While First Stage's recently opened world-premiere production is based on a popular historical novel for youth this hopeful story about Mexican immigrants couldn't be more timely Adapted by Alvaro Saar Rios from Pam Muñoz Ryan's novel, "Esperanza Rising" is the story of a pampered landowner's daughter who is suddenly forced to start over at the bottom as a migrant farmworker in the United States during the Great Depression but she earns that hope by learning from her failures and conflicts First Stage's children's roles are double cast After her father is killed and a malevolent uncle threatens her family Esperanza and her Mama (Ashley Marie Rodriguez) flee to California with their former teenage hired hand Miguel (Thomas Alberto Bastardo) and his father (David Flores) The cossetted Esperanza has to learn the simplest tasks while renegotiating her relationship with the gentle Miguel plucky new friend Isabel (Aria Martinez) also helps Mama gets sick working in the fields and needs a long recuperation so Esperanza ends up picking fruit and vegetables She learns about workers' plans to strike for better conditions and pay through unpleasant encounters with Marta (Erin E The play is evenhanded in discussing why some workers want to strike and why others would be afraid to (and how the agriculture industry depends on migrant labor) Esperanza and Marta eventually come to regard each other more compassionately This play is also straightforward in presenting the racism these characters faced strong female role models in Rodriguez's Mama and in Abuelita and Hortensia but they persist through them and find solutions Rios cleverly uses two young storytellers (Lucia Harris and Eleanor Dysart) as narrators who also fill in as incidental characters and leaven the play with touches of humor Michelle Lopez-Rios directed this production which has evocative original music by Dinorah Márquez Abadiano the founder and director of the Latino Arts Strings Program First Stage recommends this production for people 7 and older While death and jeopardy are discussed early in the show "Esperanza Rising" does move quickly though a number of plot points So keep in mind the concentration level needed to follow a story like that First Stage performs "Esperanza Rising" through May 18 at the Marcus Performing Arts Center's Todd Wehr Theater, 929 N. Stage Ballet Folklorico Nueva Antequera and Mixantena de Santa Cecilia parade at Jazz Fest Son Rompe Pera performs in the Cultural Exchange Pavilion Jazz Fest's Cultural Exchange Pavilion had a variety of Mexican music Saturday from harmonizing sisters Laura and Celia García of Las Hermanas García to the punk rock cumbia of Mexico City's Son Rompe Pera There also were several cultural displays swirling about the tent and grounds and international sounds filled the tent and stretched to other stages Calpulli Tonalequeh preserve Aztec culture and traditions particularly dance and traditional outfits though the Aztec culture dates back well before the arrival of Spanish colonists Members of the group lit tree sap that burned like incense blew on a large white conch shell and drummed on a wooden teponaztli and a huehuetl drum with the Aztec serpent god Quetzalcoatl on it Dancers in tall feather headdresses danced in a circle though more in a demonstration of cultural practices than a specific ritual It was a good prelude to the tent's lineup the men of Staku Guaguas performed a sort of ritual on what looks like a mini-ferris wheel Six men each climbed on to a pole sticking out like a spoke from the central axis By alternately stretching out or squatting down they create a sort of perpetual motion machine Mariachi Los Camperos offered the more familiar sounds of traditional mariachi music The group also is full of very talented singers and as noted by longtime Gambit contributor Ken Korman they performed on Linda Ronstadt's 1987 Mexican folk music album the Mexican Institute of Sound performed in both the tent and on the Congo Square Stage The band is part of a growing Mexican electronic music scene DJ and producer Camilo Lara leads the group Lara wore a black T-shirt with "Mexico Anti-Fascista" written on it and he spent his energy getting the crowd dancing as on the song "Stop!" The band played songs including "Alocatel," "El Jefe," "Mexico" and "Es Toy." like 'Escribeme Pronto." It means "write to me soon," and Lara said it meant "send me a text." There was a dance video vibe to "Digo Baile," and Lara rapped on songs like "El Microfono." On the Jazz & Heritage Stage and also in the Cultural Exchange Pavilion Benin International Musical fused new sounds and traditional ones grounded in the country's Vodou culture The band is fronted by aggressive guitar work but the sounds are dominated by polyrhythms coming from the bassist and two drum kits and singer Akpeedje Brigitte Kiti also raps some Mexico City's Son Rompe Pera returned to Jazz Fest after performing here last year The group is essentially a marimba-led punk rock band that often uses cumbia beats They had the Pavilion tent rocking and looked like they were about to do what likely would have been the tent's first stage dive They settled for yelling a few choruses of Ramones-esque "Hey ho one heavily tattooed member hoisted the marimba above his head Nicholas Payton led a trio including the stellar Esperanza Spalding and Detroit drummer Karriem Riggins soloing on stand-up base in the long first piece "Feed the Fire," and singing beautifully on several songs "Feed the Fire" was written by pianist and composer Geri Allen, who died in 2017. It was one of two compositions by Allen, and Payton wore a shirt with her likeness on it. The other was "Unconditional Love," which Payton said was "something we can use a lot more of these days." (Payton was recently ousted from his position as chair of the brass department at the Berklee College of Music following a change.org petition accusing him of antisemitism Payton disputes that claim and didn't address it onstage.)   Most of the rest of the set featured compositions by Payton which he employed for several impressive solo highlights The group did his song "Let It Ride," and Spalding handled the vocals They also did a soft and beautiful version of "Ultra Violet" from Payton's 2019 "Light Wave Suite." The group also performed "Gold Dust Black Magic," which Payton composed for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Both Payton and Spalding sang on "Jazz is a Four Letter Word." The band was even a little playful on the final piece reiterating Payton's term "BAM," or "Black American Music." Payton got the crowd on its feet repeating "BAM is Black American Music" in ever decreasing volume Las Hermanas Garcia and Mariachi Los Camperos all perform again Sunday Esperanza Spalding and Karriem I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy was among two Filipino nursing aides charged with aggravated assault following an incident at the Crystal Lake Rehabilitation Facility in Berkeley Township According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office were identified as responsible for an altercation with a 52-year-old male patient Authorities reported that Francisco was apprehended at the facility Both were initially held at Ocean County Jail with the patient transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center Francisco and Esperanza claimed they acted in self-defense asserting that the patient became aggressive after being reprimanded for smoking and attacked them first argued that racial bias and workplace discrimination played a role in the incident and their subsequent detention.  Francisco was taken into ICE custody due to his immigration status Esperanza chose voluntary deportation and returned to the Philippines in late January this year after nearly three months in custody remained in ICE detention for the next seven months until his deportation was confirmed earlier this week through the Philippine Consulate General in New York provided legal assistance to both individuals The Consulate approved $10,000 from the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Legal Assistance Fund to help cover their legal expenses Vice Consul Paolo Mapula told TheFilAm.net that disbursing the funds was subject to strict government rules “We called the meeting to look for a way to disburse the check for $10,000 taken from the Legal Assistance Fund of the DFA…but we cannot disburse it to anybody other than the beneficiaries for obvious government auditing reasons.” Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega clarified that the funds could not be released to Francisco while he was in custody “The DFA disbursed cash from the Legal Assistance Fund for incurred and anticipated legal expenses for the criminal case the amount could not be released to him.” including Migrante New Jersey and Tanggol Migrante criticized the Philippine government for delays and alleged inaction They argued that the funds should have been released directly to the families or supporters of Francisco and Esperanza and accused the Consulate of neglecting Filipino migrants in distress “Throughout the entire removal process the Philippine consulate never lifted a finger.” The Philippine Embassy and consulates responded to these criticisms emphasizing their ongoing efforts to assist detained Filipino nationals “The Philippine Embassy and Consulates General have been extending appropriate consular assistance to detained Filipino nationals to ensure they are being treated according to the law and that their well-being is protected,” they said in a statement The Philippine Consulate General in New York confirmed to Inquirer.net USA that Francisco’s return to the Philippines was the result of coordinated efforts with US immigration authorities and stressed their ongoing commitment to protecting Filipino workers abroad Regarding Tanggol Migrante’s claim that Francisco only received $200 of the $10,000 ATN funds promised by the Consulate officials clarified that the funds intended for distressed Filipino nationals – who were unable to access them – are managed differently.  “The funds these groups were after were intended for distressed Filipino nationals who were unable to receive the funds themselves,” according to the statement from the Consulate “Since the authority to disburse the funds rests with the Department of Foreign Affairs pursuant to existing Philippine regulations the concerned Filipinos can now deal directly with the Department of Foreign Affairs as they are now both in the Philippines.” has consistently maintained an open line of communication with Filipino community leaders “willing to engage in genuine and meaningful dialogue.” The Consulate said it considers its mandate to protect the welfare of Filipino nationals within its jurisdiction “a sacred responsibility” and that it “works quietly steadily and effectively – away from the glare of curious eyes.” We use cookies to enhance your experience. heaven one day You don't have permission to access this resource THE 5TH with The New York Philharmonic is out now it’s comforting to consider how universal that overwhelming sense of blah is brought to you by our producer Megan Lubin When Megan hit an especially low point earlier this year she noticed something in the music she was listening to: Über-popular artists making explicit references to the state of their mental health and the things they do to cope with it It made her want to know more about the impact of those lyrics so she dug around and found an academic who studies that very thing: Alex Kresovich candidate at the University of North Carolina’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media who has authored a bunch of studies on mental health and popular music we walk through one of those studies with him and learn how influential lyrical content can be — even when you’re not paying super-close attention opens up the possibility that pop artists are an underestimated asset when it comes to mental-health messaging “People like to point at pop music as a source of problems Alex sees his job as guiding the scientific community toward new data that could change how we understand the value of pop-music lyrics — “laying the railroad ties,” as he puts it we talk to an artist who has taken the concept of music as medicine to a whole new level Esperanza Spalding has reimagined the music-making process — transforming it from one designed to meet her label’s commercial needs to one designed to meet the mental-health needs of her immediate community With her new album Songwrights Apothecary Lab, Spalding offers up a collection of songs for “releasing the heaviness of a seemingly endless blue state,” for “steadying the vast-spinning ‘potential hurt’ analysis triggered by the bliss of new romance,” and for “slowing down and remembering to make space/time for your elders.” Spalding made clear that this way of “musicking” is nothing new: It’s like the oldest thing ever….we’re playing with the origin of music The origin of music being: a response to others in your community When you hum for a baby or when you’re sitting with somebody who is grieving and you Spalding’s view of music these days opened our eyes wide to the true healing power of individual songs and just how accessible music is when we need it (A rendering of the rooftop deck at Esperanza in Manhattan Beach.) The interior upgrades will include custom European designer bar stools and modernized individual restrooms with central access to enhance flow and privacy There will also be a brand new elevator and widened staircase for ADA compliance The front of the restaurant will look a little bit different - "maybe 10% different," according to DiNatale but the main changes will occur on the inside and upstairs Esperanza migrated to the north with her parents and siblings Esperanza was a graduate of Washington Park High School in Racine She retired from Racine Unified School District She started her domestic violence cases from Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill A 2News Investigation uncovers the plea deals involving other women where felony charges were reduced or dismissed altogether that could have sent him back to prison We also found his juvenile record contains almost one-hundred entries and he’s been in federal prison state prisons and jails more than half of his life We have attempted to get answers from Gill as to why Fred Jason Edwards with an extensive criminal history filled with violent acts toward women was given plea deals who had been dating Edwards for approximately 8 months was murdered on January 20 Unified Police homicide detectives say Edwards shot her in the head and then tried twice to put her in a garbage dumpster outside a business in Millcreek captured Edwards in his truck attempting to dump Chavez in the dumpster he then dropped her on the ground where she was later found leaning up against the dumpster Edwards is charged with first-degree murder first-degree felony discharge of a firearm possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person Esperanza’s mom says she and her daughter did not know much about the gravity of Edwards criminal history 2News Investigates confirmed Edwards was employed by Salt Lake County as a Landfill Traffic Controller we obtained a cell phone video Edwards recorded of himself his first day on the job “It's busy up here at the city dump man but it's a good job It's better than being in prison or sitting in a jail cell that's for damn sure you know what I mean I did 27 years in prison now attacked the guards In March 2News Investigates submitted a GRAMA request for jail surveillance footage of the riot At the time Assistant Supervisor Bobbie Molina said she discussed the request with her supervisors and it was decided that they could not create a record to fulfill our request They cited that they did not have the equipment that it would take to blur the other pre-trial detainees as there were several other pre-trial detainees visible throughout the video She said that at the time Edwards attacked We renewed our request early October and were told that the jail has some capability now to redact still images we were provided with photos taken from surveillance footage that showed an all-out assault with Edwards trying to gouge Officer Ibarra’s eyes out Officer Ibarra had told Edwards to move his property to another cell court documents show Ibarra told the rest of the inmates to go back to their cells Edwards told them not to follow Ibarra’s command Ibarra and Officer Frederickson tried to pull Edwards off Two other inmates grabbed Frederickson and pulled him off of Edwards The inmates were eventually restrained but as Edwards was being moved he told Officer Glad he was “going to get more officers” and “this is how it’s going to be every time.” Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah for assault on a federal officer He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 33 months in the Bureau of Prisons inside a 7-11 convenience store in West Valley City – Necie Rivera Edwards ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child ran into the store with a bloody mouth screaming to call 911 2News Investigates obtained the police body camera footage The officer’s body camera was rolling as they looked at the store surveillance video which showed Rivera running into the store and into the cashier area by the store clerk Edwards enters the store and comes behind the counter and tries to grab Rivera Rivera is found by the West Valley City Police officer sobbing on the floor in front of the refrigerated drink section “I jumped out of a moving car because my ex-boyfriend was trying to kill me.” The officer says “Your ex-boyfriend was trying to kill you,” and she says “I'm in a lot of pain like my head and my back,” and he tells her he’s calling for an ambulance and I'm scared he might go over there and do something bad to them.” The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office charged Edwards with kidnapping and multiple domestic violence crimes everything I had in there,” Rivera said to the officer dragged by her hair causing her to jump from a moving car and was treated for her injuries at the hospital Gill reduced a felony to a misdemeanor and dismissed the rest of the charges The kidnapping charge was struck and Gill reduced charge for taking her phone away and her purse Third District Court Judge Heather Brereton suspended the 365 days in jail and put Edwards on court probation for two years Edwards’ mom called West Valley City Police in fear for her life telling the dispatcher that her son had broken her TV 2News Investigates obtained police body camera footage of their response West Valley City Police Officer Lopez tells Edwards he’s seen text messages he sent his mom that he was going to cut her in half if she called his probation officer The text message ended with a disparaging and offensive term for a woman who is sexually promiscuous Edwards contended that he didn’t write it like that saying You deserved to get chopped down that’s what I said chopped down man it’s a slang for you deserve for me to cut you off my life man.” At first Edwards denied he damaged things in her home and blamed his mom They’re just upset messages text messages.” “You know where we’re coming from though why you’re here right now as far as; Utah takes domestic violence very seriously.” “Sending your mother messages as far as you know she’s gonna get you know cut in half if she contacted your PO you know that’s something we have to take really serious.” “If that’s the reason you’re taking me to jail take me to jail so I can go see my lawyer and get bailed out.” Gill’s office dismissed the felony charge instead Edwards pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor a third-degree felony for threatening his mom was dismissed Edwards pleaded guilty to Criminal Mischief Edwards was placed on court probation for two years Jontue described when she was told by police that her daughter was dead she was 15 at the time and we both just started crying we got him on camera trying to dump her body.” “He tried to throw her in the dumpster multiple times couldn’t get her in so he threw a bunch of stuff on top of her and left her Jontue said there were warning signs and that her daughter had moved back into their home to get away from Edwards and they were planning to move her out of state Chavez told Salt Lake City Police that Edwards had repeatedly punched her slammed her head against the steering wheel grabbed her face and wrapped his fingers around her right eye socket She told the officer that it felt like Edwards was trying to grab her eyeball and take it out The D.A’s office asked the judge to set bail for Edwards at $5,000 saying she is “at risk of further domestic abuse or death” if Edwards is released from jail The judge set bail at $2,000 and he walked out of jail “With his history alone he should have never been able to get out on bail.” One day before the move to Oregon and a pre-trial protective order was in place asked for by Gill’s office “Then he calls oh I gotta get you the rest of your stuff if you’re leaving tomorrow.” Esperanza’s yelling no I’m not getting in your car no matter what and the next thing you know they’re peeling out of the driveway together Within 20 to 40 minutes from that time point she was then being dropped off at the dumpster.” Eleven hours later Edwards was attempting to admit himself to the University of Utah Psychiatric Hospital and was arrested by Unified Police for the murder of Esperanza now my 25-year-old daughter will be 25 forever She will never have children; she’ll never get married she won’t be at Thanksgiving this year she’s not gonna be here on Christmas morning like she’s always been our whole lives She was an integral part of our family she has seven brothers and sisters who absolutely adore her Nieces and nephews who still talk about her being their guardian angel today,” Jontue said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill refused an on-camera interview with this investigative reporter Communications Manager Keith Chalmers sent the following statement attributed to Gill “As to your reference to previous prosecutions Edwards has two previous domestic violence cases that have been resolved In one (201913076) the victim was supportive of the resolution and in the other (201912937) the victim was uncooperative in the prosecution We cannot comment on other cases that are being actively prosecuted by this office.” « Back Keep up with the latest New Orleans events at calendar.gambitweekly.com Looking for more to do this week? For the amount of change the Guzmans have been through in the past year Monica credits the help of Ivy development owner Andrew Berlin and his staff with helping them solve some of their problems as they approached the finish line The new restaurant will fill a void in the project that's existed since it opened in 2019 Though the 120 apartments in the complex are filled La Esperanza is taking one of the key retail spots in the mixed-use development Monica likes the location because of the synergies that can be developed with the South Bend Cubs Fans might stop by before or after a game or special event for a bite to eat or a cold drink and it could become a vendor at the stadium the Guzmans also were able to get a $2,000-a-year riverfront liquor license for the business meaning it will now be able to offer margaritas beer and other adult beverages to go along with its Mexican cuisine Beyond the expansion that's underway at Four Winds Field the Guzmans also are aware of the growing number of apartments that are being developed on the south side of downtown With the hope that existing customers will follow them to the new location the Guzmans also hope to gain new business from downtown office workers in addition to the ballpark patrons and residents in the area The new location is also situated closer to South Bend's traditional Hispanic neighborhoods on South Bend's west side And to better connect to those neighborhoods La Esperanza will reopen on Sundays because many people like to eat out after church services are over mozzarella sticks and perhaps some other additions to appeal to baseball fans most of the menu at La Esperanza will remain intact using her grandmother's recipes from Guanajuato Lunches are priced from around $9 to $12 and dinners run from $12 to $17 With a separate room that can accommodate meetings and special events for up to 20 people the new La Esperanza can seat about 160 people and perhaps 20 more on the patio when the weather warms up The restaurant has 11 parking spaces in the development but there's also parking available along Western and other nearby streets but could be extended later for ball games and other special events "Our focus is going to remain on family dining," Monica says margaritas and other drinks will expand our appeal."
