It’s been 3⅟₂ years since thoroughbred horses last stormed down the stretch at Arlington Park
but that doesn’t mean the thrill of racing is gone from Arlington Heights
it was tiny hounds instead of horses that provided the rush of adrenaline as the 11th annual Chihuahua Race brought pups and their people to the village’s downtown
Hosted by Salsa 17 Mexican Grill and benefiting The Buddy Foundation
a charity for homeless and abandoned animals
the races were open to any dog under 20 pounds
Among the pups giving a dogged effort was Shayna
Buffalo Grove resident Eric Guthman’s miniature dachshund
“She won her heat,” the proud dog dad declared after Shayna crossed the finish line first in an preliminary race
A violent dog attack took place Saturday on the Upper West Side
Penny the chihuahua was walking on Saturday evening with her co-owner on Columbus Avenue at West 85th Street, when she was attacked by two pit bulls, according to one of her two co-owners, Lauren Claus, multiple eyewitnesses, video evidence, and the police
“Penny passed them on the side of the sidewalk
and one of the dogs lunged at her,” Claus
“The owner sort of grabbed his dog back when he did that
the brown female dog on a different lead [leash] lunged at my dog
and the person holding that dog dropped the lead and ran away
so that dog had full free rein to attack my dog.”
was — along with nearby good Samaritans — eventually able to wrestle the 10-year-old service dog out of the jaws of one of the pit bulls
The two people with the dogs that attacked Penny then got into a car and left the scene
Claus and multiple eyewitnesses told the Rag
Penny’s owner rushed her to a hospital for immediate surgery
“She’s doing much better,” Claus told the Rag about Penny
There were so many people there to help and take care of her
she has injuries that took over two hours of surgery,” Claus added
“She is very badly bruised and on a lot of pain meds.”
When Claus reached out to the police about what had happened
NYPD informed her that dogs are considered property within the city’s legal system
NYPD confirmed to West Side Rag the “vicious animal” attack on Saturday and stated that at least one woman was also bitten by the two dogs
and that an “unknown individual” pushed a man who tried to help the situation
who let local residents know she was looking into the matter on Sunday
confirmed the same issue about turning to the police in the hopes of holding the pit bull owners accountable
Brewer also mentioned that she believes the same two dogs fatally attacked a different dog earlier this year in Central Park
When asked what Claus would say to the owners of the attacking dogs if she got the chance
“I don’t think I could say anything rational right now
“If they didn’t care in that moment
I don’t think anything I could say would make them care now
because it’s a civil matter,” she continued
“There is nothing in the law that we can fall back on
We are trying to get the dogs off the streets
but we’re not sure if that’s going to work.”

So sad – I feel horrible for the owner and Penny
There should be a penalty for the owner(s) of these dogs
And of course if someone had done something to their dogs they would have been complaining
even though the dogs had it coming to them
I know that most pit bulls allegedly aren’t dangerous
Someone should be required to sign some sort of a waiver in order to own one
In the past few days I saw someone with a muzzle on their dog
My initial thought was why would someone want to own a dog where this is necessary
but perhaps the personality of a dog changes over time
I appreciate that at least this dog owner was considerate enough to recognize a potential issue and take steps to minimize the chance of potential problems
Muzzles are more and more commonly being used to prevent scavenging (like eating chicken bones from the street.) They’re a really useful tool for dogs who could injure themselves by what they eat (some even eat rocks and other inedible.) This might even be more common than for aggressive dogs because unfortunately those who want to own aggressive dogs are not usually so responsible
Someone did get a license plate & the car has thousands of dollars in unpaid tickets
They’ve identified the owner of the pitbulls
I’m hopeful that Penny will get justice with how the community has rallied around her
The chickens have come home to roost in NYC
This comment is so stupid and lazy it makes my head hurt
Everybody needs to stop being so cowardly and rebuke all the degeneracy going on
lazy and nowhere to be seen until its much too late
They do not deter crime at all nor do they solve crime
NYPD “cleared” (meaning a suspect was identified
arrested and charged) 76.3% of murder cases
56.2% of robbery cases and 44.8% of rape cases
but please continue to tell us how they are inept and lazy and don’t solve crime
https://nypdrecruit.com/
Dogs are defined as “chattel” in US law
which is why any dog food or toy product made outside the US can contain poisons
Changing their classification will likely result in the outlawing of all dog food and toy products made outside the US
which is far too problematic for the US economy
Why does she think there’s no legal recourse here.
Dog owners are legally responsible for the actions for their dogs
Someone is giving her very bad legal advice
I believe the point is it’s not criminal if it’s between two animals
But the dogs bit one of the bystanders and the owners assaulted one as well
There is video from another angle clearly showing one of the pitbull owners dragging and pulling the hair of one of the individuals who was trying to intervene in the dog attack
Doesn’t that escalate this to a criminal matter
Here is the video (be forewarned, it’s disturbing): https://www.reddit.com/r/Upperwestside/comments/1kfjpgo/tw_graphic_content/
This is devastating and could have resulted in an even more tragic ending
however I would suggest the following: seizure and likely euthanasia of both dogs by the ACC; significant fines for the owners
a pet ownership responsibility class and a five-year ban on owning a dog (with home visits every 6 months to ensure compliance)
I would rather my tax dollars go towards this than the many of the other useless initiatives the city has been taking my money for
The other glaring issue that no one wants to address is about the pit bull breed
appellate federal and state courts across the United States have affirmed the unique dangerousness of the pit bull breed
Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population
but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982
Pit bulls are inherently dangerous no matter how they’re treated
the largest animal-rights organization in the world
supports breed-specific sterilization for pit bulls
so it seems reasonable to target them,” said Daphna Nachminovitch
PETA’s senior vice president of cruelty investigations
“The public is misled to believe that pit bulls are like any other dog
And they just aren’t.” Even the ASPCA acknowledges on its website that pit bulls are genetically different than other dogs
“Pit bulls have been bred to behave differently during a fight,” it says
“They may not give warning before becoming aggressive
and they’re less likely to back down when clashing with an opponent.”
While it is not hard to find this opinion online
2) We are not sure that the dogs in question are of any of the so-called “pit bull” breeds
Note that people usually identify the breed by look: “a catch-all term for any dog of medium size with a blocky head and a short
smooth coat,” as author Bronwyn Dickey put it in her history called “Pit Bull.” While these dogs look bully-like
it is wildly inappropriate to thus malign all dogs who look this way
3) It is not the case that any dog is “inherently dangerous.” You are mistaken that all herding dogs herd
bully breeds have been bred to be loyal companions
Any time a dog bites and holds onto another animal
It is not inevitable because they are dogs
If you look at the owners’ behavior during this incident
I think you get a better sense of where this came from: the owners are completely non-responsive
maybe except actually interfering with removing their dog’s jaws from the small dog named Penny
Dogs can be encouraged or allowed to pursue prey
Large dogs may be more powerful than small dogs
Owners’ negligence to these simple issues is what caused this horrible event
People are so oblivious to their own dogs and it’s not just pitbulls
I’ve been snapped at buy far more little yappy rat dogs than big dogs
I’m very sorry this happened and hope people just pay a bit more attention in general
Yappy rat dogs are unlikely to take off your arm
but I’ll add that even if Pitbulls were not any more dangerous than other dogs
the simple fact is that they do not respond to human behavior when they begin attacking
They will not let go no matter if they are sprayed with hoses
NOTHING stops them short of seriously injuring them or killing them
And that aspect was certainly bred into that dog
These dogs were bred to latch on and never let go
if a different dog breed snaps at you it doesn’t have the jaw torque power that a pitbull does — they have a bite force of around 235 pounds per square inch (PSI)
which is absolutely insane (few breeds come close to this and a few surpass it)
I agree completely these dogs should be sterilized and outlawed; the breeding must be discontinued
I have fostered 3 “dog reactive” pit.bulls and adopted one of them
I was super super careful with all of them
Of course I still never let her off leash in a dog run and was careful around other dogs
I am not convinced another chance for these dogs would be appropriate
but if a dog is at this stage of aggression
And the owners should be punished for both the damage the dogs have done
Hope something’s done before a toddler or child is killed—poor Penny must have been terrified and is lucky to be alive—hope the owner gets justice and Penny recovers fully and quickly
If you watch the other video you can clearly see the dog owner drag another man
who is attempting to get the pit bull off Penny
bring animal control to deal with the dogs
which (and I say this as a dog lover) should 100% be euthanized
Not hard to just do your jobs and keep the community safe
It is not just a civil matter – that just is not true
These dogs are threatening the safety of humans – and even if you view dogs as property
it is a crime to destroy another person’s property
Here’s a link to a Google Doc that asks UWSers to help identify the owners through two fairly good screen captures of their faces
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdVaIjYsDyWMsEkfUZIuCJevK_saQcXe9w47AloWkaU15Jm0w/viewform
There are so many irresponsible dog owners and they absolutely should be held accountable
There is one guardian who also has two untrained
large dogs on West 79th that pull and lunge at every single dog
It’s terrifying to see him try to keep his grip on the one leash holding them both and I’m not sure what horrible event their guardian is waiting for before he realizes he isn’t doing those dogs any favors
They can get only limited exercise and he clearly doesn’t have the expertise to train them
he doesn’t care about anyone else on the block or their pets
Or he is afraid that the only alternative is to kill one or both of his dogs – which it may be if he doesn’t have a lot of money to pay for help
I had two big dogs who were reactive and it cost me a freaking fortune to get the help I needed – which I did
and they became well behaved and we learned to manage them (eg I never walked them together
unless I had a strong person to help me (they were not pit bulls and I could hold one
But I was frequently very grateful that I could obtain the help I needed; if I couldn’t have
I would probably have had to kill one or the other
and I did love them – and I also knew it was my fault that they were not given the early training they needed
so it would have been my fault that they died
doesn’t change the fact that it has to be dealt with – but it may come from a good place
I hope he gets the message before something happens
This was your solution – to kill one of your dogs?
What kind of Sophie’s freaking choice is that
I can’t believe someone would even consider it especially claiming they loved the dogs
they are a huge responsibility and you managed to get not just one but two and then was considering to kill one
How is it not a criminal matter when a person was bitten and you have repeat behavior
You also have one of them destroying a phone
How do we connect to continue Go Fund me for Penny the dog

Everyone keeps saying it is a civil matter under law
Gale Brewer is a lawmaker and can change that for future incidents
Brewer is so worked up about the situation
Isn’t that the purpose/job of a city councilperson
I don’t know what to say – it is terrifying
Unfortunately if the same dogs attacked another dog in the past
it is unlikely that the owners will be held responsible
You can tell from the video the owners exhibited totally antisocial behavior
Even for pulling someone’s hair – we had cases when Bragg let truly vicious assaults slide

met after winning in their Guinness World Record categories
A playdate between the world’s tallest and smallest living dogs went the way of most dog park encounters despite the 3ft (0.91-meter) height difference – lots of tail wagging
Reginald, a seven-year-old great dane from Idaho, and Pearl, a chihuahua from Florida, are both certified winners in their respective height titles by Guinness World Records. The fact that Reginald is the size of a small horse and Pearl is as small as an apple didn’t stop them from getting along famously.
Pearl, a four-year-old who stands at 3.59in (9.14cm), comes from a long line of short dogs. Her aunt Milly, a previous record holder in the same category, until she died in 2020, also was under 4in (10.16cm) tall.

AZ (AZFamily) — An animal abuse investigation is underway after a man was caught on camera beating a chihuahua to death with a shovel in Peoria
Officials say the man in the video claimed he intended to “smack the dog on the butt” using a shovel but the dog turned and was hit in the head instead
The man also claims he was acting in self-defense to protect his cats and chickens after the dog got into the yard somehow
Arizona’s Family spoke with Cynthia Romero
She couldn’t believe someone would treat an animal like that
“I was shocked and immediately felt disgusted and just couldn’t believe someone was capable of doing something so horrific to a small and innocent animal,” Romero said
The Peoria police said that when they responded to the initial 911 call
the video provided by one of the neighbors was not available

TINTON FALLS -‑ A chihuahua named Daisy got away from her sitter Sunday evening and was last seen sneaking under a fence into restricted Naval Weapons Station Earle property off Shafto Road on Tuesday
is now hoping the Navy can find her and bring her home safe
"Imagine knowing your dog is on the other side of a restricted fence that you can't get into
Or that if she tries to come back she has to cross Shafto Road with all heavy truck traffic," an anxious Lane told the Asbury Park Press on Tuesday afternoon
told the Press that base officials are aware of the lost dog and Navy personnel are keeping an eye out for the little pup during their daily perimeter sweeps of the sprawling and heavily wooded naval base
However it is also connected to Middletown and the Sandy Hook Bay by the narrow 15 mile-long Normandy Road
The dog weighs nine pounds and is one year old
This past weekend she left the dog with a friend while she attended a memorial service in Brick
The dog then escaped underneath the sitter's feet when she opened the dog

Mexican authorities have reported that the measles outbreak in West Texas
has now reached the northern state of Chihuahua
we have not declared an emergency; but we are concerned
and we are working hard because measles can spread anywhere in the state,” Dr
Most cases were detected in the Mennonite communities north of Cuauhtemoc, 270 miles south of El Paso, Texas. Authorities have confirmed 15 measles cases in a Mennonite community in western Chihuahua
A 16th case has been confirmed in the city of Namiquipa
at least 90% of a community must be vaccinated to prevent outbreaks
the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends
Mexican officials are worried because there isn’t an accurate count of how many adults in Mexico’s Mennonite communities are immunized against measles
children enrolled in Mexican schools usually get the vaccine
The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Care
called on parents to complete their children’s vaccination schedules
and urged adults under 39 years of age to get the measles vaccine if they have not received it
“It’s essential to recognize that the vaccine is a preventative measure,” Ruiz noted
adding that the vaccine is currently available at all health centers across the various institutions
Measles is a highly contagious disease characterized by high fever
respiratory complications that can be fatal
An infected person can transmit the virus to between 16 and 18 people
According to the Associated Press
outbreak began in a Mennonite community in West Texas with low vaccination rates
“Many of the children are homeschooled or attend smaller private schools, and many are unvaccinated,” Bill Moss
executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center
Chihuahua health authorities believe residents who have family in Texas or who traveled there
West Texas and New Mexico communities have reported over 250 cases
Two unvaccinated individuals have died from measles-related causes
including an unvaccinated school-aged child
29 people in Texas remained hospitalized due to measles
As of March 10, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 32,488 suspected cases and 16,144 cumulative cases worldwide
mainly in Yemen (7,548) India (6,661) Thailand (6,224) and Ethiopia (4,596)

A Las Vegas man has been arrested after being caught on camera throwing a small Chihuahua into a dumpster
an act that has sparked outrage across the Las Vegas Valley
charging him with three felony counts after the disturbing video circulated widely on social media
VIDEO: Abel Garcia talks to Vegas Pet Rescue about suspect being released on bail
The footage shows a shirtless man walking up to a residential dumpster with a dog in hand before tossing the animal inside like garbage
VIDEO: Camera captures man throwing dog in dumpster
who lives three houses down from where the incident occurred
"It's just—it's quite shocking that people behave that way," Abbe said
court records show Flores posted a $9,000 bail and was released from custody the next morning after paying just $50 to a bondsman
it seems like there'd be something on the law books that'd be a little stronger of a penalty," Abbe said
Flores was scheduled to appear in Las Vegas Justice Court Friday afternoon
His next court date is set for June 2 in Clark County Eighth District Court
I found that Flores has a criminal history in Clark County dating back to 2013
followed by a domestic battery charge in 2018 for which he received probation
Another domestic battery charge came in 2019
is recovering in the care of Vegas Pet Rescue after spending nearly 24 hours trapped in the dumpster
"I don't care what this dog would have done..
the answer to throwing a dog in a dumpster is not it," said Lindsey Pinapfel with Vegas Pet Rescue
which may have come from spending 24 hours in a dumpster."
Pinapfel believes Nevada needs stronger animal cruelty legislation
"It's a little disheartening to see that three felony counts allow you to just be able to walk free," Pinapfel said
Animal advocates are pushing for tougher penalties under "Reba's Law."
"Reba's law going forward would basically hold individuals accountable
The current law doesn't allow for harsher penalties unless the animal is actually killed," Pinapfel said
and the next day this individual was arrested."

Hector Ocaranza knew El Paso would see measles the moment it began spreading in West Texas and eastern New Mexico
Highways connect his border city with the epicenter of Texas’ massive outbreak
They’re the same roads used by thousands of families and commercial truckers who cross into Mexico and back each day
they’re going to be coming and receiving medical attention in El Paso

North America’s three biggest measles outbreaks continue to balloon
with more than 2,500 known cases; three people have died in the U.S
Canada; then took off in late January in Texas and New Mexico; and has rapidly spread in Chihuahua state
which is up to 786 cases since mid-February
These outbreaks are in areas with a notable population of certain Mennonite Christian communities who trace their migration over generations from Canada to Mexico to Seminole
Chihuahua health officials trace their first case to an 8-year-old Mennonite child who visited family in Seminole
And Ontario officials say their outbreak started at a large gathering in New Brunswick involving Mennonite communities
officials also say the genetic strains of measles spreading in Canada match the other large outbreaks

Michigan health officials said the outbreak of four cases in Montcalm County is linked to Ontario
Michigan has a 95% vaccination rate for measles

Home/Pet NewsSenior Chihuahua Instantly Turns Into a Puppy Again After Finding His Forever FamilyThis Chihuahua totally transformed
A senior Chihuahua looks forlorn while sitting on the couch
A dog's golden years have the potential to be some of the best of their lives
as long as they happen to be living with humans who view them that way
It can be so difficult to watch our dogs winding down
and getting more and more gray in the face… but at the same time
it's an opportunity to slow down a bit
and get in all the cuddles we could ever dream of
It's unfathomable that some senior dogs have to spend their last years and months in a shelter
so I really applaud those who adopt them to help them enjoy the final stage of their lives
all you have to do is watch the TikTok video below to see the way this sweet Chihuahua made a complete transformation
All he had to do was find his forever family
View directly on TikTok
In the beginning of this video that @calbear12 shared on Tuesday
we see her pup donning the famous “cone of shame” as she shares that no one had been interested in adopting him because he's a senior dog
he looks like he's getting up there in age just from the video — like a slow
The next clip shows the dog after he was brought home to his new forever family
and he's practically unrecognizable at this point
How cute is he in that clip when he's on the couch
and they're giving major props to the parents who adopted this dog
“He just needed someone to reignite that spark in him.” So true
Adopting a senior dog can often feel intimidating, and it's true that it does include more visits to the vet and other considerations that aren't necessary while caring for younger dogs — at least, not right away. But if you're willing to put in the effort, you end up making a dog just as happy as the Chihuahua above
According to what veterinarian Dr. Kurt Venator told USA Today, it's crucial during these years to pay extra close attention to even subtle changes in your dog
and to make regular vet visits so that you're able to tackle any issues that come up as early as possible
It's also a good idea to work with your vet to find food specifically geared toward senior dogs
who tend to need more protein in their diets than younger dogs do
plenty of senior dogs can act like puppies again
Home/Pet NewsSenior Chihuahua Mix's Sweet Way of Asking Foster Mom for Cuddles Has Everyone MeltingHow could anyone say no
Being a foster parent to a dog who really needs one is such a beautiful thing to do
and that's even more true when it comes to older
While younger dogs typically get snatched up from shelters and rescues very quickly (especially the puppies)
it takes longer for more elderly dogs to find their homes… and some
It can be a lot for someone to take on the medical needs these older dogs often have — not to mention the fact that they don't get to spend nearly enough of their lives with their new BFF — but unfortunately
senior dogs are usually the ones who are the least comfortable in shelter environments
One foster mom who has stepped up to be there for one (very cute) senior Chihuahua mix is sharing their journey on TikTok
she's showing us the sweet way she asks for more cuddles
View directly on TikTok
Foster mom Isabel Klee has been taking dogs in for a long time, but her latest foster might be one of her most special. She's an older Chihuahua mix pup named Pluto
and after seeing this video that Isabel shared on Sunday
I'm pretty sure it would be impossible not to fall in love with her
Isabel knows that Pluto is ready for more cuddles when she gently paws at her hand
she has to oblige — with a polite request like that
“Quitting my job so I can pet Pluto all day,” Isabel wrote in her caption
I have a feeling this little lady is extra thankful for all those pets she's getting these days
Isabel only took Pluto in last week, but she's been sharing plenty of updates on her so far
and it didn't take long for her followers to be just as head over heels for this dog as she is
As her foster mom explained in a video, Pluto found herself without a home after her human passed away
this dog must have been very loved by that person
because she has been so open and welcoming to affection now
And while they are still searching for Pluto's forever home, it's clear that she has been so wanted and loved by her foster family in the meantime. You can see it in the excitement Isabel had right before picking her up, and in how sweet she is to her now that she's all settled in.
Pluto has been through a lot (and has been suffering from pancreatitis and dental problems) but now, it seems like she's finally getting to relax. She deserves it!
