeeds
This realization was ultimately the nadir of our process
we considered releasing the work without extramusical elements
Marshall and I came up with a solution that satisfied both of us
we believe it allows the work to stand on its own while providing the audience a glimpse into the piece’s original spirit
is that intrigued listeners and fellow cellists seek the work out in a live context
where it can be enjoyed in its original conception
Alongside the odyssey of Fantasia Carmèn was my journey into the world of composing my own fantasy on Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa
My original hope for the album was to write a fantasy on George Benjamin’s opera Written on Skin
but I could not get the proper permissions
Jenůfa was recommended to me by Marshall as an alternative
I was only somewhat familiar with Janáček’s music
so being thrust into the world of one of his most well-known operas was a fascinating aesthetic encounter
I listened to the opera without referencing the libretto
trying to identify the moments that most enraptured me musically
engrossing storyline of Jenůfa is one of the opera’s most compelling elements
but I wanted to work solely with the musical elements to bring across the riveting tensions of the opera in a cello-piano arrangement
I wanted to synthesize everything I loved about opera fantasies
My first objective was to prioritize idiomatic
and continuity of phrasing more than raw technical execution
taking the sung lines from different characters in the opera
I also aimed to construct a fantasy that mirrored the source opera’s emotional textures
Unlike the 19th-century operas that were typical material for virtuosic transcription
Jenůfa favours a continual stream of musical ideas
transitioning between sections without pause
I hoped to convey this peculiar sense of continuity during transitions between the major musical sections of the fantasy
Tying these two priorities together was my hope that the fantasy would be emotionally authentic to the original work
passionate terror that Janáček explores in his opera
Including two 21st century opera fantasies on the album was essential to my original vision for the project
At the heart of it lies my pure enjoyment of these virtuosic medleys
They have limitless possibilities and are downright fun
Although two new fantasies can hardly be considered a rejuvenation of the form
I hope interested listeners sense that the genre is still ripe for exploration
live opera remains a privilege for those who live in large urban areas
At a time when opera companies all over the world are striving to create meaningful work
I believe that a robust tradition of fantasies on new operas – allowing performers to popularize the music in venues and locales where they might never appear in their original form – is one way to help opera continue to be a vibrant art form
I won’t be able to write a fantasy on Written on Skin
but I hope to write and perform fantasies on other significant contemporary operas
Maybe this album will inspire others to do the same

Exhibitions and Interviews reported on from London
From 1948 to 1953, Carmen Herrera lived in Paris
immersing herself in the city’s dynamic postwar artistic community while frequently traveling to New York and Havana
This period marked a decisive shift in her practice
as she moved from biomorphic forms and fevered
gestural compositions to the rigorous geometric abstraction that would define her career for the next seven decades
1948 – 1953—the most comprehensive presentation of her work from this period to-date— examines a young artist deep in experimentation
subsuming the seismic influences of many colliding midcentury art movements
in order to develop her own breakthrough language of painting.
Herrera’s years in Paris were a time of creative freedom and intellectual exchange
particularly through her participation in exhibitions such as the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles
where she exhibited alongside other prominent figures such as Theo van Doesburg
as well as younger artists associated with Venezuela’s Los Disidentes
The city exposed her to key modernist movements such as Bauhaus and Russian Suprematism
which deeply influenced the shift toward her own uniquely minimal language
Herrera began employing shaped canvases while also becoming a pioneer in solvent-based acrylics
is currently the oldest work in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to use this particular medium
a fact that was discovered through scientific analysis by the museum in 2021
dichromatic abstraction that would later become her signature
The painting’s four symmetrical ochre-colored triangles against a black background prefigure later masterpieces such as Black and White (1952) in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art
exemplifies Herrera’s precision and spatial tension
featuring a striking white dart slashing across a cobalt blue ground
both in its palette and bold linear composition
foreshadows Herrera’s future direction while also underscoring her approach to painting as object
This idea is further emphasized by the use of an artist-made frame
which was intended to prevent a buyer from re-framing the work
This concept evolves in subsequent pieces where she allowed her compositions to wrap about the edges
transforming them into fully three-dimensional forms.
Herrera’s Habana Series marks a pivotal moment in the artist’s development
showcasing her experimentation with gestural abstraction and Informalism during a brief stay in New York in 1950
“Carmen Herrera and the Paris School.” Created in response to transnational developments in Abstract Expressionism
these works contrast with the structured geometric compositions of her Paris paintings
Conquete de l’air (1950) features spontaneous brushstrokes
and vibrant colors applied without Herrera’s typical preparatory sketches
the paintings emphasize a tactile graphic quality with thick
Named after her first solo exhibition at Havana’s Lyceum and Lawn Tennis Club (December 1950 – January 1951)
the series reflects Herrera’s synthesis of Tachisme and Expressionism
blending the gestural techniques of Hans Hartung with those of Jackson Pollock.
The exhibition also features Early Dynasty (1953)
which demonstrates Herrera’s ambition and evolving style
she layers multiple colors and geometric forms
referencing motifs from earlier paintings to create a composition in constant motion
mushroom-like form at the top left echoes a similar shape in other canvasses from this period including Logique Coloree No
This tendency to revisit and refine geometric forms would become a hallmark of her later work
reinforcing her relentless pursuit of visual clarity and balance.
Herrera’s move back to New York in September 1953 presented challenges
as the art world’s gender and racial biases delayed her recognition
the radical developments of her Paris period laid the foundation for the rigorously precise
minimalist works that would define her later career
This exhibition builds on recent institutional recognition of Herrera’s artistic contributions during this period
including her inclusion in Women in Abstraction (Centre Pompidou
2021–22) and Americans in Paris (Grey Art Museum
It also precedes Both Sides of the Line: Carmen Herrera and Leon Polk Smith
a major touring museum show curated by Dana Miller
who also curated Carmen Herrera: Lines of Sight at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2016
Carmen Herrera, The Paris Years, 1948 –1953, 1st May – 1st August 2025 Lisson 508 West 24th Street
Installation Images: Exhibition view of ‘Carmen Herrera: The Paris Years
She moved frequently between France and Cuba throughout the 1930s and 1940s; having started studying architecture at the Universidad de La Habana
before exhibiting five times at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles
where she lived and worked until her death in 2022
Herrera’s work was the subject of a large-scale survey, Carmen Herrera: Lines of Sight
which travelled to the Wexner Center for the Arts
Columbus (2017) and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (K20)
Herrera premiered her Estructuras Monumentales
massive aluminium structures largely conceived in the 1960s and 1970s
at City Hall Park in New York City in 2019
que te quiero verde (2020) was unveiled at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin in May of 2023 as part of the museum’s grounds redesign
an exhibition focusing on the last fifteen years Herrera’s output opened at SITE Santa Fe
Herrera’s work was featured in Adriano Pedrosa’s exhibition Straniere Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia
Herrera’s work is in numerous public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art
New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art
London; Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (K20)
Düsseldorf; the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi; El Museo del Barrio
Washington DC; the Smithsonian American Art Museum

Throughout the campaign, you’ll find pieces of data like airport codes, exports, national languages, government structures, and more. This self-built almanac comes in handy when you’re on a VILE villain’s tail and need to decide what to do next. Typically, you’ll have a handful of clues to go by — a color or pattern on the flag, the spoken language, or whether residents drive on the left or right side of the road. You’ll use those clues to determine your next city from three provided choices.
Every case has several chapters with individual heists connected by an overarching villain. The cases start out at the scene of the crime, whether that crime is the theft of a Japanese bullet train, or the replacement of a city’s free Wi-Fi hotspots with paid “Vi-Fi” versions. In each city, you can visit three locations to collect clues that bring you one step closer to solving the case.
Though I did make some mistakes, the main campaign isn’t exactly what I’d call challenging. But considering the series’ history as a children’s educational resource, I may not be the target audience. I could see parents and kids playing through Carmen Sandiego together and having a great time as children build critical thinking skills and parents brush up on elementary-school geography. And though it’s on the simpler side, Carmen Sandiego never feels dumbed down.
The historical cases pull from the same list of cities as the main campaign, and it’s only a few hours before you’ve seen everywhere in the world that Carmen Sandiego can visit. I’m not sure why they couldn’t have expanded her global reach in the main campaign, but it results in every environment feeling a bit repetitive after a while. Still, there are often new facts to find upon revisiting, so every city is always worth another look.
Maybe it’s the nostalgia goggles, but none of these shortcomings bothered me enough to make me want to stop playing. Each chapter is paced really well, so it always feels like you’re making progress. I love games that make you think your way out of problems, and for the most part, that’s exactly what Carmen Sandiego demands of the player.

Why isn't Sherlock Holmes on the list of video game detectives

As a trained structural and architectural designer
and proportions needed to create intricately designed custom-made costumes for young Baile Folklórico dancers throughout the state of Arizona
Carmen Baron was born in 1960 in the town of Atil
Her house was made in a traditional rural Mexican style of adobe
which Baron learned on her grandmother's pedal machine
Her mother taught her the basics for sewing as well as how to make dresses without patterns which later became a creative expression
and Baron went on to study Architecture at the University of Arizona
While working professionally as a structural and architectural designer
Baron also studied Mexican folk dance (Baile Folklórico)
She danced for seven years with Instituto de Folklore Mexicano in Tucson
while also volunteering as a seamstress for the group
Following the death of her teacher and the end of Instituto de Folklore Mexicano
to pass on her knowledge of the traditional dances to new generations
Baron has taught Mexican folk dance and made nearly all the costumes for Danzacultura students
The students have been featured at festivals in and around Tucson
including De Anza Days and Presidio San Agustin
Folklórico costumes represent social dances and songs from predominately nine different geographic regions of Mexico
circular skirts with multi-colored hand-sewn ribbon trim
each animating which Mexican region or dance is being performed
requires skill and knowledge of the distinctive cultural expressions represented
Baron is committed to maintaining the art of hand-made folklórico costumes by documenting traditional methods and teaching younger generations
she mentors students in the steps for making the Mexican folk costumes
from drawing patterns to cutting and stitching the garments
as well as how much and what type of fabric is needed
Her costumes have been exhibited at the Presidio San Agustin Tortilla Festival in Tucson
Baron received a Southwest Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Award to support her in sharing her knowledge of traditional folklórico costumes and sewing with her first apprentice
the City of Tucson’s Parks & Recreation Department recognized Baron with the Commissioners Award for her thousands of volunteer hours at its El Rio Neighborhood Center

Harrington piggyback to mow down CardinalsApril 8th
PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates’ fifth starter spot was one of the last jobs up for grabs this Spring Training, with the decision to go with Carmen Mlodzinski over Thomas Harrington not being announced until the last day of the Grapefruit League schedule
With both right-handers at PNC Park on Monday, and both coming off disappointing first starts in the road series vs. the Rays, the game plan essentially became: Why not try both? Mlodzinski went five innings to start and Harrington covered the back four. Mix in a season-best eight runs on 10 hits from the offense, and it was a recipe for an 8-4 win over the Cardinals
manager Derek Shelton would say afterwards
The bats heating up on a frigid night certainly played into the calculus of the decision-making
letting Harrington hang in the eighth and ninth instead of going to a high-leverage arm -- which let the rest of the bullpen get the night off
Harrington’s Major League debut in Tampa last Tuesday did not go as smoothly as hoped
It wouldn’t be the first time a player struggled a bit out of the gate
but he stuck around in the Pirates’ bullpen after the outing rather than return to the Minors
Monday was still not perfect -- he allowed a pair of homers and three runs over his four innings -- but the sweeper and changeup that helped make him MLB Pipeline's No. 77 overall prospect in baseball played well and missed bats
"I think the first game, there was a lot of nerves and emotions pitching in that,” said Harrington, the Pirates' No. 3 prospect
especially attacking guys and getting ahead early."
Most starting pitchers have plans for their first strikeout ball or their first win
It’s a different road than the one the 2022 first-rounder probably envisioned
He was moved to the bullpen when he neared the Majors and had strong showings there in 2023 and '24
But Mlodzinski expressed desires to get an opportunity to start again in exit meetings
and the Pirates let him explore it this spring
With Jared Jones and Johan Oviedo on the injured list to start the year
The Pirates have had bullpen troubles early this year
It does raise a question of if Mlodzinski could perhaps be better suited in an eighth- or ninth-inning role
which he appeared to be on the path toward a few years ago
but Shelton reiterated pregame that Mlodzinski is a starter at this time
The Pirates’ catcher homered and tripled Monday
Bart loves diving into the chess match of each game
and Mlodzinski is more than just a pawn in his eyes

Monday may not have been his first Major League win
“I think settling in as a starter and learning how to make that transition
I feel like he is settling in a little bit
five to seven innings is a lot different.”
Mlodzinski struggled his second time through the order in his first start against the Rays
he navigated the Cardinals’ lineup a second and third time much more effectively
resulting in six strikeouts over five innings of one-run ball
That could be a building block for more starts as he better learns this role at the highest level of competition
“This is something I'm going to look back on and dive into and say
What didn't work today?'” Mlodzinski said
So there's things to build off of and there's confidence to build on

Mlodzinski nabs Bucs' final rotation spot over HarringtonMarch 24th
This will be Mlodzinski’s first turn as a starter at the Major League level (though he has made five starts as an opener before)
The 26-year-old right-hander recorded a 3.38 ERA over 50 2/3 innings last season
A starter for most of his journey through the Pirates’ organization after being a Competitive Balance Round A pick in 2020
Mlodzinski had used appropriate avenues like exit interviews to express his desire to be a starter again
The Pirates gave him an opportunity this spring to prove he can pitch in the role
and he allowed four earned runs over 9 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts compared to three walks
“He was pretty consistent all spring,” manager Derek Shelton said
I think the way he took care of himself this winter
we’ve seen the breaking ball continue to get better
Mlodzinski should be in a position where he can make starts without a piggyback pitcher to bridge innings behind him
In his most recent outing at Pirate City on March 21
Mlodzinski threw 60 pitches over four innings
Harrington only made four outings this spring, throwing on the backfields mostly. Ranked as the No. 79 overall prospect in the game
Harrington struck out seven and allowed six earned runs over his 9 2/3 innings this spring
but he flashed a mid-90s fastball and quality slider that has made him one of the top pitching prospects in the system
“Really impressed with the spring he’s had
and we think that he’s very close to being a big league pitcher,” Shelton said
"It was really cool being able to stick around and be around these guys in the clubhouse,” Harrington said
“It gives me a world of confidence going into the season."
There’s an opening in the rotation because Jared Jones will almost certainly start the season on the injured list with right elbow discomfort
The Pirates are still awaiting another opinion on Jones to learn more about the injury
though there’s hope for some clarity in the coming days
With the fifth starter job set, and Endy Rodríguez being named the backup catcher and a part of the team’s first-base mix early in the season while Spencer Horwitz is on the injured list
most of the major jobs that were up for grabs this spring have been decided
The team doesn’t have a set roster in place yet
the day before the Pirates open their season in Miami against the Marlins
But as the final bullpen and bench jobs are being set
there is some clarity about how the roster will shake out
Per sources, left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki is expected to be with the team in Miami, while outfielder/first baseman DJ Stewart is not. Stewart has an opt-out on his Minor League deal Monday, while Borucki has passed on an opt-out he had on Friday. Shelton said before Monday’s 5-1 loss to the Twins that no decision has been made on either player yet
Borucki was one of the Pirates’ top bullpen arms in 2023
but injuries limited him to just 11 Major League frames in 2024
allowing just one earned run with 14 strikeouts over 9 2/3 innings while flashing a new splitter
He would need to be added back to the 40-man roster after signing a Minor League deal this winter
Stewart started strong this spring and made strides defensively at first base
which was a relatively new position for the traditional outfielder
but he saw his OPS dip to .798 while striking out 16 times in 46 plate appearances

Mlodzinski's nasty sinker may be key to more efficient outingsRight-hander logs 3 strong frames before Rays' 4-run 4th turns tide in series openerApril 1st
TAMPA -- Carmen Mlodzinski learned that he had won the camp competition for the final spot in the Pirates’ rotation early last week
But he had been preparing for his chance to prove that he can be a bona fide starter for much longer than that
“I think he mentally started approaching it last year in September, when we sat down and he expressed the desire to start,” manager Derek Shelton said prior to the Pirates’ 6-1 loss to the Rays on Monday night at George M
Mlodzinski got that first chance in the opener of a three-game set against the Rays
The results were decidedly mixed as an impressive first three innings were followed by a four-run fourth that put Pittsburgh in an inescapable hole en route to a 1-4 start to the season
“The confidence I am going to take away is those first three innings were solid,” Mlodzinski said
“I felt like I executed what I wanted to do
The side that sucks is the fourth inning.”
A first-round pick by the Pirates (No
Mlodzinski had been used almost solely as a reliever through two Major League seasons
Five of his 75 appearances were technically starts
typically out of the game after two innings at most
Monday’s game was a stage for him to show that he can be a valuable asset in this rotation, something the Pirates need with Jared Jones and Johan Oviedo on the injured list and without a timetable for a return
There were certainly bright spots in Mlodzinski’s 3 2/3 innings against Tampa Bay
The right-hander came out of the gate firing
reaching up to 98.3 mph with his four-seamer in the first inning
He struck out Brandon Lowe on an elevated heater at 97 mph and then finished off a clean opening frame by dotting a 90 mph slider on the outside corner to get Junior Caminero looking
That power fastball and slider were already in Mlodzinski’s arsenal when he was coming out of the bullpen
It was a sinker in the second inning that was one of his best pitches of the game
Mlodzinski threw a 96 mph sinker down-and-in to Christopher Morel
But Morel took a hack and rolled over into a 6-4-3 double play
“I think that’s going to help me with efficiency
I think that’s something I can adjust going to the second and third time through -- where am I going to use that?”
Mlodzinski dealt with traffic in the third inning
but he was able to strand runners on second and third by getting Lowe to whiff at another elevated fastball
which was something that really made us feel confident that he can be a starting pitcher,” Shelton said
“It wasn't one time through the order; we saw it maintain in the fourth inning
A lack of execution and hints of fatigue in Monday’s fourth inning led to a quick end to Mlodzinski’s night. The frame began with the Rays racking up four consecutive hits, although none of them would be classified as hard hit
Morel’s RBI single through the left side came off a sweeper that broke his bat
But whereas Mlodzinski was hitting the corners with regularity through the first three innings
his pitches in the fourth caught too much of the plate
It was indicative of a hurler who is being stretched out for the first time in the big leagues
Mlodzinski threw 66 pitches against the Rays
He had not exceeded 48 pitches in any previous regular-season game
as he starts navigating a second time through and possibly a third time through
is where possibly the pitch execution has to stay sharp."
“That’s why the starting pitchers make the money -- because it’s hard,” Mlodzinski said
