archivist and curator Amarie Cemone Gipson Photo: Troy Ezequiel Montes
archivist and new research fellow at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)
has found a brick-and-mortar space for her growing library of books about Black artists and movements
Gipson launched The Reading Room HTX as a stylish online resource featuring more than 300 titles on the last day of February
CAMH was becoming more involved in a large-scale initiative to support Freedmen’s Town—a district in the city’s Fourth Ward that was built by formerly enslaved people—with documentation
infrastructural funding and arts programming that centres the existing community
Residents of Freedmen’s Town laid their brick roads by hand in the mid-1860s. Artists-in-residence are imagining the community as it might look now if the City of Houston had protected the area and allowed it to flourish. The district includes seven sites listed as part of Unesco's Routes of Enslaved Peoples project
a library filled with books by and about Black artists
“If you want to understand American history
you have to understand the South,” Gipson says
A previous physical manifestation of curator and archivist Amarie Cemone Gipson's The Reading Room Courtesy Amarie Cemone Gipson
Freedmen’s Town residents will get transportation to special film screenings and priority access to programming at The Reading Room’s space in Post
As lead research fellow, Gipson will be at the core of Rebirth in Action: Telling the Story of Freedom
the city of Houston and artist Theaster Gates
whose social practice work on the South Side of Chicago offers a guide for this endeavour
Mellon Foundation gave $1.25m million to Rebirth in Action and named research fellows as part of the grant; the initiative also received support from the National Endowment for the Arts through its Our Town programme
Gipson is working closely with Charonda Johnson
vice president of Freedmen’s Town Association
This physical iteration of The Reading Room offers a crucial space for independent learning as Texas legislators pass bills to ban certain books from public school classrooms
Gipson hopes the library will attract like-minded archivists in the Freedmen’s Town community who have their own stories to tell
She will also have access to materials at the nearby African American History Research Center
in the building that housed the Gregory School
the first school for Black students in Houston
and has suffered from an unbelievable type of erasure,” Gipson says
“Using creativity and arts education to inspire people or make them aware of their history
it’s the best thing that you could possibly do.”

Mich Stevenson, an artist and project manager at CAMH, and the museum’s deputy director, Seba Raquel Suber, see Gipson’s role as essential to the kind of cross-generational repair they hope to facilitate in Freedmen’s Town.
“We are excited to welcome social change makers like Amarie Gipson to this project,” Suber says. “Partnerships of this nature and community collaborations are new territory for CAMH, however crucial for museums to remain culturally relevant, impactful and position artists as a catalyst for social change.”

February 15 at Hotel ZaZa in the heart of the city’s museum district
This year’s auction honors Gay Block
a founding member of HCP and acclaimed portrait photographer
capturing the essence of her subjects in a way that is truly breathtaking
Rescuers: Portraits of Moral Courage in the Holocaust
has been exhibited internationally at venues which include the Museum of Modern Art
As a founding member of HCP, Block was instrumental in the growth of the organization and served as one of the first board presidents. Although she no longer lives in Houston, the organization remains close to her heart. Block has remained active in the Houston art world too. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston holds the largest collection of her work
and the University of Houston will receive her archives
These include four lots from Magnum photographers
a handful from Houston Center for Photography instructors and a strong showing from photographers throughout the state of Texas
and the other 55 are part of the silent auction
with Ruth Mauldin returning as the auctioneer
the live auction is only available to those at the dinner
but for the first time this year HCP is allowing bidding by proxies
The bidding process for the silent auction is streamlined and available online through Qtego
I research and place artwork for clients while trying to educate
Here are my Top 10 Picks for the HCP auction:
This auction would not be complete without a portrait by honoree Gay Block
This piece — one of two Block works in the auction — is from her Miami series
in which she photographs Jewish retirees in South Beach in the 1980s
I adore the two elderly women chatting in the beach chairs with their hands folded in their laps
palm trees and Art Deco architecture stretch out in the distance
This photograph of a model’s raw and blistered feet in yellow slingback heels by Dina Litovsky went viral when it was posted by National Geographic on Instagram in 2022
triggering a heated discussion about beauty standards and the fashion industry
Many women can relate to the ordeal of wearing painful shoes
and this visceral photograph captures exactly that
Artist Martín Wannam critically examines and reimagines his homeland of Guatemala
The artist uses stickers and emblems sourced from Guatemala and cut-out plexiglass acrylic in this mixed-media piece
The bright colors and whimsical style belie the profound nature of the work
Magnum photographer Yael Martinez recently led a class at HCP on community
he made this unique piece specifically for the auction
The figure wearing the Astros jersey while wrapped in the American flag is truly emblematic of the Bayou City
What makes the photograph especially exciting is that the print has been manipulated through cuts and folds
and held in place by silver pins that stick out quite sculpturally
I am incredibly intrigued by this photograph by Stuart Allen
This photograph was initially taken through the window of an airplane on an iPhone
The artist then applied an algorithm that breaks down the snapshot into a grid of small dots
so that a record of the color of atmospheric light remains
Chris McCaw is internationally recognized for his unique approach to contemporary landscape photography
Sunburned GSP#1069 (Olympics) records the passage of time through the movement of the sun in a handmade large-format camera
this unique gelatin silver paper negative has been solarized in the camera
unique gelatin silver photograph of Lionel Richie was taken by Mark Sink in the early 1980s
when he worked for Andy Warhol and documented celebrity culture
Sink repurposed this vintage print by adding the vinyl dots
activating the image while exploring memory and time
Houston-based photographer Troy Ezequiel Montes documents his annual pilgrimages to his ancestral home of El Porvenir
This photograph immediately caught my eye due to the artist’s understanding of color and composition
as well as the extreme shadows that slightly obscure the figure’s face
This piece by Brigitte Bauer is about the act of viewing and being viewed
The park in the photograph is surrounded by a wall printed with a black-and-white image
A square window in the wall allows the passerby to peek in
revealing a burst of soft greens and a tree trunk rising from the ground
In the midst of the tree’s beautiful branches is a pole with cameras
I particularly like this photograph for its peculiarity and how it provoked my continued contemplation of surveillance
Samuel Ryde is a British photographer who captures often-overlooked items of the everyday
London is part of a fascinating study of hand dryers throughout the world
I’m a fan of Ryde’s photography and have included his work in exhibitions
so I was pleasantly surprised to find this piece in the auction

Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase is reporting that the Colorado Rockies and shortstop Ezequiel Tovar have agreed to an extension
BREAKING: SS Ezequiel Tovar and the Colorado #Rockies are in agreement to a contract extension, sources tell @ElExtrabase
the deal would keep the 22-year-old defensive wizard in Denver through 2031 with a club option for the eighth year
Tovar’s deal is for seven guaranteed years and a club option that could make him earn $84M, sources tell @ElExtrabase. Tovar will become a Free-Agent at 29 years old. https://t.co/rh9gPdGiCo
Tovar was a Gold Glove finalist who struggled to hit breaking balls
he will look to improve the offensive side of his game
Originally signed out of Venezuela in 2017 by the Rockies
Tovar made a quick rise through the minor league system before making his Major League debut at the end of the 2022 season
Tovar slashed .284/.343/.438 over 283 games
boasting a .782 OPS with 31 home runs and 149 RBI
Tovar was advised to focus purely on his natural right side where he displayed more power
Tovar displayed flashes of his potential as the everyday shortstop
In 153 games he slashed .253/.287/.408 with a 77 OPS+ and 70 wRC+
He clubbed 15 home runs and led the team with 73 RBI while also tying Todd Helton for the most doubles by a rookie in a single season (37)
His glaring flaw was an overaggressive approach at the plate
Tovar sported a 27% strikeout rate against a 4.1% walk rate in 2023
The Rockies are hoping that as Tovar matures
he will cut down on a tendency to chase balls in the dirt and become a more selective hitter
Tovar has been as good or better than advertised
He finished third in the NL Gold Glove award voting at shortstop while also posting a record-setting .988 fielding percentage for a rookie shortstop
beating the previous record of .987 by Troy Tulowitzki during his rookie campaign in 2007

keeping him in the fold of the Colorado Rockies for at least the next seven seasons
Tovar agreed with the Rockies on a seven-year contract that includes a club option for an eighth season
This would ensure that the 22-year-old shortstop is under team control and not hit free agency until after the 2031 season — his age-29 campaign
The contract is worth up to $84 million. The deal was first reported by Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com
Ezequiel Tovar made his professional debut in 2019 with the rookie-league team the Rockies organization had at the time in Grand Junction
advancing to AAA by 2022 despite losing a year to COVID-19 canceling the 2020 minor-league campaign
In his rookie season last year
Tovar worked as the everyday shortstop and finished as a Gold Glove finalist while also ranking 10th among all National League players in fielding WAR
though he did hit 15 home runs and post a .408 slugging percentage
although a low walk rate with a .253 batting average kept his OPS just below .700
— including a .663 mark after the All-Star break
Tovar also had 6.64 strikeouts for every walk last season
But at minimum, his defensive skills give him value. Statcast calculated his defensive value last year at 16 outs above average
placing him in the 99th percentile of fielders
there is plenty of hope that Ezequiel Tovar can develop a competent bat at the Major League level
Armed with the contract and commitment given to him by the Rockies

Sep. 22: The Rockies have officially announced Tovar’s promotion. In a corresponding move, infielder Brendan Rodgers will be placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain
With only 13 games left in Colorado’s schedule
Rodgers may be sidelined for the rest of 2022
Sep. 21: The Rockies are going to promote shortstop prospect Ezequiel Tovar, according to Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase
Tovar is already on the club’s 40-man roster
though the Rockies will need to open a spot for him on the active roster
signed with the Rockies as an international amateur in 2017
He was certainly a notable signing at the time
the highest given out by the club that year
But the youngster has increased his stock tremendously in recent years
he had shown some decent plate discipline but little power
He hit only two long balls over 118 games in rookie ball and A-ball in 2018 and 2019
as Baseball America notes in their scouting report on Tovar
he bulked up during the pandemic shutdown in 2020 and has been on a meteoric rise up prospect lists ever since
He began this year in Double-A and played 66 games for the Hartford Yard Goats
stole 17 bases and hit .318/.386/.545 for a wRC+ of 153
He was recently promoted to Triple-A but only got into four games before being launched up to the big time
Tovar will have the last few weeks of the season to show the Colorado brass how he handles the big leagues
with the possibility of cementing himself as the shortstop of the future
Though the club is well out of contention at this point of the season
the chance to see what Tovar can bring to the table will give Colorado fans something to watch as the season winds down
If Tovar can indeed earn himself a permanent spot with the big league club
There’s not enough time remaining in the season for Tovar to get to 130 at-bats
meaning he will hang onto rookie/prospect status into the offseason
Under the new collective bargaining agreement
players with less than 60 days of service who appear among two preseason Top 100 lists at Baseball America
ESPN or MLB Pipeline can net their team a bonus amateur draft choice based on their early-career finishes in awards voting
so long as their club carries them on the MLB roster for a full service year
If Tovar can get himself a Rookie of the Year award or some MVP votes during his first couple of full seasons
Colorado Rockies Newsstand Top Prospect Promotions Transactions Brendan Rodgers Ezequiel Tovar
He was just about the hottest hitter/fielder in the minors (at AA) before getting hurt and losing a few months
Been back a bit now (at AAA too) but the Rockies aren’t often known for promoting young guys aggressively
so people were very low on the prospects of him getting much MLB next year
Thanks Toasty for providing the only relevant insight on this post
Tovar had a great spring and despite his age it really opened up the door for him this season
With strong AA numbers and if not for the injury I’m surprised he wasn’t called up sooner
I don’t see the rockies making a splash at SS this offseason when Tovar is clearly the answer going forward
Let him sink or swim show the league what he’s made of and benefit on the lack of pop in his bat by playing in a ballpark that will work wonders on him
Might be the best decision this organization has made in the last 5 years heck maybe 10
It’s a shame Bud Black has something to say about his playtime though
I know it’s not the exact name same but close enough
I guess that joke went over your head and you likely don’t have an Instagram
I know a crack baby when I read ones comments
Nonsense like that is one (of the many) reasons i don’t have Instagram (or any other social media)
With or without IG there’s gotta be somewhere you’ve seen it
Several videos have been around for several years now
First thing that pops in my head when I see the name Ezekiel
so it’s probably not THAT well known
After a nice season overall in Denver it looks like Iglesias is one his way to what will be his 7th team in 6 seasons
I don’t really think it matters because the Rockies have played like they are already in the offseason
Tovar is listed as a switch hitter on Baseball Reference
All the video I’ve watched show him ONLY hitting righthanded
but dropped being a lefty a couple years back
He is exclusively a right handed hitter now
You can’t blame them for the prospects not panning out as planned
Jeff Hoffman was a decent contributor for a few years
Miguel Castro just couldn’t pitch at altitude but he has developed into a fine big league reliever elsewhere
And the whole Jose Reyes DV matter didn’t help either
The return on Story will 100% depend on the development of Sterlin Thompson
the comp pick received for not trading Story
I am happy with anything in return for him
No team with so much talent has done so badly
but they have embraced the word beyond normal
The team is mostly made up of AAAA players and minor league signings
The All Star on the team this year is CJ Cron who signed a minor league deal

The contract comes with a potential eighth year on a club option that would increase Tovar's earnings to $84 million, per Harding and the New York Post's Jon Heyman
Although Tovar's doubles total tied for fifth among NL first-years, and his 73 RBI matched the fourth-most by a rookie in Rockies franchise history
Tovar was named a Gold Glove Award finalist in 2023 after recording 13 defensive runs saved and plus-16 outs above average in 2023
That OAA ranked Tovar in the 99th percentile of all fielders, according to Baseball Savant
The only shortstop in the league with a higher OAA was Chicago Cubs veteran Dansby Swanson
The Rockies will hope Tovar can improve his plate discipline while continuing to provide defense in 2024 as the team looks to continue its rebuild
Jones, 25, is slated to become a free agent after the 2027 season. In February, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand described the left fielder as a top candidate for a long-term extension
The coming year looks good for Mexican wine tourism and its wine-producing regions around the country. The decade-long growth spurt of the country’s wine industry has witnessed the development of new leading voices and while there is still work to do
Vineyards are growing in quality and product development and annual harvest festivals are each year more spectacular than the last
and even architecture offer visitors incredible and diverse experiences
The country’s two most important wine routes are in Ensenada
Baja California and in the Bajio region in the center of the country which spans Querétaro and Guanajuato
starts in Ensenada and will take you on a tour of more than 70 wineries tucked into various nearby valleys close to the coast — Valle de Guadalupe
We’ve discussed Valle de Guadalupe and its excellent wine country, food and hospitality at length already
but Mexico’s other major wine route is the Ruta del Bajio
which runs between the states of Querétaro and Guanajuato
Colonial architecture is around every corner. Ancient mansions, aqueducts, Talavera tile, and artistic mosaics all form a part of this landscape
The region’s history dates back to the first vineyards in Mexico and despite years of negligible production
The section of the wine route that snakes through Querétaro is known as the Vino
as the area is known for its cheese production
a long-time regional producer of brandy is now undergoing a renovation to convert its vines from brandy to wine production
In this part of the country there are more than 50 vineyards
a prestigious brand of cava that originated near Barcelona
their days-long harvest festival is one of the most attended in the country
It’s helpful to remember that harvest time in Mexico is from July to September
with each vineyard choosing the right moment in celebration of that year’s grapes
Freixenet also hosts an annual paella festival where experts and amateurs alike test their culinary skills and visitors themselves can try a variety of paellas and taste wines from across the region
These activities and festivals have helped make Freixenet México the most visited winery in the country
Another important winery along the route is Bodega La Redonda
which in 2025 celebrates a half century of making wine with concerts and events throughout the year
The most anticipated is the Wine Colors festival, celebrated this year in May
excellent cuisine and the option to stay at the Merlot Inn
They also offer a “wine glamping” package perfect for couples that includes evening strolls through the grape vines
There’s also a trattoría serving authentic Italian food alongside the great wine
This colonial town has a central plaza full of restaurants and bars
that accompany their wine tastings with cheese and charcuterie
Most places are very close and make it easy to move around between the wineries and the towns
Tequesquiapan is also home to Tres Raíces vineyard
a relatively young project that offers both a hotel and a vineyard for guests
The space is modern but constructed with Talavera tile and ceramics from the region and is beautiful both inside and out
From their terrace there is a spectacular view of the vineyards and architecture built to blend with the natural surroundings
vibrant and a complete delight for the palate
Tres Raíces’ reds are highly complex
with the relatively unknown caladoc varietal worth a try if you want to be blown away by the quality of Mexican wine
A short distance away from Tequesquiapan is San Juanito
a boutique winery known for its wine made from a single varietal of grape
They’ve submitted a proposal for an Appellation of Origin for this area as they grow a type of Tempranillo is acutely adapted to the microclimate here
Crossing state lines into Guanajuato lies the oldest wine museum in the country, in the town of Dolores Hidalgo, the birthplace of Mexico’s independence movement
The first bodega in this area was Cuna de Tierra
Now one of the country’s most famous vineyards
Cuna de Tierra started as a project among friends and the vineyard’s architecture has won it several international prizes
Their level of production is still considered boutique and they have won more than 80 international prizes for their wine
Among all their varietals the nebbiolo stands out
though there is an ample portfolio of blended and single varietal wines that are bold
Moving on down the route, San Miguel de Allende is considered to have some of the highest quality of life around the globe. The first name on your list of vineyards here should be Viñedo San Miguel
which has excellent national wines as well as Italian imports from the owner’s Tuscan estates
Their brand also includes an exclusive line of clothing and leather goods
An adjoining real estate development also offers investors the chance to make their own wine and own a space in their exclusive residential area
Dos Búhos has a smaller yearly production but offers top-quality wine including varietals like Sauvignon Blanc and Agliánico
Getting to the vineyard from San Miguel is easy by taxi
To further enhance the wine tourism experience
you should take the opportunity to visit the “Magic Town” of Comonfort
known for its production of mortars and pestles
Its cobblestone streets and Colonial mansions aren’t far from San Miguel and there are several more vineyards between these two towns for the thirsty traveller
There are more than 100 vineyards in Queretaro and Guanajuato and so it is impossible to mention them all
the quality and warmth of the service is outstanding
Most have their own websites and local tourism agencies can help you create an unforgettable itinerary

Montes is set to start at second base and hit sixth in the lineup against the San Diego Padres today
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Last night it was reported by The Blake Street Banter and confirmed by Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post that the Colorado Rockies have selected the contract of minor league second baseman Coco Montes
Today the Rockies announced the following moves:- Selected the contract of INF Coco Montes (#3) - Optioned INF Alan Trejo to Triple-A Albuquerque - Recalled C Brian Serven from Albuquerque - Placed OF Charlie Blackmon on the 10-day IL with a right-hand fracture (fifth…
Saunders later reported today the news was broken to Montes yesterday in the Isotopes locker room during a team meeting

The hype is definitely real as Nolan Jones has now played in a total of 15 games for the Colorado Rockies and is quickly winning the hearts of many Rockies fans.
Nolan Jones is making a strong case to remain on the Colorado roster
According to a report from Daniel Álvarez-Montes, the Colorado Rockies and young promising shortstop Ezequiel Tovar are agreeing to a long-term extension
The contract buys out all of his arbitration years and two free agency years
— Daniel Álvarez-Montes (@DanielAlvarezEE) March 24, 2024
Tovar broke Rockies camp last year, and at 21 years of age, became the youngest Opening Day starter in Rockies franchise history. He took that opportunity and ran with it. Tovar recorded 16 OAA last season which was in the 99th percentile according to Baseball Savant
and was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award
His sweet spot percentage of 36.4% ranked well in the 71st percentile and is something he can hopefully build on
There are some things he has to improve on though
Tovar was in the 2nd percentile in chase rate
He strikes out at a 27% clip while only walking 4% of the time
His average exit velocity was only a mere 88 mph
but he is entering only his second full season at the age of 22 and has a lot of room and time for improvement
His defense is already elite and it looks as if multiple Gold Glove awards are coming to him in the future
If his offense can pick up to what the Rockies front office projects it can become
this contract could become a steal within a few years

the Rockies had to quickly pivot plans at second base in the wake of Brendan Rodgers’s shoulder injury in spring training
it was a fairly simple plan to move Ryan McMahon back and let Elehuris Montero take over
Montero’s start to the season was less than ideal on both sides of the ball and the Rockies quickly abandoned that infield arrangement
that left the Rockies to simply work with the tandem of Alan Trejo and Harold Castro at second base
Castro and Trejo have done fine in that platoon
There isn’t anything egregious coming from their performances as their defense has been good and they have had their moments at the plate
It’s not the end of the world if they continue to hold down the position for the year (barring any injuries)
but that doesn’t mean things couldn’t and shouldn’t potentially improve
Montes is on a tear down in Triple-A Albuquerque and is practically knocking down the door to demand a spot at the table in the big leagues
Following the growth and success we are seeing from Ezequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle
it leaves one to wonder what Montes could do if given the opportunity
Originally drafted in the 15th round in 2018 out of the University of South Florida
Montes has continued to raise his stock through the Rockies’ minor league system and his 2023 season in Albuquerque is becoming one for the ages that the Rockies need to take advantage of while the iron’s hot
Montes is batting a stellar .339/.421/.564 with seven home runs and 37 RBI with things getting better from there
Advanced stats help get a clearer picture of the offensive production Montes is providing
According to FanGraphs he currently has a career-high 140 wRC+
and .233 ISO while posting an 11.5 weighted Runs Above Average
Out of the 54 hits Montes has on the season
a stark contrast to the [checks notes] nine total from Trejo and Castro
Montes’ power potential has become an important part of his offensive profile
he has slugged double-digit home runs in every season
including a career-high 20 home runs during the 2022 campaign
A reason his power success comes down to his batted ball profile
specifically his ability to hit line drives
Montes has a 26.7% line drive a feat that he averaged last year and has contributed to a lot of his success
As a result of the number of line drives he hits
he has managed to keep his groundball rate under 40% for most of his professional career
Fly balls are lower than his career norm at the moment
but he has averaged one about 40% of the time
he is averaging 0.86 ground outs to fly outs
which has helped Albuquerque produce the type of offense we have seen from them all season
A great indicator of the value Montes’ bat can provide is best demonstrated by his Player of the Week recognition for April 11-16
He helped his club win four of six games on the road from the El Paso Chihuahuas while going 11-for-26 with four doubles
He also had five multi-hit contests and drove in multiple runs in four of the six games
It’s also worth noting that his plate discipline is continually improving
Montes has a 23.3% strikeout rate a mark that falls in line with his career numbers
He’s also got a 12.7% walk rate which is quite serviceable
His 44 strikeouts to 24 walks highlight the fact that Montes is aggressive in the count and makes contact early and often
This season he is seeing 3.913 pitches per plate appearance
showing he is improving his plate discipline while also keeping his typical offensive approach
While this article has mainly focused on his offensive dealings
his defensive capabilities are also noteworthy
I’ve had a couple of opportunities to watch Montes in person down in Albuquerque and whether he is playing second base
and positional awareness to handle each spot with the type of care and precision that we have come to expect from our Rockies infielders
Love for the glove ft. Coco Montes.@ABQTopes | @Rockies pic.twitter.com/ldPS75rb5q
the Rockies can continue to send out Castro and Trejo
both of whom have their own strengths and weaknesses
but at some point soon it may be worthwhile to look at what’s coming up behind them and give them a chance to try and carve out a spot in the big leagues and show that they may be an improvement because it’s working for some of the other younger players
Coco Montes looks ready to take up that challenge and I’m eager for him to get that chance
Ryan Feltner gives baseball a wake-up call | Sportscaster Dan’s Newsletter
writes in his newsletter that Ryan Felter’s injury after taking a line drive to the head in his last start should be a wake-up call for MLB to figure out how to help protect pitchers
He expresses that MLB should have the technology in this day and age to figure out some sort of helmet or protective cap that is light enough to not impede a pitcher’s throwing motion
Justin Lawrence has been a dominant part of a strong Rockies bullpen this season and it’s nice to see him getting more recognition in articles like this one from MLB.com. His sweeper is sweeping the nation and he’s a regular featured pitcher on Pitching Ninja’s account on Twitter. Additionally, old friend Carlos Estevez is also having an incredible breakout season with the Los Angeles Angels

Colorado Rockies news and links for Thursday
For months now fans of the Colorado Rockies have been tantalized with idea of “Tovar Time:” the day in which the organization’s no
28 MLB-wide prospect Ezequiel Tovar would be called up for his major league debut
There was clamoring for his call-up before the All-Star Break
only to have those hopes denied by a nagging groin injury as fans ticked off the days on the calendar waiting for Tovar Time to come
Having Ezequiel Tovar finally on the precipice of his major league debut is where most people think the story begins
I think it’s important to explore all the minutes that have ticked by before the clock finally struck Tovar Time
“Tovar made his United States debut in 2019 and took his glove with him
range and arm all point to playing a plus shortstop for a very long time.”
“He knows where he’s supposed to be. He reads hops. He does all the things you’re hoping a 24- or a 25-year-old figures out,” said Rockies scout Ty Coslow. “He’s 19 and plays the game like he’s 30
Much like current Rockies catching prospect Drew Romo when he was drafted
Tovar’s defense was already extremely advanced while his bat had potential but needed work
Tovar joined the Rockies at their complex in Arizona for fall instructs at the end of 2019 and 2020’s minor league spring training only to end up stranded in the United States due to the COVID-19 pandemic
He would be stuck in Arizona for 18 months unable to return home to Venezuela
“I used that time being away from my family as motivation to get better as a baseball player,” Tovar told Rockies Magazine writer Jack Etkin
“The maturity is something we always wait on,” said Assistant Director of Player Development Chris Forbes
This is something where he had to tighten his belt and be extremely mature about
It was a circumstance well beyond his control
Tovar spent his time in Arizona doing strength and conditioning training to add power to his bat while also working on his bat control
He showed up to 2020 fall instructs looking and playing stronger
He took his increased bat skills to the Low-A Fresno Grizzlies
Over 72 games in Fresno Tovar became a team leader in most offensive categories
At the end of the season Tovar still had the Grizzlies’ second best batting average and OPS
His 11 home runs were second most on the team and his slugging percentage was the top mark
Tovar was promoted to the High-A Spokane Indians in August of 2021
where he would struggle to adjust to the higher level of play at the plate
Over 32 games his slash—especially his on-base percentage—took a noticeable dip and he struck out more often
Tovar joined the Arizona Fall League with the Salt River Rafters where he dazzled defensively but continued his struggle at the plate
He hit just .161 with 20 strikeouts over 96 plate appearances but did hit three more home runs
The key for Tovar’s bat was to adjust to the higher level of play with the goal of being a big league player
“Obviously a goal is playing in the big leagues,” Tovar told Etkin
“So playing on a big league field and hitting a home run made me feel more comfortable and made me think I can do it.”
The Rockies invited Tovar to their major league spring training for 2022
Tovar slashed an astonishing .550/.550/1.100 against big league caliber pitchers
His OPS for the spring was an obscene 1.650
leading all spring hitters with more than five at-bats
The Rockies were also missing a shortstop with the departure of Trevor Story..
Tovar was assigned to the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats to start the season with the expectation of being either in Triple-A or on the MLB roster by the end of the season
At just 20 years old he was the youngest player on both the team and in the Eastern League
Tovar still leads the team in OPS despite not having played there since June
Tovar was named to the All-Star Futures Game
but a nagging groin injury kept him from appearing and kept him out of action until just last week
On September 15th Tovar made his debut with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes after a lenghty rehab
In five games with the Isotopes Tovar has slashed .333/.391/.476 while only striking out twice in 21 at-bats
and with their starting shortstop José Iglesias on the IL
and many other rookies getting playing time
it was now the perfect opportunity for their top prospect to get major league reps
After a long and honestly tough to watch season of Rockies baseball
and a minor league career of ups and downs for Ezequiel Tovar
there is now one more thing for Rockies fans to be excited about
Noah Yingling at Rox Pile has the latest on injured Rockies players Kris Bryant and José Iglesias
Bryant has been running drills and taking batting practice
He has been out since July with plantar fasciitis
Iglesias has been on the IL with a sore hand and has resumed fielding activities
Skipper Bud Black expects him to play again before the end of the season but did not have an expected timeframe
Triple-A: Sugar Land Space Cowboys 4, Albuquerque Isotopes 3
The Albuquerque Isotopes are the last Rockies affiliate still playing baseball this season
Starting pitcher Zach Neal had a solid start for the Isotopes yesterday
going five innings while giving up two earned runs on five hits and a walk
Neal allowed a two-run home run in the third inning
Matt Dennis was shackled with the loss after giving up two earned runs on three hits—including a home run—over his two relief innings
Will Gaddis pitched a scoreless eighth inning
Brenton Doyle continues to hit the ball well after his promotion from Double-A
He had a 2-for-4 day at the plate and hit a solo home run in the second inning
DJ Peterson also hit a solo home run that inning
Ezequiel Tovar went 2-for-4 in his final game before being promoted to MLB
while Jimmy Herron went 2-for-4 to continue a strong September
Herron is hitting .357/.429/.690 with three home runs in 14 games this month
BACK-TO-BACK! Brenton Doyle follows the Peterson clout with a dinger of his own!T2:Isotopes 2, Space Cowboys 0 pic.twitter.com/PIo3gUaeTX

Curated by Hypeart, Love Letters to LA is a heartfelt tribute to LA’s immigrant communities
showcasing diverse artworks at SIZED STUDIO in East Hollywood
These pieces draw inspiration from artists’ personal journeys
combining traditional techniques with industrial methods and unconventional materials
Highlighted works in the exhibition include Alfonso Gonzalez Jr.’s Figeroa Beauty (2020)
a monumental work that stems from his exploration of hand-painted signs and the weathered traces of Los Angeles
the artist delves into the layered interactions found on public surfaces
serving as modern palimpsests where earlier facades are replaced but traces linger
His works are not just metaphors; they embody the visual as a form of knowledge and language
Nikkolos Mohammed’s Cage 2 (26) (2022) is a work from a new
ongoing series in which the artist reclaims hybrid identities through creating contrasting forms
through mixed-media collages and ephemera-induced sculptures
Mohammad uses sports analogies to examine larger social ideas
Taylor Lee’s Happy Thoughts (2023) is also a new piece that is part of an ongoing body of work where the artist focuses on exaggerated and voluminous female forms to champion diversity and womanhood
Taylor’s inspirations for her current work also draw heavily from live action dramas of superhumans and robots based in Japan or the Tokusatsu genre
Patrick Martinez is introducing a collection of neon collages that sensitively capture the challenges faced by immigrants in his local Los Angeles community and those worldwide who lack representation
The artist is renowned for his mixed media “`landscape” paintings
all of which aim to evoke a sense of place and reveal locations where personal
What does Los Angeles symbolize or represent for you personally?
Patrick Martinez: A dense richness, encompassing many and fostering interesting intersections of hybridity. My mother was Filipino and my father is Indigenous Native American and Mexican, they met here so I’m a direct reflection and representation of the city.
Mike Reesé: Los Angeles symbolizes a theme park sized playground that I was able to play in everyday, bust my ass and learn what’s for me and what’s not for me in this life, the place that gave me space to explore myself as a contributor to the larger picture of life, creativity and even humanity.
Taylor Lee: Los Angeles has always been my cultural haven, filling the void I experienced growing up in quiet Henderson, Nevada. It symbolizes not just a city, but my future—a place where my cravings for diverse experiences find fulfillment, and my dreams have room to grow.
Edmund Arevalo: To me Los Angeles is a blend of dreams, creativity, and ambition. A west coast laidback lifestyle, vibrant multiculturalism, and Traffic.
Daniela Garcia Hamilton: LA represents culture for me. It’s a hub where so many different cultural groups have been able to blend together and get still keep true to their uniqueness.
Nikkolos Mohammed: Los Angeles symbolizes duality. Truth & fairy tales. Inglewood & Hollywood. Conceptual & Commercial. Survival & Entertainment. Beach & Valley.
Jacob Rochester: LA is a great representation of a huge change in energy for me the moment I arrived. I have grounded myself here and have always taken in and appreciated the people I’ve met and the conversations that I’ve had that have shaped my practice in art, design and music.
Could you provide additional insights into the artworks featured in ‘Love Letters to LA’?
Patrick Martinez: Although visually different, the text based neon works and the stucco paintings operate as landscapes of LA. They are from the land and they describe certain areas of the city but they are familiar to all.
Taylor Lee: In the upcoming show, I’ll be displaying three pieces. The Strong Women artwork embodies female strength and resilience, showcasing the power of overcoming challenges. The two Godzilla pieces reflect my nostalgia from growing up as an Asian American in the ’90s, a time when Asian representation was scarce. Through Godzilla, a beloved icon, I found solace in my identity and a sense of belonging, making these pieces a poignant reminder of my cultural exploration.
Daniela Garcia Hamilton: Both the works in the show are my personal reflections of traditions I grew up with. Pastel embodies the rich of joy I would feel after the cake ceremony, it was a reminder of how beautiful it is to have cultural rituals that embody messages of love and family in unique ways.
Nikkolos Mohammed: All of my works in the exhibition come from the point of view of dealing with relief from an emotional and physical process. Because of this, they delve into the visceral process of relief carving or excavating deeper meaning either through poetic or historical language.
Jacob Rochester: I’ve been focusing on portraits that provide a more personal approach to my work. A lot of my recent subjects have been close friends that pull up to my studio, who I also see as an extension of myself in many ways. I like to zero in on different angles across multiple paintings that provide brief insight to who the person is, often shown through their expressions, the clothing they wear and the motifs highlighted in closely cropped compositions.
In one sentence, how would you describe the core essence of your artistic practice?
Alfonso Gonzalez Jr.: Observant exploration of the now, weaving together the threads of community, familial bonds, and cultural elements to evoke a nostalgic and conceptual tapestry.
Patrick Martinez: Sampling materials, tropes and stories of Los Angeles then injecting them into my process equates to many discoveries. That’s the core of my artistic process and I’m definitely committed approach.
Taylor Lee: Celebration of resilience, diversity, and the pursuit of identity, using powerful symbols and personal experiences to evoke universal emotions and connections.
Edmund Arevalo: Combining family portraits and collaging archival materials to retell and challenge traditional narratives of migration and cultural assimilation.
Patrick martinez: Sampling materials, tropes and stories of Los Angeles then injecting them into my process equates to many discoveries. That’s the core of my artistic process and I’m definitely committed approach.
Daniela Garcia Hamilton: My painting practice seeks to communicate the joy of growing up in a minority group, it’s meant to emphasize the positive upbringing we experienced, despite the hostility we encountered outside our community.
Nikkolos Mohammed: Hybrid identities through hybrid forms.
Jacob Rochester: The core essence of my practice is a culmination of obsessions of techniques that I distill and employ across my work, often in a way that is coded and representative of my taste in design, portraiture, form, object and attention to detail.

is undoubtedly the vineyard to visit in Guanajuato
Casa Madero, Parras, Coahuila Moving north to the Parras region of Coahuila, you will find one of the biggest and best wine-producing areas in Mexico
Here you can even visit the oldest winery in the Americas too – Casa Madero
founded in 1597 – and taste its selection of wines which run the gamut from reds like Shiraz and Malbec to whites such as Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc
This spectacular vineyard also has fully certified organic status and a quaint hacienda if you want to stay overnight
The best-known vineyard in Querétaro is easily Finca Sala Vivé
which is perhaps more commonly referred to simply as Freixenet in reference to the wine brand produced there
As part of the Wine and Cheese route of the region – and situated just outside popular pueblo mágico Tequisquiapan – it’s not exactly a hidden gem
but it is a well-organised and scenic spot that offers both tours of the grounds and the option to dine in the winery
Our first vineyard option in Baja California – the most famous of all Mexico’s wine producing regions – is Finca La Carrodilla in the popular Valle de Guadalupe
Known for making artisanal and certified organic wines
it’s also dedicated to sustainability in every step of its operations
from recycling water to the use of solar panels
Finca La Carrodilla would make a great spot for a romantic day out or dinner and drinks with friends
We move back to Parras for Bodega Rivero González in Coahuila
Proud to be contributing to the great – if undervalued – tradition of Mexican wine
this friendly vineyard offers guided tours of the vines and wine tasting in the vaults
If you’re interested in a more organised wine event though
try and head there for the Cosecha Mágica annual Wine Festival which takes place in August and enjoy their rosés and experimental blends
In the Valle de Guadalupe, Ensenada you should definitely pay a visit to Adobe Guadalupe
one of the region’s most long-standing and successful vineyards that’s got all bases covered
from the classics like Cabernet Sauvignon to Merlot to lesser known varietals like Nebbiolo and Mourvedre
book a room at their B&B and take advantage of the horse riding options available

Querétaro’s second best vineyard, La Redonda, could actually make for the ideal option if you prefer a more intimate experience. For 365 days a year, they’re open for you to enjoy the scenic views, Mediterranean-style climate and delicious wines (we have it on good authority that their rosé is exquisite
Having been going strong for almost 40 years
La Redonda shows no sign of slowing down any time soon either
we move back to the temperate slopes of Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California with Decantos Vinícola and its impressive installations
this vineyard is a masterpiece of contemporary design and will please wine and architecture fans alike due to its flavoursome grapes and full-length glass walls
in a move that sets it apart from many other wineries
Decantos Vinícola uses natural rather than mechanical processes to produce its wines
