GULLIVER — Seul Choix Pointe was the “only choice” for refuge for French sailors who gave the place its name about two centuries ago
the bay it protects is dangerous in itself
with churning waters over only partially-hidden rocks
The lighthouse at the point is now automated — unless spirits are considered to be tending the beacon
Ghosthunters consider Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse to be one of the most haunted places in Michigan
The Gulliver Historical Society embraces this status and offers tours at Halloweentime
The last one of the year will the Saturday
The lighthouse and station were built in the years surrounding 1895
The grounds featured a 79-foot tower with a two-story brick house
a ranch house was built by the Coast Guard as additional living quarters
The complex has remained largely intact and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984
following the light station’s recognition as a Michigan Historical Landmark
Mueller Township was awarded a State Equity Grant to help develop the site
Repurposings have included one structure into a maritime museum
and one of the keeper’s buildings to a genealogy library
The lighthouse is operated by the Gulliver Historical Society in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division
while the land is owned by the State of Michigan
Money raised by tours and donations all goes directly into maintaining the lighthouse
The annual haunted lighthouse tours are the society’s largest fundraisers
Last Saturday was this year’s first session; this Saturday will be only other date for the event this year
Volunteers up from Traverse City spent five days working on setting up the decorations
including animatronics that are new this year
said Gulliver Historical Society President Marilyn Fischer
Entry is $10 per adult and $5 for children under 12
While the event is mostly an entertaining fundraiser
the fact remains that many ghosthunters have considered Seul Choix a paranormal hotspot
co-authored the book series “Haunted Travels of Michigan” along with her sister
The second book included a section on Gulliver
Biographies have described Tedsen as a skeptic who spends a lot of her time debunking ghost stories
She measures paranormal activity and records electronic voice phenomena (EVP) on audio
then compares her findings with historical records
According to a Detroit Free Press article published last year
after conducting over 350 paranormal investigations
named Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse as one of the top five places in Michigan with the most compelling paranormal evidence
The primary ghost people claim to see or experience at Seul Choix Pointe is that of the station’s second keeper
People have said that the benevolent spirit of the Englishman rearranges silverware if it’s set in the American fashion and smokes a cigar in the living quarters — his wife reportedly used to make him smoke outside
was of another keeper’s mother-in-law
Both Townshend and Pemble died in the house during winters
the bodies couldn’t be buried right away
the lighthouse tower walls are 20 inches thick at the base
pocketed with a 29-inch air space before a second nine-inch-thick inner wall
Some people say that the souls of those who died within never escaped
“We do have five spirits at the lighthouse,” Fischer said
Fischer has served as president of the Gulliver Historical Society for 36 years
She’s also the historian who maintains the genealogical archives on site
four of which are about the ghosts of Seul Choix Pointe
Fischer’s books are sold in the gift shop
which will be playing a film produced by the historical society
funds are going towards a roof replacement for the lighthouse tower
The estimated cost was $100,000 — a hefty price tag largely because of the copper shingles on the back side
we’re doing something new,” Fischer said
and explained that this summer’s project was to repair the well pit that had been damaged by a snow plow
She said that it took two years to raise those funds
so we’ve got to do it next year,” Fischer stated
Seul Choix Pointe’s grounds and buildings are open seasonally for visitors from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the end of September
which is unusual for an active light station
the lighthouse opens to visitors for one other event in the off-season — “Christmas from the Past,” which is always the weekend after Thanksgiving
GLADSTONE — Voters who live within the Gladstone Area Schools district will have a chance to vote today on the ..
IRON MOUNTAIN — Temperatures this summer could be a degree or two above the historical average in the Upper ..
ESCANABA — Escanaba will soon have a new activity for families as work begins to replace the former Webster ..

Only as “individual neutral athletes” should Russians participate
A small oligarchy self-confident of its worth has seized power
Prime Minister Petr Fiala admitted that the results reflected the mood of the society
A new bipolar order of speech is unfolding before our eyes
the United States is energetically recommitting to its free speech heritage
the UK and Europe are tightening the noose of censorship
This divergence is not just a policy debate—it is a fundamental split in the Western world
one that will determine whether future generations will live in freedom or under the shadow of state control
a sweeping European Union law that polices online speech for “disinformation” and other “harmful material” with unfettered authority
two irreconcilable visions are on a collision course
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez synthesized the EU’s censorious approach at the recent World Economic Forum, stating that more social media regulation is needed for the sake of “our social cohesion, our mental health, and our democracies.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took it even further:
We have freedom of speech in Europe and Germany (…) but we don’t accept it if it’s supporting extreme-right positions
This is the European model—one where governments dictate acceptable speech and criminalize dissent
The frightening reality is that tomorrow this could be any one of us
It is impossible for the West to sustain a future where one part is censored and the other remains free
Nowhere is this more evident than in the digital space
Consider the case of Billboard Chris
a Canadian father known for his viral street advocacy against gender ideology
with the support of ADF International and the Human Rights Law Alliance
he will stand trial in Australia—not for actions taken on Australian soil
Criticizing a radical WHO appointee in a 2024 post that was subsequently geo-blocked by Australia’s “E-Safety Commission”
The result of this bureaucratic body’s overreach is that a Canadian citizen must travel to Australia to defend his right to speak freely on an American-owned social media platform
Billboard Chris’ case underscores how censorship regimes are no longer confined by geography—authorities are extending their reach beyond their borders
creating a world where speech is increasingly regulated at a global scale
the DSA and its web of regulations will undoubtedly have effects far beyond Europe
As social media platforms are forced to comply with EU rules or face massive penalties
they will increasingly apply these restrictions worldwide
setting a de facto global standard for speech regulation
This means that even those in free speech jurisdictions may find themselves silenced
as platforms opt for the lowest common denominator of compliance—rather than risk significant financial or legal repercussions
The effect of the American political free speech resurgence cannot be overstated. Famously, Mark Zuckerberg has been among the first to realign, expressing regret over past censorship on Facebook. As he admitted in a stunning reversal
the platform went “too far,” and now they “want to fix that and return to that fundamental commitment to free expression”
The hope is that others read the writing on the wall and follow suit
We are living in an unprecedented era of tension within the West over this most fundamental human right
All who value freedom must recognize the stakes
And these stakes are most dire for the average person that just wants the freedom to peacefully express their views without fear of government punishment
We must side unequivocally with free speech now if we are to have any hope of closing the censorship chasm that has torn apart the West
In Le Choix, director Gilles Bourdos(of Renoir and Et après fame) delivers an introspective drama starring Vincent Lindon
an ordinary man forced to confront a situation that could turn his life upside down

in which the intimate questioning of a man faced with a decision fraught with consequences is at the heart of the plot
with its tense atmosphere and solid yet vulnerable hero
promises to plunge viewers into a reflection on responsibility
sacrifice and the weight of decisions in a man's life
Le Choix will be available on VOD for purchase and rental from March 5

The result for nearly half the country will be devastating
there was something reassuringly familiar about the rituals that election day in America would bring: long queues of voters
TV experts tapping their electoral map touchscreens and a steady flow of results from safe blue states and red states
The 2024 US presidential election has witnessed a late candidate switch, two lopsided debates, two assassination attempts, an intervention by the world’s richest man, euphoria reminiscent of Barack Obama and rhetoric evocative of Adolf Hitler
It is a campaign marked by both violence and joy
the first former president with a criminal record as well as two impeachments
That is in part because Trump has spent a decade sowing divisions of class and race
But this election has exposed a gender gulf two years after the supreme court ended the constitutional right to abortion
Democrats nominated a woman while Trump has embraced crude machismo and “bro” culture in a quest to find new voters
Both sides are utterly convinced that their side must win, that defeat would represent the end of democracy, freedom and the American way of lifeMaureen Dowd, a columnist for the New York Times, wrote: “It is the ultimate battle of the sexes in the most visceral of elections
who are appalled at the cartoonish macho posturing and benighted stances of Donald Trump and his entourage
seeing him as the reeling-backward antidote to shrinking male primacy.”
Consider this part three in the Trump trilogy
he was a brazen newcomer thumbing his nose at the political and media establishment to the glee of supporters who felt the American dream had eluded them
he was rebuked by an electorate weary of his chaos
narcissism and incompetent handling of a global pandemic
When the history of the 2024 election is written, a single week in July will be at the heart of the narrative. On 13 July, at a campaign rally in Butler
20-year-old Thomas Crooks took aim with a rifle and opened fire
injuring Trump’s ear and killing an attendee
A photo of Trump standing with blood streaked across his face as he raised his fist and shouted “Fight!” became the indelible image of his campaign
Read more of the Guardian’s 2024 US election coverage
When do polls close
Trump v Harris on key issues
What’s at stake and what else to know
Democrats needed to reclaim the narrative. At the end of that week, on 21 July, they did. Joe Biden, 81, trailing in polls and reeling from a feeble debate performance, bowed to pressure from his party and announced that he was dropping out of the race. It was, said 2016 nominee Hillary Clinton, one of the most selfless acts of patriotism that she had ever seen
Biden quickly endorsed Harris; the Clintons, the Obamas and the rest of the party followed suit. The vice-president parlayed “the politics of joy” and named a running mate
Now the Democratic national convention in Chicago felt like the happiest place on earth
hope and fun; even the state-by-state roll call became a dance party
The Trump campaign appeared wrongfooted, unable to frame Harris or find a disparaging nickname. Trump was going off the rails with a bizarre, false story that immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Springfield
pulverised him in their one and only debate in Philadelphia
she seemed to have found the long elusive antidote to Trumpism
although her struggles to distance herself from Biden gave Republicans some fodder
or a comedian at his New York rally insulted Puerto Rico
If there was an October surprise, perhaps it was tech entrepreneur Elon Musk giving away millions of dollars in a bid to help Trump in swing states
or the return of Hitler to the political stage
told how the president expressed admiration for the Nazi’s generals
formerly at the top of the military top brass
characterised Trump as “fascist to the core”
endorsed this definition about a man who asserts that undocumented immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and threatens to turn the US military against “the enemy from within”
to “turn the page” on Trump’s chaos and division
Leon Panetta
a former defence secretary and CIA director
says: “It’s a very stark choice in this election
It’s a choice between in many ways whether we abide by the constitution and the rule of law
whether we abide by a process of free and fair elections
whether we abide by the truth or whether we again make a choice to basically choose chaos over order
There’s not much doubt about it because that’s the way he operates
He operates by chaos because that’s how bullies get attention and he’s a bully
are other leaders going to allow him to do what violates the basic principles of our democracy
I just don’t think ultimately a bully like Trump will prevail.”
“Did the fascist win?” was not a question asked about any of the 59 presidential elections before this one
But as millions of people go to the polls on Tuesday
following millions more who have already voted
it is the question haunting America and the world
Moe Vela
a former senior adviser to Joe Biden when he was vice-president
says: “Every democracy in the world has to be on pins and needles and biting their nails
Not that the US was better than anybody else but the world has kind of always looked at the US as the gold standard of democracies
That it is this close to collapse and this close to being taken away from us
there can’t be any any democracy in the world right now that isn’t concerned.”
If that fate is avoided and Harris becomes the 47th president
the world will express relief that the populist tide has again been beaten back
The defining hallmark of the Trump era has been division and divisiveness: female versus male
This has been exacerbated by the echo chambers of social media
The Pew Research Center found that Democrats and Republicans are becoming more likely to view members of the other party as unintelligent, lazy, immoral or dishonest
A survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that 84% of workers agree that the current political climate causes US citizens to see each other as enemies
and 78% said they had seen people treated poorly because of their perceived political affiliation
Johnny Taylor, president and chief executive of the SHRM
that it’s going to be close so it is quite feasible that 49.9% of the population wakes up the next day pissed off that their candidate didn’t win and 50.1 are happy
It’s one thing if my sports team loses to the other team in the Super Bowl
This is so personal to people because of the topics
you think this is the end of the world if you lose.”

19/11/2024 - Vincent Lindon imposes his charisma and talent as he occupies the screen alone for the full 77 minutes of Gilles Bourdos’ remake
"you’re out of your mind." It would be an understatement to say that the various people whose telephone calls punctuate Joseph Cross’ nocturnal car journey to Paris don’t share his viewpoint on the situation he’s embarking himself and others into
But our man’s mind is made up and there’s no going back
In spite of the serious doubts which are clearly assailing him
like a tightrope walker staring into a huge precipice on a decidedly windy day
it’s primarily the narrative structure of the original movie which proved cinematographically challenging
with its lone protagonist in a car which the camera never deviates from as the story progresses in real time
stepping into the shoes of a diehard character who has made a moral decision ("I didn’t behave very well") which sees the whole of his private and professional life brought to the point of implosion
for those who haven’t seen Michel Spinosa’s French flavoured adaptation
over the course of numerous phone calls made and received by Joseph Cross in his car
which is speeding towards the capital from the gigantic building site he manages in the provinces
that: "she’s going to give birth and it’s my child"
It’s not his partner that he’s talking about - the person he slept with during a work trip the previous year is pretty much a stranger to him ("you hardly know me
where his two children are waiting to watch a football match with him
and to desert his post the day before a record-breaking concrete pour - the failure of which could cost his employer €100m - Joseph is undermining the trust people have in him
not least his wife to whom he confesses everything ("it was the first time
firstly by delegating his work to an assistant who’s terrified by this sudden responsibility
because in reality there’s far more secret
more intimate and more psychoanalytical reasoning at play here…
With its brilliantly sustained breathless pace
Cross Away unfolds through a series of mini-crises which are fuelled by telephone conversations and which the protagonist must face and resolve alone
Both a metaphor for an interconnected but lonely modern world and the tremors which can suddenly shake any ordinary soul to their core
the film successfully injects truth and humanity into the constraints of this style exercise
an achievement which owes much to Vincent Lindon whose charisma and acting maturity were clearly essential to such a gargantuan and sensitive role
Cross Away has been produced by Curiosa Films in co-production with UGC, Studio Exception and JD Prod. Newen Connect handles international sales

Ed Gaslard has been building up his backyard garden’s productivity for years
but this season’s harvest yielded something far beyond his expectations
The Port au Choix resident began his vegetable garden about seven or eight years ago
growing the standard variety of crops that tend to do well in Newfoundland and Labrador: potatoes

he noticed one of the turnips in his garden had broken through the soil surface and seemed to be larger than any of the others in the plot
he finally decided to dig up the standout turnip
not knowing the full surprise that lurked underground
but I didn’t realize that it was so big until I dug it up,” he said
his prodigious rutabaga weighed in at a whopping 22.59 pounds
He also had a great harvest of large carrots and his beets came in early
but nothing was as impressive as this tremendous turnip
Gaslard figures it’s seaweed that helps things in his garden grow
he gathers kelp from the nearby seashore and uses it to amend the soil and fertilize the garden
including adding juice from the marine vegetation throughout the growing season
he never imagined doing any of the things he does regularly would produce the prize turnip that unexpectedly burgeoned in his garden this year
Given that the rest of his turnips were average-sized
weighing in at around four or five pounds each
he figured it likely was the seed itself that carried the giant genes that found a conducive home in his garden
“It’s hard to say because I put the same amount of seed in every hole,” he said
“I really don’t know why that one grew so big
I guess this kind of thing happens from time to time.”
Gaslard has had a few friends tease him about his oversized turnip
but most people have been asking him how he grew it
but people have mostly been asking what sort of fertilizer I used,” he said
“Kelp is more natural than (store-bought) fertilizer
Use too much of that (store-bought fertilizer) and it burns up the seed
The other common question he’s been getting concerns what his plans are for the turnip
His daughter Megan Gaslard made a social media post about her dad’s garden gargantuan
noting that she’s never had a turkey that humongous
“Maybe I’ll have to stuff it for Christmas dinner,” her father joked when asked about the turnip’s fate
Gaslard said he hasn’t put a lot of thought into it yet
but figures he’ll be slicing up the turnip to make sure it is edible all the way through
Three days after his unforgettable harvest
As he added more kelp in anticipation of the next growing season
he wondered if the harvest to come might have any pleasant surprises in store
“We’ll have to wait until next year and see what goes on,” he said

We are extremely grateful to all the firefighters who worked quickly to extinguish the fire and save us further damage
We will keep everyone updated as we get any news.”
The fire broke out a day after work began at the Black Walnut site at 134 Wortley Rd

LANSING — The smell of cigar smoke lingers as visitors walk through the dark living quarters of Gulliver’s Seul Choix Point Lighthouse
They’d think someone was there because of the smell
it’s the smoking spirits that inhabit the 1895 lighthouse on the Upper Peninsula shore of Lake Michigan
the coauthor of the book series “Haunted Travels of Michigan,” has investigated over 350 potentially paranormal sites around the state.
While Tedsen is sometimes asked to investigate residences
most of her work involves logically debunking or proving a place is haunted
The Seul Choix Point Lighthouse is the only lighthouse where Tedsen found paranormal evidence that couldn’t be explained
the lighthouse is open to visitors during the summertime and offers tours
“I never really recorded or experienced anything at any lighthouse except for one
I’ve been in a lot of lighthouses — walked up way too many circular stairs,” Tedsen said
“It was the most compelling investigation I’ve done in any lighthouse.”
construction of the lighthouse was commissioned
Joseph Willie Townsend is the lighthouse’s paranormal keeper
it has been experiencing documented strange activity for decades
He had a short tenure because he died in 1910.
His cause of death isn’t conclusively known
visitors assume he died from lung disease.
Because his death occurred in harsh winter
relatives weren’t able to bury him and instead embalmed the body within the cold walls of the lighthouse cellar
His body allegedly stayed there for three weeks
and his soul is said to have stayed behind
There have been reports of things like dishes in the kitchen going askew
And there’s a mirror on the second floor that they say is a portal to the other side,” Tedsen said
Although she didn’t experience any of the lighthouse’s reputed paranormal phenomena
Tedsen said she came across something even more chilling
but what I did encounter is something nobody told us about
We found something connected to another lightkeeper — a guy by the name of William Blanchard,” she said
treatment options for cancer were scarce and Pebble grew weaker and died after a great storm hit the lighthouse in February 1919
“One of those extreme storms that come off Lake Michigan — huge winds
It twisted the trees like they were fields of wheat
The ice pellets and the snow actually broke some of the windows on the upper floor
and the floor started filling with snow,” Tedsen said
Pebble’s family wanted to take the body to the mainland but couldn’t leave or bury her outdoors because of the ice
Pebble’s relatives put her body in the first-floor bathroom to freeze
Tedsen didn’t know the history of the bathroom when she set up an audio recorder and started asking questions aloud
“I’m just asking general names like ‘what is your name
What happened to you while you were here?’ I didn’t hear anything at the time
but when I was listening to the audio later
the response was ‘Mary.’” In response to another question she replied that she “died in snow,” Tedsen said
Although she experienced many paranormal happenings in the lighthouse
Tedsen said she isn’t always convinced by what she finds
“But what that also tells me is they’ve never had a paranormal experience.”
“The minute you have a paranormal experience that first time it’s going to change your life,” she said
Paranormal happenings bring a lot of tourism to Seul Choix Point Lighthouse and other haunted attractions around Michigan
Pure Michigan promotes them as travel destinations on its website
“There are so many public ghost towns,” Tedsen said
paranormal is very important — it begs the question ‘is there life after death?’”

La Française des Jeux has announced a partnership with the Umay app to list tobacco shops as "places of refuge" for victims of street harassment
Announced on the occasion of International Women's Day
this announcement was strongly criticized by feminist organizations
who believe that tobacco bars are not safe places for women
Française des Jeux (FDJ) is seeking to promote its role as a local player
It has just formed a partnership with the mobile application Umay to reference these points of sale as possible shelters for people who are victims of street harassment
This operation is being deployed in particular in anticipation of the next Olympic Games
where millions of tourists are expected in France
The announcement of this partnership took place on March 7, 2024 in a bar-tabac in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, in the presence of Aurore Bergé, Minister responsible for Equality between Women and Men.[1]The next day
on the occasion of International Women's Day
Aurore Bergé defended this initiative on France Info
Internet users and feminist organisations have criticised this partnership and questioned the relevance of proposing tobacco shops
Amy Bah, head of the feminist collective #NousToutesLille, which has developed actions to prevent sexist and sexual violence in bars and party venues, considers this partnership, for example, to be a "feminism washing" operation on the part of the FDJ and believes that it should be examined with great caution.[2]
She recommends instead to contact the network of pharmacists
which is also very extensive and offers a wide range of opening hours
Individual reactions have also been emerging on social media
I assure you that it is not a 'safe place' for women"
The FDJ is now taking up this communication niche by relying on the tobacconist network
which remains closely linked to the tobacco industry
this involves presenting tobacconists as essential businesses
while the sale of scratch cards clearly does not meet an essential need
The operation led by the FDJ is thus helping to renormalize a declining trade that is heavily subsidized by the public authorities
without exposing the public to the sale of tobacco
To learn more about the tobacco industry's targeting of women, see our case

Near Point Riche Lighthouse at Port au Choix National Historic Site
this steel "Mother and Son" sculpture by Jim Maunder and Michael Massie commemorates Indigenous settlement in the area/Jennifer Bain
Along the windswept northwestern coast of Newfoundland where four ancient cultures once lived off the sea’s bounty, a lone caribou grazed, indifferent to my family’s delight and seemingly safe in the knowledge that it can no longer be hunted in this protected landscape. We held up a card from Port au Choix National Historic Site that warned us to stay at least three bus lengths away from this gorgeous species at risk
There was a thumb-size rectangle cut out of the cardboard
“Hold the card at arm’s length and the animal should fit within the frame,” the instructions read
We were at a respectful distance that cool July day
whose fur coat still had more white patches for winter camouflage than brown ones
wandered off along the limestone barrens in search of tasty lichens and flowering tundra plants
We also moved on down the road to find two pieces of outdoor art — a steel sculpture of a mother and son preparing a sealskin
and a steel and limestone interpretation of a Dorset Paleoeskimo house that was found nearby
its brown summer coat mixed with its white winter coat

We explored the limestone barrens looking for rare Arctic flowers
We followed coastal trails past a lighthouse and pondered a time when harp seals were hunted for food
We viewed burial grounds and the remains of ancient settlements
And we lingered in the visitor center by a life-size
replica Dorset dwelling and original artifacts like spearheads and bone needles
“We’ve got 6,000 years of history,” interpreter Eileen Rumbolt told me
we’ve got our burial site and we’ve got our beautiful walking trails
You can spend easily a day or a day and a half here in Port au Choix if you want to come and experience the site.”
The Point Riche Lighthouse stands on flower-dotted limestone barrens in Port au Choix National Historic Site/Jennifer Bain
French fishermen caught and dried fish here until 1904 but weren’t allowed to create permanent settlements
They did build communal outdoor ovens and now costumed interpreters bake in a replicated oven and serve heavenly warm buns with local jams and tea to summer visitors
Newfoundland finally joined Canada in 1949
But it’s the pre-European history of this area's original hunters and gatherers that deserves (and gets) attention at the national historic site each year between June and early October
people have been drawn to this small peninsula for its rich marine resources
The remains of four distinct cultures have been preserved because of limestone bedrock formed by the compaction of coral plant and animal remains on the bottom of what was once an ocean
Artifacts have survived thanks to the unusual alkaline soil
"Dorset Doorway" by Jim Maunder and Michael Massie is an artistic interpretation of an ancient Dorset house uncovered at nearby Phillip's Garden/Jennifer Bain
I read how the Maritime Archaic were the earliest known people to frequent the area 7,500 to 3,500 years ago
They lived off the sea and were hunters and gatherers (not farmers)
Three of their cemeteries have been uncovered here
antler and ivory tools plus weapons and ornaments
the Groswater Paleoeskimos arrived from the Arctic — possibly as the climate cooled — to hunt seals on the ice close to shore every spring
ivory and antler harpoon heads have only been found here
They set up seasonal camps at Phillip’s Garden
near where seal hunters still take off by boat
an ancient Maritime Archaic burial site is protected by Parks Canada and now called the "Gathering Circle"/Jennifer Bain
another Arctic Paleoeskimo culture that created what appears to be a more permanent settlement from 2,000 to 1,300 years ago at Phillip’s Garden
It’s one of Canada's richest Dorset sites with at least 50 house depressions and thousands of artifacts
Dorset hunters walked out on the ice to catch their prey
and so much seal oil has remained in the ground that archaeologists say that the soil still feels greasy
Finally I read how the Beothuk and other more recent Indigenous Peoples lived in the area from 2,000 to 300 years ago
drawing on resources from both the sea and land
and camping in sheltered coves around the present-day town instead of the exposed coast of Phillip's Garden
Inside the visitor center at Port au Choix National Historic Site
interpreter Audrey Rumbolt shows a reconstructed Dorset house/Jennifer Bain
“These people had the spiritual belief that if you killed an animal
and you would take a bone and carve something with the belief that you were giving respect to that animal,” said Rumbolt as she pointed out cases full of tools
“And the next time you went hunting that spirit would return and you would have another successful hunt.”

Six thousand years of history is tough to absorb in one go

One shuttered exhibit noted that the Maritime Archaic sacred burial ground was excavated by archaeologists during the late 1960s

"Out of respect for the wishes of the Indigenous peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador and in the spirit of Reconciliation we have now concealed the objects from public view." The historic site is no longer allowed to show its short film to visitors and it awaits a new
Outside the visitor center — not far from where that lone caribou foraged so innocently — I cleared my head by walking in the footsteps of the ancient hunters and gatherers along three hiking trails
What stood out was the "tuckamore," dense stands of fir and spruce that survive in exposed areas and are stunted and deformed by the ferocious winds
I wandered the limestone barrens and rugged coastline
finding the showy Yellow Lady's Slipper orchid but not the endangered Fernald’s Braya
Vibrant blue oysterplants and cheerful yellow roseroots — both beloved by foragers — were colorful consolation prizes as I scrambled over rocks to the Point Riche Lighthouse
Newfoundlanders call these exposed and stunted coastal tree
I came across two more steel sculptures celebrating the area's rich Indigenous heritage
The first depicted two hunters pulling a seal
The second was a kayaker firmly gripping a paddle in one hand and a harpoon in the other
at a small and sacred piece of land protected by Parks Canada
it's where the Maritime Archaic once buried their dead in elaborately furnished graves with limestone markers

El Rey del Mundo released the Choix de L’Epoque
which honestly seems a bit pretentious to me in retrospect
an Edición Regional exclusively distributed by Hunters & Frankau
There were 2,000 dress boxes of 25 produced
and is the smallest of the 20 Regional Edition cigars released in 2009
Here is a photo of it next to an Opus X Pussycat
The cigar itself is a 4 1/3 x 52 petit robusto, a size I have come to like quite a bit despite my disdain for most large ring gauge cigars, with a light to medium brown wrapper that smells of sweetish hay. It is obviously well-rolled with a great triple cap and very few veins showing.
The Choix de L´Epoque starts off fairly mild, and the dominant flavors are hay, cedar and a bit of honey, but almost no spice or pepper at all until the end, and then just the faintest trace. A very smooth cigar overall and the sweetness in the cigar also increased from the beginning to the end, but was never more than a bit player in the total package.
The draw is a bit loose for the entire smoke, but nothing too horrible. However, the burn is annoyingly erratic, great one moment, crap the next. The final smoking time is an hour and five minute.

We discussed four books over the semester:
Our goal as a group was not only to have meaningful conversations about each book but to send a TMU student delegate in a panel discussion with other students from English-speaking universities across Canada to act as a jury and decide which book out of the four would be Canada’s Goncourt “choice” (hence

In the summer and autumn of 2022, there was much discussion about finding an “off-ramp” to allow Russia’s president
a face-saving way out of an unwinnable war
as Ukraine heads into the third year of defending itself against Russia’s aggression
the suggestion persists – but increasingly
Ukraine’s prospects, after two years of a gruelling war that have taken an enormous human toll, are uncertain. Its population losses, both in terms of battlefield casualties and the flood of emigration that followed the invasion, will be difficult to remedy, and could have crippling consequences for Ukraine’s already struggling economy
this perception is only shared by two G7 members
Ukraine is not the only crisis demanding the attention of the collective west
The war in Gaza and wider conflagration across the Middle East is
But there are numerous other flashpoints that often fail to grab global news headlines
Against this background, the war in Ukraine has become a major and increasingly costly distraction. Many leaders – in Europe in particular – are worried
about a return of Donald Trump to the White House and the possible end of a meaningful transatlantic alliance
there is a fear that a continuation of the war in Ukraine could expose Europe even more to Russian aggression than is already the case
A Ukrainian defeat would be a dangerous humiliation for the west. In light of the continuing rhetoric about the west’s “iron-clad commitment” to a just peace for Ukraine
a Russian victory would accelerate the decline of the current international order
It would usher in a drawn-out transition period to something far less favourable – and not just to western interests
A return to the bloc confrontation of the cold war – but with a probably stronger Chinese-led alliance with Russia
Iran and North Korea facing off against a weakening and less united western alliance – would leave little room to address problems such as climate change and food security
This should also be a warning to those in the global south who think they have little
Searching for an off-ramp does not mean letting Putin win. It means enabling Ukraine to defend the areas currently still under its control. This will require more western aid, but also serious consideration of negotiating a ceasefire. An end to the fighting would buy western Europe and Ukraine time to build up stronger domestic defence capabilities
Reassessing current realities on the battlefield in this way will undoubtedly be seen as appeasement by some. But a more fitting analogy might be that of West Germany in 1949 and, even more so, of South Korea in 1953
both of which needed to establish internationally recognised borders in order to establish sovereignty in the face of hostile neighbouring powers
The challenge for Ukraine and its western partners is to establish the equivalent of the Korean peninsula’s 38th parallel
short of the west seriously doubling down on military support for Kyiv
is a slow and agonising defeat on the battlefield
with far-reaching consequences beyond Ukraine
now have legal access to telemedicine abortion from a doctor within their state.
These startups are revolutionizing abortion care by offering quick
Approved by the FDA for use during the first 10 weeks of gestation, medication abortion uses two types of pills:
medication abortion accounts for 60 percent of abortions performed up to 10 weeks gestation in 2017
having increased significantly in the last few years
The non-profit Just The Pill opened for business on October 12, offering telemedicine abortion care to people in Minnesota. Choix opened on October 28
offering abortion care to people aged sixteen and over in California
Just the Pill and Choix are fully virtual abortion clinics. The non-profit carafem, which had previously offered in-person abortion care, now offers telemedicine abortion care to people living in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia. A new digital abortion provider, Hey Jane
At Just the Pill, patients fill out an online form and then have a follow-up phone call with a patient educator and a doctor, who then mails the pills to eligible patients. There are follow-up phone calls at seven days and four weeks. Just the Pill has a feminist fee structure, with a sliding scale from $0-$350 (they don’t take insurance). The difference is made up by the Minnesota abortion fund, Our Justice
According to Medical Director Dr. Julie Amaon
Just the Pill formed to serve people in rural Minnesota who live far from the state’s five abortion clinics
they have seen about thirty patients so far
“Most of our patients live more than 100 miles from the nearest clinic,” says Dr
“Ninety-seven percent of counties in Minnesota do not have an abortion provider
people are having to sometimes drive three or four hours for services
That’s tough when you have kids at home and you’re trying to look for childcare.”
“This is a very safe early option—that you can have a telemedicine appointment with a doctor in the comfort of your home and you get something mailed to your home
“Women know how to take care of their bodies
People have been doing this for centuries on their own
To have that ability to be able to take care of yourself at home
And it should continue to be an option for women.”
Just the Pill offers translation services and is now working to expand their services into Montana
which supports a sliding scale payment mechanism right on the Choix website that ensures equity of access for all
they had both worked as clinicians in a primary care practice
but they wanted to be able to provide a different type of care
“We wanted to expand access to folks who have limited access,” said Adam
“We really wanted to help revolutionize abortion care
We are both really passionate about sexual reproductive health care.”
“The big push in the abortion world is to normalize abortion
Abortion is part of normal reproductive health,” says Dr
the collaborating physician at Choix. “This is something that I think we need to shout from the rooftops.”
“Abortion is a totally normal part of your reproductive health care
Having a pregnancy that you no longer want to continue is for some people
a very huge grave decision and for other people it’s not a big deal,” says Dubey
“People coming to our platform can come with pride or with shame—whatever their own feelings are
we will treat everybody with dignity and respect. We want people to feel like we’re their partners in their reproductive future

Telemedicine makes abortion accessible for people in rural areas
but it also makes abortion access faster and more convenient for people living in urban areas
“In rural parts of California and urban parts of California
“Whether it’s an access issue or whether it’s because the appointments are all booked up in urban areas.”
Clinic-based medication abortion care is often time-consuming and costly, says Dr. Wagner. Clinics are crowded, appointments can take several hours, and providers often insist on an in-person follow-up appointment. Many clinics conduct ultrasounds and blood tests, which is no longer the standard of care and makes abortion care more expensive
“Some people may not have the time and money to go to a clinic and pay the higher cost associated with a medicalized abortion and take the hours of time,” says Dr
can be scheduled quickly and happen wherever you are
And virtual abortion clinics can provide eligible patients care right away
“You usually can’t proceed until there’s a pregnancy seen on ultrasound
you’re not going to see anything on the ultrasound and therefore you’re going to be turned away
if you realize your period is two days late
you take a pregnancy test and your pregnancy test is positive
you can zoom online right away and we can get this taken care of.”
Online abortion care also allows women seeking abortion care to avoid protesters at clinics and maintain more privacy than in-clinic care at traditional abortion clinics
“Even though you know you’re going somewhere that’s supportive
you’re telling your story to a lot of people,” says Dr
I think people feel obligated to explain why they’re there
It’s just emotionally easier to do this at home on your own time.”
carafem has run health centers offering in-person abortion care in several states since 2015
They are now also offering telemedicine abortion care to approximately fifty clients a week in Georgia
‘de-medicalize’ and remove the social stigma from the provision of birth control and early abortion care.”
“We as a country in many places have decreased the availability to receive abortion care easily,” Grant told Ms
“If a woman wants to receive abortion care
it’s not unusual for her to have to find a way to travel hundreds of miles to a physician that she may have never seen before and will never see again
For a medical procedure that is this simple and easy to provide
carafem offers online, video visits for medication abortion
They provide a secure text messaging platform with a virtual assistant
who can connect patients with staff if needed 24×7
and includes a follow-up check-in within 48 hours and confirmation of a negative pregnancy test at 30 days
including Medicaid in Illinois and Maryland
“The potential for democratizing abortion access through these platforms is promising,” says Morgan Love, co-founder of the new digital mutual-aid abortion fund, Reprocare
“But it is imperative that this not become an ‘elite’ option
available only for those who can afford to pay out of pocket or have a strong personal network of support from which to draw.”
“Reprocare offers a robust financial support platform designed to shift how abortion funding is achieved and perceived,” says Morgan
The platform provides a sliding scale payment mechanism that ensures equity of access for all
and plan to offer their services soon through Hey Jane (slated to begin offering services in January).
“We were really excited to learn about the prospect of having medication abortion be accessible via the telehealth platforms,” Reprocare co-founder Phoebe Abramowitz told Ms
“But we knew that for it to be truly accessible
it would need to be financially accessible
So we were really glad to be able to partner with these different organizations to support a sliding scale
and be sure that remotely accessible medication abortion isn’t like a boutique early option and actually does expand to the people who need it the most.”
Reprocare also offers peer-based support for people during a medication abortion through their Healthline
“We provide emotional support and medical information for people planning abortion with pills at home,” Love told Ms
“We support the abortion-at-home model and make sure that folks who are having an abortion have peer-based support.”
“We offer culturally congruent care because folks have the right to be supported by people who have a lived experience that resembles theirs,” says Love
Reprocare supports all callers, without asking for personally identifiable health information
All of this was made possible by a federal court decision last July. Because of the pandemic, U.S. District Court Judge Theodore Chuang in Maryland temporarily suspended an FDA restriction on the distribution of the abortion pill
Many doctors had interpreted the FDA restriction to require an in-person visit for patients to receive abortion pills
Judge Chuang’s order allowed patients to receive mifepristone from their doctors through the mail during the pandemic after a telemedicine appointment
It also allowed certified providers to contract with mail order pharmacies to dispense the abortion pill
offering overnight delivery and taking most insurance plans
The organization Plan C, which advocates for expanded access to medication abortion, has just rolled out a comprehensive new website with information for medical professionals and patients
other avenues to access abortion pills include the TelAbortion research study and the overseas organization Aid Access
D.C.; Minnesota; Montana; New Mexico; New York; Oregon and Washington
From outside of the United States, the organization Aid Access has U.S.-based physicians providing telemedicine abortion service in New York
In states that do not yet have telemedicine abortion services
evidence indicates that people are obtaining the abortion pill by other means
Aid Access serves people in all 50 states, offering online consultations and shipping of the abortion pill from abroad for a sliding scale fee as low as $95
Finally, Wells says that research indicates that some people are using mail forwarding services such as iPostal1.com or Anytime Mailbox to rent an “address” in state that have legal online abortion services
then doing an online consultation at a digital abortion clinic and listing the forwarding service address as the shipping address
they confirm they are in that state at the time of the consultation (since the services are only allowed to serve people in those states)… When the mail forwarding service tells them that a package has arrived at their ‘address,’ they ask for it to be forwarded to them at their home address.”
The problem with this option is that it may jeopardize the health providers
who are only allowed to serve people within the states in which they are licensed.
Kirsten Moore, director of the Expanding Medication Abortion Access (EMAA) Project
that her organization plans to make a “first day ask” of the Biden administration requesting that the FDA review their abortion pill restrictions
clinic or hospital registered with the drug manufacturer
Many interpret the REMS to block the use of telemedicine for medication abortion using mifepristone
about whether the FDA restrictions on the abortion pill in fact require medical professionals to dispense the medication in-person and some clinicians were already mailing pills before the judge’s injunction
The FDA wording says pills must be “dispensed in a clinic…” but do not explicitly say that the medication must be handed to the patient in person
Co-founder of Plan C Elisa Wells believes the language is open to interpretation and that the new telemedicine abortion services will challenge the restriction if the injunction expires. Moore believes that the FDA requires that certified providers dispense the pills to patients in person so she is fighting to have this restriction removed
“These restrictions place more of a burden than a benefit on providers and their patients,” says Moore
citing the FDA standard for imposing the REMS restriction
“Based on opinion research we conducted last year
people like the idea that women have access to an option for ending an early pregnancy,” says Moore
“And they like the idea that it’s an FDA-approved drug that’s been around for twenty years
We think it’s time to revisit these restrictions and move forward.”
Advocates, health care providers and policymakers are challenging the REMS restriction in court and lobbying the FDA to remove the restriction
On March 30, twenty-one state attorneys general sent a letter to the FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn
demanding the FDA remove the REMS restriction
On April 14, Senators Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) sent their own letter asking the FDA to lift the restriction during the pandemic.
On June 16, a group of 109 lawmakers, led by U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) sent a letter urging the FDA to permanently ease the dispensing restrictions on mifepristone
Telemedicine abortion care is revolutionizing abortion health care by significantly expanding abortion access in the United States
The pandemic has opened a door that will hard to close back up
they are unlikely to go quietly back to the old days of cumbersome
time-consuming and expensive abortion health care
People creating new telemedicine startups repeatedly emphasize the need to increase access to abortion health care
especially for people living in rural areas or in places without abortion clinics
“We’ve been trying to fight for a long time to say abortion should remain legal,” says Grant of carafem
“But it’s equally important in the places where it’s legal to make sure it’s accessible
whether it’s legal or not doesn’t really matter
and are stuck without anyone that’s going to be supportive of your decision
then you effectively still have no choice even though it is legal in your state.”

Notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero – the convicted murderer of United States DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena – has been arrested in northern Mexico
Unnamed officials cited by the newspaper Milenio said that Caro Quintero – founder of the now-defunct Guadalajara Cartel – was captured by marines and federal agents in the municipality of Choix
But a Reforma newspaper report said he was detained in Guachochi, a municipality in the Sierra Tarahumara region of Chihuahua, where authorities are currently conducting an extensive manhunt for an accused murderer
No shots were fired in the arrest of the 69-year-old trafficker
Caro Quintero spent 28 years in jail for the 1985 murder of Camarena before his 40-year sentence was cut short in 2013 after it was ruled that he was improperly tried in a federal court when the case should have been heard at the state level
The Supreme Court later upheld the 40-year sentence
After his release, he allegedly returned to the drug underworld as the leader of the Caborca Cartel in Sonora
The FBI added Caro Quintero to its 10-most-wanted list in April 2018
placing new pressure on Mexico to capture him
However, President López Obrador, who took office in December 2018, has demonstrated scant interest in detaining drug lords, and even ordered the release of one of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s sons after he was arrested in Culiacán
Caro Quintero – who was found to have ordered the kidnapping of Camarena in Guadalajara before torturing and killing him – was a major supplier of narcotics to the United States in the late 1970s and early ’80s
He blamed “Kiki” for a 1984 raid on a marijuana plantation
The murder of the DEA agent negatively affected Mexico-U.S
The security forces who detained Caro Quintero – apparently on Friday – were acting on two valid arrest warrants
The drug lord is also the subject of an extradition order in the United States
where authorities had offered US $20 million for information leading to his capture
The apprehension of Caro Quintero is probably the highest-profile arrest of a criminal in Mexico since “El Chapo” was recaptured in Los Mochis

Forensic testing has confirmed that a body found in Sinaloa is that of a man accused of killing two priests
a tour guide and another man last June in Chihuahua
as well as a United States citizen in 2018
President López Obrador delivered the news Thursday morning
announcing that authorities had established that the body belonged to José Noriel “El Chueco” Portillo Gil
a presumed leader of a Sinaloa Cartel-affiliated criminal cell called Gente Nueva (New People)
Portillo, whose nickname means “the crooked one,” allegedly killed two elderly Jesuit priests
and 22-year-old local baseball player Paul Oswaldo Berrelleza in the municipality of Urique on June 20
He was also accused of murdering American teacher Patrick Braxton-Andrew in October 2018
The state’s current attorney general
said Wednesday that a sister of Portillo had identified her brother’s body
but he stressed that authorities were waiting for the results of forensic testing in Sinaloa for confirmation that it was in fact him
and 16 spent bullet casings were found in the area
Authorities believe Portillo may have been killed late last week by local residents who dumped his body in the location where it was found
The Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office had offered a 5-million-peso (about US $270,000) reward for information leading to his capture
while Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos pledged that justice would be served
The murders of the priests caused “deep anger
indignation and pain” and “shook us to the very core,” Campos said last June
“We’re not going to allow acts like this
To the Jesuits and all Chihuahua residents I say: you have the state government and the federal government [to protect you]
You have the force of the state that will protect you against those who disrupt our peace and take away the most precious thing we have
In a statement posted to its website on Wednesday
said it “regretted the death of the person whose body was found by Sinaloa authorities
as we regret all lives cut short by the violence that reigns in the country.”
“We reject the dissemination of images… [showing] the discovery,” the association said
adding that if the body is confirmed to be that of “the person implicated in the homicide of the Jesuit priests,” the discovery can in no way be considered “a triumph of justice or a solution to the structural violence problem in the Sierra Tarahumara,” a region named after the indigenous people who live there
the absence of a legal process in accordance with the law in relation to the homicides would imply a failure of the Mexican state to comply with its basic duties and [would] confirm that authorities don’t have territorial control in the region,” the association said
The murder of the priests sparked outrage in Mexico
and even triggered a response from Pope Francis
“I express my pain and consternation due to the murder in Mexico … of two Jesuit priests and a layman
So many murders in Mexico!” the pope said in a post on his official Twitter account last June
Mexico’s Roman Catholic Multimedia Center said after the murders that seven priests had been killed since López Obrador took office in December 2018
At least two dozen were murdered during the 2012–18 term of the government led by former president Enrique Peña Nieto
According to a Milenio newspaper report published last July, Chihuahua authorities established that Urique municipal police were complicit with Portillo’s criminal activities
That complicity appeared to have been facilitated by El Chueco’s uncle
who was the municipal police director in Cerocahui
the Urique town where the murders occurred last June
In late July, Chihuahua authorities said that Portillo controlled the beer market in some Sierra Tarahumara communities
State Security Minister Gilberto Loya told Milenio that “clandestine” beer sales helped finance El Chueco’s criminal group
while then attorney general Fierro said his monopolization of that market in some towns was indicative of the criminal power he had
President López Obrador said that Portillo and his criminal activities were “tolerated” by authorities in Urique
whose municipal seat is at the bottom of a canyon that is part of the Barrancas del Cobre
a popular tourism destination known in English as the Copper Canyon
“He was even a promoter of a baseball team
The local authorities … knew [about his criminal activities] but didn’t do anything
That’s the truth,” the president said
adding that Portillo had a criminal network in the entire region
Thirty-two people linked to Portillo’s criminal group have been arrested
“… We’ve acted responsibly .
and the Ministry of Defense … has been working [in the Tarahumara Sierra] permanently,” he said

DeVos’s appointment threatens the integrity of public education that still remains
are part of the privatization movement that seeks to dismantle public education by turning it over to for-profit corporations
Privatization skeptics and advocates alike overlook the historical nuances of the prospective administration’s support of vouchers
and other school-choice reforms that remove schools from public oversight
An analysis of American history indicates that the use of private means was a critical aspect to ensure quality education for African Americans legally excluded from access to public institutions
The volatile role that privatization played in race relations is noteworthy because it underpinned the establishment of schools for students of color while it also informed the creation of alternatives to desegregation and the Republican narrative on the failure of public schools
American history clearly demonstrates that communities of color have been forced to rely upon themselves to provide an education to as many students as possible. Students of color have rarely been provided a quality public education. As James Anderson demonstrated in Education of Blacks in the South, 1860-1935
black communities consistently had to provide their own schools by taxing themselves beyond what the law required
as white officials never appropriated public money equitably by race
Black civic leaders and educators had to forge alliances with philanthropists and “progressive” whites for further financial support
were forced to rely upon private means to meet the educational needs of their own children
African Americans established schools controlled by the community
Such “community-controlled schools” were by necessity administered by African Americans
These schools matched the aspirations of a population that viewed education as an entreé into the upper echelons of professional society as well the means to inculcate vocational skills that led to employment in a changing economy
Black civic leaders established secondary schools that educated the masses and prepared students of color to live in and challenge an inherently unequal society
Alabama; the Avery Normal Institute in Charleston
South Carolina; Lanier High School in Jackson
Mississippi; and McKinley High School in Baton Rouge
were among the premier institutions that prepared thousands of students within and by the black community
and scores of other historically black colleges and universities became politically contested sites as they navigated difficult terrain with local and state school officials and white philanthropists to keep their schools open
Such schools were sometimes known as “Freedom Schools,” devoted in part to challenging institutional racism and preparing students to enter a violently hostile and segregated society. As the education scholar Vanessa Siddle Walker noted in her book Their Highest Potential
these schools hired well-educated and polished professionals who lived in the community they taught
and fashioned a curriculum grounded in the interests of the families they served
black educators formed their own professional associations
white families used privatization for different purposes after the historic Brown v
Faced with the prospect of attending school with black children
white families and supportive lawmakers began to adopt “freedom of choice” plans
Black and Latino families had the choice to enroll in public schools across the South by the 1960s
but the onus fell squarely upon families of color to enroll in white schools
The rates of desegregation were consequently negligible without federal protection or guidelines
advocated abolishing the Department of Education
which his administration declaring that public schools put our “nation at risk.” In this way
“the Great Communicator” cultivated a narrative of failure for public schools
which expedited national divestment in public education and hastened white flight
Privatization and school choice thus emerged as a viable alternative to those with the means to escape the perils of public education
the most recent instance of federal support for privatizing education is found in the Every Student Succeeds Act
the education law that replaced No Child Left Behind
Passed in the twilight of President Obama’s administration
the act significantly reduced the power of the federal Department of Education and increased funding for private governance of public schools through charter schools
one aspect of President Obama’s legacy that will be preserved is his facilitation of school choice by entrusting the provision of public education to private entities such as charters
Ongoing privatization under Betsy DeVos and the Trump administration therefore represents a continuation of policy since the Brown decision in 1954
implies that the federal government is scaling back oversight
which could allow negligent funding disparities and civil-rights violations to exist
which will likely perpetuate discrimination
is not unlike the bygone era that supported legal disenfranchisement
Education history suggests that current privatization or charter-school laws allow for communities to regain control of public schools much like civic leaders were forced to do during the era of segregation. Indeed, the Movement for Black Lives recently included “community control” in a comprehensive platform
which included the call for “real community control by parents
and community members of schools including democratic school boards and community control of curriculum
and discipline policies.” This draws upon the history of black educators who have utilized private means at their disposal and public funding when available to teach their own children
families of color are free as “private” entities
to control their own schools with public support
In the post-election reality marked with clear indications that the federal government will not intervene in local affairs
an intervention that was particularly useful during the black Southern freedom struggle
families faced with a lack of education opportunity can still engage at the local level to govern their own schools
In the hands of families who need a quality education
privately operated schools wouldn’t be charter schools or private schools
but community-controlled schools that connect to a longer history of self-determination
It is instead a call that more accurately resembles the movement for community-controlled schools observed during the long history to secure a quality education through self-determination
the next four years may prove to be a civil-rights struggle for self-determination that transforms how public education is governed at the local level
Potentially a movement by and for people of color
the overlooked call for self-determination from those subjected to failing schools could provide impetus to new forms of resistance

“Lucky” might just describe Usman Ihtsham
an editor from WhatIfGaming who had a quick chance to talk with Hideo Kojima at Gamescom
When asked about whether the game would be first or third person perspective
Development is cycling between either allowing players to choose to play the whole game in first-person or third-person
or keeping it fix4ed third person and having some first-person only
The game will not be out more than likely 2016
Kojima also fielded a question regarding whether the game would be linear
All I can say is Fox Engine is meant for open world
I cannot discuss more on the game design itself in detail yet
This story can’t be confirmed at the moment
but it wouldn’t be the first time that Silent Hill tinkered with the perspective
The Room was first-person inside the apartment
Seeing as how PT made my head spin for all the right and all the wrong reasons I’d be happy with a third-person perspective
